From music gatherings to artist markets, unique festival food, parades and films, our festivals showcase Atlanta’s local culture better than just about anything else.
BY LIESL MERKELCelebrating its 140th year, the Atlanta St. Patrick’s Parade will make its way down Peachtree Street Saturday, March 16 in Midtown. Starting at the intersection of Peachtree and 15th streets, the family-friendly parade will travel down to 5th Street with plenty of viewing room along the way. Get ready for musicians, dancers, Irish and local dignitaries and even a few furry creatures. Keep the party going and indulge a little more at one of our Irish restaurants around town such as Meehan’s Public House, Fadó Irish Pub and Limerick Junction.
Named after the splendid blooming dogwoods found in Piedmont Park, the 88th annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival will take place April 12-14. Dozens of artists will be present in the park representing sculpture, jewelry, glassworks, paintings, pottery and

photography. The nationally renowned Juried Fine Artist Market will lure serious collectors while live music adds the right vibe. Supplement all of that art shopping with a snack from many of the food vendors and stop in at the Kids’ Village to entertain the smaller ones.
If you’d fancy going back in time to a 16th century European country fair, take thyself to the Georgia Renaissance Festival any Saturday or Sunday between April 13-June 2. Located south of the city in Fairburn, the festival flows with gleeful merriment and will welcome Rota Temporis, a hard-driving medieval band straight from Italy, Zoltan the Adequate performing his satisfactory magic and double the number of pub crawls. Shop in the artist market, stay for the jousting and, by all means, come hungry. The festival is known for its food, particularly giant Smoked Turkey Legges, steak on a stake, meat pies, giant pretzels, Peasant Bread Pudding and root beer floats.
Pullman Yards will be home to a reinvigorated SweetWater 420 Fest this year with plenty of local SweetWater beer to complement all that live music. The annual festival will host more than 25 musical performers on three stages, April 20-21. Expect indoor and outdoor stages, food trucks, local vendors, an artist market and much more.
If you’ve got an eye for the silver screen, especially independent films, enjoy the Atlanta Film Festival, happening April 25-May 5. One of only two dozen Academy Award-qualifying festivals in the country, the 47th annual festival will host showings of new independent, international, animated, documentary and short films, with special attention paid to women-directed films, LGBTQ films, Black films, Latin American and regional Southeast films. Documentaries, filmmaker talks and networking opportunities will also happen. One huge bonus? You’ll get to visit some of Atlanta’s best independent movie theaters like The Plaza Theatre, Tara Atlanta and Rialto Center for the Arts, which will host the films.
One of Atlanta’s quirkier offerings, the Inman Park Festival, is located in the in-town neighborhood of the same name and promises a madcap parade, a juried art show, live entertainment and the city’s largest street market, all during the weekend of April 27-28. The Tour of Homes (April 26-28) will offer a glimpse into some of the beautiful craftsmanstyle houses in the neighborhood.
Atlanta’s Central Park will host around 40,000 people May 3-5 as it welcomes a huge lineup of indie rock bands to
its lawn. More than 60 bands including Weezer, Offspring, Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters and Billy Idol will rock the park on multiple stages. The packed weekend will see concertgoers taking in their favorite bands in-between grazing among favorite local food trucks, serving anything from BBQ to veggie friendly corn dogs.
The all-new Latino Family Festival at Stone Mountain Park is sure to be a hit, covering three weekends, May 6-21. Live entertainers will fascinate festivalgoers with Colombian and Mexican ballet, Aztec dancers, Mariachi band, stilt walkers, Panamanian marching band and pleneros. To top it off, each night, the drone show will feature amazing aerial formations synched to upbeat music, and the Latino Festival Light Show will project images on the mountain along with special effects and a fireworks finale.
Piedmont Park hosts one of the largest free jazz festivals in the country over Memorial Day weekend, May 25-27. Produced by the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, the festival celebrates the music, culture and art of jazz by offering a weekend of soulful music presented by everyone from internationally known artists to aspiring local musicians. VIP Experiences are available, as well as a local artist market offering rare finds and the food and beverage market.
Atlanta’s food story has been told by many people over the years but none with the focus and passion that chef Taria Camerino has brought to this project. This is not a typical cookbook. Visitors come to High Museum of Art for compelling, innovative art, and there are new exhibits to explore this spring, including “Black Potters of Old Edgefield, SC” (Feb. 16-May 12), a landmark exhibition featuring ceramic objects created by enslaved African Americans in Edgefield, S.C., that testify to the creativity, knowledge and humanity of the potters. “Dutch Art in a Global Age: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston” (April 19-July 14) features art by Rembrandt and others.
