EDITOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to our November edition of Artists Down Under and a special welcome to our newest members Bernice Fargus, John F. Kelly and Clyde Scorgie. This month our artists have exceeded themselves with their special achievements, exhibitions and awards, congratulations to all concerned. It was nice to see some of our ADU members have a recent catchup over lunch, and I was so privillidged to be one of them. It was great to be able to meet other members, have a laugh and toss around some new fun and creative ideas. One of my favourite monthly articles is the Photoshop tutorials that Andrew Haysom shares with us. This month he explains to us all about the Colour Lookup Tables . The Redlands Digital Artists Group have put together another of their fantastic Chinese Whispers images for everyone,. This month it has a completely different theme to what they usually put together, a very happy whimsical feel called “Within The Forest”. I hope you enjoy it.

Our four Featured Artists for the month are Louise Smith, Mary Knaggs, Bronwyn Kenmir and Ann Lavin. Their artwork is amazing, they have really outdone themselves, so I hope you enjoy their work. Judi Lapsley Miller shares with us how she put together her Tiny Art Project alongside fellow framer Chris Helliwell. It’s especially good to see that they are looking after the environment and helping wildlife organisations alongside the beautiful artwork and gifts that they offer.

Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch.

It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world. I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting.

Dean L Hohn My dream is to visit the Tarime District of Tanzania and spend time with the villagers and attempt to capture their stories and include them in my gallery. The Care For Africa Foundation, that I am raising funds for is based in Launceston, Tasmania. As a result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege.

Care for Africa Cont ...

WATER FROM ART As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research

My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images.

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like.

My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill.

PHOTOART WORKSHOP “Expression in Photoart Workshop, 10:30am - 6pm, Tuesday 20 November, at Women’s Centre for Health Matters in Canberra, http://www.wchm.org.au. Art can bring a fresh approach to communicating difficult experiences such as living with chronic illness. Art is creative and expressive. Art can explore ideas and feelings that are hidden or difficult to see. Art can say things that cannot be said with words. Margaret will discuss ideas, suggesting ways to image their ideas, enabling a visual language to describe the impact of chronic illness on their body and daily life. Featuring the birds, reptiles and flowers of Zealandia, this year’s exhibition shows you what our photographers and writers love most about the valley. Curated by photo-artist and volunteer Storyteller convener, Judi Lapsley Miller, this group exhibition features photography by Janice McKenna, Hayley May, Linton Miller, Brendon Doran, Lynn Freeman, Chris Gee, and Andrew Hawke with stories by Louise Slocombe, Vanya Bootham, Chris Gee, and Lynn Freeman. The volunteer Storyteller team produced the entire exhibition from concept through to framing.

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge

Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). She has created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry about catching up, just jump in at the current week. From amateurs with just a cellphone to professionals with the latest gear, the participants in the AoB photo challenge bring many and varied perspectives to the weekly challenges. The challenges are designed to develop skills for wildlife and nature advocacy through visual storytelling, creativity and learning new photographic techniques. Week 45: wabi sabi (creative) Wabi sabi is the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfection and age.

Week 46: teeny-tiny (technical) Dig out the macro lens and find something tiny to photograph! If you don’t have a macro lens, try your camera phone as most are good at focusing close-up. Or, alternatively, use a telephoto lens. In all cases, a tripod will come in handy.

Week 47: volunteering (story) In two week’s time it’s International Volunteer day, so this week’s challenge gives you a head start in finding a local volunteer project to highlight. Be sure to get permission from any people you include in your photographs before sharing online.

Week 48: bird’s eye view (technical) Change your viewpoint from a human level to a bird’s eye level or insect-eye level. Get up high, get down low and change your angle on the world. Mind your knees and mind your balance! Wildlife photographer Tui de Roy talks of the “road kill” shot, which is the typical human-eye level looking down on a critter. What a difference it makes to get down and shoot across instead!

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge Photographers’ Photos from Prior Weeks

This tīeke (North Island saddleback) at Zealandia Ecosanctuary was searching under dead dry leaves for a snack – and throwing them around to get at anything underneath – an illustration of how dead vegetation provides for both the tīeke and the invertebrates it is searching for. After declining rapidly once mammals were introduced, by the early 1900s tīeke were confined to a single population on Taranga (Hen Island) off the northeast coast of the North Island. Successful introductions to sanctuary locations started in 1964 and Zealandia’s population arrived in 2002.

