EDITOR’S MESSAGE Happy New Year to you all. With everyone’s “New Year’s” resolutions now in the past, I welcome you all to the brand New Year of Artist Down Under 2020. A year full of excitement, exhibitions, competitions and most importantly “Lots of amazing art”. December saw one of our artists most successful months in achieving entries into art exhibitions over the coming summer months. I hope that if you are in the vicinity of these exhibitions you can take the time and pop in to have a look and support our artists. Our favourite Photoshop Guru has kindly taken the time out over his Christmas holidays to write you all another of his fabulous Photoshop tutorials, this one being on some of the new features in PS 2020 . The Digital Artists group has given us another in their “Chinese Whispers” series. This month’s theme is all about Outback Australia.
This Monthly Artists Photographic challenge was set based on an Australiana theme. I hope you enjoy the amazing images that they have presented for you. Trish Hoskin has tarted the brand new year with an awesome interview with Jana Holden, who is an amazing artist and designer in her own right. I hope you all enjoy it. This month I present to you two incredibly talented artists as our monthly Feature Artists - Colin Killick and Denise McDermott. I hope you enjoy getting to know them a little better and their amazing art.
Meaghan Pryor - There Will Always Be A Dance
Well that’s it from me for now, I am off for a few days of R&R, to get over the New Years celebrations and to also start planning out another exciting year of this amazing magazine. So until next month, stay safe and enjoy life.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I studied geology at the ANU and Macquarie, graduating with a Ph.D. I was then employed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), where I worked for 25 years in various roles around New South Wales. In 2007 I met my future wife, Wendy. Her work with the Commonwealth Government takes her overseas and in 2010 she was offered a three year position at the Australian Embassy in Moscow. After three fascinating years in Moscow we moved to Melbourne, a city I had never lived in before. In 2018 Wendy was offered another three year posting, this time in Shanghai, where we currently reside. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? While living in Melbourne in 2015 I joined the Waverley Camera Club and Photoshop Artistry was mentioned during one of their creative photography group meetings. I followed it up. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? My quirky sense of humour together with a love of colour and design. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? Some days I get an idea and work around it – for example I saw a dinosaur skeleton in Melbourne Museum and thought if I extracted it I could do something interesting. A series of images grew from that idea. Often, though, my creativity puddle is dry, so I just start fiddling and hope something interesting happens. What does your art mean to you? Well, I am pretty chuffed when I get recognition from a site like Fusion Art. But I try not to take it all too seriously - it is, in the end, simply an enjoyable pastime. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? What has changed me in recent years has been meeting my wife and the experience of living in Moscow, Melbourne and now Shanghai. Photoartistry is something I do for pleasure, but has it changed me? Quite honestly, no. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? Recently I have become more interested in vector art and much admire the work of Romain Trystam. I have a site on Deviant Art and enjoy browsing its sometimes weird and fascinating offerings – Sylvia Ritter, Erik Johansson and Elena Dudina are just three of the artists I follow. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? As far as digital art goes, I have neither plans for the future nor any expectations. Photoartistry is a hobby - something I do for the simple pleasure of it. All the time it entertains me, I will continue. If I lose interest, I will move on to something else.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION NEW AND IMPROVED PRESET PANELS IN PHOTOSHOP CC 2020 By Andrew Haysom
New (Gradients, Patterns, Shapes) and Improved (Swatches, Styles) Preset Panels in Photoshop CC 2020 There are a number of great updates in the Photoshop 2020 version released in November 2019. One of my favourites, that is not the one getting most of the fanfare is described in this article. Photoshop 2020 adds three new preset panels for Gradients, Patterns and Shapes. Using these panels, you can easily access Gradients, Patterns and Shapes as well as organising them into folders. You can organise the items by dragging and dropping them and create/delete folders using the icon at the bottom of the panels. Folders can be moved around as well by dragging and dropping and folders can be nested within other folders. You can use the [Command/Control] and [Shift] keys to select multiple items before dragging and dropping as well. The organisation capabilities have also been added to the existing Swatches and Styles panels. Figure 1 shows the new Gradient Panel along with the associated flyout menu. Please note that if after the upgrade you don’t see the old gradients you can bring them back using the Legacy Gradients option in the flyout menu.
[Fig 1 - The New Gradient Panel showing Flyout menu]
50
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ...) Adobe have also added a lot of new gradients in Photoshop 2020, some of these are shown in Figure 2, as well as the Legacy Gradients in their folder.
[Fig 2 - The new Gradient panel after adding legacy gradients]
More patterns and a lot more shapes have been added in Photoshop 2020. Again to get access to old patterns and shapes, and the full range of new ones use the “Legacy and more options in the flyout menus.
[Figure 3]
[Figure 4]
[Figure 5]
[Fig 3 - The new Patterns panel after adding legacy and more patterns] [Fig 4 - The new Shape panel showing flyout menu] [Fig 5 - The new Shape panel after adding Legacy and more shapes]
51
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ...)
You can right-click one of the Gradients (or Patterns, Shapes, Swatches or Styles) to access a menu to allow you to Restore, Import, Export, Rename, Delete or create a new preset (see Figure 6).
[Fig 6 - Right-click menu]
In addition to organisation capability, these new panels add additional ways to more easily use these presets in your workflow. The ways you can use these new preset panels varies depending upon the layer type you are trying to apply them to, but in general you can use these new presets by clicking on them in the panel, by dragging and dropping them onto the image area, or by dragging and dropping them onto a layer or layer group in the Layers panel. The way the preset is applied depends upon the attributes of the layer. For example, if there is a text layer active, clicking on a swatch in the Swatches panel will change the fill colour for the text, however if you click on a gradient in the Gradient panel, or a pattern in the Pattern panel, the gradient or pattern will be applied to the text layer as a layer effect. With a Gradient Fill layer active clicking a gradient in the Gradient panel will change the gradient which is much quicker than the old way of having to go via the Gradient Editor screen. However please note that clicking a gradient in the Gradient panel will also change the type of gradient to the type selected in the Gradient panel flyout menu (see Figure 1). Dragging and dropping a Gradient, Pattern or Swatch preset onto a pixel/image layer will cause Photoshop to add a Gradient Fill, Pattern Fill or Solid Colour Fill adjustment layer which will be clipped to the pixel/image layer. Holding down the [Option/Alt] key while dragging and dropping will cause the new adjustment layer to not be clipped. Check out this eight-minute video from Julieanne Kost for some live examples of use -

