EDITOR’S MESSAGE Hi everyone and welcome to our March edition of Artists Down Under. We have an amazing edition this month, put together for you by our dedicated team. To be inside an artist’s mind is an amazing journey full of wonders and excitement, so I hope that when browsing through this magazine, you can share part of the adventures that we all do when creating these for you. Once again our artists continue to be very successful with their entries into worldwide competitions, holding exhibitions and being printed in overseas magazines. They just keep getting better and better. I have two amazing Featured Artists to present to you, Sandy Boles from Hervey Bay in Qld and Margaret Kalms from Canberra, ACT. Two very dedicated and talented women that I am sure you will all agree with. Our ever loving artist Andrew Haysom has some more very helpful Photoshop tips that he has kindly shared for you all. Trish Hoskin has had the delight in interviewing a very talented designer,

“G&T Designs”. It’s wonderful to be able to learn a little more about these designers personally, and how their journeys into the art world all started. Once again we are delighted to share with you the next in the Redlands Digital Artists group’s “Chinese Whispers” series, What fun is had putting together this series, never knowing what one person is sending you and never knowing where it is all going to end up.

Trish Hoskin - The Window Display

Well that’s it from me for now, I hope you enjoy this edition as much as I have had putting it together for you. Stay safe, enjoy life and never forget to release that inner child every now and then. Pam Henderson

This month’s Monthly Artists Challenge was set as a “Vintage” theme. I hope you enjoy the images they have come up with for you.

Meet your artist Sandy Boles Hervey Bay (QLD) Australia

Website :

42

https://www.sandybolesphotography.com https://www.facebook.com/photographybysandyboles

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. Originally from Kangaroo Island SA (perfect place for a childhood). I spent the majority of my working life in the Northern Territory and then my husband and I retired in Hervey Bay Queensland. Now living a life of pure enjoyment where everyday is a holiday. Everyday is lived to the full with travelling, exercising, creating in many forms, volunteering as a Heartfelt photographer, grandchildren, and a stack of unfinished courses. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I have always been a keen photographer however about 10 years ago I decided to learn as much as possible and compete nationally and internationally to gain both my Australian (AAPS) and International (AFIAP) photography honours. This took about 4 years and culminated in a trip to Austria to attend a Gala Function with photographers from all over the world to accept a Gold FIAP medal. By this time I had travelled many countries taking photos and after admiring the work of a former Photo Artistry member (Tracey Pogson), I enrolled in Photo Artistry with the aim of taking photography further. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I love looking at all the beautiful pieces of art that other members create however I’m not really sure what inspires me. I just “mess around” every now and again with no particular goal in mind. My external hard drives are full of experiments and unfinished ideas. I usually start with, “I wonder how this would look with that” overlayed, blended, added to, etc. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I start with a vague idea and then just see where it takes me. Like most creative people I jump from one thing to another and our garage is full of boxes marked with certain crazes that I have embraced fully and then abandoned. I am currently obsessed with taking photography off the wall so am up cycling furniture with photography elements included, making clothing and soft furnishings from my photography printed on fabrics which will be exhibited locally during February. What does your art mean to you? Art in any form for me is my means of total relaxation. I have an amazing room set up with my iMac and Cintiq, which provides the perfect “Woman Cave”. Included in the home is a wonderful husband who knocks on the door, whispers the password and enters with my coffee and biscuit. Life can not get much better. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? I haven’t really noticed any change since starting with photo artistry. It does provide the tools to clean up any images and recompose or add to, however I have a lot to learn before I would ever think I was even close to knowing half of what is available. I use my own images so have been able to put them to good use with bags, clothing, cards, and soft furnishings. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? There are so many people whose work I admire, with our editor Pam Henderson being one on top of the list. I also love the skill that Jill Johnson (AWAKE) has. The images of my own that I like the most are ICM (in camera movement) which is not to everyone’s taste but I started this after being inspired many years ago by Ursula Abresch with her abstract images. I absolutely love images/art by Linda Hollier who creates amazing iphone art with both movement and a connection with the subject. Linda has prints on upcycled wood and fine gauze like veils. My favourite landscape photographer is Marsel van Oosten as his work is unique, simple lines, and artistic without being manipulated. My favourite digital artists are Luisa Azevedo (Hey Luisa IG) and Marcel Van Luit (IG), I am booked to do a workshop in March in Sydney with Sujata Setia so am very excited about that.

43

Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? Hopefully my next steps will be to complete a few of the courses that I have on the go. I’m also researching fabrics from overseas for printing however this may become yet another unfinished project! Thankyou for the opportunity to feature in this amazing magazine which I love seeing each month.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION SOME USEFUL PHOTOSHOP SHORTCUT KEYS By Andrew Haysom

Here are a few Photoshop shortcut keys you may not know. Cycle Between Open Documents

Adding Layers/Channels as Selections

When you have lots of open documents, especially when there are enough to make some of the tabs not visible, this keystroke can be very useful.

