On the cover: When it came time to replace a Roswell homeowner’s aging deck, Peachtree Porches & Decks in Alpharetta used advanced building techniques and materials to create a sophisticated replacement to match the existing pool and hardscape. The new deck features a grout-free slatetile floor adhered to an underlying fiberglass grid system, which helps prevent water damage by capturing and funneling water away from the deck. PVC trimboard was applied to custom-built columns and arches for added durability. Photo courtesy of Peachtree Porches & Decks. www.peachtreedecks.com. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

editor’sletter Getting Warmed Up As the new magazine and social media editorial director at Atlanta Home Improvement, I am excited to make my formal debut in this May issue. In addition to overseeing the magazine’s print content, I will

Frameless Shower Enclosures

also be managing our social media presence through the new Atlanta Home Improvement blog, Facebook page and Twitter account in an effort to connect with readers and local home improvement professionals in new and relevant ways. If you are on any of these sites, be sure to leave us a comment; “like” and “follow” us; and share our news, tips, trends and resources with your own online network. You can even do so from the comfort of your own backyard retreat, as our patios, porches and decks special section reveals. In “The New Outdoor Lifestyle” on p. 23, we discuss the trend toward tech-savvy outdoor living spaces, which deliver all the features of the very best home entertainment systems—under the stars. Backyard not quite the retreat it could be? Start from the ground up with ideas from our outdoor living space transformations on page 46 and deck-building tips from our Bob and RodMan Home Show columnists on page 60. Be sure to include outdoor lighting in your plans as well with our guide on page 56. Inside the house, it’s time to get organized. On page 38, we suggest tackling the spaces that attract the most clutter: the garage, kitchen, closet and home office. Whether your goal is being able to find things when you need them or giving your home a more tidy look, you can experience a more productive and satisfying life by addressing the organizational issues in each room.

concrete or asphalt surface. Gulf Synthetics announced the expansion of its Coatings Division with the release of its new residential products in February. The company also debuted PermaPaint, which turns any interior or exterior latex paint into a long-lasting protective coating, and manufactures commercial coatings and composite and vinyl sheet siding. DeckRevive, ConcreteRevive and PermaPaint are available at retailers throughout the Atlanta area as well as on the Gulf Synthetics website at www.gulfsynthetics.com/shop.

Local Concrete Company Makes Level Decision After founding B-Level Concrete and serving as owner of the company for the past 12 years, Bob Montbach retired at the end March. Now, Michael Cangemi, who has been with B-Level for the past five years, has assumed the position as owner. “Michael is a very ethical person,” Montbach says. “He has a firm grasp of the business, both in regard to business operations and products, and he’s very customer service-oriented. He doesn’t walk on water.” B-Level specializes in residential and commercial concrete products and services and is located in Acworth. • Understand how the system works.

• Is there built-in obstruction to the water flow such as fan mounts or support brackets? • Does the system adjust to accommodate a possible sag in the deck floor above? • Can a particular panel be removed without disturbing adjacent panels? • Is the system 100% aluminum? Steel systems may rust at the cut edges. Vinyl systems may become brittle and distort with age and are derived from petroleum. • See the system installed. • Know who you’re dealing with. • Make a visit to their facility.

Outdoor living spaces have become as high-tech as your all-American family room. Theater systems, outdoor kitchens, Internet connectivity and state-of-the-art security features have taken the backyard patio to a whole new level. The reasons for this popularity spike are many. For some, improving their home is a way of life. Once they have turned their attention from the indoors out, homeowners want the newest and best features, of which advances in technology have provided numerous options. For others, the time when they could jump on an airplane to some luxurious locale is long gone. So instead, they seek to create that vacation type of atmosphere in their backyards. Yet, maybe the most common reason behind the popularity of these high-tech outdoor living spaces is pretty simple. “People are tending to stay closer to home for their entertainment,” says David Walker of Magnolia Outdoor Living in Atlanta. “A dollar spent on comfort and usability for an outdoor entertainment area gives long-term rewards. An investment in home entertainment lasts for years.”

