Consummatum est. It is finished. These were the last words of Jesus Christ on the cross in Calvary, after his scourging and pains. Jose Rizal also muttered these words before his execution in Bagumbayan, ending his fight with the oppressive Spanish rule. Part of human life is to accept that everything in this world must end, no matter the effort we exert to prevent it. This is not an easy idea to be comfortable with. Many of us will still weep at the loss of something or someone we value. But as what we could hear from Christ and Rizal, even suffering must end. Loss, death and decay are therefore not our enemies; they instead remind us that
what we have at present may soon come to pass. As a response, we either cherish the present, or lash out in anger that the present could not end sooner. This year’s Diwanag seeks to show that everything, no matter how good or terrible, must end. “Finite” showcases artworks from Ateneans that either highlight the value of an object, or the hope that one day, everything will change for the better. Atenews hopes that you not only enjoy the aesthetics of the artwork but also ponder upon how each artist interprets the theme in his/her own life.

“Happiness is not constant. Sometimes when you think you’ve found it, you’ll lose it again. But that doesn’t mean that you should stop pursuing it. Happiness should be something you should always be looking for. By always pursuing it, you find true happiness.”

A Picture of Finite Darkness
“But he hasn’t got anything on!”, the whole town cried out at last. The emperor shivered, for he suspected they were right. But he thought, “This procession has to go on”, so he walked more proudly than ever, as his noblemen held high the train that wasn’t there at all.” (H.C. Andersen, The Emperor’s New Clothes)

ike all other books with finite pages, Diwanag also have to end. But let it not be the end of your inspiration and spirit of creativity. Ponder upon your years as a student – which must come to finish – and know that you may choose to never stop learning. Reminisce the days from when you were still a child and be reminded that no one should stop you from being curious. Explore the world without plane tickets cause the world will eventually run out of paper. Always be thankful because one day you’ll never be able to say it no more. Give and give because you’re not a keeper. Grow a tree and make sure it outlives you – take time to realize that you wither! Life is finite
but death is immeasurable in the sense that no one really knows the right time to die. ‘Something too deep’ or ‘something too high’ may always exist – unfathomable and limitless… But always reach out! Attempt to conquer the surface or the bottom. All of us will come to a point when we’d say “it’s enough” but let imagination remain infinite. Be frustrated that you’re encased in a box and let your anger break it. Shatter your mirror and stop telling yourself you’re just you. Satisfy yourself with imagination like how an artist is gluttonous of his dreams.

Erratum: Election Issue. In the Atenews assessment of Miles Galicia, SAMAHAN treasurer, Atenews released the misleading statement "While there were no visual materials or publication infographics visible around campus, an update about the budget allocation for the first and second semester of the school year was posted on the SAMAHAN Facebook page." This statement implied that Galicia failed to have materials released in campus. The first part of the sentence should have been "While the visual materials or publication infographics were not visible around campus,. Atenews apologizes for any negative impacts from this assessment.
