Iabsolutely love what I do and being able to share with you all the great homes, places and people here in Memphis and the Mid South. The struggle is real, though, to write about the next month when we are still enjoying the month we are actually in. In December, in particular, I am trying to think of not only the new month of January but also a new year! It will be here soon and if you are reading this, we have already crossed over. I found a prayer the other day that I saved to read on the eve of 2025 and I would like to share it with you.

As we stand on the threshold of a new year, we come before you with hearts full of anticipation and gratitude. We thank you for the gift of life and for the journey that has brought us to this moment.

Lord, we acknowledge the highs and lows of the past year—the joys and sorrows, the victories and challenges. Through it all, your presence has been our constant source of strength and hope.

As we welcome this new year, we place it in your capable hands. We trust in your plan and purpose for our lives, knowing that your ways are higher than our ways, and your thoughts are higher than our thoughts.

We pray for your guidance in the coming year. Lead us in the paths of righteousness and wisdom. Help us to discern your will in all that we do and to walk in obedience to your Word.

Fill our hearts with hope, joy and peace. May your love and grace shine brightly in our lives and be a source of light in a world that often needs it.

Lord, grant us the courage to face the unknown with faith and trust. In times of uncertainty, remind us that you are our anchor, our refuge and our strength.

We thank you for the lessons and blessings of the past and look forward to the opportunities and adventures that the future holds. May we use our time, talents and resources to bring glory to your name and to be a blessing to others.

We welcome the new year with open hearts, renewed faith and the confidence that you will be with us every step of the way. Amen.

Thank you all so much for your continued support! I wish peace and happiness for all of you in this year and the years to come.

With Character and Purpose

Comparedto those

in most newer developments, houses in Chickasaw Gardens aren’t known for their massive amounts of square footage. What residents of the long-established East Memphis neighborhood love, however, is their homes’ charm and character.

While those qualities are appealing, they have to be paired with smart design to be practical for the way families live today. Especially families with three active teenage boys, like the Alexanders. In the 13 years since Melanie and John moved into their home they have completed two major renovations on it to adapt it to their particular needs. The first project included a kitchen update, along with the

addition of a garage with two bedrooms and a bath above it to accommodate their growing family. The most recent came to be as the couple decided to make the house their forever home and go “all in” on having everything just the way they wanted it.

What they initially thought they wanted, however, is not what they ended up with. Brad McMillin of Advanced Home Designs urged the Alexanders to modify their plan to blow out the back of the house to create a new primary suite, taking up at least half of the back yard. “Brad noticed a lot of unused space, including a 30-foot-long by six-foot-wide hallway. He said, ‘Let’s reuse that space.’ [His plan] allowed us to keep our backyard, which has been so great,” says Melanie.

Price

Hays Construction took care of the remodeling work, but the Alexanders also wanted to freshen up their home’s look and feel. They called on Ann Prince, owner of Ann Prince Interiors, to guide that process. More than an experienced professional, Prince is a neighbor. She loves and understands the unique characteristics of Chickasaw Gardens houses and has an underlying respect for each home’s history.

Prince was immediately on board with McMillin’s suggestion. “I loved his ‘use-what-you’ve-got-and-make-every-roompurposeful’ philosophy,” she says. She concurred by creating a new purpose for the home’s front room. Recalls Melanie, “We have a family room and a keeping room. We didn’t need another place to sit around. We wanted it to be intentional.” Prince’s design centered on keeping the existing piano in the room, adding built-in bookcases and a cozy settee to create a music/reading room. The designer took advantage of the fact that the fireplace wall had to be redone to create a doorway, revamping its configuration to delete a box for wood storage and adding a clever hidden closet, all clothed in tasteful millwork. The new configuration looks right at home, as though it could have been part of the house’s original 1940 plan. New sconces reflect the silver and golden tones of the painting above the mantel, a Kurt Meer sourced from Goetze Art and Design.

