designer and contractor for HGTV’s Elbow Room, for our October cover, we hoped we could magically connect the features in this issue, the Fall Atlanta Home Show coverage, plus our articles on flooring trends and interior paint. When Chip shared his project, I felt we had hit the jackpot. Chip’s enthusiasm for design and details is infectious. The fact that the wall color ties in perfectly with the “it” grey color of the year and the floors are a gorgeous display of hand-scraped, tongue-andgroove Mohawk in cognac maple—the entire setting fit perfectly. This month, Chip Wade, who is also the owner and lead designer of Wade Works LLC, a design, staging, inspection, and custom construction firm in Atlanta, will speak on the main stage at the 30th Annual Fall Atlanta Home Show. So you all can soak in some of the knowledge about design and construction I gained during our photo shoot and see why it is truly all in the details. Come see him live at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Cobb Galleria Center on Saturday, Oct. 5. You can also stop by our booth on your way to the stage and say “hello.” Turn to page 21 for the show guide. Paint color is an easy way to update your home. Read more about top trends on page 64. We move from the walls to the floor this October to discuss what Atlantans want to walk on throughout their house. As you can see, hardwoods are still the rage, but do they have to be “wood?” Find out on page 36 in the special section, Fabulous Floors. Fall is one of the best times of year to be outdoors in Atlanta. Bringing fire and water together in landscape design creates mood and atmosphere for those cozy nights. On page 72 discover how these landscape signatures can work in your setting.

It is always nice to be inspired through photos, but nothing can compare to the seeing the space live and in person. The Atlanta chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) invites you to the 4th annual NARI Tour of Remodeled Homes. Talk to the professionals who saw each project from concept to completion. For all the information on the homes, the companies behind the renovations and map and ticket information, please see the Tour Guide starting on page 49. Thank you, Chip Wade, for showing us how details make all the difference and teaching us about smart home improving. We look forward to hearing more from you at the Fall Atlanta Home Show on Oct. 5.