Illuminating Ideas Photo courtesy of Selective Designs

Creating a fun and interactive outdoor space where homeowners can entertain all of their friends is the goal now. People want to gather and mingle with one another not only online but also offline, whether it’s a lunchtime barbecue or a late-night swimming party. “People spend plenty of time inside due to work or the routine requirements that having a family demands,” says Bobby Parks, owner of Peachtree Decks and Porches in Alpharetta. “Time spent outside can be time away from all the headaches and stress that come with life in today’s world. People can slow down, regain their composure and find themselves, at least for a given period of time.” Undoubtedly, the chance to create an entertainment oasis just a few steps from the back door is enticing. And luckily, transforming outdoor spaces to true living spaces can be done virtually within any budget thanks to an increasing number of outdoor living options.

So, you’re ready to buy a fire pit for the patio, a new grill to sit just outside the back door and the biggest television known to man to set up just beyond the pool. But what happens when it gets dark, and you can’t see any of these elements very well? Once again, manufacturers have answered the call, offering lighting features that will help illuminate every homeowner’s outdoor living space, no matter how late the party lasts. One example is TimberTech’s DeckLites, a low-voltage system built into the railing that offers a clean look while effectively increasing safety.

Get Support

Photo courtesy of Leisure Time Decks

Tune in—outside Once upon a time, there was one centralized TV that the entire family would gather around. Now, TVs not only can be found in the family room, but also in the kitchen, the bedroom and, yes, the outdoor patio. And when it comes to televisions, it seems that bigger is always better. “Many people want to watch their favorite sporting events or TV shows outside and still enjoy grilling outside as well,” says Frank Pologruto, president of Decks & More in Smyrna. “We’re truly seeing a tremendous move to the total outdoor living space.” Several local contractors say that 80 to 85 percent of the jobs they take on now are wired for flat-panel TVs and satellite radio. “The majority of our decks today incorporate a TV, whereas just a few years ago, only about half did,” says Dave Bielicki, president of DecksAtlanta in Cumming. More and more outdoor-rated LCD flat-screen televisions by a number of high-end manufacturers are coming out in the marketplace. Projection screens can also be installed to come down from the soffit of the home. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

0511_022-035_Decks_PatiosSS.indd29 29

Inspired to build a deck that holds all of your new outdoor toys? Be careful. Some of the most high-tech components of an outdoor living space can also be the heaviest. When using a deck area, you must begin with a safe and solid substructure that will withstand the weight of everything from stone countertops to oversized grills. Also, make sure to consult with a licensed contractor who is familiar with local building codes. The severity of your climate will determine how deep support materials need to be buried into the ground, as well as the best types of materials to use during the building process.

Hidden projectors can be tucked away in a compartment on the patio. Want something a bit more portable? Inflatable projector screens can now actually offer a high-quality image.

Stir it up Grills aren’t just for cooking hot dogs and hamburgers anymore. As the gourmetcooking trend continues to rise in popularity, the outdoor kitchen plays a vital role in meals—especially when entertaining guests. And to keep from spending the entire evening running back and forth into the kitchen to get the ketchup or spices, outdoor cabinetry and appliances have now found a home in any corner of the patio. Weatherproof-but-luxurious cabinets, sinks, refrigerators and, of course, the grill can come together on spectacular cooking islands. “The latest in outdoor kitchens is the large ‘Mac-Daddy’ grills,” Pologruto says. “It always seems that every year the manufacturers are adding or improving the latest model.

In Control You find yourself outside, under the stars, sipping a fruity drink through a straw. And while you may have reached the ultimate level of relaxation, chances are that the last thing you want to do is get up out of your chair to change the channel or turn off the fan. Manufacturers feel your pain and have come up with a number of options in universal remote controls that can serve as a hub for turning on and off all electronics that have remote capabilities, including outdoor lighting.

Creating your space Certainly, equipping your outdoor space with all of this high-tech “stuff” requires, well, … space. “The first things I ask a potential customer are: ‘How do you entertain? For how many people at a time? What are your interests, and what style do you like?’” says Lou Biasi, office manager of Decks & Porches Unlimited in Buford. Most of the time, the answers lead to a larger deck or porch. “The trend in decks is expansion, creative design, increased functionality and use of alternate materials,” Bielicki says. “Decks are larger and designed as part of the overall backyard space by creating circulation to a pool, spa or other high-traffic areas of the yard. If a deck is high enough to walk under, the space below the deck is being finished with pavers or concrete and a dry below system with fans. This creates a second outdoor space and doubles the function of the deck.” Building a high-tech outdoor living area also requires money. Although with so much to choose from, it might not be as much as you might think. “Along with electronic gear becoming more portable and rugged, there are advances in composite deck

