Our November issue is devoted to timeless design and traditional style; on the pages that follow, we tour four classicallly minded residences that were passionately but exactingly designed to suit the needs of their owners, who delight in imbuing their homes with a sense of history and gravitas. From an architectural folly designed by William Litchfield, John Howard and Liza Bryan for a homeowner in need of a space of her own (page 64) to a custom kitchen table (specified in lieu of an island) envisioned as a space to prep food and

BLAKE WEEKS PORTRAIT BY SYDNEY WEEKS; ART BY VENVISIO; STUDIO BY SIMON UPTON CHUCK CHEWNING COURTESY OF CHARLES H. CHEWNING INTERIORS
CHUCK CHEWNING ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Welcome to Atlanta! You’ve recently moved from Savannah. What spurred your decision? CHUCK CHEWNING I was born and raised in Atlanta, where both sides of my family are native Atlantans. I moved to New York in 2008 to become Creative Director at Donghia and Rubelli, leaving Atlanta behind. In 2011, I bought a house in Savannah as a second home to escape NYC on weekends. I fell in love with the charm of Savannah and was able to more deeply connect to SCAD, and the South in general. Last year, I made the decision to buy a home and set up a presence back in Atlanta. I still maintain an office in Savannah. AH&L: You just completed a restoration of the iconic Armstrong mansion in Savannah. What was the most rewarding (or challenging) aspect of this project? CHEWNING: The Armstrong Mansion is a 26,000-square-foot 1919 Beaux Arts masterpiece that has been lovely restored by the hotelier Richard Kessler as a personal residence. The house had been a law office for many years and needed significant restoration to all aspects of the structure. Fortunately, all the original interior and exterior architectural detail and finishes remained. New systems had to be designed and integrated into the historic rooms. This
included new and restored bathrooms and kitchens. The sheer volume, scale and complexity of the property was most challenging to document, design and manage the interior restoration. Mr. Kessler has an extensive collection of decorative arts which we had at our disposal to curate into the interiors. As an example, the house has 125 windows that all had to be dressed in endless fabrics and trims. Each room is a different architectural period and theme and the interior design had to reflect this. The client also has an exhaustive collection of artworks from around the world. With Mr. Kessler, we selected and organized artwork and accessories for all the rooms. In the end, there was a total of 80,000 hours put into the restoration. AH&L: What projects are you working on? CHEWNING: We recently completed a residential project for the owners of Savannah’s James Beard–winning restaurant, The Grey. The house is 1880s Italianate located on Monterrey Square in the downtown historic district and features Charleston side porches, courtyard gardens and a historic interior. The clients are originally from NYC and wanted an interior to reflect their eclectic lifestyle. The house is featured in the October 2019 issue of Elle Décor magazine. Charles H. MR. BROWN’S BAR ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Townhouse by Robert Brown is known in interior design circles for its unparalleled collection of interesting furnishings and accessories— the perfect finishing touches for a project. What kind of product can we expect to find at your new showroom-within-a-showroom, Mr. Brown’s Bar? ROBERT BROWN: Mr. Brown’s Bar is a department within Townhouse, so the barware aesthetics will be the same: clean, classic and well-edited. Think bar trays, cocktail shakers, flasks, carafes, glasses, pitchers, ice buckets and a myriad of other barwares and tools to create the perfect vintage and mid-century bar atmosphere. AH&L: For the gentleman (or woman) who enjoys entertaining, a properly stocked bar is a must. What are the necessary elements? BROWN: It must have a cocktail shaker, bar tools including a corkscrew, bottle opener, and mixing spoons, an ice bucket, and an array of fabulous glasses. A well-stocked bar will include a wide range of spirits, 14
