CoN cops championship in Cheerdance tilt by Ma.Elaine Dy
“We did our best and so I think we deserve the title,” Said Nursing Representative Fasl Buenaflo, “We hope to do better next year,” she added, after Nursing Divison won the most coveted championship title in this year’s cheer dancing competition. Landing second place last year, the Nursing School Division finally bested 7 other divisions this year: BSAMA, Computer Science, Business and Management, Engineering and Architecture, Humanities, Social Science and Education and Natural Science Division. The victorious moment was greeted with loud cheers, drums and stomps as the ecstatic nursing students yelled, “B.S Nursing,” their white flag waving in the air. The annual cheer dance competition is one of the most awaited events of the University Fiesta. It has gained tremendous following among students. Unlike last year’s competition students didn’t bother queuing at the court entrance as early as two in the afternoon. Tickets costing twenty pesos saved them from the hassle of lining up, and the afternoon glare of the sun.
Students, parents, faculty and administrators started to fill the court at six in the evening. Soon the covered court was filled to capacity. A large projection screen was placed outside the court for those who weren’t able to get tickets to witness the grand event. A short drizzle occured but it did not dampen the excitement of everyone. The Dancesport competition kicked off the night’s event as the participants grooved to the beat of cha-cha-cha and jive. Six pairs from different divisions competed for the crown as champion. The dancers sizzled on the dance floor. The audience responding with hoots whistles, and shouts went wild. In the end it was the sharp steps and striking confidence of Mr. Leonard Belanio and Miss Ana Carmela Atilano that brought home the bacon for the Business and Management Division. Mr. Napoleon Bacus and Miss Michelle Reyes of the College of Nursing took the second spot while Mr. Francis Kristina Origs and Miss Julia Rusle of the Accountancy division placed third. The next competition was the Cheerdance competition with the nursing division taking the lead on
the dance floor. The performances were peppered with two standard Ateneo cheers, “Fight! Fight! Blue and White”, “Roll out the victory”. Drums resounded, loud cheers and neck-breaking screams filled in the air as the students cheered for their respective teams. Accountancy Division moved a notch from last year’s 3rd to 1st place this year. (Last year the Humanities Division won the Championship taking it from the Accountancy Division. The Humanities Division broke the four year record of the Accountancy Division.) The Humanities Division slid from champion last year to 2nd place while the Engineering and Architecture Division managed to place in 3rd followed by the Natural Science Division placing in on fourth. The Nursing Division topped the Cheerdance Competition beating all other divisions with their synchronized and well coordinated movements. Clock work precision of their hands and body movements caught the eye of the of judges. The student nurses claimed the title as champion. The danced number of the Rhythmic Illusion surprised the spectators. Their upbeat dance performance was an equal match for their enthusiastic audience. The production number of Ateneo talents, Ateneo Dance Troupe, A Guys and Ateneo dance-sport varsity with Mr. Enrique Enriquez taking center stage ended the night’s affair.

SAYAWTENISTA raised Atenean talent to greater heights as students from the different divisions of the university displayed exemplary dance floor skills leaving the audience with jaws dropped and awed with routines set to Original Pinoy Music. This annual event pays tribute to great Filipino musicality and domestic ingenuity by putting OPM and the Ateneans’ creativity to make a one massive celebration of music and school spirit. Indeed, this event calls for a pumped- up team spirit as division performers battle it out at the covered court turned steaming dance floor. This annual talent showcase is a great cause for students to unite and cheer their respective division representatives. The Natural Science and Mathematics Division emerged Sayawtenista champions, twice in a row. The entire dance was enjoyed by many spectators not only because of the team’s costumes and well- thought choreography but also to the beat of their music that complemented their whole new presentation of the marginalized Muro – ami’s. THE 59th Ateneo College Fiesta in commemoration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary opened with a parade on August 15. The parade started from the Centennial monument at Rizal Park along C.M Recto and Jacinto Streets, and ended in the covered court of the university where a Holy Mass would be celebrated. Each division chose a motif to identify the members. Nursing adopted the theme of the movie 300 “FIGHT FOR GLORY”. Natural Science and Math had placards advocating Save the Earth. Computer Studies identified themselves as the Heroes of the Future
IT Industry; the Humanities became combatants, Business Administration promoted the motif of World Festival. Engineering and Architecture proclaimed their slogan “We have tried only few survived”. The Social Sciences and Education displayed the home of the owl, while the Philosophy came as Blue Pirates. The Accountancy won the three special awards; liveliest, most creative, and most colorful division, with their Festival concept symbolizing life, color, and energy. Philosophy Division won the award for the highest number of participants.

10th Ignatian Cup and Extemporaneous Dialogue Competition Held during the Fiesta by Carmel Jade T. Bual
SEVERAL blue knights battled against each other during the finals of the 10th Ignatian Cup and Extemporaneous Dialogue Competition held at F213 on August 16, 2007 during the Ateneo Fiesta. Of course, the weapons were not swords or guns but only pure wit and sheer intellect. With the theme “Dissecting student apathy causes”, the event, which was organized by the Ateneo Debate Community, focused on the promotion of student awareness and active participation inside the campus. Several light, witty, and humorously eccentric motions were discussed such as “Parasitology classes should be held in the food court”, “Wearing of Havaianas in campus should be approved”, “Dating is better than debating”, “The skinny jeans craze is absurd”, “The Kalasag should incorporate Friendster profiles in the yearbook”, and “There should be a Fourth Year Christian Formation.” These propositions and the extemporaneous speakers really turned the mood of the afternoon’s events lighter. Too bad not enough students were there to see it. Several students did watch the debate portion (and left immediately after) but they were just required by their English teacher. So much for “dissecting student apathy causes.” During the awards ceremony, the College of Nursing was in the spotlight as their Team B (Krislyn Kate Dublin and Norman Lobino) won the first runner up award and their Team A (Jasmine Villanueva and Lucky Ace dela Cruz) became the champion in the debate. Nursing student Jasmine Villanueva was also crowned Grand Finals Best Debater while Pride of the Freshmen Bruneson Alabastro was named Tournament Best Speaker. Ignatian, Page 09

If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. Anne Bradstreet (1612 - 1672) British-born U.S. poet. Meditations Divine and Moral It has often been said that through adversity, through fording the tides of misfortune, we come out stronger, in spirit and will. This semester has become a crucial period in the long history of the Ateneo de Davao University. Once again, the Ateneo community and those who call themselves part of it are struck with circumstances that are considered as unfavorable and even described as fitting to the description, “a series of unfortunate events.” We have seen,
A Flawed
System
In the successful 59th school fiesta, two of the major fiesta events held in the covered court had a ticket system. The money generated by the tickets would be used as funds for the Daily Bread, a program intended to assist the scholars in their food allowance. According to the OSA, the ticket system was implemented to control the student population expected in the Cheerdance and Sayawtenista. It was claimed that the tickets were equally distributed to the nine divisions and it would be obtained thru first-come firstserved basis. They added that only one ticket from either the Cheerdance or Sayawtenista would be given to each student, as to give an opportunity for others to watch either of the events. However, several problems arose to the ticket system. Most of the students and alumni who wished to watch these events only got to view it outside the covered court. The first-come first-served basis was also unfair
for other students who did not know where and when the tickets got distributed. Larger divisions only got a meager portion of the tickets in proportion to their size. There was also a notable lack of information campaign telling the students that there were available tickets. Most of the students only got wind of the information on the day of the first actual sale of the tickets. We believe that the ticket system is flawed. Since the Cheerdance and Sayawtenista are events for and by the Ateneans, why is the ticket system becoming a restriction for students to enjoy these events? True, the ticket system is used to control the number of people inside the covered cour,t but when did it became a competition of the fastest ticket buyer? Shouldn’t these coveted tickets be distributed in such a way as to allow everyone to have an equal chance of obtaining them? In the first place, why can’t
we just hold the event in a place that is larger than the covered court? A good choice would be the Sports Complex located in the Ateneo High School campus. Good preparation for the Fiesta event could certainly make this possible. Another solution is putting the tickets in a raffle system. This would solve the procurement and distribution issues since everyone has a fair chance of getting a ticket (although by chance, but no system is perfect.) The money generated by the raffle coupons would increase the benefit to the Daily Bread program. All in all, the current ticket system solved some of our chronic fiesta problems, but at the expense of some of our fellow Ateneans. We do hope that come next year, an improved system will be implemented for the benefit of everyone or better yet, a larger and better venue for the Cheerdance and Sayawtenista.
Silver linings are easy to spot heard, and talked about these events from the moment they were so fresh, to the time it became a fad to joke about them, and even to the time it became boring. These events form part of the memories we have in the Ateneo. As trials come and go, the standards created by the society remain still and fixed. That the flaws will always be more glaring, the mistakes will always have a stronger stench, the shortcoming heard more often. A community that judges and punishes more often than it understands and forgives is a common institution. Though still the maxim would go that to have a grievance gives us purpose. But we tend to overemphasize this purpose. It is human nature to always have a leaning. Social Psychology would assert that man is prejudicial,
an entity of partiality. Let it be so, but it never did mean that human persons, as dynamic as they are, cannot bend that prejudice if the realities have proven to be unhelpful and ominous, in spirit and will. Le Rochefoucauld, the British moralist, would say, “If there is sufficient will, there will always be sufficient means,” What the Atenean needs to develop is the eye, the ear, and the nose that seek and yearn what is good, beautiful, and what makes life worth living. Let us learn to see the goodness of others, learn to hear the beautiful stories, and learn that life is still wonderful amidst all that is troubling us. This is action to set right the imbalance that has long shrouded the inherent ability of human persons to seek the things that make life a bowl of cherries. For if we always fill our
minds with that which make us face the world in a bitter manner, we only lose. We lose the world, our friends, the ones we love, and ourselves. This period reminds us that an Atenean is not just colors of blue and white walking aimlessly in the corridors, not just books and Nescafe iced coffee, not just iPods and qwek qwek. The Atenean is a person committed to change the world, the country, the little community, yet only realizes that he only needed to change himself. If we can do that we can achieve something grander than going into space. We’ve explored so much outside of the Earth, but we’ve forgotten to explore ourselves. Atenean let us learn to develop that eye, ear, and nose. Love your friends, your teachers and mentors, family, your school publication and love the Ateneo De Davao University.

