Letter from the Mayor

Greetings: I am proud to present the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation’s 2014 Summer Guide. The summer season is a great opportunity for residents to take advantage of the city’s 33 recreation centers, and various camps and programs that provide our children the opportunity to learn and play in a safe environment. The City of Atlanta continues to invest in our children by bringing back the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club and Camp Best Friends, and we are proud to launch the new Kids @ Play program. The Mayor’s Summer Reading Club encourages every child in Atlanta to dig into reading while on their summer break from school. More than 15,000 children in our city will receive a free book and an opportunity to win a free bike when they participate in the club, which holds several public events and book readings throughout the summer. Now in its 33rd year, Camp Best Friends is a summer camp designed to keep youth and seniors active and healthy by providing a safe, supportive, and structured environment for cultural, educational, and recreational programs. The new Kids @ Play program provides our children opportunities to remain active and healthy through recreational activities at their neighborhood parks. This summer, residents and visitors will enjoy many new additions at our outdoor pools, including the new state-of-the-art pool and bathhouse opening at John A. White Park. Also new this pool season, adults and seniors can participate in the new early bird swim at Grant Park Pool, and seniors can take advantage of free swim at Powell and South Bend Recreation Centers. On behalf of the City of Atlanta, I encourage our residents to take advantage of the many exciting recreational opportunities our city has to offer. Please visit www.atlantaga.gov and www.atlantaga.gov/iparcs for more information. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

Kasim Reed 1

Letter from the Commissioner

Greetings: Summer is finally upon us, and the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is gearing up for another season of inspiring and exhilarating programs and activities. We are excited to announce the 33rd year of Camp Best Friends. Through the Camp Best Friends program, DPR is able to support Mayor Reed’s commitment to ensure that young people receive academic enrichment, engage in physical fitness activities, learn technology and build character. This summer, CBF will host over 2,500 youth, who will engage in an integrated reading curriculum, creative writing, drama, sports, music, outdoor adventure and much more. DPR is particularly excited about the residential camp at Lake Allatoona, where campers will engage in environmental education, camping, swimming, boating and much more. DPR will be offering many new programs this summer for residents and visitors of all ages such as Double Dutch Aerobics, which is no longer just for kids, but a great way to burn calories while having fun, and Kids @ Play, which gets children in Atlanta “off the couch” and into parks. For three hours, leaders will guide free activities for children, including nontraditional sports, nutrition, games, fitness demos, arts & crafts, board/water games and much more! Providing a healthy lifestyle for residents of Atlanta is a top priority for DPR, and summer is the perfect time of year to experience Atlanta’s spectacular parks, beautifully maintained with gazebos, pavilions and trails. We particularly encourage you to enjoy new amenities like the newly constructed John A. White Park Pool, the Disc Golf Course at Perkerson and the stateof-the-art new playground equipment at Tucson, Tullwater and Benteen parks. So get out, get active and enjoy all of the activities that Parks and Recreation has to offer. Sincerely,

George A. Dusenbury, Commissioner Department of Parks and Recreation
