Atlanta Welcomes
Society for Neuro-Oncology | 2022 Annual Meeting November 16-20, 2022 Vince Almoina |valmoina@atlanta.net | 404.521.6634
Thank you for considering Atlanta as a potential host city for your event. Atlanta is in the midst of a development boom and over the next four years, the city will welcome $3 billion in new hospitality development including several hotels, attraction expansions and two new stadiums. Atlanta is also home to some of the nation’s leading healthcare facilities and providers, including Emory Healthcare, Piedmont Healthcare, Grady Memorial Hospital and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. These facilities provide more than 149,000 jobs to healthcare technicians and practitioners in the metro Atlanta area and are expected to grow more rapidly than any other sector in the state by 2020. Additionally, Atlanta is a hotbed for innovation and high-tech startups, with a solid base of software, biotechnology and telecommunication companies and more than 20 incubators within the city. Organizations including Georgia Research Alliance, Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University allow Atlanta to serve as an epicenter of research, testing, medical laboratories and bioscience within the state and across the nation. The pages that follow will help you navigate Atlanta’s convention and leisure offerings, including our many recent additions. For instance, the College Football Hall of Fame and Center for Civil and Human Rights serve not only as interactive attractions, but also as dynamic event spaces. The Shops Buckhead Atlanta and Ponce City Market give your attendees new and unique shopping experiences, enhancing Atlanta’s already vast retail options. Exploring Downtown is even easier for your attendees as they can now hop on the Atlanta Streetcar between or after meetings to travel from Georgia World Congress Center to hotels and attractions around Centennial Olympic Park or historic Sweet Auburn District and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. While the city will continue to grow, we’ll never outgrow our spirit of collaboration. We will continue to work with our hospitality community in tandem with meeting planners, like you, at the forefront of our efforts. We look forward to giving you and your meeting attendees one of the best convention experiences in the U.S., Southern hospitality included.
Sincerely,
William Pate
President and CEO, Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau

Executive Summary
CITY OVERVIEW Atlanta is a city on the rise. In 2014 alone, we’ve enhanced our downtown tourist appeal with the opening of three new attractions: the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the College Football Hall of Fame, and the new Atlanta Streetcar connecting the downtown convention district to the nearby Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. Combined with their already popular neighbors, Georgia Aquarium, Word of Coca-Cola, CNN Center, and the SkyView observation wheel, downtown Atlanta is one of the most unique and family friendly convention destinations in the country. In 2017 and 2020 respectively, a new billion dollar Atlanta Falcons stadium and a new 1,000-room headquarter hotel will open adjacent to and connected to the Georgia World Congress Center. Not only will these venues serve their obvious purposes, but will create a vibrant new restaurant and retail village at the front door of the convention center itself. The city’s superior hotel and convention center package is well known and will be evident in the pages of this proposal. Atlanta’s air lift remains the world #1 with 150 US destinations with non-stop flights and an additional 75 globally. Our relaxed labor environment, low hotel rates, and plentiful and affordable flights are just a few ingredients that make Atlanta an easier experience for attendees and exhibitors too. Those factors no doubt played a part in a recent KPMG study ranking Atlanta #1 lowest cost of doing business of the thirty largest US metro markets. And when you venture a little beyond the convention and tourist district, you’ll discover what’s new in some of the city’s in-town neighborhoods, which many say give Atlanta its true character and, yes, southern charm. From celebrity chefs to celebrity sightings along Peachtree Street in Midtown, to the mansions and magnolias of Buckhead. And now they are more easily accessible to convention attendees simply by walking or by streetcar or by app-based options like UberX and Lyft. Enjoy what Atlanta has to offer in the pages of this bid. We look forward to hosting SNO in 2022! ATLANTA’S NEW HEADQUARTER HOTEL The Georgia World Congress Center Authority is moving forward with plans to develop a 1,000room headquarter hotel connected to the convention center. The $200 million project will be constructed on the site of the existing Georgia Dome when it is demolished in 2017 concurrent to the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Although exact specifications are not yet known, initial plans call for connectivity of its meeting and function space with the existing space in Buildings B & C of the Georgia World Congress Center. It will be situated adjacent to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, connected to the convention center and within easy walking distance of other venues like the College Football Hall of Fame, Georgia Aquarium and Centennial Olympic Park.
GWCC enhancements include a new glass façade skin, mirroring the look of the new hotel and stadium nearby.
The new hotel will be ideally situated connected to the GWCC and adjacent to the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The new HQ Hotel marks the seventh major convention hotel in downtown Atlanta (six of 1,000+ rooms) representing all major hotel brands.

