Fall is always a busy time for home improvement projects and I believe in that respect, this fall will be no different. In fact, home improvement projects have been going strong since spring. With everyone getting so much time in their homes they are tackling projects they have wanted to get to for years. But, how do you find the professionals to help you get the work done? Of course recommendations from your friends and neighbors are always a good place to start, but keep in mind that you and your neighbors may have different points of view on who is best to work with. A big part of a successful home improvement project relies on communication— make sure you choose someone you connect with and easily understand one another. We always suggest that you get estimates and talk to at least three different companies and ask them for references. Now, how do you go about finding them? We have hundreds of professionals on our website! Just go to

Many of our customers install lighting in their showers to showcase their beautiful new tile or stone. Traditional heavy glass has a slight green tint, which can change the hue of the surface slightly, especially if the tile or marble is white. Drexler provides low-iron, crystal clear David Drexler Starphire glass with perfect clarity and no greenish tint! The glass virtually disappears in full sized vignettes.
A substantially high percentage of such areas invariably involve water or moisture. For example, a small leak under a sink will eventually lead to a rotten cabinet floor and, even worse, damage to the ceiling and walls of the room below. A speck of wood rot will expand rapidly. It’s best to recognize that plumbing connections are fallible and should be checked on Doug Parker, Owner a regular basis. Also, any discoloration of exterior wood surfaces should be addressed as quickly as possible.

Q
Does a larger HVAC system offer better performance?
A
Bigger is not only not better, it may be worse. Your heating and airconditioning must be matched to your living space. Geography, square footage, insulation value, window type and amount, along with ceiling height are all part of the calculations required Bill Mashraky to determine the “right size” of equipment. Cool Air Mechanical Comfort Consultants are trained to make recommendations based upon these and other factors.

Is one season better than another to have my siding installed?
A
The seasons don’t make a difference for siding installation. I personally feel the months that are mild, not too hot or cold, are the best both for the customer and the crew doing the install. Charlie Dallavalle No loss of air condition or heat, and the crew seems to get more accomplished when the weather is good.

Q
How do I know what kind of waterproofing system is best for my home?
A
It really depends on the age of your home and the type of foundation it was originally constructed with. Most likely, a permanent solution will involve either an exterior or interior waterproofing system. An Engineered Solutions project manager has the experience and knowledge to design a system tailored specifically to your Derek Ritchie home and situation. Their Life of Structure Warranties are fully transferable to any future home buyers.

Q
What is the difference between room darkening and blackout treatments?
A
Blackout shades use fabrics that block 100% of all incoming light, while room darkening refers to fabrics that block between 95-99% of light. The best options for total room darkening are shades with Andrea and Sean Zare blackout fabric and light blocking side channels. Hunter Douglas offers their Duette and Roller shades with this LightLock system.

Q
What is underlayment and is it always necessary?
A
Underlayment is a product that is used between the subfloor and the floor. There are different types of underlayment. Some floors and installation methods require an underlayment, but not all do. Your flooring Elisabeth Stubbs professional will be able to determine this.

GARAGE DOORS
Q A
How do I know which garage door opener is right for my home?
There are several options in opener technology. You’ll make your choice based on several items. Openers provide either chain, belt, or screw drive operation. The motor size is also a factor; choose based on the size and weight of your garage door. Remote operation is a growing trend among busy homeowners. Using a wifi-connected opener, John Nale you can raise and lower your door and get alerts when someone enters, using the app on your smartphone.

ROOFING
WINDOW REPLACEMENT
Q
How can I spot a failing roof and what should I do to fix or prevent that from happening?
A
Some aging is obvious—if your roof is more than 15 years old, it is time to get a new one. Sometimes, the roof can age and become discolored due to the sun. Shingle granules Chad Cruce tend to come off over time and can accumulate in the gutters. Algae can even grow if a roof does not have enough sun exposure. Check to see if your roof has any oxidation from the sun, any significant amount of algae, and/or if there is evidence of granules from the shingles coming into the gutters and downspouts.

Q
What are window options that will bring more light into my bathroom, but still maintain my privacy?
A
Light is essential in a bathroom, especially in the morning to get you going. All bathroom windows must have tempered glass for safety reasons. Most manufacturers offer Mark Cantrall privacy glass in various patterns, laminated or obscure, to provide privacy where you need it while letting light in. Or choose a casement or awning window that can be opened on those occasions when you prefer a breeze of fresh air.

GUTTERS
Q
How do I know where my downspouts need to be located?
A
Generally, a downspout should be installed about every 30 feet or so. A gutter design specialist and the homeowner usually can come up with a plan that combines Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk both aesthetics and performance. This may require a different downspout location from its current design and may also include underground piping to keep water away from the foundation.