The boob tube is plagued with shampoo commercials. Consider the commercial for Pantene (or was it Palmolive? Head and Shoulders? They all look the same to me) as it presents a woman with long and unbelievably shiny hair. No doubt her crowning glory enhance her pretty features, however since it’s a shampoo commercial, its star is the hair itself. It discarded the many good features of the model. “… ang ganda naman ng buhok mo miss, sana naging buhok ka na lang…” I often find myself saying, while I sigh to the fabricated (maybe computer manipulated?) endorsement of the perfect hair. I mean, does a woman’s beauty actually equal to the texture and suppleness of her long silky strands, which sway in unison as if alive? Maybe, you’d say “… pero maganda naman talaga pag mahaba at straight ang buhok eh…” but then stop and think for a moment: What about the women with short hair?! The concept of commercialized beauty is not restricted to women alone. In another particular commercial, the Axe cologne promises men that once they spray the “female magnet” women would turn to their animalistic instincts and ravage the man 24/7. Men are men when they smell heavenly, never mind
Rocks from Heaven Hyangelo Hao The annual Ateneo Fiesta is supposed to be a time to unwind from our daily academic grind. There were parties, games, and shows. It is really a time to strengthen our Atenean solidarity, a time of friendship and camaraderie. Why then did the exhibition game between the Ateneo de Davao University and the Xavier University almost result in a brawl at the last Fiesta? It’s called a friendship game, for God’s sake. But the message of the commercial (although the intentions, are after all selling the cologne) assumes that women (and some feminists could be angry at this moment) are easily swayed by tricks. No wonder some women aren’t getting respect. Why do these T.V. commercial imparts are so bent and driven on promoting these misguided concepts of what is good to look at and not? Isn’t it unfair for other people who can’t afford these products, and worse, they are beautiful and yet they don’t seem to feel like it? Not everyone is accustomed to admiring (and in some cases; worshiping) the “ideal” beauty spread by the media and cosmetic companies. person – such as talent, personality and intellectual depth, and in the end the character is compromised with the superficial and shallowness propagated by the media. Never forget that we are people, capable of making sound choices, and it is not necessary that we follow everything that we’re being told. If we continue to believe what the boob-tube is saying, then we are victims to our own hypnosis. We are told that white is a beautiful color; and others aside from that is considered an eyesore. We are told that the perfect cologne would turn a boy into a man, never mind if he’s kind or smart. We are told that skin tone and shining hair are the key to the modern goddess and if the woman lacks those qualities, her over-all charisma at charm drops down. It is high time that we stopped believing on everything we see, and start thinking for ourselves. After all, nobody can dictate on how we handle our lives. No one can tell us how to be beautiful. If we stop trying to be someone else, and instead try to be ourselves, then and only then can real beauty begin.

Frustrated perhaps by the countless defensive stops they encountered, including around eight blocks from a single AdDU player, Xavier decided to go

ABeautifulconspiracy The role of media in commercializing beauty is vast, and unfortunately millions of viewers are hypnotized with frequent exposures to these ads. While I am not worried to some secure individuals; I fear for the children who are watching these commercials. Of course, being children, they will try to imitate what they see, and with the frequent exposure to the dangers of these commercials, they could be misguided. Of course, parents are there to supervise, but with the current condition of our society, most of these parents are busy working to give due attention to their kids. No wonder many adolescents and even adults have several insecurities. They could’ve been conditioned into something that would make them view themselves as ugly people. While some of the people around have the same physical features like to the commercial models, others are considered un-gifted and labeled as undesirable and ugly. These people have to either walk with marks of stigma, or try, in vain, to be like everybody else; trying to imitate the “pretty” people on T.V. 06 The painting contest was held at the newly-renovated mini-auditorium on August 17, 2007. This event aimed to develop the artistic capability of the students and teachers, and to encourage them to become ingenious and artistically inclined. The contest was facilitated by the Philosophy Division headed by its representative, Jake Tadla. The event was also conducted to provide a venue for arts appreciation. Contestants from the different divisions of the school used oil/chalk pastels, water color, or poster paint on illustration boards to interpret the Ateneo Fiesta Theme: Mother Mary, Perfect Inspiration of Every Christian in Following Jesus. The participants brought a unique set of ideas and style, incorporating their appreciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the paintings they drew. Some of these artworks

displayed Mary as a loving mother towards her son, Jesus Christ. Some showed what Mary was for them personally, an inspiration whose arms are always wide open in times of trouble and need. One piece showed Mary embracing a poor boy, expressing her unfathomable love for this boy and everyone else, some showed Mary as a compassionate woman, one with whom you can share your most intimate feelings. The artworks were a colorful collage of experiences to show how the contestants were grateful for the blessing that was Mother Mary. Every inch of the boards was filled with the mixture of different colors with Mary as the primary figure. These things ultimately made the artworks shine and glitter in elegance.
The winners were announced on the evening of August 18, 2007, the last night of the Fiesta Celebration. The third prize went to Nemia Asiong, a Natural Science and Mathematics student. Her work encompassed Mary as an inspiration to everyone in all walks of life, may you be a student, worker, or anything else. The second prize went to Reggie Anne Torino, an Accountancy student. Her work was a unique one as
it exhibited a different style of painting through an artistic manipulation of the paint and other mediums making her work look enticing to the viewers who haven’t seen that kind of style. The first prize went to Richard Christian de Lira of the Humanities Division. His work was truly a beauty as it pictured Mary in all her elegance and simplicity. He expressed this by expertly using water color and pastel to make a stained-glass type of piece. These artworks were judged by Carlotta de Pio, Imelda Ribble of the PE Department, and Ryan Fuentes of the Campus Ministry. The winners received plaques and for consolation prizes, all received certificates. In the end though, every contestant was a winner, as all the entries both winning and non-winning have become the property of the Fiesta Committee and are now being displayed on campus for everyone to see.

