(6) £80-120 (+18% BP*) Lot 1 1. Two Ottoman textiles: the first a small cotton quilt, early 20th century, 68in. x 54in. 173cm. x 137cm. with deep filling. Small hole one end. Pale blue field block printed with all over sprays of flowers within a floral border. The second a cotton bokche, circa 1940s-50s, 36in. 91cm. sq. Purple cotton ground block printed with a basket of flowers within floral cartouches and sprays of flowers; lined with fine muslin. Some fading. (2) £100-150 (+18% BP*)

Lot 6 6. Bokhara ruidjo (bridal bedspread), Uzbekistan, late 19th century, 90in. x 62in. 229cm. x 58cm. Undyed cotton ground embroidered in coloured silks principally in basma stitch with large flowerheads within scrolling flowering tendrils; lined with undyed cotton. Many repairs to the plain centre panel with a watermark line at the base; other surface marks. £300-400 (+18% BP*)

Two Uzbek suzanis, Uzbekistan, early 20th century, the first dark red silk tie dyed and silk embroidered, 103in. x 70in. 262cm. x 178cm.; the second yellow cotton ground prayer suzani embroidered principally in basma stich, 55in. x 38in. 140cm. x 97cm. Lot 5 Lot 2 2. Two Ottoman embroideries, circa 1900s, the first a long panel, 126in. x 25in. 320cm. x 65cm. Embroidered in chain stitch in gold coloured silks, the centre panel worked four times with the sultan’s tugra; floral panels to either end; lined. Some wear; small holes and few surface marks. The second a similar embroidery, 57in. x 11in. 145cm. x 28cm. Closely embroidered with boteh and flowers. Small surface mark. (2) £100-150 (+18% BP*)

5. Syrian quilted patchwork cotton jacket, early 20th century, 19in. Underarm to underarm; length of sleeve, 17in, 43cm. From underarm to cuff edge. Red and green cotton patchwork with blue cotton quilted lining. Some wear and small holes. Together with wide Ottoman red and yellow check silk pyjama trousers, 20th century. (2) £100-150 (+18% BP*)

Lot 7 7. Modern suzani, Uzbekistan, second half 20th century, 85in. x 57in. 216cm. x 145cm. The undyed cotton ground embroidered principally in pale yellow, pale apricot and light green silk with a central tree and pomegranates filling the field within a flowerhead border. Lot 8 8. Ottoman silk and metal thread embroidered coverlet, early 20th century, 69in. x 49in. 175cm. x 125cm. Pale green satin ground intricately embroidered in coloured silks and metal threads with individual motifs in the cartouche shape field with floral spandrels enclosed within densely embroidered floral borders. The coverlet now lined with fine cotton; the edges unfinished. £150-250 (+18% BP*)

Lot 10 10. Ottoman velvet çatma, Brusa, north west Anatolia, early 19th century, 32in. x 18in. 81cm. x 46cm. Worn and with shattering to the ground. Maroon silk velvet of floral border around a central medallion. Framed and glazed. £100-150 (+18% BP*)

11. Ottoman velvet çatma, Brusa, south west Anatolia, early 19th century, 23in. x 46in. 59cm. x 117cm. Wear and corrosion to the dark brown velvet. Sides and ends with narrow strip of applied glue. Raised silk velvet on a linen ground now laid on board. An attractive panel from the same set as those previously offered in these Rooms: Lot 1737 6th March 2013; Lot 1723 2nd October 2013 and Lot 232 1st October 2014. £200-300 (+18% BP*)

Lot 9 9. Uzbek suzani, Uzbekistan, first half 20th century, 74in. x 55in. 188cm. x 140cm. A few small holes. The natural cotton ground embroidered in coloured wools in tambour stitch, the field filled with all over flowers, the wide border of large flowerheads and pomegranates. Unlined. £300-400 (+18% BP*)

Lot 12 12. Moroccan Akhnif (shepherd’s cloak), circa 1930s, worn by the Berber peoples of Ait Ouaouzguite of the High Atlas. Dark brown wool with a red wool panel at the back, embroidered in coloured wools and fringed. A heavy and substantial winter cloak. Lot 15 15. Afghan quilted coat, Afghanistan, first half 20th century, 22in. underarm to underarm; 46in. from neckline to hem. 56cm. x 117cm. long. Dark blue wool with narrow variously coloured stripes; lined with ivory and light red check wool. Slight wear in places with small repairs. £100-150 (+18% BP*)

Lot 14 14. Ottoman(?) embroidered prayer hanging, early 20th century, 62in. x 45in. 158cm. x 1.14m. The fine undyed cotton ground exquisitely embroidered in coloured silks in very fine chain stitch. The prayer arch formed from a basket of flowers at the top from which hangs a central floral arrangement on a blue chain; a column of entwined flowers each side with a basket at the base of each column; a single floral spray in each top spandrel; all within a narrow trailing floral border. Lined undyed cotton and with velcro strip at the top verso. £300-500 (+18% BP*)