We all likely know that we can hold the [Cmd]/[Ctrl] key and click on a layer or a channel to make the layer or channel the active selection.

To cycle through all open documents, hold the [Cmd]/[Ctrl] key and press the Tilde key (~). Also hold [Shift] to reverse the direction.

However did you know that if you hold the [Cmd+Shift]/ [Ctrl+Shift] and click you will add the layer or channel to the existing selection.

Activate the Layer or the Layer Mask

Also, if you hold the [Cmd+Option]/[Ctrl+Alt] and click you will subtract the layer or channel from the existing selection.

You always want to make sure that you have the right thing active, and one common mistake is to have the layer (e.g. the image) active and not the layer mask. To make the layer itself active hold the [Cmd]/[Ctrl] key and press the 2 key. To make the layer mask active hold the [Cmd]/[Ctrl] key and press the backslash key (\).

Finally, if you hold the [Cmd+Shift+Option]/[Ctrl+Shift+Alt] and click you will load the selection that is the intersection of the layer or channel and the existing selection. Moving Layers Up and Down the Layer Stack Hold the [Cmd/Ctrl] key and press the left and right square bracket keys [ and ], to move the currently active layer or layers down and up the layer stack respectively.

Changing the Selected Layer using the Keyboard Hold the [Opt/Alt] key and press the left and right square bracket keys [ and ], to change the currently active layer to the layer below or above the currently active layer respectively.

DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS By Pam Henderson

CHINESE WHISPERS #28 “ARTING AROUND” STAGE 1

This month the theme was set and the challenge was certainly on ... what to do ... OMG, what to do ... we all know that feeling, but it kicks the brain (eventually) into action, and the rusty cogs start churning away with different ideas. It’s such an amazing feeling when you start to see it all coming into play. You step back and look at the work that you have done compared to what you had when you first started and you think to yourself “Wow! Did I do that?”. Grab a few friends and give it a go, you never know what you are going to be given and you certainly never expect it to end the way it does, but the fun you have along the way, and the friendships that you build are priceless. Chinese Whispers, the results are amazing. We hope you enjoy this month’s collaboration as much as we did creating it for you.

Meet your artist Margaret Kalms Canberra (ACT) Australia

Website:

84

http://www.endowomanart.com https://www.facebook.com/LifeWithEndometriosis/

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Canberra, capital of Australia. Canberra is a beautiful city with lots of nature parks and thousands of birds and kangaroos. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? An advertisement a few years ago intrigued me. The images shown had a quality I liked. Joining the Awake and Photo Artistry courses have opened up my photography to whole new realms. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? Everything. Truly, if it’s not an interesting subject, it can be an interesting texture. I can find things to photograph literally anywhere in the world. Photo Artistry has made me see potential in everything! Not only has Photo Artistry opened up a new way of seeing, it’s given me confidence to put in the planning and effort to create the art of my imagination. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I have 4 ways of doing my art: 1. Exploring themes for group shows, exhibitions and online competitions, 2. Trying new techniques, tutorials in Awake and Kaizen, playing with ideas and visual exploration, 3. Patterns and design for my Redbubble products, see page (in the business pages at back of magazine) https://www.redbubble.com/people/EndoWomanArt/shop. 4. My current project, ‘Life with Endometriosis’ where I’m imaging impacts of a debilitating disease and recently published a photo book. https://amzn.to/2QsewCx I’m thrilled to be invited to showcase several these images as Featured Artist because March is Endometriosis Awareness Month. What does your art mean to you? In the first 3 approaches I’m open to the joy of creating without any deep purpose or meaning, just to see what I can create. That said, I’m attracted to symbolism and objects that have meaning. The 4th has huge meanings for me and the women I photograph. Some of my images have helped women come to terms with their illness and gain meaning. They feel validated. And I feel I’m communicating with a wide audience who wouldn’t normally hear about endometriosis. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Photo artistry has deepened my interest in art generally and I attend exhibitions, galleries and museums more regularly. I love reading our magazine each month to see what amazing images our artists have created. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? For my creativity, Salvador Dali and Max Dupain, they both had amazing imaginations and a sense of the absurd, juxtapositions of objects and people in life; for my art income, Van Gough, he was supported by a stipend from his grandfather. This takes the pressure off me trying to sell everything or thinking that the only good art is art that sells now; and for compassion for women with endometriosis, Jesus, because he healed a bleeding woman thus overcoming huge prejudice (Luke 8:42-48). Unfortunately, prejudice about women’s intimate health is still active. It is still trivialised by medical professionals and is grossly underfunded and under researched. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future ? What are your next steps? While ever I have the health to move and see, I’ll keep exploring creative photoart. This is an exciting journey that can take me in many directions.