and aesthetic expression, the College of Nursing got the first place. The Engineering and Architecture Division and the Computer Studies Division followed in the second and third places respectively. In the end, the Installation Art was a success. It really served its purpose as a venue for teachers, nonteaching staff, and students alike to express their imaginative ideas in the form of visual art. Some of those creative techniques are: piling stones to form an altar, crumpling pieces of old newspapers to create an imagery of a world, turning bottle caps into rosary beads, making use of piles of boxes to form a grotto and reusing old bicycle tire for additional meaningful decoration. The contest promoted camaraderie and teamwork among each division. Most especially, it served as one of the best ingredients in the main cuisine of the Fiesta, the celebration of the Feast of the Assumption. Indeed, it was a great way of paying reverence to our Mother Mary.
INSTALLATION Art
The third day of the Ateneo Fiesta heralded way for the ultimate expression of artistic talents – the Installation Art. Held at the Dott’s Park near the Gazebo, it was actively participated in all divisions except for the Philosophy Division. Each division fielded four students from each year level, the Division Chairperson, the Division Secretary, and three faculty members to participate in the contest. Working hand-in-hand, they were to transpose recycled materials into eye-catching works of art in relation to the theme: MOTHER MARY: PERFECT INSPIRATION IN FOLLOWING JESUS. Staying under the raging heat of the sun for five hours (from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM), the division representatives really did their very best to justify their own interpretations of the theme. The judges were Mr. Silverio Anglacer and Mr. Arione Panganiban. Based on the relevance of the art to the theme, resourcefulness, originality,
ARTS A HABIT THAT IS ART by Kheycee Mae Matarlo
Last August 15 around 2:00 pm, I was roaming with my friends around the campus looking into booths, eager to have excitement and fun. I never expected to discover something new. A group of people was gathered around something or someone. Out of curiosity, my friends and I see what the fuss was all about. Then, there he was, a chubby-looking student, playing with fire in his painting. That was the first time I ever saw an artist using fire in his artwork. I was really awestruck! After he had finished his painting, I decided to interview him. I was thinking it would be great to feature his way of painting. The artist is Jherand Cayanong, a fourth-year Management student. His friend and classmate, John Ragasajo, assisted him in this exhibition. Jherand told me that he learned “spray can painting” from a foreign friend. He tried painting using spray can or pilox. He had been practicing it for a month and in fact, this was his first public exposure. His exhibition was under the Engineering booth. (I think his fidelity to his former course is still within him). Jherand added that he sees this only as a “hobby” and so far, has no future plans regarding this. The fire thing really intrigued. He said the fire was used in the painting for it to dry quickly. Based on my observation, it somehow added
‘magic’ to the painting. It seemed like it had a glowing effect on it. It enhanced the beauty of the artwork. Thus, it became more appealing. Jherand used poster board paper, spray cans, cloth, plates and coins. He said that the budget was dependent on the pace of his painting. He couldn’t really tell how many artworks he could do in one day though. However, as long as he’s not tired, he could paint as many pictures as he can. I’d also observed that he liked painting planets and underthe-sea images. I asked him if these were his favorite themes. He said they weren’t. It’s just that there were not enough materials to paint other things. But if he had, he would want to try to. What’s more is that he paints in just five minutes. He forms abstract images on the poster board paper using spray cans. He mixes one color with another for variety. Right after, he uses the cloth, the plates, or the coins to enhance the shapes, line, forms, and texture of the painting. The most exciting part comes next, blowing fire on the painting. And poof! A new glistening and fantastically wonderful painting is now ready to be displayed. Jherand’s artistic hobby is one-of-akind and his talent is truly high-class. He’s one of the most unique and talented people I’d ever come across with. It was a great privilege meeting him.

MOVIE REVIEWS
by Karlo James Bringas
THERE might have been better ways of spending a lazy Thursday afternoon, but I doubt it. Ask anybody who attended the foreign film festival of the Ateneo Film Circle last August 17 in F-213, and they probably would recommend watching three-and-a-half hours’ worth of movies with non-English speaking actors wrestling with their problems as a good way of warding off boredom. The event started at half-past one, while the AFC members present waited for more people to come in. A prayer, a few remarks from AFC founder and president JB Busque IV, and the film showing started. First off was “Maria Full of Grace”, a joint 2004 ColombianAmerican production directed by Joshua Marston and starring Catalina Sandino Moreno in the title role. “Maria” tells the story of pregnant seventeen-year old Colombian breadwinner Maria Alvarez in the course of her deadly, high-paying work as a “mule” – a new breed of drug smuggler who swallows drug-filled pellets before boarding planes to the USA and other such countries. On her flight to New York she is accompanied by three other mules: Blanca, her friend from the sweatshop-like flower plantation she had worked in before becoming a mule; Lucy, a two-time mule she met in Bogota, where she was hired; and another woman. The third woman was apprehended by
customs officials in the airport, while the others that escaped imprisonment were taken by local drug dealers to a hotel room, where they are to stay until they excrete all their pellets. Things turn nasty when Maria finds the dealers the next morning taking Lucy’s body out of the room from a bloody bathtub. She and Blanca escape, taking along with them the pills they had excreted the night before. They head for Queens, NY, to an address Lucy gave as her sister’s while they were all aboard the plane. They boarded with Lucy’s sister Carla, keeping the reason of their visit and Lucy’s whereabouts secret, and while there Maria secretly embarks on a search to find Lucy’s body. Carla learns of the search and the object thereof, however, and so the two guests are thrown out of their host’s house. Now short of money and yearning to return to Colombia, Blanca and Maria meet up with the dealers, and after a tense confrontation collect the payment for their efforts. Lucy’s payment is withheld. Before they leave, however, Maria appears in Lucy’s funeral and gives Carla half of her money to send Lucy’s body home. They finally come to the airport, but just as Blanca walks in to her plane, Maria turns around and walks away, apparently deciding to stay behind. At this point the AFC introduced two guest speakers they invited for the event: Ms. Ma. Isabel
Actub and Ms. Gail Tan-Ilagan, whose comments expressed my thoughts at the time: indeed, poverty is one of the great evils that forces people like Maria to seek illegal, lifethreatening jobs in the hopes of lifting their station in society. As to the movie itself, what struck me the most about “Maria” is its clear-eyed, gritty feel, leading you to believe that you are actually seeing a real girl named Maria Alvarez as she makes her way to the USA and to a better life. The conversations between all the characters are casual and unaffected, and the emotions displayed by the actors are very convincing. All stereotypes are thrown out the window: gone are the devil incarnate drug suppliers, brutal dealers and unfeeling law machines, and in their place are warm, compassionate human beings who will not be looked at twice in the street. The movie does not try to glamorize the mule business, nor does it try to excuse Maria’s decision or condemn the people and events that led Maria and the other women to become mules: “Maria” simply aims to portray as realistically as possible the life of mule and the difficulties he or she faces in the fulfillment of this job. All in all, “Maria Full of Grace” is an intense, unemotional movie about a girl who rises up to the challenges brought about by her position in society with great inner strength, even if at the surface her fight is already lost. Another short introduction by the AFC, and the second movie, “The
Choir”, rolled. “The Choir” is a 2004 French film, directed by Christophe Barratier and featuring songs made by Academy Awardnominated composer Bruno Coulais. “The Choir” is the story of failed musician Clement Mathieu (played by Gerard Jugnot) who is employed as a supervisor in Le Fond d’Letang, a correctional institution for young boys with serious behavior problems, as told by two of his former wards 50 years from when Mathieu started in the institution. The institution/school is run by the harsh Mr. Rachin, whose methods in keeping order among his charges Mathieu proposes to scrap, by putting himself in charge of disciplining the kids. A bedtime check on the boys inspires Mathieu to create a choir, with the kids as the would-be interpreters of Movie Review, Page 09

the compositions he had brought with him. So the choir is formed despite Mr. Rachin’s skepticism as to its success. Pierre Morhange (played by real-life soloist Jean-Baptiste Maunier), the sweet-faced boy with a temper who is being punished at the time of the choirs formation, joins in later on, and with the addition of this talented soloist Mathieu’s choir is complete. The choir completely absorbs the kids, and as a result the incidence of mischief decreases, and the mood catches with the staff: Mr. Rachin is to be seen in one scene flying paper airplanes inside his office. All this is to be ruined, however: an unexpected performance for a benefactress of the institution turns Mr. Rachin against the choir, and the arrival of an unstable kid upsets the orderly balance Mathieu’s scheme has created among the students. A fire that burns part of the institution’s buildings heralds the climax, and Mathieu is fired from his post. Mathieu leaves the school buildings downhearted, but the singing voices of his wards and notes on paper airplanes give him heart. In the end, it is revealed that the boys testified against Rachin’s methods, resulting in his being fired too; that Pierre Morhange was sent to a musical school in Lyon, where he went on to become a famous conductor; and that Mathieu continued to inspire children throughout his life, with the help of a boy who went with him when he left the school. “The Choir” couldn’t have been more different from “Maria”. I was particularly moved by the lighting in the movie. “Fond d’Letang” literally translates as “Rock Bottom”, and this fact is seen clearly at Mathieu’s very

FIESTA ‘07 first day in school. The hallways and a lot of the interiors are dark then, and even the inside of a restroom where the boys hide from Mathieu one morning seems much too dim, even with the small window placed high on the wall. The movie becomes brighter as it progresses: the scenes are then set in bright classrooms and near large windows, and night scenes inside the boys’ common bedroom are well-lit. “Maria”, in contrast, is lit more or less the same from start to finish. Also, while “Maria” is a fresh, intense movie on the serious subject of international drug trafficking, “The Choir” is lighter fare with a plot more or less familiar with most moviegoers about troubled kids who, with the help of a charismatic adult, turn their life around through a shared passion (think Dead Poets Society and those sort of old movies). And I would also like to point out how odd it is that these kids, who can barely carry a tune at the beginning of the movie, could become such luminous musical prodigies in just a few months since Mathieu hatches his scheme. The movie has a lot of good points though. The children’s voices are certainly beautiful, and the kid who plays Pierre Morhange has a voice that gives me goose bumps. The actors who play Mathieu and Rachin do very nicely, and Mathieu’s conducting looks convincing to my musicallyuntrained eye. The lyrics of the songs the kids sing are wonderful. And the movie connected with all of us in there: everyone laughed gleefully at the boys’ obscene singsongs directed toward Rachin, and all as one made sympathetic noises as Mathieu learned that Morhange’s mother, to whom he expressed interest from the beginning, is dating an engineer. “The Choir” is a feel-good movie, through and through, and it certainly won all of us
in, whatever it lacks in plot originality and gravity. I left F-213 a few minutes past five, along with the few others who so wisely chose to watch these two movies. “The Chorus” and “Maria Full of Grace” were a delightful treat, and I vowed to myself that if ever the Ateneo Film Circle holds another film marathon, I would certainly pop in on their next event to watch.

