Australian Mint Stamp Variations David Mallen
Introduction The World Stamp Exhibition “Centenary of the Kangaroo Stamps” was held at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne from 10th – 15th May 2013. It was a Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) event. 24 items sold at the Expo or related to the Expo containing a mint stamp variation have been listed. The items sold prior to the Expo were released to raise funds and to promote the Expo. Some related items sold after the Expo have also been listed. Overprinted and cancelled products have been ignored unless they contain a stamp variation. Many items were only available at the Expo and some were sold prior to their First Day of Issue. This has been highlighted in the list. The main stamp issue of the Expo was the $10 ‘Centenary of the First Australian Commonwealth Postage Stamp’ (Kangaroo & Map) stamp. It was released with 13 image variations as well as some pre-decimal variations. Some variations had printed perforations. The most unusual Kangaroo & Map variation was the 1d black stamp released in the silver foil Premium Season Passes. A different minisheet was released on each day of the Expo. The 6 minisheets were produced with different printing techniques. They were available mint and could be cancelled with a normal black ink cancel or special foil cancels. Quite a number of “Collectable Stamps” (not valid for postage) were also released. The ‘King George V Issued and Unissued Stamps 1913 – 1914’ souvenir stamp sheet released on 1st December 2012 contained 4 pre-decimal stamps in the tabs. This was the first day of issue for the 2d black KGV and 1/- brown Swan stamps! A special thank you goes to Noela Dodd for supplying much of the detail listed and many images and for reviewing the draft versions. Gary Brown sent me the “Call to Melbourne for Australia 2013” promotional folder containing the huge lenticular stamp variation. Thanks also go to the collectors, dealers and Stamp News readers for their input and stamp images. David Mallen