National Center for Civil and Human Rights celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2024. This downtown Atlanta attraction provocatively showcases the Civil Rights Movement and the worldwide human rights movement. The museum offers several speakers, films and events throughout the year. See
“We Who Believe in Freedom: 1964A Transformative Year in Civil Rights” this spring. It features items in the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection.
Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum resides on 30 acres of downtown Atlanta’s tranquil parkland. Visitors can learn more about the 39th president, his family and beliefs through the varied collection, author visits and educational events.
A new exhibit, “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” (March 30-June 23) includes artifacts, footage and firsthand accounts to convey the fear and resilience felt by African American travelers. The Carter Library is partnering with the Center for Puppetry Arts to showcase live performances of Calvin Ramsey’s “Ruth and The Green Book.” Look for author lectures, family days and
panel discussions throughout the run of the exhibit.
Embrace football year-round at the College Football Hall of Fame. Kick a field goal on Peach Bowl Field. Test your skills in the recently opened Microsoft Gaming Lounge on one of six Xbox Series X consoles featuring Madden 24 or NCAA Football 14. The newest exhibition, “Big Ten: Coast to Coast” (now through August) explores the history and impact of the Big Ten Conference.

Illuminarium Atlanta offers visitors a unique sensory immersion into space or the savanna. Illuminarium combines 4K laser projection, cinematic audio, in-floor haptics and realistic scents to create an authentic, immersive experience. It takes place entirely indoors within two rooms.
Visit the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University to explore the art and history of cultures worldwide. Two intriguing exhibits coming this spring are “Recasting Antiquity: Whistler, Tanagra and the Female Form” (Feb. 3-May 19), featuring works on paper by the American artist James McNeill Whistler from the 1890s and ancient Tanagra figurines on loan from the Louvre Museum. “Songs from the Compost” (Feb. 3-May 19), is a video installation that explores different forms of consciousness and the unique dimensions of symbiotic life.
Children’s Museum of Atlanta is a place for hands-on exploration and discovery for children 8 and younger. Its newest exhibit, “Outside the Box” (through May 5), sparks imagination and inspires learning by encouraging children to tap into their creativity and explore stories, costumes and the construction center.
The 33-acre Atlanta History Center boasts thought-provoking exhibits, the historic Swan House, the Smith Family Farm and beautiful park-like grounds. The center features an exhibition on the life and work of interior designer Ruby Ross Wood (through June 30). It includes an extensive collection of Wood’s iconic designs, photos and documents.
Take a journey to Stone Mountain Park this spring, where outdoor fun awaits. Visitors can enjoy the Scenic Railroad and participate in engaging family-friendly events. Spring FUN Break (March 30-April 7) and Dino Fest (March 16-April 28) are terrific opportunities to experience all things dino. This includes high-flying dinosaurs, a 4-D dinosaurthemed movie, life-sized replicas and the prehistoric drone and light show.
Experience the home of the iconic beverage in an interactive indoor attraction. Investigate the vault housing the secret formula, peek behind-thescenes at the bottling process and
observe Coca-Cola artifacts from around the world. The immersive Beverage Lab is now open, too. It takes a deep dive into the beverage world and lets guests explore the science and creativity behind Coca-Cola.
Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) is the Southeast’s only museum devoted exclusively to design. Stop by the museum this spring for its newest exhibit, “Al Dente: The Design of Pasta.” This exhibition delves into pasta, one of Italy’s most beloved culinary treasures. It explores the design, history and advancements surrounding this delicious food.
If you love baby animals, Zoo Atlanta is the place to be. Kiazi, a southern white rhinoceros and Oliver, Fern and Watson, the first binturong siblings ever born at Zoo Atlanta, join the newly arrived 2-year-old Plains Zebra Imara, 1-year-old male Sumatran tiger Bob and Nangka, an infant Sumatran orangutan. Look for special events this spring, like the Atlanta Science Festival at the Zoo (March 9) and Run Like Wild 5K (April 27).
Center for Puppetry Arts is one of Atlanta’s best-kept secrets. Bring the family to see one of the full-scale productions and spend some time in the museum. New York-based visual artist Nehprii Amenii added pieces of her work, rich with personal narratives, to the Special Exhibit Gallery. Shows this spring include “The Emperor’s New Clothes” (March 12-24) and “Stellaluna” (March 26-May 19).
