FASHION IN ATLANTA: TRANSFORMING STYLE

Atlanta has long been recognized for its contributions to music, film and the arts. The city also has been making waves in the fashion industry, establishing itself as a burgeoning hub of style and innovation.

The rise of fashion in Atlanta is attributed to several key factors. Designers and brands in the city draw inspiration from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, resulting in a unique blend of styles that is distinctly Atlantan.

The music and entertainment industries, particularly hip-hop and R&B, play a crucial role in shaping the Atlanta fashion scene. Musical artists have become fashion trendsetters.

A new generation of designers is nurtured on the Atlanta campus of SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) where students from all over the world use the city as their muse.

The supportive environment for creatives in Atlanta is the magnet for designers and fashion entrepreneurs from all over the world to make the city their base and an incubator of world-changing ideas.

Atlanta offers an array of options to help you find your Atlanta-inspired style.

FASHION SHOWS

Fashion events happen year-round in the city, but here are three that you don’t want to miss:

RAGTRADE ATLANTA is a creative and event production agency for Atlanta’s fashion ecosystem, helping put together events such as Atlanta Fashion Week, which will take place Oct. 2–7 across the city. The five-day event showcases the latest fashion trends and innovations, and features art, music and culture.

Atlanta International Fashion Show also is a must-do for those looking for inspiration and the latest trends. Thousands, including celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Jermaine Dupri, Dallas Austin, Dwight Howard, Floyd Mayweather and stars of “America’s Next Top Model” have attended. Featuring more than 500 designers, the annual event takes place Sept. 2429 across the city.

The energetic neighborhood’s colorful murals and quirky storefronts create a lively and welcoming atmosphere where shopping is a fun adventure. Make a stop at Wish ATL, a boutique inspired by Atlanta’s culture with a curated selection of street wear, sneakers and contemporary fashion.

trip to Phipps Plaza to shop the latest in luxury brands including Dior, Christian Louboutin, Balenciaga, Valentino, Versace and many more. Just across the street, Lenox Square boasts Neiman Marcus and nearly 250 specialty stores including Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada.

Eastside

Ponce City Market is a stop, not only for great food, but also for fun shopping. The bustling destination features a variety of boutiques offering global brands and locally designed fashion.

DISCOVER ATLANTA’S INTERNATIONAL DINING SCENE

MICHELIN restaurants might bring to mind white tablecloths and plated entrees, perfect for anniversaries or a birthday celebration. While many of Atlanta’s MICHELIN restaurants can certainly serve as special occasion restaurants, there are many that celebrate the diversity of Atlanta’s international cuisine, in all price points. In addition to upscale international fare, casual eateries and even street food make appearances on Atlanta’s MICHELIN lists.

In Atlanta, we have Southern food, as one might suspect, but our soul is no longer found in traditional American comfort food. Our roots run deep into what some would consider the New South: a spicy mix of cultures and tastes. We still savor our collard greens and nowadays we might add a bit of Asian hot sauce and spices to flavor our greens. Our cornmeal-battered fish might well be touched with the smoky taste of chipotle. While we still love our tall glasses of Southern sweet tea, you’re just as apt to see us with a boba tea in hand or a refreshing Thai iced tea.

MICHELIN Guide recognized this melding of flavors when it awarded MICHELIN stars to some of our restaurants, as well as listing many international restaurants on the Bib Gourmand and MICHELIN Recommended lists. The MICHELIN inspectors found 25 types of cuisine during their 2023 review for the inaugural MICHELIN Guide Atlanta that include Japanese, Middle Eastern, European, Indian, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Filipino and Venezuelan offerings, among many more. Dive in and discover flavors that are uniquely Atlanta.

Combining Cultures

Heirloom Market BBQ blends Southern barbecue with Korean marinades and spices, creating a uniquely distinct package in this small, pickup-only destination in a northern suburb of Atlanta. Chef Cody Taylor and chef Jinyeon Lee tend smoked meats paired with Korean pickles and smoked wings that are tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce and served with kimchi mayo. From the spicy Korean pork to tender brisket, homemade banana pudding, sweet and spicy tofu and both traditional Southern and kimchi slaw, it’s possible to create a diverse plate of flavors at this MICHELIN Bib Gourmand spot.

Local Harvests Fuel International Fare

Atlanta’s proximity to Georgia’s many farms and purveyors makes it easy for local ingredients to permeate a menu. The pop-up-turned-restaurant Talat Market is found in the Summerhill neighborhood, very close to Downtown.

LIESL MERKEL
Nam Phuong Vietnamese

The MICHELIN Recommended spot offers co-owners Rod Lassiter and Parnass Savang the opportunity to serve stunning plates full of local Georgia ingredients prepared with Thai techniques. Georgia peaches are juiced for the restaurant’s hamachi crudo, and fresh Georgia trout might show up on the menu, cooked with Thai spices.