SELECTING FLOORING PRODUCT WITHOUT CONSIDERING YOUR NEEDS AND LIFESTYLE There is no universal “one size fits all” flooring choice. Remember to factor in components such as traffic, pets, kids, etc. Take the time to determine which product will best meet your lifestyle, budget, desired appearance, and maintenance. Our consultants can introduce you to products you have not considered or did not know existed.
2
NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU ARE BUYING With hundreds of different products to choose from, choosing new flooring can be a daunting task. We help you to get the best quality product for your budget. All flooring is different. The more you know, the easier it will be to make the best choice for your home.
3
CHOOSING BASED ON A SMALL SAMPLE Deciding on the right color and shade of your new floor is very important. You want it to complement your home and décor. It is very difficult to get an accurate idea of what a color will look like based on a 2-inch sample. Whenever possible, use a larger piece of sample flooring to really see how the color will work in your home.

➅ Stools: Mid-century inspired bar stools from West Elm bring a natural element with warm-colored leather, while the copper-finished legs match other accents in the design.
Tips for designing a kitchen • Pair bold statement colors with calm neutrals. The best way to
showcase something special is to give it a 'quiet surrounding'. Hues with grey undertones are an excellent choice, regardless of the color.
• Lighting is the jewelry of a design. It can set the tone and amp up interest instantly, so make it fun and full of personality!
• Keep your counters clutter-free with baskets and trays.
Corral small objects to create interesting vignettes and style decorative shelving with both useful and beautiful objects.
• Good flooring is practicality meets personality. Vinyl has come

a long way, but doesn't offer the same charm as wood. It also doesn't need as much care. Know your lifestyle and your goals, and find where they meet.

Make Your Kitchen The Hub of Entertaining The team recently completed a stunning kitchen remodel in East Cobb with an emphasis on making the kitchen the heart of the home. Designer, Princess Thompson, created this open concept design by removing a load-bearing wall and installing a hidden beam. This change had a big impact, dramatically expanding the kitchen and connecting it to the dining room with a large peninsula.
BEFORE
Thompson also took extra care to keep the character of the home intact and maximize storage. The team installed the same flooring throughout the main floor of the home and created custom solutions like reclaimed wood floating shelves. Fine details including tile backsplash, quartz countertops, and pendant lighting brought the entire design together. With the whole project completed in just 5 weeks, the homeowners now have a kitchen they can enjoy for years to come. Southern Design and Remodeling is an award-winning, full-service remodeling company specializing in full kitchen remodels. Come visit their newly remodeled showroom in the heart of East Cobb.

Low-Maintenance Decrease the upkeep of your yard with proper planning By Shandra Hill Smith “Most people want a landscape they feel like they own and not a landscape that owns them,” says Charles Hodges of Charles Hodges, Ltd. Gardens. “They want a beautiful, enjoyable space without the hours of tedious maintenance.” While turning your yard into a showpiece won’t happen without some effort, low-maintenance results are possible. The key is to plan before planting, including smart features from the beginning.

“LAY THE GROUNDWORK BY INVESTING IN SOIL PREPARATION BEFORE STARTING YOUR GARDEN, THIS WILL PUT YOU STEPS AHEAD.”—JOHN KENNA, PRESIDENT OF WATER, COLOR & STONE INC.
Laying the groundwork If low or little maintenance is your goal, start with soil testing to check the pH level of where you hope to plant. “Investing in soil preparation is well worth it, and you’ll start out three steps ahead if you’ll do that,” says John Kenna, president of Water, Color & Stone Inc. “Soil testing is really one of the best values. That way, you have absolute concrete knowledge about the pH of the soil, what the nutrient levels are. If your pH is not correct, more than 50 percent of the nutrients that are in that soil cannot be available to the plant because the plant can’t take it up if the soil pH is not right.”
Water wise “Designing a plan with plants, trees and lawns that require less water is key to low maintenance,” says Rick Kaldrovics, president of Outside Landscape Group, LLC, in Alpharetta, adding that one particular technique—that of grouping plantings by water needs—could help you save on water bills. “We will place higher water-use plants in one section of the garden and lower water-use plants in another. Therefore, you can minimize the time-consuming tasks of running all over the yard to try to cover everything. You can concentrate your efforts of watering to specific sections of the landscape.” Before selecting grass or plantings, Hodges suggests that you “consider drainage and potential erosion problems. Drainage problems can be a potential nightmare and can lead to a lot of expense for both your home and landscape,” he says. “Think about how and where your water is to leave your property. It is sometimes hard to believe how enormous the rainstorms can get in Georgia. Plan for the worst, and you will never have any problems.”