liqueurs, mixers and garnishes. My favorite cocktail is a Gin Corpse Reviver, so I always have gin, absinthe, orange liqueur, lillet blanc and lemons in my bar. Manifest Distilling was featured at our opening, and both the liquors and the bottle designs are award-winning. AH&L: What’s the most interesting backstory about some of the pieces you’ve curated for this initial launch? BROWN: I travel constantly, so I shop everywhere. Some of my favorite bar wares have been purchased in London—one of the world’s most civilized places, and where a good bar is revered. From Mayfair to markets, I’ve uncovered classic first-half of the 20th-century barwares. I’ve also bought pieces from famous collectors like Tommy Hilfiger and Judith Lieber; however, I’ll have to be persuaded to part with the fabulous single-serving cocktail shaker from her collection. LISA ELLIS ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: You are no stranger to hospitality design, having fashioned the interiors for Savannah’s the Florence and Atlanta’s Empire State South, to name two. What was your inspiration for Chuck’s Fish, a concept by Charles Morgan, that is located in an abandoned 1940s Greyhound bus station in Athens? LISA ELLIS: Our inspiration for Chuck’s Fish was born from the in-depth research conducted into period Greyhound bus stations, many of which were exceptionally designed for a time when travel was an occasion in and of itself. These stations, particularly those in larger metropolitan areas, offered lighting, seating, millwork and decorative details that were as fashionable as they were high-quality and utilitarian. Although this bus station was smaller and more modest, our design sought to imbue the space with that combination of functional and stylish details present in bus stations of the day. We also focused on creating a comfortable space that married the identity of the Destin-based restaurateurs with the sense of nostalgia naturally embedded in a historic building. For example, we covered one wall with a larger-than-life historic
mural of a Destin fishing rodeo, which took place just a short distance from the group’s original concept, Harbor Docks Restaurant & Seafood Market. Access to this particular photo came when a man purchased a historic Destin drugstore that had processed film for a notable editorial photographer in the area named Arturo. The new owner discovered his original negatives still present in the store’s photo center. We had the exciting opportunity to comb through those period photos and select the most captivating and appropriate one for the restaurant. AH&L: And what was the beauty of working with original materials like Terrazzo floors? ELLIS: We were excited to have the opportunity to work with the bus station’s original Terrazzo flooring, a highly durable material that refinishes beautifully. It was a pleasure to restore the historic Terrazzo floors, as recreating this exceptional material would’ve been untouchably expensive today. A number of historic bus stations we studied had both a curved side canopy for bus parking and a matching front canopy for patrons. This particular station did not have a front canopy, so we matched the look of historic stations in order to accommodate more outdoor dining and a more exciting front façade. AH&L: Tell us about the unique lighting selections sourced through Scope. ELLIS: Scope Lighting Group is a sister company to Lisa Ellis Design, led by Lisa Ellis, with lighting designer Ashley Booher. The basic approach in this project was to modernize the building from a lighting and controls perspective. We illuminated the space with entirely LED fixtures managed by an app-based Lutron controls package. The primary lighting feature is a collection of large, overlapping concentric rings which vary in heights but are ultimately placed as low as possible to create a sense of intimacy in the main dining area. KILIMS
Vibrant TAPESTRY RUGS provide as much COLOR, PATTERN and IMAGERY as they did in the NOMADIC Persian Empire when they were first created MANY MILLENNIA ago Written by
SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON
above Mathews Furniture anchored a living room with a colorful antique Turkish kilim from Moattar. right For a vividly hued living room, Robert Brown employed a complementary kilim rug to lighten the space.
18
ORIGINS The Bedouin have traversed the globe for millennia, and their nomadic lifestyle gave way to both utilitarian and decorative objects. One of their most significant and global contributions is the kilim: an ancient flat-woven tapestry made from various types of indigenous animal hairs and incorporating symbolic imagery. Used as a ground cover, a decorative accent or a prayer rug, the kilim was an integral part of home life throughout the Persian Empire, Turkey, China, Pakistan, Mongolia and Central Asia—and one that remains popular in homes today.
ANCIENT TECHNIQUES Unlike Oriental rugs that are tightly knotted in intricate patterns, kilims are woven on a loom in a flat, slit-weave method that

