GRAND OPENING AT THE DUMP
NOW THERE’S A PLACE FOR HIGH DESIGN WITHOUT HIGH MARKUP.
A place where vintage home furnishings and unique handmade designs come direct to The District, without the overhead and prices of high-rent stores and enormous catalogs. Eco-friendly, reclaimed woods. Same quality. Same makers. One half to one third of established prices. Now there’s a place where design has value. Welcome to The District.
THE GREENWICH SOLID ACACIA DINING TABLE Acacia is nature’s remarkably durable hardwood. Our artisan first selects each 4-inch plank of acacia by hand, then allows it to age a full 120 days to enhance its character and solidity. It is his hands who craft, sand, inlay and finish each unique table, creating a piece of singular beauty, unlike any other table in the world. 94 inches long.

OUR FEBRUARY ISSUE OFFERS A GLIMPSE into the current state of Atlanta design. Of course, it’s always been our purview to highlight the city’s top-tier designers who are making waves both here and across the country, but this issue also shines the spotlight on esteemed design and manufacturing firms who currently have a laser-like focus on Atlanta and its coveted position as the next big thing. In our annual Hot List (page 12), we’re granted a first look at a fresh collaboration between renowned French handcrafted range manufacturer La Cornue and Atlanta designers Suzanne Kasler and Matthew Quinn. We also garnered a one-time, all-access pass to Himitsu, the ultra-exclusive Tokyo-style cocktail concept created by famed British designer Tom Dixon, who enlisted local artisans to craft the moody interiors of this dramatic Buckhead space. And, finally, with our post-event coverage of the 2015 Home for the Holidays Showhouse (page 65), we feature an in-depth look at cuttingedge architecture, interior design, custom cabinetry and a host of other highly specialized trades that never fail to awe with superior workmanship. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work so intimately with such extraordinary design talents, even if it did come along with a few frazzled, gray hairs. It’s a sacrifice we’re willing to make, so that we might showcase only the best of the best our ever-expanding and mighty design community has to offer. HOT LIST It’s only February, but already the local design community is poised to take 2016 by storm thanks to fresh collaborations with industry behemoths and a renewed interest in Atlanta as the epicenter of Southern style.
Hidden Jewel WINDOWLESS AND ONLY ACCESSIBLE VIA PASSCODE OR iris scanner, Umi’s new Japanese cocktail lounge appropriately takes the name HIMITSU, or “secret.” The speakeasy-style format came to fruition at the hands of an all-star team, including co-owners Farshid Arshid and Charlie Hendon, executive chef and co-owner Fuyuhiko Ito, creative director Shingo Gokan, director T. Fable Jeon and British designer Tom Dixon of Design Research Studio. Boasting 30 different surfaces—including blackened and fumed white oak floors and ceilings, an all-copper bar and Verde marble table tops—Himitsu marks DRS’s debut U.S. project. Meticulously orchestrated design elements, based around a rich, inky Todd Murphy painting, are the ultimate in luxury. Deep teal banquettes built by Björk Studio stand out against the black interior, as do Dixon’s translucent copper MALT lightHIMITSU: ANDREW THOMAS LEE
ing globes. Elevated cocktails (part of a program spearheaded by Gokan) are served in Baccarat stemware, and with a seating capacity of 70, the intimate space exudes exclusivity. “The idea is that you could be dressed up or dressed down and still feel comfortable,” says Arshid. “It’s got industrial and luxurious, and we play off of both.” umiatlanta.com

Since its launch in October at the hotly anticipated Westside Ironworks development, designer Bradley Odom’s DIXON RYE showroom has staked its claim as the nucleus of the West Midtown design district. Odom, an award-winning SCAD graduate and ASID designer, has classified his store with a pared-down approach, following the mantra “buy better, fewer things.” Sprawling 4,800 square feet, the space features industrial elements such as an original crane system, exposed beams and soaring ceilings, which provide the perfect backdrop for merchandise that includes pieces by artisans, craftsmen and designers, as well as custom upholstery designs by Odom himself and finds from Sabin, Astier de Villatte and Jefferson Hayman. 2016 COLORS OF THE YEAR Each December, the design industry awaits with bated breath the announcement of PANTONE’s Color of the Year. This year, the international color authority revealed not one but two shades: Rose Quartz, a pale pink, and Serenity, a baby blue hue. The pair, whether combined or used individually, was selected to convey feelings of both respite and well-being.