I’m collaborating with framer Chris to upcycle our offcuts into tiny pieces of fine art. I make product labels and edit the website landing page. 7:30 AM Process photos from yesterday’s photoshoot at Zealandia EcoSanctuary. While Lightroom churns on an HDR landscape, I get distracted by clickbait on Facebook. 8:15 AM Do the art! The new Doctor Who series is inspiring me, and I have an idea for a picture featuring a gorgeous cheeky kākā who is undoubtedly also a Time Lord. Load Photoshop and get into it. Eventually, I get distracted by Facebook and email, but for a couple of hours, I was in the zone. 11:15 AM Prepare print files for a recent image and enter details into my inventory database. File and catalog the digital assets and load it into my online shop.

Package up orders and exhibition pictures for delivery. 3:30 PM Notice nice light on tulips so time for an impromptu photo shoot. Feel guilty. 6:00 PM Dinner. 7:00 PM Check in on Messenger with accountability partner Hannah on what we’ve been doing today and brainstorm some new ideas. All while watching funny parrot videos on YouTube. 8:00 PM Sign off for the evening. 9:00 PM Sneak back online to check Twitter. Resolve to deal with social media addiction. Check Facebook. 10:00 PM Bed. Brain churning with ideas for another project. Eventually, sleep. Spending all day in the studio? Not so much. The reality is that the day in the life of an Artist is only a little bit about doing art and a lot about being a small business owner, responsible for everything: creating art, promoting, shipping, marketing, exhibiting, building networks and community, accounting and administration. Fortunately, I love every aspect – except doing the taxes! Judi Lapsley Miller is a photo-artist, scientist, and wildlife conservation volunteer from Wellington, New Zealand. Through her art, she advocates for rare and endangered species and spaces and encourages others to do the same through a weekly photography challenge that has advocacy at its heart. Since taking the plunge to be a professional artist just over two years ago, she has had two solo exhibitions and participated in multiple group exhibitions in New Zealand, and in 2017 was awarded a Solo exhibition with the online Light-Space-Time Gallery. Mid October presented us with another wonderful opportunity to catch-up with some other ADU members. We are all students of Sebastian Michaels by way of participating in his various Photo Artistry courses. Marisa Liberato (a new ADU photo artist) joined Phillipa Frederiksen, Barbara Dudzinska and myself in saying farewell to Pam Henderson. Sadly, Pam is leaving Queensland to settle in a NSW country area. We will miss her, but, at the same time, wish her the best of luck in her new environment. For a few hours we laughed, exchanged ideas about our own endeavours and shared processes and thoughts about our collective creative future. We also talked about what motivates us, and how much fun, and happiness, we experience with our artistic endeavours. There are so many wonderful motivating aspects to leading the Photo Artistic Life and meeting with other people who share the same interests. A couple of months ago, a few of us caught up with Jacqueline Goss when she was visiting Queensland - at that time we decided to have a Tea Pot Challenge as the cafe we were in had an eclectic range of pots. This time we met in Plant Nursery Cafe and decided to have another collective challenge. Given where we were, we decided to do a Flower Challenge - we hope you enjoy our efforts as much as we enjoyed each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s company.

F I F T H AV E N U E I first became interested in photography about 7 or 8 years ago when we moved to a small town on the coast of South East Queensland. My job at the time enabled me to be out and about in the early mornings and late evenings, the perfect time for photo taking. I decided to join the local camera club where I met some really lovely people who helped me enormously on my photography journey. I had some small successes with club competitions over those years but felt a bit restricted with lots of rules and regulations attached to straight photo competitions. Towards the end of last year I came across an advertisement for the Photoshop Artistry Course, which I thought would be a further step towards with what I wanted to achieve with my art. So I signed up and before I had even finished the PA course I jumped into Awake at the beginning of this year. It has been a big learning curve for me as I didn’t do a lot of photo enhancements with photoshop, I always preferred Lightroom to do the basic edits. Although Photoshop can be extremely frustrating for me at times I really enjoy seeing my creations come to life. Sometimes it just all comes together brilliantly and other times its a struggle to make it work. I have tried a few of the styles showcased by Sebastian Michaels in the course, some have worked, others not so much. I like the scrapbook type of effect but for some reason I find I keep going for a more photo realistic approach. I’m not sure where this journey will take me in the future but for now I’m content to keep ploughing through the courses on offer and learn as much as I can and to keep creating!

