A Perspective on Gratitude
I am grateful to be here and owning a business that celebrates the wonderful people and places of the Sandy Springs community. I am grateful for my health and the health of my close friends and family. I’m grateful to my team, who has worked their rear ends off in these rollercoaster-like times. And I’m grateful to myself for having the patience and the drive to move forward, even though the road ahead hasn’t always been clear. We’re coming into the season of being grateful as well. Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. And while it’s always been a day to reflect and give thanks for all that you have, I think it had become routine more than genuine, sincere gratitude for many of us. But these past two years have given us all a chance to really look and examine what we have. For me, it’s been my community. I’ve been so lucky to have lived in the Chastain Park area of Sandy Springs for the past 35 years. I’ve raised my kids here, built businesses and made lifelong friends in this vibrant and beautiful community. I’ve always known it’s a special place full of caring people. But watching this group of people pull together to help one another, to keep each other going through acts of charity, service and just plain kindness has shown me that this community truly cares about one another. If you know someone who is making a difference for the better, please let us know so we can celebrate the positive people of our community in our upcoming issues of My Sandy Springs.

Experts say NO. The question of whether the real estate market is a bubble ready to pop seems to be dominating a lot of conversations – and everyone has an opinion. Jorge Sicilia, Chief U.S. Economist at BBVA Research, says, “Conditions today are quite different than in the early 2000s, particularly in terms of credit availability. The current climb in house prices instead reflects strong demand amid tight supply helped along by record-low interest rates. Millennials need houses. Prices will keep rising for a while because inventory is so low.” Sicilia adds, “Underwriting standards are still strong, so there is little risk of a bubble developing.”

Atlanta’s sweetheart Stacey Weiss has just about seen it all. After overcoming an addiction to painkillers 13 years ago and navigating a public divorce, Stacey has recently taken the next step to becoming her best self. Her inspirational journey to health has included quitting smoking, working out and healing her past traumas, all while sharing her ups and downs with her community. While she’s continuing in her efforts to do and be better, at 51, this single mother of two couldn’t be happier or more confident about her identity and her future.
Q: What inspired you to quit smoking and get healthy? Stacey Weiss: I started doing some personal growth and healing work in October 2019. A year later, through my deep dive into my personal healing, I began to learn to love myself and realized what a cruel thing smoking was to do to myself. Being a smoker did not align anymore with who I was growing into. I have tried to quit probably 15 times over the past five years, but until I really started to value myself, I couldn’t do it.
Q: What resources did you use along your journey to quit smoking and get fit? SW: I weaned down from a pack a day to five cigarettes a day over six months, then I did a juice fast to push me over the edge and give up the last few cigarettes. I used an app called Quit It. For my fitness journey, I work out and am part of a transformational healing community called YourDay Balance Game. I train with the leader of the group three times a week, and I eat very clean. The most significant component of getting fit has been the personal growth and healing I have concentrated on for the last 18 months. Most of the weight I released was the emotional weight of past trauma that I’d been carrying around for a long time. SW: The most challenging part is getting started. Just pick one healthy thing you can add to your life and start doing it. That one thing will become routine or a habit, then add the next one. Just take it one step at a time, and eventually, they build on each other, and before you know it, you’re living healthy. Your life is happening whether you want to participate in it or not. Start being the creator of your life.
Q: What are some of your favorite places in Sandy Springs? SW: I enjoy going to The Springs Cinema & Taphouse, getting my nails done at Hammond Nails, shopping at Fox’s, and grabbing a bite at 10 Degrees South or Rumi’s Kitchen. jamisonandcompany.com, instagram.com/staceysweiss

Seasant Chen ARTS ADVOCATE • DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS • LEADERSHIP DEVELOPER By Denise K. James
When Seasant Chen’s grandparents met in the United States many years ago at UC Berkeley in California, the couple bonded over a shared passion for education. It was this same passion they brought back to their native country of China and eventually passed down to their granddaughter. Chen, who is the current director of admissions at Brandon Hall School, an independent college preparatory school in Sandy Springs, said that even though her whole family dabbled in other industries, education was always “at their core.” “They wanted to share their knowledge to help students achieve their potential,” she says. Following in her grandparents’ footsteps, Chen chose to pursue higher education at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah. She majored in painting and photography and says the fine arts have given her much insight into understanding human nature — insight that became invaluable to her career. During her studies at SCAD, Chen worked as an advisor for other international students, becoming the college’s director of international admissions after graduation. She felt admissions gave her an even wider reach than being a classroom teacher. “Admissions became a way for me to use my own experiences to create a better experience for international families,” she says.

“The mission of Brandon Hill is a large part of why I took the job,” she explains. “We want students to find their own path and their own way. When people think of leadership, they often think of a CEO or the president, but we want students to be brave enough to embrace themselves. Once you find and accept yourself, you can let bravery lead your life.” Chen adds that while some might find an arts education outdated or less useful in today’s increasingly STEM-focused world, she believes the arts are crucial for mental development, critical thinking and inclusivity. “Diversity and inclusion are not just about race,” she says. “It’s about being okay with who you are and with the different people in this world.” When Chen isn’t engaging with the students and families of Brandon Hall, you can find her around Sandy Springs, spending time with her family at the beautiful local parks or indulging in a good meal at JINYA Ramen Bar or Egg Harbor Cafe. brandonhall.org

After departing her role at SCAD, Chen accepted a position in Atlanta with the National Society of High School Scholars. She worked as the director of academic programs, bringing international value to a mostly American honor society. She stepped into her current role at Brandon Hall in May 2021 — a role she’d applied for previously but set aside in order to work for the honor society. Turns out, she’d had her eye on the school for a while.
