a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand

Hi all, and welcome to the August edition of Artists Down Under. What a strange world we are currently living in, with borders being cut off from other states and poor Melbourne being back in lock down, it’s a little hard to keep up with - Stay safe everyone. At least our artists still have their muse alive and waiting to create amazing art for you all. This month is all about art and our artists’ awesome imaginations and talent. We have another Monthly Photographic challenge to delight you with, this month the theme was “clocks”. Andrew Haysom has another edition of his Photoshop Tutorial tips to share with you all. The Redlands Digital Artists Group has another rendition of their “Chinese Whispers” Series to share.

Our very talented Feature Artist this month is Sharyn Walker. I know you will love this article on Sharyn and enjoy reading about her artistic journey. Last but not least, our artists have had another very successful month with their competitions and exhibitions, so please take the time to read through their successes. Don’t forget to take the time to visit our website at

DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS

STAGE 1

CHINESE WHISPERS #33 “MYSTICAL MYTH”

Maureen Maxwell

I started our collaboration this month with images of the wreck of the SS Maheno located on the ocean side of Fraser Island, in Queensland. It washed ashore in a storm on a trip from New Zealand in 1935. Ever since then it has been a drawcard for photographers who can reach the site. It is a long 4WD drive across the island, and then a drive north along the beach. I added a few elements, and then a Knight in full armour to give it a different time line. Pam picked up on this different era and took it so much further. She has created a wonderful story full of drama, and interest, that keeps you exploring every aspect of the image, and creating your own version of the story.

Meet your artist Sharyn Walker Yarra Valley Melbourne (Vic)

Website :

52

https://changeoffocussports.com.au https://www.changeoffocus.com.au

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I was born and bred in Melbourne and am now living in the beautiful Yarra Valley. I am a Mum of 3 grown up children and Nana to 2 gorgeous grandchildren. I have always had a camera in my hand but photography was never something that I saw as my future. Just over 9 years ago there was lots of changes in life and now Photography is my life. My happy place is anywhere with a camera in my hand. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I stumbled across photo artistry a few years ago and thought this looks like a bit of fun so I began the process of learning and improving my editing skills and now it is a big part of what I do for a job. I’m a sports photographer with a difference and photoartistry helps me create my images. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I enjoy creating as it’s an escape from this sometimes crazy world. Anything is possible within my art. It’s a chance to let my imagination wander, nothing is forbidden and many times you end up somewhere completely different to where you started, or thought you were heading. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? There are many different approaches used. I create all the time as I am a full time photographer of sports, teams and portraits, mainly and as I create templates for my clubs they are all personalised to include logos and club colors. When I do my creative pieces I sometimes have a plan using my journals with sketches and notes and other times it’s just a matter of sitting down and see what happens. What does your art mean to you? My photography is my world, I have a successful sports photography business but my creative art is my escape. It’s a reason for keeping fun in a job that can sometimes be stressful to meet deadlines but the artistry has no timeline or expectations, it’s like a meditation and the only person I need to be happy about the images is me. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Has it changed me? Of course it has, it’s given me the resources and ways to improve my skills and realise that the possibilities of creating are endless. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? There is no one in particular, but this group is an amazing source of inspiration. Whilst I don’t always post on the page I am always looking at everyone’s images and trying to work out the different techniques used. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? My future is to increase my business in photography and help other emerging photographers to join this course so that they can see the endless possibilities of what they can achieve. I was once someone who hated editing and now it is a love. I want to learn new techniques and continue to create at every opportunity.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION MASK EDGE CLEAN-UP CREATING A SIMPLE ACTION By Andrew Haysom