It is very impressive that the contestants are taken from the freshmen and sophomores. They are not members of any of the school’s dance clubs and associations. The Humanities Division ranks third in the dance showdown. The Business and Management Division got the second place, while SSE’s Lea Onquinco and Ralph Alegre are hailed as this year’s best dance couple.

pride Napoleon Bacus and Michelle Reyes. The Accountancy division ended in third place. Meanwhile, an all- out splitting team from the College of Nursing ran away as Cheerdance champion in their surprisingly strong performance. They were followed by the Accountancy Div. (2nd); Humanities Div. (3rd); Engineering and Architecture Div. (4th); and NSM Div. (5th). The Accountancy Division was once again declared overall Fiesta Champion, followed by the Engineering and Architecture Division. The 3rd place went to the College of Nursing. A Guys, Ateneo Talents, and Dance Sport Varsity also graced the show. Not only was the Sayawtenista successful, but the entire Fiesta itself
09 was a huge success. The recently concluded College Fiesta all the more engraved another milestone for the university. Its theme, “Mother Mary, Perfect inspiration of Every Christian in following JESUS”, truly magnified Ateneans’ prowess in the field of academic excellence, social involvement, and spiritual growth. But then again, as fun and excitement literally subsided, let this celebration refuel every Atenean to continue striving for excellence and share magnanimity in our every victory. Animo Ateneo!

The First Semester: In Review by So.You
Sabi nga ng “Mabuhay Funerals” ukol sa inyong grades “If it’s your time… its your time!” Sosme! Studying here in Atenyu de Dabaw is never boring! So… without further ado ( at walang nakatakdang kaayusan) …
Item # 1:
Thank you po! Speaking of tuition fee increase, eh mukhang nagtaas na naman ng matrikula by 6.2% per unit ang Atenyu admin. Tsk , tsk. At Ikaw. At tayong lahat!
Item # 2.a:
Failure of Elections
Item # 3:
Finster Violence (oh no!) Isang detalyadong “rules and regulations” handbook galing sa OSA. Rhyming scheme! Sa get-up palang ng ating uni, eh hinding hindi talaga makakapasok ang mga elementong may maiitim na balak kay Tinyo and friends. Sigurado silang safe at makakahinga ng maluwag habang ka-holding hands ni Tinyo si Tinya (Or pwede ding si Tinyo1 at Tinyo2 or Tinya1 at Tinya2 para naman pang everyone ang appeal) sa luob. Waw. Love is in the air! Ano ba yan! Ano ba nangyayari kina Tinyo at Friends?
At public pa! Omigoodness!
Item#5:
Ang walang kamatayang Internet Fee
Sa pelikula ni George Romero na “Land of the Dead” hindi mo basta basta mapapatay ang mga naglalakad at mabahong zombies pag di mo talaga binaril sa ulo.
Pero, its better late than never diba?
“Overall, the fiesta celebration was great and amusing. It really came up to my expectations. Even though it was very tiring at the parade, the people had still saved an ounce of their energy for the rest of the day. I too saved an ample of my precious energy for all the night activities (which was very wild!) the fiesta has in store for us students. As a first year in this prestigious and elegant school, I am excitingly looking forward for the future fiesta activities next year that may enhance comraderie and friendship among students.” P3 1M2 BSA<clubz_z2z@yahoo.com> “Wa ko ganahi sa school fiesta oi. “fiesta was boring..” -odeA4 “The pay-per view ticketing system is FLAWED. The proposed equal numbers of students from their respective divisions was not achieved. There are a lot of illegal transactions such as purchasing of tickets from the unauthorized persons thus resulting to unequal distribution of tickets PER DIVISION. If the ticketing system’s goal is to allocate seats for the students on their respective divisions, it was not achieved. There were some students who are trapped between other divisions. The problem on long lines were not solved either. Yes, they’re not meta-long such as before, but still, some students stood in line for more than 30 minutes so as to assure a seat in their divisions. There is also no definite ticket prize. Some students bought their tickets for 15Php, 20Php, and even for 100Php! Plus, the College Fiesta only highlights the PERFORMING ART TALENTS of Ateneo. What happened to plurality? Where are all the artistic and intellectual discourses? They did exist but their existence were not emphasized unlike the MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS such as the CHEERDANCE and SAYAWTENISTA. Some students basically stayed at home during the fiesta because they find it boring. Seriously, not EVERYONE fancies watching boys and girls breaking their necks on the dance floor! The Ateneo Debate Community and the Ateneo Film Circle hosted more insightful events such as the Ignatian’s Debate and Film-Viewing on f213 but they were not heavily advertised so only a few people came to watch. Another thing is that, these events were held during the day along with the Palarong Atenista. Thus, the students’ attention was divided. Unlike the Shindig, Cheerdance, Ateneo Star Search, and Sayawtenista which were all held during the night with no other events to compete against it. And lastly, the awarding ceremony was cut short so as to allocate for the dances during the last night. Sayawtenista is supposed to be a part of the AWARDING CEREMONY. Not otherwise.” haylin01@yahoo.com
Concerned Ateneans Protest OSA’s Excessive Sanctions by Nisa S. Opalla
A group of concerned students held a series of candle lighting activities in front of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) Office in sympathy with the nine students who were victims of public humiliation and excessive sanctions by the OSA. The activities were held on August 29 and 31, and September 3, 2007. The first lighting of candles was held on August 29, 2007, with the lighted candles placed on the ground between the OSA Office and Student Organizations’ Offices. Placards saying ‘Wanted Justice!’ and ‘Shame us not!’ were displayed beside the lighted candles. A protester held a placard calling for other students to
join the silent protest condemning the “demeaning” acts perpetrated by the OSA Director Mr. Rikki Enriquez. The group that ran the campaign “Wanted Justice” claimed that Mr. Enriquez violated the rights of the students, and therefore should be sanctioned. A signature campaign was also launched asking Mr. Enriquez to resign. “We will not stop until justice is served to the student victims. I hope Mr. Enriquez will learn his lessons now. This is not just any ordinary case. This has something to do with right of many students debased by an administrator.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte answering questions in the “open forum” during his visit last Sept 19, 2007 regarding RA 9344.
RA 9344 is a stupid law- Duterte by Alfred Compra
“Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act or Republic Act 9344 is a stupid Law” This was the statement of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte during his speech in the Forum on Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006 on September 19, 2007 held at the Amphitheater of Ateneo de Davao University, this was sponsored by the Social Science and Education Division, Political Science and History Program and Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Agham Pampulitika ng Ateneo. Duterte asserted that the law authored by Sen. Francisco Pangilinan has many ambiguities. He then expressed disgust over the exclusion of arrest and detention of minors engaged in criminal acts. With the new law, children under 15 cannot be charged with a crime. A child above 15 but below 18 shall also be exempted from criminal liability. He/she shall only be subjected to an intervention program unless he/ she acted with discernment. Duterte said crimes committed
by youth offenders have increased in the city despite the approval of the law. He was irritated because he cannot place these minors behind bars who are involved on gangsters breaking out in the city resorting to drug- related crimes and using them as “runners” to peddle illegal drugs. Duterte also reacted on the matters of protection for victims of crimes perpetrated by minors. The law said, once a child is taken into custody and is determined to be 15 years old and below, the authorities who had initial contact with the child shall immediately release the child to the custody of his parents, guardian, or nearest relative and notify a local social welfare officer who shall determine the appropriate programs for the child in consultation with guardians. To Duterte, the procedure on child custody is somewhat dangerous. “Almost all of the delinquent juveniles come from a dysfunctional family.

AdDU Mini-Auditorium Restored by JB Busque
The University invested in yet another facility improvement. The newly-renovated MiniAuditorium of the Gisbert Hall is the newest addition to the A-grade facilities of the ADDU. The Mini-Auditorium serves as a multi-purpose room for P.E. classes, forums, plays, and the like. Engr. Paul Abrina, Head of the General Services Office, give details that the Mini-Auditorium needed more space, functionality, and be serviceable for all the purposes it serves. Added features of the MiniAuditorium are the tile floors, new
lighting instruments, railings, two floor levels for viewer and stage alignments, and the ramps to make the auditorium differently-abled friendly. The attached mono-block chairs were also removed as to give the auditorium more flexibility. The stage walls were replaced and repainted. A sink has also been installed in the backstage and there are new doors. More improved facilities of the ADDU only justify its mission for magis and the students and faculty that strive for it.