Another consideration: Properly installed irrigation systems, which Hodges says “can significantly reduce time and costs of maintenance. Rather than hand-watering your landscape with a cumbersome, inefficient hose, consider installing drip irrigation or other forms of irrigation that can save time, effort, money and natural resources. Recent advances in irrigation technology have significantly reduced the price and increased the availability of systems that work well for small landscapes.”
Plant selection Proper plant selection and placement can help decrease maintenance. One thing homeowners should be particularly aware of is how quickly certain plants can grow. “Homeowners should avoid rapid growing plants such as Privets, Loropetalum, and Elaeagnus. These plants can take over a space within a matter of a few seasons if not properly maintained,” explains Shaun Bowker of Synergy Landscape Group. Despite being available at many nurseries, these plants are often listed as invasive species as well and can wreak havoc on the local environment. Other common examples include English ivy, periwinkle, Bradford pear and nandina. When searching for plants that will do well in your yard, native plants are always a solid choice since they are already made to survive Georgia’s climate (including those long, hot summers). Common native plants include coreopsis, oak leaf hydrangea, azalea, rhododendron and phlox. Light level and plant size also should be considered when seeking to create a low-maintenance landscape. “Probably the first thing is understanding the light requirements of the area you’re beginning to landscape,”

PLANTING A ROSE GARDEN? SELECT LOW-MAINTENANCE ROSES. SOME VARIETIES ARE BLACK SPOT RESISTANT, DROUGHT-TOLERANT AND EVEN SELF-CLEANING – THAT MEANS NO DEADHEADING.
says Todd Guilmette, of Unique Environmental Concepts. Guilmette says a typical new installation should last between five and seven years—with seasonal maintenance—before you’ll need to look at a possible renovation or enhancements. “The right plant in the right location is important to creating a low-maintenance landscape,” says Guilmette. “Your plant palette needs to relate to the area in which you are landscaping.” As for design, the golden rule of landscaping is to plant in odd numbers. The effect is more appealing to the human eye and helps present a more natural look. Ready to start digging? Begin at the front of your home and work out toward the street to create some curb appeal. “We have found that once you add color and life to that area, it impacts the homeowners overall attitude daily. It’s like a breath of fresh air,” say Bowker. Choosing perennials over annuals is another key component to a low-maintenance design, since they come back year after year. But remember to still consider the plant’s basic needs including sun, water and wildlife. Though decks, porches, hardscapes and other outdoor structures may require more of a financial investment, Hodges says they can help offset landscape maintenance as well as provide additional living space. “The lowest maintenance landscapes consist of living areas of stone or pavers that can act as an extension of the home. These multipurpose areas with fireplaces, fire pits, cooking areas, simple water features and seasonal color in planters can be enjoyed as an outdoor extension of the home and are very simple to maintain.”

Prevent problems A poorly maintained landscape actually can create more work, so minimizing problem areas can help decrease maintenance. “If lawn sections have withered away or thinned out, fill them in,” says Kaldrovics. “Bare areas in the lawn invite weeds and erosion, both of which require time to clean up or tend to. If you can fill it in with sod or seed with success, start there. If shade has prevented the lawn from growing, perhaps make the area into a planting bed and add some plants or groundcover. “Bare planting beds benefit from filling in as well. If your planting beds are down to dirt, top dress with a fresh layer of mulch or pine straw to again minimize weeds or erosion. Even better, fill in with a grouping of plants or groundcover and, as it fills in, there will not be any need to mulch again, and therefore you have installed a permanent solution to no mulching, no weeds and no erosion.” When using mulch, which can help regulate moisture, Kenna suggests going with pine or hardwood. Kenna also adds that compost may be available in your area at little or no charge and to contact your county extension service for more local landscaping tips and advice. By taking a few steps to plan your landscape, you will be able to enjoy an outdoor space that looks great and is easy to maintain, leaving you proud and others taking another look.

kitchen and bath industry. I was at KBIS in Chicago with my college design group when I met my first employer.
What advice would you give to those hoping to start a career in the home industry? Network like crazy. Like a lot of industries, the home industry is small and everyone knows everyone, so having the right contacts can really help you out. Growth comes from experience, so be patient with yourself and remember with every mistake you are refining your skill set. Communication is key!
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you? I approach kitchen and bath design in a way that makes what some would consider a stressful undertaking a fun process. I understand the technical side of design, which allows me to communicate clearly and think outside the box to create one-of-a-kind spaces for my clients.
Describe a project that challenged you. What did you take away from this project? I designed Bell Cabinetry & Designs ADAC West Showroom back in 2016/2017 and it was definitely challenging. From laying out the space to designing and selecting the finishes for each vignette, it was a huge undertaking, but one that I am so proud of! www.the-designery.com www.instagram.com/_thedesignery www.facebook.com/thedesigneryatl

