editor’sletter Deck the halls (...and the kitchen and the bathroom)

An Idea Worth Entertaining The concept of home entertainment has changed tremendously over the past several decades. I remember how excited I was years ago when my family first got rid of our television’s rabbit ears and upgraded to cable … my sister and I were glued to the TV for days, overwhelmed that we had more than five channels from which we could watch. And I remember getting my first Nintendo gaming system for Christmas, which I’m pretty sure is now in my attic somewhere, boxed up as a memorable “antique.”

Plumbing Distributors Incorporated plumbing supplies plumbing fixtures • lighting

Today, however, most families have cast TV antennas and first-model gaming systems aside. Instead, homeowners are filling their living spaces with state-of-the-art electronics, including high-definition (and even 3D) flatscreens, interactive gaming systems, home theaters and storage accessories to accommodate their gadgets. We’ve highlighted some of the most popular trends for catering to your home entertainment area in our special section, “Redefining the Media Room,” starting on page 25, which offers tips for creating the perfect space for virtual fitness and gaming activities. From wireless options to storage solutions, we’ve got advice to keep you up to speed on today’s trends. If you need to tackle storage concerns in other areas of your home, be sure to take a look at our closets and sheds features. Whether you’re looking to create a top-of-the line closet room to keep your wardrobe orderly or you’re simply hoping to free up some indoor space by creating an outdoor storage area, you’ll find plenty of useful tips to help you get started.

Vetrazzo Opens Near Atlanta Vetrazzo, the California-based company that specializes in building materials comprised of recycled glass, has opened a facility in Tate, known as the marble capital of Georgia. The facility, a manufacturing plant, is housed in the old Georgia Marble facility, which is still in operation. “It’s cool to see production of marble and Vetrazzo side by side,” Mary Warner of Vetrazzo says. Vetrazzo is a sustainable product, made from 85 percent recycled glass. To learn more about this green material, visit www.vetrazzo.com.

Q:

What is the odor that comes from my heater when I turn it on for the first time in the fall and winter months? Is something wrong?

A:

When your system has been sitting idle or in the cooling mode of operation, it’s perfectly normal to notice odd odors when you first turn on your heat. Yes, this includes a burning smell. Be cautious, though. If the smell is consistent and doesn’t go away after running the heat for a few hours, you may want to call a professional to check out your system and make sure it’s safe to operate. You can stop odors by turning on the heat once a month and letting it run for five minutes. It’s also recommended to have an agreement with a professional HVAC company to service your equipment at least twice per year.

O

n Nov. 19, 2006, home entertainment as we knew it changed. Though the release of the Nintendo Wii gaming console was just 4 years ago, the resulting advent of virtual gaming and fitness happened so quickly, it seems like it’s been ages since video gam-

ing was only popular among couch potatoes. Now, you can work out, compete in sporting events, race, box, canoe and much more—all from the comfort of your home and using many of the same components you use to watch TV and movies, stream Internet videos and listen to music. Naturally, these changes in home entertainment have changed the way residential media rooms are designed. More multi-purposed than ever, these all-in-one spaces are where families spend most of their free time, which also increases the importance of function in the room’s design.

This TV is hidden away in custom-built cabinetry (inset, bottom right). When the unit is ready for use, the flat panel lifts up out of the cabinet via a motorized mount (main photo).

Storage savvy The key to functional design is storage—and media rooms epitomize this theory. Today’s virtual-gaming and fitness components are more complicated to store than the simple joysticks and square controllers of yesteryear. From ergonomic controllers to guitars, fishing poles, driving wheels and dance floors, today’s components can be difficult to store in a standard media-center drawer. “We listen to each client’s needs, assess the most convenient space options, then implement a custom design, such as dual-sliding drawers or large inwall equipment storage systems,” says Doug Van Arsdale, president and CEO of Custom Home Theater LLC. “Some designs include custom cabinetry, where the creativity and special-finish options are endless.” Another option is to go as wireless as possible. “Each system offers wireless controllers, so we set the systems up with these to keep the equipment out of sight,” says Ron Rimawi, president of Digital Interiors Inc. “We also wire specially for accessories’ hook-ups and plugins, so drums, etc., for Wii can be plugged in without having wires all over the floor and creating dangerous trip hazards.”