A STORIED EVENT WHAT, WHEN AND WHERE: Tenth Annual Shutze Awards, sponsored by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Southeast, on February 27, 2016, at the Piedmont Driving Club’s Grand Ballroom, a Shutze design.
THEY’LL BE THE JUDGES: Awards are decided through a blind judging process by industry leaders from outside the Southeast region.
CLASSIC RECOGNITION
The Southeast chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art awards excellence in traditional architecture and design at the 10th annual Shutze awards. WRITTEN BY Karen
Carroll
This year’s jurors are architect Mark Ferguson of New York firm Ferguson & Shamamian, landscape designer Kathryn Herman of Doyle Herman Design Associates in Greenwich, Connecticut, and interior designer Suzanne Tucker

THE AWARD GOES TO: With the exception of a previously announced Lifetime Achievement Award, winners will be revealed at the event and will be given to design professionals who are members of the ICAA and are significantly contributing to the ideals of 21st-century classical and traditional architecture. The practitioners or the projects must be located in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina or Tennessee.

THE REMARKABLE LEGACY of renowned Atlanta architect and 20th-century classicist Philip Trammell Shutze is evident in his iconic houses and public buildings that still stand regally amid the lush, leafy neighborhoods of the city. Structures with evocative names—some official, some bestowed with affection by local aficionados of his work—bear testament to the enduring scope of his portfolio: Swan House, The Pink Castle, The Pink Palace, The Villa and The Temple, to name just a few. Though their styles may range from Italianate to Colonial Revival, all reflect the deft hand of a man who meticulously studied the masters of his craft and applied the tenets of classical architecture by translating the scale, proportions and details in a way that was thoroughly appropriate for his time yet still resonates today. It’s fitting, then, that when the Southeast chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) gathers each year for an awards ceremony that celebrates modern-day practitioners of traditional design, they do so in Shutze’s name. “He raised the bar with his great scale and balance, sense of showmanship and respect for history,” says Jim Strickland, founder of the architecture and planning firm Historical Concepts, multiple Shutze award winner and honorary chairperson for this year’s event. “He really understood and learned from the masters of architecture and continues to influence those of us who endeavor to carry on the principles of classicism.” classicist-se.org.

Hooked on Classics Lanham shares her favorite inspirations. DESIGN INSPIRATION FROM THE PAST: John Fowler and Nancy Lancaster of Colefax and Fowler. I loved that English country house look when I was first starting out, and it’s still a strong influence on me. STYLE MUSE: Giorgio Armani. He designs clothes with simple, classic structure but puts in a little twist that makes things interesting and current. ELEMENTS NO LANHAM ROOM SHOULD BE WITHOUT: Beautiful light fixtures are the jewels in a room; antiques always anchor a space; and I usually include at a touch of black and a little gilt to give a room a bit of sparkle. MOVIE SET I WOULD LOVE TO DESIGN: Almost any movie from the ’40s. Even when the story lines were silly, the sets were fabulous. Cary Grant, Doris Day
2016 Lifetime Achievement Award:
JACKYE LANHAM KNOWN FOR HER EXQUISITELY detailed rooms that both respect and elevate a house’s architecture and its setting, the ICAA’s Lifetime Achievement honoree, Jackye Lanham, has been practicing interior design for almost 30 years. “Jackye embodies the values and virtues our organization represents,” says Greg Palmer, president of the board of trustees for the Southeast chapter of the ICAA and a principal at Harrison Design. “She has a keen understanding of classical design and is known for being a great collaborator across a project’s creative team. Her work is always appropriate, thoughtful and in context.
There’s a depth to her work that goes beyond just pretty decoration.” Lanham strives to create spaces that are timeless but timely, fresh but never trendy, with subtlety in color, a generous use of antiques and patina, and an emphasis on incorporating art and collections, all applied with an innate sense of the way her clients actually want to live in their houses. When asked what receiving this recognition means to her, she says, “Being honored by peers whom I admire and respect is a genuine thrill. But it doesn’t mean I’ll be retiring anytime soon. I can’t imagine doing anything else!”