Clara Carrasco-Banik | Age 29 Ameris Bank Mortgage Marketing Coordinator
Financing a home is just as important as the design and that’s where Clara Carrasco-Banik shines. As one of the founding team members of Ameris Bank’s builder services division, this Barcelona native has been instrumental in the journeys of dozens of homeowners starting their dream homes.
Why do you have a passion for the home industry? I have a passion for the home industry, because it really is all around us and a part of our everyday lives. For those of us who work in the home industry, we can make a difference for the better from areas such as financing, accessible housing, sustainable resource use and much more.
What has been the most difficult part of your career so far? I think the biggest obstacle (and also the

biggest blessing) in being in the mortgage industry is that you will always be forced to learn something new. It is a fast-paced industry and is ever-changing, so you always have to be on your toes.
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you? I am a true believer that through consistency, you can achieve anything. When I apply that to any aspects of my job, I find that results do happen.
What are your top three places to go in Atlanta? A bike ride through the BeltLine, going to eat at Barcelona Wine Bar (where they serve pretty authentic Spanish food) and paddle boarding or kayaking at Lake Lanier or Allatoona.
Describe a project that challenged you. What did you take away from this project? Being part of the group that started the builder services division at Ameris Bank. Jumping from set design to interior design, Alexandra Mia of Alexandra Mia Design has an impressive career both on and off screen. She was the production designer for season 5 of Tiny Homes on HGTV and has been running her own design firm for nine years.
How did you get your start in the home industry? My junior year of college I interned at a residential design firm, my senior year I got my start in TV from an internship at Turner Broadcasting in the scenic department, which led to my first job as a set decorator for Movie and a Makeover, and Dinner and a Movie.
What did you want to do when you were a little kid growing up? I thought I would become a lawyer... haha, I still love to argue.
my background that combines both interior design and production design has made me a unique designer in the ways I am able to quickly grasp the goals of the client and think through the project from a lens of story (how this will improve their lives) and aesthetics. Because I have done a lot of projects that involved Tiny Homes and unique special projects, I always think of unique solutions to challenges that may not seem to have an obvious solution.
Do you have any unique hobbies or passion projects outside of work? My husband and I have been planning a shipping container home build for the last five years and it is finally coming to fruition with a groundbreaking, hopefully, early next year.
What has been the most difficult part of your career so far? Tiny House Nation Season 5. I designed 15 Tiny Homes in six months and, in addition to the design and decor in the homes, I had to come up with numerous creative story solutions per house. www.alexandramia.com www.instagram.com/amdesignatl

Alex Martin is a planner and a go-getter, traits that serve him well in the real estate game where he is both an agent and an investor. After learning from some talented mentors, Alex decided to forge his own path when he created his own company, A. Martin Realty Group, LLC, with brokerage, Village Realty.
How did you get your start in the home industry? I became interested in real estate because Atlanta is a gold mine, and I just saw so much opportunity across the board which led me to my research in investing. My mentor Justin Giles, broker at Real Estate Gurus Realty, was a big inspiration of mine, and helped me transition my business into the investing and construction side of the industry. That is when I realized my true passion in real estate.
What advice would you give to those hoping to start a career in the home industry? Do your research before, choose your niche and build your brand around it. Photography by Krys Alex Photography. Hair and makeup by The Green Room Agency.

Alex Martin | Age 30 Village Realty | Real Estate Agent
Why do you have a passion for the home industry? I’ve always aspired to be a homeowner. My experience/expertise progressed from agency, to investing, to project management for construction. Once I became more knowledgeable in the industry, it ignited my passion on a more creative level. I love creating my own product; home renovations and construction.
Describe the project you are most proud of. What do you like about it? I am most proud of my second project in East Point. This was the first project I managed. We restructured the layout in the living room, dining room & kitchen. We converted a porch to a sunroom and created an open floor plan with nice cosmetic finishes. The property itself was one reason why I was proud, but the deal yielded a stronger ROI than anticipated. We sold this property for $30K above the appraisal.
How would your friends and coworkers describe you? My close family and friends would describe me as someone who is willing to make sacrifices. I take big chances and see my plans through to the end. They also know that I am capable of making the most out of a small window of opportunity. www.instagram.com/amartinrealty.atl

Ross Vogel | Age 32 TSW | Project Manager/Architect Architect Ross Vogel has had a passion for designing homes since childhood, where he filled page after page with sketches of houses. Since completing his architecture degree at UNC Charlotte, Ross has won multiple OBIE awards for his designs and even started his own brand, Rustic Decor Guy.
Why do you have a passion for the home industry? At an early age, my brother and I would collect free real estate magazines from the grocery store and sketch out our favorite homes on copy paper. We would then host Lego house competitions from our bedrooms to see who could build the best house from the bins and bins of our Lego Library. My final Lego house still stands to this day in my parents’ home.
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you?
is dependent on the homeowner. The space that will be occupied most should be the true basis for any residential design project.
Do you have any unique hobbies or passion projects outside of work? I created a home decor and lifestyle blog, Rustic Decor Guy, which explores rustic-themed decorating mixed with cooking and lifestyle ideas under the theme “unlimited ideas on a limited budget.” Just like architecture, I love seeing my ideas come to life. My hope is for all my followers to find inspiration and encouragement in my posts. I am also in the process of writing a cookbook, “Food from the Farm Table.”
Anything else you would like to share with us? With a wedding a year and a half away, I am using my graphic skills to design the “Save the Date” cards and invitations. I am also designing the layout of the reception and ceremony in CAD. www.tsw-design.com www.rusticdecorguy.com