Visitors can spend the day in this hands-on museum exploring dinosaurs, prehistoric cultures and scientific discoveries. See “Spiders — From Fear to Fascination” (through May 5), where you can see eye-to-eyes with more than 250 natural spider specimens, both live and preserved. Little Critter’s Day (April 20) celebrates spring with baby animals and themed crafts and activities. Flora, Fauna and Flight (March 23-June 23) is an outdoor exhibit showcasing how plants and animals defy gravity through flight.
Guests visit Georgia Aquarium to observe some of the world’s most magnificent animals, but not all live underwater. The aquarium recently opened a colorful coastal bird exhibit in the Margaritaville Vacation Club Dolphin Coast lobby featuring aquatic
and arboreal elements. Also, the COASTLINE CAFÉ is now open on the Georgia Aquarium rooftop, offering sweeping views and tasty treats. Look for a renovated freshwater adventure in the River Scout exhibit featuring new species like African tigerfish, coming in the spring.

Stiles Fish Camp and MICHELIN Star restaurant Bacchanalia, she has opened doors for other female chefs. Bacchanalia’s executive pastry chef Carla Tomasko fell in love with fresh ingredients at her father’s farm in Ecuador and has been part of Quatrano’s team for more than 10 years. Chef Faye Poon, W.H. Stiles Fish Camp’s executive chef went from practicing law in Thailand to working in Quatrano’s kitchen.
Also leading the way is Tal Baum, owner of Bellina Alimentari, Falafel Nation, Rina, Atrium, Aziza and her latest addition, Carmel. Born and raised in Haifa, Israel, Baum also spent time in Florence, Italy. Each of her restaurants speak to her own travels and experiences, which is where her passions meet chef Brenda Ogando’s. As Aziza’s executive chef, Ogando
explores Israeli cuisine with influences from Moroccan, Lebanese and Persian kitchens and from her travels around the world and her Puerto Rican roots.
In the 1990s, Chef Luz Martinez Obregon’s family opened a restaurant in Atlanta that explored the true flavors of their home country of Mexico. Martinez Obregon’s intention was to pursue a career in graphic design, but that quickly changed when she found her passion in the kitchen working with her family. She now oversees Zocalo, Taqueria La Luz and the soon-to-open Luze Mexicano Cocina.
Trailblazer chef Taylur Davis, owner of Locale Island Eats at Politan Row, shares childhood dishes of island-inspired entrees. Soon, her innovative take on chopped island meats will also be offered at Halidom Eatery in East Atlanta.

work on B1B bombers in the U.S. Air Force was similar to the science of baking, she transitioned into the kitchen. As executive pastry chef for Rocket Farm Restaurants, Poulos designs the dessert menu for the more than 25 restaurants in the Ford Fry collective.
A Georgia Tech grad, Le Bon Nosh’s chef-founder Forough Vakili pursued a career as a chemical engineer before moving to France where she crafted her culinary art. What started as an idea in France came to fruition in Atlanta where Le Bon Nosh is the culmination of Vakili’s unique experiences.
Chef Zainab Turay has also made Atlanta the place where her dreams became real. The first-time restaurateur will soon open Press Waffle Co. in East Atlanta, after working 24 years in operations.
Skills from another life came in handy for Melissa Bialoglow, executive sous chef at Bold Catering and Events. After 13 years working in real estate, she walked into Bold asking for an opportunity. More than 10 years later, she is having the time of her life seeing her culinary art bring joy to guests.
Music seems to also be a pathway to the food industry. Korean native and chef Jiyeon Lee, owner of MICHELIN Bib Gourmand restaurant Heirloom BBQ, was a KPOP sensation in the 1980s with multiple hit albums. The recording studio was also home for Kirsten Spencer before she embarked on a culinary adventure. The No. 1, platinum-selling songwriter used to work in the industry to sustain her musical aspirations and now returns as co-owner of Grind Time Coffee Co., collaborating with her sister, chef Dana Rene
After owning an environmental cleaning company that focused on employing battered women in other states, chef Mia Oriño sought to bring authentic Filipino flavors to Atlanta. In 2018, KamayanATL started as a pop-up. In 2023, her now-brick-and-mortar restaurant is listed on the MICHELIN Guide Recommended Restaurants. Atlanta fell in love with Filipino cuisine, and now it has become a movement. A key player in that movement has been Filipino food advocate Hope Webb, owner of MICHELIN Bib Gourmand Estrellita - which also started as a pop-up in the streets of Atlanta.
