Leather from Eleanor Rigby combines a European design heritage with American luxury seating comfort and is manufactured honoring old world bench made techniques and values. At their core, these sofas and sectionals embody a passion for quality. This begins with searching the world’s leather tanneries for the finest hides as the foundation for seating that will stand the test of time and we hope become future family heirlooms in homes on every continent.

IT WAS A HOUSE WITH A SOUL well before Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles asked more than 15 design firms to put their signature stamp on the interiors of the annual Home for the Holidays Showhouse. A steep roof, large windows, cut-stone quoins and headers, a strong connection to a heavily canopied landscape—these were just a few elements specified by architecture firm Harrison Design, who created the new home to live well not just in the context of one of Atlanta’s most pedigreed neighborhoods, but also from the harmonious spaces that dwelled within. Of course, a number of challenges came along with achieving said harmony in such a short period of time—not the least of which included a steep driveway that provided many memorable exchanges during install week. But that’s all in a day’s work for these consummate professionals, whose remarkable designs are on view starting with page 59. These were rooms that beckoned relaxation, that begged for cocktails and conversation … and possibly even a little romance. Little luxuries lurked around every corner, whether it was a showstopping chandelier, tactile wallcovering or angelcanopy bed. To paraphrase participating designer Margaret Kirkland, it was a house that made visitors feel like a guest Elizabeth Ralls of honor. HOT LIST It’s only February, but already there’s enough activity in the local design community that deserves our attention, from fresh collections to industry behemoths planting prominent roots in our proverbial backyard.

Gallery Grandeur Stretching six stories above Buckhead and spanning nearly

70,000 square feet, RESTORATION HARDWARE’s RH ATLANTA, THE GALLERY AT THE ESTATE IN BUCKHEAD—which debuted to much fanfare in November—exhibits its full line of home furnishings on a scale unmatched by any other Atlanta retailer of its kind. Bearing more resemblance to a luxury hotel than a retail space, the new gallery proves an opulent counterpart to Buckhead Atlanta across the street. The result of a collaboration with architect James Gillam of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger, it’s details like a grand entry rotunda, double staircase, 50-foot reflecting pool, outdoor fireplace and rooftop conservatory—all delivered in perfect balance and symmetry—that complete the experience, which feels more like a showroom than retail model (most items may not be purchased off the floor). “This is a commercial building that has elements of a residential one. That juxtaposition is something that was very intentional,” says Restoration Hardware CEO Gary Friedman. “We do everything we can to make the space look more aesthetically pleasing

and organic: more trees, more green, more natural surfaces. The greenery creates oxygen. It just feels better,” he notes. “We try to not just build a building, but also to bring a sense of home and community onto a commercial street.” Mission, accomplished.

WHEN A PAIR OF NATIVE ATLANTANS found their way back South after several moves across the Northeast, they set out to make their newly purchased Buckhead house a home with the help of interior designers Carter Kay and Nancy Hooff. Before making any cosmetic changes, Kay suggested bringing architect Yong Pak on board to remedy the unflattering, builderplan layout. Pak completely overhauled the first floor and presented the homeowners with an open-concept living level primed for Kay’s deft touch. Although the kitchen, dining room and living room are now all open to one another, creative coffered ceiling configurations delineate each zone, creating intimate pockets within the larger space. However, Kay chose to paint the entire living level—millwork included—a single color for a sense of continuity. “Painting everything one color tied together the fairly distinctive areas. It also helps the space feel bigger,” she says. It’s special yet subtle details like these that infuse the revamped living level with personality. In the kitchen, the cabinet doors above the refrigeration unit follow the same division of the fridge and freezer for a unique look, while the countertop’s elegant custom edge provides an intriguing counterpoint to the casual Shaker-style cabinetry. In the living room, nothing was happenstance when it came to the furnishings—they were all part of Kay’s master plan. “We placed a beautiful but somewhat busy fabric in the foreground that leads you back to a lighter and airier seating area just in front of the windows, so you’re able to enjoy views of the lovely backyard without distraction,” she explains. But according to Kay, the singular element that makes this renovation such a standout is the one-of-a-kind Walker Zanger marble kitchen countertop. “Once we found that stone, we immediately knew what design direction we were going to take,” says Kay. “So my advice: Before getting ready to do a major renovation, find one thing that you just love and really make it be the star.”

Stan Topol’s all-time FAVORITE CHAIRS PRODUCED BY Elizabeth

Ralls

For Stan Topol, “chair” has become a verb. “I have always been intrigued by the form that a chair can take,” says the legendary Atlanta decorator. “The correct chair can and will make a room work. The wrong choice makes a room seem awkward.” Here, Topol presents seven chairs he has used—and will use over and over again, as he believes they not only boast perfect pitch and proportions but also make his clients feel comfortable. “These seven work beautifully and have for over 40 years in my little world of decorating,” he says.

«

REGENCY SABRELEG LOUNGE CHAIR FROM ROSE TARLOW. “Probably my most used chair. It has a great pitch and sits as if it was custom-designed for you. I have been so carried away with it that I even skirted it once to give the chair a different look from the four other Sabrelegs in the room. There are copies, but they

Some places create great stories. Others make history.

Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with refined cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. Exploring pristine trails on horseback — or the locally inspired menus of our restaurants and spa. At The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, not only is history at every turn. It’s always in the making. A VERSATILE ARTIST WITH ASTONISHING DEPTH, THIS ATHENS-BASED CREATIVE DEFIES DEFINITION. WRITTEN BY

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY BY Rinne Allen

FROM SET DESIGNS FOR THE METROPOLITAN OPERA to historically referenced custom commissions, the murals and paintings by Athens, Georgia, artist Jill Biskin range as much in subject and medium as they do in physical size. Biskin’s body of work from the past 30 years reveals a strength and versatility rarely achieved by artists who become mired in a single genre. “I like to change mediums because it frees me to think differently so that I never repeat myself, and that’s a challenge that I like,” says Biskin. The stark contrast between the artist’s contemporary, large-scale graphic installations for Atlanta designer Nancy Braithwaite and her medieval portraits and painted furniture is testimony to this mission. Classically trained at the Rhode Island School of Design, with further studies in New York, Florence and Rome, Biskin draws on both her education and her travels for inspiration. “I’ve cataloged both images and technical data from years of living in urban areas that are rooted with rich historical architecture,” says Biskin. In 2011 Biskin earned the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s Philip Trammell Shutze award for Artistic Craftsmanship for her ceiling murals at Bonar Hall, a 19th-century Georgian-

style house in Madison. Like her restoration work on a Menaboni mural and a Hockney-inspired pool for a Shutze home in Buckhead, the Bonar Hall project required months of working in situ. However, Biskin is accustomed to creating in seemingly unorthodox situations, painting from scaffolding, on the floor or teetering atop a ladder. When not working on-site, Biskin can be found in her Athens studio. After many years of renting workspace, she finally built her own to accommodate the range of her projects. The two-story structure permits the artist to tack a 28-foot mural to the floor, harnessing the light and space required for such a grand-scale project. Upstairs, a small office provides space where she can organize and prepare for upcoming projects. With her son attending college in the Northeast, Biskin now has ample time to spend in New York, where she finds inspiration. “I’ve had paintings warehoused in my mind and ideas percolating for years,” she says. For an artist who considers travel a working laboratory, Biskin’s next chapter promises exploration and innovation that will continue to inspire Atlanta’s design community. jillbiskin.com 26

MORE AT THE MART IT’S ONLY EXPECTED that a hotel attached to AMERICASMART and its designer showrooms must exude high design, which is why Jeffrey L. Portman, president and COO of AMC, parent company of AmericasMart, promises the new HOTEL INDIGO on 230 Peachtree will be entirely unique. “It’s going to have unbelievable finishes,” Portman says. “We sort of want the hotel to be aesthetically relevant to what our customer will find in our buildings in 2015 and beyond.” The 200-room hotel is expected to open in late 2015 as part of renovations to the office tower John Portman built in 1965 and reacquired in 2014. Naomi Von Habersham IT RECENTLY DAWNED ON ME THAT IF FURNITURE produced the year I was born is now being referred to as “vintage,” then I must be vintage, too! I can’t begin to imagine the shock I will feel if I live to be 100, because that’s when I officially become an antique. Being 100 years old is a scary thought, but perhaps I should take comfort in the fact that, like vintage and antique furniture, my chances of still being appreciated by the younger set will be pretty good. You see, not so long ago, I kept hearing people of my generation lament the fact that younger generations had no appreciation for old furniture. “Young people don’t understand antiques” and “They have no desire to collect old things” were refrains that I heard time and again. But I really think these pessimists were wrong, because I continue to see proof that young homeowners and their designers do understand and appreciate antique furniture. Take, for example, the success of last year’s Bunny Mellon sale at Sotheby’s, where her antique porcelain and furniture sold for amounts far beyond their presale estimates. Of course, the Bunny Mellon provenance certainly helped matters. Or how about last December’s Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse? Did you see how many designer rooms were decorated with both antiques and contemporary furniture? This “mix,” as the young like to call it, is transformative, giving antiques a youthful flair and contemporary pieces a sense of maturity. It’s also a very chic combination, and I think Home for the Holidays proved that. And finally, we have this month’s Cathedral Antiques Show, one of my favorite wintertime traditions. In years past, I’ve always noticed a bevy of young people attending the show, with some of them, yes, actually making purchases. In fact, one of the show’s most popular events is the Drinks & Antiques party, which caters to those young, budding collectors. If you ask me, it’s further proof that the future looks bright for antiques. Suddenly, everything old seems new again.

Jean Louis Sangare AFTER MORE THAN 15 YEARS at French bistro Le Bilboquet’s original New York location, chef de cuisine Jean Louis Sangare is sharing his culinary talents with Atlanta. “There’s a city of people here who are very interested in French culture,” he says. “I asked to come to Atlanta because I wanted to offer its residents and visitors a true experience of French cooking and Parisian café culture.” Sangare has followed through with this mission by infusing the city with French flavors at Le Bilboquet’s new Buckhead Atlanta outpost. Opened in November, the bistro offers traditional dishes such as tuna tartare, crispy pomme frites, Cajun chicken and crème brûlée, as well as a selection of house-made sauces. But it’s not just Le Bilboquet’s tried-and-true 34

menu that provides Atlantans with a sampling of the French lifestyle; the eatery’s atmosphere and customer service are also quintessentially Parisian. French music greets guests as soon as they set foot inside the illuminated space, which—conceptualized with South France in mind—boasts tall windows, velvet banquettes, fresh flowers and terrazzo floors, as well as outdoor seating ideal for an evening summertime meal. Even those unfamiliar with French cuisine will feel at home, as servers remain on hand to advise diners on which dishes might best suit their palates. “I want to give people something that they’ve never had before,” Sangare says. “We’re going to make Atlanta a place where you don’t have to travel to eat good food.” lebilboquetatlanta.com

BETH WEBB, Black-lacquer walls and a masterfully detailed tracery ceiling motif provided a dazzling backdrop in the dining room that allowed for sculptural splashes of cream, taupe, brass and goldleaf to positively pop. “The design really began with the angular console and serpent lamp,” notes Webb of these seductively chic objects, both of which were recent debuts from the newly launched Areté Collection by Bradley Clifford and George Sellers. Webb selected the graphic works of art from Robert Brown’s Townhouse and Bungalow Classic (source of the graphic piece by Susan Hable Smith)—while the undulating cecropia-leaf centerpiece by floral designer Robert Long echoed their striking effects. Cleverly introduced layers, including an array of hides placed above a flat-weave Turkish rug from Moattar, contributed to the stylish sense of intrigue.

