EDITOR’S MESSAGE Welcome everyone to the latest edition of Artists Down Under. This month we have a magazine jam packed full of amazing art, interesting articles and artwork from three very talented Feature Artists. Trish Hoskin delights us with an interview from one of our own artists this month Julie Powell. The Redlands Digital Artists Group kindly share with us another of their collaborative images from their Chinese Whispers series.
Judi Lapsley Miller introduces us to a new contemporary Art Gallery based in Tamahere, Hamilton NZ. For anyone around the area it is definitely worth popping in and having a look.
Andrew Haysom has kindly shared with us another of his awesome Photoshop tutorials, this month being about Gradiant Maps and ColourMapX.
Two of our artists, Ilona Abou-Zolof and Christina Brunton, recently attended a meet up with other artists, some being our own, in Melbourne where they had a fantastic time attending workshops and relaxing at the Melbourne Zoo. They kindly shared their experiences with us.
The photographic challenge that was set for our artists this month was based on spring and what better way to celebrate spring than with Flowers.
Another successful month with our artists being published in International magazines and having great success in competitions entered, well done.
Judi Lapsley Miller continues to share with us the journey of her Art Of Birding challenges and shows us some of her talented photographers that have joined her on that journey.
This month I would like to introduce you to three of our very talented artists in our Feature Artist section - Leanne M Williams, Julia Harwood and Marjorie Lord.

the zealandia vision book release Congratulations
judi lapsley miller The Zelandia vision - to restore an inner-city valley to a prehuman ecosystem - the audacity needed to imagine that! But that’s exactly what Zealandia founder and visionary Jim Lynch did. And just a couple of decades later, this wee valley has not only transformed a city into a flourishing bio-diverse green oasis filled with rare and endangered birds, but has transformed many conservation projects in New Zealand and around the world. It was my honour to be chosen by Jim and Eve Lynch to create an artwork for the book cover of Jim’s book on the history of Zealandia. Every photograph that went into this photo-artistic composition was taken of or in Zealandia. The title was easy – it could only be called “Imagine”. The book is due to be released 24 September 2019 Limited-edition fine art prints are available in four sizes, with 10% of proceeds donated to Zealandia. Eight native bird artists have gathered together to celebrate community groups in Aotearoa who are bringing back the birds. Featuring art by Melissa Boardman, Chris Helliwell, Judi Lapsley Miller, Niels Meyer-Westfeld, Karen Rankin Neal, Hannah Shand, Carol Theologo, and Rachel Walker. Sponsored by Hon Eugenie Sage. From controlling predators in suburban gardens to supporting fenced sanctuaries, the power of a vested community to bring about positive change knows no bounds. Volunteer-based community efforts in Aotearoa have resulted in world-leading advances in conservation and restoration strategies. And these efforts are paying off locally with gardens now filling night and day with rare and endangered birds. Here in Wellington we are especially fortunate. What are now ubiquitous tūī welcome in the dawn, korimako claim their territories at morning tea, kākāriki flit by at lunchtime looking for nesting cavities, kererū fill the skies with their aerial acrobatics while we make dinner, ruru serenade us to sleep, and cheeky kākā tell us the stories of their ancestors at 2am. All our Artists have been inspired by this comeback and in this exhibition they show the beauty and tell some of the stories of our native birds. The exhibiting Artists all advocate for our precious manu māori through their art, writing, volunteering, and awareness raising. OPP ART “FROM CHAOS TO FORM” An exhibition promoting the concept of upcycling in form or function. 18-20 October 2019 from 8:30pm Images to be projected on the church spire of the Somerville Church, 497 Remuera Rd, Remuera, Auckland. Judi Lapsley Miller (Wellington artist) Salvaging waste offcuts from framing material she frames her TinyArt bird prints. The framed photographs then form the central focus of another still life image. This merging of photography and fine art composition invites a compelling discussion on trace, even before her work is traced onto a distant church spire in Auckland. Judi is passionate about the preservation of endangered NZ birds and donates a percentage of her sales to wildlife charities. Two works feature in the show: Still life with framed TinyArt artwork “Emerging” and “At What Cost Forever”.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Australia, 2 hours South of Sydney and am an Artist first and then a Photographer. But in saying that, the 2 have meshed very well together. I have been dabbling in art since I was around 10 years old. My passion was painting nature with acrylics and oils. I found Photoshop about 13 years ago and have been creating art through that medium ever since. I took up a course in animation in 2013 which had a basic Photography course included. I ended up falling in love with photography and hated animation, funny how things work. I also did a Graphic Design course and ran my own Graphic Design business for a while. But through photography, I have found a passion for bird photography and have been taking photos of them ever since. Bird photography is so very challenging. They very rarely sit still for you so you can take their photo, lol!, so you have to be prepared with your camera settings and be very quick with your reflexes. It’s a challenge on many levels. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? My initial Photo Artistry started way back in 2013. I created images from the scenes I saw within my meditations. Surprisingly, I found it really seemed to connect with so many people and ended up selling my images all around the world. This also led me to make a DVD with all my own art, music and writings. I also like to use my art to evoke emotions. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? Nature inspires me. There are days when I feel like I have no ideas and no inspiration, which I know so many others do as well. That’s when I grab my camera and go out into the bush. The trees and birds have always given me inspiration and help clear my head. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? Not really. Quite often I will have an idea in my head and when I start on it, it doesn’t always come through the way I originally “see” it. It slowly evolves into what it is meant to be all by itself. Although, I will only use photos I have taken myself, which is why I don’t have many artworks with people in it. What does your art mean to you? Art means “passion”, “beauty”, “nature” ... Art comes from the Heart and Soul, a place where we can tap into the well of Life. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? The only way it has changed me is knowing there are others that create Photo Artistry images as well. I always thought I was the only one who used this medium. I have made many new friends from this and it has helped me feel “a part” of something and allows me to connect with others with the same passions. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? No one in particular. There are many artists I love and all of them are an inspiration.

Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? With creating an Alphabet of Australian Birds Artwork, so far, I have made it available for sale as a large Photo Print along with using individual letters to make a personalised name. I would love to see this go further and to be shown in hospitals, schools, anywhere where it can help people connect with birds and nature. It will also be available as a Calendar and I hope to make it into a Flat Fold-out book one day. I enjoy making videos as well, so hopefully that will be a part of my repertoire in the near future. My ultimate goal is to have my own gallery, not sure if that will ever happen but I can still dream because ... really ... “The sky’s the limit”. Until then, I will continue with my photography and see where it takes me.

JULIE POWELL INTERVIEW Trish Hoskin Most of us would be aware of Julie and her amazing work from our Awake and Kaizen groups. Having met Julie twice via our Awake get togethers in Melbourne and Launceston, I have seen her work and artistic pursuits grow enormously, so thought everyone would find it interesting to hear from Julie how she has achieved that. So, I have asked Julie to answer some questions for us to give us an idea of how she started, what she did to get herself “out there”, what triggered her to really pursue her artistic goals. Julie, can you tell us a little about your background and how you came to be artistic? I come from a long line of painters and photographers, I have always dabbled in creative pursuits, drawing, painting and such. I guess when I fell back in love with photography I just extended that journey. I love the creative freedom photography gives me, that I never found in traditional painting. I can be as complex as I can imagine, but also enjoy simplicity of photography as well. You have been around Australia and overseas a fair bit since I have met you including weekend day trips around the place. Do these influence your work styles? It may sound strange but in general not really, I sometimes like to create art from images of our trips, but in general my travel photography is just that and pretty much just for me. I am an adventurer by nature and I love getting out and exploring, whether overseas or even in my own home town. We sometimes travel to capture a special location for a Conceptual Shoot or a Project, I have been very lucky and privileged to have had access to some fantastic locations. Sometimes our travel is like a scouting trip and I find a spot and think I should really do something here one day. I also love to capture images for making my own textures, it’s became a bit of an obsession on my latest trip, can’t wait to really get stuck into making those texture packs. I also love to visit gardens (other than my own) and capture the weird, wonderful, quirky and of course beautiful flowers.
I have seen some of your amazing photographic work – what cameras do you use to capture these images? Up until 18 months ago it was all Nikon, I had a D5300 and D7100, but the weight was affecting me physically, so I switched to a Sony a7ii mirrorless, I love it, small and lightweight. I have 28-70mm and 18-200mm lenses for travelling as well as a wide angle, but for most of my art, whether portraits, still life or conceptual I use a 50mm Prime or my 50mm Macro, the Macro has barely been off my camera since I got it back in October. Love it.

