sketch for a paneled kitchen reminded designer Joel Kelly’s clients of their visit to Hollywood’s storied Sunset Tower lounge during a shopping trip to Los Angeles. Seeing his clients’ positive response, Kelly set out to fulfill their dreams of a cosmopolitan kitchen. “When a client looks at you, and their eyes widen and that little grin comes over their face, they don’t even have to say anything and you know you’ve hit a home run at that point,” he says. “And as a designer, it’s what you live for.” The evocative kitchen with bespoke details anchors the end of a formal entertaining space but doesn’t shout, “I’m a working space.” The home’s “stripped traditionalism” was a starting point to blur the lines between utility and theater, seen in the slightly deco detailing of the walnut. “It’s just a really beautiful paneled room at that point,” Kelly says. The wood, stone and steel convey a strong sense of handiwork, which helped create a sense of history in the new residence. The handmade quality of the surfaces gives the kitchen an intimate feel, Kelly says. The high ceiling required thoughtful consideration and ultimately was wrapped in double layers of walnut, which, along with the deep upper cabinets, give it the aura of a paneled room. The integrated refrigerator columns helped create a seamless wall of cabinetry; even the dishwashers and hood liner disappear into the sophisticated surroundings. A second island was crucial for entertaining, while the side steel panels with rivets, in a waterfall-like configuration, beg to be noticed in the masculine space. “One might imagine this kitchen in a penthouse apartment, which resonates well with clients who have lived in upscale urban environments,” Kelly says. “It’s reminiscent of their past chapters but is also expressive of where they want to go.”

esigners Jennifer Reiner and Robert White created the ultimate hangout space for their clients and their four sons. Innovative custom features give the modern farmhouse kitchen a restaurant-like quality that melds Reiner’s experience in commercial design with White’s residential background. “We always invent things that don’t exist. That’s what designers do,” Reiner says. The custom 13-foot vent hood made of forged raw steel served as an inspiration for the kitchen in the new 14,000-square-foot Atlanta home. The vent hood, with industrial flair and old-world details such as riveting, and the laser-cut, porcelain tile backsplash in a modern key-lock pattern are dazzling focal points. The designers balanced rustic cues with bright modernism for the high-functioning and comfortable space their clients desired. Dual islands are wrapped in waterfall surfaces that further the modern, clean lines of the room. The brass detailing in classic pendants, which they spotted in the lobby of the Austin, Texas’ Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt, combine with chrome and stainless steel in the kitchen. It’s their version of metallurgy—the science of extracting and refining metals. “Somehow they all kind of work together, and the alchemy of that is something that we’re really proud of and excited about because we don’t like to match everything,” White says. Across the room, banquettes and chairs surround custom tables by Bradley, which extend to form one 17-foot table with seating for more than a dozen kids ready for homework and holiday meals. Cast-concrete bases are carved to look like petrified wood, befitting the modern farmhouse style. Behind a bank of refrigerators, the hidden walk-in pantry serves as a spot for grab-and-go meals, drinks and snacks. Motorized solar shades shield the pantry and its shiplap walls from the afternoon sun.“We wanted the kitchen to feel pretty epic, and the only way to do that really is to think on a grander scale,” White says.

cramped and dated 1980s kitchen required a complete reinvention to be elegant and livable for a young family with three children. Enter interior designer Courtney Giles Decker and architect Brandon Ingram, who teamed up to reorient the kitchen as an entertaining hub. At the center of the larger, reimagined space is a marble backsplash in a modified geometric pattern from Walker Zanger, accompanied by blues bursting forth in the white kitchen and breakfast rooms. “[The clients] wanted a classic kitchen with a twist, Giles Decker says. 24

The kitchen doubled in size as the layout was reworked to better respond to the family room. Convenient spaces for hardworking elements emerged, via the new laundry and pantry with bold blue cabinetry. “That gives it a little pop that people weren’t necessarily expecting,” Giles Decker says. A grass cloth Thibaut wallpaper echoes the cabinetry, painted Benjamin Moore’s Andes Summit, and the floral linen draperies in the breakfast room. Wood walls and steel windows and doors, including a round window above built-in storage, retained the kitchen’s classic detailing but with a little edge. A bar wraps from the kitchen to the dining space, with glass-front cabinets that showcase the family’s crystal collection. Not everything was new, however. The homeowners’ existing breakfast table and chairs were used, with a Schumacher print added to the backs. Antique ginger jars serve as classic accessories, while open lanterns above the stained island match the finish of the breakfast room fixtures. “My aesthetic probably changes from client to client,” Giles Decker says. In this kitchen, the feel is “young and free.” 26