produces the sharp diagonal patterns that make the rugs instantly recognizable. The first looms were created in Ancient Egypt around 4,000 B.C., however, the technique has transcended millennia and continents, and today’s construction method remains the same.
IMAGERY, SYMBOLS AND COLORS Popular kilim motifs include running water, protection from wolves and scorpions, good luck and the evil eye—all symbols relevant to providing security amid the dangerous desert and the roving lifestyle of the ancient Bedouin tribes. Female and family symbols are equally common as multigenerational and extended families traveled together across the deserts and throughout continents. The colors of the richly dyed sheep and goat hairs of ancient cultures remain a hallmark of kilims today. Desert colors including sand, ochre, orange, cinnamon and brown are common. Persian blue has always been the color of heaven and spirituality throughout Iranian culture, and it remains one of the most popular kilim colors. White is the symbol of purity in Iranian history, so undyed yarns were frequently mixed with other colors while white provides a neutral ground in many kilims today.

MASS MARKET Unfortunately, because of the flat weave of the kilim, the rugs do not last as long as dense and thickly knotted Oriental carpets; therefore, antique kilims are extremely rare. However, both new and vintage kilims are readily available from a variety of sources. An extraordinary range of patterns, prices and color variations are available to suit every space. From traditionally patterned wool kilims to more contemporary rugs in mixed fibers, kilims are available at a number of price points. Infusing color and pattern while also providing durability at a low cost, kilims are as popular today as they were in ancient Persia. 19

Around town with
Naomi Von Habersham I’VE REALLY BEEN FEELING LOST LATELY, sometimes literally. A few months ago, I was stopped at the intersection of Roswell Road and East Andrews, and for a split second, I lost my bearings and panicked, wondering, “Where am I?” No, I’m not mentally slipping. I blame it on the fact that at one corner of the intersection, there is a property that has been stripped of its trees and is being prepped for major construction, making the once-wooded land unrecognizable. More recently, I was sitting outside of the St. Regis bar, and for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out where the newly built high-rises looming in the distance were actually located. Were they to the east of the Buckhead Triangle or north of it? After decades of knowing Atlanta like the back of my hand, I have come to find that now I don’t know it at all. I’m also flummoxed by the e-scooters that I encounter daily. Up until recently, the only showboat we ever had to contend with while driving was the Birdman of Buckhead, and that was 40 years ago. Remember him? He was the older guy who used to ride his bike through the streets with his arms flapping in the air, and we loved him for it. Today’s hotdoggers, however, aren’t quite so lovable. I know that there are responsible scooter riders out there, but there are an awful lot who are not. Not only are they dodging in and out of traffic and not obeying the rules of the road, they’re dumping their scooters on the sidewalks and in yards. Since when has it become acceptable to discard machinery on our sidewalks with no regard for others? These might sound like the rantings of a grumpy old woman, but it’s nostalgia for what we’ve lost that is making me feel this way. I miss the trees that have been felled, the mom-and-pop shops that have been pushed out by rising rents and the oddball characters like Birdman who were once fixtures of our city. Here’s to the memories.

The Shops Buckhead’s new Vietnamese hotspot, LE COLONIAL, offers a tasteful twist on the classics Written by LAUREN IVERSON Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN HAUTE FRENCH INTERIORS and historic Southeast Asian flavors meld together in celebrity restaurateurs Rick Wahlstedt and Joe King’s latest dining venture, Le Colonial. Inside the 8,100-squarefoot restaurant—designed by Chicago-based architect Mark Knauer—the sophisticated French-Indochina interiors unfold through a series of dining areas that include the main dining room, airy veranda, private event space and the bar and lounge, all of which encourage a “stay awhile” mantra through a mix of ambient music, tropical plants and rattan furniture. Freehanded murals of lotus flowers by Swedish artist Jonas Wickman grace the walls while black-and-white photos of 1920s Saigon allude to a bygone era. And if the interiors aren’t enough to transport and delight, the cuisine certainly will. With their recently launched lunch menu, diners can expect a lighter sampling of menu favorites—including the green papaya salad with pickled carrots and toasted peanuts, or

