One of my favorite things to do is to grab my pruning shears and head outside for some “therapy." This is when I get my big ideas for all of the projects I plan to tackle. If there is evidence of wood rot, do I repair or replace the material?

As with many home improvement projects, cost and permanency are common factors to be considered. While replacement with synthetic-based materials provides Doug Parker a more permanent prevention of future wood rot, the cost is considerably higher than repairing existing natural wood-based materials. Repairing during the early indications of wood rot usually proves to be the most cost-effective and efficient approach.

An issue in a singular location can be a symptom of a more systemic problem. Over time, the foundation drain that was installed when your house was constructed can clog with silt and allow water to find its way into your basement. The Heart of Home Improvement an interactive kitchen for those in need By Lisa R. Schoolcraft The Atlanta Community Food Bank’s new location off Camp Creek Parkway will soon have an added tool to fight food insecurity: an interactive kitchen. The idea for a purposeful partnership began to take shape over a year ago when Matthew D. Rao, owner and principal of RAO Design Studio, Inc., who is also on the advisory board for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, suggested to the National Kitchen & Bath Association Georgia Chapter that the group collaborate with the food bank. Rao, along with Joy Goetz, nutrition and wellness program manager, and Kelsey Petty of Randall-Paulson Architects, has been heading up the design of the cooking space. “It’s a collaboration with the food bank, but I have the background to help it become a learning kitchen,” Rao says.

Until now, the food bank’s kitchen was a place for demonstrations. This will be where client participation happens, he says. The food bank also plans to film events in the kitchen.

“The food bank has a 29-county service area in north Georgia,” says Rao. “That’s a lot of people who are clients that don’t live nearby and aren’t able to come to a class in the learning kitchen. These classes will be broadcast to people who can’t be there.” Vendors such as SieMatic, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove, as well as Caesarstone have enhanced the kitchen with the donation of appliances, cabinetry, countertops, and funds to further its development says Rao, who donated his design services. “The wonderful thing about the learning kitchen is that it will teach groups of people what nutrition is,” he says. “A lot of people who become clients of the food bank didn’t learn about it from their elders. Cooking-Up Camaraderie The My Home Improvement Atlanta staff dons aprons to make a Spanish-inspired meal at The Cook’s Warehouse By Nicole Letts

hat happens when colleagues come together on a Friday afternoon for wine and a cooking class? A whole lot of culinary fun. Our Atlanta Best Media/My Home Improvement Atlanta team met at The Cook’s Warehouse Midtown for a hands-on Spanish cooking demonstration and class led by public class coordinator and chef Nealey Thompson. Together with her attentive, friendly staff, chef Nealey guided three groups of aspiring Atlanta Best Media/ My Home Improvement Atlanta sous chefs through a delectable menu of simple-yet-flavorful fare, all while encouraging snacking between steps.

The Cook’s Warehouse, which is celebrating its 25th year of business, regularly offers (L TO R): GAIL SAWYER, AMY SMITH, DAWN DESANTIS private events, such as our cooking class, for corporate team building. The interactive lesson began with a selection of beverages ranging from water to wine and a charcuterie snack complete with quince spread and various accoutrements. After breaking into three groups of four, tying on aprons and washing hands, we got to work preparing the carte du jour: garlicky shrimp, chicken and chorizo or vegetarian paella (dietary choices depending) and churros con chocolate. While we sliced, simmered and seared, chef Nealey’s team zipped around the demonstration space passing out extra utensils, clearing used dishes and even filling up empty glasses. They were truly like kitchen fairies. Throughout each step, chef Nealey offered helpful kitchen tips and tricks such as creating a trash bowl for discarded scraps of garlic and parsley, which later gets turned into stock, sampling flavors along the way with tasting spoons and using salt

deliberately but sparingly. “When used properly, salt should bring out the natural flavors of vegetables and proteins, not make foods more salty,” she says. However, perhaps the tip that got the most oohs and aahs from the crowd was her shrimpbuying advice, “Always buy frozen, not fresh, because all shrimp is put on ice as soon as it hits the dock. Buying it frozen ensures it’s not thawed, frozen and rethawed several times before making its way to your dinner table.” Her favorite place to purchase fish? Cost-effective Costco! As the team prepared our meal, which would ultimately become a family-style dinner that afternoon, laughter and learning ensued. Some team members even developed their own Julia Child impressions which, of course, had everyone in stitches. Overall, the afternoon was a sizzling success, and we each left with recipes in hand, ready to recreate the three-course Spanishinspired meal for our own friends and families. www.cookswarehouse.com