Photo courtesy of RainAway Deck Drain Systems

materials,” Walker says. “Faux finishes are making concrete floors more attractive. Pressure-treated lumber is less toxic than it was just a few years ago. Screening can be far more durable and attractive with newer materials. Under-deck ceilings are advancing in design and ease of installation.” Looking to protect all of your outdoor gadgets? Check out the many lines of motorized and remote-control sun-shading screens. With the touch of a button, you can transform a high-tech outdoor living area into an enclosed patio to protect against both the sun and nature’s lovable but pesky creatures. Under-deck ceilings also offer excellent protection.

To prevent water from penetrating underdeck ceilings, RainAway Deck Drain Systems in Marietta applies an industrial-grade silicon sealer to the area where the gutter meets the house. Strategic placement of electronics also helps prevent weather-related damage. “Put [the TV] in a corner where rain can’t blow in from the side, and protect it with a case,” says RainaAway’s Jeff Butler. You should also make sure that any equipment you decide to use in your outdoor space is made specifically to withstand the elements. Indoor products are designed much differently than outdoor products—and you should know the difference. Look for products that are specifically rated for the outdoors, and consider how you’ll keep them safe. “We build weather-resistant cabinets that fold around the TV and lock for security,” Bielicki says. “We integrate the cabinet design with the deck for a seamless flow.” For another option, Pologruto recommends keeping the flexible cover that comes with the TV and slipping it on when not in use for added protection and to keep the unit out of sight. In a housing market that is keeping more and more people in their homes longer than they had planned, outdoor living areas offer yet another inspirational space to transform and use to its full extent. The possibilities are endless. You’ll never look at your backyard the same way again.

home office

With increasingly mobile lifestyles, home offices are becoming centers for managing both personal and professional tasks and files. The key to making a home office work is paring down the workspace. “Your desk area should have the primary things that you use only,” says Christina Gunbay, owner of Uber Organizing in Atlanta. “Secondary or tertiary things should be in a nearby closet.” Christina recommends staying away from horizontal filing trays that serve little function and take up too much surface area on a desk. Instead, mount a vertical paper tray on an adjacent wall. To minimize paper storage, Christina says, take advantage of electronic record-keeping for bank statements, digital photos and more. For hard copies, stick to one file drawer built into a desk, if possible and acid-free plastic containers for photo archives organized by event and/or date. In addition, Christina gives the new Apple iPad rave reviews for productivity and mobility. “This is undoubtedly my favorite organizing tool!,” Christina says. “There are so many applications for every use imaginable.”

One of the biggest challenges in organizing a garage is accommodating the mix of odd-shaped items that most often ends up here such as kayaks or canoes, artificial Christmas trees and camping gear. The solution, according to Ken Lundin, owner of Space Envy in Norcross, is to use wall, ceiling and cabinet space to keep these items off the floor and still easy to access when needed. Lundin recommends installing wall-mounted racks to organize yard tools, bicycles and sports equipment; ceiling lifts to store a kayak or large car-top luggage carrier; and built-in cabinetry for seasonal items, coolers, paints and other chemicals and even shoes. Organizing even just one problem area in your home can result in some great benefits, including increased productivity and punctuality, reduced

s spring descends on the South in a vibrant burst of color, there’s no better time to shed the winter blues and head outside. But, if your yard is unsightly and devoid of life, the invigorating sights and sounds of spring may be hard to imagine. If your yard falls in this category, consider transforming

it from drab to dazzling with an outdoor makeover. Several readers asked us how to overcome common backyard problems, and local landscapers responded with examples of projects they created that showcase amazing outdoor living spaces with personality and pizazz. 46

