With technology today, accessing the web, video, music and more is as easy as reaching into our pocket or purse. Shouldn’t our homes offer the same convenience? They can. Home entertainment technology has kept pace with our busy and ever-changing lifestyles, enabling us to enjoy larger and higher definition televisions and theater-quality sound in any room. At the touch of a button, home automation systems can be programmed to dim the lights, close the shades and play a new release, turning a living room into a movie theater. While dedicated home theater rooms still offer a major wow factor and advanced capabilities, media rooms are a big trend because so much of the technology is wireless or easy to conceal with panels and other treatments. The price point for such systems have come down too, making streaming a favorite TV show or YouTube clip a reality for more and more homeowners. On top of that, media rooms can be located anywhere in the home, from the main living area near the kitchen to the kids’ play area upstairs to outdoor living spaces. It’s all about creating an experience that suits your lifestyle.

You don’t have to be a techie to enjoy our feature on home entertainment on page 22, where you’ll find tips for a basic media room setup—as well as advanced options— and maybe even a few gadgets for your wish list. However, you should consult a professional, from an organization such as the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA), for any projects that involve a significant investment or require specialized knowledge such as electrical work. The pros can help you select the best systems for your space and safely set it up.

Expert Q&A

Atlanta Decorative Arts Center Opens Doors to General Public For the first time in 50 years, the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) has opened its doors to the public, making it the last design center in the U.S. to do so. “Until now, only licensed design professionals have been able to access and take advantage of our showroom facility,” says Katie Belveal, ADAC general manager. “By giving a peek behind our curtain, if you will, more design enthusiasts will be able to experience ADAC and create that lifestyle at home or elsewhere.” The 550,000 square-foot interior design product showroom located in Buckhead kicked off the change with a series of grand opening events and seminars, which included showroom tours and talks from lifestyle experts. More events will be held in November. For more information, visit www.adacatlanta.com.

Q: A:

NARI Atlanta Partners with Rebuilding Together To Fix Up Homes of Low-Income Families NARI Atlanta, the local chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, www.nariatlanta.org, has selected Rebuilding Together Atlanta, www.rebuildingtogether-atlanta.org, as its lead charity. Rebuilding Together Atlanta is an affiliate of the nation’s largest volunteer home repair organization and works with low-income homeowners—particularly older adults, people with disabilities and multigenerational families—in the City of Atlanta as well as in Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb and Gwinnett Counties. Since its inception in 1992, the group has renovated hundreds of homes, insulated 50 attics and repaired 250 homes and five community centers in the Atlanta area. Rebuilding Together Atlanta also works with volunteers from the community to help with improvement projects, participating in National Rebuilding Day on the last Saturday in April each year. For more information, visit www.rebuildingtogether-atlanta.org. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

How can I make my home look bigger, brighter and better? Without either adding on or adding up and without “clear-cutting” the interior walls? Yes, possible, and desirable in many cases in order to convert a drafty, outdated and sometimes dark home into a comfortable, modern residence. Bigger, by selectively opening spaces to one another yet providing subtle spatial definitions like ceiling-height changes, bookcases and even columns. Better, by updating systems to EarthCraft House and Energy Star levels and sealing/insulating the home thoroughly and by thoughtfully designing multiuse spaces. Brighter, by bringing in natural light where possible as well as providing an energyefficient and welldesigned lighting plan and by multiplying light with the appropriate wall, floor and ceiling surfaces and color palette. —William Fadul, MOSAIC Group [Architects and Remodelers], www. mosaicgroupatlanta. com

homefront Epic Development Wins Master Design Award from Qualified Remodeler Epic Development, an Atlanta-based full-service residential and lightcommercial contractor, has won bronze in Qualified Remodeler’s Master Design Award competition in the category of Whole-House Renovation $200,000-$500,000. The award-winning project is a completely rejuvenated 3,800-square-foot home, originally built in 1970, which sits on an acre of land off West Paces Ferry Road in Atlanta. “We took a 1970s modern and completely redesigned the second floor roof, creating a different style for the home,” says Rick Bennett, the firm’s director of design and construction. The home, with an open floor plan and large windows, decks and outdoor living areas, overlooks a creek and 25-foot waterfall. For more information, visit www.epicdevelopment.com. s 2011 drew to a close, film executives picked up their copies of The Hollywood Reporter to learn that just 1.28 billion people went to the movies that year. The number—down 4.4 percent from the previous year—was the lowest since 1995.

