a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand

Welcome to the November edition of Artists Down Under. Time is certainly flying and it is only 7 weeks until Christmas, how scary is that. It has been a very challenging year this year so far, but we have all pulled through ok. If it has taught us one thing it would have to be appreciation for each other. Life is precious and so are you. Our Featured Artist for this month is Denise McDermott. Denise is a very talented and gifted artist, who has had many successes in both Australian and International photography competitions. Denise has a passion for photoshoots from organising right through to the finished product. I know you will all love her work. A very special Happy 4th Birthday goes out to our Redlands Digital Artist group, who this month celebrate their 48th edition in their series “Chinese Whispers”. I hope you have all followed their journey each month and enjoyed the work that they have created for you all. Our very loved Photoshop Guru, Andrew Haysom, has been busy at it again creating another of his Photoshop Tips for everyone to enjoy. This month it is on “Flattened Images”. For our Monthly Artist’s challenge this month, I set our artists the task of creating an image with just a touch of colour, and they never let me down. I know you are all going to love what they have created for you. Well that’s it for me, until next month stay safe and take care of each other.

Meet your artist Denise McDermott Port Macquarie, NSW Australia

Website :

www.imagesbydenise.net

https://artistsdownunder.com.au/artist-2/denise-mcdermott/

48

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I am retired and live in Port Macquarie, NSW. I live in a beautiful seaside town so photography happens often. When Covid struck, I decided to try my hand at still life, since I couldn’t travel and during lockdown couldn’t do a studio shoot. I’m looking forward to the freedom of travel, at least within the State as things open up. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry and what inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I wanted to take my photography into the concept realm and then I found Sebastian’s Photo Artistry course. I spent a year following it. Then I spent a year doing the Awake lessons and found that my creative knowledge and enjoyment was deepened from following this course. Then I followed Kaizen for a while also. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art ? I am inspired by other artists, fairy tales, fantasy literature and sci-fi. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I start with an idea or theme. Then my partner Mike and I talk about a photoshoot that would depict the theme and which model would be able to carry off the character we have in mind. Then we assemble costume pieces and props. Then we schedule our photoshoot. After shooting, we look at our images and then the creation begins. Sometimes an image appears to me while I am shooting the model in costume. Sometimes an image will come to me when I see the photos and the expression on the model’s face. What does your art mean to you? My art means a lot to me because I can express myself or my ideas in a non-verbal way. I put the art out there and let viewers take what they will from it. During an exhibition, it is really interesting to hear people discuss an image and what they think it means. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Photo artistry has added another dimension to my photographic life. I shoot everything, from night sky to landscape, nature, macro, people, and underwater. Using photos of people in costume has helped me explore different ideas. I enjoy the collaboration of a photoshoot. And it has led me into exhibiting which is very rewarding.

49

Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? My inspiration doesn’t come from any one person. I look at art on Pinterest, Deviantart, and Youtube (for speedart tutorials).

Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I am working on a major project for next May when Mike and I have an exhibition at a local art gallery. My project will depict the emotions involved in moving from your homeland halfway around the globe to a new country. I have scoped it out on paper but still have to plan the photoshoot. For this project, I have been examining the works of Brooks Shaden for inspiration on colour toning and cohesion of half a dozen pieces of art. It’s challenging. I am also part of a group of women photographers in my area who will exhibit nature images at a local gallery.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION DOES YOUR FLATTENED IMAGE LOOK DIFFERENT? By Andrew Haysom

Have you ever flattened your layered Photoshop image, or perhaps just created a Stamp Visible Layer, and the appearance of the image has changed somewhat? There are two reasons that I know of for this to happen and I will try and explain why, and to a degree what you can do to avoid the issues, in this article. The first reason has to do with the way that Photoshop renders the image you see on the screen. When you are viewing your image zoomed out smaller than 100% Photoshop is blending “image previews” in order to speed up the screen rendering. In most cases this will look identical to the “actual image”, but in some cases there will be a slight difference. What this means is that to get a true render of your image you should view it at 100% and tweak it to where you want it before flattening it. Often the differences will be very subtle, but occasionally can be very noticeable. See Figures 1-4 for a recent example I came across. Note the quite extreme differences on the doors and side of the car in the example, between the layered (unflattened) image at 63% and all the other examples, which are identical. Thanks so much to Penny de Jong for bringing the example to my attention and for allowing me to use it in this article. What this means is that only the image viewed at 100% can be taken as a reliable version of the true image. Get into the habit of checking your images at 100% before flattening them, or before creating Stamp Visible layers (which are the same as a flattened image). The second way that your image can potentially change when you flatten it is if you still have some areas of partial transparency in your image. When you flatten an image, transparent areas are filled with white. Any pixels that are partially transparent (set to an opacity less than 100%) without an opaque background behind them will change in appearance.

62

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)

[Fig 1 – Layered file at Fit Screen (63%)]

[Fig 2 – Layered file at 100%]

[Fig 3 – Flattened file at Fit Screen (63%)]

[Fig 4 – Flattened file at 100%]

63

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) The best way to demonstrate this is with a quick example. The four layer file shown in Figure 5a consists of; - a transparent bottom layer, - a second layer where one half is white and the other transparent, - a third layer with a rectangle of black pixels on a transparent background that is set to 75% opacity overlays some of the white pixels and some of the transparent background - a fourth layer simply provides a thin black border using a layer mask

[Fig 5 (a,b,c,d) – Transparency example] Figure 5b and 5c show the resultant image before flattening it (with both the transparency grid turned on and off). You’ll note that the black pixels at 75% opacity on the white and transparent backgrounds look distinctly different shades of grey. When the image is flattened (see Figure 5d) the different shades disappear and the whole rectangle appears the same. This example is quite simple, contrived and obvious, but if you are in the habit of starting off your images with a blank layer, then building up layers with potentially not fully opaque areas, it is possible that flattening your image will result in changes in tone and colour. Obviously one way to avoid this is to start off with an opaque background, like a plain white background, rather than a transparent one. If you weren’t aware that the Transparency Grid can be turned off, as well as changed in size and colour, this can be done in the Transparency & Gamut section of the Photoshop preferences (see Figure 6).

[Fig 6 – Removing the Transparency Grid]

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn

As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis

Art

by Margaret Kalms

50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Share ‘EndoWomanArt’ with your friends on social media to raise awareness and money for women’s health! We all need clothes & household goods. Buy yourself a treat or buy a special gift for your friends. Make your shopping count! Remember 50% of profit goes to endometriosis research!

Margaret

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