JULIE POWELL INTERVIEW (Cont ...) Within the last 12 months or so I have read and seen via various Social Media sites where you have set up your own home studio to shoot with and even hold training sessions. Can you tell us where that idea came from? I have transformed my garage into a studio for pretty much everything that I do, including running my smaller workshops. Sometimes it is just a few select invitee’s session with friends for fun and creativity, but that has grown into more structured classes. I adore being an educator, I used to run art classes years ago, I was so happy to get back into running workshops. At first I just ran a few get together with my camera group, but more and more I was asked to run some workshops, which I started about 3 years ago, mostly still life, macro, food and some product photography, as well as the occasional Portrait Workshop. I started branching out about 12 months ago and offering to a larger audience, I also sometimes used a larger studio offsite. I am currently looking at running some special workshops at unique boutique locations, and I am looking at the possibility of running a few workshops Interstate. Have you found it rewarding in both an artistic sense and monetary sense?

I find it extremely rewarding in an artistic sense, when I can help someone understand a photographic principle, help them get off auto, capture some amazing images. I find I have many of the same people coming again and again and their work improves after every session. I certainly don’t make a lot of money, I am mostly just covering costs, especially if there is a model and hair and makeup involved, that all costs money. I know I should probably charge more, like others in the industry do, but I like to make my workshops accessible to as many people as I can. Photography is a very expensive hobby. I am going to branch out a bit more this year and market to perhaps a wider audience. This is where the online self-paced classes come into it.
Would you recommend going down that path to other artists thinking of stepping out of their shells and can you hint on any “gotcha’s” they might need to think about? It is not an easy path, you can’t just hang a sign that says Photography Workshops now available or Graphic Artist (or Digital Artist) now in session and expect people to come. It is about offering value for money and offering a need in your area. It is also about getting your name out there and getting known. For most of my workshops within my Photography Groups I am known for my Still Life and Portraits, more so than my digital art. I have spent the last 12 months really trying to build my brand, my name and my followers. I have spent the last few months really making a big push in an effort to expand my online presence, it is a lot of hard work, but can be fun and still just as rewarding as in person workshops. My first foray into Still Life “My Creative Still Life Journey” was a 12 week group which started out with locals, all done online with a private Facebook group, spread to 5 different countries and is still going from an online portal, this covered the basics in Still Life photography, from Light, Focus, Styling and a few different genres. Lately I have watched with amazement the beautiful food photography you have been creating. What took you in that direction versus your model style work? I still work with my models, I just felt I needed a break and my Still Life is more mediation than hard work, my Conceptual Portraits, are very labour intensive and lots of hard work, I still will be doing my Conceptual Shoots, but they are more for myself for the fun of it, than anything else. I create when I am inspired and I did so much last year, I think I was suffering a little burn out. The Food Photography originally started as an extension to my Still Life course, I was talking to a friend about the idea of taking recipes from an old hand-written cook book, stuff that I used to make when my daughters were small and make a new modern cook book filled with beautiful images. A few in the class said that they would love to try something like that too ... so it began. I enjoy cooking (and eating), but I am not THAT great or that experimental, and often I just don’t have the time, but doing it as a class allowed me to make the time I needed to create. Sadly I lost my initial mission in there, had to stop, take stock and remember WHY I started this in the first place. I then took some time to step away and re analyse what I was doing, I am now back on track and full of inspiration. Some times, with so much amazing art and photography out there it can be easy to lose your own voice, but it is important to step back and remember your WHY ... your reason for doing what you are passionate about.

