It is important to inspect your flashing. Flashing is an extra-protective part of your roof designed to direct water to run off the slope of the roof. What is the U-factor and what do I need to know about it?

The U-factor indicates how well a window keeps heat inside your home. The lower the number, the better the insulating qualities. This is important in colder regions. Just Peter Morrison as important is the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), which measures how much radiant heat a window allows into your house. The lower the number, the less heat is allowed in, which is important in warmer regions or summer months.

ASPARAGUS, GOAT CHEESE, MUSHROOM, AND BASIL FRITTATA Servings: 6 8 eggs
1 cup Parmesan cheese, shaved
½ cup fresh basil, chopped and divided
2 cups wild mushroom mix
½ pound asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
½ cup red onions, sliced
1 cup milk
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup goat cheese, crumbled
3 tablespoons olive oil
Preheat oven to 375 F. In a pan, add olive oil and sauté mushrooms and asparagus for 10 minutes. Set aside. In a bowl, beat eggs, then add sautéed mushrooms, asparagus, ½ cup Parmesan cheese, ½ cup goat cheese crumbles, and 1 cup milk. Add salt and pepper to taste. Coat the inside of a 7-by-11-inch baking dish with olive oil. Pour the mixture into the baking dish. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. ERICA KEY

The Green Acres Shed “I wanted a quiet, peaceful place to sit and read, and watch my horses play,” says Sheila Holmberg. Her 8-by-10 open shed overlooks a pasture on her 80-acre property. The shed’s walls are made from antique doors and windows purchased at Copperwood Company in Cartersville. The floor is comprised of old railroad ties. The shed features one lone bench. “I bought it and then had my husband build my she shed around it!”

This 12-by-12 sanctuary-themed shed sits on the back upper-level terrace of HGTV host Egypt Sherrod’s home. “I wanted a space to relax and create. No husband, no kids allowed.” The interior includes Native American elements like dream catchers, a nod to Sherrod’s Narragansett Indian heritage. “I thought it would be fun to incorporate my favorite iced tea, Gold Peak® Real Brewed Tea, into the theme, so I opted to call it a tea shed.”

The Vintage Shed Laura Garrett wanted a she shed with character, so she started perusing estate sales for vintage and salvage items. Garrett’s husband and son began constructing her 8-by-12 shed, which overlooks a backyard pond on her property, based solely on a vague idea and photos of other sheds. “I intend to use it as my quiet getaway—and to host mimosa parties! I haven’t decided yet, but I’m leaning toward naming her Mimosa Cottage.”

the heart of home improvement A custom bedroom makeover for a deserving child What started out as a hobby doing renovations after work and on the weekends grew into a fast-paced, full-time nonprofit for Peter and Holly Ranney. Created in 2012, Sunshine on a Ranney Day partners with about 30 companies to create room makeovers for children with long-term illnesses. As a proud supporter of the nonprofit’s mission, Jim Walker, owner of Copper Sky Renovations, donated his time (alongside the company’s designers Meka Jones and Jaime Dupes) and services to help revamp 5-year-old Fenton McEvoy’s Morningside bedroom. In 2018, Fenton was diagnosed with acute flaccid myelitis, a rare disease that affects the nervous system—particularly, the spinal cord. He was in need

by the family’s Tybee Island vacations, the team painted the bedroom’s walls white and added an accent wall with sky blue stripes to make the space feel brighter. They also wallpapered the ceiling and added nautical details to pay tribute to those special trips. In addition, they replaced the carpet with luxury vinyl tile to give Fenton better mobility with his wheelchair, added a trundle bed so his parents or caretaker can have a place to rest during Fenton’s around-the-clock care, and installed additional outlets for therapy equipment. In 2015, Courtney Stewart founded the Right Hand Foundation, a nonprofit whose mission is to support women and children’s shelters and group homes in the Atlanta area through financial donations, mentoring programs, and more. The continued community give-back has set the stage for the inauguration of Stewart’s latest philanthropic initiative: the opening of transitional facilities for single mothers and their kids. Recently, the Atlanta native purchased homes in College Park in an effort to revitalize the residences and make them