SUSAN FERRIER, mcalpine booth & ferrier interiors “I really wanted to keep [the living room] pretty, happy and light,” says Ferrier, who admits she was actively designing against the prevailing fashion of dark and moody rooms. Never one to neglect scale, she employed elongated and elevated pieces (from the floor lamps to the Ochre chandelier) for a sense of majesty. Flanking a wall of soft drapery was the room’s showstopper: a floor-to-ceiling mirrored screen that added luminosity while enhancing the room’s soaring architecture. Similarly, the space’s reflective and metallic fabrics appeared particularly beautiful in candlelight. “I tried to keep it very elemental with metals and stone,” says Ferrier, who specifically selected unique decor—a vintage telescope, a pair of binoculars on a stand, rock crystals, a bronze sculpture of a hand—to up the intrigue. Warm, pure gold was used as a color, rather than tone, resulting in a serene look alongside the room’s wooly grays and softly curved upholstery.

AMY D. MORRIS, amy morris interiors Always keen to embrace a fresh style, Morris fashioned an inviting family room using Jim Thompson textiles as her guide. After turning the drapery fabric for the French doors on the reverse, she selected a saturated navy mohair for the custom tuxedo sofa, which, along with a pair of armchairs flanking the fireplace, formed a convivial seating group. “I imagined a family congregating here,” the designer explains. “It’s so important, even in big houses, to have small spaces to gather, so you don’t lose the sense of daily routine.” Though hearty in scale, her choice for lighting nevertheless conveyed a light footprint, the lantern’s gilded iron bands mirroring the room’s leggy selections, including an unusually shaped coffee table from R Hughes. Anchoring the space—and its wide doorway—were two towering red chinoiserie cabinets from Joseph Konrad, which also served as a frame for Beth Webb’s black-and-white dining room across the way. 43

NIKI PAPADOPOULOS & MARK WILLIAMS, Truly the heart of this home, the kitchen was likewise a heartfelt collaboration among three expert Atlanta firms: Harrison Design Associates, Bell Custom Cabinetry and Mark Williams Design Associates—who combined varied design notions to achieve the most attractive and efficient kitchen possible. The architectural foundation was the preeminent force of inspiration, its open layout necessitating a simple approach that blended beautifully with surrounding rooms. To soften the utilitarian features, the refrigerator and freezer were concealed in polished mahogany, giving them the appearance of an oversize armoire, while custom panels dressed up cabinet doors and an ample pantry ingeniously concealed clutter as well as appliances such as warming drawers and a built-in microwave. “It has the tailored and nonfussy sensibility our firm is known for,” explains Papadopoulos, who worked with Williams in the adjacent breakfast room to select a mahogany dining table from Baker for perfect balance, while an Ochre chandelier stole the show from above. 45

LIZ WILLIAMS, liz williams interiors Taking a handsome and slightly formal approach to the home’s entry halls and stairwell, Liz Williams chose a classic Lee Jofa fabric—Folie Chinoise—as her launching point, allowing the traditional pattern to offset more contemporary artwork (note Carrie Penley’s dramatic horse painting and Brian Carter’s bold abstracts) that, along with antique furnishings and rugs, established an overall transitional vibe. Williams ingeniously combined several of these old rugs into one makeshift runner, underscoring the room’s multitasking nature. “This house is open and ideal for entertaining, and with an entry so considerable in size, the space must be utilized,” explains the designer, who outfitted its vast proportions with stylish but functional furnishings: The entry hallway accommodated extra seating via a 19th-century Italian settee, while a writing desk presided over a sunny alcove upstairs. 48

MICHEL BOYD, smithboyd interiors Michel Boyd’s take on the black-and-white palette was as artful as it was fashion-forward. Modern artwork, bold silhouettes and precise tailoring created a master bedroom that was equal parts stimulating and intimate. “I believe that a bedroom should not just be soothing, but sexy, too,” the designer asserts. Textural touches punctuated a mélange of must-sees, moving from the moody upstairs gallery hall to the statement-making master bedroom, bath and sitting room: a custom ruched bed, a brass desk, color-blocked draperies, an octopus chest and a Brutalist wall sculpture, as well as deft layering of classic yet graphic patterns. The geometric Osborne & Little wallpaper was a showstopper, and complemented the handsome Harrison Design Associates–selected hardware on the doors. “The piece above the mantel is my favorite,” Boyd says of the Cubist figure from Pryor Gallery, which crowned a fireplace in the sitting area filled with 200 black books. 51

MARGARET KIRKLAND, This upstairs guest retreat was a sight for sore eyes, thanks to Kirkland’s penchant for sumptuous fabrics and ornate details. Glossy walls in a deep Farrow & Ball blue, paired with modern paintings, added punch to this otherwise traditional room. The palette itself was determined by the Brunschwig & Fils fabric, Bellary, which combined blue, green and turquoise. This color scheme was extended to the angel canopy, window valances and bed skirt, and the result was nothing short of jaw-dropping. “We wanted to create an inviting and charming retreat that really made people feel like guests of honor when visiting the house,” says Kirkland, who believes in “the power of pretty”—hence little luxuries such as a dressing table set with flowers, perfume, truffles and an array of books. 56