COUTURE COOL A family’s renovated kitchen by designer AMY MORRIS is functional yet fashion-forward Written by LORI JOHNSTON Photographed by EMILY FOLLOWILL

F KITCHENS ARE THE HEART OF THE HOME, then Amy Morris makes them beat faster. The interior designer aims for her kitchens to serve as beautiful backdrops for her clients, including this entertaining-savvy family of six, which includes two adult children, as well as a 17-year-old and a 7-year-old. “It’s about setting the stage for them, which is important in everybody’s home,” Morris says. Sarah and Bobby Batson welcomed Morris’ fashion-forward design plans in their remodeled Brookhaven home. A book-matched chevron backsplash and a cascading marble island are couture-like details that transformed a once-traditional kitchen with white cabinets into a provocative, modern space. “They have a love and respect for contemporary,” says Morris. “They are willing to take that extra step with design, which is what we did with the countertop.” The linear veining in the Marmara marble countertop and oversized backsplash infuse the kitchen with a bold sense of movement. But fashion couldn’t replace function. The marble drops down into a table, which serves as an intimate space for the parents to dine and chat facing their children, instead of perched on counter stools and eating shoulder-to-shoulder. Renovations knocked out a wall so that the kitchen has more of a galley-style layout and opens to a more formal adjacent dining area used for full family dinners and entertaining. 47

Early Roots In 2000, Courtney and Randy Tilinski joined then-pioneers Bacchanalia and Taqueria del Sol by taking a chance on the up-andcoming neighborhood that is now the bustling and booming Westside. One of the first retailers recruited by developer Michael Phillips, Randy says he fondly remembers the process of getting the Bungalow Classic showroom off the ground and running— which at one point included “cleaning our paint brushes in Annie [Quatrano’s] sink!”

Firmly Planted Over the past 17-plus years, Bungalow Classic has staked its claim as a decorating staple for top local, regional and national designers. Known for its crisp, clean-lined approach to design (once revolutionary in a region that prided itself on its chintz), Bungalow Classic has also championed the work of local artisans, creating a private label with Atlanta textile designer Clay McLaurin as well as representing Athens artist Susan Hable.
Anthology In fall of 2016, Courtney and Randy debuted the Bungalow Classic Collection for Highland House Furniture at High Point Market to much acclaim. The “Courtney” bed, a fully upholstered four-poster with a feminine scallop, quickly became a social media sensation—and, an early indicator of success for the newly minted collection, which also included chairs, sofas, a love seat, cocktail and console tables, and an étagère. “The collection with Highland House has been a great marriage,” says Courtney. “We all wanted to provide a thoughtful collection within an industry where there is no shortage on design, and we are constantly in conversations of how to make important pieces and continue to demand the best quality possible from our factory.” Even better, says Randy, the Bungalow Classic for Highland House pieces play well with others—important for their showroom, which carries furniture lines such as Verellen, as well as interesting objects and antiques. “Our collection is very à la carte, so you can make it your own through the finishes, whether it’s painted or stained, and they also work well with antiques and other collections,” he says. “We love the energy of the brand and the collaboration,” Courtney enthuses. “Good, quality people making good, quality things.”
“Our pieces mix well with modern and traditional. We must meet in the middle to bridge the gap.” —Randy Tilinski 51

FROM MILLION-DOLLAR HOMES in Buckhead to the O’More Designer Show House in Nashville (left), the scullery kitchen, or butler’s pantry, is making a comeback. Functionality is the appeal, but the spaces are moving beyond simple storage to replace wet bars and include appliances such as microwaves and warming drawers, says architect Carson Looney of the example pictured. Some are spacious enough to accommodate catering staffs and buffet-style serving. Architect Andrew Cogar, president of Historical Concepts, says he’s seeing the space come back along with other closed-off kitchen spaces, such as the larder, which he describes as a romanticized version of a pantry with open food storage. Do these ancillary kitchen spaces signal a revolt from the open floor plan? “I’m starting to see indicators of that,” Cogar says. “Would I be surprised in 10 years if you have the closed dining room and then more clearly separated functions? Not at all. But for now, this is the happy medium.”

AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham AS YOU WELL KNOW BY NOW, MY ADVANCING AGE is constantly on my mind. On the one hand, I don’t want to look like a fading grande dame, but on the other hand, I don’t wish to look like I’m trying too hard to be youthful, either. That’s why you’ll typically find me wearing something a little daring by Tom Ford, mixed with something classic, such as Akris. And when it comes to decorating, I take the same careful approach. My home and I are not quite ready to settle completely into a world made entirely of chintz and damask (too granny), yet we also don’t want rooms full of those brash colors and layer upon layer of pattern that the youngsters are gravitating to these days. My home and I both aged out of that kind of aesthetic exuberance years ago. With the new year ahead of us, I have decided that 2018 is the year that I finally take the plunge and do things to my home that I have always wanted to do. I figure that a few stylish gestures might imply that I’m younger than I look. First up, I’m going to outfit my entry hall in antiqued mirror on the walls and silver tea paper on the ceiling, both of which will bring a little razzle-dazzle to that bijou space. The bonus is that every time I look at my reflection in the mirror, the antiqued finish will obscure my wrinkles and under-eye bags. Also on tap is covering my living room walls in mossgreen velvet. But why stop there? I’m going to cover the crown molding in it, too, just like that great French decorator, Georges Geffroy, used to do. And if, by then, my budget isn’t shot, I plan to make my powder room a temple of all things chinoiserie, from the bamboo-patterned wallpaper to the window’s pagoda valance, accented with little Chinese bells. Oy vey! There is so much to do next year, I’m getting frown lines just thinking about it!

ITALIAN HAVEN Indigo Road’s DONETTO brings a taste of Tuscany to Atlanta’s Westside WRITTEN BY Claire Ruhlin

f you ask chef and partner Michael Perez, the idea for Donetto originated a few years ago, during a conversation he had at a Slow Food brunch with Miller Union’s Steven Satterfield. “He mentioned to me that there really isn’t much as far as Italian on the Westside,” says Perez. “I spoke with Steve Palmer [of
hospitality and consulting group The Indigo Road] about the idea, and we kept our eyes open for a couple years. Sure enough, the building right across the street from Miller Union opened up. I think this little corner of town is quickly turning into something very special.” Donetto—named after the largest recorded Chianina bull—opened in September 2017 in West Midtown’s Stockyards development and presents a Tuscan-inspired menu that includes house-made pastas, bread, cheese and meats. “We aim to educate our guests on what Italian food can be,” says Perez. “I feel like the climate in the Tuscan region is similar to the Southeast, and I really want to have a focus on what grows around us.” The restaurant itself—punctuated by modern metal, porcelain tile and oak paneling—is broken up into a variety of seating experiences, with views of the kitchen, bar and outdoor patio. “While the food is Italian, we intentionally made no overt references to looking like ‘an Italian restaurant,’” notes

Jubilant Design The breakfast room— part of an addition designed by Spitzmiller & Norris that also includes a family living area and screened-in porch—plays an essential role in the family’s everyday life and even festive occasions, such as the young daughter’s birthday party. right For the game room, Musso Design Group designed a travertine bistro table that has since become one of their signature furniture designs.

THE RENOVATION OF THIS BUCKHEAD HOUSE had all the potential for a gripping reality television show. The Southern-born husband leaned firmly in the traditional camp, while the wife, whose roots are in France, desired a look that was sleek and more contemporary. Enter a duo of residential designers known for their classical architecture prowess, who
64
had conceived the house’s plans 30 years prior but hadn’t been involved in their execution and were less than pleased with what had been constructed. Then hire interior designers who describe their firm’s work as streamlined and edited, who can practically finish each other’s sentences but also freely admit they don’t always see things the same way. Surely a few