MTI Baths Celebrates 25 Years Atlanta-based MTI Baths, www.mtibaths.com, recently marked its 25th anniversary as one of the industry’s leading bath manufacturers. Started as a oneperson shop by founder J.C. Henry in 1988, the company now has 130 employees, revenue exceeding $20 million and is experiencing its most profitable year to date. In honor of the silver anniversary, MTI Baths has unveiled the silver inlayed Intarcia bathtub. The Intarcia was auctioned off in August as part of a weeklong anniversary celebration. All proceeds from the online auction benefitted Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, which is dedicated to protecting and preserving the Chattahoochee River, its lakes and tributaries for the people, fish and wildlife that depend on them. The employee-owned company has gained national recognition for its innovation, award-winning designs and passion for outstanding customer care. Henry, a former engineer, had a simple goal when he started MTI Baths: to make the best whirlpool tubs on the market. He named his company “Mr. Tubs” and began buying tubs from other manufactures and plumbing them with whirlpool systems. However, he quickly grew dissatisfied with the available quality and decided to take matters into his own hands. He bought a defunct bathtub manufacturing facility in 1990 and began producing his own tubs. Within a few short years, his company was creating a higher quality acrylic tub than the majority of the industry. The company offers over 125 bath models, most of which can be specified as soaker, air bath, whirlpool or combination whirlpool/air bath, manufactured in Lucite® cross-linked cast acrylic with a wide variety of styles and options.
Fourth Annual Tour of Remodeled Homes Returns Oct. 19 NARI Atlanta, www.nariatlanta.org, the local chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, will present its Fourth Annual Tour of Remodeled Homes Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A selection of metro Atlanta homes transformed by NARI members will be open to the public, with the remodeling teams on hand to discuss each project and answer questions. Proceeds from the tour will benefit the Georgia Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The tour is self-guided and will be held rain or shine. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the tour and are available at www.atlantaremodelingtour. com along with a downloadable map showing each home location. Metro Mechanical Donates Heating Metro Mechanical Inc., www.metromechanicalhvac. com, was spotlighted in 11Alive’s Random Acts of Kindness segment for donating a complete heating and air conditioning system to Loganville resident Lori Vinson. Vinson works full-time, attends school, takes care of her daughters and provides for others in the community. Despite having no heat in her own home in the winter, she frequently brings food and blankets to the homeless in Atlanta. Vinson and her family relied on a ceramic heater to keep warm, but thanks to the generous donation from Metro Mechanical Inc. (an HVAC system and labor worth about $7,000), 11Alive was able to give Vinson a wonderful surprise. Meet Chip Wade Atlanta native Chip Wade has building in his blood. Coming from a long line of experienced carpenters and woodcraftsmen, Chip began working with his father at an early age – and over the years developed an interest in carpentry, landscaping and renovation. After graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Chip moved on to earn his certification in residential construction while working for an Atlanta based home builder. Chip transitioned into media in 2007, lending his carpentry skills to the Atlanta team of HGTV’s Designed to Sell. Since then Chip has appeared on HGTV’s Curb Appeal: The Block, HGTV’s Showdown, HGTV’s Design Star, Oprah, and CNN. As the host, designer and contractor of Elbow Room, Chip is there from concept through construction to show HGTV and DIY viewers how to customize their spaces and transform houses into homes that perfectly suit their lifestyle. Chip represents several national brands as a spokesperson. Chip is the owner and lead designer of Wade Works LLC, a design, staging, inspection, and custom construction firm. Chip’s career is devoted to using his expertise to help people make educated home improvement decisions. Chip resides in Atlanta with his wife and children and will be appearing at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5th on the Reliable Heating & Air Home Show stage. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Fire Safety House In the event of a fire do you know the best way out of every room in your house? Do your kids? Does the babysitter? There are time-tested ways to prevent and survive a fire. It’s not a question of luck. It’s a matter of planning ahead. Tour this life-saving exhibit with the whole family. Talk with members of the Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services as well as the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation and begin your planning today! This exhibit has proven so successful that this is the seventh year in a row that it will be featured at the Fall Atlanta Home Show. School field trips, grandparents with their grandchildren, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters have all toured this interactive exhibit. Your children will learn ways to prevent fires, the safest ways to escape fires and learn to trust the rescue efforts of the fire department in what can be a very loud and scary time. You will learn and/or be reminded of the steps you can take to make your home safe for those that trust you with their lives. The Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation has been making a difference in the lives of Georgians for 30 years – feel free to say thanks!
A Home For All Ages Come learn about “aging in place” and how simple elements of Universal Design can make your home accessible and safe for everyone regardless of age or ability. You will quickly see why this is one of the hottest trends in home building and remodeling! This three room exhibit and the experts present at the show will offer real solutions to your tough questions regarding living longer in your own home.
Backyard Beer Garden A backyard to behold! Marietta’s own, Red Hare Brewing Company, returns to team up with Hope Atlanta to offer home show attendees the chance to sample some of their local brews! For just a $5 donation to Hope Atlanta, attendees in the garden can sample Red Hare Brewing’s Long Day Lager and Gangway IPA, both were winners of multiple People’s Choice Awards in 2011 & 2012. Also on “tap” for your taste buds – Red Hare Brewing’s Watership Brown – decide for yourself which is the best! This special feature is a treat for all of your senses. Bruce Holliday of Landscape Plans Plus will help you examine and explore local landscape and options for every type of backyard. Learn about landscape design, services, and products ranging from grass to fire, flowers to water, patios to rec areas. Every penny of the $5 donation goes to Hope Atlanta, the programs of Travelers Aid, dedicated to the prevention of homelessness in our community.

