EXPRESSION Atlanta designer DAWN TRIMBLE creates her next chapter as a watercolor artist Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

GROWING UP IN Albany, Georgia, Dawn Trimble was always creative. However, when she enrolled in the interior design program at Auburn University, her innate talents were tapped. “I learned to see in a different way and how we respond to it when I began to study design at Auburn,” says Trimble. After completing her Bachelor of Arts, Trimble pursued her master’s degree in architecture and entered the world of commercial design. Trimble’s life unfolded with a marriage, children and a career; however, as busy as she was, something was hollow in her professional life. “I was seeking inspiration, and remembered the beginning days of my design and architecture training focusing on space, composition and light,” says Trimble. “My design training informed my painting—it’s a back and forth relationship.” In 2018 Trimble posted her paintings on Instagram and the response was immediate. She was soon invited to participate in a group show at Kennesaw State University as well as pop-ups at West Elm and Ponce City Market. This year, like many affected by the pandemic, Trimble lost her job. However, she immediately pivoted and embraced life as an artist, and she’s never looked back. Trimble now creates watercolors that are equally bold and delicate. She balances negative space with strong punctuations; subtle and sublime colors with punches of black. Trimble’s most recent collection, “Resilient Landscapes,” speaks to the events of the past year. “The world felt so uncertain in the spring of 2020 with the racial and health pandemics, and I wanted to express the rawness of those emotions in a creative way while pointing to hope,” says Trimble. “We must possess a resilience from within to move through this space we all share.” Trimble is now fulfilled personally and professionally as she pursues her passion while working from her home studio. “I’m an introvert, so I strive to make my thoughts visible with painting,” says Trimble. “When I paint, I’m in a pure place of expression.”

THE SUCCESS OF TRILITH (formerly known as Pinewood Forest), the idyllic planned community in Fayette County, sounds like the stuff of storybooks. Propelled by sustained demand from the first phase, the New Urbanist town has begun construction on phase two, which draws inspiration from Germany’s Black Forest region. “It has a fairytale twist; it’s playful with pops of color that contrast with dark and natural woods,” explains Rob Parker, president of Trilith development. “It adds a bit of a fantasy kind of experience, which fits with the storytelling that happens across the street,” he says, referring to the Trilith Studios (formerly Pinewood Atlanta Studios), one of the largest purpose-built
film, TV and music facilities in North America. The community is designed to hit that Goldilocks sweet spot: not too big, not too small, but just right. “It feels like the right scale and the right approach at the right time for people who are coming out of an urban environment, but who still want an urban experience,” Parker explains. He adds that, thanks to a community plan inspired by quaint European villages, all manner of amenities—including nearly 300,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, fitness, office and entertainment space—are within a 10-minute walk of the homes. It gives residents the outdoor elements of a rural environment with the perks of living in town. trilith.com

WHILE THE PANDEMIC disrupted many hotels’ operations in 2020, properties such as Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead, The Candler Hotel Atlanta and Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta are back serving guests with additional safety and cleaning protocols in place. Meanwhile, Atlanta’s hotel boom continues. Kimpton Sylvan Hotel, owned by Atlanta-based parent company IHG, will open in early 2021 in Buckhead. It’s “an adaptive reuse of a 1950s-era residential property, embracing mid-century modern design mixed with understated sophistication,” says general manager Tristan Haas. The boutique hotel will feature three indoor and outdoor dining options, including an old Hollywood-style supper club, a garden bar and a rooftop bar and lounge. Also scheduled to open in 2021 is the $90 million, 201-key Thompson Hotel in the Buckhead Village district on East Paces Ferry Road, developed by Regent Partners. The 12-story Nobu Hotel & Restaurant at Phipps Plaza will likely open in 2022, and Atlas Capital Ventures is planning a 32-story, 256-key Ritz-Carlton Hotel and 65-home Ritz-Carlton Residences, projected to open in Buckhead in 2023.