Even though our final drawings are two-dimensional, I try to visualize the 3D aspect of each project and how each space will function in terms of comfort, size, volume, etc. This ultimately helps to design a space that not only meets the client’s short-term needs, but their long-term needs as well.
Luisa Corrales | Age 30 François & Co.
Account Manager Southeast & Gulf Coast Growing up in a creative home, influenced by her parents’ graphic design business, it was natural that Luisa Corrales would venture into a creative industry of her own. After receiving a BA in Interior Design at The Art Institute of Atlanta, Luisa now works to incorporate the beautiful pieces of François & Co. into the designs of her clients.
How did you get your start in the home industry? My parents are my biggest source of inspiration. Growing up surrounded by their graphic design company taught me so much about dedication, hard work, teamwork and creativity. The industry itself is an inspiration, it is always evolving and keeps me on my toes!

Why do you have a passion for the home industry? I love my clients and knowing that they trust me to create beautiful products for their homes means the world to me. I believe at François & Co. we have the most beautiful line of products, from our signature Scagliola mantels to our French oak floors.
What awards or professional honors you’ve received? ASID Distinguished Service as Membership Director of the Georgia Chapter Board of Directors 2015-2016
How do you spark your creativity when you feel stuck? I have such a great work family. We usually do lunch on Fridays to catch up and that is when we brainstorm together and find ways to be creative.
Do you have any unique hobbies or passion projects outside of work? My boyfriend and I recently purchased our first home, so that will have to be the biggest project outside of work. I love working on our home and making it just right for us. I can’t wait to add a few François & Co. pieces to our home! www.francoisandco.com www.instagram.com/luisa_francois_and_co

Brooke Ivey | Age 32 Ben Hill Renovations Inc President/Remodeler
Remodeling runs in the family for Brooke Ivey, President of Ben Hill Renovations—a company started by her grandfather. She went into the family business in the 8th grade to save for her first car and was named President this year.
Did or do you have any mentors? David Welch, my father, has been a great mentor. He has worked hard and trained me into the professional that I am today. I’ve gone from working part-time in college as an AP clerk and helping him with marketing, to being named President last year.
Why do you have a passion for the home industry? I enjoy building lasting relationships with our customers, designing and following through to see the finalized job, and continuing my grandfather’s legacy of being a part of the home industry.
What awards or professional honors you’ve received? Small Business of Excellence 2019, Douglas County Beautification Award 2020
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you? We work hard to give our customer’s a stress-free experience during their construction project. Our company’s motto is, “Always create raving fans!” We are always trying to stay up-to-date with the latest technology to help our customers in the design phase of their project! Also, I firmly believe that great communication will take you a long way.
What has been the most difficult part of your career so far? Being a younger woman in the male-dominated construction industry.
Describe the project you are most proud of. What do you like about it? Our office renovation is by far the project I am most proud of. It is a great show piece to display an outstanding before and after. It is also where we have a showroom for our customers to be able to come in and meet with our design team and pick out what type of roof, siding, windows, decking, etc. www.bhreno.com

Taylor Gann | Age 30 CR Home
Custom Home Coordinator Having a lifelong exposure to the home industry from her parents’ fabrication shop, Taylor Gann uses her experience to help clients build their dream project as a Custom Home Coordinator with CR Home.
How did you get your start in the home industry? My family has been involved in the industry for many years. That, combined with my love for all things home design, made the decision very easy for me. My parents are easily my largest source of inspiration. Not only did they give me my first industry job, but they have pushed me to realize that the sky’s the limit and to never stop reaching.
Why do you have a passion for the home industry?
Photography by Krys Alex Photography. Hair and makeup by The Green Room Agency.
I guess it boils down to the fact that I am a homebody. I like my home to be comfortable, liveable and to make me feel good at the end of the day. I feel lucky to be able to help my clients achieve the same.
How do you spark your creativity when you feel stuck? This may sound crazy, but lists help my creative process. When I am feeling stuck or overwhelmed, I like to break things down item by item or task by task. Concentrating on one thing at a time allows me to give that thing the time it deserves and I can begin to see the big picture more clearly. Dogs and music certainly don’t hurt, either.
What do you think is the most important part of a home? In my opinion, the most important part of a home is the kitchen. In my experience, the kitchen tends to be most consistent gathering zone for families.
What has been the most difficult part of your career so far? The most difficult part of my career path so far would be making the decision to leave my family’s business. I learned so much from them and am lucky that they are my biggest cheerleaders in life. www.constructionresourcesusa.com