TV’s coming-out party One of the biggest changes in the way home-entertainment rooms are designed is that televisions are not always stored in cabinets when not in use. As TVs become thinner and their functions and amenities increase, they may become part of the focal point of a room, often hanging over a fireplace. “In many gathering rooms, you will find a fireplace as the focal point,” Van Arsdale says. “Interior designers believe that seating should be adjusted to the focal point of the room, so wouldn’t it make sense to have the TV convenient to the seating position? So long as we can pre-wire for these types of surfaces—sheetrock www.homeimprovementmag.com

Wiener’s advice is sound—after all, how much fun is a beige room? The media room is one space where you can go all out with your brightest color choice, or a cheerful theme. “Don’t feel like the room has to be blacked out with dark blues, grays or browns,” Holmberg says. “This is your media room, so have fun with it. Choose colors that you enjoy, but keep them flat; light reflects more on a gloss-type surface, even on stained wood.” www.homeimprovementmag.com

Quick and Easy Holiday Decor BY JANET PRIOLEAU

The perfect tree, exquisitely wrapped gifts, and “eye catching” color palettes don’t happen by accident. Rather, they begin with a plan that is quite simple and affordable. Using these five techniques will give you the well-designed holiday that you and your family deserve.

even a sleigh! A tree that is 7’ will work well for this look. Placing it in an urn or sleigh will give it more height and depth. There are urns, sleighs and trees available in a myriad of sizes. Choose the one that will accommodate your room.

1. Color palette Who said the holidays could only be red and green? You can begin with a color palette or add onto your existing color scheme. For example, use teal, robin’s egg blue, chocolate and cream. Purchase 2-4 pillows in this palette, as well as a throw, floral/poinsettias, candles, dinner napkins and a table runner.

3. Ornaments For a 3D look in your tree, use ornaments in three sizes. Add texture by using different designs, patterns and finishes. Purchase round ornaments in three sizes. For example: 3 inches, 6 inches and 9 inches. Using three different sizes along with different patterns, textures and finishes will give your tree depth and dimension.

2. Tree For a sophisticated, designer look, place the tree in a decorative urn or

holiday lights are available in a myriad of colors, clear lights give a design a universal appeal for the holidays. 5. Gifts Using your color palette, purchase giftwrap in different finishes and textures. All gifts do not have to be under the tree! Place smaller gifts in vignettes around the room, and strategically stack the larger gifts round the urn or placed in the sleigh.

Her next step—if she’s following suit with today’s empty nesters—is to downsize to a smaller home, or renovate, making at least one of the bedrooms a large spacious closet, called a “closet room.” “After sacrificing time, money and household space for the sake of children, clients are expressing an ‘it’s my turn’ attitude,” says Barbara McCandless, senior designer with Closet Factory. “They have money available for home improvement projects, and are willing to spend it to get their closets the way they want them.”

Move over, Carrie Bradshaw … we’re talking BIG Empty nesters are creating closet rooms worthy of Sex and the City fame. “Because empty nesters are typically moving from much larger homes and downsizing to smaller living quarters they are often focused on maximizing whatever storage space is available in the home,” says Jeff Lewis, president and CEO of Closets and More. “They usually want to make the most of their space, using it for storage of clothing, but also as a dressing room. 5 Tips for Selecting the Right Closet Design Professional Look for a professional who listens to all your needs, desires and concerns. Select the professional you feel you can trust and who makes you feel you are their most important customer Experience is invaluable. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, it takes some time to become a truly talented closet designer. Look at the professional’s total years of experience in the business. Invest wisely. s your basement or garage overflowing with tools, sports equipment and gardening supplies? Sometimes you just need a little extra space for stowing all those outdoor extras, and a storage shed may be the answer. Whether you choose a shed that’s custom-designed for your

needs or decide to go with a pre-designed kit, you can create a new, wellorganized space for whatever it is you need to stash outdoors.