Garlicky Shrimp (Gambas Al Ajillo) Servings: 4 • • • • • • •

1 ½ pounds peeled and deveined large shrimp 1 teaspoon kosher salt ¼ cup thinly sliced garlic 1 ¼ cups extra-virgin olive oil Red pepper flakes, to taste ½ cup minced Italian parsley 2 tablespoons dry Spanish sherry or white wine • Squeeze of fresh lemon juice • Salt and pepper, to taste • Crusty bread, for dunking

Directions

• Meanwhile, in a large cast-iron or stainlesssteel skillet, combine the garlic and olive oil and cook over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until the garlic is very fragrant and just starts to brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Add large pinch of red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, until fragrant, 15 to 30 seconds. • Add the shrimp to the skillet and cook over moderately low heat, stirring and turning the shrimp occasionally, until barely pink, about 3 minutes. Stir in the parsley, sherry, lemon zest and a generous pinch of salt. Remove from the heat and let stand until the shrimp have finished cooking. Serve in the skillet along with crusty bread for soaking up the sauce.

Durability is the first thing that comes to mind when choosing flooring for the outdoors, but maintenance is just as important. Elisabeth Stubbs, co-owner of Enhance Floors & More, offers the following advice:

• Synthetic fibers like polyester and acrylic provide better durability against the elements.

• Porcelain tile is the recommended choice for outdoor areas because it is resistant to freezing.

• Outdoor fabrics are measured in “light hours,” which is the amount of time they can receive direct sun before starting to fade. A good number to look for is between 1,200 and 1,500 hours.

• Make sure to go with a tile that has texture and slip resistance. Plus, bigger tiles (18x18) are the way to go—it means less grout!

• To prolong the color of outdoor fabrics, be sure to bring them inside when not in use, or use a cover to prevent direct sunlight exposure.

• Acrylic or epoxy grouts are best for outdoor tile, since they do not need to be sealed like cement-based grouts. • For something more economical, try outdoor carpet. No, it doesn’t all look like Astroturf.

Avoid the Top 5 Spring Lawn Mistakes Signs of spring are everywhere—from budding tulips and daffodils to the greening up of Georgia’s dormant grass. In the coming weeks, the urge to spring clean in the yard will be overwhelming, but there are five things to consider before gassing up the mower. Keeping these spring tips in mind will save a lot of frustration and work as your yard fully awakens. 1. Soil Test. A soil test is like a routine physical for your lawn (without the painful co-pay!). This will tell you about the nutrients in your grass and whether you need to adjust the pH level. If the soil is too acidic, or not enough, it can impact the health of your lawn. A soil test only takes a few minutes and a couple of dollars. To get a soil sample, use a clean shovel and dig down about four to six inches to get below the vegetation. Take a slice from the side of the hole and put the sample in a bag. Continue to gather samples from several spots in your yard. Then send them to your county extension office. You should have results in 7-10 days. 2. Lawn Mower Love. Before you crank up the lawn mower, give it a little love. Make sure the blades are sharp. Dull blades tear at the grass rather than cutting it cleanly. These shaggy edges not only look bad but are damaging to the plant. You can sharpen the blades yourself, there are plenty of how-to articles online, or take them to a professional. Also, while you’re taking care of your blades, now is also a good time to make sure you have fresh gasoline for your lawn mower. 3. Healthy Lawn Lungs. Over time, yards can become compacted from foot traffic and thatch, but a lush, healthy yard needs to breathe. The best way to do this is by aerating it—poking small holes into your lawn

with a spiked roller. This allows water and fertilizer to penetrate deep to the roots of the grass-blades. Aeration should be done in the spring and again in the fall. 4. Don’t Scalp Your Lawn. It may be tempting to drop your mower deck in the spring and give your lawn a good buzz cut, however, scalping your lawn like this can seriously damage the grass-blades. You should never cut more than a third of the blade off at one time. The grass-blades need sunlight to develop a strong root system to sustain themselves through Georgia’s hot summers. Overdoing It. Mom was right— there can be too much of a good thing. Overfertilizing can burn your lawn and cause the grass-blades to grow faster than the root system. To prevent this from happening, use a slow-release fertilizer and make sure to follow the directions on the label before applying. This slow-release method allows your lawn to get a balanced amount of nutrients that are released over time. Overwatering is the other side of overdoing it. Mother nature typically provides plenty of spring rain, but if you need to water, a good rule of thumb is an inch per week. If you are not sure about how much water is hitting your lawn, consider getting a rain gauge. Joe Washington TV HOST • MASTER GARDENER • HOMEBODY By Katherine Michalak