I have also seen you offer ranges of textures for Lightroom and Photoshop, how did that idea come about, and do you see yourself as pursuing that line further? My textures started as a means to an end, I have loads of textures from Awake, Kaizen and more, unfortunately more often than not they do not come with commercial license or it all gets muddy and confusing, so I started making my own. Possibly similar to many out there already, but by using my own I know I have created everything myself in my artwork, I also started including them in workshops and such, but I freely give full commercial licensing with mine. I do not see it as a big part of my business, more of an add-on. If you do a Still Life course or a Food Photography course, then there are packs I use in the videos which I make available. I sometimes have background images to match up with Online tutorials I have create that which people sometimes ask for as well. Where do you sell your products, and have you found any range or style more successful than others? I offer them from my website only, as I said not a major part of my business, sometimes I get all inspired and make a few different textures or overlays, then I package them up, they can be fun to make. My overlays and Natural Grungier textures seem to be more popular than say Lightroom Presets.
Any tips for some upcoming artists on the do’s and don’ts in trying to sell their work? Don’t lose sight of your WHY, I know this CAN and does happen, there are so many great photographers out there, try to find your unique voice and stick to it, if you create from a place of passion and love and be true to your own inner vision, other people will be attracted to you, they become your tribe, your followers. But it cannot all be take, take, take, you must give back to your community offering a need, a niche. Run a market survey to see what you followers are looking for, I surveyed 100 in the end, and was quite surprised at what I discovered. Bridestowe Revisited

STAGE 2 Redlands City is 30kms directly east of Brisbane, QLD, situated on Moreton Bay. The whole area is now called ‘Redlands Coast’ for tourism purposes as it embraces the bay, many island communities and with numerous kilometres of beautiful coastline - it is a very popular boating, swimming, surfing and tourism district in the state. Due to our location, we find we are frequently drawn to creating art works that have a water based theme - hence ‘The Water Nymph’. We hope you enjoy our collaborative efforts.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Busselton, Western Australia. I have been doing photography for over 25 years and I love exploring digital art as well. Life has thrown me some curve balls, the most recent of which was my Husband getting diagnosed with terminal cancer and then 4 days later our house being burnt to the ground. 3 months later my husband died. This was a time of great loss and yet I found my art a great help in showing what I was feeling on the inside while I had to keep living on the outside. It gave me a way to show others what I was going through and release it from myself as well. It was incredibly healing. Three years on and I have begun to fully embrace life again and see its beauty and love all around me. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I was a photo coach for Digital Photo Secrets and followed Sebastian Michaels’ work and loved what I saw, so signed up for Photoshop Artistry. I found it enabled me to combine my photography with my creative side to create new works of Art. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? My love of nature and wanting to bring it to those who may not live in such a stunning environment as I do. I also wanted to try to capture feelings and emotions and express them in art, both as expression for myself and to let others know they are not alone. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I take photos of everything!!! You never know when you are going to need that little detail in a piece of work. Then I usually start with a photographic image and think about the message I want to convey and go from there. Sometimes it is just the beauty of nature and the image speaks for itself and sometimes it might be to make a statement like my piece Urban Sprawl, that reminds us of what we could lose if we are not aware of it. What does your art mean to you? It is part of who I am, how I express myself and one of the ways I reach out to others. It has been an amazing vehicle for healing for myself and others. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Yes, it has given me a vehicle to express myself in a way that others can resonate with and hear me. It has enabled me to give something back. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? All the Kaizen members and Sebastian of course. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future ? What are your next steps? I would like to create oracle card decks using my images and have books published with my images in them. I already sell my art in Galleries, at my home Studio and online, so will continue to do that as well. I am an intuitive healer and oracle card reader and I also use Crystal point Therapy, so would like to do work around these things as well. Nature is a great healer and not everyone has the opportunity to go out and experience nature as I do, so I want to share it with them. I have work in a number of hospitals around the world, that has been placed there by the Healing Art Network.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION GRADIANT MAPS AND COLOURMAPX By Andrew Haysom The Gradient Map is one of my favourite Photoshop adjustment layers. It is one of the best ways to convert a colour image to black and white and is also a wonderful way to colour correct or colour grade an image and even to control the luminosity or tones in an image. A Gradient Map allows you to define a colour (or black and white) gradient and then this gradient is mapped to your image according to the luminosity (brightness levels) in the image. When you first create a Gradient Map adjustment layer it will use the current foreground and background colours to build the gradient (the foreground colour will be mapped to the shadows, the background colour to the highlights). Click the gradient in the adjustment layers Properties window and the Gradient Editor dialog will be shown (see Figure 1). The current gradient is shown in the Gradient Display about two-thirds of the way down the dialog, the colours that will map onto the darks/shadows at the left of the gradient, those that will map onto the lights/highlights on the right. Just below the Gradient Display you will see at least two small squares (with triangular caps) that are called Colour Stops. These define the colours that make up the gradient, and their position along the gradient display defines the transition from one colour to another. To change the colour of a colour stop, click the colour stop then click the Colour Swatch (or double-click the Colour Stop) and the Color Picker will be displayed. Choose the new colour and press OK.

