Choosing the right path I remember sitting in class learning how to create a newspaper. I was intrigued by all of the moving pieces—literally and figuratively—and how everyone had a role in putting this paper together. I also remember feeling nervous each time I stepped inside my home economics class because I never really felt confident in the kitchen. As fate would have it, I ended up taking a liking to this thing called journalism and now, you can call me the Queen of Baking as I find pure joy in taking my red velvet bundt cake out of the oven. Sometimes you choose your path and at other times, your path chooses you. What fascinates me about this issue is our Cutting-Edge Careers in Home Improvement feature. What causes uneven concrete and cracks?
Most uneven and cracking concrete is caused by settlement. Settlement is due to one of three things: poorly compacted soil, erosion or decay. Prior to pouring, concrete preparation is extremely important for its longevity. Topsoil, clay and loose fill should be removed and a good base material should be installed and, most importantly, compacted. Traditional astronomical digital timers are the most popular, since they are economical. Your lights will come on at dusk and go off at whatever time you designate. We do not typically recommend Wi-Fi-enabled devices controlled via a smartphone because your lights will not come on if there is an issue with your internet. Proximity is usually an issue with Bluetooth-enabled controllers so we definitely stay away from them. the heart of home improvement Renovating, repaying, and helping those in need Volunteers from the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association and South Haven Builders partnered with nonprofit HomeAid Atlanta in fall 2018 to completely renovate the interior of one of the buildings in The Drake Village, a program of The Drake House nonprofit. Families in need that have successfully graduated from the initial free-housing program by The Drake House move into The Drake Village while learning to become

February 2019, Building 40 in The Drake Village now has more than double the number of rooms available. What Is The Best Floor For A Kitchen?
Kitchen floors take a lot of abuse: heavy traffic, moisture concerns, chairs around islands or tables. These flooring categories perform well in kitchens: Luxury vinyl---available in wood looks (3” to 7” wide planks) and tile and stone visuals. The tiles can sometimes be grouted if desired, and are available in a variety of sizes, including 12” x 24”. The technology being utilized creates extremely realistic patterns and textures. Luxury vinyl is an extremely moisture resistant floor, very durable, stain resistant, and most are rated for commercial use. Some styles have attached backings, which add warmth, cushioning, and sound deadening properties. Laminates---very scratch and indentation resistant, perfect for busy, active households, especially homes with pets. Laminates mimic wood, tile and stone, in popular high-end looks like exotic species, white washed, oil rubbed, even distressed looks like wirebrushing and hand scraping.
There are wood-look tiles that have great realism if you don’t want a traditional tile look. Do consider slip resistance; a textured tile is recommended. Wood---there are some wood floors that are better suited for kitchens. Not indestructible, but certainly more durable. Some features to look for include wire brushing, character grade, distressed, low gloss/matte finishes, and oil rubbed finishes. According to the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) via the Construction Labor Market 20/20 Foresight Report, by 2022, there will be a demand for more than 1.4 million craft professionals across the U.S. In

is a tradesperson in a field that requires a specific skill set to execute manual labor. These profitable career paths, which include woodworking, interior design, landscape architecture and more, are today providing the men and women in these roles a lifetime of financial freedom, community legacy, and personal satisfaction. In fact, a 2015 study found construction professionals to be among the happiest in the workforce. Perhaps it’s thanks to a bustling economy, maybe it’s due to the surge in DIY and home improvement television, or frankly, it could be because people do not want to be stuck behind their computers all day, but regardless the cause, the home improvement industry is without question experiencing a renaissance. worldly wonders Erika H. Ward shares how to incorporate global aesthetics into your home. Erika Hollinshead Ward curates gorgeous interiors. As the owner of Atlanta-based Erika Ward Interiors, she’s fascinated with travel and learning about other cultures. “I like to find out what a culture entails and what that looks like aesthetically,” Erika says. “I want spaces to feel like they have heart, spirit, and history.” Growing up, the talented creative developed an eye for interiors thanks to her grandmother, Onetha. “She wasn’t a trained decorator but she was very creative,” Erika says. “I assisted her with a lot of things in our own home.” Erika’s grandfather, Lawrence, was an architect. “They primed me for what I’m doing now,” she says. After a recent trip to South Africa, Erika’s affinity for worldly goods has been heightened. “Bring special pieces from your travels into your home,” Erika says. But if a summer getaway isn’t in the near future, don’t worry. You can still transform a space with an otherworldly look and feel by accenting it with global-inspired furnishings.

For interior designer Zach Azpeitia, the pressure was on—his task was to install an entertainment room in this north Atlanta home for his VIP movie-industry clients, film and TV producer Will Packer, his wife, Heather, and their four children. “I knew Will would use the space for work and for play,” Zach says. “It’s not only a family entertainment center, it would be used as a screening room and a site for release parties.” His approach was to mimic the look of a commercial movie theater by using dark colors and comfy oversized furniture. “Red adds a punch to the space and I liked how well it worked with Will’s awesome collection of autographed movie posters—all from films he produced.” In order to create a glamorous mood for the space, Zach knew he had to make a big impact with lighting. “I used layers of lighting. We installed low-voltage step lights so guests can navigate the dark room safely. They are literally the first, easiest step in creating a movie-theater atmosphere,” Zach explains. “Next, all the room’s lights are separated into zones and are controlled by rheostats so they can vary in intensity. Then, I added a bar showcasing a rare lighting element—an onyx countertop—it’s a transparent stone, so it glows when backlit. I also highlighted Will’s posters by adding portrait lights above them.” For the final touch, Zach visited One Stop Productions in Atlanta to choose the high-end video and sound system. The result? A home theater worthy of a black-tie Oscars night or slumber party binge-watching.