WHEN JOSEPH DOWNS, the legendary former curator of American decorative arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Winterthur, suggested in 1949 that one need “look no further South than Baltimore to find pieces of quality,” he was met with a quick response from a Southern woman who asked, “Sir, do you speak from ignorance or prejudice?” The venerable Downs replied, “Ignorance, madam.” The Southern woman knew what Downs 24

did not: that the South has long possessed a trove of high-quality decorative arts. Today many of those important pieces are housed in the Georgia Museum of Art, founded in 1982 as the museum of The University of Georgia in Athens and the state museum of art. William Eiland has been its director for 26 years and has established it as a treasure that preserves material culture far beyond the geographical borders of the South. “By illuminating how other areas
of North America, Europe and Africa influenced the material culture of the South,” says Eiland, “we understand the complexity and richness of Southern decorative arts.” The museum has an extensively varied collection that ranges from Renaissance paintings to 19th- and 20th-century American paintings to African-American art to works by self-taught artists. The Henry D. Green Center for the Study of Decorative Arts is a critical scholarship component of the museum with a tremendous resource library, exhibitions and a biennial symposium focused on Southern decorative arts. “After establishing our permanent collection and building, the next phase of national excellence addresses expanding our programming to include all facets of education and participation,” says Eiland. Concurrent exhibits as disparate as George Segal, David Ligare and Cherokee basketry—combined with ongoing films and lectures—are evidence of the museum’s success in multiculturalism through inclusivity. “We believe that a palpable connection exists among the arts— including film and craft—that furthers visual-arts education across the spectrum of knowledge,” says Eiland. Clearly, Downs would be impressed with arts in the 21stcentury South. georgiamuseum.org

AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IS THE TIME WHEN many of us look into our crystal balls for signs of what will be hot and trendy in the year ahead. Based on my track record, I’m no clairvoyant, because rarely have my predictions been accurate. A few years ago, I was convinced that stockings were going to make a comeback. After all, nude-colored stockings do wonders for the legs, concealing those flaws that come with age. (Suntan-toned hosiery, on the other hand, is something to be avoided at all costs. But, of course, you already knew that.) I guess others didn’t concur, because the resurgence of panty hose still has yet to happen. In fact, some retail stores have even done away with their hosiery departments. So much for that prediction. Then there was the year I went on record—in a national magazine, of all places—as saying that I believed the Swedish smorgasbord would once again become de rigueur for savvy hosts and hostesses. Back in the 1960s, Swedish buffet dinners were all the rage, so I figured the time was ripe for their revival. You should have heard the laughter after that prediction was published! But now, I’m getting the last laugh, because on more than one occasion, I’ve attended cocktail buffets where, yes, Swedish meatballs, courtesy of IKEA, were on the menu. You see? I’m not as outlandish as I might seem. I haven’t been completely off base with my some of my predictions, because a few have come true. Back in the late ’90s, I called the Hollywood Regency revival accurately. More recently, it was the return of the midi skirt, which I had rightly anticipated after the years-long reign of the maxi skirt. (In all fairness, skirt lengths had nowhere to go but up.) So what’s on tap trendwise for 2016? I now know better than to list my predictions in print. However, I’ll give you a few hints: mah-jongg, the color apricot, Australian television dramas, and frappé cocktails. Don’t forget: You heard it here first.

