This peaceful retreat was created on a barely used backyard slope. Random flat stones and small boulders were used to mimic a natural streambed with a hidden pump to recycle water from the pond below back to the top of the slope. Spreading, flowering perennials, like Iris and Canna Lily, were planted and allowed to grow into each other and up to the waterfall to soften its look. Add a bright blue Adirondack chair as a destination and you now have a garden â&#x20AC;&#x153;aha!â&#x20AC;? moment.

What’s Hot in Pools and Spas in 2017 “Spools” These water features are much smaller than traditional swimming pools, but are longer than the usual spa. Southern landscapes, but their bountiful shade can hinder the growth of most turf grass. TifTuf has been grown under shade conditions, doing very well under high pine shade (equates to 50 percent shade or “partial” shade) as long as it gets at least five hours of direct sun. Being a Bermudagrass, it will always thrive when exposed to direct sun, all day long. One of the struggles with switching to a new turf is the initial maintenance with getting the sod to take root. TifTuf has been tested in real world installations and during the high heat and drought of late summer-fall 2016, when irrigation systems couldn’t possibly keep up with the environmental challenges, many new TifTuf lawns were laid around Atlanta. In that real-life test, TifTuf shone as a game-changer as a successful, lowwater use lawn. With TifTuf, what seasons can I expect rich, green-colored grass? A: TifTuf is the lawn that stays greener longer. It stays greener during a drought, it stays greener longer into the fall (withstanding some frost), and it greens up earlier in the spring than other warm season lawns, including other types of Bermudagrass. An owner can expect to have well over half a year of green grass; in the Atlanta area, that equates to April through November.

I’ve had problems with unhealthy sod in the past. How can I ensure I am getting the best product? A: Make sure you purchase “Certified Turfgrasses” from a sod grower. Certified Turfgrass types have a documented history and pedigree, they have ensured purity in production and harvesting, and they are grown and inspected under strict rules and guidelines. TifTuf Bermudagrass is grown only under Certified conditions and the sod farm can provide paperwork to prove it. The Georgia Crop Improvement Association (www. certifiedseed.org) monitors all these aspects of Certified Turfgrass.

How can I use my water most efficiently when irrigating my turfgrass? A: Reducing disease is also an important aspect to plan for when setting your irrigation timer. Watering your lawn only in the early morning (before sunrise) facilitates efficient use of water— allowing water to soak into the ground and be absorbed by roots while reducing the risk of water loss due to evaporation in the heat of the day. Plus, morning watering allows the grass leaf blades to air dry during the day, reducing the risk of lawn diseases from moisture remaining on the lawn overnight.