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION COLOUR LOOKUP TABLES By Andrew Haysom

Color Lookup Tables are essentially colour arrays or matrices that are used to map the colours in a video or still image, to a different set of colours, to modify the look and feel of the image. They are a quick and easy way in Photoshop to modify the image, and I love using them at the end of my workflow for providing a great way to unify an image that contains multiple elements. They are often also referred to as LUTs (“look up tables”). Photoshop provides an adjustment layer called Color Lookup that allows you to easily incorporate modifications using Color Lookup tables in your workflow. The Properties panel for a Color Lookup adjustment layer is shown in Figure 1.

[Fig 1 – Color Lookup Properties Panel] You will notice there are three choices 3DLUT File, Abstract and Device Link. The majority of the Photoshop provided presets are found if you select the 3DLUT File option, but there are also some under Abstract. When you click either option you will see the drop-down menus shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.

Figure 2 Figure 3 Clicking the Load option that is the first option on both of these allows you to access color lookup tables that can be found on your hard disk. These could be ones you have saved yourself (more on that in a minute), or ones you have obtained from other sources. The available presets are then found below in the second section of the drop-down menu. Simply load one of your LUTs using the load option, or click one of the presets to see the effect of the color remapping on your image. Like all adjustment layers you can modify the effect using opacity, blend modes or blend-if. Make sure you try both Luminosity and Color blend modes with Color Lookup adjustment layers, which allow you to isolate either the brightness or color of the adjustments. In Photoshop CC 2014, Adobe added the capability to easily create and save your own Color Lookup tables. You can make changes to an image using any number of Photoshop Adjustment and Fill layers, then save the effect of these layers as a Color Lookup table. Proceed as follows; 1.

The base image must be set as a Background Layer. If it is not, select it then use the Layer / New / Background from Layer menu command to convert it into a Background Layer.

Make adjustments to the image using any number of adjustment layers.

You can use most of the adjustment layers effectively here as well as the Solid Color Fill layer to make adjustments to your image. You can use different Blend Modes on the adjustment layers, as well as using Opacity and the Blend If sliders to modify the effect. Do not use layer masking this can lead to unpredictable results. Only use adjustment layers, do not use other filters like Topaz or Nik, or use any other pixel-based layers.

When you have the result as you like it, you can save the combined effects of the adjustment layers in a Color Lookup table using the File / Export / Color Lookup Tables menu command.

You can enter a description, and a copyright statement (this will be captured within the LUT).

Ticking Use lowercase file extensions is a good idea to ensure compatibility across different systems if you intend to distribute the LUT. For Quality I recommend either Medium or High, but not Maximum (there are some known issues with large LUT tables which the Maximum option will create). I have never had any issues with using the CUBE format, so recommend choosing this.

Hit OK and you will be prompted for a filename to use to save the LUT. Do not change the file extension, Photoshop will take care of this.

Now you have saved the LUT, you can use it in other Photoshop images using the abovementioned Load option on the 3D LUT drop-down menu to apply the same adjustments to that image.

If you would like to have your saved LUT appear as a preset rather than having to load it each time you can copy the LUT file into the Presets\3DLUTs folder that you’ll find under the Photoshop folder on your hard disk. LUTs, when saved in standard formats can also be used in other software packages from Adobe and other manufacturers. You will find LUTs available at various places on the internet, one good source is the ON1 web site where you can find about 90 free LUTs in various categories at this URL.

If you are not already using the Color Lookup adjustment layer as an option in your workflow, have a play with it, I’m sure it will then become a regularly used feature.

