Letter from the Mayor

Greetings: I am proud to present the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation’s 2014 Winter Program Guide. Together, we have accomplished much to be proud of this season. Not only have we transformed ten of our recreation centers into Centers of Hope, we have also worked to make health, fitness and technology integral components to our programming. The Department of Parks and Recreation is ensuring that hot meals and healthy snacks are provided to the hundreds of children who participate in our after school program, and free Wi-Fi is now available at all ten Centers of Hope. In addition to ensuring that the City of Atlanta fulfills its commitment to providing exceptional recreational programing, my administration will continue to work with Atlanta’s business and philanthropic community to upgrade facilities and expand programming. I encourage our residents to take advantage of these and the many more recreational opportunities our city has to offer. I also urge residents to check out the iPARCS (internet parks, arts & recreation customer service) online registration system. On behalf of the City of Atlanta, enjoy all the recreational and developmental opportunities offered throughout this winter. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

Kasim Reed Mayor of Atlanta

Letter from the Commissioner

Greetings: I am pleased to present the City of Atlanta’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 2014 Winter Program Guide. DPR is excited to announce another season of impactful and innovative programs and activities. DPR also is celebrating an exceptional year—from expanding Mayor Reed’s Center of Hope Initiative to 10 sites—to installing Wi-Fi at each site. With funding support from the state and through a partnership with APS, we provide all children in our afterschool program a hot meal for supper and transportation to 10 of our recreation centers. DPR continued to make significant physical improvements to our parks and recreation centers. The newly constructed Spink-Collins Park includes state-of-the-art playground equipment, trails, exercise equipment and a uniquely designed pavilion. We completely rebuilt Esther Peachey Lefever Park in Cabbagetown. At Ben Hill, we were able to show off the new, 7,000 square foot addition to the center and our new artificial turf field. We also opened a new dog park—our third—at Renaissance Park. Through our parks and state-of-the-art recreation facilities and programs, DPR strives to improve and change people’s lives every day. We will continue to work to make our city stronger by providing exceptional spaces and memorable experiences. We encourage you all to get out and enjoy all of the activities that Parks and Recreation has to offer. Sincerely,

George A. Dusenbury, Commissioner Department of Parks and Recreation
