PEACHTREE STREET

Woodruff Park in Downtown Atlanta

The Road Paved by Peachtree Every Atlantan can think of a story about Peachtree Street, and just about every Atlantan can tell you how this street connects to his or her life. Discover your own connection to the fabled road with help from this guide.

A

tlanta is home to more than 70 streets that display the name “Peachtree,” including the most well-known, Peachtree Street. This main thoroughfare travels through Buckhead, Midtown and Downtown, connecting attractions, restaurants, shopping and neighborhoods. You won’t find many peach trees on the road, for Peachtree Street was named for a large Creek Indian settlement called Standing Pitch Tree. As the story

goes, the Creek used trees with fresh pitch, or sap from a pine tree, for solemnizing treaties. “Pitch tree” became “peach tree” to English speakers. The Peachtree Trail stretched from northeast Georgia to Standing Pitch Tree along the Chattahoochee River. Peachtree Road began in 1812 at Fort Daniel in what is now Gwinnett County, and traveled along the course of the trail to the Chattahoochee. Some areas of the present road trace this

7

route. Peachtree Street’s official boundaries are from Memorial Drive on the south side to the Gwinnett and Hall county line on the north. In between, the byway is called Peachtree Street, Road, Boulevard and Industrial Boulevard. Landmarks on this welltraveled community connector include the Westin Peachtree Plaza, 191 Peachtree Tower, Georgia-Pacific Tower and SunTrust Plaza dominating Downtown. In Midtown, find Atlanta’s tallest building, the Bank of America Plaza, plus The Fox Theatre, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and the Woodruff Arts Center. Buckhead boasts numerous luxury hotels, The Shops Buckhead Atlanta, Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza.

Located close to Downtown Atlanta, Grant Park is characterized by Victorian-style architecture, local shops and restaurants, and the fourth largest park in the city. Visitors can visit Zoo Atlanta (home of America’s only twin Giant Panda cubs), and, on the northern most tip of Grant Park, explore the 48 acres of historic Oakland Cemetery, the final resting place of Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones and Zoo Atlanta many prominent Atlantans. Trees are a signature feature of Grant Park, and whether you’re enjoying a restaurant, patio or taking a bike ride down the street, a canopy of trees keeps your experience cool. Be sure to visit during the Grant Park Summer Shade Festival in August.

LITTLE FIVE POINTS LOCATION: Approximately three miles east of Peachtree Street down Freedom Parkway. GETTING THERE: Take the MARTA Blue Line or Edgewood/Candler Park Green Line to the Inman Park/Reynoldstown exit. From there, it is a one-mile car ride to Little Five Points.

Everything about Little Five Points is Bohemian chic. Take in the music of street performers or find treasures in vintage apparel shops, eateries, vinyl stores, tattoo parlors, independent bookstores, pubs — and even a giant, 30-foot-tall skull (home of The Vortex restaurant), but this edgy artfulness pales in comparison to the people who live and work in this area. Though the main strip of Little Five is relatively compact, running mainly along Euclid Avenue and part of Moreland, it is packed with visitors and vendors. Come to Little Five and get a dose of edgy theater at 7 Stages Theatre, music at Variety Playhouse or Star Community Bar (don’t miss the Elvis shrine), and visit Horizon Theatre Company for contemporary plays.

With its Victorian homes and tree-lined streets, Inman Inman Park Park was established in 1912 as Atlanta’s first planned garden suburb. OLD FOURTH WARD LOCATION: Approximately one mile northeast from Peachtree Street in Downtown Atlanta.

There’s a lot going on in this neighborhood that has emerged as one of Atlanta’s hippest in just a few short years. Old Fourth Ward (OFW) is located in an area originally settled in the early 1800s. Visitors can see restored shotgun houses, Victorian homes and craftsman bungalows. One big asset to the area has been the proximity to Freedom Parkway and the Atlanta BeltLine, which has inspired growth and community investment. The Historic Fourth Ward Park encompasses 17 acres of new green space, a two-acre lake, playground, a splash pad, an outdoor theater, athletic field and a world-class skate park. Also in Old Fourth Ward is Ponce City Market with a food hall offering many local favorites, retail shops and Skyline Park on the roof. Venture down Edgewood Avenue for bars and other hot spots. Some of Atlanta’s top restaurants including Bon Appétit’s “2016 Restaurant of the Year,” Staplehouse, call OFW home. Nearby is the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum, hosting exhibitions and displays about the former president’s life and presidency, as well as his Ponce City Market humanitarian work.

Westside A

lso known as the Design District, the Westside is home to acclaimed restaurants, shopping and furniture and textile shops. From the Westside Provisions District to the King Plow Arts Center, the Westside is the place to shop, eat and wind down. LOCATION: The Westside is 1.8 miles west of Peachtree Street down 14th Street. GETTING THERE: Take the Red or Gold MARTA line and exit at the Arts Center station. It is a two-mile cab ride or rideshare to the area.

The Westside neighborhood has grown tremendously over the last few years. This area of town has a lively selection of urban lofts, art galleries, music venues, retail shops, restaurants and modern office space. Spanning from the southern tip of Howell Mill Road to 17th Street, much of Westside retains its loft-style industrial identity, as most of the new developments in the area have restored the once neglected factories and warehouses that date back to the 1880s. The Westside Provisions District on Howell Mill Road combines artisan tastes with industrial minimalism. Shop Westside Provisions for furniture, paper goods, breads, baby gifts and craft District ice cream. Restaurants include gourmet lunch counters, breweries and interesting cheap eats, with many chef-owned restaurants proclaimed as some of the best by the likes of Bon Appétit, Condé Nast Traveler and Esquire. One popular outdoor location is the pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks that connects the Westside Provisions District to the Westside Urban Market, featuring luxury shopping and more acclaimed restaurants. The Westside is also home to four arts centers: the Goat Farm Arts Center, Westside Cultural Arts Center, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center and King Plow Arts Center, where Actor’s Express performs. The area along Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard recently gained Bacchanalia and Star Provisions Market & Café, two loved local destinations relocated here by chefs/owners Anne Quatrano and Cliff Harrison.