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMEN
FROM THE DEAN Grace to you and peace! With holy excitement, I welcome you to the 2016 Cathedral Antiques Show! On behalf of the people of the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, I also welcome you to this vibrant church community. The Cathedral of St. Philip was established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta. We moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1933 and have grown tremendously since then. The Cathedral Antiques Show began as a small and seasonal fundraiser organized by our parish Episcopal Church Women. Their work—and ministry—now requires a year-round commitment and has raised more than $5 million for Atlanta-area charitable organizations. Obviously, we delight in the antiques presented here, in a show considered one of the finest in the Southeast. But this effort involves so much more than antiques! This is a powerful ministry of outreach. The proceeds this year are designated for Literacy Action, the leading adult literacy nonprofit in the Southeast. Their mission is to build better futures for undereducated adults by teaching language, math, life and work skills that empower them to their highest potential, and to ultimately eradicate low literacy, a root cause of poverty in our own Atlanta area. I sincerely thank this year’s co-chairs, Grace Foster and Laura Cullen, for doing an outstanding job. They have organized hundreds of volunteers in creating this weeklong event. Furthermore, I salute Kathie and Tom Mahaffey for serving as Honorary Chairs of the Antiques Show, as they represent Cathedral faithfulness and generosity at its best! I also thank each of you for visiting the Cathedral today, and I invite you to return for other occasions of service and prayer. We are open daily, and this is truly a house of prayer for all people. Your presence helps us fulfill that mission of openness and hospitality!

May God bless you always,
Welcome to the 45th Cathedral Antiques Show! We are delighted that you’ve chosen to spend some wintry days with us surrounded by beauty and inspiration. Over the years, the Show has adapted itself to the interests of a loyal following. Today, lively parties, two tours of homes, a speaker series and a flower festival complement the sought-after collections of exquisite antiques. Architectural Digest AD100 designer Suzanne Rheinstein will show us how to live comfortably with antiques in the homes we share with our children and dogs, and Veranda magazine Editor in Chief Clint Smith will take us on a tour of fabulous interiors enlivened by glorious flowers. We’ll learn the newest European techniques for using nature to adorn our tabletops from Belgian floral designer Gudrun Cottenier, and we’ll delight in the stories of author and Garden & Gun contributing editor Julia Reed, who will share her take on the good life and tell us how to entertain guests with style, enjoy our own parties and always have that perfect pitcher of sangria ready at a moment’s notice. Entertaining and expert appraisers will help us discover if we have treasures in our attics. Our 2016 beneficiary is Literacy Action, which leads Atlanta nonprofits in teaching some of this city’s 900,000 low-literate adults. With the proceeds of this year’s Show, we are delighted to fund Literacy Action’s implementation of a digital literacy initiative recently launched with a grant from Google. The Show is truly a labor of love. We extend our sincerest thanks to the members of the Antiques Show committee and to the hundreds of volunteers who work year-round to create this weeklong event; we are honored to work with such a talented group. We also salute the Cathedral sextons and housekeepers who assist us behind the scenes, always with a smile and a generous spirit. And we are most thankful for the leadership, advice and support of The Very Reverend Sam Candler and the Cathedral clergy and staff. We hope you will take advantage of all the offerings that make up what has truly become a festival of the decorative arts. Thank you for coming––enjoy the Show! KATHIE & TOM MAHAFFEY When Kathie and Tom Mahaffey moved to Atlanta fifteen years ago and joined the Cathedral, they continued the tradition of personal outreach and service that marked their time at five previous Episcopal parishes. Since then, Kathie and Tom have volunteered with many Cathedral ministries, serving the church, other members and the community at large. As a young college student living in DeLand, Florida, Kathie attended a statewide university church conference with her newfound friends from the University of Florida. Riding home, the youth director asked her to visit their Sunday School because she wanted Kathie’s participation and to introduce her to a young man who wasn’t able to attend the youth conference. This simple introduction was to the gentleman who would win her heart of 61 years, Tom Mahaffey.