MICHELIN Bib Gourmand Arepa Mia is situated in Avondale Estates and plates up crispy arepas stuffed with grass-fed beef, shredded chicken with caramelized peppers and roasted pork. Fresh vegetables picked from local Georgia gardens accent these Venezuelan delicacies as well as the cachapas, fresh corn pancakes topped with vegetables and meats then folded in half.

Omakase Dining

Take your dining to another level with several omakase experiences in Atlanta. These Japanese-style, multi-course feasts allow guests to unearth unique flavors. The MICHELIN-starred MUJŌ offers a modern, edomae-style sushiya. This restaurant started as a pop-up. Executive chef J. Trent Harris now serves an omakase-only tasting experience at MUJŌ, complete with small plates that are followed by nigiri flown in from Japan. At Hayakawa in West Midtown, also MICHELIN-starred, chef Atsushi Hayakawa sources his fish from Tokyo’s toyosu market to create a unique Japanese sushiya experience rarely found outside of Japan.

MICHELIN Recommended Tomo Japanese Restaurant in Buckhead offers an omakase experience focusing on plated courses and sushi with a personalized experience. The varied Chef’s Menu features a la carte dishes ranging from crispy okra tempura to shrimp dumplings, toro tartare, fresh nigiri and sushi.

Tastes of Europe

European flavors emanate from several destinations in the city. MICHELIN Recommended Lyla Lila artfully presents dishes from Southern Europe with a

focus on Italian winemakers and wines from other Southern European regions. The restaurant’s local, seasonal fare is evident in executive chef Craig Richards’ pasta creations, which you can also make during his scheduled pastamaking classes.

Antico Pizza Napoletana has garnered more than 50 accolades and awards including the coveted MICHELIN Bib Gourmand award. Owner Giovanni Di Palma opened Antico Pizza along with his 8-year-old son in 2009 near Georgia Tech. Di Palma’s family Napoletana pizza recipe is prepared with 00 flour and imported San Marzano tomatoes before the pizzas are flash-baked in 1,000-degree ovens created from Santa Maria brick and volcanic rock from Mount Vesuvius.

In Buckhead, MICHELIN Recommended Storico Fresco Alimentari offers lasagnas and pastas shaped into light-as-air pappardelle and tagliatelle, grilled branzino and tiramisu.

MICHELIN Recommended Tiny Lou’s breathes French inspiration into its cuisine. The mod spot with supper club vibes is found in the lower level of the equally hip Clermont Hotel, coincidently garnering a One MICHELIN Key this year.

Neighborhood Finds

Atlanta’s diverse communities make perfect places to start a restaurant. Owners Hope Webb and Walter Cortado of Estrellita chose the in-town Grant Park neighborhood for their cozy Filipino restaurant because of its diversity. The MICHELIN Bib Gourmand restaurant introduces bright flavors in its crispy lumpia and Filipino fried chicken brined in a citrus marinade.

MICHELIN Recommended Chai Pani serves fun, affordable Indian street food in the diverse city of Decatur as chef Meherwan Irani dishes out chaat (street snacks), thalis, Indian sandwiches and self-proclaimed “mindblasting” desserts. In the Inman Park neighborhood, MICHELIN Recommended Delbar offers Middle Eastern delicacies from Iranian born chef Fares Kargar. He strives to transport guests to the countryside of Iran with recipes from his homeland that range from char-grilled wings to tangy dill labneh and lamb Baghali Tahchin topped with a crispy mound of basmati rice.

Buford Highway: Not Just a Street Atlanta’s international corridor of Buford Highway is much more than a stretch of road. It’s an international gathering of immigrant-owned eateries and restaurants ranging from Korean barbecue to a 24-hour taco joint, noodle houses, dim sum palaces and Plaza Fiesta. Many MICHELIN Recommended restaurants are found on this corridor. Han Il Kwan serves traditional Korean recipes such as savory barbecue, comforting stews, spicy soups and fresh grilled fish. Food Terminal (with other locations around the city) reflects the cuisine of Malaysia with a gigantic menu of choices, quite heavy in Asian-style street food. Kamayan ATL started as a pop-up before graduating to its brick and mortar location serving authentic Filipino comfort food. LanZhou Ramen satisfies customers with hand-pulled noodles and soup dumplings while Nam Phuong Vietnamese serves award winning dishes with a repertoire that includes crunchy rolls and the must-have glazed chicken wings in fish sauce.

Introducing New Cultures

MICHELIN Recommended Snackboxe Bistro in Duluth introduced Laotian food to the Atlanta community with heaps of fried wings tossed in jeow bong sauce, steaming khao poon (vermicelli curry soup) and pork belly laap. Chef and owner Thip Athakhanh slightly blends her menu with Vietnamese and Thai food for even more variety in this bright spot in the northern suburbs.