We should not tolerate such act,” said 4th Year Psychology Student Karlos Juan Manlupig, one of the organizers of the activity. Some concerned members of the faculty showed their support by displaying a placard written with the words “We are in solidarity with students’’. Another candle lighting activity was held on August 31 at the same place. The September 3 protest activity has gained more participants, with more students affixing their signatures to the letter calling for the resignation of Mr. Enriquez. “Candle lighting is symbolic. It brings serious issues in the limelight. I appreciate this action by the students. Real issues are beginning to heat up Ateneo now,” said former Faculty Club President Mr. Neil Ryan Pancho. the protest activities. He added “I don’t like to talk about it na; nagmove-on na kasi ako. Lessons learned. Learning the right way and the proper way in the proper time would always be the best thing for anybody to move on.” He explained that his intention in posting the posters was not to humiliate the nine students. He just wanted to call their attention. He added that using the word WANTED was an honest mistake. He just hoped that trust would still be there. He said that he is willing to adopt the changes to be made. The OSA and the disciplinary Board have plans to meet in order to discuss and review the policies and implementing rules related to student discipline. An initial memorandum of understanding has been signed to arrive at a peaceful settlement of the ongoing dispute among the faculty, students, and OSA Director Mr. Rikki Enriquez:
ADDU clinches two back to back debate tournaments by Marjorie G. Lamboso
It was a back to back win for the Ateneo de Davao University when it clinched two debate titles in a row. Spearheaded by the Ateneo Debate Community, the debate and public speaking club of the University, the team was able to secure two titles that once again confirmed the University’s excellence in the field of debate. The first ever Visayas – Mindanao Debate Championships were hosted by the University of the Philippines – Cebu last July 26-29,2007. Veteran debater John Andrew Macuto (BSME 2007) and David Jalotjot (AB Econ 3) AdDU-Team A were hailed champions of the said event. Under tournament rules, alumni were allowed to compete, which enabled Macuto to pair up with Jalotjot. Four AdDu teams and one adjudicator attended the event. Thirteen schools from the Visayas and Mindanao battled it out in 7 elimination rounds and 3 break rounds, with ADDU A facing off against teams from Ateneo De Zamboanga University, Mindanao State University – Marawi, and Silliman University in the final with the motion This house would support and all-out war against the MILF. Making it to the semifinals were AdDU Team B, Marjorie G. Lamboso (BSED-GNSCI 4) and Samuel John Salisipan (BS Math 3). Kristine Uy (BSA 3) and Kristine Joyce Castrodes (BSC-MA 4) of AdDU Team C were quarterfinalists. Macuto was named the Tournament Best Speaker, Jalotjot tied at 4th best speaker, and Lamboso and Salisipan tied at seventh, filling out four of the ten slots for the tournament’s Top Ten Speakers. AdDU’s lone adjudicator in the tournament, Joanne Rosario Tubao (ABMC – 3) was hailed as the 5th
Best Adjudicator of the Tournament, and was the only adjudicator from Mindanao to make it to the top five. Last August 31 – September 2, 2007, the senior team of Marjorie Lamboso and Samuel John Salisipan claimed the title of Mindanao champions in the 16th Mindanao Parliamentary Debate Championships held at the Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City. Also in the finals were Kristine Uy and Karla Stefan Singson (BSBA-Marketing 3) of AdDU – Team C, facing off against two Xavier University teams. Making it as far as the Quarterfinals were David Jalotjot and Kristine Castrodes of AdDU B, who were hailed as Tournament Best Speakers in the Top Ten Best Speakers of the tournament. Also in the quarterfinals were the tandem of Jasmine Villanueva (BSN 4) and Bruneson Alabastro (BSA-1). Breaking into the quarters but capped out were

MARTIAL LAW NOON HUMAN SECURITY ACT NGAYON by Sheena Duazo
Sa Human Security Act nakasaad ang labing-isang crimen na nasa ilalim ng parusa hinggil terorismo: piracy, rebellion or insurrection, coup d’etat, murder, kidnapping and serious illegal detention, arson, hijacking, highway robbery, illegal possession of firearms, violations of the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Waste HSA, page 22

COVERSTORY
Prosecutors drop case vs coed in stabbing THE City Prosecutor’s Office dismissed the frustrated homicide charges filed against a 17-yearold female student of a private university accused of stabbing her classmate. The prosecutor’s office tells police to instead initiate diversion proceedings instead of pushing through with the case. In a resolution penned by City Prosecutor Carlos B. Castaños Jr., said he found probable cause to charge the respondent, who was acting with discernment, for attempted homicide. But since the penalty imposed is not more than six years imprisonment and there is no proof that respondent has undergone diversion proceedings as required by Republic Act 9344 or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act, then there is no other recourse but to dismiss the case. Castaños, in dismissing the case, ordered the police officer to conduct the required diversion proceedings with the assistance of the City Social Services and Development Office of Davao
City.
Accused Gina (complete name withheld for being a minor) was charged for stabbing Ana (not her real name), a Mass Communication student, inside the school campus at around 8:30 a.m. of September 6. The accused was charged based on the testimonies of their classmates who saw the incident. Chief City Prosecutor Raul B. Bendigo explained that the ruling of Castaños was in accordance with law, saying that since the respondent was a minor, even if she was acting with discernment, Section 23-A of RA 9344 requires that she will undergo diversion proceedings with her and her victim’s parents at the CSSDO because the penalty for frustrated homicide does not exceed six years of imprisonment. “They will go to the CSSDO and mediate. Pag usapan doon ang mga babayaran, ang mga damages. Kasi kung nagexceed ng six years, we will file the case and ang court na ang magmediate,” Bendigo said.

Ateneo de Davao will represent the 9th FINEX Intercollegiate Finance Competition (ICFC) in Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Manila on October 15, 2007 together with the best Philippine business education institutions nationwide to vie for the title “Best Collegiate Finance Team in the Country”. The AdDU team, composed of Ian “Pinky” Corbilla ( BSA-4A),
Raymond Christian Ong Abrantes (BSA-4A), Joseph Rosello (Double Major Finance and MA), and Dawn Margaret Egualada (Finance 4th yr.) was included in the TOP 20 finalists and bested more than 60 schools all over the country during the regional finals held at Xavier University, Cagayan on September 21, 2007. prestigious academic competition in Management, Economics, Banking and Finance. It is an annual competition participated by various Colleges and Universities in the country hold by FINEX (Finance Executives Institute of the Philippines) in partnership this time with Citibank, Meralco, Vista Land, HP Calculators & the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. “We were stunned because we never expected that we will be included in the TOP 20!” Ian Corbilla said. It will be remembered that it was only in the year 2002 when Ateneo de Davao last entered into the Finals Round of the said competition. “After 4 long years na wala ta nakarga sa Finals, na redeem na jud ang crown” Corbilla added. Before the semi-final competition, the AdDU team has experienced pressures given the
limited hours of review and outside extra-responsibilities. “We really strive to balance our time, we do our daily academic routines but we give priority to study for the contest. Actually, we studied for a total of 36 hours as compared to other schools who prepared for almost a year.” Raymond Christian Ong Abrantes Among the other universities included in the top 20 rank are 2 UP schools, 3 Ateneo Schools and 4 La Salle Schools. The team is thankful to their coaches Mr. Ryan Morales, CPA, MBA and Mrs. Grace Baysa, MBA and their tutees Ms. JM Tingson, Ms. Ning Alcala, Mr. Pol Medina and Mrs. Pampanga who worked hand in hand to train the participants. Indeed, the victory is another milestone of the Ateneo de Davao to manifest its excellence nationwide.

classroom instruction should have field exposures so students will understand the contexts of the subject matter. That is why our Philippine Culture and Social System class went to the Visayas in August for an exposure trip. Headed by instructor Napoleon D. Amoyen, the trip was to make real the topics discussed in our class. We were going to witness the barter activities in Brgy. Malatapay, Negros Oriental and Role Expectations among the Sacadas in Tanjay, Negros Oriental. Our group left Davao City for Mactan, Cebu August 14 which was timed to take advantage of the Ateneo Fiesta Holidays and the Kadayawan Festival. The following day, we left Cebu to go to the actual site of our exposure trip. It took us more than five hours to reach Dumaguete City. Upon arriving in Dumaguete, we then went to Brgy. Malatapay, Negros Oriental, to see men engaging in bartering of water buffaloes (carabao), horses, cows and goats. When you get there, be ready to spend around P14,000 for an adult cow. Cash is not necessary when you plan to buy livestock though. Just take a well-

