FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Over the last two decades, Mary Pat has successfully guided In 2022, the Garden the Garden through two major capital and endowment Seasons (2007-2011) and Nourish & Flourish marked many milestones. campaigns—New (2014-2019)—which built new destination gardens, renovated On the following pages, you will learn more about this incredible year, but first, please allow me to take this opportunity to highlight what was undoubtedly 2022’s most significant milestone: celebrating Mary Pat Matheson’s 20 years of visionary leadership. From the moment Mary Pat took the helm in 2002, she has focused on transforming the Garden from a local attraction into an internationally recognized institution with best-in-class plant displays, scientific research, educational opportunities, and cultural experiences. With an incomparable combination of horticultural knowledge, business acumen, and entrepreneurial spirit, she has launched popular exhibits that delight guests of all ages. We simply cannot imagine a year without Orchid Daze, Atlanta Blooms, blockbuster summer art installations such as Origami in the Garden, fall festivities including Scarecrows in the Garden, or the iconic winter tradition of Garden Lights, Holiday Nights… yet none of these spectacular exhibitions existed before Mary Pat brought them to life.

beloved garden spaces, and constructed beautiful facilities on our Midtown campus while also opening a second location in Gainesville, Georgia. And now, along with a host of community and philanthropic partners, she is leading us into a bright new future as we work together to connect the Garden to the Atlanta BeltLine and grow in service to our city. It is exciting to reflect on all the Garden has achieved and all that is to come. I am honored to chair a nonprofit organization that has such an important mission and is succeeding by every measure, thanks in large part to the contributions of donors and friends like you. With your continued support, the Garden will reach many more milestones and remain a beloved urban oasis for future generations.

John H. Crawford, IV

FROM THE ANNA AND HAYS MERSHON PRESIDENT & CEO Since 1976, the Atlanta Botanical Garden has connected people with plants in a variety of educational, entertaining, and enchanting ways. Some of our best memories of 2022 were the “normal days” and simple joys—hearing peals of laughter of school groups gathering in the Levy Parterre, seeing volunteer docents leading tours through the Dorothy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory, and smelling the tantalizing aromas of meals being prepared in the Outdoor Kitchen. Many of our programs were paused or dramatically modified during the pandemic, and it was fantastic to return to “business as usual” in 2022. Yet, of course, gardens are always changing and evolving, and ours is no exception. We renovated several areas this year, most notably the Anne Cox Chambers Garden and the Perennial Garden, and we presented stunning exhibitions like Rich Soil and Origami in the Garden that helped to drive attendance. While our annual calendar of events, classes, and community outreach was in full swing, our behind-the-scenes operations were busier 4

than ever. Our horticulturists were hard at work cataloging, propagating, evaluating, and preparing beautiful displays of our extensive plant collections, and our Conservation & Research team led dozens of projects to protect imperiled species in fragile ecosystems across the Southeast and beyond. This year, in addition to the annual operating activities included in this report, we made great progress in realizing our vision of expanding the Garden’s footprint and impact. In the years to come, pedestrians and cyclists will access the Garden through a brandnew entrance directly on the Atlanta BeltLine, funded by a historymaking campaign that is off to a strong start. From now until the Garden’s expansion is open to the public, we will share our campaign progress with you at the end of every annual report. And we look forward to seeing you at the Garden as we continue to grow!

Mary Pat Matheson

YEAR IN REVIEW

BLOOMING & G ROWING Throughout 2022, new and renovated garden spaces took center stage.