MICHELIN Recommended Xi’an Gourmet House (Midtown) offers counter service as eager customers find glorious handpulled biang biang noodles, steaming shrimp, lamb or pork dumplings and fresh salads, all from the Xi’an region of China. Our city’s international flavors certainly don’t end at our MICHELIN recognized restaurants - that’s just the start of our food odyssey. Use this guide as a springboard to discover all the flavors of Atlanta. The city’s creative conglomeration of dishes comes together to serve something amazing to everyone.

FALL SPORTS IN THE ATL

Check out our Atlanta sports scene. From basketball to football, baseball and more, we have your ticket to the hottest games in town.

Atlanta Falcons

Football season is finally here and the Falcons are looking at new starting quarterback Kirk Cousins to lead them back to the playoffs. The first football Sunday of the season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be Sept. 8, which is when the Falcons start the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers. On Sept. 22, Atlanta will host Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football. The rivals from New Orleans will be visiting the week after and then the Falcons host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, Oct. 3. The Seattle Seahawks will be

the next visitors Oct. 20, and the Dallas Cowboys will roll into town Nov. 3. Even if you can’t make it to the stadium for the action, there’s always one of the many bars in the metro area that are part of the Bud Light Falcons Bar Network that will be having watch parties on game day.

Atlanta Hawks

The new-look Hawks with Trae Young and 2024 NBA Draft first overall pick, Zaccharie Risacher, are back at it for another season that tips off at State Farm Arena this fall. Once again, the

Atlanta Falcons

Hawks will not just have the march to the playoffs to deal with – the path to the post season now includes the in-season NBA Cup, which the Hawks will be using as an opportunity to lift a trophy while also putting a nice chunk of change in the players’ pockets. With State Farm Arena being one of the top venues for basketball in the NBA, Hawks games will once again be a thrill-a-minute for basketball fans in Atlanta.

Atlanta Braves

Truist Park at The Battery will host 16 home games in the season’s final month of September, including a big four-game series Friday, Sept. 13 through Monday, Sept. 16 when Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers will be visiting. Additionally, there will be a Sean Murphy bobblehead giveaway Sept. 3 against the Rockies, a Ludacris bobblehead giveaway the next night and then the Braves are offering a Hogwarts-themed Braves jersey as part of a Harry Potter ticket package on Sept. 5. There will be a City Connect jersey

giveaway for the first 15,000 fans through the gate on Sept. 24 against the Mets, and the Braves will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the annual Los Bravos night on the following night. The final home game of the regular season takes place Sept. 29 against the Royals.

Atlanta United FC

Even after a summer full of soccer in Atlanta, the MLS regular season continues into the fall for Atlanta United FC. There are a handful of home matches left for Atlanta United FC before the playoffs start, and the biggest match left on the home calendar is when international superstar Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF come to play on Sept. 18. This will take place four days after Latin Heritage Night Sept. 14 against Nashville SC. The next home game for Atlanta United FC won’t take place until Oct. 2 against CF Montréal. The regular season ends on Decision Day Oct. 5 as Atlanta United FC hosts the New York Red Bulls with a special ticket package for Boy Scouts. Just like the Falcons, if you can’t get to the stadium for a game, then take advantage of the Atlanta United Pub Partner program where you can visit one of the many bars across town that host watch parties for any given match.

Atlanta Dream

Rhyne Howard and the Atlanta Dream are winding down their regular season and have four home games left in September before the curtain comes down on their WNBA season. Two of those home games are of the special Friday night variety, as the Dream face the Dallas Wings Sept. 6 and the Washington Mystics Sept. 13. Meanwhile, the Dream will celebrate and honor Black college Greek culture Sept. 10 with Divine Nine Night at the Gateway Center Arena. The home finale for the Dream is Sept. 17 against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky – however, this hot ticket is already sold out, which means that you should get tickets to the other Dream games as soon as possible.

Georgia Tech

Head Coach Brent Key and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are looking to follow up their Gasparilla Bowl win in 2023 by ascending to even greater heights in 2024 in the ACC. In addition to the usual

conference schedule that will take place on fall Saturdays at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field, the Yellow Jackets will play their annual game at MercedesBenz Stadium Oct. 19. That is when Tech will host opposing head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for what will surely be one of the more interesting college football games of that particular weekend.

Georgia State University

The early portion of the season will see the new Georgia State Panthers head football coach Dell McGee and his team

stay busy at Center Parc Stadium. Starting with the Sept. 7 home opener against the Chattanooga Mocs, and an out-ofconference game on Sept. 14 against the SEC’s Vanderbilt Commodores, and two Sun Belt Conference games after that, the Panthers will play four straight home games at one point. This includes the annual “Modern Day Hate” rivalry game Sept. 28 against Georgia Southern and then a home game against the Old Dominion Monarchs. If you’re planning on seeing the Panthers in gridiron action locally then this figures to be the perfect time to do so.