bred cow or pig with you and barter with them. If you’re not in the game to get live stock, there’s an affordable banquet of sea food served right on a site overlooking the Apo Island. Plus, there serve mouth-watering lechon baboy there, too. Almost everything in Dumaguete is affordable. The hotels, food, other goods are easy on the pocket. We settled there for three days during our visit to Malatapay and Tanjay – Dumaguete’s neighboring areas. Tanjay has sugar cane haciendas where sacadas or migrant workers cultivate the sugar cane until it is ready to harvest. According to my grandmother the sacadas were treated badly before. They were underpaid and viewed as slaves by the Ilonggos. We explored on hacienda and mingled with the workers. As what we have assessed, the workers are not seen as sacadas anymore. They are now regularly paid and well-treated sugar cane workers. Upon completing our itinerary, we had the privilege of touring the Silliman University in Dumaguete City. We got to tour each college inside – including the Sociology and Anthropology College. The Socio and
A POSE together with the Sociology majors before leaving the Silliman University
Anthro College has a vast museum of historical materials like skulls of tribes in Visayas and witchcraft kits from Siquijor. One of the interesting sights inside Silliman is the Marine Laboratory where sea creatures of varying sizes and color and relics of mammoth whales are well-kept. The trip did not end there. For our last days in the Visayas, we went back to Cebu City to put our feet up. Pasalubongs were always in our mind.
The malls and other great sights in Cebu were rewarding after our tough but profound trip in Negros Oriental. Each night we spent there was a celebration. Although we missed the Ateneo Fiesta and the Kadayawan, we were pleased to experience traveling around Negros and Cebu. We learned more from the exposure trip than from the texts and concepts shared inside the classroom. by Mick Basa
FTER the never-ending pre-trip planning, heated something beyond the whitewashed corners of the academe so we stuck to the debates and exhaustion of personal funds, we finally took off for itinerary. Monday, September 10, 2007, the official first day of the trip was highlighted Manila last September 9, 2007. It was a pretty uneventful flight; we were hoping to experience frightful air turbulence because it by an hour’s wait at the gates of the Malacanang Palace. Unfortunately for us, takes a lot to scare the political science students of ADDU. But it we were only allowed to visit the Malacanang Museum. But it was exhilarating was a fun flight nonetheless. URING the opening and closing ceremonies of the recent Ateneo Fiesta, the Blue Knight Song was played for the entire Ateneo community. However, I was saddened by the fact that not everyone knew our own Alma Mater hymn. As someone who graduated from the Ateneo de Davao Grade School and a certified “blue blood”, I could not help but feel disturbed. A friend of mine who is a transferee said that when the Blue Knight Song is aired, he could no do anything and wished that the school would provide a specific avenue to teach it. I wonder if it is even taught during the Ateneo First Year Orientation Program. I am now even envious of our younger co-Ateneans. My seven-yearold cousin who is in Grade 1 at the Matina campus can sing the Blue Knight song better
The good father F
by Karlo Aaron C. Respicio
OR ALMOST all of the 20 years of my life, I grew up with a father who most of the time, if not always, provided me, my siblings and my mom all that we wanted and needed. During that time, everywhere I’d go -- in school, in parties and even in family gatherings -- everyone told me how good a provider my father was. So I grew up thinking that all it meant to be a father was to be a good provider. It was only recently that I began to wonder if that was right. Can we not define a father beyond his finances, beyond the material things he can provide his family? It would seem that most of us see our fathers only as money-making machines that spit out cash when we need to buy or pay for something. This question came to me when our family started to have financial problems. My father wasn’t earning as much as he used to. Unpaid bills started to pile up. My mom was becoming anxious, wondering how we would pay the bills.
One afternoon as I was lying on the sofa reading a book, I received a call from the local cable company to remind us that our bills were three months overdue. The person on the other end told me that unless they received payment within so many days, they would disconnect the line. As our financial woes got worse, my parents began to have fights. Not because they hated each other, but because they were both worried sick about the whole “crisis.” It was tough for us. At times, we would catch ourselves staring at each other and reminiscing about the old days -- the days when we would party all night, the days when we would spend thousands of pesos on groceries, on clothes and the like, the days when we would go to fancy restaurants and feast on different kinds of food served before us. Indeed, those were the days. As the months rolled by, there was still no improvement in our financial condition. In school, I started sharing our problems with fellow
students who were in the same fix. They said it was our fathers’ fault because had they found other means of livelihood or had they worked harder, we would not be in the situation we were in. For a while I tended to agree with them. I was inclined to put all the blame on my father’s shoulders. I would say to myself my father had acted irresponsibly and brought our entire family into such a situation. However, by some bizarre work of fate, my perception changed. One time, I approached my father to ask for my allowance. The request seemed to have come to him as a shock, and he dropped the newspaper he was reading. His reaction struck me as surprising since it was always he who would give my siblings and me our allowances. From the reaction on his face, I knew he didn’t have the money. All he said was, “Ahh … there’s a hundred pesos on top of the TV set.” I went to my parents’ room and found on top of the TV set one P50 and two P20 bills. It was P10 less than what father thought he had. At first, I thought it was unbelievable. But from what I saw on my father’s face, I knew I had
to accept the fact that it was all he had. It was that incident that made me see my father’s worth. It brought me to the realization that my father is a human being, and not some money-making machine. Most importantly, it made me see that I have a father who’s always there to support his family, a father who works hard to send his children to school, a father who would do everything for his family, a father who loves all of us. The incident told me how much my father is willing to give to us, which is everything he has. The fact that he stayed with us during those trying times was enough. The fact that for all these years he cared and loved his family was more than enough. Being a father doesn’t mean earning millions. It’s more than that. Now I don’t need anyone to tell me how good a father he is, because I know it for a fact and I can say it myself: My father is a good father. Karlo Aaron C. Respicio, 20, is a Bachelor of Arts in English senior at the Ateneo de Davao University. Reprinted: Philippine Daily Inquirer, YOUNGBLOOD, September 4,2007

“Yung with all the sanctions, kung ako din yung student, syempre ma-humiliate pud ko and everything. Like duh, murag okay na. Murag tama na siguro tung kasuk-an ko, nga yawyawan ko and everything, na mali, na dili ko pasudlon sa Ateneo. Pero, kung kana, murag sobra na siya. Murag quits na, ayaw na. Murag wala man pud gud na siya sa handbook gud, sa duha ka handbook. Katung last year nga edition ug karon nga edition, murag wala juy nakabutang nga if you have that offense, i-post imong nawong, ipa-public apology, ipasulat kag letter. May pag musayaw nalang kog cheerdance nga daghan kog mali, mas okay pa na kaysa i-post akong nawong diha.” telkml03 “Nakit-an man jud nako tong poster, wala pa siya natanggal… Actually, with my co-representative, nag file jud mi ug sarili namong letter for Fr. Samson. Para sa akoa lain jud to para sa mga studyante. Actualy, I personally consulted the Director of Human Rights Commission for Region XII and according to her, it was really a violation of the Rep. Act 7610. Diba Makita man natto sa mass media na pag minors, usually gina-cover ang face, ginatagaan ug nicknames, mga dagko pa jud nga kaso, kana pa kaha nga gamay lang, nag tamper lang ug ID. And isa pud sa akong gina-stress nga point kayh diba naghatag ug letter of apology ang mga studyante, addressed kay Sir Rikki, Aug 15 pero ang poster nigawas siya Aug 17. Diba lain man kay nag-apologize na gud ang mga studyante and to think, there are so many sanctions, katong 50 hours na Community service, and wala pa jud sila gipa-apil sa Fiesta. Naa man jud sila’y sala, no doubt. Gi-amin nman nila na naa sila’y sala, pero sobraan na man gud siya. I am not against Sir Rikki but I am against the form of disciplinary action that he gave. Lain man gud ang impression pag Wanted, kay mura jud ka’g Abu Sayaff or unsa na mga heinous crime imong na-commit. Diba ang mga studyante naka-violate sa rule pero na violate man pud sa OSA ang rule kay dili man stated sa handbook na dapag mag-post ug WANTED nga poster… ug wala pay enough nga due process ug wala siya napaagi sa disciplinary board.” Jack Anino, 1st Year Rep “At first, normal lang. Hindi ko na-feel. But when “nanay” started talking about it, na-realize ko na tama bitaw no! “The punishment imposed by Sir Ricky upon the students is out of jurisdiction. Wala niya naisip na ma-hurt ang mga students. Then, ana pa jud akong friend na naa daw siya madunggan na uban students na muingon “ui! Siya man ‘tong student na wanted noh?” kung makit-an ‘tong isa sa mga students. Kung ikaw nasa ilang lugar, sakit siya ui! (Plan of action) Ambot! I’m confused. Nakatrabaho naman pud nako si Sir Ricky. Hawod man pud siya. He has some good aspects as our OSA director. So, I am not in favor of ousting him. Maybe let’s give him another punishment. Probably, a public apology would do. Since napahiya niya ang mga students, dapat siya rin mapahiya para patas. (About Samahan) SAMAHAN is so passive. Mura lang siyag decoration. Char2x! SAMAHAN should be the “spokespeople” of the students. Dapat naa siya sa side sa mga student. Pero parang tengang-kawali lang ang SAMAHAN. Dapat sila naga-initiate. I think they should support James Earl Chew. “ Wytmoon of CS3