Colorful concoctions featuring locally sourced vegetables match the eye-catching decor for an unexpected, yet satisfying, array of bold tastes and striking design—all embodying the rich culture that Le Colonial aims to share. “We wanted everything to be multilayered, but we didn’t want to create something unapproachable,” says Obaye. “In all aspects, Le Colonial is much more accessible to the average palette.” lecolonialatlanta.com

“THE MIX OF OLD AND NEW makes this home feel younger, hipper and more current,” interior designer Courtney Giles explains of the stucco-clad, French-inspired manse in Buckhead that she decorated for empty nesters with a large collection of antiques gathered through the decades. A runner with an animal print, for example, accents the serpentine open stairway in the front foyer, perfectly balancing the reclaimed stone flooring and intricate antique chest. A vibrant abstract painting also strikes a more modern note, establishing the palette of aqua, blue and blush tones that can be found throughout the interior. “The foyer is very clean and crisp, and that’s how the rest of the house feels,” Giles says.

Lively Living Designed so that the party can spill outside, the back patio features streamlined furnishings from Kolo Collection.
It faces the formal living room, a light-filled space with a pair of striking black metal-and-glass doors that lead out to the backyard patio. In between them, a contemporary painting over an antique black marble fireplace mantel creates a powerful focal point for a sofa, antique French chairs and a curvaceous upholstered chair with a scalloped skirt. “It shimmers,” Giles says, referring to the metallic stripe in the fabric. A large abstract painting likewise commands attention in the
elegant formal dining room, where an antique chandelier illuminates a glass-topped pedestal table and chairs atop a traditional wool rug. There’s a more casual eating area in the adjacent kitchen, which has traditional white cabinetry and Imperial Danby marble counters. Along the far wall, a custom plaster hood on a floor-to-ceiling marble backsplash gives the space “a modern edge,” Giles says. Lacquering the paneled walls in blue does the same for the husband’s den. Giles took the hue directly from a piece of 35

contemporary art, which she reframed and placed above a plush mohair-covered sofa flanked by a pair of skirted chairs covered in a handsome plaid fabric—an ideal spot to watch football with the grandchildren. The bedrooms, by contrast, feel softer, more feminine. In one of the guest suites, patterned wall-to-wall carpeting and complementary draperies pay homage to the wife’s blue-and-white pottery collection. FOR ONE BUCKHEAD COUPLE, home base has changed addresses a few times over the past 20 years. There was the house they built to accommodate their young and growing family, and later, the townhouse they downsized to upon becoming empty nesters. Realizing they missed having a yard where their grandchildren could play, they recently embarked on building a new homestead, one designed to appeal to each generation, especially their children and grandchildren who live close by and visit often. “A tailored cottage” is how architect Greg Busch describes the house, which is located off of Peachtree Battle Avenue. Granting his clients’ wish for a moderately sized, less-formal residence, Busch conceived a comfortable house with rooms that are, in the architect’s words, “as large as they need to be.” When it came to the home’s

interiors, the couple did as they have for their previous residences and engaged the help of designer Susan Bozeman, who has worked for the homeowners for more than two decades. But rather than go wholly traditional as she did on their first project together, this time Bozeman took a more up-to-date approach, one which respected the couple’s existing collection of traditional furniture and antiques. “Like so many people, the homeowners love their antiques, but we wanted them to feel fresher,” explains Bozeman, who did just that by introducing transitional-style pieces and contemporary art to the mix and imbuing rooms with a sense of lightness. 55

Tranquil Tones left The husband has his own area of the master bath, including a vanity stained in a greige-colored finish. The custom mirror, fabricated by Brooks & Black Fine Framing, hangs in front of the window. right Because the bathtub is the first thing one sees when entering the master bathroom, Bozeman decided to soften the effect and create privacy by installing sheers on a drapery rod that runs around the entire perimeter of the tub.
Foregoing bright colors for soft, tranquil tones, the designer tailored a color palette of neutral shades with blue accents to the wife, explaining, “She is blond and fair, and one of her favorite colors is blue, so a lighter color palette fits into her realm more than vivid colors.” Cumbersome curtains were also shunned, with lightweight fabrics, such as sheers, chosen to soften windows without detracting from the view outdoors. Even the home’s finishes display a light touch, like the painted shiplap used throughout the house, which strikes a dressed-down note and keeps the interiors from skewing too formal. This balance between casual feeling and polished looking extends to the home’s furnishings, which range from Gracie wallpaper and French antiques to sisal rugs and cowhide. While this mix is equally sophisticated and easygoing, it’s the latter quality that is really at the heart of this home’s design. Immensely livable to its empty-nest owners, the house has proven likewise to the rest of the family as well. See Resources, Page 95. 59