Naomi Von Habersham IN THIS ANNUS HORRIBILIS, the holidays will likely be unlike those of previous years. Will family members be able to gather for celebrations? Are small holiday parties advisable? And what will religious services even look like this year? I have so many questions swirling around in my mind, but despite the uncertainty, I will not be deterred from celebrating my holiday, Christmas, with gusto, even if it means a few changes here and there. Instead of decorating a tabletop tree as I have in years past, I plan to go big, as in 9 feet tall. My living room really doesn’t have the space to accommodate such a large tree, but I don’t care. I want big, bold gestures that remind me that even in crazy times, we must forge ahead and celebrate the good things in life. I’m also going a bit overboard on my potted paperwhites and amaryllis, of which I have 10 pots each. Yes, my home is starting to resemble a hothouse, but perhaps that’s appropriate considering I’ve been accused of acting like a hothouse flower more than once this year. I’m also loading in holiday foods like fruitcake, ham biscuits, blinis, smoked salmon and bottles of champagne. Although my annual holiday soiree is officially cancelled, I do plan to invite friends over this month (only one or two at a time) for safe, socially distanced drinks and conviviality on the patio, dependent on the weather, of course. I never thought I would wish for warm temperatures during December, but if there was ever a time for a balmy Christmas, 2020 might be the year. Without a doubt, the holidays will be different, but if this year has taught us anything, it is that we are resilient. No matter how we celebrate, whether it is indoors or outside, with a group of family and friends or alone, let us nonetheless be grateful for all that we have, especially during these challenging times. I wish you the happiest of holidays, and here’s hoping that a better year lies ahead.

E
LEVATING THE ART of everyday living is second nature for Keith Robinson. After all, the celebrated tastemaker has orchestrated some of the city’s most stylish soirees through his event design company, Gloriosa. And while his core focus these days is choreographing the design and creation of beautiful garden and landscape projects across the South (Robinson studied environmental design at university), the renowned host is still sharing his knowledge with others on all things culinary, in the garden and at the table.
Home for Robinson is Redwine Plantation, a 19th-century residence just south of Atlanta in Palmetto, Georgia. It’s also the site of his intimate and socially distanced lifestyle seminars— dubbed “Redwine Sessions”—which cover an array of topics on living the good life and reflect the spirit of each season. Summer classes may have an emphasis on gardening, while December’s classes feature Robinson’s unique imprimatur on the holidays. “The January cooking sessions will be focused on comfort food in different genres,” says Robinson. “From casseroles to soups and stews to roasting to desserts—all of it.” 39

Regardless of season or topic, whether it’s braising, pruning plants or amending garden soil, he adds that his students are craving this sort of 360-degree approach to cooking, gardening and entertaining, even if it’s just for the people in their immediate households. Robinson is also quick to point out that the advice he shares with his students will serve them well long after they’ve left the comfort of the Redwine teaching pavilion, where classes are held. “When people are provided the elements they’re working with, and given hands-on instruction, and the license to create without restriction, they’re a lot more free,” says Robinson. “It’s been beautiful to see people have these breakthroughs.” One student actually cried with gratitude after one of the classes, he confesses. “She said, ‘I didn’t know entertaining could be this easy.’” With a teacher like Robinson, there’s no doubt any one of us could become the host or hostess of our own dreams. Color Story Kirkland transformed the study, originally a more formal library space, into an intimate lounge area for the empty-nester homeowners to enjoy together. She also adorned the walls, painted Farrow & Ball’s Calke Green, with the homeowners’ collection of antique engravings.
F
FOR A PAIR OF EMPTY NESTERS looking to refresh their Buckhead home—and find use for their substantial collection of existing and recently inherited furnishings—discovering Margaret Kirkland Interiors was a lightbulb moment. Drawn to the design firm’s expertise in embracing and repurposing clients’ belongings, the couple knew they’d found the right designer for their second act. “[The client] came to us and said, ‘We’ve been shipped all of this furniture that we want to incorporate, but have no idea how, and are hoping you can help us,’” says Kirkland. “Sometimes the best shopping I’ve done for clients is in their storage unit and in their attics.” Alongside Zach Weiler, the designer did exactly that: found homes for antique treasures and family heirlooms, reupholstered 47

Formal Flair In the living room, Kirkland flanked the fireplace with antique demilune tables and mirrors from Parc Monceau to create a sense of symmetry. To preserve the sofa, originally from the 1940s, the design team added a trim and taller legs and kept the original upholstery.
vintage furniture pieces and reimagined spatial arrangements to tailor the home— which was last renovated in 2008 with Yong Pak of Pak Heydt & Associates and interior designer Carolyn Jones—to the homeowners’ new phase of life. In the study, for instance, the furniture was rearranged (and in the case of the sofa, rebuilt and reupholstered) to create a cozy lounge area the couple could retreat to in the evenings. To add a sense of history, Kirkland filled the space with antique pieces, some of which were cleverly repurposed: an antique gold frame was remade into a mirror, and some of the wife’s antique saris were transformed into lampshades, casting a warm glow after sunset. “Now this is their favorite room to spend time in the evenings,” says Kirkland. “She really cares about antiques and the provenance of things.” This sense of history is also evident in the living room, which Kirkland enlivened with a sizable chinoiserie screen from Florence, Italy. Complementing the home’s rich assortment of heirlooms are intentional touches of new. In the foyer, Atlanta artist Brian Carter customized the existing Christopher Norman wallpaper with hand-painted leaves. The artist also refreshed the kitchen sconces with hand-painted acorns, a nod to the home’s surrounding foliage. The overall result is a sentimental mix of the past, present and future. “Helping clients get their homes to the stage of life that they’re in by reinventing spaces is sometimes the most satisfying,” says Kirkland. “This project has been an evolution of how to add the clients’ personality to their house with a mash-up of pieces that were existing, newly inherited and newly purchased, all in happy harmony.” See Resources, Back of Book.