To add a new Colour Stop click just under the Gradient Display where you would like to add the Colour Stop. To remove a Colour Stop click and drag it away from the Gradient Display, or click it to select it and press the Delete button.
Drag a Colour Stop left and right along the Gradient Display to change the colour transition along the gradient. When you have a Colour Stop selected you will also see a small diamond either side of it, these are the Colour Mid-points. These can also be dragged left and right to change the transition of the colours between the two Colour Stops. When a Colour Stop is selected it’s defined colour will show in the Colour Swatch and its position along the Gradient Display (expressed as a percentage) will be shown in the Percentage field. Any changes made in the dialog box will be reflected live in your image.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ...) You can click one of the defined Gradient Presets to select one of these. Figure 1 shows the presets that are installed as a Photoshop default. Clicking the small cog at the top of the Gradient Editor dialog shows the Gradient Editor Settings menu (see Figure 2).
The options in the bottom section of the menu allow you to add further gradient sets that come with Photoshop, in Figure 2 the “Photographic Toning” set has been added to the presets. A simple black to white gradient as shown in Figure 1 can be used for Black & White conversion, and then you can move the black and white Colour Stops to define your black and white points, and move the Colour Mid-point to darken and lighten the midtones. However you may like to create a few different gradients to give yourself more control. The gradient shown in Figure 3 is another Black & White gradient but this one has three intermediate Colour Stops at the 25%, 50% and 75% points on the gradient, giving more flexibility in adjusting the tonality of the image.

[Fig 3 – A 5 step Black and White Gradient] Using the same gradient as shown above, but with the Gradient Map adjustment layer set to Luminosity blend mode, is a great way to adjust the tonality of your image. Colour toning, correction or grading is done with a coloured gradient, and can be done with Normal blend mode or Colour Blend mode, or for some even more striking results try Soft Light, Overlay or Hard Light blend modes. Try gradients created with complementary colours for some lovely results (tone the shadows with blue and the highlights with a warm yellow for example). Don’t forget to play with the opacity of the Gradient Map layers, for colour toning you will often want much lower opacities (20-50% depending on the image and gradient). A gradient map can also be a good way to capture the “colour essence” of one image and overlay it onto another. Whilst it is possible to manually create the gradient from the target image, a wonderful little Photoshop plug-in I have recently discovered will do it for you much more easily. ColourMapX from Nino Batista Photo not only simplifies the creation of Gradient Map adjustment layers, but its key feature is that it allows you to easily “capture” the colours from an image and create a gradient from them. Figure 4 shows the ColourMapX panel, the second image shows the menu that is displayed when the ... (three dots) are clicked on either the Current Palette or one of the saved Palette presets. The third image shows the preferences sub menu that is displayed when the small cog at the bottom of the panel is clicked.