Americans are embracing the home theater and entertainment boom. Why hire a babysitter, drive across town, pay rising ticket costs, sit through countless ads and previews and put up with in-movie cell phone use when a family can easily replicate, customize and even improve upon the movietheater experience without ever leaving home?

Sharp has rolled out the LC-80LE632U, an 80inch behemoth with 1080p resolution. Built-in WiFi provides seamless support for an array of apps including Netflix. The model has been so popular that Sharp has announced the Aquos LC90LE745U, a 90-inch model billed as “the world’s largest LED TV.” It has built-in WiFi and full HD Active 3-D.

install infrastructure powerful enough to handle wireless and other needs. Briesemeister’s company is seeing an uptick in requests for web browsing in the theater or the primary TV-viewing space of the home. “Families are gathering to watch YouTube videos or research a vacation destination together, not just watch a blockbuster hit,” he explains. Strict theaters might employ soundproofing, blackout shades, dimmers and motorized screens while flexible spaces can account for multiple formats and users. In the “play area” of CEDIA’s Future Technology Pavilion at its 2012 exposition, CEDIA partners recently built an immersive video room that can identify the occupant, his/her likes and dislikes and display the appropriate content for that user. Abplanalp’s company has found that the best types of products in a multifunctioning home entertainment space are those that fit aesthetically but retain “the performance and flexibility to integrate in a wide range of architecture and design styles.” Furniture, lighting and equipment can all morph as the room’s purpose shifts. Concealed speakers (in walls or ceilings) and hidden screens (that raise with motors or lie behind art) are all good options. Ferebee says he recommends drapes to cover screens because they have a really nice feel to them, plus they can be automated to open when a movie starts.

An alternative to home automation is using a wireless Internet connection to remotely control a home theater system. fantastic movie experience. Ferebee says he also is waiting to see how 3-D progresses, given many manufacturers are looking for ways to provide a 3-D viewing experience without having to wear 3-D glasses. Overall, don’t rush into a home theater install; rather, take the time to research, plan and design your system with your providers. “The most important part of the process is the planning,” Herold says. “Since this is usually a big investment of both money and time, [homeowners] should work with someone with experience who they feel can provide the advice, execution and support of a room they will get a lot of use out of.” Ferebee agrees, saying that homeowners should be clear about the function of a home theater space. “It’s all about finding out what’s important to [homeowners,]” he says. Do they plan to watch movies? Stream? Want great audio quality? “Design a system from there with the budget in mind,” Ferebee says. “Make sure your needs and wants are being met.” Editorial Resources begin on page 69.

Streaming Media TVs aren’t just for viewing television programs anymore. Now, they stream movies, music and Internet clips straight into your living room or home theater. Play:5 and Play:3 devices are popular parts to the Sonos HiFi wireless audio system that is leading the way for audiophiles, while the Connect turns a home theater into a music-streaming machine controllable by a tablet. The quality of streaming TV continues to rise thanks to the competition between Hulu, Netflix, Vudu, AppleTV, Amazon, Roku and others. NetGear’s new NeoTV ProHD provides online content at 1080p HD. A well-designed WiFi network or a hard-wired broadband connection are suggested. Happy surfing! ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT NOVEMBER 2012

cozy fireplace with flickering flames is a welcome sight on a chilly day. For centuries, the hearth has been a symbol of welcoming and a centerpiece of the home. The inviting warmth draws family and friends together. Your mantel, too, is a place to showcase prized possessions. Read on for the hottest ideas in fireplace design and tips on everything from building materials to accessories. No detail is too small on the quest to create the best hearth for your home.

important purchase that sets the atmosphere in a large great room, but not nearly as wise in a bedroom or bath. In those locations, I would recommend a gas fireplace with its ease of maintenance and instant flame. When it is time to retire at night, the fire is off in a second.”

Gas, wood or electric?

Rick Goldstein, architect and co-owner of MOSAIC Group [Architects & Remodelers], www.mosaicgroupatlanta. com, confirms this distinction. “There are two camps in the fireplace area. Those that are traditionalists need to burn wood and demand a roaring fire that produces heat. The other camp hates the mess and wants a convenient fireplace that can be turned on with a push of a button.”