hether you’re barefoot or in high heels, the surface you walk on inside your home strongly influences your comfort level. So when considering your flooring choices, be sure to think first about your needs. Do you have indoor allergies that would be negatively affected by carpeting? Do you have
children who would benefit from a soft play surface? Are you looking for durability in a kitchen floor, or slip-resistance in a bathroom? Once you’ve considered your needs, here’s a look at the latest options, available at a flooring store in your area.
Hardwood Staying strong as the most desired and recommended flooring product today,
fFLOORS abulous hardwood has the most checkboxes marked on homeowners’ “wants” list:
moderate stain resistance, durability, low maintenance, low allergens, locally
sourced options available (read: eco-friendly and good for the country’s economy) and long-lasting style.
However, not all hardwood is created equal. “Hardwood flooring materials vary in their hardness; some are hard, some are very soft,” says Sidney Darryl Howard,
proprietor of Candler Park Restorations, www.candlerparkrestorations.com. “What you like aesthetically may not be the best choice when taking into consideration kids, dogs, etc. As a homeowner, you must consider what kind of damage or dirt you can live with seeing on your floors daily!”
Dean Howell, president of MODA Floors & Interiors, www.modafloorsandinteriors. com, praises the classic American hardwoods: oak, hickory, walnut and maple.
“These have been installed in homes for many of years and will continue to be,”
he says. “Hardwoods grown in the Southeast part of the U.S., like oak and hickory, are also an eco-friendly choice, as there is very low transportation costs related

1. Site-finished products allow you to sand and refinish when stains or damage occurs. 2. Tung oil is the most waterproof and stainresistant finish on the market. 3. A microfiber mop is all you need to keep hardwood floors clean and beautiful; floorcleaning products that are made from paper (like Swiffer or Pledge) are very rough and abrade the finish over time. Also, never use a steam cleaner on any kind of real-wood flooring. 4. Have a professional test the moisture content of your subfloor, especially concrete. If the moisture content is too high and it cannot be corrected, your home may not be suitable for hardwood flooring. 5. Advances in technology have led to dustless refinishing and nontoxic, fastdrying finishes. There are also prefinished floors that can be installed in one day—furniture can be moved from one side of the room and replaced as soon as the floor is nailed down. to these products, and the U.S. has done an excellent job managing our forests.” Laura Anzures, president of Daniels Floors, www. danielsfloors.com, agrees: “There has been a lot of hype about bamboo and cork flooring being more eco-friendly than hardwood. The fact is: both bamboo and cork come from halfway around the world, leaving a larger carbon footprint than hardwood flooring that is trucked here form local forests in the Appalachian region. Also, unlike tile, synthetic carpet and vinyl flooring, which never degrades in landfills, hardwoods are organic and do break down.” As for the latest hardwood flooring trends, rustic, staggered and either very light or very dark is in. “We are doing a lot of staggered-width flooring: we use 2¼-, 3¼- and 5-inch planks to create an interesting look,” Anzures says, noting that dark stains with a satin finish are replacing the golden colors that were popular in the ’80s and ’90s. Howard adds that very light or very dark stain choices rule the 2013 market, and that wide planks (5-10 inches wide) and reclaimed materials are also a rising trend, bringing a beautiful aesthetic and historic quality to the home. Bamboo and cork Two extremely renewable natural resources that have become popular flooring products in the last decade are bamboo and cork. Often mistaken for a wood material because it resembles hardwood flooring, bamboo is actually a grass. “Bamboo stalks can be harvested for flooring in about 5-7 years, whereas trees require about 5070 years,” says Rick Gill, marketing manager of Dasso, www.dassousa. com, which manufactures Strand Woven Bamboo and EcoSolid Forest bamboo flooring. Gill explains that time-tested flooring styles include oak, hickory and other domestic species, so Dasso has developed a number of finishes that reflect the hardwood style, as well as products that adopt a very modern look. Unlike bamboo, cork has a very distinct look, and is a very soft flooring material popular in kids’ rooms. Anzures also points out