An outside box The material is one of the first decisions to make when picking out a shed. “The two most popular materials for storage sheds are aluminum and wood,” says Jim McMahon of McMahon Construction Inc. in Dacula. Both types have advantages. “Aluminum siding requires no maintenance or painting, and it will last a very long time with no rust,” says Bryan Hudson of Superior Buildings and Carports Inc. in Powder Springs. One popular siding material for sheds is the T1-11 variety. “The standard T1-11 siding, a 3/4-inch exterior plywood that has to be painted and primed, has given way to a modern approach—

“The space within becomes the reality of the building.” —Frank Lloyd Wright, architect

either Hardy Company concrete composite board or the more popular SmartSide paneling,” says David Parsons of Bradley Buildings in Douglasville. “Both are home-quality boards, but unlike the standard type, they are primed.” One advantage of this type of siding is that it can be matched to your home’s current siding to create continuity. Many people prefer the natural look of wood. “A wood building is easier to heat and cool, has more aesthetic appeal and has a more substantial construction,” says Joseph LaFlamme of Conestoga Builders Inc. in Covington. While wooden sheds are generally more expensive and require some maintenance, they remain popular for their customization options and sturdy construction.

Custom or kit? You can choose either a custom-built shed or a more standard shed that is built from a kit. Custom-built sheds usually cost between $2,000 and $4,000, while kits, or pre-fabricated buildings, tend to range from around $500 to $1,500, depending on the size and materials. Most people who choose kits do so based on the lower cost and do-it-yourself construction, while

Small & Sturdy If you have limited space and a tight budget but need a little extra storage, this compact shed by Brookstone, for $399.95, may be the answer. those who choose the custom option are looking for professional construction and a space that fits their needs more precisely. “A kit is an inexpensive way to create more storage space without the cost of a custom-built shed; however, with a custom-built shed, you get peace of mind knowing that your shed was built by professionals with knowledge of the proper building and safety codes,” McMahon says. Don’t forget to consider your neighborhood when choosing a shed. “If you live in a neighborhood where the plans have to be approved by the home owners association, a custom-built shed is the answer,” Parsons says. “The builder can match the trim and other aspects of your home, incorporating them into a true work of beauty. Let your imagination soar!” Some of the custom

windows, cupolas and weathervanes. “Let your budget be your guide, because a custom-built shed has few limitations,” Parsons says.

Added extras You can make your shed into an extra room by adding a few amenities like electricity and climate control. “Most aluminum buildings come pre-wired with a light and an outlet,” Hudson says. Because adding electricity to a shed changes the building code of the shed, some people that plan on spending large amounts of time in the shed do tend to add electricity and climate control,” McMahon says. Adding air conditioning will keep your items in top shape, and it will be more comfortable if you plan to work in the shed. “A through-the-wall air conditioning unit is most desirable,” Parsons says. “While the window-type AC unit works well, it is not recommended to place this in a modern vinyl window; the window is simply not designed to support the heavy unit.”

Pick your purpose When choosing and designing your shed, it’s important to know ahead of time what you plan to use it for so you can fit the design to your needs. Sheds can serve a wide variety of purposes, from protecting your items from the elements to providing additional workspace. “We find customers using storage sheds in a multitude of ways,” LaFlamme says. “Most often, a family has run out of room in the house and needs an outbuilding to reclaim their living space.” Some of the items people are storing in their sheds are: • Lawn mowers and yard tools • Gardening supplies • Extra items when a new family member moves in • Bicycles or motorcycles • Holiday and seasonal decorations • Pool supplies Sheds can also be used as extra rooms, or personalized spaces separate from the home. Some homeowners are turning their sheds into workshops, playrooms, home offices, art studios or small businesses.