Anong “say” mo? “Okay, andun na tayo sa point na nakasala ang student. Naa may process, diba? Naa may right process para i-punish yung student. Hindi naman [dapat] to the point na “Wanted!” na para namang nakapatay sila ng tao. Pwede naman na confidential na i-take yung case, diba? Hindi lang na ibandera na “O etong mga taong to, wanted to.” Ang kasalanan lang naman nila is yung hindi sila nag-follow ng rules pero meron naman tayong nakasulat sa handbook, diba? May mga punishment na yun dapat ang gawin if ever makasala ang student. Hindi naman to the extent na i-post talaga yung name. Very humiliating kaya. Tsaka, sa point din ng parents, syempre masasaktan din sila, diba? Tsaka, mga minor pa din sila so, meaning, kung nakasala sila.. [according] sa Republic Act 7610, meron namang right way, diba? Bakit pa kailangang gawin ang ganun? Dapat ma-discipline ang [student] or, kung musugot ang uban nga mag public apology siya, as in kanang apology jud nga apology, di na [dapat] niya buhaton next time. Tsaka, another pala is sana tigil-tigilan na niya ang pagsasalita ng mga bad words sa kanyang mga constituents.” Pinkgirl “Sir Rikki has [his] own handbooks with [his very] own rules and regulations that differs [sic] from the handbook we have been using. He obviously uses his power to do whatever he wanted [sic] to do, no matter what it takes. He is a reputation-maker that has negative effect [sic] to those who received the sanction he had [imposed].” Personally, ok ang letter para i-express ang side sa students….but NO FOR OUST RIKKI” Cherrie Manalo(SSE Representative) “Naa jud sala ang mga students…the problem is, there should be a proper sanction. Mali ang gibuhat na action ni Mr. Enriquez kay wala man sa handbook…public humiliation jud siya.Sa SAMAHAN pod there should be a proper meeting between Mr. Enriquez and the students i-agi jud siya ug due process para mahusay… peaceful dapat….ok ma oust si sir Rikki basta kabalo ko kung kinsa ang mo puli” “Bag Pack” (student)
FACULTY “The action is not good…humiliation talaga and there is no due process.” “Note lang dapat for the students and dili posters. Personal na kausapin ang students at hindi yung ipahiya in public. Mag complain dapat ang mga students.” Personally naa jud ko sa side sa students.” “Skinny girl”(SSE) “Wala siya kabalo sa consequences sa iyang gibuhat.” “Pero for me tama lang iyang gibuhat but then minors kasi.” “I was once a victim. Nasinggitan ko niya, gi- understand nalang nako siya first year of teaching ko pa kasi nun.” Sa students side parin ako siyempre.” “Meg”(SBG) “On placing the names of students and the form of penalty? Well, I don’t think that it’s good to give that kind of penalty. Kasi, when you talk of due process, you should first notify the person in writing, that this is the form of accusation against you, something like that… You don’t automatically penalize, there has to be a trial to some extent. So if that’s the case, well, plain and simple, you violate due process. Yun yung comment namin diyan. Napakabilis naman mag-penalize. And secondly, meron tayon gbagong batas ngayon, violation about yung sa mga minors, na tinatawag nating Rule of Confidentiality. Kung napapansin ninyo yung sa telebisyon, kung may mga minors, they try to blur their faces at kung maari, they hide the identity of the minors. Same thing here, you should observe confidentiality with that of minors, dapat hinay-hinya lang sa bagay na yan.” “We already forwarded last March to Father Samson a letter regarding the issues with Mr. Enriquez but then there is no progress.” “Now this is the right time (open environment) “There should be a search committee for screening sa mga candidates for the position as the OSA Director” “We should continue monitoring Rikki.” “There is an adverse reaction: 1. Violates due process-especially minors 2. Prone as penalty itself 3. Turned down the suggestions during faculty meetings Sa meetings: “Consensual pag naa ang faculty…Dili consensual pag wala ang faculty” Samahan: “I don’t expect so much from the SAMAHAN.” -vulnerable Sir Ryan Pancho(President Union Faculty)
“[Opinion on the “Wanted” poster] My opinion there is, ask the OSA office why they did it…. I can’t answer that for myself. For students, implementation of school policies is made by the OSA, and whatever violations they did, the OSA office has to notify a committee. A committee is to convene regarding the issue. I can’t speak as an office… when in fact the concern is between the OSA and the [students]. [Regarding the filing of complaint] I heard but I haven’t seen really…. I can’t attest to the veracity of the facts. This will be discussed [by the committee]…. The file didn’t pass through my office. [Asked if any actions are done by the FYCF office to help the students] I referred them to their facilitators…. They will report to me how the students are [at this point]”. Interview with the
SAMAHAN Secretary by Carmel Jade T. Bual
O
General
n the university’s controversial “Wanted” posters issue, one courageous SAMAHAN officer stood up to express his strong support for the protection of students’ rights. This brave Atenean is none other than Mr. James Earl Chew, present Secretary General of the Student Government and a third year AB Political Science student. In an exclusive interview, Mr. Chew expressed his deep concern and obvious exasperation due to the “Wanted” posters in school. As an elected official, he said that it is his duty to represent the voice of the student body and especially those of the oppressed among us. The entire content of the interview, which was held on August 25, 2007 during the peak of the controversy, went as follows: Atenews: How did you know about the Wanted posters? What was your initial reaction?
James: Yes, on August 22, 2007, as I was entering the premises of the university, nakita ko sa Jacinto gate ang isang poster ng “Wanted”. It surprised me na makita ang mga fellow Ateneans [ko] na nakapost [dun]. I asked the guard, “Kuya, can I have a photocopy of this?” That very morning, Wednesday, kinuha ko sa guard. I didn’t take pictures na nakapost talaga. He called my attention and asked me, being an officer, what the stand of SAMAHAN was. Actually, tinatanong lang niya kung ano ang stand ng SAMAHAN, in a way challenging us to take action. Atenews: What is your stand regarding this issue? James: Syempre, ako, I would like to vehemently express my gravest disappointment sa nangyari. Talagang to the highest and greatest extent ang aking disappointment at pagkadismaya sa nangyayari ngayon sa ating kapwa Atenista. It’s as if that they are not humans and have no dignity to preserve. It’s as if they are not students of the Ateneo. In fact, the school, especially the OSA director, should be the one na maging model in preserving and molding o paghulma sa character of the students here in Ateneo and not to destroy although, yes, the students have violated rules in the handbook. [However], this violation, the act of the students, should be corrected but not to the point that their dignity and their persons are destroyed. Sobra ang punishment na ipinataw ng OSA director, without even going through due process. Wala man lang gani niagi sa Disciplinary Board nga naa man unta na siya sa process. So, my official stand on this, as Secretary General, is that I am gravely disappointed. To the highest degree ang pagkadismaya ko and I would seek for the resignation of the one who arbitrarily imposed this punishment to the students. I am not calling anybody a criminal. I just believe that, in this university, we have rules and rules are supposed to be followed. I understand that Mr. Enriquez followed the rules when he called the attention of these students who violated the rules set in the handbook. But he should also follow the rules governing the punishment. These rules do not include public humiliation. Atenews: If ever you had the chance to talk to Mr. Enriquez, what would you tell him? James: Sir Rikki, save yourself. Resign. Atenews: How about your co-students here in the Ateneo? What is your message for them? James: Well, I just want them to be informed of what is happening and I want them to be informed that their fellow students, if not the majority [then] an overwhelming number of students in the Ateneo, have suffered verbal abuses coming from administrators. I would like to inform them that they have rights and that, being students and being humans, they have to fight for these rights. They have to stand for what is correct. They have to stand for a genuine Jesuit education. And that is justice. That is fairness. Cura personalis. They should always think of that. I would [also] like to call on them to be men and women for others and join us in this call. It’s time! Noon pa ‘to e. It’s the right time. Ngayon na! Let’s [hope] na mapigilin na ito. This should be the last of all the abuses. Tama na. Sobra na ang mga abuses na nangyayari. It’s time to go directly to the root of all these abuses. Kung sino man talaga ang gumagawa nito, doon natin punteryahin and let us call for his resignation.
James: We all have a stand naman. It’s just that siguro, naa pa sila sa [side of] fear karon to express and take a strong stand on this. I don’t know why but, hopefully, sana kaning co-officers nako sa sulod, ang kadaghanan sa ilaha, they should think and they should stand for what is right. Kung mali man ang gibuhat ni Mr. Enriquez, let us stand [against] it. Saan man kami mapunta, [we should] accept the consequences and be ready to face them because you won’t be afraid if you’re fighting for the truth. Some of the officers are taking the soft stand on this despite the fact that they themselves know and have even experienced these abuses. They are afraid and I don’t know why. There are speculations as to why they are not taking a strong stand on this. Pero, I can’t afford na mag-divide mi sa sulod. So, I’ll respect their stand. If they go into that then so be it. But, they can’t stop me and I can’t stop them. So, I’m just asking them na momata na. Let’s wake up and take a stand on this.
It’s time to go directly to the root of all these abuses. Kung sino man talaga ang gumagawa nito, doon natin punteryahin and let us call for his resignation. Atenews: We know that you have begun a signature campaign. What would you tell the other students to encourage them to participate? James: Well, I would inform them, in the first place, of the events, of all those historical.. Super thick na ang mga complaints, ang mga cases na hindi naaaksyonan against Mr. Enriquez, against his abuses, against his verbal [abuses] over the students. Even the student assistants inside his office are actually clamoring for justice. Para sa iba, marami pang mga pang-aabuso ang nangyayari at latest nga itong “Wanted” which is, for me, the gravest na. It’s too much. Umabot na sa ceiling. Umabot na sa maximum ang pang-aabuso. I want this to stop kasi kung hindi ito mapipigilan ngayon, our younger brothers, [as well as] my cousins who will be studying in this university next year or how many years from now, will suffer the same abuses that we are suffering right now. I just like to ask them [the students] to sign this call for resignation for our own sake right now. Ateneo students should be genuinely free and treated humanely, hopefully, by another OSA director. Fortunately, the issue regarding the “Wanted” posters was resolved in a peaceful manner and Mr. Chew was one of those who signed the resolution. The signature campaign that called for the OSA director’s ouster did not push through anymore but the signatures will still be submitted to the University President. Mr. Enriquez still remains as the university’s OSA director. Mr. Chew has also expressed his unwavering vigilance with matters pertaining to the rights of students.