Anne Cox Chambers Garden Our beloved entrance garden, honoring longtime benefactor and Lifetime Trustee, Anne Cox Chambers, underwent a spectacular renovation this year. The striking, elegant design incorporates crisp, classic elements framed by a lovely grove of mature trees. Clipped hedges of the compact holly Ilex ‘Soft Touch’ encircle a spectacular yellow river of sweet flag (Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’) and a complementary stream of dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus ‘Nana’) that winds through the woodland clearing. The renovated space is now ornamented with ethereal bird sculptures by the French artist Cédric Le Borgne; a beautifully curated selection of irises, hydrangeas, phlox, and anemone providing seasonal pops of color; and a rich fabric of ferns and evergreens playing key supporting roles. Perennial Garden Since 1976, this area has been central to the guest experience, and it received a remarkable refresh in 2022. The plan focused on layering plants to achieve a beautiful succession of blooms throughout the seasons, emphasizing eye-catching combinations of new cultivars and hard-to-find heirloom varieties. Along the gently curving pathways, effusive floral displays now feature Iris ‘Night Thunder’, Baptisia ‘Purple Smoke’, Lilium ‘Conca d’Or’, Hemerocallis ‘Chicago Picotee Lace’, Crinum moorei, Camellia tsaii ‘Elina Cascade’, and so much more. Major support from the L and C Wood Family Foundation, as well as Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust grant funding, made this renovation possible.

10

Sourwood Terrace At the base of the Kendeda Canopy Walk, a series of woodland beds were thoughtfully updated, incorporating new plantings among established trees, shrubs, and perennials. Two red oaks had died near Sourwood Terrace in recent years, and the new light patterns that emerged provided excellent opportunities to showcase a palette of bright pink blooms with accents of silver and yellow. New plantings of Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Gatsby Pink’, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Pinky Winky’, Phlox paniculata ‘Glamor Girl’, Aquilegia chrysantha, and Fothergilla ‘Blue Shadow’ now coordinate with the Garden’s exceptional collection of native azaleas and rhododendrons. Spring Blooms As winter wanes, our Midtown location hosts an annual bulb festival, Atlanta Blooms, and in 2022, our Gainesville garden increased the wattage on its very own Spring Blooms bulb display. Gainesville selections include an early-flowering Winter Aconite, Eranthis hyemalis; various cultivars of small-flowered, fragrant Narcissus; striking taller forms of Fritillaria; and easy-care, drought-resistant Triteleia, or Triplet Lilies, with masses of bluepurple blooms and grass-like foliage. These new additions complement already-exuberant established plantings, making the Gainesville garden a perfect day trip for visitors from near and far.

C E L E B R AT I N G A RT I N T H E GARDEN The Garden plays a unique role in Atlanta’s cultural landscape, showcasing art in a beautiful botanical setting.

Kristine Mays 12

Rich Soil The Garden’s early-spring Orchid Daze exhibition was particularly breathtaking in 2022. Accompanying the glorious, fragrant orchids in the Dorothy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory and Fuqua Orchid Center were installations of life-sized, three-dimensional sculptures by the San Francisco-based artist Kristine Mays. This exquisite, thought-provoking show, entitled Rich Soil, featured dynamic figural works created from intricately-woven copper-hued metal strands. Many of the works were inspired by performances of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Company and, in the words of the artist, “these images reflect joy, jubilation and hope.” Her pieces were artfully arranged among golden Dancing Lady orchids, delicate moth orchids, and vivacious Vandas, creating one of the most memorable Orchid Daze displays in Garden history.

Origami in the Garden This year’s summer exhibition celebrated the Japanese art of paperfolding in a BIG way, with 18 installations of 68 origami-inspired metal sculptures, many of which were unveiled for the first time here in Atlanta. Created by Jennifer and Kevin Box, in collaboration with origami masters Beth Johnson, Michael G. LaFosse, and Robert J. Lang, the exhibition featured a grazing deer in front of Longleaf restaurant, a show-stopping Pegasus on the Great Lawn, pinwheel sunflowers blowing in the breeze on the Anne Cox Chambers Flower Walk, and a sky-high bouquet of bright blooms in Skyline Pond. In Cascades Garden, nine origami boats called “Paper Navigators” appeared to float in the water, with a tenth held in the outstretched hand of the Garden’s iconic Earth Goddess.

Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects Made with LEGO® Bricks At our Gainesville garden, guests were excited to discover an exhibition of 15 oversized sculptures built entirely with offthe-shelf LEGO® blocks. Nature Connects was the inaugural exhibit when the Gainesville garden opened in 2015, and this new show was an equally huge hit. The largest sculpture, an ornate jewel-toned peacock, was constructed of more than 68,000 bricks. Other fan favorites included a Galapagos tortoise, a super-sized corn spider, a roseate skimmer dragonfly, a hummingbird alighting on a trumpet flower, and a monarch butterfly on milkweed. In addition to sparking creativity, this exhibition helped to raise awareness about preserving habitats, protecting pollinators, and treasuring our natural world. 13

NOURISHING OUR COMMUNIT Y Education and outreach are central to the Garden’s mission as we work together to create a healthier, greener planet.

AgLanta Eats The Garden’s flagship community outreach program, Plant. Eat. Repeat., connects with a variety of neighborhood gardens, urban agriculture operations, and food producers every year. In August 2022, it was exciting to once again host the hyper-local food festival, AgLanta Eats, welcoming more than 1,000 attendees to enjoy tastings prepared by top local chefs utilizing the freshest ingredients from metro Atlanta growers and farms. This event supports AgLanta’s mission—to cultivate a resilient, equitable, inclusive, just, and accessible food system—and benefits the “Grows-ALot” program in association with Groundwork Atlanta and the Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Resilience. A fun fact about our 2022 event: we collected ten large bins of compost and three bins of recycling, but only ONE bag of trash! Outdoor Kitchen The centerpiece for culinary programs at the Atlanta Botanical Garden is the Edible Garden’s Outdoor Kitchen, a delicious destination where foodies can learn about the cultivation and consumption of fresh, sustainablygrown produce. This year, programming resumed at nearly pre-pandemic levels with a dynamic mix of free-with-admission Chef Demos; cooking classes offered as part of our adult education programming; and ticketed dinners in our wildly popular Well Seasoned Chef and Fresh Plates series. The Outdoor Kitchen was also a focal point for the return of signature events such as Vanilla Sunday and Chocolate-covered Weekend, as well as the Refugee Recipe Celebration, a multicultural gathering highlighting the distinctive ingredients and cultural traditions that help make Atlanta such a diverse and special place.

14

Camps for Kids In 2022, we offered camp-days during school breaks and week-long summer camp sessions that were full of discovery, adventure, and nature exploration. In addition to camps for children ages 6-10, our Middle School STEAM Summer Program returned in 2022, partnering with Clayton County Public Schools to introduce a group of students from Title I schools to in-depth topics related to ecology, botany, and food science. Through this program, middle schoolers examined environmental and social problems facing Atlantans while also having fun creating nature-art projects, conducting experiments, and cooking with natural ingredients in the Outdoor Kitchen. Kinder in the Garden For the previous two years, school field trips had been almost entirely put on pause, so it was truly exciting to see student groups of all ages coming back to the Garden in 2022. We were especially thrilled to bring back the much-beloved Kinder in the Garden program, an initiative of the City of Atlanta’s Cultural Experience Project that provides every kindergartner in Atlanta Public Schools with the opportunity to visit the Atlanta Botanical Garden. By introducing life-science concepts to thousands of kindergarten students annually, this program is instrumental in instilling a lifelong love of nature while nourishing young minds. 15

A D VA N C I N G PLANT C O N S E RVAT I O N AND RESEARCH The Garden’s Southeastern Center for Conservation works to conserve threatened native plants in a rapidly changing world. 2022 highlights of the Center’s work include:

16

Gap Analysis To develop necessary safeguarding measures to help prevent the extinction of species, our conservation scientists work to identify gaps in ex situ collections held in botanical institutions worldwide. Together with collaborators from national and international organizations, the Southeastern Center for Conservation published two gap analyses in 2022. The first, a global conservation gap analysis of Magnolia, revealed that 98 of the world’s 330 Magnolia species are completely absent from any ex situ collection, thereby offering a framework for prioritizing these species of greatest conservation concern. The second, a gap analysis of plant taxa of conservation concern in the southeastern United States, found that our region surprisingly is faring better than others in plant conservation efforts with 54% of species in collections; findings from this study are being used to prioritize rare plants that are endemic to the Southeast and need to be secured in seed banks and cultivated living collections. Seed Banking As a biodiversity hotspot, the Southeast is at increased risk of loss due to climate change and other anthropogenic influences. Seed banks are a cost-effective and space-efficient method of protecting threatened plant species, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Conservation Seed Bank is quickly growing to be one of the largest in the southeastern United States. Our facility now holds seeds collected from more than 2,700 wild plants, representing 533 species. We collaborate closely with the Center for Plant Conservation, the Southeastern Plant Conservation Alliance, and additional partners on what is truly a team effort to safeguard some of the world’s most unique flora.

