Welcome to our March edition of Artists Down Under.

Autumn is finally here. Such a pretty time of the year as the leaves start to turn into magical colours, the weather starts to cool and our clocks get turned back in time.

This month we have a bumper edition for you, our newest segment “Coffee & Pixels” launches the first of their challenges and has received a huge response. It’s amazing how you can all start with the same image and everyone’s interpretation is different of that image.

Maureen has delighted us with a very interesting interview with Lynsey Stirland-Mitchell (aka CatBeagle Creations), a must read.We have our most popular article on Photoshop tips from our much loved Andrew Haysom, this month on “Controlling Colour and Luminosity”, plus the girls from the Redlands Digital Group share another image from their “Chinese Whispers” series.

The ladies from the Art Buddies share another of thier Quotes Challenge with us, resulting in some awesome images, well done ladies.

This month I share with you “Art by Karen Waalwyk”. Karen is a extremely talented artist & has put together a series of cat images for you all, these images are truly extraordinary, such detail.

And let’s not forget our amazing artists images, plus our artists fun Monthly Artistic Challenge.

Well that’s it from me, stay safe, enjoy life and look out for one another.

DIFFERENTIATION OF A VISION

‘COFFEE and PIXELS’

Last month we announced an additional benefit for our members called ‘COFFEE and PIXELS’. Our plan is to have a virtual catchup, during the daytime, to share artistic ideas, ask questions and engage in lively conversation.

Our first meeting was held on Tuesday 4th February. My co-admins Julie Powell, Penny de Jong and myself are delighted with the success. Initially, Julie shared a portrait of a model called Alexi with us. We three then created a totally different artistic image using Alexi’s portrait and revealed these at the meeting. They were enthusiastically received.

Since then the Alexi portrait has been shared with our members to create their own artwork. The uptake has been incredible. So many people have taken up the challenge and created artwork with Alexi as the focus. Each image is significantly different and demonstrates a variety of ideas and techniques.

The final images are shown here for your enjoyment.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION

CONTROLLING COLOUR AND LUMINOSITY

Adjusting your image can often have unwanted effects. Darkening or lightening your image, or increasing or decreasing the contrast, can create unwanted changes to the colour. For example dodging and burning can create unwanted changes to your colours if not approached carefully.

Similarly, making changes to the colour in your image can have unwanted effects on the luminosity.

The usual way to control this is with blend modes.

Use Luminosity blend mode on adjustment layers where you want to restrict the adjustment to only affect the luminosity. For example, using lightening or darkening Curves layers set to Luminosity blend mode and a low-flow brush on a black layer mask, is a good way to conduct your dodging and burning.

Use Color blend mode on adjustment layers where you want to restrict the adjustment to only affect the colour. For example, use Color blend mode on Hue Saturation or Selective Color adjustment layers to make colour adjustments that don’t affect the luminosity

If you are someone who loves using Curves (or Levels) for colour and luminosity changes I strongly recommend creating two layers, one set to Luminosity blend mode and one set to Color blend mode, then use these to adjust luminosity and color separately, it gives you much more control.

The Luminosity / Colour Split

Here’s another way to achieve the ultimate control that I’ve tried with some success for some of my abstract work where I want to make very careful adjustments, it involves splitting the image into two layer components, the luminosity and the colour, and then using clipped adjustment layers to target these layers individually to make your adjustments.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT .....)

Here’s how to do it;

• Add a Solid Color adjustment layer and set the colour to 50% grey (H = 0, S = 0, B = 50% or hex code #808080).

• Change the blend mode of this layer to Color.

• Press Cmd+Shift+Opt+E (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E (Windows) to create a stamp visible layer and name this layer Luminosity. This layer contains the Luminosity values for your image. Leave it at Normal blend mode.

• Make the Luminosity layer invisible by clicking the eye next to it in the layer panel.

• Change the blend mode of the 50% grey layer to Luminosity.

• Press Cmd+Shift+Opt+E (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E (Windows) to create a stamp visible layer and name this layer Colour. This layer contains the Color values for your image.

• Change the blend mode of this Colour layer to Color and drag it above the Luminosity layer.

• Turn on the visibility of the Luminosity layer.

• You can now discard (or make invisible) the 50% grey layer.

You’ll be left with a layer stack similar to that shown in Figure 1a, with the luminosity data on one layer and the colour data on another.

[Figure 1 – Splitting the Luminosity and Colour]

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT .....)

Now you can “clip” adjustment layers that you only wish to affect the luminosity to the Luminosity layer, and “clip” adjustment layers that you only wish to affect the colour to the Colour layer. Figure 1b shows an example of this.

Figure 2 shows an example of what these split layers look like.

As many of you know, I create many abstract digital art pieces involving gradients. Adjusting these can often cause banding and artifacts if not done carefully. Using this “split” method has worked well for extreme control over luminosity and colour.

INTERVIEW WITH

LYNSEY

Thank you, Lynsey, for doing this interview. You have been a member of the ARTISTS DOWN UNDER group for many years. You are also a member of the international AWAKE, and the advanced KAIZEN, Photo Artistry groups.

You were a Featured Artist in our Artists Down Magazine in September 2021. Your images have also appeared in the international magazine Living the Photo Artistic Life.

One of the reasons for doing a series of interviews for our magazine is to enable our members to get to know each other a little better. I also think our general readers will be interested to hear more about your creative journey.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN ARTISTIC, AND HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN PHOTO ARTISTRY?

No, I was never the creative type, I can only ever remember one image I made in art class that I was proud of, and no one else seemed to concur with my opinion of it.