A. Living on a picturesque piece of property is every homeowner’s dream, but for those distinct few who reside waterside, the visual joys are often boundless. Harnessing that raw beauty and incorporating its eye-catching appeal in your own property is a delicate task that requires a certain finesse. Embracing such a makeover for a home in Flowery Branch, Innovative Outdoors was careful to complement the homeowners’ view with the details of the design. With a double lot—the

adjoining land had recently been purchased and was virtually untouched dirt and gravel— the homeowners wanted to claim the space for family entertaining. Envisioning a pool, covered patio area, fireplace and additional storage space, they wanted their makeover to look natural and cohesive. “Our main goal was to come up with a unique way to incorporate all the features they desired while complementing the natural setting,” says Thomas Boyce, owner of Innovative Outdoors. “We looked at the landscape’s potential and decided to tackle it from different vantage points.” Although the site required extensive grading, Boyce used the existing hill to tuck the pool into the landscape. Using natural stone, such as fieldstone and Tennessee stacked stone, Boyce created retaining walls and the outdoor fireplace. The patio structure and its cupola were constructed of cedar and highlighted with native plants such as azaleas. Finishing the makeover with specific details, such as a large boulder for diving into the pool, the company also incorporated expansive green spaces for outdoor play. “With outdoor living, it’s important to understand your options and make sure they work with the aesthetics of the space,” Boyce says. “These homeowners spent a significant amount of time planning and discussing how they wanted to use their yard. In the end, they got exactly what they wanted: a beautiful panorama punctuated by an appealing and functional living space.”

One of the most appealing aspects of a mature neighborhood is the prevalence of large trees and landscaping. However, one noted downfall is the tendency toward overgrowth. Taming such a calamity can be daunting, but with the right vision, your yard can be transformed into a well-manicured space.

Q

We purchased a home in an established neighborhood, with a large, sloped backyard. Initially we were drawn to the mature trees and untouched green space, but now we want to tame our overgrown backyard. Will our steep slope and drainage problems prevent us from achieving our goal?

Tackling such a project, Crawford Landscaping took an overgrown backyard in East Cobb and reinvented it. Although the yard required extensive grading and a solution to drainage issues, the company was able to easily solve both problems. Diverting the water to a dry creek bed and using the dirt dug from the pool site to create a level surface, they began installing distinct entertainment areas. Playing off the home’s natural setting, Christian Crawford, owner of Crawford Landscaping, only used those materials that would enhance the site’s raw beauty. Flagstone, Tennessee river rock and large boulders found onsite give the makeover an organic feel and help keep the budget in check. Creating a focal point, Crawford designed an amorphous pool bordered by flagstone. “The homeowners wanted many new elements in their backyard,” he says. “Among the most important were a pool, a screened-in porch that could be enjoyed year-round and a casual fire pit. We tied in each of these elements by using like materials that complemented the setting.” Adding two tiered patios, a deck and a garden shed as well, Crawford’s crew was careful to spare the mature oaks dotting the landscape. Although many trees had to be removed to accommodate the entertainment areas and clean up the jungle-like overgrowth, flowering trees, shrubs and plants were added for visual appeal. “In the end, we transformed this one-acre space, in which only a quarter was initially usable, into a lush backyard playground,” Crawford says. “In the spring and summer, the homeowners are greeted with a bold array of color and a repurposed yard perfect for entertaining.”

When that plan goes awry, they’re often left wondering what their options include. Miller Landscape recently encountered a client with this particular dilemma. Their large, stately

home in Sandy Springs was lovely, but the yard was beyond desirable. Sketching an idea that included a rectangular lap pool surrounded by stone decking, the design eliminated the need for a traditional yard. “From a design standpoint, the layout was pretty simple, but it accomplished everything the homeowners wanted and needed,” says Britany Miller Heater, director of marketing and sales at Miller Landscape. “They didn’t want anything too big or elaborate; instead, they wanted a classic, clean and functional space that incorporated sentimental elements.” Installing a fountain and planting trees around it that were given to the homeowners by their grown children personalized the space and created that sentimental link. Large stucco planters for gardening were also added and raised to an easily accessible height for the homeowners. Finishing the intimate design with decorative black fencing added a necessary boundary in shiny detail. “One of our favorite aspects of this design was the number of sentimental additions that were incorporated,” Heater says. “These personalized spaces provided them with a unique alternative to the traditional backyard, transforming their home from ordinary residence to a manicured estate.”