Sam Johnson | Age 28 Better Tomorrow Solar Marketing Director
Building a better tomorrow is something Sam Johnson works toward everyday as the Marketing Director for Better Tomorrow Solar. Inspired to join the sustainability industry after an internship with the Southface Institute, Sam is working toward making solar affordable and stylish.
How did you get your start in the home industry? My first experience in the home industry was at Southface Institute, a nonprofit which broadly focuses on increasing the sustainability of the built environment. I’m inspired by the breakthroughs in design and technology on the sustainability and environmental protection front, specifically as they pertain to how we design the cities we live in.
different kinds of associations that exist under the home industry umbrella. Find whatever niche within the home industry you most enjoy and get involved! Getting involved/volunteering with these organizations is the best way to build bridges and make friends with other people who are passionate about the same things as you, and will help you determine which areas of the industry you would enjoy working in the most.
What do you think is the most important part of a home? The overall design philosophy of the builders; their use of space and light—I think a home should bring the outside in as much as possible. People are part of nature and a well-designed built environment can remind its people of this fact every day.
Describe a project that challenged you. What did you take away from this project? There are always growing pains when learning a new industry. For me, I’m still working to learn the ins and outs of solar regulations and how each municipality in Georgia handles them differently. www.bettertomorrowsolar.com www.facebook.com/bettertomorrowsolar www.instagram.com/bettertomorrowsolar_

Business owner, home renovator, father—these are just a few ways to describe Garrett Erath, owner of Exodus 36 Creations, LLC, a remodeling company based in Lawrenceville. Taking on your own business in a competitive industry is no small feat, but Garrett credits much of his success to his strong faith.
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you? I believe my collaborative approach sets me apart: I don’t make decisions in a vacuum and I don’t think my way is always the only way. I like to be a listener and hear from others’ experiences.
What has been the most difficult part of your career so far? Starting this business was the first major obstacle: I was only 23 years old, my wife and I had just purchased our first home, I left my full time job and the next day we found out we were pregnant. It was a lot at once!
What do you believe is your defining characteristic? Photography by Krys Alex Photography. Hair and makeup by The Green Room Agency.

Garrett Erath | Age 29 Exodus 36 Creations, LLC | President
My faith and support. Everything I build my life on is linked back to my Christian faith and that’s what defines me. When it comes to support, with how collaborative I am, I know that I am a product of those I spend most of my time with and respect.
Why do you have a passion for the home industry? I believe that every person is given talents and passions from God to use for His glory. I firmly believe He gave me a passion for making old things new, helping families and for working with people.
Describe a project that challenged you. What did you take away from this project? We did a very modern kitchen in Johns Creek that had a lot of firsts for us. We had to recess a beam in the ceiling that was bearing a lot of the roof load and the customer was not going to have a column in the kitchen. We also did European-style frameless cabinets, a massive island with waterfall edges, and installed nine appliances. The finished product turned out awesome, but it wasn’t easy getting there! www.e36creations.com www.facebook.com/e36creations

Walker Zanger | Sales & Design Representative Why do you love working at Walker Zanger? Being a family owned company, they definitely cemented the importance of family/work balance and were willing to let me take as much time as I needed to get back in the groove of things in the showroom after my pregnancy.
How did you get your start in the home industry? I graduated Georgia State University with a BA in Art History and minored in Marketing. My first “big girl” job was a showroom assistant at a fabric company in ADAC.
What advice would you give to those hoping to start a career in the home industry? Patience is key when working with homeowners who are taking on a project as important as their own home. With social media, people are bombarded with inspiration photos of what they want their dream home to be. It’s our job to take their ideas and make them a reality. www.walkerzanger.com www.instagram.com/genie_pyt

CR Home | Interior Designer Why do you love working at CR Home? Working for such a giant in the industry you really get to see what it’s like combining all of our divisions and watching them all come together to create such incredible spaces. Our clients are always so relieved when they find out that we can handle such a broad spectrum of work. Finally, I just really enjoy working with so many talented and skilled individuals throughout our company. If you weren’t in the home industry what would you want to do? I already did it! I had the opportunity in my younger years to be a part of the modeling industry and that really shaped me for the world I design in today!
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you? I always like to present the good and the bad up front in all of my work. That in itself has been a great way to make sure every party involved is on the same page. www.instagram.com/crhomedesign

Stock & Trade Design Co. | Interior Designer Did you have any mentors? One of my first mentors was my high school drafting instructor, W.C. Black. Mr. Black was an architect in the small town I grew up in and always pushed the boundaries of design.
What advice would you give to those hoping to start a career in the home industry? Refining a natural talent isn’t always easy, so don’t lose yourself in the process. Do what you love and stick with it, because when everything comes together it is all worth it. Challenges are part of the solution. Welcome challenges—they create unique dynamics and force you to think outside of the box. Stay inspired and have fun!
What do you think is the most important part of a home? The built environment will always be at the forefront of design, but the people who occupy any space are the most important.

After deciding what trade I wanted to master, I went to Decker School of Construction for electrical and was placed for employment before I graduated.
How did you get your start in the home industry? When we were preparing to start Nuenergy Atlanta Electrical, we got our jump-start by joining the Atlanta Apartment Association (AAA), which was introduced to me by a property manager.

