editor’sletter Fall is always a special time of year around our house. The heat of the summer is behind us and we have the holidays to look forward to in quick succession. By early October, I drag out my big plastic bin labeled “Halloween” from a shelf in the storage room in a sort of symbolic rite of passage from summer to autumn. In the bin is a mixture of homemade decorations and special tchotchkes I’ve collected through the years. One of my favorite Halloween decorations is a set of terra cotta pumpkins, the size of the real thing, with lids that come

For my family, October is a time of gathering together in cozy spaces to watch the leaves turn colors, light a candle inside and get to work on our Halloween costumes. What we didn’t do in October in Colorado was grill outdoors. How lucky are we in Atlanta that October is the perfect month to get out and cook? Get creative—use cups, baskets or other colorful items to keep your supplies organized and within reach. Plants are a great addition to a study space because they add color and have other benefits: cleaner air, reduced stress and healthier skin. Succulents are a good choice since they require less water and maintenance.

Your workspace should combine ambient and task lighting to provide enough illumination that you avoid eyestrain at any time of day. Ambient lighting produced from chandeliers, ceiling- or wall-mounted fixtures or recessed cans provides overall illumination that radiates a comfortable level of brightness. Task lighting from properly placed recessed cans or under-cabinet light strips should be direct and bright, but don’t overdo it—beware of distracting glare and shadows. Task lighting is also an opportunity to bring your own style to a space by adding decorative pendants, track lighting and floor or desk lamps.

f you’ve ever watched HGTV’s “Tiny House Hunters” or “Tiny House, Big Living,” you’ve probably asked yourself: Could I actually live a tiny lifestyle? What’s this tiny house movement all about anyway?

According to Gary Hollingsworth of Clayton Tiny Homes, tiny houses represent a “less is more” approach to living. “Tiny homes are more about an attitude and a way of life than about space,” he says. “It’s about quality, not quantity.” That’s obviously true, as tiny homes typically offer a total of 100 to 400 square feet of living space. Regardless of the square footage, though, the concept remains the same. “I think people are looking for a simpler way to live. Johnston recommends checking out BeMoreWithLess.com’s Project 333, a minimalist fashion challenge that prompts viewers to dress with 33 items or less over three months—box up the remainder of your wardrobe and learn to live with fewer clothes. When there’s less to store, living simply becomes easier. The same concept can be applied to other items in your home. Susan Gunyou of Driftwood Homes USA notes that the goal in the tiny house movement is to pare down to only the necessities you use daily and to remove duplicate items in your home (especially in the kitchen, where several appliances may serve the same purpose).

In the Indigo tiny home from Driftwood Homes, Gunyou notes that a Murphy bed provides desk space with storage cubbies when it is folded up. With so many smart furniture pieces on the market (such as seating options like couches with hidden storage underneath the cushions), there are unlimited options to take the tiny-home concept to your rooms.

go vertical “You must maximize vertical space as well as floor space,” Hollingsworth notes. In today’s tiny houses, every inch—from the floorboards to the ceiling—is used in some way. In addition to hanging as much as possible on the walls and placing shelves and cabinets high up, the ceiling actually lends itself to exceptional storage options. For example, Dungan likes to transform vaulted areas into usable space, building bunks and additional sleeping spaces into them for what he calls “people storage.” Resende also touts using the ceiling area for storage by installing an attic with a ladder door and filling up the space within it. “It’s a great way to store towels or bed sheets,” she points out.

Here, architectural down lights in the ceiling, typically centered over the sink, provide illumination to the countertop and the decorative flooring in front of the sink cabinet. In an internal space with no access to windows or natural lighting, you might want to think about adding a skylight or “sun tunnel,” like this one from Velux, in the ceiling. The product looks like a normal light fixture, but runs from the roof to your ceiling just like a skylight. It’s a great way to introduce natural light to the space. This is one of the most eco-friendly lighting options out there. Of course, you’ll need to provide a source of traditional lighting to the room for cloudy days and in the evening.