If you’ve chosen a custom-built shed, ask the company about storage options. “Organization will certainly improve the worth of a shed and its ability to store multiple items,” Parsons says. If you have room for a loft, that will provide added overhead storage. “Custom wood benches or shelves are popular and will help organize the interior,” Hudson says. There are many other options for customizing your storage that can be found at any homeimprovement or organization store. Hooks can hold bicycles, rakes and shovels, while for permanent organization, or opt for moveable bookshelf-style shelving if you want more flexibility. adjacent dining room to facilitate socializing and movement for guests between the two rooms. Enlarging this space required the removal of a load-bearing wall, which was replaced by a laminated beam above the ceiling between the kitchen and dining room. A large, soft maple wood island with flax glaze and a distressed finish complete with a warming drawer was installed in the center of the kitchen to provide additional space for cooking, food preparation and entertaining. Distressed walnut wood with ogee edge countertops, installed on the island, were selected for added warmth 56

and to complement the distressed design of the kitchen cabinetry. Additional countertops in granite and stone, as well as cabinetry, were added throughout the kitchen to provide the family with more room to cook and entertain. “By taking out the wall between the kitchen and dining room, zones of work areas were created. With the island in the kitchen, the three boys have access to the refrigerator and microwave oven without getting under foot of the cook,” says Linda Pittam, ASID, Pittam Associates Inc. Brand new, high-tech appliances were installed to facilitate both efficient cooking and food storage. “All of the kitchen appliances were selected because they’re easy to use, enabling every member of the family to contribute to cooking and entertaining,” Pittam says. In addition, the Xenon lighting and incandescent cans and pendants installed throughout the room provide a better, crisper light with a longer life expectancy. The renovation enhanced the overall beauty of the home and created a feeling of openness that wasn’t there before.

where to buy Area rugs can be purchased in a number of locations, ranging from carpet and

Purchasing an indoor area rug is a simple way to change the look of a room, whether you want to add a pop of color to a drab space or cozy up an area with hardwood floors. But with so many options on the market today, selecting the right rug can be tough. Following are some tips to make your decision a cinch. Size does matter Before you even begin shopping, determine what size rug you’re seeking. Unless you plan on having one custom made, you can expect to find area rugs in 2x3, 3x5 and 4x6 sizes, which work well as accents in smaller areas, such as bathrooms and foyers. Larger sizes include 6x9, 8x10, 9x12 and 12x15, which are often appropriate for larger spaces, such as dens and dining rooms. Remember, however, the larger the rug, the larger the price tag.

decor showrooms to websites to bigbox stores. According to Home Textiles Today, however, the most popular places that consumers purchased their area rugs in 2009 were discount department stores and mid-priced chains, including Walmart, Target, Kmart, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Meijer and Sears.

notes

Facts about fibers Area rugs are available in a multitude of materials, from cotton and wool to bamboo. Before you decide on the rug’s material, consider its purpose. If you are simply buying it to spruce up the decor in your home and plan on switching it out frequently, select a nylon or polypropylene variety, which are generally inexpensive. If you want an eco-friendly option, consider purchasing a rug made with plant fibers, including bamboo. If you’re seeking a rug for a high-traffic area, try one made from wool; while they’re not the most inexpensive option, they are extraordinarily durable and will last for years. The power of patterns Will your rug be placed in a high-traffic area, such as a kid’s playroom or hallway? If so, consider investing in one with a busy pattern and multiple colors, as it’s more likely to hide dirt, stains and foot traffic compared to a solid-colored rug with no pattern. 58

Seal It Up

Insulating your attic is an excellent way to save on energy usage and ease the strain on your pocketbook. It sounds simple enough: Add insulation and the savings roll in. However, an insulation project is much more complex than just blowing some insulation into the attic. Modern homes are elaborate, interactive systems. A large amount of thought and planning should go into an insulation project.

When installed correctly, insulation reduces heat loss and increases the comfort level of your home. Once insulation is in place, no ongoing maintenance is necessary. However, when installed incorrectly, the improper insulation will cause you to waste money and might even cause serious moisture damage to your home. Stop heat flow To prevent heat from flowing outdoors, you must fix air leaks and systems that cause air to be sucked out of a home, or enclose the home in a “thermal boundary.” Insulation stops the convective flow of air and, consequently, halts the flow of heat. Fill the attic space above the ceiling with fiberglass or cellulose insulation—the two types of insulation most commonly used in retrofitting a home during remodeling.

