Pantone 311 exhibition 25 February - 14 March M16 Gallery, Griffith, ACT The colour turquoise. The Marsden Art Group have created an exhibition using Pantone 311. Abstract images and images of tropical seas, glamorous women and fantasy landscapes are featured in this unusual exhibition. The colour is explored, enhanced, blended and combined. It is used to accentuate and emphasise, to create depth and generate a mood. It can be bold and dominate or quiet and serene, turquoise weaves an enigmatic passage through the exhibition. The threads of turquoise, seen as drifting strands and blocks of colour across the works of the exhibition, demonstrate a fresh energy that moves from the power of contrast to the exploration of depths and the harmony of tranquillity, exploring relationship and correlation and giving a strong sense of cohesion to the works of these often very different artists. https://www.m16artspace.com.au/new-gallery-4

Traces V exhibition 5 February - 21 March Belconnen Arts Centre, Belconnen, Canberra Belco Arts says this about the exhibition: “2020 arrived like no other year. We wanted to acknowledge, honour and pay our respect to all those who were involved in preserving life, our environment or impacted by and journeyed through the extremity of all that 2020 presented. We invited artists and creatively adventurous individuals from throughout Australia to respond to the theme of Traces V, investigating the impact of climate change, environmental devastation, global health crises and transformation, what traces they left behind (both physical and psychological) and the process of recovery and renewal.” https://www.belcoarts.com.au/traces-v/

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION DEPTH AWARE HAZE By Andrew Haysom

With the release of Photoshop CC 22.0 (October 2020) Adobe released the Depth-Aware Haze beta neural filter. This is one of a number of new filters (some in production and some in beta) that can be accessed using the Filter / Neural Filters menu command. After choosing this menu command, click the Beta Filters icon in the left navigator, and then click the Depth-Aware Haze switch (see Figure 1).

[Figure 1 – Neural Filters dialog with Depth-Aware Haze chosen]

Like many of these new filters the image is uploaded to the cloud, where Adobe’s artificial intelligence engine will analyse the image and apply the filter. This activity could take a few seconds to complete. The controls for this filter are simple. The main one is Haze which simply controls the amount of Haze applied (0 = none up to 100 = maximum amount). Adjust this slider to your taste. The Warmth and Brightness sliders adjust the warmth and brightness of the haze. Personally, I do not like the colour adjustments made by the warmth slider, and think I will do my colour grading later, but try these sliders out to see if you like the effect.

40

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)

The Output drop-down list gives you a number of options as to how the filter is applied, obviously one of the Duplicate, New Layer options or the Smart Filter option will provide you with the most flexible and non-destructive workflow. So, if you like to add some haze to your artistic images you may find this new filter a quick way to do so. I have found it produced a good result on most of the images I have tried it on. See Figures 2 and 3 for a couple of before and after examples.

DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS

CHINESE WHISPERS #40 “OH! NO!” This is another collaboration that could have gone in a number of different directions. Pam started this month’s efforts which caused me to try many different approaches. In the end I decided to go in the direction of a semi cartoon type character who is thinking ‘Oh! No! What have I done?’. ENJOY!

Meet your artist Rosa Perry Springfield Lakes, QLD Australia

Website : https://rosa-perry.myportfolio.com/ https://www.flickr.com/people/rosa_perry/

60

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Springfield Lakes, Queensland. I’ve always been creative since childhood but it took me many years to listen to my creative soul and do something about it. It was when I became disillusioned by my career path that I finally listened to my intuition . . . and art rushed back into my life, so I made the transition from a career professional to building a life I love as an artist and I never looked back. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? My passion was photography but my poor DSLR camera mostly sat in my cupboard at home. Work was so time consuming; I hardly used my camera at all. So, I eventually decided to simply use the camera that was always on me: my iPhone. I started capturing images on the go with my iPhone, and those were fun, but I wanted to combine my other artistic skills with my photographs and the only way I could do that was with a scanner and a software editing program. It was then I discovered Photoshop. And what a learning curve that was! I did it though. I worked at it, and eventually I could weave some magic in Photoshop, combining my photos with various scanned images — usually bits and pieces of old books, magazines, my calligraphy and sketches. I loved the outcome of textured photos but wanted to take what I learned to the next level. And that’s when I came across Sebastian Michaels’ Creative Black & White Photo Artistry course, which was my first serious editing and artistry training course. That then led to Photoshop Artistry and the wonderful AWAKE Group. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I am predominantly inspired by nature. Nature has a way of creating unique colour combinations which are just beautiful and amazing. I love the colours of the sky, the light of the sun, the glow of the moon and stars, the colours of the earth, all living nature – it’s a never-ending harmonious spectrum. Animals also mean a great deal to my creativity and hold a special place in my heart, so they’re often depicted in my work. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? My approach differs from one piece to the next. Sometimes I see an image in my mind, which I quickly capture as a note or sketch and I’ll end up planning out a composition from there and begin collecting my materials. Other times I simply start with a blank layer in Photoshop and experiment with creating a background to get things started and then, so often it seems . . . the magic just happens. I begin combining images, and almost always the magic turns up all on its own. I think overall, the most important thing in my creative process comes near the beginning, where I’m working out the idea for each composition, hoping to convey a story.