“One of the things I recognized right away was that Melanie likes color. So we were never afraid of it,” Prince says. That emboldened the designer to choose a coral-toned wallpaper for the entryway that segues directly into the front room, where she opted for soft yet saturated aqua in high gloss on the walls and trim. That color repeats on the dining room woodwork, pulled from a hue in the printed grasscloth wallpaper. “I feel like grasscloth adds automatic texture that makes it feel almost architectural—another interesting element in a room,” she adds.

The existing chandelier plays to the room’s elegant ambiance, hanging above the family’s antique dining table and chairs. The designer was pleased to use pieces that were already in place and the owner is thrilled with the room’s new look. Says Melanie, “We love being in here. We use this room a lot.”

Prince

selected another botanical pattern for the walls in the newly renovated primary bedroom, this one with crisp white vines and leaves on a serene blue background. It starts in a small vestibule outside the bedroom, providing a perfect backdrop for an original Beth Edwards piece from David Lusk Gallery. “I love a moment when you walk into a master bedroom, especially when it’s right off the living spaces. It’s just nice to have a break before you walk in,” says Prince. Enlarged slightly during the latest revamp, the bedroom has a cozy but not cramped feel thanks to its charming fireplace and simple color palette.

The primary bath received a total makeover, going from the tiny layout prevalent in older homes to roomy and sophisticated. Complete with an oval soaking tub, a large shower and separate closets, his-and-hers vanities and a makeup table with a cute skirted stool, the bath boasts features usually found only in newer homes. Designwise, Prince used a stunning marble mosaic tile flooring as her jumping off point. Soft blue walls and relaxed Roman shades on the windows speak to the bedroom decor without being identical.

Thefamily room’s unusual configuration is due to its history. “My understanding is that this, many decades ago, used to be a porch,” says Melanie, explaining the room’s pitched ceiling crowned by a skylight. She admits, “This room drove me crazy, because there was a door on every wall. Ann said, ‘This is going to be your favorite room in the house.’ I thought there was no way, but it really is. This is where we mostly are.” McMillan’s plan involved moving one of those pesky doors and introducing a beautiful bay window. Prince’s idea of painting the ceiling a sunny yellow made a world of difference in the room. “I knew it had to be yellow from the very beginning. I don’t even think we looked at a different color for the ceiling,” Prince says. “As opposed to painting the walls yellow, I think it’s more interesting. Unexpected, for sure.”

Unexpected is somewhat of a theme, as Prince placed feminine features throughout the decor of this home to so many male family members. From a pair of pink glass lamps in the den to a flower chandelier and a bit of floral upholstery in the keeping room to a monogrammed bolster on the owners’ bed, she added nods to Melanie. They illustrate the fact that thoughtful design is composed of elements that are cohesive without being the same.

It’s this type of thoughtful consideration from both the architectural and interior designers that makes this house an ideal blend of long-established and up-to-date in which every square foot is useful, used daily and loved by the family that is committed to staying here for the long haul.

Edited and Refreshed

STORY BY TERRI GLAZER | DESIGN BY CATHY HARRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROSS GROUP CREATIVE

This Germantown homeowner says she couldn’t be happier with the newly completed updates to her home of almost 25 years and she credits the expertise of a professional for the project’s success. “Left to my own devices, I make a lot of mistakes,” she admits, but with guidance from designer Catherine Harris, she now loves her edited and refreshed home. Its new clean, yet classic, ambiance flows from one space to the next.

“She has such a well-trained eye and a gift for combining antiques with newer pieces to create uniquely beautiful rooms,” she says of the owner of Catherine Harris Interiors and Antiques.

The project began when the homeowner decided it was time to reupholster a pair of chairs in her living room. Since she had purchased several pieces from Harris’s shop over the years and loved her style, she reached out for help choosing a new fabric. On her consultation visit the designer asked if her client might want to broaden the scope. Harris recalls, “She had what I call the ‘Colefax and Fowler look’ with layers on layers.”