A.This is a typical concern for many homeowners. A walk-out basement is an ideal setup for accessing the backyard. However, this area is often overlooked as a viable living space. Small and devoid of direct sunlight, mold, dirt and debris can quickly accumulate. Faced with this situation, one Cobb County family decided to tackle their patio and reclaim it for

outdoor use. Enlisting Outside Landscape Group, the homeowners envisioned a clean, sophisticated patio with a sitting area and an outdoor kitchen. “When we began, the space was bland and unusable, but it was quickly transformed into a cozy nook perfect for hosting a backyard barbecue,” says Rick Kaldrovics, owner of Outside Landscape Group. Removing the existing wood decking and backfilling the area to alleviate the grade change, the landscapers began by pouring two colored-concrete patios separated by mortared stone steps. Creating a line of demarcation, the steps, which are actually large boulders set into the concrete, were chosen for their rustic and budget-conscious appeal. Crab-orchard stone delineates the border and is the same material used for the bar and countertops. “To add interest, we changed up the stone in the face of the bar, creating smooth arches that showcase its wide range of hues,” Kaldrovics says. Adding another texture, the homeowners opted for tongue-and-groove cedar doors for the cabinetry instead of the typical stainless steel. Finishing the kitchen with a gas grill, double burners and a sink, the space has the right amenities for outdoor entertaining. Covering the second patio with a simple shed roof provides shelter and creates an inviting space for casual conversation. Finally, colorful landscaping adds a touch of personality. “Although the landscaping wasn’t the homeowners’ primary goal, it was a way to pull the entire design together,” Kaldrovics says. “In the end, they transformed a drab, unappealing area into a functional, inviting space that gives them the incentive to entertain often.”

A: Gardening is one of those hobbies that soothes the soul and delights the senses. From large, manicured spaces to eclectic patches full of variety, a backyard garden can accommodate any enthusiast’s desires. Encountering a seasoned gardener with a narrow, yet deeply sloped yard in Midtown, Susan

Q

Gardening is my passion, but my backyard is overrun with rocks and steeply sloped from front-to-back and side-to-side. How can I create an interesting design that highlights my hobby and is eco-conscious, while contending with the slope?

Gworek, owner of Garden Wonders, detailed a plan that incorporated the site’s existing materials. “The previous homeowners installed a new driveway, but instead of discarding the old, broken concrete, they tossed it in the yard,” she says. “With so much material on site, we decided to use it to create a retaining wall to support a large, level terrace. Doing this helped us reclaim an 8-foot by 30-foot area of previously unusable backyard.” Giving the appearance of stacked stone, Gworek was nearly able to complete the 70-footlong retaining wall with the found concrete. Supplementing it with natural boulders, the concrete was repurposed and spared from a landfill. During this stage of the design, Gworek also was careful to work around an existing coral bark Japanese maple—a desired focal point for the homeowner—which is perched just above the retaining wall. Behind the maple, a circular crab-orchard flagstone patio provides the perfect foil to the existing deck’s angular form. Creating another angular juxtaposition are large stepping stones that form paths around the property. Creeping jenny and ajuga fill in the spaces between the stones and provide a lush groundcover, while potted hemlock, knockout roses and a purple smoke tree border the terrace. “Plenty of room was left for the homeowner to add to her growing garden,” Gworek explains. “She also enjoys filling her pots with perennials, annuals and bulbs and shifting them around the terrace as the spirit moves her.”

Innovations in Home Security

control even more

Security systems can do more than keep you safe BY KALI JUSTUS AND KAITLIN KREMER

While the purpose of security systems is to prevent breakins and property loss, new technologies take home surveillance to the next level. Now users can monitor as well as interact with their homes from anywhere at any time. “The days of being just a burglar alarm are in the past,” says Jim Callahan, president of Ackerman Security Systems. “Today’s systems report on emergencies and all other facets of home life as well.” Virtual Keypads Virtual keypads allow users to receive and respond to text or e-mail alerts from a home security system with the Internet-enabled device of their Photo courtesy of www.honeywell.com choice. “Additionally, we can send information that is now lifestyleoriented without necessarily having to involve the authorities,” Callahan says. “We can notify a homeowner if a liquor or gun cabinet has been opened or if a water leak has been detected in a primary or secondary residence.”

For added convenience, home automation systems offer control of new and existing security systems as well as other home features on one interface. Imagine controlling home security systems, thermostats, appliances, lighting and more with your iPhone or an easy-to-use touchscreen panel in your home. Such systems allow users to dim the lights, adjust the heating or air conditioning and turn on a favorite playlist at the touch of a button.

Security Cameras

________________________

Residential security cameras offer new functions that can help users monitor their homes while away. Now security cameras can record a video clip when your security system is activated and save for viewing later. Make sure the kids get home from school safely. Verify that the contractor working on your house is doing what is being asked. Then, rest easy knowing all is well.