Judy Mozen, president of Handcrafted Homes, Inc., www.handcraftedhomes-inc. com, describes the differences between gas and wood. “A woodburning fireplace is great! There is nothing like the crackling of the fire and the well-seasoned oak smell. However, be sure you are committed to acquiring and storing the wood, along with cleaning the fireplace and the flue. It would be considered an

Two-Way Fireplaces A two-way fireplace is an elegant room divider, offering 360 degrees of ambience. A two-way adds dimensionality and openness, allowing different living spaces to be staged around the same hearth. Rooms with different functions, such as a living and dining room or bedroom and bath, will benefit from a shared fireplace. Dale Contant, of Atlanta Design & Build, says many two-way fireplaces come pre-made. Contant suggests placing them in a large open room like a basement or a family room, especially if you have built an addition. 40

Vented or vent-free? Experts are divided on the risks and benefits of vent-free fireplaces. According to Mozen, “After my education to become a Green Certified professional with NARI (the National Association of the Remodeling Industry), I have come to the conclusion that there is never a time for a homeowner to use a vent-free fireplace. Essentially, they are breathing whatever is not vented to the outside.” Dale Contant, founder of Atlanta Design & Build, www.atlantadesignbuild.com, agrees. “Be cautious about a vent-free fireplace. Customers have complained that they smell gas when using a ventfree fireplace.” Mary Battle, of Battle Renovations, www.battlerenovations.com, recommends choosing vent-free for electric fireplaces because they eliminate the cost and inconvenience of removing exhaust from the home’s interior. Andrew Stilwell,

of The Fireplace Company, www. thefireplacecompany.com, says “nonvented fireplaces offer customers new design options when renovating, like small, loft-style fireplaces or add-ons with pre-made mantles and hearths.”

Mantels and motifs The decor surrounding a fireplace is just as important as the fire inside. According to Contant, wood is the most popular mantel material, outfitted with crowns, corbels and columns for a traditional look. Reclaimed wood beams make striking mantels. Stone is a fun throwback material, says Contant, and man-made stones are looking more realistic than ever. They are also lighter and easier to work with than natural stones. For an Old World look, choose limestone or sandstone. Contant has noticed that the Atlanta market is more traditional, with hearths 10 to 12 inches off the floor. For a more modern look, he recommends chic faces, clean lines and no hearth

or mantel. Stilwell uses marble, stacked stone, granite and slate for his customers’ mantels and hearths. Wright Marshall, of Revival Construction, Inc., www. revivalconstruction.com, likes to outfit masonry fireplaces with timber mantels. These typically are salvaged or hand-hewn oak or pine. Molly Portis, of Portis Building & Interiors, Inc., www.portisbuilding.com, says “people are going for simpler mantles even when we tie them into a surrounding bookcase. We also usually remove the big hearth and take it down to the floor to give more space.” To make a dramatic statement, continue the motif of the mantel or hearth up to the ceiling.

Hot, hot, hot trends Innovative building materials Portis is seeing “many interior fireplaces with split-face stone or stone-onmesh backing, found at many big tile companies. Since it is very thin,

you can apply it over old brick. It takes up a lot less space and is less messy than full stone.” Portis also recommends painting the inside of a fireplace with black fire-proof paint to cover old brick. Mozen recommends both brushed and polished stainless steel for contemporary fireplaces and notes, “we have been using cleaner looks lately, especially sheetrock expressions with only a small amount of non-combustible material near the fireplace box.”

Tabletop fireplaces Photo courtesy of Graystone Design and Build

Floor-to-ceiling fireplaces with standard chimneys are not the only implementations for interiors. Tabletop fireplaces are a new and innovative choice. Experts are cautious about tabletop fireplaces for the same reasons as vent-free models. Mozen recommends an indoor/outdoor space, such as a screened porch or patio room, to control venting.

Flat-screen TVs mounted on or near a fireplace are an increasingly popular option. In a family room, the TV brings added attention to fireplace details and creates a centralized focal point in the space. Cynthia Pararo, of Pineapple House Interior Design, www. pineapplehouse.com, hid a TV behind paneled cabinetry to keep a refined, romantic feel in a master bedroom. Built-in cabinetry and shelving around a fireplace allow the full wall to be used for entertaining. The sky is the limit when choosing materials and accessories for indoor fireplaces. No matter what statement you wish to make, a fireplace can be an expression of your style. ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT NOVEMBER 2012

Stylish log racks are an elegant storage solution, keeping extra logs close at hand. Beautifully crafted fireplace tools provide extra sophistication. Fireplace doors and screens are works of art unto themselves. Multiple looks are possible, including rustic mountain cabin, traditional, missionstyle and modern-andminimal. Decorative handles and mesh curtains complete the look.