The client and her husband agreed and the ball was rolling. First on the agenda was a major home edit. “We took so much weight out of this house! As we lifted up and refreshed and got rid of, it’s been such a mood booster,” the homeowner says.

Heavy silk drapes in the living room and dining room came down to make way for simpler panels that still provide privacy, but allow filtered light to flood in. Harris explains, “That’s the key. Everyone wants a well-edited look, a clean look, balance and color, but the light is so important!”

Harris suggested trading the red, yellow and green palette for rich neutrals. “At the time, [design was trending toward] a lot of white and gray, and that never appealed to me,” says the homeowner. “Cathy suggested color not on the walls like it had been, but on fabrics and wallpapers. It was so helpful to me to work with somebody who allowed me to make some choices. Every option she presented was a can’t-fail!”

In the dining room, Harris replaced a beige and red wallpaper with a fresh, new style that has a timeless feel. The botanical and bird pattern has an almost luminescent quality that blends perfectly with the family’s treasured dining furniture, as well as the antique French chandelier Harris added. Says the designer, “I just loved adding the crystal to this look. I think people should not ignore the fact that things still need to be classic. This is a great classic look, adding the crystal to the pieces we used that she had.

“The nice thing about crystal, too, is you can add or subtract. That chandelier is perfect for this room, but sometimes we’ll get one in and start taking crystal off. You can customize the amount and make it work for the room.”

Harris further lightened the feel of the dining room by editing out a rug. Removing a layer of floor covering contributed to a cleaner look and allowed the beauty of the room’s hardwood floors to shine.

The homeowner says guests are amazed by the transformation of her kitchen and keeping room, especially given the fact that Harris talked her out of opting for all new cabinets and countertops. “So many people have old granite and old tile, but you can update it without making a lateral move, because all the marble will go out eventually, too. You can update it and give it a softer look…Treat it like a neutral if you can’t afford or don’t want to go through changing out granite.”

DESIGN

The adjacent keeping room is light and natural. Harris had the brick fireplace limewashed to work with the soft white she chose for the walls and trim. Greens in the accent paint and upholstery blend with a neutral sofa, rug, custom end tables and antique terracotta jar lamps to create an inviting and comfortable space for the couple. The informal dining area received a major makeover, starting with new iron doors that lead to the patio. Drapes in a soft swirl pattern soften the iron and add interest, repeating the curves of the antique chandelier Harris selected to hang over the oval French dining table.

Noting that Harris is “a great problem solver,” the homeowner explains how she reworked the primary bedroom, keeping beloved pieces and adding or refreshing only as needed. “The drapes were still in great shape and I love them. We keep them open now with new blinds that filter light in. Cathy lightened up the carpet and the walls with a paint color called Hush. I thought that sounded perfect for a bedroom!”

Harris raised the headboard, a trick of the trade she uses often to update the look in bedrooms. New upholstery on the headboard, new bedding, ottomans and lamps mingle with existing pieces and family heirlooms. The chandelier that formerly hung in the dining room, repainted by Harris’s team, looks right at home in its new spot. “All of a sudden, I love [the bedroom] again. And I didn’t have to abandon everything,” says the owner. “There’s still familiar. There are still things that I love, but it’s all fresh.”

The homeowner, a recent retiree and new grandmother, says she’s looking forward to enjoying her refreshed surroundings, thanks to her expert designer, who has now become a friend. “Cathy was a big help to me to get my house ready for the next chapter. Our home feels and functions perfectly for our family!”

The Power of Reflection: Looking Back Can Move You Forward

As the new year begins, many people feel energized by the promise of fresh starts and new opportunities. Before charging ahead it’s wise to take a moment to reflect on the past 12 months. Looking back thoughtfully allows us to celebrate victories, acknowledge challenges and recognize the lessons learned. Reflection helps us move forward with intention and clarity about who we are, what we value and what we want.