TAMI RAMSAY & KRISTA NYE SCHWARTZ, cloth & kind For this home’s far-removed bonus room and vestibule, Athens-based Tami Ramsay and Ann Arbor-based Krista Nye Schwartz fashioned a space that was inky, soulful and awash in moody luxury. “Since it was essentially the last room in the house, we wanted it to be a destination,” says Ramsay, who approached the design with a story in mind. “We loved the idea of treating it as a speakeasy, off the beaten track and accessed through the vestibule.” Their intimate entertaining space was enveloped in Sydney Harbour Paint Company’s Jaguar, then stocked with well-set conversation groups and a slew of fabrics, most of them from Zak + Fox. “We’re textile fanatics,” says Schwartz. “This room was our dream come true, since we got to pile them on.” Trims from Fringe Market, accents from Peter Fasano and a daybed covered in an Ellisha Alexina stripe completed the look with pizzazz.

CARTER KAY, Tucked away and located at the termination point of a long upstairs hallway, Carter Kay and Nancy Hooff’s guest retreat delivered an instant vacation. The designers adopted a patchwork-like fabric as the impetus for the design, its elegant layers of linen, silk, leather and metallic details draped from copper rods, unifying the room’s bank of windows. To echo its earthy color palette, the duo was quick to bring the outdoors in via antler details, hoof-legged furniture and even a hornet’s nest gathered during a walk in Highlands, North Carolina. “It’s a melting pot of a room,” says Kay, who mixed an 18th-century French vitrine, a dramatic custom headboard and midcentury lamps with contemporary accents—such as the mirrored console-cum-desk paired with a hair-on-hide bench. It’s easy to imagine curling up in this room on a rainy Saturday, reading and snoozing the hours away. 60

BARBARA HEATH, Noting the multitude of bedrooms in this generous house, The Mercantile proprietress Barbara Heath and her all-female design team took an ultra-fresh approach upstairs, creating a “ladies’ lounge” that illustrated how to repurpose an accounted-for space according to entirely new activities. In this case, the homeowner might steal away for part of the day to “write thank-you notes, read a book or perhaps peruse favorite issues of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles,” Heath explains. Though small, the room was packed with soft seating, making it an ideal space for a group of girlfriends to gather, enjoying martinis and manicures well into the evening. Prim and plush, the palette of pink, white, gray and crystal exuded glamour with everything from Murano glass lamps to sheepskin-topped Lucite stools, merging classical and whimsical concepts. A silvery Jim Thompson wallpaper in the bath was simply the icing on this pretty little cake.

DANIELLE ROLLINS & BILL INGRAM, bill ingram architect / rollins ingram Atlanta tastemaker Danielle Rollins and Birmingham and Atlanta architect Bill Ingram hit the ground running with one of the first ventures of their newly formed partnership. “We wanted it to feel like a Southern gentleman’s room,” Rollins says. “I imagined someone who is very knowledgeable about antiques … he has a collector’s eye, and also a connection to a Southern colonial past.” Using cocooning shades of brown, orange and forest green, with a russet red and gold-rubbed shagreen wallpaper adorning Harrison Design Associates’ beamed ceiling, the pair created a stately study where the art took center stage. Every piece—from the botanicals to the oversize abstract canvas—was created by the same artist, Virginia-based John Matthew Moore. A well-stocked bar, plenty of Ralph Lauren tartans, warm-wood antiques and leather-adorned tables kept the effect dignified and genteel. 64

DEBBIE WEITZ, ELEANOR ROPER AND KENT DROTOR, b.d. jeffries Bedecked in primitive elements, the first-floor bar, vestibule and powder room by B.D. Jeffries reflected the same rustic yet luxe aesthetic that’s proved so popular at the Buckhead mainstay. “I wanted to go with understated elegance, clean lines, and objects of scale and intention in this sacred place,” says shop co-owner Debbie Weitz. The warm woods chosen by Harrison Design Associates helped drive the neutral gray-green of the walls, while a bell-shaped, mirrored-glass ceiling fixture was influenced by the room’s understated hardware. Earthy and genteel accents included horn bar stools from Argentina, loads of William Yeoward crystal, a Roman shade in a graphic Zak + Fox pattern and antique bar stools picked up at a Paris flea market. A teak root table in the hallway commanded attention while drawing the eye to a serene landscape painting, with mossy accents to complement. 66

LANCE JACKSON AND DAVID ECTON, Atlanta’s mild climate naturally lends itself to elegant verandas, which is just what Lance Jackson and David Ecton of Parker Kennedy Living had in mind when they applied their signature Palm Beach flair to the home’s covered veranda. Reaching for blue-and-white porcelains, classic wicker and custom faux-bamboo seating, the pair crafted a fabulously understated palette that opposed their typical aesthetic. “We stayed away from the super-bold jolts of color,” Jackson explains. The effect was indeed pleasing in its subtlety, while multiple seating groups—from club chairs by the fire to keep warm on cool nights to a spacious dining area ideal for overflow during cocktail parties or a summer evening meal—made the space entertaining-friendly. The mantel, anchored by a white-lacquered chinoiserie mirror, would remain a focal point throughout every season. 69

BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN, Defining the term “unexpected,” Brian Patrick Flynn’s four interconnected spaces offered an alluring snapshot of his current design perspective—gradually skewing more transitional in recent seasons. The always spunky Renaissance man took an ultra-memorable approach with his first Atlanta showhouse, committed to creating moments of pause en route to the other showhouse rooms. In the hall, a collection of paintings from Mark Boomershine and Marietta’s dk Gallery mingled with an array of vintage works culled from Bjork Studio and “innocent yet edgy” portraits by photographer Sarah Dorio. The laundry combined a textural greige grasscloth with hardworking soapstone, modern conveniences and an enormous iron orb fixture from Currey & Company, while the powder room walls were upholstered in Duralee’s winsome Tilton Fenwick peacock print. 71

Mirror, Mirror

MARCIA CALLS UPON ONE OF HER FAVORITE ANTIQUES T0 ANCHOR THE LIVING ROOM OF HER NEWLY MINTED NEW ORLEANS PIED-À-TERRE.

PACKING UP FURNITURE to go in my New Orleans apartment had me in a state of total confusion. Where would I keep my prized convex mirror? My daughter has often remarked that I am the only woman she knows who does not own a proper mirror. Whenever I suggest that she take a look into my convex mirror to second-guess one of her lessthan-appropriate outfits, she howls, “That’s why you think you look good—you only ever 80

use that awful mirror to check your makeup!” I wisely choose to ignore this (I won’t be parting with my heavy eye makeup anytime soon). But the mirror: to go or to stay? It is a lovely Federal style with an eagle surmount. I decide to pack it; I am, after all, going for the Hollywood Glam look in my New Orleans abode. Some might wonder, Will a Federal-style convex mirror actually go with 12-foot-long 19th-century gilded settees and

white-painted faux bamboo furniture covered in orange, lime-green and pink upholstery? Yes and yes; convex mirrors go with everything, and that’s why we Atlanta gals never leave home without ’em. They may be enjoying a renaissance in the design world— even Restoration Hardware and Jonathan Adler are making them—but convex mirrors have always hled a certain allure. They look perfect in a picture grouping, above another mirror

or even, as I have done, on top of a coromandel screen. The convex mirror is part of our collective past. (Didn’t Dorothy Draper hang them at The Greenbrier? Is The Greenbrier ever wrong? No, and neither was Draper.) My grandparents owned several, and I am proud to carry on the tradition. So what if I accidentally wore two different shoes yesterday? They were both black with bows, and in my convex mirror they looked like perfection.

WELCOME From the Dean Grace to you and peace!

On behalf of the people of the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, I also welcome you to this vibrant church community. The Cathedral of St. Philip was established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta. We moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1932, and have grown tremendously since then. The Cathedral Antiques Show began as a small and seasonal fund-raiser organized by our parish Episcopal Church Women. Their work—and ministry—now requires a year-round commitment and has donated more than 4 million dollars to charitable organizations. Obviously, we delight in the antiques presented here, in a show considered one of the finest in the Southeast. But this effort involves so much more than antiques!

Welcome to the 44th annual Cathedral Antiques Show! In 1969, the Episcopal Church Women of the Cathedral of St. Philip embarked upon a fundraising effort by inviting a group of antiques dealers to display their merchandise at a booth price of $25. The price of an admission ticket was $1.50! Although originally started to help with the Cathedral’s building program, for the past 30 years, 100% of the proceeds of the Show has gone to a local charitable organization that is positively affecting difficult issues in our community. Since its inception, the Show has grown in size, and the breadth and quality of its dealers has risen to include more than two dozen dealers who specialize in high-end furniture, porcelains, rugs, fine art, silver, jewelry, and much more. In 1999, the Show added a Tour of Homes that has become one of its shining stars. In 2011, the Inspiration House was added to showcase the talents of the local design community. Last year, that concept was changed to Inspiration Avenue, located on the second floor of the Cathedral, and it continues to delight and inspire our visitors. Also new last year was a mini Flower Festival, which has grown into a flower show with eight church flower guilds decorating the sacred spaces of the Cathedral and twelve garden clubs providing exquisite floral displays throughout the Show. The Show also has broadened its offerings to appeal to our younger audience. The First Place Passion Tour was started to provide a peek into the homes of first-time owners in an in-town neighborhood, and our Friday night party was designed to attract young collectors. This year, we are dedicating Saturday to “Antiques 101,” a series of programs developed to inspire a new generation of antiques connoisseurs.

This is a powerful ministry of outreach. The proceeds this year are designated for Covenant House Georgia, a residential crisis shelter that serves Atlanta’s homeless and abandoned youth ages 18-21. Its mission is to provide loving care and a safe place to live for vulnerable youth while acquiring the skills they need for a more hopeful future. There are quite a few reasons why young people could end up living on the streets and Covenant House has helped thousands to rebuild their lives, many of whom have been trafficked, abused, and exploited.

Over time, the Show has been enriched with presentations by well-known tastemakers from the antiques and design communities that entertain our guests and often include signings of their beautiful books. This year, we are fortunate to have an award winning interior designer from California, a nationally known local architect, and other engaging speakers who will share their ideas on gracious decorating and entertaining.

I thank this year’s Co-Chairs, Katherine Hill and Grace Foster, for doing an outstanding job. They have organized hundreds of volunteers in creating this weeklong event. Furthermore, I salute Susan and Frank Troutman for serving as Honorary Chairs of the Antiques Show. I am proud to recognize Susan and Frank as friends, and they represent Cathedral faithfulness and generosity at its best! I also thank each of you for visiting the Cathedral today, and I invite you to return for other occasions of service and prayer. We are open daily, and this is truly a house of prayer for all people. Your presence helps us fulfill that mission of openness and hospitality!