I first picked up a camera while in high school (which is a very long time ago now). We had a fabulous teacher who taught us how to use a â&#x20AC;&#x153;realâ&#x20AC;? camera and also how to develop our negatives and print in a dark room. My love of photography was born then I think but then put on hold as life took over. I started to rekindle my interest about 10 years ago and treated myself to a new, whizz bang DSLR camera which I still use to this day. I love photography. I love everything about it - the thought of capturing a fleeting moment in time, the fact that you see things differently with a camera, and the way having a camera forces you to look at the world in a completely different way. Learning through the Photoshop Artistry and then Awake courses how to manipulate and enhance my photos was a really thrilling time for me. I love being able to take photos that for me tell a story. Being able to work on them to make them more artistic or interesting has been part of the fun! My favourite themes are street photography (catching people as they go about their day and seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary moment) and beach photography (the sea fascinates me as it changes from day to day and also hour to hour). I also have a soft spot for nature photography, especially macro work, as the tiny worlds not immediately visible to the naked eye hold an endless appeal.

FINAL STAGE We’ve gone in a very different direction this month and had a lot of fun with a whimsical theme. The signs of Spring are very obvious with beautiful blossoms and toad stools. Butterflies and bees are flitting around to the musical sounds of the forest. But the most important event is the Mouse Tea Party. Cheshire Cats are cheering them on whilst also looking for a free feed. The deer are gently grazing whilst King Mouse keeps a watchful eye on the Hot Chocolate as well as the biscuits and cheese. Pam Henderson started with the fun theme and then Gerard Whelan had the opportunity to add his ideas, followed by myself as I finished it. This was one of those occasions in Photo Artistry when it was hard to know when to stop.

”A good snapshot keeps a moment from running away.” - Eudora Welty, author and photographer. This is one of the reasons I am a photographer. I don’t keep a diary. My photographs are my diary. Looking through them, I remember where I was, who I was with, what I was doing and how I felt at that particular time. Before my switch to digital photography, I kept photo albums and they are amongst my most treasured possessions. Since then however, I have been fairly remiss in not keeping the album tradition going but it’s on my ‘to do’ list! Photography is the core of what I do but I also enjoy taking it further with photo artistry. Being able to create new images from my own (or other people’s) photos, textures and other elements is a way of broadening and enhancing what has proven to be a life-long love. THE TINY ART PROJECT By Judi Lapsley Miller

TinyArt is a collaborative art project between artist Judi Lapsley Miller and framer Chris Helliwell. We create archival fine art prints with bespoke professional framing, all from upcycled materials that would have entered the waste stream. Using printing and framing offcuts, we’ve created tiny works of art just for you. Every piece is unique and only the best materials are used to ensure your TinyArt lasts a lifetime. Archival fine art paper, moldings, museum glass, acid-free mat boards - all are expensive and are too good to throw away. Judi’s art is usually in square format, but printed on rectangular paper - she uses the bottoms to print tiny versions of her fine-art prints to the same standard as her larger prints. Chris hates to waste his high quality framing offcuts. Together they cooked up TinyArt to bring fine art into your home and to bring joy into your life. TinyArt makes a perfect gift for that special someone. We have done our very best to not use specially purchased materials in this project. The exception is for some of the framing hardware like the D-rings, hinging and framing tape, framing staples and points. The framing moldings, glass (Ultra Vue and Museum glass), mats, and backing boards are all new materials but are the offcuts that would typically go to waste. The decorative papers and embellishments come from Judi’s large stash of arts and craft supplies that she’s acquired over many years. Even the labeling is all handmade from decades of hoarded arts and craft supplies from three generations of Judi’s family. The packaging is recyclable acid-free tissue and cardboard and/or reused bubble-wrap and other foraged packaging. Our philosophy is to use what we already have and give it a new life with you. All made with love and the very best care. For most pictures, 10% of Judi’s proceeds are donated to wildlife conservation organizations. CHEQUERED

Creating artistically has always been a part of my life. When I left school I worked in the fashion industry and from there I started my own design business. It was so exciting working with all the different textures and colours, putting it all together and creating garments for people to wear. While running my own business I also dabbled in Mixed Media art. Having retired and downsized I needed a creative outlet which didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take up much space, so I joined Photoshop Artistry with shaky hands, not knowing what I was going to learn. Goodness! Sebastian was such an amazing teacher; he carried me through to the Kaizen group where I am still learning and enjoying my journey in digital art.