that cork has antimicrobial properties, making it a healthy option for flooring.
Engineered wood Homeowners who love the look of hardwood floors but are on a tight budget have been flocking to the engineered or laminate wood option. The beauty of this flooring material, aside from its economical and wood-like features, is its stain resistance and ease of maintenance. However, Anzures cautions, “Many homeowners look for inexpensive flooring without considering that they may end up having to replace cheap flooring within a couple of years. It makes more sense to invest in quality flooring that will last and will add value to your home than to go with the cheapest option available.”
Tile Tile—whether marble, travertine, porcelain, or otherwise—provides a hard surfaces that can handle moisture, making it popular in kitchens, entryways and bathrooms. “Traditional looks in marble and travertine will never go out of style,” Howell says. “However, we are working with these products in varying sizes, shapes and installation patterns to give them a more updated feel.” For stain resistance and durability, Howell suggests LAMINATE ARCHITECTURAL REMNANTS WOODLAND RECLAIM www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

for its durability and eco-friendliness, linoleum is a product made from renewable materials such as solidified linseed oil, pine rosin, ground cork dust and wood flour. It is also naturally antibacterial and biodegradable. “Linoleum is a great alternative to vinyl flooring or laminates; it does not off-gas toxic fumes like vinyl,” Anzures says. Whatever flooring material you choose, Gill advises to take your time. “Don’t rush into buying flooring,” he says. “Make sure it is the right choice for you—you will be walking on it every day.” Howell adds that one of the most common homeowner mistakes he sees is DIY installation: “Invest in professional installation services that will ensure it gets done correctly the first time.” Editorial Resources begin on page 89.

Basement Remodel
12882 Waterside Drive, Milton, GA 30004 Remodeling Team: Bires Remodeling Inc., (770) 466-2038, www.biresremodeling.com; design and planning by William Verhey, Wellspring Designs, (404) 502-1201, www.wellspringdesigns.org; electrical by All Power Electric; plumbing by Pipe Dream Plumbing; drywall and painting by Rast Drywall The wish list for these homeowners included a downstairs bathroom, bar area, family area and additional storage. One of the primary focuses was to provide the homeowners with adequate office space for a growing business. The original framed area for the bathroom was too small to accommodate a tub or shower. Instead, the homeowners opted for a very nice powder room with additional floor to ceiling cabinet storage. Also added was a wet bar with under-cabinet wine cooler and refrigerator for entertaining. Under-counter lighting brought out the beauty of Metuno Bordeaux granite. By utilizing a shorter depth cabinet above the sink area, Bires Remodeling was able to keep more storage area without making the space feel cramped or overwhelming. Material selections took into account the couple’s small children and their friends’ pathway to and from the outdoors. Carpeting was used in the family and office areas only, while a high quality porcelain tile was used in the traffic areas. This had the added benefit of a slip-resistant finish as well as easy cleanup and an almost indestructible finish. The office was isolated using a glass door entrance with sidelights to increase natural lighting as well as security and privacy. This was a semi-custom design incorporating “prairie style” grills on the glass to add interest. Stain was used rather than paint the doorway to help define the space. Some of the most interesting and energy-efficient features of this project are behind the drywall. Bires used Icynene gold open cell foam extensively through the exterior walls and ceilings to provide indoor air comfort as well as sound dampening. With a high-performance exterior envelope, they were able to utilize a zone system off of the upstairs heating and air unit, saving on the cost and space requirements of an additional mechanical unit dedicated to the downstairs space. The new closedcombustion heating and air system and Navien tankless hot water heater add to the high efficiency of the new space. An existing load-bearing wall, while only 4 feet wide, cut into the main traffic area of the space, negatively affected the room’s natural flow to exterior. With some welding, steel columns and beams, Bires was able to open the space for a significant improvement in room flow and feel. New oak stairs were installed for continuity with the upstairs living areas.