Second Home Because the master bedroom is located on the ground floor, the upstairs bedrooms, including this one, are used by both overnight guests and the couple’s grandchildren. By using soft, neutral colors and installing one wide upholstered headboard behind the twin beds, Bozeman created a space that caters to both young and old alike.

Warm Welcome Liza Bryan rearranged the family room to be more conducive to comfort and conversation. Newly purchased items include a French chestnut coffee table from Dearing Antiques and window treatments featuring Misty Paisley by Mulberry Home Fabrics. The draperies are by Willard Pitt Curtain Makers.
A AFTER SPENDING NEARLY TWO decades in their 1930s Buckhead manse, a civic-minded couple was ready to shake things up. They considered moving in hopes of finding a home with a larger yard, but when their two-year long search repeatedly came up short, the couple shifted their focus to transforming their historic Georgian home into their forever home. They began slowly, starting with a simple update to the library. “Really, the whole renovation started with just adding a pair of French doors,” says interior designer Liza Bryan, who the couple enlisted after viewing her work on a neighboring Neel Reid estate. “The library had a small, single window that wasn’t providing much of a view or connection to the outdoors.” So they turned to the couple’s longtime go-to architect Ward Seymour (who came out of retirement as a favor) to oversee the addition of French doors complete with a Juliet balcony that now bathes the library in natural light.

Pleased with the transformation, it wasn’t long before the couple started considering other ways of freshening up their home. Thankfully, Bryan was already one step ahead. “When we first met and I walked through the house, I saw a lot of very pretty things but they were just not in the right place or creating any impact,” she recalls. So after brightening up the walls (they were previously a range of historic colors, but deemed too “muddy”) and widening cased room openings for a better sense of flow, Bryan began what she playfully refers to as “musical chairs”—moving the couple’s extensive collection of art and antiques around from room to room until just the right spot was found. For example, an oversize mural fashioned from a Gracie wallpaper that was once out-of-sight now takes pride of place in the dining room, while a 1923 still life entitled “Tea and Strawberries” was hung in the master bedroom so that the couple can now wake up to their favorite painting every morning. Bryan also transformed seldom-used rooms into more approachable spaces, the most notable being the sunroom. Doors leading to the living room were removed for a more welcoming touch, and a 71

table-and-chairs arrangement now makes it a multipurpose space—an impromptu office for answering emails to a sunny spot for brunch. While Bryan continued to finesse the interiors, the homeowners set their sights on their backyard, or lack thereof. Consisting of a small patio and no lawn, the steep, overgrown site left much to be desired by the outdoor-loving couple with a passion for gardening. So they turned to landscape architect John Howard and architect William B. Litchfield for a solution. Undeterred by the land’s deep ravine, Howard “lifted the property” he says with a series of retaining walls that allowed for the creation of cascading green spaces that lead to a newly built folly on axis with the library. “I wanted the structure to be a stimulating feature of the garden design, and really everything in the backyard evolved from that,” notes Howard. With the folly set to be the centerpiece, Litchfield spared no detail, a hallmark of the classically trained architect. “In researching folly structures from Virginia to the Carolinas to Georgia, and even as far over as Louisiana, this octagonal image kept coming up,” he says. Litchfield used the striking shape as the foundation of the folly 73