Tekke Turkmen chyrpy (young woman’s ceremonial coat or mantle), Turkmenistan, first half 20th century, 25in. underarm to underarm; 42in. 107cm. from neckline to hem; the raw black silk finely embroidered in red, yellow and ivory in fine kesdi lacing stitch. Lined with striped and floral cotton. £100-150 (+18% BP*)

17. Kerman patteh or embroidered shawl, south east Persia, late 19th century, 74in. x 52in. 188cm. x 132cm. The rich deep terracotta wool ground densely embroidered with a central circular ‘sun’ motif with half ‘sun’ motifs at the edges of the field and large floral boteh in each corner; floral medallion inner border and flowering plant outer border. Small holes in many places. The damage at one end presently conserved with fine netting verso. £300-400 (+18% BP*)

Lot 18 18. Rasht embroidered cover, north west Persia, early 20th century, 51in. 1.30m. square, the felted wool ground intricately embroidered in coloured silks and metal threads. Central circular medallion worked with inscriptions and flowers; within borders of flowers and cartouches of inscriptions’ narrow gold coloured metal braid outer band and plain black felted wool surround. Three Indian textiles, all mid-20th century, the first: a woven wool shawl, Assam, north east India, 64in. x 40in. 1.63m. x 1.02m. pale blue with light brown border and narrow stripes, two widths sewn together; the second and third: pair of embroidered panels, Gujarat, north west India, 37in. x 31in. 94cm. x 79cm. The cotton ground embroidered in floss silks with a central floral medallion surrounded by flowering plants within a lattice; quarter medallions in the spandrels within a leaf and flowerhead main border. Lot 19 19. Pair of Kerman embroidered wool panels, south east Persia, late 19th/early 20th century, each 32in. x 16in. 81cm. x 41cm. Latterly used as cupboard fronts. Fine wool ground splendidly embroidered in coloured wools with a central boteh motif above a tree at the base with scrolling floral branches filling the field within a narrow floral border. Lot 28 28. Chinese silk embroidered panel, late 19th century, 41in. x 29in. 104cm. x 74cm. The light terracotta silk ground embroidered in coloured silks and metal threads depicting an ivory silk embroidered elephant in ceremonial dress transporting a vase of auspicious objects with attendant bats on his back, surrounded by flowers and foliage and garden scenes. All within a silk brocaded border and lined with pale blue silk. Shattering to the silk ground and with some water marks. £150-250 (+18% BP*)

Two Rajasthani embroideries, north India, 20th century, the first a small chakla (square wall hanging); 31in. x 29in. 79cm. x 74cm. natural cotton ground embroidered with Ganesh, elephants, oxen and entertainers within inscriptions; the second a coverlet, 61in. x 53in. 155cm. x 135cm. Natural cotton ground embroidered in brightly coloured silks with shisha-work details depicting Ganesh; central medallion within a circlet of figures, surrounded by elephants, peacocks, other birds, animals and flowers; plain green cotton frilled edge; unlined. 27. Chinese informal silk robe, late 19th/early 20th century, 30in. underarm to underarm; 35in. length from collar to hem. 76cm. underarm and 89cm. long at back. Pale mauve damask silk embroidered in coloured silks with individual floral sprays and exotic butterflies; black satin facings, collar, cuffs and hem; the cuffs lined with pink silk damask; pale blue silk lining. Metal toggle fastenings; one fabric loop broken. £200-300 (+18% BP*)