Garth Property Group | Co-Owner/Broker If you weren’t in the home industry what would you want to do? I used to be a police officer and a security specialist in Afghanistan; my degree is in criminal justice. My plan was to attend law school, but God had other plans.
Why do you have a passion for the home industry? I get a natural high on seeing a house transform into a home.
Describe a project that challenged you. What did you take away from this project? We flip houses, so there's always something challenging in every project. But when you have to take on the task that one of your contractors is usually responsible for, you realize how much they are appreciated. For me it was with drywall. My husband and I did it on our own one time and I was holding it up with my head trying to help him, ha! www.garthpropertygroup.com

Outdoor Makeover & Living Spaces Co-founder & CEO
How did you get your start in the home industry? The root source of my career inspiration comes from my father, Abdy Derakhshan, who owned a successful home building company. I always enjoyed being outdoors and once he saw how well we were managing small projects in high school, he helped me get to the next level by connecting me with Oscar, who owned a large landscaping company. As I helped Oscar run his company, he helped me develop my own business as a premium outdoor living space service.
How do you approach your craft in a way that is different than those who came before you? Our approach to outdoor design is to understand the client’s overall goals that led them to invite us to their home to design their dream spaces. We take care into understanding their end results and expectations of their new outdoor spaces. We take pride in creating value in a number of unique ways. www.outdoormakeover.net www.facebook.com/outdoormakeoveratlanta

Victory! The Top 5 Yard Trends By Kim Ashby MacColeman Metro Atlanta is full of innovators.Trailblazers who, when handed months of isolation and nervous energy, took tape measures, trimmers, and garden hoses in hand to renovate their great outdoors. “Mutiny on the backyard!” we cried. Then we tilled and planted until the yard was tamed and tranquil. But for many, the yard battles continue. Keep fighting Braveheart! For extra motivation here are five outdoor design trends to inspire victory.
If you are into darker greens and year-round color, then Fescue is for you. Rebel® Supreme Fescue is a coldseason grass that thrives in shady conditions. Fescue continues to grow in popularity because it maintains its rich color all year long while warm-season lawns go dormant in the winter. Fescue is a dense grass with a mowing height of 3-4” in the summer (and 2-3” in winter), which means less work for homeowners. Fertilization should not start until October. 2. Smart Sprinkler Controllers Water is key to maintaining a healthy lawn and garden, especially with Georgia’s relentless heat and sporadic dry spells. Sprinkler systems have been around for decades and make irrigation easy with pre-set timers. However, smart sprinkler controllers are the next gen of irrigation. Using wifi or Bluetooth technology, the controllers provide real-time monitoring of weather information and soil conditions. Plus, if users add details like soil type, sun/shade amounts and slope the controllers can water even more efficiently. All this leads to water savings, and of course savings on your utility bill.
REBEL® SUPREME FESCUE PRODUCES RICH, GREEN COLOR ALL YEAR LONG.
3. Top Secret Hideaways Once your backyard is thick and lush, consider another outdoor trend – a hideaway within your hideaway. More homeowners are creating secluded seating areas off the main deck or porch. Often its just a bench or a few chairs tucked into an alcove of trees and flowers. This is where you can plot your next outdoor battle… or quietly sip sweet tea while maintaining a healthy distance from the rebel rousers! 4. The Battle Flag is Blue Finishing touches like planters, pillows, sculptures, and water features add interesting pops of color. According to the National Association of Landscape Professionals, blue is the on-trend color, whether it’s a deep, calming navy blue, or a brighter sea-inspired indigo. 5. Open the Door to Victory Your luxurious, green welcome mat – punctuated with perfect plants and flowers– leads to your ultimate victory – your home. Our fifth outdoor trend is doors, whether a front door or a garage door, both make statements, fulfilling your vision. Simple touches like a fresh coat of paint or a change in hardware can make a lasting impression on your home. Outdoor perfection starts with a luxury lawn. Trust the Certified Turf Professionals at NG Turf to help you lay a triumphant foundation. Visit us online at ngturf.com or call 770-431-1344.

1. Battleground Renovations A lush green lawn brings a sense of peace and comfort to any home, while weeds, bare patches and sun-starved sections of yard can result in frustration. Laying farm-fresh sod instantly creates serenity and curb appeal. TifTuf™ Bermuda is a natural choice because of its endurance and beauty. More than 20 years of study revealed that it needs 38% less water compared to other Bermuda varieties, plus TifTuf is extremely traffic tolerant. The fine leaf blade and bright green color complete this front yard welcome mat. Make sure to keep feeding your Bermuda every four to six weeks until mid-September when the temperatures start to fall.