Starting also as a pop-up and evolving into a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand restaurant in Atlanta is Arepa Mia, owned by chef Lis Hernandez. As a young child in Venezuela, Hernandez used to help her mom who made arepas on the streets for more than two decades. A similar childhood experience resonates with Mayra Vazquez, chef at El Tesoro. Vazquez’s mom also served as a chef at El Tesoro for many years. Now, chef Mayra has taken over the kitchen at one of Atlanta’s popular Mexican restaurants. The journey in the kitchen started early for Jennifer Velasco, kitchen manager at Tacos & Tequilas Mexican Grill. When she was 9 years old, she was tasked with feeding breakfast to the family and more than 50 employees of her parents’ company in Jalisco, Mexico. By age 19, she earned a culinary degree, and now has a job as a kitchen leader in Atlanta.
For Humble Pie’s chef Lorien Vilchez, the curiosity for flavors and cooking
styles sparked when she visited her father’s family in Peru at age 9. She decided to attend culinary school and in 2023, Chef Vilchez was promoted to executive chef, becoming one of the few Latinas with that title (outside of pastry) in the male-dominated industry.
As one of the South’s most recognized culinary personalities, Chef Deborah VanTrece explores through her dishes the large influence of the African diaspora and black food heritage on contemporary American cuisine. Vantrece owns the MICHELIN GuideRecommended Restaurant Twisted Soul Cookhouse & Pours and is the visionary behind the menu at the largest American Express Centurion Lounge at HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport.
For more than three decades, Tracy Gates, owner and head chef of MICHELIN Bib Gourmand Busy Bee has been working and leading the restaurant which was originally opened in 1947 by Lucy Jackson. Perfecting recipes, growing the community and leading the way through difficult times, Gates is a pioneer of Southern cuisine in Atlanta.

This includes big games like rivals Orlando City coming into town on March 17, Supporters Shield Winners FC Cincinnati visiting on April 20 and the 2023 Western Conference Champions Los Angeles FC on May 25. Even if you don’t go to one of the marquee games on the schedule, an Atlanta United match is always one of the most exciting events in the city and you can enjoy the action at one of the many pub partners across Atlanta.
Trae Young and the Hawks are hoping to return to the NBA Playoffs once again. With 10 home games left in the spring, they’ll need plenty of support from fans at State Farm Arena in downtown Atlanta to get back to the postseason one more time. Hispanic Heritage Night is March 10 against the Pelicans, while Women’s Empowerment Night will take place on March 25 against the Celtics. Crowning Courage Night on March 27 against the Trail Blazers will honor active and retired military personnel, while the Hawks will close out the home regular season on April 10 against the Hornets with the annual Fan Appreciation Night. Should the Hawks make the playoffs, State Farm Arena’s playoff atmosphere is one of the best in the NBA and should be experienced to be believed.
Pro hoops in Atlanta doesn’t stop with the Hawks, as Rhyne Howard and the Atlanta Dream will begin their journey to return and go deeper into the WNBA Playoffs this season. After a quick trip out West to start the season, the Dream will return to the Gateway Center Arena at College Park for the season opener on May 21 against the Dallas Wings. May 26 will see the Minnesota Lynx come to town before the marquee home game of the season happens on May 31. That’s when the back-to-back WNBA Champions Las Vegas Aces will be the visitors for what will surely be an exciting contest. It’s also a good idea to get tickets as soon as you can – the Dream had 12 home sellouts last season, which led the entire WNBA in that category.
There’s a new game in town this spring, as the Pro Volleyball Federation has its inaugural season and the Atlanta Vibe will represent our proud city. The season is already under way after the Vibe earned the win in Omaha in the first-ever game in league history but there are still plenty of opportunities to go see Leah Edmond, Tori Dilfer-Stringer and the rest of the team in action at Gas South Arena in Duluth. They will have eight home games for the rest of the season, starting on March 9 against the Las Vegas Thrill and ending with the regular season finale on May 2 against the Columbus Fury. With affordable ticket pricing, the Vibe and the PVF look to bring the excitement of volleyball to fans both new and old.
March Madness isn’t just reserved for college basketball – it also goes for the
exciting prospects who ply their trade at the Overtime Elite Arena at Atlantic Station. The basketball action involving some of the top 17-to-20-year-old hoopers from both the U.S. and abroad is reaching a fever pitch, as the semifinals for the Overtime Elite League will conclude on March 1. After that, the first two games of the OTE Finals will take place on March 7 and 8 with a potential third and deciding game taking place on March 14. With courtside seats going for just $150 and tickets otherwise being $15, it’s a great deal to watch the best ballers who could go on to be major stars in basketball in the future. There’s also OTX Overtime Boxing taking place at the arena as well, as there are three events set for March 29, April 19 and May 31, respectively.