enthusiasts, take heart! There’s plenty you can do in the winter months, including planting new things. “Most all trees and shrubs benefit from planting in the late fall and winter months,” says Todd Guilmette, of Unique Environmental Landscapes, www.unique-environmental.com, in Mableton. “The mild to cold temperatures as well as winter precipitation allow them to establish root systems before growing out their spring foliage and flowers.” And if you need some color to brighten up the cooler months, there are ways to incorporate plenty into your yard. “There are some very colorful and exciting plants that can be introduced into the winter landscape,” says Rick

Growing grass

Getting ready for spring

Because it’s often the first thing people notice about your yard, grass is another important landscaping feature to keep in mind in winter. If you want to use this time to install new grass, fescue is a good choice. “As a sod supplier, fescue sod is the most popular grass to install during the winter months,” says Claire Kimbell, of North Georgia Turf, www. ngturf.com, in Whitesburg. “October and November are the optimal months to install fescue, but it can be installed in other months as well.” Kimbell also points out that many sod varieties can be planted in the winter, and all warmseason grasses that you plant in winter should be guaranteed to green up in the spring.

Winter can actually be the best time to get some prep work done for spring. And as a bonus, you’ll be able to work without sweating away in the hot sun! First, if you want to do a little rearranging of your shrubs, or you want to move a small tree from the backyard to the front, now’s the time. “Winter is the best time for transplanting, and early winter is even better,” says Shane LeBlanc, of Selective Designs, www.selectivedesigns.com, in Peachtree City.

For those who have grass already planted, maintenance is important to help it look its best when warmer weather rolls around. “For warmseason turf grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda, set a mower on the lowest level and ‘scalp’ the grass to remove as much thatch—dead, straw-colored grass—as possible just when new growth is beginning to show from the roots,” says Dixie Speck, of Solterra Landscape, www.solterralandscape. com, in Sandy Springs.

Pruning also is one of the most important winter maintenance tasks. “Deep, renovation pruning is best done this time of year,” says John Kenna, of Water, Color & Stone Inc., www.watercolorstone.com. “Prune overgrown shrubs, and plant trees

Edibles Winter doesn’t mean saying goodbye to your edible garden!

Rosemary

Some popular edible winter plants include kale, colorful cabbages, mustards and chards. And don’t rule out herbs, either! “Rosemary has surprising flowers that adorn the plant in winter, and it is an excellent herb, of course,” says Todd Guilmette, of Unique Environmental Landscapes, www.unique-environmental.com, in Mableton. and perennials.” Pruning your trees and shrubs will help tame your garden and keep it in shape. You can trim back evergreens and remove dead branches from trees. Don’t prune azaleas or other early-spring bloomers, though— that may keep them from blooming come spring. It’s also a good to time to apply preemergent weed killers to your lawn. “Pre-emergents will help suppress the winter weeds and fescue in warmseason grasses,” says Mark Schisler, of Legacy Landscapes Inc., www. legacylandscapes.com, in Marietta. Just be sure to buy the proper kind for your lawn, and read the label carefully! One of the most important things to do in winter: Don’t forget to apply mulch for the upcoming spring. Mulching keeps moisture in the ground and around the roots of your plants, which are always growing, even when the above-ground part of the plant might not be. “If you are not planting winter annuals and want to protect the existing perennials, simply add a little bit of fresh topsoil around them and mulch the beds with two to three inches of shredded pine bark, pinestraw, etc.,” says Neil Kain, of Kain Landscape Inc., www.kainlandscape.com, in Chamblee.

Photo courtesy of Outside Landscape Group

Hardscapes Don’t forget about hardscapes for winter fun! Patios, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens and even an outdoor hot tub all add interest to landscapes year-round and will help draw you into the great outdoors. “Consider a deck or patio space with a covered arbor and accent exterior curtains that offer some protection from a cool winter breeze,” says Rick Kaldrovics, of Outside Landscape Group, www.outsidelandscapegroup.com, in Alpharetta. “We have built wonderful winter spaces that our clients use to celebrate a New Year’s Eve party in the garden.” Winter is also a good time for hardscape maintenance. “Winterizing is also very important for hardscapes, such as a stone path or walkway, which can be relatively simple,” says Neil Kain of Kain Landscape Inc. in Chamblee. “Whether it is dry laid on aggregate, sand or soil, or if it is laid in a bed of concrete and mortar, it is best to pressure wash the stones prior to the first freeze. Be careful with the pressure washer around the edges where delicate plant material may be. This will get the algae or moss off for the winter.” www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