lower layer of existing insulation. If the space between ceiling joists (horizontal pieces that support the floor or ceiling) is filled with insulation, you can add batts parallel or perpendicular to the framing. If existing insulation is below the framing, fill in the voids, and blowing insulation over the top may be the best bet.

maintain or add ventilation Part of adding insulation to the attic is maintaining, or improving, adequate attic ventilation above the insulation. The ventilation should be divided between the overhangs and the ridge of the roof. When insulation is added, it is very important to keep the areas above soffit vents clear for air movement. If you block these areas with insulation, you can create

The insulation halts heat movement into the cold attic, but is a poor barrier when air is moving under even slight pressure, such as through the gaps around a light fixture. Seal any gaps that allow air to move from heated spaces into the attic. There are literally hundreds of holes in the thermal barrier, including electrical wiring, light fixtures, plumbing and the chimney. These openings must be sealed, caulked or foamed, or blocked by metal, wood or drywall.

moisture problems. In older homes, these

See your home as a system When evaluating your home’s thermal envelope, check the attic first. The insulation level must match your climate. For a cold climate, you need a level of approximately R-38, or about 12-15 inches of insulation. R-values measure how effective insulation is.

call a pro

Survey the attic for potential air leaks. Common culprits include the areas around chimneys, plumbing vents and wire penetrations. The trap door or stairway into the attic can be a major air channel. “Can” lights that penetrate the insulation also create big problems. You may need to hire a professional to help address these leaks.

are considering blowing in insulation

To find an air bypass into the attic, lift the fiber insulation around the hatch door or near plumbing or electrical wiring. If you see darkened insulation, you have just found an air leak into the attic. The fiber insulation is black because it is filtering out dirt as air passes into the attic. Air leaks and heat loss can occur in another area you may not think of: above the underside of an architectural feature, or above dropped soffits, such as those above kitchen cabinets. Often, these areas are not insulated or sealed. Areas above stairways, and around chimneys or major plumbing also are big offenders. Also, route all kitchen and bath exhaust fans to the outside, instead of into the attic. 60

areas should be checked, because often they are blocked with insulation.

It’s a good idea to have a professional evaluate the condition of your home and perform much of this work. If you or addressing can lights that penetrate the thermal barrier, you would benefit enormously from hiring a professional.

plants, hardscapes and other features can make the space a customized refuge where you can enjoy fresh air and a natural environment. Include in that refuge a fountain, pond and/or waterfall, and you’ve got a relaxing, tranquil getaway.

“A properly installed water feature will add value to your home and value to your quality of life,” says Randy Young, president of Tranquil Waterscape Designs LLC, an Aquascape-certified contractor. Perhaps you know you’d like a water feature in your landscape, but you don’t know what type is best for you. Or you already have a feature, but you’d like to revamp or add to it. Following are four expert-recommended projects to create the perfect waterscape for your yard. Rainwater-harvesting fountains While fountains are easy on the eyes and ears, the real beauty in rainwaterharvesting features is in their function. Surrounded by decorative gravel that absorbs the falling water, underneath these features are basins lined with rubber and special equipment to capture rainwater and circulate it through the fountain. Because the basin is underground, the water isn’t exposed to sunlight, eliminating the risk of algae growth. With these water features, homeowners can be environmentally friendly and avoid the worries of maintenance. Ponds Having a pond means having a hobby—while the maintenance may seem extensive, a pond is a mini ecosystem, attracting frogs, butterflies, birds and more. You can keep fish in the pond for added natural beauty and entertainment, and you can adorn the pond with aquatic plants. The required equipment you need to install a new pond includes a pump, liner and filter (both skimmer and biological).

ensuring quality If you’re having a contractor install the water feature for you, be sure to check references. It also helps to find a certified installer, such as a Certified Aquascape Contractor, who has to prove his or her workmanship and excellence in customer service before being certified. If you’re tackling the water feature on your own, purchase materials from a reputable water-garden retailer that has the knowledge and experience to help answer your questions about maintenance and installation. —Ryan Young, technical services supervisor, Aquascape Inc.

the bigger the better If you are looking to have fish and plants, make the pond as large as the space permits—it is amazing how much smaller a pond looks as it fills in

Underwater lighting Adding underwater lights to your water garden brings the feature to life after dusk, creating a gorgeous focal point in your outdoor-living area when entertaining guests at night. To complete this project, you should first determine if you need to install a new transformer or if you can use a low-voltage system that already exists in your garden. Daryl Toby, principal of AguaFina Gardens International, says that you can purchase lighting kits that have three to five lights and a transformer as a package deal, making it more cost effective than purchasing these elements separately.