This family wanted to create a basement space that would play off the exterior pool and patio area created a couple years ago. The already-finished basement was a disjointed group of rooms that did not function well. So, Distinctive Remodeling Solutions threw everything they knew about the current basement up in the air and created something totally different. Major framing changes were required (including steel and new concrete footings) to create such an open space, but it made the difference in how the space flowed overall. The floor plan was reworked to create a large entertainment area anchored in natural stone tile. The custom bar in alder with a rich stain and granite counter in absolute black evokes the feel of a British men’s club and houses one of the room’s two televisions. Mosaico Travertino tile in the bar’s wine alcove and backsplash echoes the flooring and offers counterpoint to the deep hue of the cabinetry. The newel and handrail of the stair are of mahogany and stained to match the bar, with balusters in the same oil rubbed bronze as the plumbing fixtures and hardware on the doors. A carpet runner created a transition from upstairs with a tone-on-tone pattern that picks up the colors of the tile. Each area of this main space was subtly defined by the ceiling treatment, with separate treys over the bar and seating area, and beams over the ping pong table. The new exercise room features cork flooring for maximum comfort during tough workouts. Afterward, sore muscles can relax in the sauna followed by a scrub in the shower whose walls are of Newcastle Travertine with accent rows in the same Ravena as the sauna floor.

Basement Remodel 2801 Long Lake Drive, Roswell, GA 30075 Remodeler: Neighbors Home Services, (678) 571-9464, www.neighborshome.com After their kids moved out, it was time for the owners of this home to have the space they had always wanted. With a little imagination, a dingy, musty basement was transformed into their now-favorite living space. The basement had been plumbed years before, so a bathroom and a wet bar could be added. There also was a bay window with an opportunity for a view. A large living space was created with sufficient room for a bar, pool table, large-screen TV and sitting area. The bathroom was enlarged to include a full tub and shower unit, vanity, toilet and linen closet. In the hallway, a cedar-lined walk-in closet was added to provide storage for off-season clothing. The challenge of hiding the utilities in the ceiling became the architectural focal point for the space with the addition of a triple tray ceiling. Rope lighting in the crown molding on a dimmer allows the owners to set the mood for any occasion.

The renovation included a billiards room, sitting room, bar, wine cellar, guest suite, home gym, spa, movie theatre and powder room. The homeowners wanted the space to feel elegant and comfortable with rustic European charm, utilizing materials and concepts wisely within the budget allotted. The plan required structural changes, mechanical system upgrades, energy efficiency measures and audio-visual needs. The end result far exceeded expectations.

Thrilled about the finished project, the homeowners decided to add an exterior makeover, which included a saltwater pool by Custom Pools of Atlanta, arbor and fireplace, grilling area and new plantings by Landscape Studio. A new exposed aggregate driveway and stone retaining walls helped create more usable lawn areas. Also included were landscape lighting and ornamental gates.

Gorgeous gray The go-to neutral color that’s in demand today: gray, replacing the earlier popular neutral of the beige family. “Gray is one of the colors that has been in the marketplace for about three years now,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams, www.sherwin-williams.com. “It is really continuing to evolve and people are embracing it more and more. We will see that trend continue to move forward and see beige kind of take a back seat.” “The beautiful thing about gray and, I think, why it’s so classic and endearing is because it is a really true neutral, so you can balance that out with either warmer or cooler tones in a lot of the other accents and accessories,” says Sharon Grech, a color and design expert for Benjamin Moore, www.benjaminmoore.com. Gray also is showing up in kitchens, making for a “gorgeous” look, says Rebecca Ewing of Rebecca Ewing Color & Design, www.handsonhues.com, in Atlanta. Juliet Jones of Juliet Jones Studio, www.julietjonesstudio.com, also is noticing a new trend when it comes to colors for kitchen cabinetry. “I see a lighter color spectrum — not necessarily white or cream — with beautiful new glaze recipe colors,” Jones says. “My customers want something more unique than the typical tea-stained cabinetry.” Also making a comeback are pastels, Grech adds. In fact, Benjamin Moore selected Lemon Sorbet as its 2013 color of the year. Pastels combined with gray, Grech says, take on “more of a

