01. MIXED USES URBAN COMPLEX Diploma Thesis || Fall 2019 || Grade 10/10 Architectural & Urban Desing Supervisor || Prof. Georgios A. Panetsos
The subject of this synthesis has been the development of an integrated proposal aimed at creating a new urban topography in Athens given a distinct metropolitan character. It is proposed a redesign of the existing transit area of high-density into an urban complex of central uses. The design proposal seeks to define an architectural proposal that releases horizontal spaces and creates a new urban typology consisting of vertical and city scale mixed uses landmarks that activate public open spaces. It seeks to restore the identity of the region and set a standard for redesigning city spaces that focus on open public spaces that incorporate visitors, while avoiding the disruption of the urban fabric.
The design raises a total built space of 57.000 sq.m. with an overall coverage rate of 38% and creates a new open public space, following Ilisos underwater flow, which is attributed to the citizens and forms the new public ground. The new mixed uses urban comlex incrorporates the design of six (6) buildings with thematic zones on food, play, sports, digital media, leisure and accommodation.

[Public Ground: The Urban Density] The basic concept of the design is the liberation of horizontal land, the preservation of urban density and the development of a liveable area. This medium-rise urban area with a high building footprint ratio is redesigned into a high-rise urban area with a low bulding footprint and public open spaces. The existing building volume of 57,500 square meters that currently covers 72% of the total area has been redeveloped in order to maintain the same build structure in the current land ratio, while the overall coverage rate has been diminished to 38% .

[New Public Ground: Landmarks]
The spread landmarks of the region in the analysed topography form the typological base for the new metropolitan character of the urban complex.
The design of high-rise urban landmarks aims to foster a visually cohesive and distinctive identity that reflects the core values of the area and also attracts new residences.

The urban grid is forming the outer boundaries, while the underwater flow of Ilissos river, shapes the inner boundaries and acts as a flow element of a pedestrian move that welcomes visitors to the new public space.
[New Public Ground: Landmarks] The scope of the proposal is to define current problems of the urbanisation of Athens Metropolitan area and to develop a proposal that potentially would resolve current issues. The development of the proposed mixed-use scheme aims to tackle the lack of public spaces, the high building footprint and the existence of a large number of old empty buildings in Athens Metropolitan area. It is intending to stimulate the neighboring areas, by introducing a typology of a mixed building scheme and to enrich the metropolitan vocabulary of Athens, by creating a vertically oriented design and an open public space of leisure and relaxation for the citizens. On the ground floor commercial uses are developed and a walkway that fuctions as public expansion space is formed between the commercial uses. Public open spaces act as invaluable places for social interaction and form a major source of outdoor recreational, leisure and sport activities for the public. Undeground parking spaces are designed in order toaccommodate visitors needs, but also serve local citizens of the area where the number of available spaces regularly exceeds their demand.

Schoina Contribution || Concept, plans, elevations of Villa Altissimo Art Gallery, restaurant, Guest rooms. Ext. visualisation || Guest rooms, pool bar. The landscape, on a quiet area outside Turin, is constantly changing through different seasons and days. The Hill is designed to be used as a shelter that allows artists to stay away from the hyper-con-nection, information bombardment and overstimulation that constantly affect them. The main objective of the design is to create a landscape with functional art spaces that adapt to the preserved historical villa spaces. Architecture serves as the mean for the introduction of artists into a contemporary way of living and art production which makes attainable the process of rehabilitation into comfort, in a smooth and viable way.
Geometry and order, solitude and collectivity reveal primitive expressions of art. The Art Gallery, the Wellness facilities (SPA, Pools, Relaxation areas) and the Guest Rooms (18 rooms) follow a solitary coexistence with the artwork, while the water forms paths that entice visitors along their way.

3. THE TOWN OF NEW CITIZENS Villard International Workshop || Spring 2014 Participation at 15th Venice Architectural Biennale Supervisor || Prof. Georgios A. Panetsos Team || E. Afentouli, J. Giannopoulos, D. Lampris, K. Marinaki, V. Mavrianos, S. Sofianou Contribution || Concept, topography plans, Islamic Cemetery. Migration flows have been quite pronounced, especially those towards Europe, from Middle- East and Northern Africa. The debate today on the refugee question, centres on an appeal to general principles. With soaring flows of migrants and refugees, the urban centers of Europe faced the phenomenon of the concentration of populations at a large scale that they are not in a postion to manage. Hence, handling those incoming populations has become an urgent need. The architectural project outlines a method for the mutation of European Mediterranean coastal settlements following the influx of Middle Eastern and North African refugees and immigrants, without sentimentalism or aestheticisation, allowing to apply both top-down and bottom-up procedures, as appropriate. The strategy calls for a gradual transition, focusing on a process rather than momentary moves, with respect at all levels. The main objective of the design is to make migrants and refugees new citizens; visible and equal members of the societies of host areas, through the selective local re-design of urban space. Their gradual transition is fulfilled by a dynamic succession of five phases, formulated as a corresponding spatial network within the urban fabric.
PHASES OF DESIGN PHASE A: ARRIVAL [Relate to the desination] Program: Reception, Registration, Support/ First Aid Facilities.
PHASE B: INTRODUCTION [Familiarisation with the host’s culture] Program: Short/Medium Term Accommodation, Social Spaces, Training Center/Workshops, Classrooms.
PHASE C: DISSEMINATION [Enter the social structure through productive labour. Achievement of civic equality] Program: Open-air Market/Sale of Items produced by the New Citizens.
PHASE D: INTEGRATION [Settle free across the city] Program: Interventions in Public Buildings: Library, Kindergarten & Workshops, New Housing & Common Spaces Across Urban Fabric.
PHASE E: REPRESENTATION [Disclose of all different identities within the existing community. Achievement of civic equality] Program: Worship Space, Islamic Cemetery, Monument & Open Public Space.
4. DEPARTURES Villard International Workshop|| Spring 2014 Participation at 15th Venice Architectural Biennale Supervisor: Prof. Georgios A. Panetsos Pozzallo city, a major port which creates the link between Sicily and Malta and the first Italian place that immigrants arrive after Lampedus, currently encounters severe problems from the arrival of a vast number immigrants. It is proposed an integrated phasing strategy for the induction of the New Citizens. The induction program at the 5th Phase of Representation is aiming at the disclosure of all different identities within the existing community. The obejctive is the achievement of civic equality. The aim of the project is to create a religious space in order to accommodate Islamic immigrants into their last residence and serve the increasing needs of the Muslim population of Pozzallo.

06. SUBURBAN IDENTITIES The aim of this project has been the design of an integrated program for attracting birdwatching tourism in Messolonghi city. A synthesis consisting of 3 types of birdwatching observatories, an interconnecting passage and many floating artificial platforms is intenting to activate the city and to raise awareness about the rich biodiversity. The floating artificial platforms serve as photographic hides for the visitors while the interconnecting paths facilitate the transportation of the visitors and citizens.
