COLLECTABLE STAMPS OF AUSTRALIA : 1970 – 2016 Collectable Stamps are mint postage stamps that have been deemed not valid for postage by the issuing postal authority. The majority are imperforate stamps. Examples include:
A fully-imperforate or semi-imperforate stamp cut out from its surround. The stamp may be in a block, strip or pair or attached to a fully perforated stamp. A stamp with printed perforations (no holes) cut out from its surround. A stamp with an integrated tab removed leaving at least one side imperforate. A stamp contained in a product that is declared a “collectable” product. A stamp with a superseded country, colony or state name. A stamp with a superseded currency value.
Whole minisheets, prestige booklet pages and sheetlets containing collectable stamps are valid for postage provided they remain intact and have not been declared a collectable product. This also applies to products and variations that contain both collectable stamps and non-collectable stamps, however only the decimal stamps count towards payment of the postage fee. Most collectable stamps have gum on the back. Some silver and gold foil stamps are deemed collectable stamps despite them being sold uncancelled affixed to envelopes. Some collectable stamps released after the original issue date have been microdated with the year code corresponding to the year of re-release. Australia Post’s ‘General Post Guide’ September 2007, Section G2.2.6 update deemed over 60 previously issued or released decimal postage stamps as collectable stamps. They were previously valid for postage. See Section 1. David Mallen Australian Stamp Variations Melbourne, Australia www.asv.net.au issuu.com/asvcat V11 : February 2017
G2.2.6 – Cut-out stamps Embossed or impressed postage stamp designs on postage-prepaid envelopes or postal stationery, such as aerogrammes, are valid postage only on the original envelope or stationery. Semi-imperforate and imperforate stamps are only valid for postage if left as originally presented for sale, such as in a minisheet or similar format. These postage stamp designs and imperforated or semi-imperforated stamps are not valid for postage if they are cut from the original envelope, stationery or surround and affixed to any other postal article. [This information now appears on Australia Post’s website on the ‘For Collectors – Stamp Questions Answered’ page. It also applies to non-collectors.]
The details of all collectable stamps, if they differ from the original issues, are found in my Australian Stamp Variations catalogues. Available from www.blurb.com/bookstore. Definitions: “Fully imperforate” = No perforations on any side. “Impressions” = A range of special and limited edition products released at the end of every year since 2005. “Integrated tab” = An extra piece joined to the stamp without any perforation or roulette cut. “Issued” = Applies to a stamp that is available for sale on its First Day of Issue. “Personalised stamp” = A stamp with a customer’s image or photo on the tab or within the stamp image. “Printed perforations” = Stamp edges have images of perforations but no holes. “Released” = Applies to a stamp that is available for sale before or after the First Day of Issue. “Reprint” = A copy of a stamp that is released after its First Day of Issue. “Semi-imperforate” = Some sides or parts of sides perforated.