They started teaching Sunday School, and in no time they were teaching during Week of Wonder and the Kanuga parish retreat, polishing brass in the nave, and working at the Cathedral Book Store. Both participate in the Dean’s Bible studies, share hospitality and fellowship through Foyers, and beautify the Cathedral grounds with the Garden Guild. Outreach ministries that benefit from Kathie and Tom’s dedication include the Antiques Show, Habitat for Humanity and St. Veronica’s Guild. They also serve the Atlanta community through the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Lifespan, the Atlanta Preservation Center and Kathie’s garden club. With 15 years of involvement at the Cathedral, they have invested their time and their hearts into this place of worship. They bring joy to every endeavor and build camaraderie with others along the way. Their combined smiles light up a room, and their simple, quiet way of just getting the job done helps motivate others to take on volunteer projects with them. Tom and Kathie continue to lead faithfully at the Cathedral. This service to the church, the community and their families––and a lifetime of faith commitment––makes them a perfect choice as honorary chairs of this year’s Antiques Show. The 2016 Cathedral Antiques Show is proud to recognize Kathie and Tom for the dedicated way they put their lifelong faith into practice.

2016 BENEFICIARY LITERACY ACTION The Cathedral Antiques Show raises funds through event ticket sales and donations by patrons and corporate sponsors. All of each show’s net proceeds are donated to a local charity. This year’s beneficiary is Literacy Action. Founded in 1968 and one of the leading adult literacy nonprofits in the United States, Literacy Action has taught reading and writing, mathematics, English as a second language and life and work skills to thousands of Georgians. Its mission is to teach undereducated adults literacy, life and work skills that empower them to reach their highest potential. Literacy Action is a grassroots driver of economic development and advances adults toward employment, citizenship, better wages and postsecondary education. Over 250 free classes in a variety of subjects are offered to adults in a given year. Students can enroll in multiple levels of reading and writing, mathematics and GED preparatory classes, as well as electives in digital, health and financial literacy. Three levels of English, in addition to conversation classes in local libraries, are available to adult learners from a variety of backgrounds. Literacy Action also offers specialized and localized programming for refugee-serving organizations, housing authorities and school districts. Over 35 countries are represented in the student body. Literacy Action partners with job training programs to help adults obtain jobs and works with employers on-site to advance employees toward positions of greater responsibility and increased pay. A literate community is a working community! “Literacy Action is proud to be the beneficiary of the 2016 Cathedral Antiques Show. The net proceeds of the 2016 Show will fund the implementation of our Digital Literacy Program, which is laying the foundation for a comprehensive digital inclusion program for our community,” says Austin Dickson, executive director of Literacy Action. “With hundreds of thousands of households with low digital literacy and lack of access, it’s imperative that we engage key partners and stakeholders, as well as the community at large, to help us close the digital divide.”

HABERSHAM ROAD
PEACHTREE DRIVE
This elegant house by the old Atlanta architectural firm Pringle & Smith has had only two owners since its construction in 1927. The current owners have preserved the integrity of the original design while making sensitive additions that accommodate contemporary modes of living.
With a cedar shake roof and walls of brick and stone, the exterior of this new house by Ladisic Fine Homes in collaboration with architect Linda MacArthur is a harmonious synthesis of traditional styles––particularly Cape Dutch and British Arts and Crafts. Inside, contemporary finishes set the tone for highceilinged spaces that flow seamlessly from one to another, and sunlight washes into almost every room.
The house is nestled in a bower of trees at the end of a gently curving drive. An unassuming front door opens to intimate, beautifully-proportioned rooms characterized by the confident use of bold, sophisticated color palettes and furnished with family heirlooms and art. French doors and terraces create a smooth transition between the comfortable interiors and the outdoor rooms formed by the angles of the house and the sloping terrain of the wooded setting. 16
88282.35.2.CAS0.indd 16
Before building this house, the homeowners and their children had outgrown two other houses in Peachtree Park. They wanted to build their next house in the same neighborhood and quickly identified this lot as the ideal location, but the owner was not interested in selling. When, after 17 long years, the property finally came on the market, the current owners snapped it up and set about building their stylish new home.

