Dear Fellow Atlantans: I am proud to present the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation 2013 Fall Guide. Ensuring Atlanta’s youth have quality educational, recreational, and developmental opportunities is critical to the future prosperity and growth of our city. In August 2011, we launched the Centers of Hope program pilot initiative at Adamsville and Thomasville recreation centers in partnership with the Metro Atlanta YMCA and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. To date, more than 300 youth participants are enrolled in the two pilot programs, and enrollment continues to grow with community support. This fall, I am pleased to announce that my administration will expand the Centers of Hope pilot initiative to two additional locations: Ben Hill and Pittman recreation centers. My administration will also consolidate after school programming at an additional six locations, providing more robust and engaging programming for our children. Through publicprivate partnerships, the Centers of Hope will continue to provide safe, structured learning environments at the City’s recreation centers during after school hours. Serving more than 900 children a week, our Centers of Hope allow children to cultivate their academic and technology skills, and engage in robust physical fitness activities. Each city recreation center that has a Centers of Hope program will continue to serve the community at-large with: • Community programs including financial literacy workshops and tax assistance; • Access to facility use including weight rooms, pools and computer labs; • Reservations and rentals for events; • Meeting space for City of Atlanta approved neighborhood groups and much more. On behalf of the City of Atlanta, enjoy all the recreational and developmental opportunities offered throughout the fall.
Sincerely, Kasim Reed

Greetings, I am proud to present you with the fourth edition of the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation’s seasonal program guide. From the very first issue – winter 2012 – the Department set out to use this as a platform to promote its enriching programs and activities, and share the work that the City is doing to enhance and improve our facilities and better serve our youth, residents and visitors. When Mayor Reed ran for Office, he made a pledge to re-open every recreation center in the City of Atlanta. Within the first year of his administration, Mayor Reed re-opened all 33 recreation centers with a substantial investment from the City of Atlanta, the Atlanta City Council and the corporate community. However, Mayor Reed’s commitment to our youth and the Atlanta community did not stop there. He made a vow to go further and truly transform these centers into safe havens of learning, activity and character development for Atlanta’s youth. In 2011, he launched the new “Centers of Hope” initiative with a pilot program at Thomasville and Adamsville recreation centers by partnering with the Metro Atlanta YMCA and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. Over the last two years, we have seen tremendous success with the Centers of Hope initiative. When the pilot program first started, on a typical day, Thomasville Recreation Center would attract less than 10 kids per day. Today, we are seeing more than 100 kids on any given day at Thomasville taking computer classes, learning a new skill, learning about different colleges and universities and engaging in the type of activities that keep them on the right path. As Mayor Reed just mentioned in his letter, this fall, we are expanding the Centers of Hope pilot program to two additional centers: Ben Hill and Pittman Recreation Centers. We will also consolidate after school programming at an additional six locations, providing more robust and engaging programming for our children. In addition to expanding the Centers of Hope program, this fall the Department of Parks and Recreation is proud to present new playgrounds in some of our parks and improvements to many of our facilities, including a new artificial turf field and building addition at Ben Hill Center of Hope, as well as a new mural and new landscaping at Thomasville Center of Hope. I would like to reassure our residents and visitors that we are working diligently to enhance their quality of life with more state-of-the art recreational opportunities. Don’t forget to log on to atlantaga.gov/iPARCS to register for our fall programming. Sincerely, George A. Dusenbury, Commissioner Department of Parks and Recreation

Pardon Our Progress As Mayor Reed mentioned in his letter from this past summer’s guide, the Department of Parks and Recreation has been hard at work on making vast improvements in our communities. The City of Atlanta takes great pride in investing in our youth and our communities, and this fall we are proud to present new playgrounds in some of our parks and improvements to many of our Centers of Hope.
Thomasville Building Art Installation Project Start: May 23-May 25 | Artist: Stephanie Gassman
In an effort to enhance and improve the appearance of the Thomasville Center of Hope, the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs commissioned artist Stephanie Gassman, to design and install a meaningful art piece on the front of the building that told a story of hope and bright futures. The artist worked with the youth at Thomasville to design the colorful and lively “HOPE: Reach for the Stars” art piece that you see below.
Ben Hill Football / Baseball Field Project Start: Mid January, 2013, Expected Completion: Mid July, 2013
Ben Hill Recreation Center Building Addition Project Start: November 15,2012, Expected Completion: September 1, 2013
Located in Southwest Atlanta, Ben Hill Center of Hope has a few major additions that our youth and the entire community will enjoy, including a new artificial turf field and a building addition. Spinks-Collins Park Project Start: September 25, 2012, Expected Completion: June 28, 2013 Before
After
For the past six months, the Department of Parks and Recreation has been hard at work building a brand new playground on this 22-acre park, which already has pavilions, trails, exercise equipment, and much more. Not only does Spinks- Collins have a new playground, it is now one of Atlanta’s sustainable parks. The park now has a bioswale, a landscape element designed to remove silt and pollution from surface runoff water.
Esther Peachey LeFever Park Project Start: December 11, 2012, Completion: May 25, 2013 The master plan, which you see to the left, was developed by the City of Atlanta’s Office of Park Design and the Cabbagetown Neighborhood Improvement Association in 2012. Completed this summer, this playground has undergone a total redevelopment. See the photos below of the new park with skyline views of downtown Atlanta.