Hopefully, everyone will make a wise judgment and continue being vigilant. HAY NAKU. MAKASULAT NA NGA
I
was disappointed. Many reacted against the “Wanted” posters. I had expected many would react in favor of it instead. I expected that many people would sigh and think that finally, the OSA is now dead-serious in dealing with matters of discipline by raising the bar against violators of the rules and regulations of our dear, beloved handbook. I expected the posters to usher in a new era, where Ateneans would be more diligent in following the rules and not breaking them. But I was disappointed. As I have heard and read, the main issue here was the kind of punishment given to these poor students. Theses students were made to undergo, shall we say, extreme psychological trauma and distress because of the punishment given to them. The punishment, in other words, was way to excessive, too degrading, and too inhumane in comparison to the violation committed (I will get to this later on). Digressing a little, the Atenews stated that, “Even if there is a need to be strict and stern, shouldn’t someone in Mr. Enriquez’s position be more tactful, polished and intelligent when it comes to sanctioning violators, especially when theses are first-time offenders and most are minors?” I find this statement rather funny, particularly the part where the Atenews describes the violators as first-time offenders and minors. With regard to vandalism, any student caught vandalizing is dismissed, whether he be a first-timer or not (The reasons for this is written in the handbook). What I like to point out here is that it does not even matter how many times one has violated a rule. Frequency does not change the nature of the perversity of the violation. Hence, why should one be more lenient towards the first-timer? It does not make
any sense. As for the fact that these are minors, we must presume that any person who steps into college must already have the necessary emotional backbone to weather anything that this school has to offer, including punishments such as this. If they cannot handle the emotional stress dealt by their punishment because they are minors (and must be shielded from the necessary evils of this world, like what
many of us say), they are free to consult the Guidance Center and undergo counseling to relieve themselves. Why can’t we just say that this was a learning, although rather harsh, experience for theses students and not a violation of their student rights? For me, their punishment could have been worse. The OSA could have made them stand in front of its office, holding a Wanted sign, in full view of the adoring public. With this, we go back to our discussion. I ask: was the punishment really that severe, that damaging to the students to warrant widespread condemnation? I remember a sermon by a priest and he lamented that people are very eager

ourselves first. Perhaps, instead of blindly accusing the administration over these “injustices”, it would be better to by Englisero first reflect on this issue. when it comes to promoting human rights The violation here is not just but are equally disinterested when it comes lending of IDs. The violation speaks of to human duties. Perhaps, we are forgetting our culture. I guess most of us know something in the picture here; something is of someone who has consciously and clearly lacking. Many are crying out for student willfully lent his or her ID. Many of us rights. But, what about student duties? cheat in exams and quizzes and violate First, let us take a look at the the dress code. Many have vandalized violators. They know that lending their IDs and have committed more grievous was wrong and so do the rest of us. But they offenses against this institution. The did, and unluckily, they were caught. Yet, why violation here is not just a violation but did they take that risk? Maybe, they saw that a symptom of our debased culture in need of rectitude. Come to think of it, I see these violators as our heroes. They are heroes in the sense that, in their own tragic circumstance, they have owned up to their violation and have made the necessary apologies. They have shown us their best example of what it means to be a student. They have done this while the rest of us, who are as guilty as them, parade around the school crying out for justice and their redemption, never daring to acknowledge our little “crimes”. Many of us ask: why is the punishment so severe? Why did the OSA director resort to such bestiality, such cruelty, in punishing these students? Could it be that the form of punishment these students received many other Ateneans were doing it. They saw reflects the culture we have now? Could that in the culture we so proudly call Atenean, it be that we, the present generation of lending IDs is a normal thing to do. Maybe Ateneans, have been so delinquent they’ve caught on to the mainstream campus that only this kind of punishment is culture whose slogan is: “It is only wrong deserving of us? Could it be that we when you’re caught doint it.” have been so retarded, in terms of And so they did it. They violated the discipline and ethics that only this kind rule. Deception was their goal and they failed. Their pictures were posted, reminding us that deception has no place in this school.

Furthermore, Sendiong also hopes for a reconsideration of the room-to room electoral method. It was only last July’s election when the OSA ordered to stop this proceeding because of the interruption that it may bring to the ongoing classes. Sendiong is encouraging the whole student population to help restore the democratic responsibility that is almost lost in the hearts of Atenean sbecause of the ever changing political scenery and the apathy in Ateneo student politics. “The COMELEC is committed in its share in the continuing task of increasing students’ elections, what we want is for you, students, to do your part!” she said. Sendiong exclaimed, “Student election serves as TRAINING, for us to be prepared in the real world. Do not let apathy consume us! with clubs and classes … [and through] a freedom board”, and “to advance students’ interests in the University committee meetings … [like] the Multi-sectoral Council, [the] Higher Education Council, and the Student Affairs Committee”. Peňano, on the other hand, aims for an effective student-teacher dialogue, where the student organizations and the faculty may talk about issues pertaining to the students and their subjects; the inclusion of first year students in the university clubs; a strategic institutional repositioning concerned with constant communication between the student assembly and the student-teacher dialogue; and a policy of transparency by the SAMAHAN, the faculty and the administration. The candidates have high expectations on the special elections set for October 1 to 5. In the words of Eman, “I expect that more students will vote, since first years are allowed to vote this time … [and that] more students will take part in the next month’s elections because [both] candidates are independent. Students will get to see new faces this time.”

How can you confidently entrust these “neglected” children back to their irresponsible parents?” the Mayor said. Duterte also questions the lack of mandatory provision for budgetary allocation to build institutions for juvenile reform. The Mayor is asking Pangilinan to revisit the law and make necessary amendments to it. According to Duterte, a criminal law must hinge on two things; the deterrence of the people to commit a crime because of the fear of its consequence and the Lex Taliones or retribution. Unfortunately, the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006 failed in these criteria. “The law just promotes anarchy and loses the sense of accountability”, he said. In Ateneo de Davao University, it was noted that the case regarding the stabbing incident involving minors was dismissed because there was no proof that respondent has undergone diversion proceedings as required in Republic Act 9344 or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act.

Practice what you preach, ‘ika nga ‘di ba? Matuto, maging organisado at kumilos! crime of perjury but his father, the former president Joseph Estrada, was convicted of the crime of plunder. Wednesday, the last official day of the trip, the class was shocked and bewildered to be greeted by a marching band like we were foreign dignitaries at the Manila City Hall. It was arranged by the Manila Tourism Department. The tour guide informed us that Mayor Alfredo Lim would have been happy to tour us around the City Hall but he was busy somewhere else. Instead the history of Manila was read to us after which we were toured around the campus of the first locally sponsored university, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila in Intramuros. The last stop was an interview with Nilo dela Cruz one of the initiators of a rejectionist group
that split from the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). The class got firsthand information on the kind of politics the leftists practice which in its opinion deserves recognition from the civil society. If we are to be asked how was the tour, we would say ‘very liberating’ but at the same time very exhausting. The students of the said class returned from Manila on September 13, 2007 A five day trip that started at one of the biggest malls in Asia and ended in the bootleg capital of South East Asia plus middles of nonchalant representatives, celebrity senators, amusingly weird tour guides, a welcoming band and long hours on the evils of traffic, it lasted more than what time allowed it to last.

Control Act of 1990 at Atomic Energy Regulatory and Liability Act of 1968.