Wireless Monitoring Another security system feature that is gaining popularity is wireless monitoring, which makes receivers easier to place inconspicuously around the house and allows remote access via the Internet. “More people seem to be disconnecting their land lines, so wireless monitoring allows for alarm signals to be received in the central station as well as non-alarm related activity,” Callahan says. Wireless security systems also prevent burglars from gaining entry into a home by cutting land-line cords to deactivate the security system. 54

Lighting for Outdoor Living Extend the comfort of your home to outdoor living areas BY KATHY KIDWELL

You’ve bought the patio furniture, accessorized your pergola and even added a small fire pit for late-night marshmallow roasting. But aside from some tiki torches and the security spotlight by your patio door, you’re in the dark about lighting your outdoor living space. Not to worry! The following tips will enlighten you—literally. You’ve got to hide your light away Since ambient brightness is low at night, visible light sources often can create glare that causes discomfort and reduces Photo courtesy of The Outdoor Lights Inc., visibility, explains Will Lewis, www.theoutdoorlights.com IALD, MIES, LC, principal of Lewis Lighting Design and representative of the International Association of Lighting Design (www.iald.org). Because of this, Lewis says, “Concealed lights that illuminate surfaces are my favorite types of lighting to use outdoors. A soft glow on the patio from a light concealed in a stone wall or wooden post can go a long way toward setting the mood of a space.” Moonlighting “When lighting an outdoor living space, you are trying to create an environment,” says Joe Zamore with LED Source (www.ledsource.com). To achieve this, Zamore recommends installing an LED light high in a tree, casting tree-branch silhouettes on the ground and providing enough general lighting for the area. “We might then add a layer of lighting that provides accents on foliage to create a visual boundary that gives the space some definition,” he adds. Inspiring ideas Tom Nash, lighting specialist with Sea Gull Lighting Inc. (www.seagulllighting.com), offers the following ideas for illuminating your outdoor spaces: • Light the way with subtle path lights for a safe yet soothing stroll. • For outdoor kitchens, consider stylish, low-voltage fixtures to light the cooking areas. A flush-mount adapter allows you to plug in several varieties of fixtures and, when not in use, the lights can be unplugged and conveniently stored. • Consider outfitting your deck with small lights that fit under handrails or steps, or lights that mount to posts or pillars, adding visual drama and an element of safety. • Showcase gardens with area lights or well lights around shrubs to create artistic flair and add dimension. • Capture the beauty of waterscapes with underwater lights that will keep you mesmerized long into the night. 56

solar smarts Solar lights run on free sunshine, so they cost zero in electricity. They’re affordable, and because they involve no wires or plugs, they are easy to install. parrr-tay! A pretty option for outdoor lighting— and a really cost-effective way of “lightscaping”—is to use strings of Chinese lanterns or “party lights.” Candles and torches can be used for interesting ambient lighting. However, [you should] add up the cost of candles and fuel for your torches over a summer [to see if] you might be wiser to invest in outdoor electric lighting. —From “Outdoor Lighting: Creating the Perfect Landscape” by Tom Kraeutler for The Money Pit, www.moneypit.com

may Tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden BY MARY KAY WOODWORTH

Time for celebrations—Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, graduation and summer are just a few reasons to rejoice! Plant a perennial shrub or tree to honor or remember your loved ones this month. ‘Knock Out’ rose is a beautiful, continuous blooming, trouble-free shrub-type rose that will be enjoyed year after year. Potted miniature roses, lilies, hydrangeas and azaleas also make extra-long-lasting gifts if you plant them in the garden after they have finished blooming indoors. Garden Maintenance

➤ Now that evening temperatures are consistently warm, you can move your indoor plants outside for the summer. Acclimate them by placing them outdoors for brief periods, gradually increasing the time over a period of several days or even a week.

➤ Do you see shiny trails on the petals and leaves of your ornamentals in the morning? If so, slugs are on the prowl at night—Capture them by placing grapefruit-rind halves among your plants. Position rinds with the peel-side up, and slugs will collect underneath. CHRYSANTHEMUMS will flourish in the

fall if pinched now.

➤ Lawns maintained at the correct height are less likely to have disease and weed infestation. Recommended heights: tall fescue—2-3”, centipede—1-1 ½”, Bermuda and zoysia— ½ -1 ½”. Mow frequently, removing no more than

one-third of the blade at each cutting and “grasscycle—Allow grass clippings to remain on the lawn. The clippings decompose rapidly and add valuable nutrients to the soil.

fall.