Joe Washington dug into a broadcasting career long before he found himself hosting “Groundbreakers” on HGTV. Raised in Washington state, he studied communications and broadcast journalism at The Evergreen State College, and, as he says, “learned the business by getting thrown into the deep end of the pool. I was able to take a tool I had, my voice, and put it to use.” In 1976, he joined Atlanta’s original 11Alive team as a weekend news anchor and reporter. Eight years later, Joe became a sports anchor at the station. He eventually shifted to freelance, quickly building a portfolio of corporate work, hosting, acting, and voiceovers. Then, in 1999, the “Groundbreakers” job sprouted in his path bringing a familiar hobby into the spotlight for him. “My parents were avid gardeners and it was part of my regular chore list,” he remembers. “When I became a homeowner myself, I embraced it too.” The series aired for 13 seasons with Joe hosting and absorbing the details of projects featured.

Afterward, Joe continued freelancing, but his green thumb led him to earn master gardener certification. “I’d rather be puttering around the yard than puttering around the golf course,” he quips. He developed a relationship with the Atlanta Home Show as a presenter, and began learning about aging-in-place renovation including adaptive gardening. “People want to stay in their own homes, so I delved into research on aging-in-place. … It’s difficult if you have challenging terrain or don’t have the right tools.” Joe plans to stay in his East Cobb home. “It was rural when I moved here [35 years ago]. I wanted privacy out of the city. My subdivision has great diversity and I like the way the whole county has grown in that respect.” Around the area, Joe enjoys Zamá Mexican Cuisine & Margarita Bar and breakfast at Reveille Café. “I like to eat really good food, but I’m mostly a homebody. So, I cook and grill year round.” He can often be spotted at The Home Depot off Shallowford Road envisioning his next home improvement project. Joe also serves on the board for the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension – Cobb County, which facilitates the largest master gardener organization in Georgia. So Fresh and Clean 3 Maintenance Recommendations for Bedrooms We spend a lot of time in our bedrooms, so it makes sense that we would want to keep them looking fresh. Aside from general cleaning, here is some advice for keeping this well-used space in top shape: • Make sure to flip or rotate your mattress every three to six months. Not only does this help even out wear over time, it’s also good for your back. • To keep dust mites at bay, invest in a zippered dust-mite cover (not made from plastic) and be sure to wash your bedding once a week in hot water. • Switch the direction of your fan to counterclockwise in the summer and clockwise in the winter. This can help you save on energy bills by creating cool downdrafts and warm updrafts.

Adi Viden, owner of Viden LLC, has some important wisdom to offer for bathroom upkeep: • When it’s time to replace or upgrade your bathroom vent, hire a pro. The job can involve a lot of variables like electrical work and more and is not a do-it-yourself project. • Invest in a good fan! Fans are responsible for removing excess humidity (which breeds mold). You want a strong fan from a trusted name like Panasonic, not a budget-friendly brand. • When you replace your showerhead, make sure the rubber gasket fits to avoid leaks. And if your showerhead is plastic, be careful not to use too much force or it may break.

Nature’s Beauty (Top) “The homeowner wanted a tranquil space inspired by nature,” Radhika Vydianathan, owner and principal designer at Kalaa Chakra Interiors, LLC/KCI Design, says about this bedroom in Roswell. “Instead of using a nature-inspired wallpaper, I used Palecek Deco Leaf Indoor/Outdoor Wall Decor [made of hand-cut tin leaves welded on a wire frame] over a turquoise colored wallpaper to create a floral pattern on the wall and add dimension and texture to the space.”

David and Laurel Mullikin, the husband and wife design team at Infinite Home, created this bathroom in their own home in Suwanee three years ago for their then 12-year-old son. Since he was a big fan of the outdoors, they incorporated wood-like tiles on the walls and floor. They waterproofed the entire room and installed a trench drain.