UV filtration Upgrade your current pond filter to a UV-clarifying and filtration unit. The unit works by exposing water to ultraviolet light, which causes algae to stick together, making the algae large enough to be filtered. “The simple addition of UV filtration will minimize maintenance and simplify the homeowner’s quest for crystal-clear water,” says Doug Ward, president of GeoGlobal Partners, distributors of smartpond products. “The patented UV pumps from smartpond utilize cold-cathode UV technology with a long-lasting pump.”

the following as the 10 most common home maintenance problems. Be sure to inspect your home inside and out to avoid costly repairs. ➤ Improper surface grading/drainage, which is responsible for the most common of household maladies, including water penetration of the basement and crawlspace. ➤ Improper electrical wiring, including insufficient electrical service to the house, inadequate overload protection and dangerous wiring connections. ➤ Roof damage, including roof leakage, is caused by old or damaged shingles or improper flashing. Photo courtesy of Distinctive Remodeling Solutions, www.distinctiveremodeling.net

➤ Heating systems, including broken or malfunctioning operation controls, blocked chimneys, and unsafe exhaust

To maintain your home is to retain its value, keeping it in working order not only for convenience and comfort, but also for energy efficiency, aesthetics and to keep it marketable when you sell it. Take a look at the following exterior maintenance tips that will help keep your home in tip-top condition. Gutters Clean and repair them twice annually. Clogged or damaged gutters and downspouts can allow water to accumulate, which backs up into the roof, causing wood-rot damage and ice dams in the winter. Accumulating water also attracts a variety of pests and provides a breeding spot for mosquitoes. Consider investing in a gutter-protection system. Cracks Use caulk or other sealants to seal cracks in your home’s exterior and around windows, doors and pipes. Large openings should be stuffed with steel wool or wire mesh before sealing. Plan to re-caulk once every three years. Roofing Every fall and spring, check your roof. Make sure the shingles and all flashing around chimneys, gutters and valleys are in good repair. Ensure that the area where different materials meet is properly sealed with silicone caulk. Check fascia and soffits for water damage. Siding Clean your siding and check it for cracks. You can extend the life of your home’s exterior paint by cleaning your siding every couple of years. Choose a wash that will kill mold, mildew and algae, and rinse well after application. Be sure to check that the siding is free of punctures and cracks; if not, replace it.

disposal. ➤ Poor overall maintenance, including cracked, peeling and dirty painted surfaces; crumbling masonry; makeshift wiring and plumbing; and broken fixtures and appliances. ➤ Structure-related problems to components such as foundation walls, floor joists, rafters and window and door headers. ➤ Plumbing, including old and incompatible piping materials, as well as faulty fixtures and waste lines. ➤ Exteriors, such as windows, doors and wall surfaces, which are responsible for water and air penetration. ➤ Poor Ventilation, which is often caused by over-sealing ➤ Miscellaneous, which includes primarily interior components, often cosmetic in nature.

Paint Check the condition of your home’s exterior paint once a year. Clean the surface and repaint it every 5-10 years. 64

decordemon Wasted Spaces

How to make the most of every inch BY BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN Photos by Sarah Dorio

From dorm rooms to mansions, almost every home has some form of wasted space. Much like sofa-surfing friends, I believe everything and everyone under one roof must earn their keep. This goes for wasted spaces. I recently tackled two dead areas in a Kirkwood bonus room, proving that just a little bit of creativity, a modest budget and a handy human can put every square inch to work.

FEELING CORNERED?