One thing that did interest me, however, was photography, in as much as it was one of things I wanted to explore when I had the time.

Well, in 2016, I did have the time, and I did start to explore photography, but I found it didn’t actually hold my interest for long, which I put down to my obvious lack of creativity, as I saw it any way.

Then one day I was FB scrolling and Photo Artistry came up in my feed. As soon as I saw the art being produced in The Photo Artistic Magazine, I was amazed and wanted to be able to do that. Something I knew I was good at was computing and software manipulation, so was this a hobby I could enjoy, and even possibly be good at? I had to give it a go. That was a few years ago now and I’m still here, and I’m still enjoying it.

INTERVIEW WITH LYNSEY STIRLAND-MITCHELL

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE YOUR STORYTELLING CREATIONS?

I still don’t consider myself a particularly creative person, I don’t have a heap of images tearing around in my head just bursting to get out.

I respond best to challenges, being given a set of criteria to work with.

I joined a FB group of folks when I first started Photo Artistry, who were also just starting their Photo Artistic journeys. We meet (virtually) once a week to discuss what we’ve been doing, any difficulties we’re having, set challenges, send each down rabbit holes, and generally inspire one another to keep creating and trying new things.

And, of course, like most of us I’m sure, I’m constantly inspired by the fabulous work produced by everyone in our photo artistry world.

YOU CREATE A VARIETY OF IMAGES THAT ARE FREQUENTLY WHIMSICAL, QUIRKY, STORYTELLING AND VARIED. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOUORITE GENRE?

Surrealism is by far my favourite genre. Through a strange set of circumstances at school I was given a book on Salvador Dali, and I was entranced.

I like anything that’s a little quirky, a bit hard to get your head around, or on the dark side.

The Wind Changed Hallo!

INTERVIEW WITH LYNSEY STIRLAND-MITCHELL (CONT...)

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE TECHNIQUES YOU USE TO CREATE YOUR ART WORKS?

I don’t generally have much of an idea when I sit down to create a piece.

As I said earlier, I like a challenge to give me parameters, then I gather images from my stash that I think will best suit and just start throwing them together to see if an idea leaps off the screen at me. So, basically, a lot of adding layers and deleting them again till I find myself going in a direction that pleases me.

THE PHOTO ARTISTRY ENVIRONMENT WE ARE INVOLVED WITH IS A NEVER-ENDING JOURNEY WITH COUNTLESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING. DO YOU ENJOY THE LEARNING?

I do, but I find there is so much to learn that I get easily distracted by some other new course, without completing what I’m doing. One of my New Year’s resolutions this year is to concentrate on the techniques I’m most interested in and to stop looking at everything else. So, it will be interesting to see how well I stick to that!

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR CREATIVE JOURNEY TAKING YOU IN THE FUTURE? AND ARE THERE SPECIFIC PROJECTS INCLUDED IN YOUR PLANS?

I’ve never set myself a project to complete, i.e. a set of images reflecting a particular theme, I do have an idea for one, but it’s very much in its infancy, just a twinkle in my eye really.

Later this year I will be retiring, and my partner and I are planning lots of travel, so I’m not really sure how my art journey will evolve at that time, because we don’t anticipate being home that much.

However, my journey will certainly need to include learning to use the iPad and its various apps, so that I can still create when we’re on the go.

INTERVIEW WITH LYNSEY STIRLAND-MITCHELL

YOU HAVE CHOSEN AN INTRIGUING NAME FOR YOUR ARTIST’S CARD AND ENVIRONMENT. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ‘CATBEAGLE CREATIONS’?

No great intrigue really. Many years ago, I was made redundant, as the company I was working for at the time closed down. I had this great brainwave that I would start my own database management business. In the process of trying to come up with a name for the company, something catchy, a little whimsical, CatBeagle popped into my head.

In the end the business never eventuated, but I still loved the name and have repurposed it for a few things over the years.

As you know, I have one of those solid, staid, stuffy, double-barrelled surnames, which I really didn’t think would fit with the kind of art I was hoping to start producing, and what fits better with creations than CatBeagle!

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR BACKGROUND AND YOUR OTHER INTERESTS?

I’m originally from the UK, but my family emigrated to NZ when I was thirteen. Then when I was in my twenties I set off on my overseas odyssey. Well, I didn’t get very far because I arrived in Australia first, only planning to stay six months before heading to Europe, but 39 years later, I’m still here!

35 years ago I met Geoff, the love of my life, and 20 years ago we set up our own logistics business. He handles all the actual logistics, and I back it up with paperwork & computing side of things. We work very closely together and haven’t killed each other yet!

We love to travel, especially when it involves hiking. We have completed a couple of the Pilgrim Caminos, Portugal Inland, followed by walking from Geneva, right across France, to the Spanish border.

We combine these walks with our love of animals by housesitting. We have family in NZ & UK and housesitting gives us a chance to not only connect with pets, but also to spend more time in the one spot without getting under the family’s feet. Let me introduce CatBeagle House & Pet Sitting!

CLOSING COMMENTS by

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your interview Lynsey. Like me, I think many of our members and viewers will relate to many of your comments about your creative journey. Retirement will bring many benefits, and it will be interesting to see how your art progresses through your planned travels.

Quote:

This month, Christina Brunton chose the quote:

“You will need to do it even if you are not inspired.” ... quote by Sebastian Michaels.

Our Art pieces:

We’ve all created diverse art pieces inspired by the same quote. We hope our work inspires you to give it a try and share your interpretation on the Artists Down Under Facebook page. Your art is valuable to us and we can’t wait to see what you come up with!