3-2-1 BBQ Baby Back Ribs By Danielle “Diva Q” Bennett PREP TIME: 15 minutes COOK TIME: 6 hours SERVES: 6-8 people
Photos courtesy of Traeger Grills.
INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • •
2 racks baby back pork ribs cup yellow mustard ½ cup apple juice, divided 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce ½ cup dark brown sugar 1/ 3 cup honey, warmed 1 cup Traeger ‘Que BBQ Sauce Traeger Pork & Poultry Rub 1/ 3
INSTRUCTIONS: Set the Traeger grill to 180° F and preheat with the lid closed for 15 minutes. While the grill preheats, remove the thin, silverskin membrane
from the bone-side of the ribs by working the tip of a butter knife or a screwdriver underneath the membrane over a middle bone. Use paper towels to get a firm grip, then tear the membrane off. Next, in a small bowl, combine the mustard, 1/4 cup of apple juice (reserve the rest) and the Worcestershire sauce. Spread the mixture thinly on both sides of the ribs and season with Traeger Pork & Poultry Rub. Then move the ribs to the grill and smoke, meat-side up, for 3 hours. Once done, transfer ribs to a rimmed baking sheet and increase the grill temperature to 225°F. Tear off four long sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Lay one down and top with a rack of ribs. Pull up the sides
of the foil to keep the liquid enclosed. Sprinkle half the brown sugar on the rack, then top with half the honey and half the remaining apple juice. Use a bit more apple juice if you want more tender ribs. Lay another piece of foil on top and tightly crimp the edges so there is no leakage. Repeat with the remaining rack of ribs. Return the foiled ribs to the grill and cook for an additional 2 hours. When done, carefully open foil and brush ribs on both sides with Traeger ‘Que Sauce. Remove ribs from the foil and place directly on the grill grate. Discard the foil. Continue to grill ribs until the sauce tightens, 30 to 60 minutes. Let ribs rest a few minutes before serving. Blue Cheese Burgers with Red Wine Onions By Jamie Purviance PREP TIME: 15 minutes COOK TIME: 10 minutes SERVES: 4 INGREDIENTS: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 medium red onion, cut into thin half-moons • ½ cup dry red wine • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1½ pound ground chuck (80% lean) • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika • 4 ounces blue cheese, preferably Blue Castello®, cut into 4 slices • 4 soft hamburger buns, split • 1 cup mixed baby greens
WEBER SMOKEFIRE.

INSTRUCTIONS: In a large skillet over medium-high heat on the stove, warm the oil. Add the onion and cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until well softened. Add the wine, thyme, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat, and simmer until the liquid reduces to a glaze and the onions are very tender, about 10 minutes, stirring often. Remove from the heat and cover to keep warm. Prepare the grill for direct cooking over medium-high heat (400° to 500°F). In a medium bowl mix the ground chuck, paprika, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper. Gently form 4 patties of equal size, about
¾ inch thick. With your thumb or the back of a spoon, make a shallow indentation about 1 inch wide in the center of each patty to prevent them from doming as they cook. Refrigerate the patties until ready to grill. Grill the patties over medium-high heat, with the lid closed, until cooked to well done (160°F), 9 to 11 minutes, turning once. During the last 30 seconds to 1 minute of grilling time, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt. Toast the buns, cut side down, over medium-high heat. Build each burger on a bun with a patty, caramelized onions and baby greens. Serve right away. Details: www.weber.com

The Heart of Home Improvement By Martel Sharpe
Lifecycle Building Center A nonprofit that prevents the waste of building materials, the Lifecycle Building Center (LBC) is a large reuse store in southwest Atlanta. The idea is to provide access to affordable, used building materials and keep them out of landfills, but LBC's true purpose is to provide free materials to nonprofits, schools, churches and community centers for use in their own construction projects, significantly reducing the cost.
The 70,000-square-foot facility on Murphy Avenue in southwest Atlanta, two miles north of Fort McPherson, is filled with reclaimed materials from old buildings, residential and commercial, as well as movie sets. Over 6.5 million pounds of materials have passed through these buildings that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. Since it's inception, LBC has donated building materials to over 200 nonprofit organizations in the Atlanta-area. In 2019, LBC, alongside several other eco-concious organizations, partnered with Georgia Tech to help construct the new Kandeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design. LBC contributed 25,000 linear feet of salvaged 2x4 lumber that was recovered from TV/film sets and used in the construction of the flooring. In total, over 20 types of salvaged materials were used in the construction. LBC accepts the material donations of lumber, wire, cabinetry and other construction goods in usable, nonhazardous condition. The Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta Just last year, the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta provided over 5,000 people in need with gently used furniture donations and diverted over 30,000 mattresses from ending up in a landfill. The southwest Atlanta-based organization exists to distribute free and donated furniture to families transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing domestic violence and overcoming difficult situations. While the Furniture Bank doesn’t accept drop-ins, potential recipients can be referred by a client-agency of the organization or a caseworker. To schedule a donation for pick-up, please visit their website. Details: 908 Murphy Ave. SW., Atlanta. www.furniturebankatlanta.org

Formed in 2011, LBC was founded by a group of volunteers dedicated to tackling Atlanta’s overwhelming solid waste problem by creating an avenue for reuse. The founders were Adam Deck and Shannon Goodman, LBC’s current Executive Director.
