KEEPING IT CLEAN In the four decades since the publication of “The Whole Natural Art of Protection,” Doug Robinson’s seminal introduction to Clean Climbing in the 1972 Chouinard Equipment catalog, we’ve seen a vast progression in performance, driven by improvements in equipment, technique, training and communication. A tremendous expansion in the number of people climbing, skiing and hiking worldwide has also led us to a deeper understanding of the damage that can be done when a Clean ethos is not followed.

At Black Diamond, we’ve sought to stay true to Clean Climbing’s original tenets, using them to inform our every step as we’ve evolved and expanded from mountaineering into a holistic, multifaceted view of alpinism that embraces climbing and skiing.

For us, the concept of Clean has been an ethical and aesthetic anchor since our founding. Today, Black Diamond’s ability to craft strong, simple, innovative equipment for alpinists stems from a few strongly held beliefs: We are alive in the mountains. Our focus has been, is, and always will be on these sublime spaces, the pursuits that take place there, and the lives that revolve around them. We are relentless in our stewardship of the environments in which we live and play. We embrace the paradox that is at the core of alpine pursuits. We are bold yet calculated, powered by passion as well as reason. We have a respect and reverence for risk. The need for control in situations of tremendous consequence is ever-present at each step in our process.

Our fit is best described as lean and athletic. Streamlined and efficient, each product is patterned and fitted for movement in the vertical environment.

We work with metal every day. These custom zipper pulls take cues from the industrial design of our own hardgoods. Made of anodized aluminum.

Form-ﬁtting, fully articulated hoods are built around the need to work well with or without a helmet.

We make a chest pocket standard on nearly all of our jackets. They’re easy to access and out of the way of pack straps and harnesses.

Despite our best efforts to unplug, technology doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Rather than ﬁght it, we decided to give it a good place to live.

An evolution in form, our cuff tabs feature a unique three-part construction that optimizes texture, suppleness, and holding power.

APPAREL DESIGN PRINCIPLES We are both toolmakers and users of tools. The equipment we create can’t be aesthetically or functionally distanced from this fact. As it has for decades, our design ethos demands that a Black Diamond product work with inseparable efficiency and purposefulness. We approach the Black Diamond apparel line with the same ethos and process: define the intended use, identify materials that suit the task, design with functionality first, then use, refine, and reduce until the cleanest, strongest, most effective solution remains.