Cyclorama Programs African American Faces of the Civil War: An Album Ronald S. Coddington, Assistant Managing Editor, The Chronicle of Higher Education Thursday, July 11, 2013, 6:30 pm For many, the film Glory was the first introduction to the presence of African American men in the Civil War. And while much of Glory is not based on historical fact, African American men not only fought in the Civil War and used it as a means to secure their own freedom, but also they played more diverse roles in the war than most realize. In his book, African American Faces of the Civil War, Ronald Coddingham uses archival images, military records and personal files to tell the stories of men whose voices too long have been silenced and whose contributions to the war effort have been left out of traditional Civil War scholarship. Poignant in its simplicity and humanity, Coddington’s book forces us to rethink not only slavery and the importance of the Emancipation Proclamation, but also it forces us to rethink what it took to save the Union. Reception with author will precede the lecture. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Tickets: Adults $10, Seniors $8, Children (4-12) $8
High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America Jessica B. Harris, Author Saturday, July 20, 2013, 6 pm Soul food, long known to be a staple of the African American diet is, alternately, harshly criticized and fiercely guarded. In her groundbreaking book, High on the Hog, Jessica Harris traces the history of soul food from its roots in traditional West African foodways and the swill fed to enslaved Africans during The Middle Passage to plantation kitchens and haute cuisine restaurants in New York and New Orleans. Ms. Harris argues that her main topic is the Africanizing of the Southern palate and, by extension, of the American one. While understanding current health trends, Ms. Harris laments that Black cuisine often is seen as unhealthy and inelegant. She believes that one day the true food of Africa will have its place at the foodie table. Join Ms. Harris as she takes the audience on a culinary journey unlike any other. Reception with author will precede the lecture. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Tickets: Adults $10, Seniors $8, Children (4-12) $8
Understanding the Civil War: A Family Program Saturday, July 20, 2012, 11 am – 4 pm Spend a family day at Cyclorama learning in fun, hands-on ways about the Civil War. Civil War educators will teach young people and their families the games and pastimes of the era; while face painters will help visitors express themselves. The program is free with admission to the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum. Tickets: Adults $10, Seniors $8, Children (4-12) $8
America’s Divided Kingdom: The Jewish Experience of the Civil War Film screening of Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray with Jonathan Gruber, Film Director, Producer and Writer Thursday, August 8, 2013, 7 pm Civil War scholarship often overlooks the roles Jews played in efforts to preserve both the Union and the Confederacy. In, Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray, a first-of-its-kind film by Jonathan Gruber, we learn of the struggles American Jews faced both on the battlefield and at home during this nation’s deadliest war. The history of the roles Jews played in the Civil War is fascinating, and Mr. Gruber’s film reveals information about this history that will change forever how the viewer understands the Civil War. This program is the first of a two-part series created by and presented in partnership with The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum. Reception with filmmaker will precede the screening. Tickets: Adults $10, Seniors $8, Children (4-12) $8, Breman Members $8
All the Daring of the Soldier: Women and the American Civil War Dr. Elizabeth D. Leonard, Professor of History, Colby College Thursday, August 22, 2013, 6:30 pm Conventional wisdom tells us that the role women played during the Civil War was that they patiently waited to eagerly tend to the physical and psychological needs of their husbands, brothers and fathers as they returned home from war. This notion, while true for some women, was not the reality for many. In her book, All the Daring of the Soldier, Elizabeth Leonard debunks the myth that women, African American and white, did not contribute directly to the war effort. Like their male counterparts, these women sacrificed family life and risked their lives for the Confederacy and Union alike. Not only were they nurses, but many fought in battle and served as spies. Moreover, many women, like the men besides them, just wanted the thrill and adventure war offered.Join Dr. Leonard as she talks about these women and shines a light on one of the Civil War’s best kept secrets. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. 42
