LAURIE BURNS DESIGN Atlanta native Laurie Burns, owner of Laurie Burns Design, pulled together this winning 1910 farmhouse kitchen renovation by melding
elements of copper and stainless steel, soft-hued subway tile and vintage lighting, reflective of her affinity for mixing old and new design items. The combination of green accents and ontrend bohemian vibes hints at her passion for floral design. Laurie finds inspiration in many sources, from movie sets to vintage styles to the fashion industry. “I love getting lost in so many resources and vendors while hunting for the perfect piece—whether it’s furniture, tile, paint colors, fabric or lighting,” she says. “And I love seeing my clients get as excited as I am.” Burns brought together plenty of “perfect pieces” to create this timeless space. SUNDOG DESIGN STUDIO During her winning kitchen project, Kathy Tonner, ASID, RID, founder and principal of SunDog Design Studio, LLC, encountered a challenge frequently met by designers—the divergent tastes and needs of the couple for whom she designed the space. She explains that one loves to cook and appreciates a modern style, while the other loves to socialize and prefers a traditional look. Tonner’s resulting classic, fresh kitchen design was achieved through clever reimagining of the space, including a relocation of the kitchen to the existing den and converting the original kitchen to a keeping room with a butler’s pantry.
Tonner says she enjoys problem solving and “taking gutted ‘bare bones’ and then creating a beautiful, livable finished project.” Thanks to the reworking of this kitchen, both clients’ needs were met—the couple can both cook and socialize with guests in their new space. Design principals Barbara Elliott and Jennifer Ward-Woods, of Decorating Den Interiors/Sisters and Company, solved the awkward flow of their client’s master suite by flipping the closet and bathroom to create a modern bath space with traditional lines. “The real challenge was to create a spacious feel to the smaller new bath,” says Barbara. To open up the space, an archway between the slipper-shaped tub and the closet helped create the illusion of abundance; then the designers selected finishes that would impart a luxurious, but clean, feel. This transformation came about using the sisters’ proven design process: make it functional, fun and fabulous. “Each
completed project needs an element of ‘wow,’” Jennifer enthuses— and with the Florence chandelier, molding and arches, this bathroom meets that expectation.

Free-standing tubs come in many designs, sizes and materials, depending on the style you prefer and your budget. Be prepared— the price may give you sticker shock, as most are in the $2,000 to $5,000 range. Of course, you will not have to spend money on materials and labor to build a deck around a free-standing tub, but that will only save you a few hundred dollars. You should also factor in the cost of demolition, a plumber, a carpenter (if the ceiling below the bathroom will need to be removed to access the pipes) and new flooring.

Plumb It! Plumbing is a big factor (and cost) in changing to a free-standing tub. The plumbing for these tubs is visible, unlike that of other tubs. The drain and water pipes must be run up from beneath the floor, so you’ll have to consider how accessible and involved it is to reroute the plumbing. You should also consider how easy or difficult this will be while deciding on where to put your tub. There may be a lot of cutting and drilling through beams in order to relocate the plumbing. In most cases, the plumbing to retrofit a standard tub to a free-standing tub ranges between $2,000 to $3,000.