Lot 25 25. Two textiles, the first a ceremonial wrap or shawl, Laos, south east Asia, 20th century, 155in. x 52in. 394cm. x 132cm. Plain black cotton woven with red cotton bands with multi-coloured narrow stripes; with three rows of ornamental chain stitch embroidered bands and fringing each end. Two widths joined together. Lot 34 34. Two shawls, both late 19th/early 20th century, the first, long wool Paisley carriage shawl, 121in. x 60in. 308cm. x 152cm. Woven in a soft palette with tall, slender floral boteh around a central small floral medallion; harlequin ends. Large hole one end; other small holes; the second, fine printed wool carriage shawl with all over ‘boteh’ and floral design in purples, pinks, pale greens within a narrow chocolate brown border. Lot 31 31. Chicago 1892 commemorative bast fibre cover, 75in. x 51in. 190cm. x 130cm. Damask bast (plant) fibre cover woven with a central emblem and ‘Chicago 1892 & 3 Worlds Fair’ with an American flag above and on each side, below a splendid rendition of the American Eagle. The main border of single stars alternating with blocks of stripes. Some marks in places; repair to one corner. cf. Hardingham, M. 33. Priest’s fine white linen vestment, the hem and cuffs embroidered in red wool worked in chain stitch with scrolling vines and Latin inscriptions. Gathered across the top line to a round neck with ties and opening at the back. 39in. underarm to underarm; 58in. 147cm. long from the top of the shoulder; the sleeves, 23in. 59cm. long from underarm to cuff. Lot 124 124. Iraqi wool embroidered wedding blanket, Samawa, Marshlands of southern Iraq, 20th century, 7ft. 4in. x 5ft. 2.24m. x 1.52m. Worked in bright colours in chain stitch on a hand woven ground in two widths joined vertically. Small holes. Profusion of abstract, geometric and floral motifs, one rectangle with a bird motif and a small mammal in opposing corners; and a small frog motif in a rectangle at one end. An exhibition of these blankets was held at the NEC Birmingham as part of the Festival of Quilts in 2010. Lot 471 471. Good Khamseh Confederacy ‘morghi’ (pecking chicken) rug by the Ghani tireh of the Arab Jabbareh taifeh, Fars, south west Persia, early 20th century, 7ft. 2in. x 5ft. 8in. 2.18m. x 1.73m. Fabric tape added each end to conserve the original ends. A lovely example of this type with lustrous wool and a rich palette. Terms & Conditions of Sale Affecting purchasers and other attending the sale premises. 1. Purchasers will be deemed: a) To have inspected their lots prior to the sale; and b) To have accepted that lots are sold with all faults and imperfections specifically mentioned or not irrespective of whether they have bid in person, by commission or through an agent. 2. All goods are second hand and sold without warranty unless otherwise stated in the sale catalogue or by the auctioneers from the rostrum. Any implied warranty, condition or other term is excluded except where to do so would be unlawful. 3. The auctioneers undertake that care has been taken to see that catalogue descriptions are accurate and reliable, however these are matters of opinion only and shall not be taken to be statements of fact. 4. The auctioneers act as agents to the vendor and shall not incur liability to any purchaser for any statement, representation or warranty as to title, quality or otherwise of any lot made on behalf of and with the vendors authority. 5. The auctioneers reserve on behalf of themselves and the vendors the following rights: a) To sell subject to a reserve price b) To bid on behalf of a vendor and/or purchasers c) To refuse any bid d) To rearrange, consolidate, divide, add or withdraw any lots or vary the order of the sale e) To exclude any person from the premises if there be good reason to do so. 6. The auctioneers shall regulate the bidding and shall determine from time to time the appropriate increment needed to advance the bidding. 7. The person making the highest accepted bid shall be the purchaser as defined in these conditions 8. If a dispute arises as to any bidding then at the discretion of the auctioneers either: a) The lot to which the disputed bid relates shall immediately be put up again, or b) The auctioneer shall determine the dispute and his decision shall be final and binding on all parties.

9. a) At the fall of the hammer the purchaser is required to give his own name (or where applicable his paddle number). If he has bid on behalf of another person, company or organisation he should make this clear to the auctioneer at the time. b) If, and as required the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer the purchaser shall also give his address and/or the address if the principal and/or pay to the auctioneer all or part of the purchase price plus VAT and buyer’s premium. c) Any such payment at the fall of the hammer may be treated, at the auctioneer’s discretion, as a general deposit against all purchases, made by the purchaser on the day. d) All lots must be paid for in cash, or in other manners acceptable to the auctioneers on the day of the sale and before delivery is given. e) Failure by the purchaser to comply with sub clause (a) and (b) shall entitle the auctioneer to cancel the sale and, at his discretion, to immediately re-offer the lot in question for sale by auction. 10. No transfer of lots or sub-sale by any purchaser is recognised by the auctioneers. Purchasers shall remain liable under these conditions in respect of their own purchase under the sale. 11. Private treaty sales shall be subject to these conditions of sale where applicable. 12. All lots will be at the purchasers risk from the fall of the hammer: Purchasers are therefore advised to check that they have adequate insurance cover. 13. Purchasers who pay by cheque will not normally be permitted to remove goods until their cheques have cleared through the bank. Whether removal is permitted or not. Ownership of goods will not be deemed to pass to the purchaser until their cheque has cleared. 14. All lots must be cleared from the sale premises at the purchaser’s expense by the time stipulated or agreed by the auctioneers. 15. a) If a purchaser fails to comply with any of the preceding conditions the auctioneers may cause the lot in respect of which the failure is made to be resold by public sale without warranty or reserve and without notice to the purchaser.

b) If upon resale as aforesaid a lower price is obtained foe any lot that was obtained on the first sale, the difference in price together with all costs and charges attending the resale shall be a debt due from the purchaser in default at the first sale. c) Alternatively the auctioneers may, at their discretion, store the lot and recover reasonable charges for doing so from the purchaser. 16. Rescission Notwithstanding any terms of these conditions if, within 14 days after the sale, the auctioneers have received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in their view the lot is a deliberate forgery and that within 21 days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the auctioneers in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer and if the auctioneers consider in the light of the entry in the catalogue, that the lot is a deliberate forgery than the sale of the lot will be rescinded and purchase price refunded. In the event of a dispute then the matter will be settled by arbitration. 17.