Outdoor Grills—Fuel the Fire Nothing calls to mind a relaxing day outdoors more than food cooked on the backyard BBQ grill. Whether you’ve got a good, old-fashioned hot-dogs-and-hamburgers family meal in mind or you’re tapping into your inner foodie daredevil, the outdoor grill is a natural place to start. According to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association, “Americans say easy clean up is one of the most pleasurable parts of grilling food outdoors. In a recent survey, we found that 70 percent of respondents find a lot of pleasure in having no pots and pans to clean up when grilling as opposed to indoor cooking.” Sound good?

Take It For a Test Drive When you’re in the store looking at various grills, give each one a shake. Literally. Grills that have been seamlessly molded are naturally more stable, and thus safer, than grills that have pieces and parts that have been bolted together. Take a look under the hood and, while you’re at it, check out the distance between the handle on the grill’s lid and the heat source. There are some types of wood floors better suited for pets. They aren’t indestructible, but they are certainly more practical than others. Look for these dog-friendly flooring types: • Wire Brushed. These wood floors are distressed by a machine to remove the sapwood (soft wood) and enhance the wood grain, adding texture and character. Its weathered, elegant, antique look hides scratches particularly well due to its matte finish.

• Character Grade. This flooring keeps the wood’s natural appearance and displays its full characteristics. Color variations and knots occurring naturally show clearly. This visually less “perfect” wood hides damage well. • Distressed Hardwood Flooring. This wood is intentionally scratched and scraped to create an antique look. Planks’ edges can be darkened, wire brushed and sculpted, resulting in lots of texture and character. You won’t know if a dent in your floor was one that you paid for or one your dog made! Scratches can be easily hidden using a touch-up pen. • Low-Gloss, Satin or Matte Finishes. These sheen levels help hide normal wear and tear and show footprints less. The glossier and darker you go, the more light reflects off the floor—showing more dirt, dust and imperfections—not what you want with pets.

• Sliced Cut Engineered. A hardwood veneer is glued on top of engineered hardwood. Look for a top veneer at least 3mm thick, as you can sand and refinish it at least twice. • Aluminum Oxide. This chemical is used to finish flooring because of its strength. It serves as the protective coating on most prefinished hardwood floors. • Acrylic-Infused/Impregnated. Acrylic resins and stain are injected into the veneer so the boards are much more crush-resistant than untreated wood. Most acrylic-infused products have commercial warranties. Because stain is injected in the actual wood fiber, the color is more permanent, greatly minimizing visible scratches.

• Oil-Rubbed Finish. This very low-gloss finish uses oil instead of polyurethane or wax and tends to make wood look vintage. Oil penetrates and becomes part of the wood, so it isn’t nearly as sensitive to scratches or wear as a urethane finish. It’s easy to maintain (DIY) and, if done properly, will prevent a floor from ever needing sanding. Expect these floors to be on the upper end of the price scale.

diybloggersbeat Get Creative with Crates Looking for an inexpensive way to DIY some home decor? Wooden crates are readily accessible at craft stores and can be easily transformed into a storage feature—plus they lend your space that popular rusticfarmhouse look. You’ll have your purses stowed and hallway organized in no time!

MATERIALS:

❏ 2 medium crates

❏ 1 extra-large crate

❏ 2 10" x 25" x ¾" boards

❏ White gloss

paint & brush; stain & brush

❏ 4 eye hooks ❏ 4 casters ❏ 1 ¼" brad nails

Simple Steps

Arrange one medium crate next to extralarge crate, standing

them on their ends. Place second medium crate on top of the first and secure using

brad nails. Paint the crates white and let dry. Stain boards and let dry.

Attach boards to top and bottom of crates using brad nails. Pre-drill 1/8” holes evenly spaced into the top inside face

of the extra-large crate. Screw in eye hooks.

Attach casters to the corners of the bottom side of the base.