design, but while follies are historically meant purely for decorative purposes, this particular structure was planned as a multifunctional space. So while it offers the couple a serene spot to enjoy a glass of wine amid the trees, it also doubles as the wife’s art studio. On warm days, she can open the folly’s series of grand 10-foot iron doors for fresh air or switch on the heated flooring during cooler months. These modern conveniences are seamlessly integrated amid more period-authentic flourishes by Litchfield, including plaster walls and reclaimed limestone floors. Overhead, exposed wood framing follows the shape of the octagonal copper roof to make it seem as if the plaster had fallen down over time. “I don’t think I’ve ever worked on something where the detail is as exquisite as this,” notes Bryan, who complemented Litchfield’s pitchperfect design with beautiful accents such as an antique painting easel. Litchfield also brought his design-narrative approach to the garage addition. “I love for every project to have a storyline, so for the garage, I came up with the concept that it could have been 75

Peaceful Retreat opposite Although recently planted, Howard designed the gardens to look well established. above For the potting shed, architect William B. the old stable where they kept horses at one time,” he explains. Stable doors on either side, with the center door opening to the backyard, now provide extra space for food, tables and even a dance floor when the couple hosts larger groups of guests. And with the gardens thoughtfully designed to “look good in every season,” says Howard, entertaining in the backyard can be a year-round affair. As winter approaches, fragrant daphne will bring the gardens to life, while viburnum and hydrangea are set to bloom in the springtime. “It all came together like a symphony,” says Litchfield, reflecting on the home’s threeyear transformation. “I’m thrilled they ended up seeing the potential in their home and even more so that they put together a great team to show them what could be.” Bryan agrees. “They use every inch of the home now,” she says. “They’re able to truly love a place that they almost thought about selling. I’m so glad they gave it a second chance.” See Resources, Page 95. 77

SUBTLE CHANGES CAN OFTEN YIELD GREAT RESULTS— not every floor plan needs to be totally reconfigured or every wall torn down for a successful renovation. An English cottage in the heart of Buckhead displays this sentiment at every lovely turn. Architect Yong Pak and interior designer Carter Kay inherited a project with innate charm that required some detailing here and there to suit the needs of the new owner. “We really wanted this house to be like a jewel box inside and out,” says Kay. “Changes were made to make the house more customized for our client and to set the stage for her antiques.” With that view, a box-shaped bay

window added to the dining room creates the perfect alcove for a beloved sideboard and allows more natural light into the space. “We added other architectural elements such as plasterwork and a coved ceiling in the kitchen,” says Pak. “We created an arched opening in the living room to mirror an adjacent bookcase, added beams and designed a new mantel to make that space more distinctive.” Other changes included updating the master bath and dressing room and creating a chic vestibule from the living room to the kitchen with a hidden pantry and silver storage. When it came to choices for the interiors, letting go was part 83

of the process. Kay helped her client pare down possessions, and then find ideal locations for the remainder in the scheme of the new rooms. “All the rugs and most of the furniture came from her prior house, so it was more about placement and refreshing,” says Kay. “We painted almost the entire house a neutral white which allows the furnishings, collectibles and beautiful Oriental rugs to be the stars in each room.” Wallpaper dresses the powder bath, a new Frenchstyle Ferrell Mittman sofa shines in the living room along with two bergère chairs re-covered in a muted leopard print. “The living room now gives off the air of old midcentury Paris,” says Kay. One joyful task for both designer and client involved deciding where to place a vast collection of art and objects of all types. Meissen porcelain stands out on the dining room sideboard; a floral oil still life graces the updated mantel; and a grouping of smaller works of art adds elegance to the powder bath. All these special pieces come to life in the renovated house, drawing the eye around each room. The spaces feel curated and sophisticated, but with room to breathe. Every detail is considered—just like a made-to-measure haute couture gown—and accomplished what everyone hoped for. See Resources, Page 95. 87