61

What does your art mean to you? Art is part of who I am, how I express myself. When I create my art, I know who I am. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Photo artistry has definitely changed me. I’ve learnt to follow the soft voice of my inner guide which allows me to connect all my senses and freely follow my creative impulses with the freedom to express myself in my work and create art that speaks to others. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I mainly draw inspiration from my own life and being in nature. I also draw inspiration from my beautiful art families online, ADU, AWAKE and KAIZEN, and it goes without saying that Sebastian Michaels always inspires me. If I have any doubts about my art, I know by listening to Sebastian those doubts are groundless. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I’ve been fortunate in getting some commission work and that’s been quite exciting. I hope to do more of that. I also do some graphic design work as a donation for causes and charities important to me, and that’s not only been fulfilling but has brought me some wonderful exposure.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS INTRO TO BIRDS IN FLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY By Dean Hohn

For me, bird photography is one of the most challenging genres of photography I’ve ever tried. It can be extremely rewarding when it all comes together but it can also be one of the most frustrating when it doesn’t! I hate to think of the number of shots I’ve deleted that were just rubbish! Slowly over the past 18 months, I have concentrated on bird photography. I had taken the odd photos of birds if one presented itself, but I wasn’t dedicated to photographing them such as I have been since July 2019. It has been an interesting and steep learning curve. I’d like to share some of the things I feel are important to learn that will enable you to go from photographing perched birds to photographing birds in flight. I’m still learning, reading, and practicing while trying to understand more and more about the various birds in my area. One of the first things you need to do is learn the habits of birds and the habitats they frequent. The more you understand the habits of the birds, the easier it becomes to find, track and photograph them. I suggest you start off with larger slow flying birds and learn how to consistently track them with your camera, even if you don’t actually take a photo of them initially. The more practice you put in the better you will become at being able to track and anticipate what the bird will do in flight. Then all you have to do is track the bird and wait for the right moment to get the capture you want. I’m fortunate that I live near the sea and I’m only a block away from the river where there is no shortage of seagulls and other water birds to practice on. I am also fortunate to have multiple species of small birds that are prevalent where I live. They are quick, a challenge, and good to practice on once you are accustomed to tracking the slower birds. Some of the smaller birds are so fast you will need a camera that has an excellent autofocus tracking capability to enable you to have any chance of consistently being able to get shots of them.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS (CONT....) When getting ready to press the shutter button, think of the impact the composition of your photograph is going to have. Is the bird flying overhead and looking at you, is it flying towards you, or is it flying across you? These are the main considerations I’ve found that impact the feel and strength your photos. When it comes to equipment, buy the best your budget can afford. You’ll need to make a decision whether you buy a full-frame camera or a cropped sensor camera or variants thereof. I’ve always had full-frame cameras, but a cropped sensor camera provides extra reach over the full frame. Nikon 1.5x and Canon 1.6x and Micro 2/3s are 2.0x. To give you an example: A 600mm lens on a full frame Nikon camera allows you to take images at 600mm. That same lens on a cropped sensor Nikon camera gives you 900mm focal length (600mm x 1.5=900mm).

Dean Hohn - Brown Goshawk

The full frame camera allows you to crop your images without losing detail more so than a cropped sensor camera. It also allows you to process your images to a greater extent without degradation. The quality of glass (lens) is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a lens for birding. The quality of the lens is more important than the choice of camera. A poor-quality lens will never take a sharp photo, no matter how good the camera is, but a good quality lens will always be capable of taking a sharp photo no matter the body it’s on! Weight is another factor to consider. The older I get, the less weight I’m capable of carrying and handholding to shoot. I find a tripod just isn’t user friendly unless you’re set up in a blind or in a location where a perch is set up and you are waiting for the birds to come to you. I have recently started using a monopod fitted with a Wimberley Mono-gimbal head and I’m finding it assists me tremendously to be able to steadily track a bird while panning. It is also a game changer when you have a perched bird and you’re waiting for it to launch. Before I started using the monopod, invariably I would have to lower my arms to rest them and the bird would then launch, and I missed the shot. Now I let the monopod support the camera and lens while I can wait for the right moment to take the shot and my success rate has dramatically improved.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS (CONT....)

Camera settings are the next important thing to consider. I used to shoot in Aperture Priority but have recently changed to shoot ing in Manual Mode: AF-C Nikon or AI-Servo for Canon, Matrix /Evaluative metering, Auto ISO with an upper limit set that was appropriate for the camera, Shutter Speed of 1/1000s minimum but preferably up at 1/2500-1/3200s for birds in flight. Depending on the conditions and light you may not be able to achieve the ideal settings you want, so you have to adapt to the conditions. The next consideration is shooting at the highest frame rate the camera will shoot at in high burst mode. This was a big consideration for me when I decided to upgrade to my latest camera. I went from shooting 7 frames per second to 20. That in itself has been a real game changer in what I’ve been able to capture. Then it comes to Autofocus whether you use 9-point or 25-point, zone focus or 3-D tracking, it all depends on your camera and what type of birds you’re shooting. Dean Hohn - White Bellied Sea Eagle

This has been a brief introduction to photographing birds in flight. There is only one way to become proficient at tracking and photographing birds in flight and that is to practice on a continual basis and gradually reducing the size of birds, which as a general rule tend to get faster and more erratic as their size reduces.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn

As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis

Art

by Margaret Kalms

50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