G&T DESIGNS INTERVIEW Trish Hoskin

Hi everyone, This edition I have created an article after contacting one of the dynamic duo – Gracie and Tracy of G & T Designs. I love their work and have been known to buy any kit they bring out!!!! Good advertising hey! Especially their recent “Tapestry” kit – 8 separate kits and admit I have bought them all, lol, and have yet to create very much with them at all. Hopefully as the year is winding down, I will find time. Anyway, I thought we would all love to find out how they got together and how they have managed to run a very successful on-line design store. 1. What is your background and how did you slide into Digital Designing? Many years ago, Gracie and I met on a digital scrap-booking site and hit it off. We are very different in many ways but very similar in our love of art and..... naughty sense of humour! (we are both originally from Liverpool, UK). After a few years of creating digital art (which we were both new to) and honing our skills, we got to a point that we felt that we could create some arty kits ourselves. I don’t think either of us would have had the nerve or confidence to start on our own but somehow with both of us egging the other on, we got through those learning curves and took the plunge. 2. Did you start off with your own online store or teaching digital art, or did you find it easier to become part of a larger store and have a lot of the work done for you to allow you more time to create? As brand-new inexperienced designers we did not feel that we could join any of the ‘big popular’ stores of the time so we approached a smaller store and set up shop there. Like many stores now, that store is no longer around but it helped to break us in to the way things worked and build our confidence. We then came across E-Scape and Scrap, we loved the aesthetics of the store front and approached Julie to see if she would take us in lol. It’s safe to say we haven’t looked back and Julie Mead has become a very dear friend of ours. She is so supportive, kind, helpful, easy going and funny which is why we have always remained loyal to her store, despite being approached on several occasions to join other stores. It is also lovely to be part of a warm friendly community of amazing artists and designers that setting up our own shop just doesn’t appeal. Plus, the time restraint, time better spent CREATING!

G&T DESIGNS INTERVIEW (Cont ...) 3. How do you get your ideas for your product lines? PLAYING!.. that is normally how sparks of ideas manifest. Collect ing from various copyright free/commercial use resources, researching themes/colour palettes/styles. Taking lots and lots of photos, scanning old books etc. creating lots and lots of digital brushes and drawing and painting. All of these things start as play and sometimes it takes a while for a cohesive theme to evolve but eventually it always does. 4. Recently you have created a large body of work that has spilled over into several separate kits in “Tapestry” - how did idea come about and what helped you decide it would need more than one kit to do it justice? Usually we like to mix it up with themes, colours, styles, etc. from kit to kit (low boredom threshold lol). With Tapestry Tales however, it’s been like opening up a whole new magical medieval world! I think it’s the tones of the colours and contrasts in those old paintings, the rich dark gorgeousness of layers and layers of texture melting into more richly dark and interesting backgrounds. Just so much fun to create and play with. Fortunately, our customers seem to agree, and it’s been hard to stop!!! There is a strong possibility that I need some kind of support group to step away lol!

5. What is a typical day in the life of “Gracie & Tracy Designs”? Life has changed over the years and over the last few years Gracie has taken a step back from designing. She had a few scary years when she was fighting breast cancer which thank goodness she fought like a gladiator and is now enjoying life as a brand-new grandmother to a beautiful baby girl. I am still loving creating and designing and spend probably toooooo many hours at the PC but what can you do when it makes your soul happy? 6. How far ahead do you have to create to collate a collection? It normally takes between 1 to 2 weeks to complete a collection from point of inception. 7. Do you have workshops or brainstorming sessions to come up with ideas, or do you have massive lists that you can just draw from to create a kit? When Gracie was more involved, we would knock ideas back and forth for a while before finally coming up with an idea, theme, palette. Now, as stated before, I just start playing around with bits and bobs or go in search of inspiration from great sites like Pinterest until the mojo sparks. Quite often things come to me whilst drifting off to sleep and I have to get up and jot it down......or end up at the PC until 4am working on something lol.

G&T DESIGNS INTERVIEW (Cont ...) 8. Did you have a big learning curve to be able to get the kits together - i.e. learning photoshop etc. to be able to make the relevant extractions for the images in your kits? We both came to the digital art world via a site called Daisytrail that was dedicated to users of the Serif Craft Artist software. Although this site has since closed, we met so many wonderful people on this site and many have become friends and customers. I now rely on photoshop CS6 to do most of the heavy lifting together with Corel Painter Essentials and a Wacom tablet. Being part of the Photoshop Artistry and Awake groups has been a massive eye opener and huge inspiration. Although I still have so much to learn, Sebastian Michaels is such an amazing teacher and I find something new all the time. There is nothing like that moment when the penny drops after learning a new skill that you can incorporate in your designs. Wow so there is some really interesting stuff there. I hope you enjoyed reading about the girls as much as I have getting to know them a bit better. WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research

When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