WEST WESLEY ROAD
ANDREWS DRIVE
Secluded from the street, the main facade of this house by Harrison Design Associates is a serene composition of taut classical proportions and precise details. Boxwood hedges and the building materials themselves engage the architecture in a dialogue that is continued inside the house, where clean lines are enriched by subtle textures and the natural beauty of wood and stone.
With its red tile roof and thick stucco walls, this 1928 house would have been a familiar sight in Florida, where Mediterranean Revival designs had constituted the de facto official architecture of the 1920s real estate boom. For Atlanta, however, the style was––and still is––a cheerful departure from the norm. Colorful interiors and tropical landscaping complement the flamboyant architecture.
The owners’ love of design is further reflected in furnishings of an almost sculptural quality, and the house provides a perfect setting for a highly personal art collection. But aesthetics were not the only considerations here: the house was built with sustainable materials, and it is handicapped-accessible. This house is a home where everyone can enjoy the view.
The current owners have filled the house with objects collected over decades of travel and mementos from favorite destinations, including the hotel on Capri where they have celebrated their wedding anniversaries. The brass room number plaque from the door of their favorite room there––a gift from the hotel staff––now adorns the door to the master bedroom. 17

NANCY CREEK ROAD A bridge over a woodland stream leads to the best of both worlds: a country house in the city. Having grown tired of life in a suburb, the homeowners began looking for a house in town. When they found this property, they hired architect Michael Dobbs to renovate the existing house and bring their vision to life. The result is an urban farmhouse perfectly suited to the daily lives of a family of five, with spaces throughout the home lending themselves equally to gathering as a family or reading in solitude. Bright, relaxed interiors feature soothing neutral colors and rustic textures such as beadboard and reclaimed wood; deep porches, broad lawns and a pool and pavilion encourage spending time outdoors. However—indoors or out—the star of the show is the natural beauty of the setting. 18

Museum of Art’s China: Through the Looking Glass exhibition, John Oetgen imbued the dining room with a spectacular sense of occasion thanks to convivial colors, conversation-worthy art and an unforgettable table setting that includes a collection of rose medallion porcelain and one-of-a-kind sterling silver settings and serving pieces. De Gournay’s silverleaf wallcovering sets a bedazzling tone; that sheen comes to life with a pair of watercolors created by Oetgen in addition to a set of English chairs upholstered in a rosy chenille. That subtle glamour is matched by Oetgen’s reverence for Orientalism; at one end of the room, a Chinoiserie screen presides over a group of sculptures no doubt as diverse as the guests who will enjoy sitting at this immaculately set table. 67

GRACEFUL GATHERING BARBARA WESTBROOK, WESTBROOK INTERIORS An expansive curved wall—an architectural hallmark of this freshly constructed home—created unique proportions in this salon, but that did not deter interior designer Barbara Westbrook from envisioning the room as a comfortably elegant gathering space for a young family and their guests. Westbrook was careful to keep a light palette in a room so rich in texture and tone, opting to fill the light-filled room with luscious textures, from silks to tactile wools. Interest abounds at every turn, from flokati throw pillows and a table with a tortoise-shell top to a pair of oversize paintings from Pryor Fine Art. Throughout the space, pretty pales are punctuated by pieces with dazzling sheens, for an effect that’s at once calming and exuberant. 68

MASTER OF THE MIX CAROLE WEAKS, C. WEAKS INTERIORS 30-year design-indus-
try veteran Carole Weaks imbued this airy, light-filled master suite with subtle romance and a nuanced mix of neutrals— from the embroidered Hodsoll McKenzie draperies and Osborne & Little wallpaper to the Stark carpet with a soft metallic sheen. A floor-to-ceiling canopy anchors the space, setting the stage for a bed bedecked in bespoke Julia B. linens. Despite its mix of both precious and new pieces (think a Swedish desk from a Paris buying trip and a silverleaf Paul Ferrante console), it’s a space that feels both quietly elegant and utterly livable, thanks in part to an inviting seating area next to Francois & Co.’s ornate, grey-polished Victoria stone mantle. After all, says Weaks, “If it’s going to be neutral, you have got to pay attention to the details.”