To extract the colours from an open document simply set the number of samples you want (this will become the number of Color Stops when you create a Gradient Map from it later), and press the Analyze button. The Current Palette will now show the extracted files. Applying these to another file is as simple as opening that file and making it active, then clicking the ... on the Current Palette and selecting Apply Color Grading. ColourMapX will create a Gradient Map adjustment layer with the Blend Mode and Opacity defined in the ColourMapX Preferences dialog (see Figure 4). Obviously once the Gradient Map layer is created you can adjust the Blend Mode and Opacity to your taste.

Figure 5 shows a couple of sample images and the ColourMapX extracted colour sets and the resultant gradients.

You can save extracted colour sets as presets in ColourMapX for use later. ColourMapX is a nice little panel, I am enjoying it a lot. It is available for a cost of USD$30 (approximately AUD$50) from the website below.

Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge 107
For the second year, join us on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy and creative/artistic photography is where my heart is and I hope to encourage more photographers to not just stop at taking gorgeous wildlife photos, but to take them further. These weekly challenges encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). I have created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Be warned - you will (hopefully!) be pushed outside your comfort zone, and you will likely need to do some Googling to learn more about new techniques, but that’s also the point. This is your challenge - do as much or as little as you want and in your own timeframe - it’s up to you to decide what works best for you. I do encourage you to take photos for the challenges, rather than digging through your archives. You can take photos in advance and “bank” them and you can do them out of order. All I ask is that you try to take the photos intentionally with the challenges in mind, rather than retrofitting an image to fit the theme. With an emphasis on storytelling and advocacy, I encourage you to post your images to social media (especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Flickr) and to your blog if you have one. Use hashtags to enable us to find and share your images. Challenge hashtags: #artofbirding, #artofbirding2019, #aob2019week1 through to #aob2019week52. Find the hashtags used by the conservation projects you are photographing, e.g. #sharemesealandia, #orokonui, so they can pick up and share your photos too. Use the hashtags commonly used for your critter: e.g., #kaka, #takahe, along with #conservation, #wildlife, and many more general terms. INTENTIONAL CAMERA MOVEMENT (CREATIVE) Week 41: 07 Oct 2019 Spin your camera round and round or up and down to get an image with intentional camera movement. Aim to do so in a way that adds to the subject you’re shooting (e.g., up and down movement to capture the majesty of a grove of tall trees). Advanced challenge: use the Path Blur filter in Photoshop to add movement in post-processing.
FOOD CHAIN (STORY) Week 42: 14 Oct 2019 Illustrate the concept of the food chain in a photograph. Advanced challenge: how many different lifeforms in the same food chain can you get in one photograph?
SELECTIVE BLUR (TECHNICAL) Week 43: 21 Oct 2019 If you have a lens baby or wide-aperture art lens, you will love this challenge! This technique is also easy if you have a tiny macro lens for your cellphone camera. If you don’t have any of these lenses, fear not, you might have to more carefully choose an appropriate subject but it’s still doable. Using a wide aperture, focus on only one small but important part of the subject, letting the rest fall off into blur. his technique works well for flowers: consider the form of the flower in question and see what first draws your eye - is it a curl of a petal, the curve of the stem, the pop of a stamen? Focus only on that. Think carefully about your composition and where that sweet spot of focus will fall. Hint: you can also use Photoshop or apps to selectively blur in post-processing. Advanced challenge: add a painterly texture.

