THE LAKE HOUSE ULOS WEAVING CENTER

BAKERY INTERIOR DENAI HOUSE BOOKSTORE COFFEESHOP

The Lake House studio 1, 2016 mentor: Chichi Asda Artha, ST, MT

This project was assigned in studio 1, 2016 and was the first assingment to design a building. The purpose of this project is to create a place of tranquil and healing. This project is about dealing with a site that located on the edge of a lake and surrounded by hills, and the aim is how to use this location as a strenght to the design

Nowadays people start to make more buildings that looked ‘more modern’ and uniformed, and left behind traditional buildings. Located in Samosir, this project took inspiration from Batak’s traditional house (Rumah Bolon) which a few of them still can be found in Samosir, as a form of respect to the local architecture.

the house have an orientation that made the mountain and lake as axis, as it have sacred value to Batak people.

openings are on the front and back of the house, which was strategic for sunlight, and the view.

open plan so the room looks spacious and connected.

ZONING the zoning is split into two categories, semi-public & service on the ground floor, and on the second floor theres only the bedroom, which makes the main activity in the ground floor. Openings are only made on the front and back of the house which orientated to the lake and mountain.

Ulos Weaving Center in Tarutung final project, 2019 mentor: Ir., Morida Siagian, MURP, PhD

This final project is about cultural tourism destination with Ulos as the basis of the design. It is a recreational place that can accommodate the creativity of the local community and value art. It is also a place for tourists to learn the process of weaving Ulos. Tourism development introduces tourists with local culture and development that involves empowerment and development by maintaining local wisdom and raising the people’s socio-economic level in Tarutung

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Indonesia because it is one of the fastest-growing sectors, tourism is a type of industry that can quickly boost the economy and make new employment and stimulate other sectors. With this much potential, tourism development must be made and planned carefully, one of them is by including local elements. Ulos is a well known cultural heritage, but as technology advances, the production of traditionally weaved Ulos began to be left behind, when in fact, the traditionally weaved Ulos held a very high artistic value and in need of preservation. Tarutung is an area with the potential to be developed as a tourist city with a variety of nature and culture, such as the Ulos craft, which is a valuable asset. Every year the Festival Tenun Nusantara is held in Tarutung that can support the design of the Ulos weaving center, and yet there isn’t a proper facility that accomodate Ulos as a whole. That is why an Ulos center is needed. This design is using the neo vernacular architecture theme approach by incorporating local wisdom and natural surroundings of the site, a paddy field that becomes an innovative attraction. Therefore, Ulos weaving center allows people to get to know Ulos deeply in a whole new experience and a place suitable to enrich and conserve cultural tradition in Tarutung.

surroundings

the site can be reach within five minutes from Tarutung city, it’s also near other tourist destination. Surrounded with great scenery, on the east view we can se Bukit Barisan.

the site is originally a paddy field. The main concept of the design to combine nature and culture. so, the paddy fields are maintained, making it one of the selling point.

mass is split in to two, one for display and museum, and one for other activities; meetings, shows, office and food court

the two mass is connected by a bridge. the museum mass is taking inspiration from rumah bolon’s roof. the bridge and the other mass is using ulos pattern as the design.

the mass is elevated, to give space below the mass for the paddy field. there’s a different elevation for every mass. The Ulos philosophy for the Batak people inspires the hierarchy concept. Batak people are always given Ulos during their lifetime; birth-life-death. The front segment-birth, visitors will be taken up to the main building and will be shown the whole scenery. Towards the center, the winding road symbolizes life, which brings visitors to the final building where they will be shown a beautiful view at the end of thejourney that symbolizes as if they were looking into heaven; death.

a pathway was added below the mass that also using ulos pattern

Denai House on construction 2021, Medan

This house is located in Jl. Bangun Sari 2, Denai, Medan. The client is a family of five that wanted a new home that is safe, comfortable and can accomodate big family events. The site is 440m2 and the house ground is taking only 30% from the site, leaving a big yard that can be used as an outdoor-gathering space. Designed with classic-modern style, this house stand tall with two big classical collumn on its facade. Since the client is very family-oriented, family-related spaces like living room, kitchen-dining room are designed quite spacious.

bookshop’s cafe 2020, Medan. This small cafe is an additional function of a bookstore in Medan, has an outdoor concept. The client asked for a coffee shop that more online-based, with pick-up-n-go concept, and with a limited budget. The design of this cafe is dominated with raw materials and neutral colors.

Located in a strategic place, the site is only minutes away from Medan’s downtown. The site is also surrounded by offices (yellow) and some recreational area.

as the concept of this cafe is online based, but still allowing costumers to drink on-site. the zoning of this cafe are split into two. indoor for staff, and outdoor for customer. The staff area space was built on an existing musholla of the bookshop, taking 3,50m from 14m.

the outdoor area is given a canopy for shading

bookshop the outdoor area is divided into three parts. one is seating that faced the bookshop, a walkway to the bar, and another seating area

using paranet as cover for the canopy, and ketapang kencana tree as extra shading

the staff area can be closed with a rolling door, so when it’s time to close the shop, the staff can close the shop even if theres still customer (overstayed, which is a common problem for small cafes)