1112_046-053_Winterwonderland.indd 51

Just because it’s cold out, you can’t forget about watering! “Since irrigation systems are shut off during the winter, one important maintenance item that most do not consider during the winter season is plants’ water needs— especially evergreen plants,” says Speck. “If the winter season is dry and a plant that has been in the ground for less than three years experiences more than two weeks with no rain, it’s roots can dry out and kill the plant. Watering with a hose in this situation could be critical to survival of newly installed plants.” And if you’re just plain tired of winter, take advantage of the colder months to plan a new spring landscape! Once spring rolls around, you can have an interesting, well-maintained yard that’s ready to burst into color. Editorial Resources begin on page 69.

november Tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden BY MARY KAY WOODWORTH

November weather can be unpredictable; warm and sunny one week, cold and rain the next. Atlanta’s first frost is usually in midNovember, so enjoy the last of the warm-season annuals early in the month! November’s cooler weather makes this the best time of year to plant shrubs, trees and many perennials. Garden Maintenance

Fertilize fescue lawns for a second time (and again in February and April). Warm-season grasses won’t require fertilizer until spring.

Control winter weeds in turf (chickweed, violets, wild onions) by hand pulling or spot spraying.

Watch the weather report; if rain isn’t in the forecast, regularly water newly planted trees, shrubs, lawn areas and planting beds. Make sure to turn off and winterize your irrigation system this month, too.

Perennials can be cut to 4-5 inches, but leave ornamental grasses to provide winter interest until spring.

➤ FOR COLOR THROUGHOUT THE WINTER MONTHS,

plant violas, pansies, dianthus, snapdragons and ornamental kale 54

10/5/12 6:15 PM

Remove the leaves and debris that fall from perennials and deciduous shrubs and trees so that insects and disease can’t overwinter. Replace with fresh mulch.

Once nighttime temperatures hit 50º or below, it’s time to bring houseplants inside for the winter. as possible and don’t over-water.

Clean, sharpen and oil your gardening tools! Before storing for the winter, drain gasoline from your lawn mower and make sure all parts are spic and span. You’ll be happy you did it now when springtime rolls around.

What To Plant

Now’s the time to plant colorful, cool-weather annuals and biennials. Plant violas, pansies, dianthus, snapdragons and ornamental kale for color throughout the winter months—fertilize and water regularly. Parsley, rosemary and other edible plants look great mixed in with annual flowers.

Once cool weather arrives, it’s the best time to plant spring-blooming bulbs such as daffodil, crocus, hyacinth and tulips. Add fertilizer as you dig the planting beds. Consider adding bulbs to containers and beds of winter annuals, too.

Are you satisfied with your landscape all year long? If not, add four-season interest to the garden by planting trees and shrubs that perform month after month. For interest year-round, consider these 2012 Georgia Gold Medal winners: shrub: Rabbiteye Blueberry (Vaccinium virgatum (ashei)); tree: Coral Bark Maple (Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’); native plant: Athens Sweetshrub (Calycanthus floridus ‘Athens’). Look for more winners at www.georgiagoldmedalplants.com.

Roses can be planted in early November. Be sure to water them at planting and throughout the winter, but wait until March to fertilize.

WINDOWS & DOORS

Open to the Possibilities Interior door design options

➤ Door Jamb

BY KATHY KANTORSKI

Heighten your home’s design with the array of fabulous options in interior doors available today. Need to add some extra oomph to your guest bedroom? Want a great transition element between the living and dining areas? Here’s a quick guide to your options.

1

Panel doors The traditional interior-door style, panel doors offer the most privacy of all interiordoor options, and can be stained or painted any color allowing virtually limitless design choices. To further the choices, the doors also come in several styles, varying by the number and shapes of panels on the door. Glass-panel doors Up the design ante with glass-panel doors, which are made of wood or a composite material, but have one or several glass-panel inserts, allowing you to see through the door. The glass panels can be etched, stained, leaded or frosted and can have words or designs printed on the surface. A popular option in today’s homes is the glass-panel door that has an etched design and has “Pantry” or “Laundry Room” printed on the glass. These doors are great for homes that don’t have a lot of windows, as they allow daylight to filter through and illuminate dark hallways. French doors with glass panels are also a popular option for sunrooms and separating connected spaces, like the living and dining rooms or the office.

2

Louver doors With the appearance of an enlarged shutter, louver doors are a popular bathroom and linen-closet option, as they allow air to circulate through when closed. These doors, like panel doors, can be stained or painted virtually any color, though the most common colors are natural wood and white.

types of pre-hung doors ➤ Fully Assembled Usually seen in advertisements, the door jambs are fastened together and already attached to the door and door stop.