Meet your artist Denise McDermott Port Macquarie (NSW) Australia
Website:
68
https://www.imagesbydenise.net
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. I am retired and photography and digital art are my passions. I have completed Photoshop Artistry and Awake and am now enrolled in Kaizen. I belong to the Facebook groups for Awake and Artists Down Under and enjoy seeing what members post as they complete work and travel. I really look forward to Living the Photo Artistic Life Magazine and Artists Down Under Magazine. It is inspiring to see what other members produce. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I had been interested in taking photography further but didn’t know how to accomplish that. I found Sebastian’s Photoshop Artistry course and knew I needed it. I was already a decent photographer and I began to learn how to take photographs and merge them and create effects and make more emotive images. It was a big leap in learning that was just right for me at the time. Now I’ve completed Awake and am currently in Kaizen. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I love to use my camera to capture aspects of the world that not everyone sees, e.g. the macro world, water in slow motion, the underwater world, star trails in the night sky. Then I also like to create fantasy world scenes with models shot in our home studio. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? My art is often the end result of a photo shoot. When planning the shoot, we consider the costumes, props and poses. We then invite the model to the photoshoot. We process the images and create a scene for the model to appear in. All elements in my art are my own. Often I will have scenes in my head as I prepare for the shoot. I shoot things that don’t make an interesting image on their own, such as some trees, a building, a doorway, a rock. These items form part of the story I create in an image. I have an “Idea” notebook. If something pops into my head I sketch it or write about the idea in words. What does your art mean to you? The art I produce satisfies a creative need. I make it for myself. If someone else appreciates it, that’s a bonus. I exhibit once a year along with my partner and another Kaizen friend. I exhibit to show what I have created and to encourage discussion about the subject of the image. If someone likes an image enough to purchase it, that’s great. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? I have been an amateur photographer most of my life. Doing the Photoshop Artistry course allowed me to go beyond photography and create more artistic works. Then Awake built on that knowledge and so to Kaizen. I have become more experimental in my art which is creatively satisfying. I’ve become more confident as an artist and a generally happier individual. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I get a lot of inspiration from both magazines, as I have said, but also from artists I find on the web. There is not any one person I look to, because I have found my own style and want to enrich it and fine tune it. I find some of the tutorials in all 3 courses inspiring and will watch them over and over. Even if I find one little technique I haven’t tried, I count that as a great thing. I also get inspiration from fantasy and scifi movies and series, such as Game of Thrones and Carnival Row.

Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future ? What are your next steps? My partner Mike and I have studio sessions planned with several of our models. These sessions provide us with figures that express emotions that feed into our creations. Because we live in a regional area and don’t have access to professional models with costumes, we source our own costumes and also make props. Every so often Mike or I have a vision and put together an outfit with props. Our models are ordinary people who we’ve asked to model for us. It’s a team effort and I really enjoy seeing the results. We will have another exhibition of our work at a local gallery in June 2020 with another friend who is also enrolled in Kaizen. We intend to exhibit work created since our June 2019 exhibition – so totally new works. I am also organising an exhibition called Flora 2020 which will be an exhibition of flower photography. I have a vision to fill the gallery with beautiful flowers. Some of the images will be straight photography and some will be treated artistically, like with painterly effects or textures applied. Seven of us local female photographers will participate. Without Sebastian’s courses, advice, and inspiration, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to organise such an exhibition. There’s no stopping me now.

DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS By Maureen Maxwell
CHINESE WHISPERS #26 “RACE DAY - BEYOND THE BLACK STUMP” STAGE 1
Welcome to 2020 and the first of our Digital Artists Collaboration images for this year. My friend and collaborator, Pam Henderson (our ‘Artists Down Under’ editor) decided to start this month’s round with some humour. In thinking about Australia Day coming up, I added more Australian animals and birds plus a few other things, and tried to keep the humour going.
Pam Henderson
Most Australians love our country race meetings, and our country pubs, as they are a major part of our culture. And the further Outback (or Beyond the Black Stump) you go, the more interesting events and characters there are! Pam and I wish you a year full of good health, happiness and heaps of creativity for 2020.

JANA HOLDEN INTERVIEW Trish Hoskin
Hi everyone, In this edition I would like to introduce you to Jana Holden. Jana’s name would be familiar to a lot of you from our various groups and no doubt her wonderful digital art. I contacted Jana and asked her to tell us a bit about herself and she kindly agreed to share the following. Jana, can you tell us a little about yourself and where you hail from in the United States? First of all, I would like to thank Trish Hoskin for this opportunity. It is my pleasure to be interviewed for this beautiful magazine! I am a retired teacher and as I like to say, living the good life! My husband and I live in the Chicagoland area, where he is still working. We have grown children and grandchildren who live in both Iowa and California. Have you had an artistic background for long, i.e. have you always been into art or just in later years? Being considered any kind of artist now is actually mind boggling. In my years prior to finding the digi world, I had never taken even one art class or had any art background at all. But shortly before I retired, everything changed. I started my artistic journey with an online course to learn Photoshop. At that time, I wanted to move from paper scrapbooking to digital. One thing led to the next and as they say, the rest is history. I have taken too many online classes to mention, both for Photoshop and iPhone/iPad mobile artistry. I have also dipped my toes into all kinds of art such as, acrylic painting, various inks, art journaling and card making, again through online classes. I think I am an online class junkie! Can you relate? I love it all! Do you have many influences in your life that steer you in a direction of the kinds of Digital Art that you do? Sebastian Michaels’ courses and community have been huge influences in my digital art. I know anyone reading this magazine can vouch for the same. I had the honor of providing two tutorials for the Awake course when it first began. My style has evolved a lot since then. It is always amazing to see what so many Photoshop Artistry, Awake and Kaizen members create and accomplish. There is a lot of talent out there! My digital art is also influenced by being a member on creative teams. (see below)

JANA HOLDEN INTERVIEW (Cont ...) I had the honor of being published for several years in the Somerset Digital Studio Magazine. That magazine had a profound influence on my digital artistry as well. It was a sad day when that publication was retired. How did you come to join Katie’s team and what is involved in being part of her Creative Team? I actually have the privilege of being on multiple creative teams, which I absolutely love! Katie Pertiet at Designer Digitals, Foxeysquirrel, Vicki Robinson Designs and Lynne Anzelc Designs, all at Oscraps. They each have their own unique style and products which provide me with ample opportunities to explore and develop various art styles. I spend many hours each week creating layouts for them.
How often do you “create” and do you have a wonderful area that you can lock yourself away from the rest of the world and lose yourself in your art? Or do you have to find snatched moments amongst everyday life? I do have my own “art studio” set up in our guest bedroom, which is my little oasis. I am not in there everyday, but several times a week. My primary workspace is at my desk with my iMac, where you can find me daily. Do you have any favourite designers or artists in the digital world that inspire you? In addition to the designers mentioned above, other favorites include Anna Aspnes and many of the contributing artists from Sebastian’s courses. We have such incredible access to professional artists and their work. I also enjoy NBK and Magical Reality. I am always inspired by other creative team members as well. I find it quite interesting to see how others design with like products. I also admire Tricia Dewey’s talent with her iPad artistry. Being in the “Awake” groups have you had a chance to catch up with any of the group in person or has the acquaintances with others been purely via email and other social media sites? Oh YES! I have met so many wonderful online artists in person! Truly amazing actually! Being involved in classes, teams and social media groups has been an awesome way to make such good friends from all around the world! https://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/ideas/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=31029 https://ozone.oscraps.com/gallery/showgallery.php?ppuser=19535&username=jlholden15 https://www.facebook.com/jana.holden.9 https://www.instagram.com/janaholden/ https://www.pinterest.com/janaholden/ I hope you have enjoyed reading about Jana and had a chance to view her wonderful work on the social media sites. Thanks to Jana for filling us in. Trish

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at
https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw
I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research
When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