Organic Appeal The homeowners sought a space that would encourage an indoor/outdoor lifestyle; NanaWall’s bifold doors between the living area and screened-in porch increase the scope of living space many months of the year. right The architects and interior designers struck a balance between traditional tastes and modern design in the living room with streamlined furnishings anchored by walls wrapped in shiplap. 65

sparks were destined to fly. While initially the homeowners’ goal was to redo the kitchen and add on a family living area and screened-in porch that would be open and light-filled, the scope of the project eventually spilled into almost every corner of the house. For Frederick Spitzmiller and Robert Norris of Spitzmiller & Norris, revisiting a house they had envisioned all those years ago proved to be immensely satisfying. “The bones and floor plan were good, but a number of the details had been misapplied or exaggerated,” Norris says. “This was the opportunity to make it right.” As they were designing the addition, they corrected many of the exterior and interior elements, often just by going back to their original drawings. However, they also incorporated a few architectural surprises, collaborating with interior designers Bill Musso and Seth van den Bergh of Musso Design Group on details such as steel-wrapped fireplaces in the kitchen and addition. “The homeowners were openminded about rethinking room designations and letting their house be read in a different way than it was presented to them when they purchased it,” says Spitzmiller. For Musso and van den Bergh, the challenge was to meld the couple’s aesthetic differences to create a scheme that would flow seamlessly from room to room. One aspect the clients agreed upon from the start: They 66

Power of Panache
In a cozy study that was formerly the living room, a ship model nods to the couple’s love for sailing. Wooden boxes with the surprise of red lacquer inside are mounted on the wall for storage. below Black lacquered walls envelop the game room. “There were three somewhat disparate pieces we needed to incorporate: a painting from New Orleans, a mustard velvet chair and a large armoire made by the wife’s grandfather,” says van den Bergh. Adds Musso, “The common thread is they all have a French feel to them.” A Cassina chair, originally designed by Gerrit Rietveld in the 1930s, adds another bold punctuation point. opposite The Musso-designed bistro table, here executed in marble, creates an intimate work area when pulled up to a window seat.

Classic & Current The dining room, left and below, is framed by ombré drapery panels that shift from natural linen to indigo. The room illustrates Musso Design Group’s deft hand for mixing traditional and contemporary elements, with silver-leaf consoles, a vintage chandelier, antiqued mirrors etched by artisan Amy Smith in a Rothko-like pattern, a silk mural wallcovering from Armani Casa and a dining room table that was brought down from the homeowners’ Maryland house. “It’s a bit of everything old, new, borrowed and blue,” says Musso. right Many of the service area’s details were designed with Oscar, the family’s bichon frise, in mind. Greg DeLoach, the project’s contractor, charred barn doors in the mudroom and laundry area with a Japanese method called shou sugi ban to give the wood a deep charcoal appearance and highlight the grain.

Layered Luxe Although the master bedroom wasn’t initially marked for redecoration, ultimately it, too, received the Musso touch. A tall drapery panel, a mirrored screen from Logan Gardens and an undulating headboard created a tiered effect. “We love the idea of playing with layers rather than strong pattern to add interest,” says van den Bergh. The architectural photograph is by Anderson & Low from Jackson Fine Art.

Natural Splendor To create the feeling of a cohesive living space, Musso Design Group’s color palette—along with a few bursts of chevron pattern— travels from the family room to the screened-in porch. Chaise longues on the loggia echo a daybed designed by Musso. Suspended from the ceiling, it is a modern nod to a porch swing but roomy enough to accommodate afternoon naps.

wanted the addition to be conducive and convertible to indoor/outdoor living. “Once we established the look of the addition, we didn’t want there to be a disconnect between what was new and what was existing,” says Musso. The wife remained firm about wanting a pared-down approach with clean lines and a restrained palette, which fell right in line with the designers’ own sensibilities. But throughout, the designers always kept the husband’s preferences in mind. “They both share a love of the water and sailing, so we found that any time we could give things a slightly nautical spin, he would be happy,” says van den Bergh. Adds Musso: “Having an architectural framework that was mostly traditional helped bridge the gap as well.” Ultimately the collaboration would not result in a mid-episode meltdown or anyone being “voted off the island.” “Because there were always a number of design opinions and options around the table, the clients never felt they were being talked into any one particular point of view,” says van den Bergh. Indeed, after a two-year process that all involved describe as collegial, the only reality here is a house that truly fits the family who lives in it to a T and is a testament to the fact that a little design give-and-take doesn’t have to mean compromising anything in serious style. WHEN A YOUNG COUPLE DECIDED TO BUILD their dream home and wanted that elusive concept of timeless design to be the guiding factor, they were well served by their first decision— hiring seasoned professionals to accomplish that goal. A consultation with architect Steve Kemp of Kemp Hall Studio about a renovation turned into a conversation about a new home. Kemp, who had worked extensively with interior designer Yvonne McFadden,