Thank you for coming and we hope you enjoy the Show!

May God bless you always,

The Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler Dean of the Cathedral

We hope you will take advantage of all these offerings that make up what has truly become a festival of the decorative arts. Your presence here will help us raise money for this year’s beneficiary, Covenant House Georgia, and enable it to further help abused, homeless, and trafficked youth in the Atlanta community.

2015 HONORARY CHAIRMEN

Susan and Frank Troutman A church home is the setting for many of life’s most poignant moments. For Susan and Frank Troutman, this rings especially true. The Troutmans recently watched their daughter-in-law walk down the aisle at the Cathedral of Saint Philip to start a new life with their son, Fielding. The marriage marked the latest chapter in a story at the Cathedral that spans Frank’s entire life and Susan’s past 32 years. Though a native Atlantan, Susan grew up in Augusta and graduated from Augusta College School of Nursing. Frank spent his childhood in Atlanta, acolyting at the Cathedral, and he graduated from the University of Georgia and its law school. Instead of practicing law, he ran a family food business for 25 years in Augusta where he was active in the local community and served as Senior Warden at St. Paul’s Church. Frank and Susan married in 1982, moved back to Atlanta the following year, and became active at the Cathedral. They have shared their faith with their son, Frank’s four children from his first marriage, and six grandchildren. At the Cathedral, Frank has served on the Chapter twice, as well as on various Stewardship and Finance Committees and the Antiques Show Sponsor Committee. Susan has worked on the Antiques Show, taught Sunday School, and been involved with St. Anne’s Guild, Altar Guild, the Cathedral Towers Board, and Stewardship Committees. She also helped found the Cathedral Golf Tournament. Susan has contributed her talents to the Junior League and the Shepherd Center, among many others, and Frank has been involved with the Cherokee Garden Library, the Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy, and the Southeastern Horticultural Society. He has also given time to the Episcopal Media Center Board and the Georgia Council for Economic Education.

Details Make the Difference

Through their devoted service, the Troutmans have written many happy chapters in their story as Cathedral members. Even as Frank continues to be busy as a management consultant and Susan as a registered nurse, they make time to celebrate their life at the Cathedral. Through their love of the liturgy, the priests, the church and its grounds, and their Cathedral friends, the Troutmans continue to add to their lifelong story of beloved community. We are proud to recognize Frank and Susan Troutman, cherished members of the Cathedral, as Honorary Chairs of the 2015 Cathedral Antiques Show.

2015 BENEFICIARY

The Cathedral Antiques Show raises funds through event ticket sales and donations by patrons and corporate sponsors. All of each Show’s proceeds are donated to a local charity. This year’s beneficiary is Covenant House Georgia.

Covenant House Georgia The opening of the first Covenant House door coincided with the opening of its first heart. One night, during a snowstorm in 1969 in New York City, a simple Franciscan priest was moved to welcome several homeless youth in from the cold. This moment established the roots for our mission to serve the suffering children of the street with absolute respect and unconditional love. Over the last forty years, Covenant House has grown from a single-apartment unit to an international authority on the issues surrounding homeless youth. In that time our mission has not changed, nor has our commitment to serving homeless youth. Today, Covenant House opens doors of opportunity and hope to homeless youth across the US, Canada and Latin America, including right here in the Atlanta community. In 2000, Covenant House Georgia opened its doors to provide shelter and services to Atlanta’s homeless and trafficked youth. We started from humble beginnings and today we are the state’s largest crisis shelter serving 18 to 21 year olds who have no place to call home. To break the cycle of chronic adult homelessness and bridge the gap of support in the lives of our youth, Covenant House has developed three core services known as our Continuum of Care: Street Outreach, Crisis Care and Rights of Passage (independent living). These core services are comprised of a wide array of in-house programs, including healthcare, educational support, job readiness and skills training, drug abuse treatment and prevention, mental health services and life skills training. These programs are designed to provide our youth with a holistic approach to leaving the streets and achieving independence. Most importantly, our programs are all implemented with our mission to provide absolute respect and unconditional love. Executive Director, Allison Ashe says of the homeless and trafficked youth at Covenant House Georgia, “We can’t change the past for them but we can give them the skills and belief in themselves that they can change their future.” Last year, Covenant House Georgia served 1143 homeless and trafficked youth. This year, Covenant House Georgia is positioned to reach even more youth who are living on the streets and struggling to survive. “We are honored to be the beneficiary of the Cathedral Antiques Show and we’re grateful for the compassion and generosity of the Show’s patrons and sponsors. This opportunity will allow Covenant House Georgia to open a Community Service Center that will help us reach and serve even more youth in need,” beams Ashe.

Covenant House Georgia is located at 1559 Johnson Road, Atlanta, GA 30318. For more information or to find volunteer opportunities, visit www.covenanthouseGA.org or call 404.589.0163. Polo Lane

Andrews Drive

Tim Adams of TS Adams Design Studio recently designed this shingle style country house with a slate roof for a family who had long admired the property. They wanted the house to resemble those on Virginia horse farms and also wanted to maximize the beautiful view of the land. Because the owners wanted the feel of a “new old house,” Tim employed reclaimed wood throughout the home. The house also needed to suit the needs of this blended family of seven (five children ranging from 5-25 years old at the time of move-in), so he also included something for everyone in the family. They love to entertain family and friends, and the house serves that purpose beautifully. When it came time to decorate their new house the couple called on Mary McWilliams of Mary Mac & Company. Together the couple and the designer created a color scheme of soft creams, taupes, blues, and pale greens and also incorporated antiques from the husband’s family. The house is a comfortable blend of beauty and functionality for this busy family. The homeowners enjoy sitting outdoors on the terrace or the screened porch watching horses and enjoying the views of nature. They love their new residence and call it “a little slice of country life right in the heart of Vinings.”