The Atlanta Streetcar at Centennial Olympic Park
Plan on Atlanta and a great meeting is just steps away. Once you land at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, hop on a MARTA train for a 15-minute ride into Atlanta’s convention and entertainment district Downtown. From accommodations and attractions to dining and nightlife, you’ll find everything within steps of your meeting. Our walkable district includes event space and a flexible hotel portfolio to host any size meeting. At 3.9 million square feet with 1.4 million square feet of prime exhibit space, Atlanta boasts the fourth-largest convention center in the U.S. — the Georgia World Congress Center. Also find the Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart, as well as Southern Exchange at 200 Peachtree. Top attractions like the World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium and CNN Center double as unique event facilities. More than 11,700 rooms housed in 32 hotels downtown make it easy for attendees to walk from their hotel right into the meeting. Two-thirds of these rooms are in six hotels — Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Hilton Atlanta, Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center, Sheraton Atlanta and The Westin Peachtree Plaza — providing planners with the room blocks and event space that sizable meetings require. Three of these hotels are connected via a sky bridge, making movement between them seamless. For more in-house options, Atlanta has a growing selection of boutique and luxury hotels. The area offers more than 300 dining options that create a delicious experience. Attendees can catch a concert or host an event at the Tabernacle, Georgia Dome and Philips Arena (or catch a game at the Dome or Philips), or take a spin on SkyView Atlanta for spectacular city views. Whether seeking attractions, culture or nightlife in the Centennial Park District, attendees will become a part of the energy that makes Atlanta a thriving city. Several Atlanta attractions have opened in recent years. The Atlanta Streetcar connects visitors to the city’s top sites, as well as the College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience and Center for Civil and Human Rights expand the city’s range of meeting options.

DINING IN ATLANTA In Atlanta, our award-winning dining scene is reinventing Southern style with locally-sourced menus and down home inspiration. Atlanta chefs serve up dishes from the new kitchen of the Old South blending culinary diversity with creative cuisines and unique décor to satisfy every craving. Eateries opening in Atlanta cater to the neighborhood, providing a warm welcome and inviting ambiance to invoke the feeling of dining at a friend’s house, rather than a restaurant.
ATLANTA’S DINING SCENE BRINGS HIGH-END DOWN-HOME Dining is one of the most popular pastimes for visitors and locals alike in Atlanta, and for good reason. Atlanta boasts everything from upscale gourmet cuisine to progressive variations of Southern staples and local, chef-driven restaurants. But Atlanta’s dining story isn’t typical of Southern cities. What makes Atlanta’s dining scene special is its variety. Atlanta restaurants are relaxed and welcome diners with open arms. Eateries in Atlanta cater to each unique neighborhood and invoke the feeling of dining at a friend’s house, rather than a restaurant. Even the city’s most high-end restaurants dish out a down-home feel. Atlanta’s chefs incorporate fresh, local ingredients to serve up the best in New South cuisine with creative twists on Grandma’s traditional Southern meals. One of Atlanta’s finest examples of the farm-to-table experience is One Eared Stag where chef Robert Phalen dishes out freshly picked and prepared food. Dig into some chow chow at Empire State South, take a bite of the pickled vegetables at Miller Union and sample deviled eggs with country ham at JCT. Kitchen & Bar. USA Today voted South City Kitchen’s fried chicken among the South’s very best, though versions at The Shed at Glenwood and Watershed on Peachtree also rank highly among locals. Atlanta’s epicurean markets have a history of launching careers of local restauranteurs. Sweet Auburn Curb Market, Atlanta’s oldest public market, gave a home to businesses like Grindhouse Killer Burgers and Bell Street Burritos before they grew to occupy their own storefronts. Today, new epicurean markets serve as a gathering place for locals and visitors, as an incubator for new innovators and entrepreneurs, and as a showcase for established local chefs. Prominently located along the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail, Ponce City Market is a culinary hub connecting Atlanta’s most popular intown neighborhoods. Its Central Food Hall includes stalls from some of Atlanta’s popular James Beard Award-winning chefs including Anne Quatrano and Linton Hopkins. Krog Street Market is housed in a 1920s warehouse in Inman Park with stalls that sell fresh meats, produce and prepared food alongside Southern-grown restaurants and retailers. Across the street, Irwin Street Market is a community of artisan food-based businesses all located under one roof.

Atlanta’s upscale Buckhead neighborhood is longestablished as the destination for fashionistas. Along less than two miles on Peachtree Road, Buckhead boasts three high-end shopping complexes, earning the nickname of the “Rodeo Drive of the South.” Lenox Square opened in 1959, beginning Buckhead’s shopping story. The mall has remained one of the most popular shopping destinations in the city and recently completed a large-scale upgrade with new retail including a two-story Nike store, UGG Australia, Karen Millen and Vincent Camuto. Across from Lenox Square, sits Phipps Plaza. Phipps offers upscale shopping with more than 100 stores, including Tiffany & Co., Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Versace and Valentino. Now, a new development cements the neighborhood’s title of “Beverly Hills of the East.” The Shops Buckhead Atlanta, a new shopping district, is upping the neighborhood’s luxury game. Visitors now have access to first-to-market restaurants such as Southern Gentleman, Gypsy Kitchen and Le Bilboquet, and luxury designers like Hermès, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Bonobos and Canali, among many others. first-to-market restaurants such as Southern Gentleman, Gypsy Kitchen and Le Bilboquet, and luxury designers like Hermès, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Bonobos and Canali, among many others.