REFLECTION IS ESSENTIAL FOR GROWTH

Reflection is more than a glance backward; it provides insight and can lead to gratitude that cultivates growth. By reviewing past experiences, we learn to understand the “why” behind our responses and actions. We discover personal patterns and strengths that might otherwise remain hidden. Through reflection, we gain understanding of what brings us fulfillment and what may be holding us back, empowering us to step into the new year with wisdom and renewed confidence.

Taking time to pause in consideration allows us to let go of regrets, celebrate progress and release burdens we don’t want to carry forward. Reflection frees us to move from living reactively to living with intention. The best way to practice reflection is from the position of a witness, with curiosity. As you recall events of the past year, remind yourself you have moved past and through them. What you have now is a culmination of the residual effects of those experiences.

Below are some prompts and exercises to guide you in discovering with curiosity the moments of the year that brought you comfort and challenge so that you may begin setting your sights on what’s most important to you in the year ahead.

PROMPTS FOR REFLECTING ON THE PAST YEAR

Journaling is a powerful way to guide your reflection. Set aside some quiet time, grab a notebook and explore these prompts:

1. What were my most memorable moments of the year?

Consider your personal “highlight reel” of 2024. What filled you with joy, pride or gratitude? What nurtured your mind, body and soul? Revisit memories, contemplating each one, and let yourself feel appreciation for the experiences and the gifts they brought.

2. What challenges did I face, and how did I grow through them?

Reflect on the obstacles you encountered and what they taught you. What was most challenging for you? Did you learn resilience, patience or flexibility? Did God, friends or family help you get through the challenges? Take note of the strengths you developed as a result. Acknowledging your growth can foster a sense of accomplishment, even in difficult times.

3. Who impacted my year the most, and how?

Think about the relationships that shaped your year, both positively and negatively. Who inspired, supported or challenged you? What did that teach you about the qualities you value in relationships?

MA, LPC-MHSP (TEMP), NCC, 200 HR E-RTY, 500 HR RYT

4. What habits, beliefs or attitudes helped me this year?

Identify the habits or mindsets that served you well and allowed you to grow. Perhaps practicing gratitude, mindfulness or setting boundaries made a positive difference. Recognizing these practices helps you carry them forward as tools for the new year.

5. What am I ready to let go of?

Sometimes we hold onto habits, beliefs or relationships that no longer align with who we are becoming. Consider what you’re ready to release. Visualize letting self-doubt, perfectionism or lingering resentment go to create space for new possibilities.

EXERCISES TO RELEASE AND RESET

As you reflect, it’s also important to release the burdens that hold you back and set intentions for moving forward. Here are a few exercises to support this process:

1. Write a “release and keep” list.

On one side of a page, write down things you’re ready to let go of—attitudes, behaviors or emotions that no longer align with your goals.

On the other side, list the qualities, habits and mindsets you want to carry forward.

2. Compose a gratitude letter to yourself.

Write yourself a letter expressing gratitude for your growth over the past year. Thank yourself for overcoming challenges, making difficult choices and being open to learning. Expressing such appreciation cultivates self-compassion and reminds you of your strengths.

3. Create a vision board or intentions collage.

Reflecting on your answers to the above prompts, create a vision board or collage representing the year you’d like to manifest. Use images, words or symbols that inspire you, representing the qualities, goals and experiences you want to invite into your life. This visual tool can motivate you throughout the year.

SETTING INTENTIONS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD

Now it’s time to set intentions. Unlike rigid resolutions, intentions are flexible and compassionate—they’re about direction rather than specific outcomes. Here are a few prompts to help you set intentional goals:

1. What feeling do I want to cultivate this year?

Think about how you want to feel—peaceful, empowered, joyful, confident? Setting a guiding feeling can influence choices and help you recognize what aligns with your wellbeing.

2. What personal value do I want to prioritize?

Identify a core value that you want to develop such as kindness, courage or growth. Focusing on a value keeps goals connected to what truly matters.

3. What is one small habit I can adopt to support my well-being?

Start with a habit that feels manageable and meaningful. This could be practicing gratitude each morning, setting aside time for exercise, or spending a few minutes in reflection each evening. Small, consistent actions lead to lasting change.