LIFE
END NOTE
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
WHEN WE CLEANED OUT OUR GARAGE in September, a few rolls of holiday wrapping paper twirled out from a corner. I don’t know why they were plonked standing upright instead of neatly stored with all the other holiday boxes and bags; however, it did beg the question of whether to bother packing them since we’d soon need them. Every year the holidays creep up a little faster. Each year I swear off buying more decorations and wrapping supplies. Alas, without fail, I start buying gifts before summer’s end, and my collection of ribbons and bows continues to grow. I’m a complete and utter failure with holiday resolutions. Perhaps my failed resolutions are because I’ve always loved the holidays. I don’t know if it’s because SiriusXM Radio launches into “Jingle Bells” on the day after Halloween, or the autumn leaves crunch in a way that makes me feel festive enough to eat turkey one day each year, or the endless entertainment of Ralphie and his Red Ryder BB Gun in “A Christmas Story” gets 96
to me, but for a few weeks, the city feels optimistic, generous and entertaining—and I buy into it every year. The owner of this magazine is a Deadhead, so I hope he’ll forgive me for feeling sentimental when I hear Dan Fogelberg’s “Same Old Lang Syne.” That said, he’ll probably fire me for admitting that I know all the words to John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Jerry Garcia might sing about “Truckin’” but that doesn’t inspire me to string lights across the porch and deck the halls. For me, the holidays are about the sweet melodies, both literal and metaphorical, of home: being with family and friends— even the crazy ones I avoid the other 51 weeks of the year. Whether you’re traveling from the kitchen to the dining room, down the street or across the country, may your holidays take you home, or perhaps help you take “home” to those in need, both in our city and farther afield. Whether short or long, familiar or new, may the path you travel take you to the people and places you love. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Home … wherever this finds you.

For the 11th annual Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is partnering with Frank Heery of Harrison Design for the architectural design; The O’Donnell Group, the developer also charged with interior selections and specifications; as well as White Oak Fine Homes and Firelight Homes for this beloved event. The venerable design-build team will transform a modestly-sized 1950s-era Saltbox at the end of a long drive on a nearly four-acre forested lot in Sandy Springs. “It was a well-built house, and we wanted to show people what you can do with a renovation,” Heery says. The 6,500-square-foot, five-bedroom abode will include several new additions, each built with limestone foundations and clad with
handsome wood lap siding. A distinctive new office tower on one end of the house will be balanced by a master bedroom wing on the other, its attached bath cantilevered over the verdant grounds like a floating glass box. A second glass enclosure will contain a sculptural staircase that connects all three levels, offering lush backyard views while flooding the interior with natural daylight. The additions give the house a sense of history and a narrative. “You can imagine that it was added onto over time,” Heery says. “You don’t always have to build new.” Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is thrilled to have you as a guest this holiday season at the 2019 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse. Cheers to the holidays—and Atlanta design!
William H. Harrison of Harrison Design serves as our 2019 Honorary Chair, and we are also honored to partner once again with our beneficiary, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, to support their commitment to provide specialized healthcare for children. During the run of showhouse, don’t miss a lineup of inspiring holiday events, including our ADAC Day of Design, designer panels, floral demonstrations, holiday baking and more. As you tour the showhouse, we encourage you to take inspiration and holiday spirit from the Atlanta design community’s incomparable talent.