Set the mood In addition to the feel that paint colors can give, they also can affect the mood in a room, or the home overall. “For many people, a bright bold color will inspire energy, while softer more subdued tones of taupe, brown, tan, green or silver will create a more relaxing environment,” says Bill Sharp, franchise owner, CertaPro Painters, www.certapro.com. “The real trick is to find which colors trigger which emotions for each individual.” According to Jones, red signals romance and, in some cases, aggression. Bluegreen, she says, represents tranquility, peacefulness and a free feeling. A “great accent color,” according to Jones, purple is regal, “dominates a space,” and should be paired with a lighter color “to calm it down.” White and black, Jones continues, can be paired with any color, while pastels make a room feel light and airy. Additionally, jewel tones, Jones believes, “are very heavy and need to be paired with lighter colors.” And while yellow reflects happiness and sunshine, it is one of the more challenging colors around which to decorate, she says.
Choose your colors Once you know what moods colors evoke, how do you determine what colors work best in what rooms? For Ewing, the answer comes from a pair of considerations: “How do you need to feel in this space and how do you need to behave in this space? For a bathroom, a lot of people will default to it being something that repeats what’s in
Ask an Expert Q: If I am painting my walls do I need to paint my trim? A: It depends on budget but it really finishes off a room professionally. Most of the non-trim jobs we complete are followed up with trim work. You might not notice it, but the trim in houses with multiple kids is in desperate need of a touchup. It likely has shoe scuff marks and nicks from moving or carpet installation. The trim is doing its job by protecting the walls and sealing the wall and floor connection. —Scott Specker, owner, Five Star Painting 66

Get inspired If you’re looking for inspiration or even to get an idea of the color of your paint choices before applying, you’ll find a wealth of resources online. “All of the color companies offer a way to look at a photo of a room (or upload your own) and change the wall, ceilings and trim colors,” Ewing says. “It’s really quite cool. It is, however, only for reference. Never select a paint color from a computer monitor! Get the actual chips or, better yet, paint a swatch or sample board. The real thing may be similar to what you see on your screen, but it will never be an exact match.” Sharp echoes that sentiment. “I much prefer to get larger samples of the actual color up on the walls, and even still must always accept that the only real way to see what it will look like in the space is to paint the whole room.”
Visualizer, where you may upload a photo and drag and drop a color or use a brush to paint. Benjamin Moore offers the Color Capture app that allows you to snap a picture of a color that catches your eye then find the paint company’s match. “The main thing to keep in mind is that it is your home,” Jones recommends. “Make it yours. Make sure to keep the colors transitioning from room to room. You want to make the overall tonality of the house come off well.” Editorial Resources begin on page 89.

or homeowners wanting to take their landscapes to the next level, fire and water features can provide just the right touch of interest and elegance. From a simple fountain or fire pit to an intricate rock stream or distinctive fireplace, there’s a design that perfectly suits every sized landscape and homeowners’ lifestyle.
add a bit of warmth Some of the more popular fire features today include fire pits, fire bowls and large outdoor fireplaces. “Homeowners are discovering the benefits of adding a fire pit to their outdoor area,” says Matt Dombrowski, president and owner of Greenstone, www.greenstoneproductsonline.com, in Winder. “The addition of a fire pit provides warmth and light, and extends the use of the backyard into the night and into the cooler seasons of the year. Fire pits allow families to get much more out of their living space while creating a great place for social gatherings and entertainment.” Ed Castro, principle designer with Ed Castro Landscape, www.edcastro.com, (member of PLANET,
lement s
the national landscape industry association) in Roswell, says he’s seeing more fire pits as well. They require a smaller investment than fireplaces, and when not in use, homeowners can fill them with plants and cover with glass for a terrarium look, he says.