Harvard educated architect Sigmund Nesselroth designed this grand stone estate in 1929 for the president of Georgia Power. Its stunning site is just down the street from the Swan house. In a similar way to the Swan house, the house sits up on a hill with beautiful steps sweeping down the front lawn. The driveway leads around the house to the entrance, which is located in the stone motor court at the rear. The original granite for the façade was reclaimed from First Baptist Church on Peachtree. Beautiful wrought leaded glass windows and a Vermont slate roof complete the look. Keith Summerour was the architect for a two part renovation of the house in 2000 and 2004. The second renovation added a new wing to the right of the house and included a new kitchen and stone porch, a Pilates studio, an art studio, and an attached garage. Granite was found to match the existing stone and the process took two years to complete because the stone was cut by hand. Summerour says: “Our goal was to make the old and the new nearly impossible to distinguish, while still incorporating the updates the homeowners wanted. As you walk around this house, I think you will see that vision was accomplished.” The current homeowners hired the design firm Southern Ridge to redecorate the house for their family. Wendy Wells and Paige Lee have showcased the owners’ priceless art collection while making the home warm and approachable.

The owners of this charming shingle-style country house wanted to create a warm sanctuary for their extended family. They called on Norman Askins and Tammy Connor to make that vision a reality. The house was originally built in 1998 and was renovated in 2006. The whole house renovation involved changing all of the moldings, adding a sunroom and reworking the entrance hall completely to make it more intimate. Tammy Connor’s interior design work is well-known in the south, and the owners admired houses she decorated. Tammy’s deft use of a soft color palette of blue-greens, soft ivories, tans, browns and grays creates the soothing environment the owners desired. She was able to use all of their furniture from a previous house on Tuxedo Road and add antiques and lighting from sources in Charleston, New Orleans, Birmingham and New York. Connor describes the house as ““soft and comfortable, yet sophisticated.” Perfect execution of the couples’ vision for their home. This New York-style brownstone townhouse was built in 2006 by the Bentley Group, Ltd. Harrison and Associates designed the handsome townhouses along with another set next door. Interior decorator Judy Bentley and her husband built several other houses together and they knew exactly what they wanted – a more compact style of living that sacrificed none of the beauty and flow of their former residences. The architectural details give it the feel of an old house. Of particular interest is the elaborate stairwell that is a nod to a Bentley family house in Charleston on the Battery. The staircase curves up four stories under a skylight. Judy, whose design business is called Interior Views, decorated the house in her style which she describes as traditional with a large dose of fun. She says: “In terms of style I like tradition but I like for it to have a little twist – even if you do that with accessories or fabrics or a piece of furniture that’s unexpected.” She is a master of color and pattern, texture and trim, and there are many antiques mixed with Chinoisserie wallpaper and gorgeous fabrics. Judy has a passion for Chinoisserie, and there are touches of it in every room. The terrace at the rear of the house feels like a European garden, with lush greenery and fountains. One would never know from the peaceful setting that Piedmont and Habersham roads are only a short distance away. This is elegant, urban living at its best!

Committed to Our Clients, Committed to our Community: Kilpatrick Townsend is Proud to Support the 2015 Cathedral Antiques Show and Covenant House Georgia Originally sited on 100 acres adjacent to West Paces Ferry Road, this historic Italianate estate—modeled on two Italian villas, Villa Allegri Arvedi and Villa Gori—was designed by Hentz Reed and Adler and built in 1923 for the Calhoun family. Neil Reed was the original architect on the project, also known as “Trygveson,” “the pink palace” and “the pink castle.” Philip Shutze was a junior architect on the project and contributed much of the Italian inspiration for the house. Neil Reed travelled to Europe with the Calhouns to purchase much of the furniture for the house. The house stayed in the Calhoun family until 1958, when its owners, Roby and Louise Calhoun Robinson, sold the it to the Thornwell family, who lived there for more than 50 years. When the house was sold to the Thornwells it only included 3-4 acres of land, the rest of the land was sold to developers Gene and Jerry Cates who developed Pinestream and Pinemeadow Roads. This magnificent house was recently purchased by Melanie Turner and Stan Benecki, who are updating the home while preserving its character and history. Turner and Benecki hope to bring the house back to life as a family home and to open the house to the arts and philanthropy communities.

This whimsical bungalow welcomes guests with its red brick and inviting double doors. The cheerful theme of the home’s exterior continues into the children’s room where a spirited blue color palette is complimented by pops of yellow and gold. Here, traditional animal prints and unique pieces bridge the gap between playful and chic.

A long stone path bordered by a boxwood hedge leads to the front door of this traditional home. The interior, decorated in eye-catching jewel tones with creative artwork and timeless furnishings, creates an inviting and comfortable space for a young family. The traditional boxwood design continues in the backyard with plantings wrapped around a pebble stone path.

Meredith Drive

Spring Valley Road

Inspired by the sandy shores of Palm Beach and impulsive moments while antiquing, this adorable one-story bungalow is full of character and carefully made choices. With an owner who clearly appreciates collecting the right pieces, everything is placed to use space to its fullest. All of the rooms display just enough symmetry to feel cozy, while the slight stylistic differences bring everything together.