Got a corner too tight for a sofa but too wide for a single chair? Solution: custom banquette. Before you gawk at the idea of custom, keep in mind that price is driven by materials. Believe it or not, this perfectly snug seating space cost about the same as a standard retail club chair. The floating frame was made from basic 2x4’s, then concealed with a custom skirt. Above the frame rests a 4-inch-thick foam cushion upholstered with a washable zipcover. Not only is it functional and nice to look at, but it’s practical, too.

66

HIDE AND SEEK

Not only did our snug banquette hold our study comfortably, but it’s got a generous amount of room for books, bags and clutterables below. By having a custom skirt across the front, spaces above and below were put to good use.

OUTSIDE IN

When it comes to high-traffic, upholstered pieces, indoor/ outdoor fabric is key. By using Sunbrella acrylic for both the cushion and the skirt, coffeesoaked study sessions are assured a passing grade.

Many new construction homes have alcoves facing an identity crisis. My rule of thumb: if you can’t figure out what to put in the alcove, build it out. By hiring a contractor for a half-day, we managed to give two Kirkwood newlyweds their own custom workspace—for less than $300. Contractor Brian Bell created simple floating shelves and a work top from stain-grade plywood, 2x4’s and 1x2 MDF. This odd 38-inch-wide space is now a fully functional mini-office for her to focus on grad school research and for him to focus on script writing.

positive for lead exposure over the last decade. Use of unleaded gasoline has been a factor, as has been the ban on lead in paint since 1978. One persistent problem, however, is the residue of old lead paint still present in homes built while lead was an accepted component in paint products.

connected to direct contact with surface lead paint. Children could easily ingest lead by chewing on painted surfaces or by nibbling chipped paint around the home. The

little ones followed a simple rule: if I can get my hands on it, it goes in my mouth. While that form of exposure has been reduced (not eliminated), the major issue today stems from exposure due to lead paint being disturbed during renovation. The EPA has addressed this concern through the Lead-Safe Certification Program. The Lead-Safe program is not new. Rules dealing with safe renovation practices were issued in April of 2008.

and Painting Implementation Program sets standards for renovation practice, for contractor and renovation firm education and certification, and for the consequences of non-compliance. EPA media releases make it clear that ignoring proper certification and procedures will, as they say, “cost you big time.” We’re pretty sure that’s not an idle threat. www.homeimprovementmag.com

10/12/10 11:44:21 AM

And we’re not just talking about huge renovation projects. Want to have a painting contractor prep and paint a couple of rooms in that ‘60s ranch you just bought? Disturbing the existing lead paint qualifies this job as requiring a certified contractor. Yes, there are minimum square foot exceptions, but they are so small as to be negligible—it does not take much work to disturb six square feet of wall or trim. You might say, “Hey, it’s my house; I can do what I want. I hired the contractor and he’ll follow my instructions.” Sounds strong, but as of July 2010, the ability of an owneroccupant to “opt-out” of the program was eliminated. Your contractor must be certified and must follow lead-safe procedures if your home falls in the target category. Like freedom, safety isn’t free, either. The EPA press release indicates an EPA estimate of $8 to $167 additional cost, per job, to implement the approved work practices. Not likely, as the Duke used to say. Just be sure your contractor itemizes the additional lead-safe costs on any proposal to protect yourself from mystery charges that might appear. Of course, if you properly qualified your contractor, they should do you right. For more information, go to the EPA website at www.epa.gov/lead. For any substantial renovation project, always consult your attorney on this issue, as well as “right-to-repair” and contractual concerns. november Tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden BY MARY KAY WOODWORTH

Atlanta’s November weather can be unpredictable— warm, sunny days one week, cold and rainy days the next. Summer annuals might still be flowering early this month, but count on our first “frost” date in November! This cooling trend makes November the best time of year to plant shrubs, trees and many perennials. Garden Maintenance

➤ If you’ve still got summer veggies planted, be sure to harvest them before the first hard freeze; incorporate lime and fertilizer in the annual and vegetable gardens for the next growing season.

➤ Apply that last round of fertilizer to your fescue lawn this month; then put the fertilizer and spreader away until late winter. If you’ve recently reseeded, make sure to remove fallen leaves from the lawn.