When selecting a fire feature, Shane LeBlanc, designer for Selective Designs, www. selectivedesigns.com, in Peachtree City, says to choose something that will enhance the home rather than detract from it. “Have it architecturally styled to complement the home,” he says. Consider, too, how much maintenance and upkeep will be required when selecting a fire feature. “If the homeowner wants a roaring fire and enjoys the aroma of burning wood, a wood-burning fire pit is the way to go,” Dombrowski says. “They do need to be cleaned often, but are the most economical choice. Natural gas pits are relatively carefree and easy to start and stop. However, they have a smaller controlled flame and are more expensive.” For homeowners operating on a limited budget, consider purchasing a do-it-yourself fire pit kit. Another option is opting for a smaller, more unique project instead of something big, LeBlanc says.
let it flow Water features continue to evolve in residential landscapes, with a focus on lower maintenance, says John Newman, president of Classic Landscapes, www. classiclandscapingga.com, in Hampton. For example, homeowners are opting for pondless waterfalls because they want the sound of a babbling brook. Natural creek-looking waterfalls and creek beds also are prevalent, he says. Castro says he also is seeing more pond-less systems with more of an aesthetic use in a container such as a beautiful urn. “There are a lot of fountains,” he says. “You can hear some splash.”

Clients are using water features not only for aesthetic appeal but also to mask noise, Newman says. For example, if your backyard is bordered by a busy street, a waterfall or water running over rocks can cover the traffic with a more soothing sound. When designing the water feature, Newman suggests looking at the home’s architecture and environment for inspiration. You want to draw the architecture into the landscape to improve the overall flow, he says. For instance, if the house has a stone façade, repeat the same stone in the water feature to complement the home’s appearance. If it’s a stucco home, do something a little more formal to reflect the architecture of the home. “Don’t think of the water feature as a separate piece,” Newman says. “Think of it as a part of the whole picture.” To keep the budget in check, Castro suggests purchasing a selfcontained kit from water garden nurseries or researching and purchasing online.
light it up A great way to enhance both fire and water features is through lighting. “Water features really come to life at night when lighting is incorporated,” says Lindsey Barnhill, co-owner of Architectural Transformations LLC, www.AToutdoorlighting.com, in Acworth. “By using submersible fixtures, you can highlight waterfalls right from within the feature itself.” www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

given their size and scope. One example is using mini LED well lights to accent the stone on a fireplace, says Chris Wakefield, president of The Outdoor Lights Inc., www. theoutdoorlights.com, in Cumming. Due to their smaller size, fire bowls and pits don’t normally require any lighting. “Fire features have to be lit in such a way that it does not detract from the actual fire effect,”

First, less is more. “Don’t try to light everything,” Wakefield says. “Darkness is our friend that helps create depth.” Second, the light is the star, not the fixtures. “The goal is not to see the lights, but to only enhance what you are lighting,” LeBlanc says. gardenplanner 10 tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden in october
1
There’s still time to plant and renovate a fescue lawn if you do it in the first few weeks of October. Lime and fertilize as needed, but do not apply a pre-emergent weed killer, as it will prevent weed and grass seeds from germinating.
2
It’s time for fall cleanup in the yard. Besides raking leaves from your lawn, remove fallen leaves and petals from the rose garden and perennial beds. This will discourage pests from hiding out all winter and help to control fungal diseases next spring and summer. Begin planning your fall vegetable garden. Take a soil sample to your county extension office (1-800-ASK-UGA1) and get the soil in good shape!
3
Fall is the best time to add trees and shrubs to your landscape. When deciding what to plant, consider how the tree will look in your yard all four seasons. For interest year-round, consider some of the Georgia Gold Medal winners: ‘Glowing Embers’ Japanese maple (Acer palmatum ‘Glowing Embers’), Trident maple (Acer buergeranum), ‘Alice’ oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Alice’), Athena® elm (Ulmus parvifolia Athena®), ‘Rose Creek’ or ‘Canyon Creek’ abelia (Abelia hybrids), or ‘Mohawk’ viburnum (Viburnum x burkwoodii ‘Mohawk’). All of these provide beautiful fall color, too!