Sited upon a hill, this Craftsmanstyle house oozes sophistication from the inside out. With its new take on Southern charm, the delightful front porch is the perfect place to lounge. The naturally lit formal living room is brought to life by strong shapes, patterns and pieces. In the bedroom, a soft rose glow creates an aura of peaceful serenity and successfully exemplifies the strength of simplicity.

Walthall Drive This fabulous home rests happily on a gently sloping hill easing guests into its design genius through a flawlessly landscaped lawn. The interior is a brilliant illustration of black and white design done right. Hidden pops of color throughout each room deliberately bring the space to life. Painted walls and patterned ceilings reflect a homeowner who has a flare for fashion and isn’t afraid to take risks.

ALEXA HAMPTON | MARCUS SHERIDAN | BUNNY WILLIAMS | BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN

Under owner and designer ALEXA HAMPTON’s direction, the world famous firm Mark Hampton LLC has completed a wide range of designs for domestic and international projects, from New York City to Hangzhou, China, including apartments and large residences, private airplanes and yachts. A perennial member of Architectural Digest’s AD100 and House Beautiful’s Top Designer list as well as a member of Elle Décor’s A-list, Hampton’s work is classic, traditional and eclectic. Her involvement in design goes far past her position as President and featured designer of Mark Hampton LLC; she is on the board of trustees for the New York School of Interior Design, the New York Landmarks Conservancy and the Institute for Classical Architecture. She was one of the three inaugural designers who launched Gilt Groupe’s Gilt Home Design Boutiques, serves on the design board of MyDeco.com and was the only ever female cast member of “This Old House” and was a co-host of PBS’ “Find.” Over the years, Hampton’s work has been featured in many national and regional shelter and design magazines. In recent years, Hampton received an honorary PhD from Moore College of Art and Design, was awarded Cosmopolitan’s Fun Fearless Female Award, Connecticut Cottage & Gardens’ Design Innovator Award and the Hyland Award for Interior Design. She was also the first woman to receive the Design Icon Award at the World Market Center.

MARCUS SHERIDAN is the founder of The Sales Lion, one of the internet’s fastest growing marketing websites focusing on the transformational powers of inbound marketing on small businesses. But before spreading the good word about marketing, Sheridan, who also owns a prominent swimming pool company, established the most popular swimming pool website in the world through content marketing. Known for his contagious enthusiasm and boundless energy when on stage, Sheridan has since become a popular speaker and has been called the ‘Gary Vaynerchuk of the Swimming Pool Industry.’

BUNNY WILLIAMS is a designer with a modern vision, a sense of history, and the confidence to take the unexpected path. Both a trailblazer and a tastemaker, Williams’ style is classic, but never predictable. A native of Charlottesville, VA, Williams began her career at Stair & Co., the prestigious English antiques dealer, followed by 22 years with the venerable firm, Parish-Hadley Associates. She formed her own firm, Bunny Williams Inc. in 1988. Today she not only runs her design firm, but with her husband John Rosselli, owns Treillage Ltd., two shops selling garden objects, antiques, and decorative accessories, based in New York City. In 2008 she introduced a celebrated home furnishings collection, BeeLine Home, which continues to expand and introduce new pieces at the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, NC. Williams’ fourth book, “Scrapbook for Living” was published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang in November 2010.

BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN is an American television producer turned interior designer. After years writing, producing and directing news programs and home improvement shows, Flynn tried his own hand at residential interiors, quickly earning the respect of his peers and shelter magazine editors. Brian combined his design and decorating skills with his television production experience to create FlynnsideOut Productions, a full service production company specializing in lifestyle-related content. In addition to serving as Founder, Brian also serves as Executive Producer, Set Designer, Writer and Prop Stylist for his projects. Brian is also a contributor and featured designer with HGTV.com.

TONY PEREZ is the CEO and Co-Founder of Sucuri, Inc. He believes that usability and website aesthetics should be built on a strong foundation of secure design. Tony has invested the better part of 5 years analyzing and assessing the state of security within the realm of websites. He travels the world engaging website owners and developers in an effort to build a bridge between traditional Information Security processes and those that end-users should employ. BRETT VANKOSKI is Vice President and Co-Founder, Latitude Beverage Co., Ninety+ Cellars. Sitting in his cubicle one day in 2007, Brett realized that all he could expect to measurably accomplish in another decade of corporate confinement was a few more totally awesome PowerPoint presentations. Not satisfied with this vision of the future, he left the corporate world to pursue his MBA. Brett’s Masters in Beverage Appreciation consisted of compiling a small wine collection in his son’s closet; arguing that dry rose is a great choice for beer drinkers; and discovering that not everyone likes the wines he likes no matter how crazy good they are. Impressed by his bodacious wine skills, in 2009 Kevin asked Brett to help him to launch 90+ Cellars. Since then, he spends most of his days, evenings and weekends tasting, selecting, selling and promoting the wines of 90+ Cellars.

THE SECRET TO GREAT COOKIES IS NOT

WHAT YOU MAKE THEM WITH. I T ’ S

W H O .

The comforting sound of steady rain mingles with the laughter of children at play, cozy and dry on a gloomy afternoon. You check the oven timer...one minute left; the scent of fresh-baked cookies will soon draw them into the kitchen. “Better grab a few napkins”, you say to yourself, pausing just long enough to revise your projection: “Better grab a ton of napkins.” As if tied by the invisible bonds of chocolate-chip love, the group suddenly bursts onto the scene, a blur of darting hands, melting chocolate, smeary fingers and gooey grins. It’s an infectious moment, and you can’t help but smile to yourself and observe: “Gloomy afternoon, indeed.”