made that introduction, and there was an immediate connection. “We all wanted a home that would convey the couple’s down-toearth nature but still have a bit of a wow factor stylistically,” Kemp explains. “It has great presence in the picturesque country setting, but there’s restraint in the details, with a great emphasis on the lines and the materials.” The exterior’s smooth plaster has a mottled patina, so it’s not too severe, and curves in the side buttresses, front
door and parking pad soften the façade. The depth of the house is purposely shallow to allow light to pour in at every opportunity and keep it grounded in nature. For the interiors, McFadden chose Benjamin Moore’s Horizon throughout, including the trim. “This neutral provides a perfect backdrop for the couple’s growing art collection and allows character to come through with color in the fabrics, rugs and finishes 79

High Contrast The horizontal, custom-finished white oak plank cabinetry by Morgan Creek Cabinet Company plays a starring role, bringing warmth to the kitchen against the starker natural quartzite with its gray and blue-green tones. left “The small details in the kitchen, which include the metal banding at the counters and quatrefoil finger pulls, create a purposeful pop of detail on a very personal level,” says Kemp. “The details sit waiting to be discovered.” opposite A bay of windows in the great room creates a jewel box effect for a niche that houses the grand piano. 81

throughout,” she says. White oak flooring also contributes to the airy feel of the entire house. The graceful central staircase acts as a piece of sculpture to admire upon entering. “While a focal point, the stair doesn’t interrupt the connection from the exterior through to the massive steel window beyond,” says Kemp. Decoration in the space is spare but significant. “The bench is a juxtaposition with a traditional design but upholstered in a bold geometric fabric with a bit of sheen,” says McFadden. “It brings tons of personality.” In the era of the white kitchen, the design in this home is a meaningful departure. “The textured grain of the white oak planking, which goes up to the ceiling, adds organic interest and contrasts with the smooth natural quartzite countertops,” says Kemp. Adds McFadden, “The family has two young children, so the choices are also very user friendly. They don’t have to worry about nicking painted cabinets, and we leathered the finish of the quartzite, giving it a texture that is very forgiving.” These are just a few of the meticulous details in a home that’s full of them at every turn—moments of thoughtful and timeless design. See Resources, Back of Book.
Serene Retreat The master bedroom overlooks the scenic countryside; the room is punctuated with an antique silver-framed mirror and iron chandeliers that serve as bedside lamps. left The smartly designed wet area of the master bathroom encloses both the soaking tub and shower in glass. 82

Warm Welcome “The house is inspired by C.F.A. Voysey, the modernist architect of his day,” says Kemp. “The design embraces simple roof lines and side buttresses, which extend the home beyond the walls, reaching out elegantly and embracing the site.” left The outdoor room provides transition from the lower level to the pool and entertaining areas. McFadden filled it with slipcovered swivel chairs from Lee Industries and a sofa with pillows in a Janus et Cie fabric. opposite A leaded hood with scalloped details gives the friends and family entrance a stylish identity. 87

Purpose Driven “In small spaces, I like to do things that are modular and have items serve multiple purposes,” says Wheeler in reference to the living room’s concrete tables on casters by Oso Industries. The artwork is by Katie Walker, represented by Sandler Hudson Gallery, and the rug is Moattar.

Contemporary Classic The homeowner’s most prized possession—a striking modern painting passed down from his grandfather—holds court in the dining area. Wishbone chairs from Design Within Reach were selected in a black finish for a more dramatic effect. The light fixture, by Serge Mouille, was used throughout the residence to provide continuity. opposite The two-tone kitchen features a durable modern quartz, while walnut adds warmth and cohesion with the home’s antique wooden furnishings. To maximize storage, the new island was designed with push cabinets in the front. The cabinetry was fabricated by Royal Custom Cabinets.