➤ Partially Assembled The most common option, these come with the door attached to the jamb, but the stop is separate.

➤ Knocked Down The components arrive unattached. This is useful when you want to stain or paint the door prior to assembly.

➤ Unfinished vs. Pre-finished This refers to the state of the components when they arrive. A prefinished door will already be sanded, primed and stained or painted. —Kudzu.com

look for the UL As with any piece of electrical equipment, safety is an issue with exterior lighting. When purchasing a fixture, look for the UL (Underwriter Laboratories) certification to ensure that the product you’re purchasing has been tested for safety measures. Learn more about the UL safety certification program at www.ul.com.

As the outdoor living trend continues to rise and homeowners work to make their yard an extension of their home, lighting is an important factor. Here, we’ve compiled our favorite tips and trends for lighting your property. Rules of thumb Three rules of thumb for lighting your home’s exterior are: 1. Light what you paid for. Whether it is architecture, the home itself, statues or landscaping, you probably invested more into it because of curb appeal. When you light, you are simply extending the enjoyment of those things that you paid for. 2. More light is not necessarily better. Using varying levels of light is important— to throw bright light on the entire property does not create any elegance. 3. Invest more in your components and maintenance. No matter what you install, Mother Nature will take her toll. You can get inexpensive fixtures and transformers at any home-improvement store, but, as the old adage goes, “you get what you paid for.” Seek top-quality fixtures with extended warranties and professional installers that offer ongoing maintenance. Unique ideas • i e rive ay at ig ting an sensor ontro e se rity s ot ig ts are obvious choices, a more modern idea is to embed LED brick lights into brickpaver areas, like the driveway, walkway or patio. • et o vo tage an s a e ig ts on a i a e transfor er t at an e controlled (through an astronomical timeclock) to come on at low intensity and gradually grow brighter as natural sunlight subsides. • t t yo r e it s a ig ts t at t n er an rai s or ste s or ig ts t at mount to posts or pillars, adding visual drama and an element of safety. These can be installed in as little as 2 hours for 10 lights—a quick project with lasting effects. Choose solar LED lights to avoid wiring issues and save energy. • o ase gar ens it area ig ts or e ig ts aro n s r s to reate artistic flair and add dimension. • a t re t e ea ty of aters a es it n er ater ig ts t at i ee yo mesmerized long into the night. 60

feature the flame “There’s no cooler lighting element than a roaring fire,” says Brian Powell, founder of Yardshare.com, a social-networking site for gardening and DIY outdoor enthusiasts. “Flames are as dramatic and as eye-catching as it gets.” Powell recommends a fire pit centerpiece or cauldrons of fire along the perimeter of an outdoor-living area.

Expert Q&A

Atlanta Decorative Arts Center Opens Doors to General Public

For the first time in 50 years, the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) has opened its doors to the public, making it the last design center in the U.S.

NARI Atlanta Partners with Rebuilding Together To Fix Up Homes of Low-Income Families

NARI Atlanta, the local chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, www.nariatlanta.org, has selected Rebuilding Together Atlanta, www.rebuildingtogether-atlanta.org, as its lead charity.

Q:

—William Fadul, MOSAIC Group [Architects and Remodelers], www. mosaicgroupatlanta. com

s 2011 drew to a close, film executives picked up their copies of The Hollywood Reporter to learn that just 1.28 billion people went to the movies that year. The number—down 4.4 percent from the previous year—was the lowest since 1995.

Americans are embracing the home theater and entertainment boom. Why hire a babysitter, drive across town, pay rising ticket costs, sit through countless ads and previews and put up with in-movie cell phone use when a family can easily replicate, customize and even improve upon the movietheater experience without ever leaving home?

important purchase that sets the atmosphere in a large great room, but not nearly as wise in a bedroom or bath.

It would be considered an

gardening enthusiasts, take heart!

There’s plenty you can do in the winter

months, including planting new things. “Most all trees and shrubs benefit from planting in the late fall and

Seeking an updated kitchen and living room in their 1945 home, these Buckhead homeowners contacted Glazer Design and Construction for their addition and renovation. By completely relocating the kitchen and adding 1,000 additional square feet, the Glazer team created space for a large island and second serving counter and bar. Heated porcelain tile floors visually connect the kitchen and adjacent living room. The natural light from two sets of French doors and a large window highlights the new architectural elements, including a stone fireplace, built-in storage and coffered ceiling. Eco-friendly features of the EarthCraft-certified renovation include spray-foam insulation, a tankless water heater and highefficiency HVAC units.