Plant pansies, snapdragons, violas, mustard, ornamental cabbage and kale and dianthus as soon as cooler weather arrives. Be sure to fertilize and water them after planting and throughout the growing season.
5
Fall is the best time to plant many perennials. Make sure that they receive plenty of water (pay attention to how much rain we receive) and do not apply fertilizer until spring. Mulch lightly, as excess mulch can cause crown rot.
Perennials whose leaves and stems have turned brown can be cut back now. Many perennials can also be divided and transplanted now.

Summer annuals are on their way out this month—although some may make it until the first frost (Nov.15, traditionally). Throw them on the compost pile, too.
Take advantage of a last harvest of summer herbs (such as basil and dill). Freeze and dry for use throughout the winter.
8 10
If you’ve still got tomatoes on the vine, watch the temperature – if daytime temps fall below 65º, pick the remaining fruit and let ripen indoors.
Make sure that your houseplants are in good shape to bring inside. Check for insects and spray them with appropriate insecticides. Be sure to bring inside if nighttime temperatures fall below 50º.

around their home is a first step in the process. Contacting the vendors typically used by the contractor can give an indication of their financial reliability. Ensuring that you get proof of insurance from the carrier is another must-do. Determining the contractor’s membership in professional associations can be helpful, as well. It is also critical to construct a contract that stipulates, in detail, all of the materials required for the satisfactory completion of the job. That’s a pretty good list, but a recent roofing encounter is a dramatic reminder that one additional step is required: You need to actually take a look at the work done at other locations. In the case in point, the phrase, “That’s the way we’ve always done it,” was the only explanation offered for flashing work that was at least cosmetically unacceptable, if not structurally unreliable. In fact, the gauge of the material used was so light that it was virtually impossible to install it without cosmetic damage; the fastener protocol was such that damage was guaranteed (masonry nails were driven

cahptalk DIY May Not Always Save Money Look to the pros to do the big jobs right
“WE WILL GROW WITH YOUR GARDEN”
L I N D E R to D E pay S I G N A N D C O N S U L T A N T . C O M There are many of us who justJ refuse the high prices contractors charge when we
believe we can do the work ourselves and save money. The real question is: Are we saving money or are we ultimately spending more money than we expected we would spend? Regardless of whether you handle a project on your own or hire a contractor, you must be aware of the building codes and the legal responsibility to take out a permit when making improvements to your home. Neglecting to take out a permit for a job that requires permits can cost you dearly if someone turns you in. How about not understanding the building codes, building it wrong, then having to redo the project? Hmm… That would cost more money than you expected. Let’s not forget about the safety and risk factors involved in some of the build process. Priceless… It can take months to build a project such as a finished basement. How much is your time worth? What happens when you sell your home? Surprises come right when you aren’t expecting them. The buyers hire a Cracker Jack inspector and, yep, you guessed it, he points out the nonprofessional job in the basement and asks the dreaded question: Was a building permit taken out for this work? The sale of the house is at risk and, if the county is called, you are at risk. If you speak with independent inspectors, legitimate contractors and other housing industry leaders, they will all confirm that building without a permit is a major risk that can cost you dearly. Not everything you do in your home requires a permit. At least half of homeowners around the country do work in their homes without a permit and may even hire a contractor who does the same. If you are planning on doing structural work, plumbing and electrical work requiring changes, a permit is needed. My recommendation to the DIY handyperson is to handle those repairs and facelifts that you can easily achieve. Stay away from work that requires extensive changes and the need for permitting unless you are really good. Remember, a permit means that a professional will look at the job, so it’s a good idea either to hire a professional or to make sure you are well versed in the code and how to install the job correctly.