This article explains how to create a simple Action in Photoshop, and at the same time talks about one of my favourite ways to clean-up selection fringes/halos around the edges of layer masks. While there are lots of different ways to clean up the edges of a layer mask in Photoshop, like the sliders in Select and Mask, the Min and Max filters or the Layer Matting functions, I find that sometimes for a good result nothing beats a bit of manual clean-up with the Brush tool. Often there are different parts of your mask that will need different clean-up and the rather “global” nature of some of the other methods doesn’t work well. To that end, I have a sequence of Photoshop instructions that I found I was often using to help me in this mask edge clean-up task that I have put into an Action, and it is now one I use all the time. An Action in Photoshop is just a way to “record” a series of instructions or steps in Photoshop, and then you can play them back by running (or playing) the recorded Action. The sequence of steps I found myself executing a lot for mask edge clean up was the following; - Cmd (or Ctrl) clicking the mask to create a selection of it - Contracting the selection (I do it by a single pixel, but amount is up to you) using Select / Modify / Contract - Inverting the selection (so that effectively the black part of the mask is selected) using Select / Inverse - Feathering the selection (this is optional, I feather it by 0.5 pixels) using Select / Modify / Feather - Activating the default white/black colours and making black the foreground colour using the “D” and “X” keys - Activating the brush tool using the “B” key - Hiding the “marching ants” Once these steps are complete then you are ready to start brushing away your mask edge halo/fringe. During the edge clean-up process you may also want to “brush in” some of the white area inside the mask edge. If so, simply invert the selection by pressing the Shift+Cmd(Ctrl)+I keys, then select white as your foreground colour.

66

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) Recording a New Action Open the Actions panel and you’ll see a number of icons along the bottom of the panel. (see Figure 1) Press the Create New Set icon and provide a name for the set (or folder) that will contain your new Action. Press the Create New Action icon and the New Action dialog will display (see Figure 2).

[Fig 1 - Action Panel]

[Fig 2 - New Action]

Choose a name for your new action and then choose the set you created in the previous step. Optionally here you can also assign a Function Key that can be used to run the Action, as well as a Color that can be used to highlight the Action in the Actions panel. When all of the above is done press the Record button, then simply execute the steps you want to record. Be sure to have prepared to execute them by having Photoshop “ready” to do so. For example to record the above steps I had to have made sure to have a file open that had a layer in it with a layer mask on it. When you have finished the required sequence of steps, press the Stop Recording icon at the bottom of the Actions panel. If you are recording my Mask Edge Clean-up Action you might have noticed something. You probably pressed Cmd(Ctrl)+H to hide the “marching ants” as the last step. You will notice that this step has not been recorded for you. There are a few Photoshop keystrokes that cannot be recorded, but there is a way to include them in your action.

67

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)

Select the step in your Action after which you want the command inserted (in our case above that is the current last step “Select brush”. Open the Action Panel drop-down menu by clicking the “three lines” icon at the top-right of the panel (see Figure 3).

[Figure 3 - Actions Panel drop-down menu]

Choose the Insert Menu Item command from the drop-down menu. The Insert Menu Item dialog is displayed (see Figure 4).

[Figure 4 - Insert Menu Item dialog]

Now, using your mouse, choose the menu item you wish to record. In our case it is the View / Extras command (the equivalent to pressing Cmd(Ctrl)+H). Now press OK on the Insert Menu Item dialog and the command will be inserted into your action. You can reorder steps, delete steps or add steps into your recorded Actions, but for simple actions like this, I find that if I make a mistake it is easier to delete the action and start from scratch, but maybe that’s just me. So, have a think about things that maybe you often do over and over and decide if recording an action may be worthwhile. Andrew Haysom

FOREST & BIRD Online Store Bird Art by Judi Lapsley Miller

Forest & Bird’s online shop now stocks four new fine-art bird prints by photo-artist Judi Lapsley Miller, featuring the beloved tūī. Sales support Forest & Bird’s enduring advocacy work for the wildlife of Aotearoa. Judi also donates 10% of her proceeds to Zealandia EcoSanctuary. Forest & Bird is New Zealand’s leading independent conservation organisation. For nearly a century they have been protecting and restoring Aotearoa’s wildlife and wild places - on land and in the sea. Judi has been a member and supporter for over 15 years and is delighted to be able to further support their efforts through her wildlife-advocacy-inspired art. https://shop.forestandbird.org.nz/bird-art-by-judi-lapsley-miller?gn=Home&gp=3

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn

As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis Art 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research

When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