Regional Partnerships The Southeastern Plant Conservation Alliance (SE PCA) is a publicprivate partnership of conservation professionals currently chaired by the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Southeastern Center for Conservation. It brings together government agencies, land managers, botanical gardens, university programs, and other experts across fifteen states and two territories in a coordinated effort to restore and prevent the loss of plant diversity in the southeastern United States. In 2022, SE PCA continued its work on 13 focal species, including the relict trillium (Trillium reliquum), American chaffseed (Schwalbea americana), Miccosukee gooseberry (Ribes echinellum), Puerto Rico manjack (Varronia rupicola), and white fringeless orchid (Platanthera integrilabia). 17

CONTRIBUTING TREMENDOUS TIME AND TA L E N T S Volunteers are undeniably essential to the success of the Garden’s multi-faceted mission.

From greeting visitors, leading docent tours, and engaging students and children in STEM activities to supporting important conservation research efforts and working directly with horticulture staff, our volunteers make a difference in countless ways. As it became safe again to gather in person, volunteer orientations at the Garden resumed in 2022, and we were happy to welcome 50 new core volunteers at our Midtown campus this year. By year’s end, a total of more than 500 volunteers contributed 25,000 hours of service in both Midtown and Gainesville, representing an increase of 23% from the previous year. We are incredibly grateful for the contributions of each and every new and longstanding volunteer. Centennial Club In 2022, 135 individuals each contributed more than 100 volunteer hours at the Atlanta Botanical Garden; of those individuals, 24 contributed more than 200 hours of service.

Since first joining the Garden’s volunteer ranks in 2009, Paula White has led docent tours, gardened with horticulturists, greeted guests in the Hardin Visitor Center, shared knowledge at family-friendly discovery stations, and helped at numerous events including concerts, Goblins in the Garden, and Garden Lights, Holiday Nights. A Centennial Club member and 200-hour volunteer since 2011, Paula is also a three-time Volunteer of the Month and a five-time Root of the Garden. While all of her contributions are significant, she has made perhaps the greatest difference in her volunteer leadership roles for the Gardens for Connoisseurs Tour, the annual Garden Symposium, the Plant Explorers Auction, and the biennial Atlanta Botanical Garden Flower Show. When chosen as a Volunteer of the Month in 2013, Paula said, “The Garden has offered an opportunity for constant learning, meeting wonderful people, making friends and connecting to a new home.” We are so pleased that she has found a home here over the past 13 years, and we cannot thank her enough for her involvement and support. 19

Seizing the Opportunity of a Lifetime The Atlanta Botanical Garden has embarked on a visionary initiative to expand the footprint—and the impact—of Atlanta’s beloved urban oasis. This project involves converting almost eight acres along Piedmont Avenue into a sweeping expanse of horticultural beauty while making a vitally important contribution to our city’s green infrastructure.

The new acreage will link the existing Garden to the Atlanta BeltLine’s northeast corridor segment, which is now under construction. Grading and sitework have begun on this stretch of BeltLine trail, connecting to the area behind Ansley Mall and Piedmont Park, making it easier to envision the Garden’s future pedestrian entrance on this high-profile segment. Once the 22-mile BeltLine loop is completed, we look forward to welcoming pedestrians and cyclists from near and far to enjoy our new BeltLine Plaza, Visitor Center, and stunning destination gardens. It is an exciting time as the Garden becomes Atlanta’s only cultural institution with a new front door opening directly onto the BeltLine’s path. We are exceptionally grateful for the early and incredibly generous $5 million investment of Carol and Ramon Tomé and the transformational landmark $25 million commitment from the James M. Cox Foundation. Campaign donors through December 31, 2022 are listed below, and we will continue to recognize the generosity of campaign donors in future annual reports.