It’s so easy these days to pray and spray, hoping to get the perfect shot while consigning yourself to an afternoon of deleting a thousand identical photos. STILL LIFE (CREATIVE) Week 49: 02 Dec 2019 Arrange a still life scene and photograph it compellingly. Try to tell a visual story that links each element - though it doesn’t have to be an obvious one. Don’t be satisfied with your first photo, try different angles and settings and explore the scene. Advanced challenge: include memento mori to represent the transience of life and feel free to use Photoshop compositing and photo-artistry techniques to turn your still life into a work of art. EXPOSURE BRACKETING (TECHNICAL) Week 50: 09 Dec 2019 Do you get frustrated with photos that are either overblown in the highlights or have no details in the shadows? Extend the dynamic range of your photos by exposure bracketing to take multiple photos with different exposures, then combining them in-camera (if your camera does that) or externally in Lightroom or Photoshop either manually or by using the inbuilt features. Most cameras will have an exposure bracketing setting that will automatically take the set of photos at each exposure value. A tripod will also come in handy. ON THE EDGE (STORY) Week 51: 16 Dec 2019 Find a region where two ecosystems overlap and meet the locals, e.g. the littoral zone at the beach, an estuary, wetlands ... PHOTO ESSAY (EVERYTHING) Week 52: 23 Dec 2019 This is when we bring it all together. Think of the skills you’ve developed this year and create a photo essay of 5-10 photos, related by theme or topic, and use it to advocate for something you care about. Feel free to use photos you’ve taken this year or take new ones. Aim for a consistent look-and-feel across the photoset, while ensuring each picture contributes uniquely to the story. How to present your essay? Possibilities include designing an Adobe Spark presentation, Instagram story, YouTube slideshow with sound track. Make sure to tell the world about your essay through social media posts etc. Advanced challenge: arrange to print and exhibit your photo essay. Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. My name is Marjorie Lord I create photo art with every day people. I live in Flaxton which is located on the beautiful Blackall Ranges of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? It was a natural progression from Fine arts. The camera has replaced the paint and Photoshop is my paintbrush. I love the mix of art, digital art and photography. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I am inspired to create from conceptual ideas and thoughts I have, then turning them into a visual narrative. I am a projectbased artist, that is I work on a theme, and when finished, I move on. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? Not really, I simply wait until an idea speaks to me, then I story board it out and work on how I am going to bring it to visual conception. What does your art mean to you? I think about art and being creative all day so I wouldn’t be much fun to live with if I did not have art in my life. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? No it hasn’t changed me. But I am inspired by the incredible talents of the people within, along with the Photo Artisty education website which is a fabulous source of help and inspiration. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? The everyday people I meet. There are so many amazing life stories and wonderful people in this world that I am always inspired by. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future ? What are your next steps? Oh that is hard to answer. Who knows? I ain to keep exploring ideas, themes, and correlating the images into exhibitions, books and so forth.

MELBOURNE GATHERING INCLUDING BROOKE SHADEN WORKSHOP By Ilona Abou-Zolof and Christina Brunton
Recently some of the members from Artists Down Under had a meet up in Melbourne. A number of us went to the Brooke Shaden Promoting Passion Tour 2019 on the Saturday which was excellent. Then on the Sunday many of us meet at the Butterfly House in the Melbourne Zoo. Saturday – Brooke Shaden – Promoting Passion Tour 2019 The Promoting Passion Tour 2019 was delivered to many places across the world. The workshop focused on jumpstarting our creative ambitions to live a passionate and artistic life. For Australia it was delivered in Melbourne this year. The Brooke Shaden workshop cost us a hefty $50 each as it was sponsored by Sony. Before the event started Brooke came out to meet everyone in the line, to talk to each one of us and to give us all a cuddle for coming to see her. She is such a sweetie. Brooke showed us how she creates, from the planning stage through to the final stage of the image. During the day there was a number of people modelling for us to take photos and even Brooke posed for us as well. I have added an image of Brooke with a set of keys. At the end of the day there was an ‘on the spot’ 5 minute challenge between a couple of the presenters (Brooke was one of them) where the audience came up with a subject and they had only 5 minutes to plan, create, take a series of photos and develop the final image in PhotoShop. What they produced in 5 minutes was mind blowing!!! The audience voted on the best. Guest speakers for the Melbourne Tour were: Joel McKerrow – Poet and speaker from Melbourne Karen Alsop – Story Art Education and HeartFelt – giving to children in hospital dealing with issues and disabilities. If you ever get the chance to go to one of Brooke’s conferences/workshops, we can certainly recommend you go. For us it was certainly $50 well worth spending and we expected to pay much more for this. Thanks Sony for sponsoring Brooke on her World-wide tour. We have included a photo that Brooke took of the group. Christina is wearing the red jacket in the middle of the group, Ilona is in the purple next to me. Many of the Artists Down Under are close by or right behind us.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research
When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