DARK AND HANDSOME JOEL KELLY, JOEL KELLY DESIGN This richly layered study by architectural and interior designer Joel Kelly and associate Jonathan Alexander is an evocative ode to both personal history and that time of year when relaxing fireside with a glass of Scotch is the ultimate luxury. A departure from the pared-back aesthetic his firm is known for, Kelly and Alexander fashioned a masterful counterpoint to the adjacent light-and-airy master bedroom thanks to deep, dark jewel tones like garnet, moss and walnut. “There’s this sense of being enveloped by the color,” says Kelly of the paneled space in which a dyed hide rug resembling leaves on the ground creates a movement that’s echoed by luscious texture at every turn. Treasures from Kelly’s own collection, such as Brutalist lamps and a Russell Whiting sculpture, round out the tailored but cozy space. 73

SUBTLE GLAMOUR ROBERT BROWN, ROBERT BROWN INTERIOR DESIGN A pair of kitchen
islands, one for prep work, and the other for dining, informed Robert Brown’s decision to envision this spacious breakfast niche as more of an evening entertaining space—one in which a couple could relax with a glass of wine and enjoy conversation among friends. Floor-toceiling Classic Cloth draperies pay homage to the adjacent kitchen’s moodier hues, while a duo of seating arrangements in a more solemn palette are brought to life thanks to an oversized painting from Pryor Fine Art. “The house is traditional, but the kitchen is not,” says Brown, who expertly mixed midcentury tables and woven outdoor chairs with upholstered pieces from his own furniture collection for a look that’s as comfortably chic as it is well-edited and statement-making.

BENI BORZA, KINGDOM WOODWORKS; KAREN FERGUSON, HARRISON DESIGN; ROBERT BROWN, ROBERT BROWN INTERIOR DESIGN
Kingdom Woodworks designer Beni Borza eshewed the all-white kitchen (and the traditional ornamentation you might expect for this sprawling European manor) in favor of a showstopping, ink-hued design that’s as glamorous as it is unexpected. Inspired by the wall of metal-and-glass doors specified by Harrison Design, Borza designed a layered hood in which a wood-and-black-glass frame encases a second, slatted layer of zinc-plated metal in a distressed finish. The antique-mirrored backsplash creates depth against honed black granite counters on the perimeter, while a pair of cream islands with brass accents serve as a chic counterbalance. Each quartzite-topped island serves its own function; one for prep and one for dining.

LINDSEY CORAL HARPER, LCH INTERIORS Influenced by Billy Baldwin, this Georgia
native turned New York interior designer transformed the lofty family room into an intimate space thanks floor-to-ceiling color, touches of animal print and deep jewel tones. Harper sought to employ the “gorgeous greens” found just outside the windows of this room, which overlooks the pool, but the scheme quickly evolved into teal, which, she admits, is more in tune with her style. Adding interest to every crevice, Harper accented the blue-green grasscloth that covers the walls with moldings hand-painted by artist Jay Lohmann in a faux-tortoise trim. Bunny Williams Home’s Tray Chic ottoman anchors a seating arrangement made cozy by the addition of a pair of woven seagrass chairs, plaid armchairs and a plush Celerie Kemble for Henredon sofa.

