Project Title: The towns of New Citizens
The architectural project outlines a method for the mutation of European Mediterranean coastal settlements following the influx of Middle Eastern and North African refugees and immigrants, without sentimentalism or aestheticization. The main objective of the design is to make migrants and refugees new citizens, i.e. visible and equal members of the societies of host areas, through the selective local re-design of urban space, following both top-down and bottom-up procedures. The proposal for Pozzallo includes: - reception, registration, support and first aid facilities; - facilities for short/medium term accommodation, orientation and training; - permanent housing for the new citizens, scattered all over the urban fabric; - a centrally located open-air market for the sale of items produced by the new citizens; - interventions in public buildings (library, kindergarten and workshops); - a cemetery and - a monument. The proposed architectural action is developed as a dynamic succession of five phases that recognizes heterogeneous conditions of living and invites new coming citizens to primarily relate to the place, and then to gradually join the host community as equal members. Phase A: Arrival Phase B: Introduction Phase C: Dissemination Phase D: Integration Phase E: Representation Architecture is used as the mean for both the materialization and the particularization of the process of integration of migrants and refugees to the point of their becoming the new citizens, of their host towns. Αrchitecture will make this process visible.

Re-branding the current identity of the city by establishing a new alternative birdwatching tourism center of ornithoparatirisis, as Messolonghi stands as a destination for migratory birds, worldwide. The idea is ought to re-establish the role of the Lagoon to the city as a natural element that shapes its identity, forms the landscape and but also as a financial element that regulates the economy. Concept: The architectural concept is based in reproducing the city grid, while develops the contradictory elements of the existing landscape. Vertical and horizontal proposed structures are transforming current landscape elements into an integrated landscape synthesis. The architectural proposal includes the development of an integrated architectural program that enhances the visitors to discover the unique physical environment: - A Bird - watching observatory network - Cycling routes - A structure of floating nesting platforms Bird - watching observatories contribute to the creation of vertical landmarks which form horizontal integrated paths through the landscape. Floating nesting platforms reproduce the element of city grid. Contradictory vertical elements operate as landmarks while horizontal landscape creates paths.