WHEN A SUCCESSFUL PERIODONTIST swapped out his four-bedroom home for a cozy Atlanta pied-à-terre, it was a seemingly perfect match for the bachelor’s on-the-go lifestyle. Its Midtown location allows him to easily walk to his practice during the week while also affording him the opportunity to jet away to his second home in Key West when the weekend approaches. Yet while the setting was ideal, the interiors left much to be desired. “Picture ‘builder beige’ from top to bottom,” says interior designer James Wheeler, who was called upon to modernize the dated dwelling. But before he could tackle the travertine floors and bland finishes, the inefficient layout needed to be addressed. “The original architecture didn’t lend itself to the most use of space, if you will. There were

Streamlined Style Describing the before as “brown and dark,” Wheeler reimagined the master bath as a fresh and airy space wrapped in Carrara marble from Stonelluxe. The vanity chair is by A. odd faux walls and wasteful angles,” explains Wheeler. So with storage and functionality top of mind, he took the condo down to the studs to make way for a more thoughtful floor plan that maximized every square inch of living space—a must for the downsizing homeowner. With a blank canvas in place, it was time for the real fun to begin. “I consider him a dream client because he gave me a broad overview of what he was seeking and then left the interpretation to me,” says Wheeler. “He has this love of midcentury and modern design, but he also has an equal love for antiques that reflect his Southern heritage.” Tasked with unifying these contrasting styles, Wheeler kept the walls a pure white to provide a crisp, neutral base for the client’s treasured heritage antiques, while warm woods like walnut in the kitchen offer a sense of cohesion. The homeowner’s midcentury pieces also quietly blend into the design scheme. For instance, a 92
classic leather Eames lounge chair in the living room sits adjacent to an antique wooden table that has been passed down through generations and serves as an impromptu bar during frequent gatherings. An heirloom silver ice bucket on its bottom shelf is also always at the ready. For quieter moments, the homeowner retreats to the dark and cozy media room. Here, Wheeler took inspiration from his client’s plaid wool suit by enveloping the room in a textural wallcovering almost identical in look and feel, giving the space major midcentury appeal. Wheeler was careful, however, to balance the decidedly masculine feel with an antique drop-leaf table. “I enjoyed the challenge of combining different periods,” says Wheeler. “Everything from a structural standpoint in the home may be new and modern, but we’ve woven in a lot of character, as nearly every piece tells a story. And that’s ultimately what a home should be—a reflection of our lives and history.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Crown Jewel Kitchens
I
T’S 2018 AND THE DINING ROOM has suffered the same demise as mom jeans, golden oak and Formica countertops: It’s gone. In its place is the 21st-century crown jewel of the house: the open-concept kitchen with a massive statement island and hardware as critically considered as the Duchess of Cambridge’s jewels at the queen’s birthday parade. The kitchen has always been the heart of the home, but today’s kitchens are the pièce de résistance by which architects, designers and homeowners measure themselves. For the fortunate who can afford two kitchens, a large public kitchen with hidden appliances and an island that resembles a landing strip is fabulous for entertaining, while a smaller daily kitchen is where the cereal is spilled and the coffee perks. Although some of America’s most important foodies— Wolfgang Puck, Martha Stewart and Bobby Flay—still have white marble countertops, today’s trendiest opt for sleek quartz. While some traditionalists prefer their quartz in subdued classic colors, trendsetters take the plunge for rich 104
shades of indigo, espresso and lapis with glamorous details such as gold veining. Stainless steel was all the rage until the HGTV phrase “stainless steel appliances and granite countertops” became a tired cliché that could be heard from the outer regions of Arkansas to the aisles of Sears. Since we’ve passed through the brushed-bronze phase and brushed brass became popular in 2017, it will be interesting to see what designers dream up for their next favorite hardware finish. Are custom sterling door handles far off? One might say the next biggest trend is automation. Soon you’ll just wave at that cabinet, and the door will open and your plate will land on the runway island. Since Amazon wants to deliver your Bounty 12-pack by drone, in the near future your toddler and your dog will be able to feed themselves by simply touching a keypad or using voice recognition. As fast as technology develops, so do products that suit our frenetic lifestyles. So what is the real takeaway trend for 2018? Having the confidence to express your individuality—and the luxury to customize your preferences.