Merry Meditation
We have all heard the proverb, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and when you are renovating, you need to make sure you are starting that journey off on the right foot! Join in a conversation with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Editor-in-Chief, Elizabeth Ralls, and the showhouse architectural design team of William H. (Bill) Harrison and Frank Heery, both of Harrison Design, along with developer Andrea Bain of The O’Donnell Group, as they reveal the best practices for approaching renovation projects of all sizes. Discover which contractors need to be involved in the process, and when. Learn how to develop a proper budget, and ultimately, gain an understanding of the most common renovation pitfalls—and how to avoid them.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22; 9:15 A.M. – 10 A.M. Does your stress level mimic the frenetic pace this time of year? We invite you to explore various modalities of meditation to cultivate peace, focus and energy in mind, body and spirit. November Nichols, founder of L’Artisan Muse, a maison on Atlanta’s West Side for all things wellness-oriented, will be your guide toward bringing balance and energy to your body and brain. Before opening hours and in the Home for the Holidays meditation garden, she’ll teach how to smoothly transition from the constant chatter in the thinking mind into the powers of your higher mind. Event is complimentary with showhouse admission but registration is required at atlantaholidayhome.com.
Designing for Wellness FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22; 11 A.M. – 12 P.M. The wellness movement has been influential in nearly every aspect of our modern lives, from the workplace to travel to home design. It has even taken center stage at this year’s Home for the Holidays with a state-of-the art wellness living space. A one hour ASID- and NKBA-accredited CEU is available for design industry professionals. In this presentation, MTI Director of Marketing Michael Kornowa will present “The Wellness Trend,” sharing insights about this movement and how home design practices can incorporate holistic therapies. After the program, Andrea Bain, developer and interior specifications designer with The O’Donnell Group, and Bill Harrison, principal architect of Harrison Design and Home for the Holidays 2019 Honorary Chair, will join Kornowa for discussion and a walking tour of the wellness space.
The Ever-Changing World of Kitchens and Baths 11:30 A.M. – 12:15 P.M. With never-ending possibilities of product, and ever-evolving trends, how do you stay ahead of the curve? Join Tish Mills Kirk of Tish Design and Randy O’Neil of Renaissance Tile & Bath as they explore do’s and don’ts in kitchen and bath design. Their lively discussion will touch on classic mainstays of design, trends they can’t wait to fade into the distance, and of course, funny and unexpected tales that occur during the process of creating a great design.
Finishing Touches for Signature Style 1:30 P.M. – 2:15 P.M. Transforming a home can be as extensive as a full renovation, or as simple as enhancing the existing space to create updated and refined interiors. Join Showhouse designers James Wheeler, Jena Salmon and Anna Braund as they reveal resourceful ways to complement and strengthen existing room designs. Suzanna Hamilton will moderate this panel of experts as they discuss approachable architectural and finish changes as well as aesthetic design recommendations that will add insight and enthusiasm to your home renovation.

Every year, the Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse delights and inspires visitors with the creative possibilities of outstanding residential design.
After being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor that was surrounded by the speech area of her brain, we were told that our daughter, Melina, needed a miracle. Refusing to accept that diagnosis, we sought a second opinion and eventually found a doctor who was confident he could remove the entire tumor. Two months and countless hospital visits later, surgery day had come and after hours of waiting, the doctor revealed that the surgery was successful—the tumor was completely removed and, with rehabilitation to regain her strength and balance, Melina would go back to being a happy, normal 5-year-old.
As architect, we play a special role as we envisage the design of the residence and, once completed, marvel as so many creative and gifted designers transform the interior with their own vision and talent. It comes together gloriously, creating a truly inspiring experience. I’d like to thank the many craftspeople, artisans and manufacturers who supported this year’s showhouse, and express my tremendous gratitude to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles for this opportunity.
22
And thank you for your visit, which helps support Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Our perspective is forever changed and in so many ways we will always be thankful. To remind us of her strong, fearless attitude, we nicknamed Melina the “Lion Heart.” Our love and appreciation for those who supported us will always be in our hearts, and we are reminded every time we see our Melina. Our Lion Heart.

a bout the a rchitectura l tea m Frank Heery, Harrison Design Harrison Design specializes in high-end residential architecture, interior design and landscape design for clients throughout the U.S. and around the world. From traditional to modern, the firm’s body of work represents the full spectrum of scale and style. Its guiding principle is that while design should be informed by the past, it must be of its own place and time. Frank Heery, who designed this year’s Home for the Holidays showhouse, has been with Harrison Design since he graduated with an architecture degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. A seasoned showhouse veteran, this year marks his fourth showhouse, and, because it’s a renovation, it’s a bit unusual. “This residence is substantially different than my other showhouses. Working with an existing structure changes the dynamics. The fun thing is that it allowed us to be a little quirky and unexpected in terms of the design,” explained Frank. nna Braund is the founder of Atlanta-based Anna Braund Interiors. With a traveled eye and a storyteller’s keen sensitivity for
capturing meaningful detail, Anna creates spaces that are true expressions of beauty, emotion and memory. Believing that no two interiors—just as no two stories— are ever the same, she approaches each new project with a philosophy that design begins with the history of the space and story of the people that live within it.