➤ Petunias, salvia and other annuals will bloom beautifully with a few timely pinches: Pinch at planting time and again the fi rst or second week of July to 3-4 above ground. Feed annuals monthly with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Be sure to deadhead for maximum flowers. What to Plant

➤ This is a good month to plant heat-loving herbs like basil and dill. Harvest most herbs before flower buds open for best flavor.

➤ It’s safe to plant hot weather vegetables such as beans, sweet corn, melons, squash and sweet potatoes now. Mulch and water after planting.

➤ For best results, wait until late May or June to sod warm-season lawns. Apply a second application of fertilizer to warm-season grasses (Bermuda, zoysia and centipede.)

➤ The ground will be warm enough by mid-May for caladiums, dahlias, gladiolus and cannas. If you stagger the planting of gladiolus, you’ll enjoy a longer show of flowers.

➤ You can achieve vertical impact in your garden with annual vines such as moonflower, hyacinth bean and scarlet runnerbean. Plant seeds near a fence or trellis— Moonflower is striking when flowers open after dark!

➤ Protect newly transplanted vegetable plants from cutworms by constructing collars for them. Cut 2-by8-inch strips of cardboard, staple into circles and place around the plants. Push the collar about 1 inch into the soil—The plants’ stems will be protected from cutworm damage by these mini “fences.

A little bit of overbuilding at the time of construction will pay handsome dividends in the long run. Start from the ground up. Set the deck posts on poured concrete footings, not in the ground. OK, if you can buy or specify “ground contact” pressuretreated material, you certainly should. But you don’t have to put it in the ground. Poured concrete footings provide a larger bearing surface to support the deck weight; They will be more durable than buried posts, and, with a slightly domed top and proper post brackets, the concrete footings will allow water to drain away from the vulnerable cut-end of the deck support posts.

Railing systems that are bolted to the primary support posts will probably satisfy minimal code strength requirements when first installed, but the attachment system is unavoidably weakened over time by weathering at the mortises and bolt homes. Make the primary support posts long enough to carry the railings, and that kind of weak spot is removed. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

and joists and are held tight with a washer and nut. Make the same choice for the bolts that secure the deck to the rim-sill of the home. Lag bolts are often used but do not provide near the security of the through-bolt application. Lag bolts are essentially fat screws with hex heads; You are counting on the screw threads to keep you safe. Invading moisture can compromise that attachment.

AFTER

Opt for a deck-board attachment that allows the deck boards to be fixed to the joists from underneath. Look at the “Deckmaster” system for an example. While you’re at it, check out some of the modern synthetic/recycled deck boards: no cupping, durable and attractive. Both

Monumental makeovers Readers reclaim their yards with outdoor-living, space overhauls. By Tara N. Wilfong

Our lot backs up to a lake, providing us with gorgeous views from our home. With an active family, we’d like to incorporate a functional, yet fun, outdoor living space that won’t detract from our view. Any suggestions?

A. Living on a picturesque piece of property is every homeowner’s dream, but for those

One of the most appealing aspects of a mature neighborhood is the prevalence of large trees and landscaping. However, one noted downfall is the tendency toward overgrowth. Taming such a calamity can be daunting, but with the right vision, your yard can be transformed into a well-manicured space.

A: Tackling such a project, Crawford Landscaping took an overgrown backyard in East Cobb

and reinvented it. Although the yard required extensive grading and a solution to drainage

issues, the company was able to easily solve both problems. Diverting the water to a dry creek bed and using the dirt dug from the pool site to create a level surface, they began installing distinct entertainment areas.

The couple who owns this Roswell home wanted a new sunroom that would offer a view of their backyard along with a maintenance-free patio. Their requirements included energyefficient and green-building practices, natural daylighting and a look that blended with the existing architectural style of the home. The team at MOSAIC Group [Architects and Remodelers] set to work, incorporating green-construction processes that included high-quality and energy-efficient windows; Icynene spray-foam insulation that was applied to the walls, roof, crawl space and non-vented crawl space; solar water heater; raincollection barrel; low-VOC paints; and a separate high-efficiency HVAC system to condition the new space. The end result is a new environmentally friendly space that offers a great view and is also eligible for federal tax credits.