MOVING FORWARD WITH CLARITY AND CONFIDENCE

The power of reflection lies in the clarity it provides. When we take time to understand where we’ve been, we can better appreciate where we are and approach the future with open hearts and grounded minds. As you embark on this new year, remember that growth is a journey, not a destination. By looking back with gratitude and forward with intention, you’ll carry the wisdom of your experiences into a year of meaningful, fulfilling possibilities.

Here’s to a year of purpose, presence and progress—one thoughtful step at a time.

Roasted Vegetable &QuicheGruyere

ROASTED VEGETABLE AND GRUYERE QUICHE

A warm breakfast is always welcome on cold, dreary days and January in the Mid South usually seems to have plenty of those! The holidays are behind us and it’s time to opt for healthier food choices. In this recipe the eggs provide plenty of protein, so the usual fatty breakfast meats aren’t even missed. Plus, it’s a good way to get your veggies in! Roasting the vegetables before using them in the quiche means a little more effort, but it is well worth it as the process really brings out all the sweetness and flavors.

I prefer to use a deep quiche pan with a removable bottom, which you can have in just one day, thanks to Amazon, but a pretty pie dish works just as well. You might need to adjust the eggs and cream, as this recipe is for an 11-inch diameter, two-inch deep pan.

TO MAKE:

Start with store-bought pie crusts. They come two to a box. I combine them and roll it out to fit my larger pan. Bake the formed crust in the pan at 375˚ for 15 minutes until the bottom is set a bit.

Toss your choice of sliced vegetables in olive oil and a couple teaspoons of Cavender’s Greek Seasoning, then roast until tender. I use yellow and zucchini squash, sliced baby portobellos, carrots and asparagus. You will need about two cups of the roasted vegetables.

Add the roasted vegetables to the baked pie shell.

Then mix the following together well and pour of top of the roasted vegetables:

6 eggs

2 cups cream

2 cups shredded gruyere cheese

Pinch of salt and pepper

2 tsp. of Cavender’s Greek Seasoning

Bake at 350˚ for 40-45 minutes or until the center is set.

EMPTY BOWLS LUNCHEON

BENEFITTING THE OXFORD FOOD PANTRY

There’s nothing more satisfying on a chilly winter day than a steamy bowl of soup. Some soup provides an extra benefit, though. Not only does it warm the person who enjoys it, it also helps feed others in need. That kind of soup will be served at the Empty Bowls Luncheon on Feb. 20 at the Oxford Conference Center.

For a $25 donation to the Oxford Food Pantry, guests will receive a beautiful handcrafted bowl filled with their choice of soup from one of over two dozen participating local restaurants. Bread, dessert from Nothing Bundt Cakes and beverages from Milo’s are also included.

The Food Pantry serves over 700 families every week and is run solely by volunteers. Located at 713 Molly Barr Rd. in Oxford, the pantry is open 50 weeks a year on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

A perennial favorite event in Oxford, the luncheon has been the largest annual fundraiser for the food

pantry since its inception in 2004. After a hiatus during the pandemic, organizers resumed Empty Bowls last year. “We served over 800 guests and raised about $3,000 for the Food Pantry, which was an all-time record. We’re hoping to surpass that this year,” says Monte Ochs, who chairs the event along with Dorothy Laurenzo.

Potters from north Mississippi, the Mid South, the Delta and beyond are expected to donate about 1,100 handmade soup bowls. The art department from Oxford High School also participates in the effort. Last year the students created about 75 of the bowls participants take home to keep. “They were really nicely done. Anybody would be proud to have any of these bowls on their dining room table,” says Ochs.

Just as the bowls run the gamut of styles, shapes and colors, so do the soup offerings. Restaurants from fast casual to fine dining provide a huge array of soups and chilis from which patrons can choose. Drive-through service will be available for pre-orders for groups of six or more. For more information on how to place an order text 662.832.4539 beginning Feb. 1. To-go service for smaller orders will be provided inside the Conference Center.