➤ Watch the weather report. If rain isn’t predicted, be sure to water newly planted trees, shrubs, lawn areas and planting beds. Make sure to turn off and FOR COLOR throughout winter,

winterize your irrigation system this month, too.

➤ Cut back perennials to 4 to 5 inches, but leave ornamental grasses to provide winter interest until spring.

your own compost. Use grass clippings, fall leaves and kitchen waste to create your own nutrient-rich soil amendments. Your county extension agent has plenty of information to get you started.

➤ Remove the leaves and debris that fall from perennials, deciduous shrubs and trees so that insects and disease can’t overwinter. Replace with fresh mulch.

➤ Once the first frost hits, carefully remove caladiums, cannas and dahlias from the ground. Bring them inside and allow them to dry. Store them in peat moss or vermiculite in a cool, dark spot until next spring.

➤ If you still have houseplants outside on your patio, watch the thermometer. Bring them inside if it’s 50

degrees or below, and make sure they are situated in a spot where they’ll receive as much sunlight as possible as lower light days begin.

is coming your way…

➤ Think ahead to spring and plant spring-blooming bulbs such as daffodil, crocus, hyacinth and tulips in late November. Use a bulb fertilizer for magnificent flowers once warmer weather returns.

➤ Roses can be planted in early November. Be sure to water them at planting and throughout the winter, but wait until March to fertilize.

Expert Tips, News and Happenings from Atlanta’s Home Improvement Community COMPILED BY SHELBY STEVENS

Expert Q&A

What is the odor that comes from my heater when I turn it on for the first time in the fall and winter months? Is something wrong?

When your system has been sitting idle or in the cooling mode of operation, it’s perfectly normal to notice odd odors when you first turn on your heat. Yes, this includes a burning smell. Be cautious, though. If the smell is consistent and doesn’t go away after running the heat for a few hours, you may want to call a professional to check out your system and make sure it’s safe to operate. You can stop odors by turning on the heat once a month and letting it run for five minutes. It’s also recommended to have an agreement with a professional HVAC company to service your equipment at least twice per year.

n Nov. 19, 2006, home entertainment as we knew it changed. Though the release of the Nintendo Wii gaming console was

just 4 years ago, the resulting advent of virtual gaming and fitness happened so quickly, it seems like it’s been ages since video gam-

ing was only popular among couch potatoes. Now, you can work out, compete in sporting events, race, box, canoe and much more—all from the comfort of your

home and using many of the same components you use to watch TV and movies, stream Internet videos and listen to music.

Naturally, these changes in home entertainment have changed the way

residential media rooms are designed. More multi-purposed than ever, these

all-in-one spaces are where families spend most of their free time, which also increases the importance of function in the room’s design.

A backyard shed is a great place for stashing supplies

I

s your basement or garage overflowing with tools, sports equipment

and gardening supplies? Sometimes you just need a little extra space for stowing all those outdoor extras, and a storage shed may be the

answer. Whether you choose a shed that’s custom-designed for your

needs or decide to go with a pre-designed kit, you can create a new, wellorganized space for whatever it is you need to stash outdoors.

• ROLLING CART, DESK AND LOCKER/BENCH Designed and detailed by Kitchen Connections

Wanting a more updated, open and unique kitchen, the owners of this Dunwoody home called on the experts at Kitchen Connections LLC to renovate their space into the kitchen of their dreams. Prior to the makeover, the kitchen was dated and cramped, and featured a peninsula, island and full soffit along the top of the original cabinets. While the appliances had been updated to stainless steel, they did the kitchen little justice; the white box cabinets had been faux painted with glaze, and the elements simply didn’t combine. To increase both functionality and style, the team at Kitchen Connections combined a mix of traditional elements by removing the soffit and installing taller cabinets with a crown. The peninsula, kitchen desk and pantry were also removed, creating a free-flowing floorplan into the breakfast nook and making room for a new homework space and the installation of bookcases and two drop-leaf desks. The resulting makeover combines comfort and coziness with a workspace for food prep and studying.