STEP THROUGH THE DOORS of this classic Buckhead home and you’re immediately embraced by a sense of warmth. It’s a feeling homeowner Laura Deisley, alongside interior designer Beth Ervin, have spent nearly two decades cultivating. Having grown up in the Northeast, Deisley and her husband, Chris, fell hard for the saltbox home originally designed by celebrated architect James Means. Its heart pine floors and Colonial-influenced architectural features offered the couple a sense of nostalgia, and although there was much work needed—laundry had to be done in the shed and the kitchen cooktop had only one working burner, for example—the family of four didn’t rush into renovations. “What I love about our home’s story is that we’re not a family that came from money, and the minute we

walked in, we were able to do everything we wanted,” says Deisley. “As the home has evolved through the years, we’ve loved and lived through every bit of it.” Ervin was more than happy to oblige Deisley’s unhurried timeline, given her own thoughtful approach to design. “I enjoy taking time to pick out rare and unique pieces that can’t be ordered from a catalog,” explains Ervin. “Laura and I were deliberate about selecting things that were just as timeless as the home’s architecture.” In the foyer, they settled on a classic stripe wallpaper that has anchored the space for 15 years, while the living room’s drapes, made of a vintage Rose Cumming silk chintz, are a similar testament to the duo’s affinity for enduring details. Simple updates such as switching out painted wood window rods for metal ones keep things fresh in an understated manner. To address structural changes to the home, the couple enlisted architect Norman D. Askins, whose own work is influenced by James Means. Askins’ two-part renova60

Safe Keeping While the silk drapery has held court in the living room for 15 years, Ervin recently commissioned the seating to be recovered in a cream cotton velvet. Deisley purchased the starburst mirror at a Parisian ea market and carried it by hand through the rest of her travels until it safely landed above the living room mantel, ďŹ tting perfectly within the border of the existing millwork.

tion included a garage addition gracefully integrated into the home’s front elevation and an underground wine cellar. The latter is a marvelous feat that can be accessed through a trapdoor in the floor that’s raised via a pulley system. The cellar is a feature Chris, a budding wine enthusiast who passed away five years ago, would have undoubtedly loved, notes Deisley. The renovations were completed in time for Deisley to host a Christmas party for the 20th anniversary of the Ivy Ridge Garden Club, of which she is a founding member. With merry conversation and glasses clinking, it was a gracious reminder that patience truly paid off. “There were moments we thought, ‘This house needs so much, we have no business staying here,’” recalls Deisley. “But we had a vision of what this place could be; a comfortable and welcoming home we could generously open up to family, friends and the community.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Askins and his team transformed into a wine cellar. In lieu of a traditional staircase, “the floor door was about adding romance to an otherwise transitory space,” says architect Daniel Witt. “With ducts and pipes all around, the challenge to us was to make it charming. Not only did the form of the room need to hide the utilities, but it was important to match the historic character of such a fine house.”

FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD lies a secret little slice of heaven known as Bluefields Bay Villas. Remote and low-key, charming and exclusive, the welcoming Jamaican respite is just what the doctor ordered as we face travel’s “new normal.” Washington, D.C. couple Braxton and Debbie Moncure first discovered the hidden gem of the Caribbean, located on Jamaica’s south coast, some four decades ago. The now expats fell in love with the pristine surroundings and purchased a beach house on the hilly seaside that eventually turned into six villas, and soon an exclusive resort was born. Off the beaten path, just an hour’s drive from Montego Bay Airport, or if you’re feeling luxe, a 12-minute scenic flight via helicopter, this is not your typical beach resort. Void of Olympic-size pools, children’s waterslides, 18-hole golf courses and masses of sunbathers, the allure of Bluefields Bay Villas lies in its private sandy beaches, old-school charm and elegance. BOHO CHIC MUSTIQUE THE SMALL ISLAND of Mustique in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is unlike anywhere else in the world. The hundred or so private villas dotting the hills and private beaches are blanketed by mangrove, subtropical shrubs and climbing vines, so obscured that overall the island looks like a lush wildlife sanctuary. There are no traffic lights, no billboards, no street signs or visible power lines, no nightclubs or golf courses (hop a 10-minute flight to neighboring Canouan Island for that) and, most importantly, no paparazzi allowed. Mustique has a story to tell. In 1958, an eccentric, irascible Scot named Colin Tennant (later Lord Glenconner) bought the island—then virtually uninhabitable—for a mere £45,000 after admiring it from his boat. His vision was to develop a fantasy island that would lure his aristocratic friends to visit and build villas. 74
In the 1960s, development on the island began in earnest. As it happened, Lord Glenconner and his wife, Anne, lady-inwaiting to Princess Margaret, hosted the princess who instantly fell in love with the island. As a wedding gift for the princess upon her marriage to Antony ArmstrongJones, Lord and Lady Glenconner offered up 10 acres at the south tip of the island to build the villa, Les Jolies Eaux. Other British royals soon caught on. The relaxed, barefoot paradise away from their otherwise very public lives was indeed a lure—Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have vacationed here. Locals call Mustique Island a community, not a resort, and it remains on the hot list today because it has adopted Colin Tennant’s Bohemian spirit as its own. It was this mix of escapism and grit, in a world caught
between vacations and real life, that also attracted celebrities and business tycoons wanting the sun and the sea minus the razzle dazzle of, say, St. Barts. Mick Jagger, Bryan Adams, Tommy Hilfiger and David Bowie all built villas here. For architectural direction in the early days, Tennant enlisted Oliver Messel, a British stage designer and, coincidently, the uncle of Antony Armstrong-Jones. Messel designed all the first villas on the island, including Les Jolies Eaux. Today, villa architecture varies according to individual homeowner preferences, but Messel’s signature style is pre-eminent. The island is now owned and governed by the Mustique Company, which in turn is owned by its 104 shareholder-homeowners. At present there are 75 privately owned villas, complete with chefs, butlers, housekeepers and gardeners, that are

There are two hotels: The 7-room Firefly, perched on a hillside overlooking Britannia Bay is known for its Boho funkiness and the best sunset views from Patrick’s Bar. The 18-room Cotton House (currently offering a new “Stay for 7 Nights, Pay for 5 Nights” package May 1 through August 31, 2021) is the original Messel-designed building on the island. Besides the dining options—the Veranda and the Beach Café and Bar—the Great Room Bar is the hotel’s social gathering spot, especially for the weekly Mustique Company-hosted cocktail parties. Cocktail parties are a way of life in Mustique. In earlier years, residents even voiced their opposition to building a larger runway in place of the airstrip near the hotel, saying that besides the noise, putting lights on the runway would destroy cocktail hour. If the relaxed lifestyle is the heartbeat of Mustique, Basil’s Bar is the soul. The beachfront open-air pavilion is a cluster of hippy-fied bamboo huts with a recent Balinese-style updo by Philippe Starck. Potent cocktails, a Caribbean-influenced menu and live blues make for informal socializing. ARE WE THERE YET?
ARE WE THERE YET? Is it a new year? A global pandemic, raging wildfires, a murderous hornet invasion, a royal exit, a tumbling stock market, deep racial division, the death of one of America’s strongest women’s advocates whose best friend was a ferocious defender of the Constitution, a presidential election and the acceptance of athleisure wear for the now ubiquitous Zoom call meeting are just a few snapshots from the relentlessness of 2020. In the midst of such unyielding turmoil and chaos, we turned home. Home became ground zero: the place where we sleep, eat, socialize with immediate family, work, go to school and exercise. Initially we were in shock and groped our way through the gray days of winter. When spring popped, we responded with zeal to finally get outside—even if it only meant walking out to meet the delivery truck. We slogged through the humidity and haze of summer as we doggedly pushed on. When autumn arrived, the presidential election was as combustible 80
as the wildfires out West. But we trudged forward, ever determined to put this year, and its contents, behind us. As we exit this unprecedented year, we recognize the gifts of 2020: the realization that our health, our families, our friends and our homes are our lifelines. Every designer, architect and landscape architect with whom I’ve spoken is overloaded with projects ranging from the refreshing of primary homes to designing new vacation homes. Showrooms at ADAC are bustling with orders. Irrespective of whether one resides in a studio apartment or a grand estate, 2020 has defined the importance of loving one’s home. I believe in finding silver linings—even if those silver linings are as thin as a silk thread. While a silk thread is almost invisible, it’s five times stronger than steel. Here’s wishing all of you a happy holiday season, and may our silk threads weave us into an unbreakable and invincible 2021 filled with joy, health, and yes, newly designed homes.