STUDIO SUITE BARBARA MARSHALL HOWARD FOR STUDIO B A fantastically draped bed
creates a compelling anchor in this upstairs studio space. Employing a fresh textile release—studio B, a Jim Thompson collection designed by artist Ben Carter—designer Barbara Howard envisoned a loft-like space in which a young designer might live, work and entertain. A long sofa doubles as twin beds, ideal for overnight guests or cocktails among friends. Low, button-tufted chairs in a luscious velvet are a nod to Tony Duquette’s famous watermelon chairs from his 1950s Paris apartment; the sunburst chandelier overhead is also a Duquette design. While color, thanks in part to a 16-foot saturated painting, appears to reign supreme, Howard notes that the room is primarily a black-and-white envelope punctuated by well-edited bursts of color.

DELICATE BALANCE TISH MILLS, HARMONIOUS LIVING BY TISH MILLS LLC Using English-style architecture as the jump-
ing point for her design, Tish Mills cultivated a soft and transitional guest suite that’s as eye-catching as it is serene. “The whole idea was to show how masculine and feminine balance within the space,” says Mills, who played with scale, color and material to create a sense of harmony. Saturated ombré Boeme draperies and bold oak furniture intermix with fresh, lighter hues in the textured rug and bedding, and Mills purposefully placed nightstands with strong scale next to the pale, washed bed frame. A seating area by the window provides an additional touch of femininity, as do a blush pink ceiling and a delicate chandelier. “It was fun to see men realize that they felt really comfortable in a room with so much pink,” notes the designer.

DESIGN AT PLAY MELANIE MILLNER, THE DESIGN ATELIER When scheming this children’s
room, Melanie Millner took a playful approach, creating a fresh, fun retreat with an equally tailored powder room. Cheerful white bedding and an alpaca rug soften the space, as do tufted headboards covered in durable, worryfree Perennials fabrics. The true showstopper, of course, is the room’s suspended platform, designed with the help of furniture maker Kevin Scanlon. Floating above twin beds, the piece is an ideal spot for lounging with friends. “The loft was designed with teenagers in mind,” says Millner, who is the mother of three teens. “The loft provides a quiet place to read, watch movies and accommodate a larger group for sleepovers. Friends are a big part of growing up, and it’s nice to have special places where they feel welcome.”

COMING UP ROSES CHRIS HOLT, HOLT INTERIORS In the entry foyer of this sprawling
abode, natural light streams through a two-story window wall, so it was important for designer Chris Holt, who also operates Buckhead showroom Noah J., to set a welcoming first impression. Inspired by the “movement, ease and colors” of both Robert Jessup’s Slow Time Turn painting in the upstairs stair hall, as well as by Katie Leede & Co.’s Rush of Rose fabric holding court in the foyer on an iron-andhide bench, Holt’s subsequent selections were driven by this feminine colorway. While rugs from Keivan Woven Arts ground each space, the designer maximized impact with statement vignettes that include raffia-wrapped acrylic consoles, oversize sculpture and upholstered chairs with sinous silhouettes that exemplify his tailored aesthetic.

Mathison’s preppy-chic room takes cues from the splashy motifs of Palm Beach, mixing bold pattern and color for an exuberant statement. Schumacher’s striking jade Zanzibar Trellis wallcovering anchors this scheme, and Mathison carried the vibrant fretwork pattern onto the elegant settee placed at the foot of the bed. “I wanted it to have the feel of a 1960s conservatory, but in a bedroom,” she says. “I filled the room with art, furniture, fabrics and accessories that I loved.” The designer continued this spirited theme in the adjacent hallway niches, accentuating the walls—outfitted in Schumacher’s Singeries wallpaper and Benjamin Moore’s azure Venezuelan Sea—with exuberant artwork, striking green lampshades and an antique marble-top console table.

LAVISH LAYERS KAREN FERGUSON, HARRISON DESIGN
Vivid blues and burnished bronzes create an intimate feeling in the upstairs guest suite, where Karen Ferguson mixed saturated color and rich materials for a layered effect. The Phillip Jeffries wallcovering allows a dark bed frame, writing table and ottoman to take center stage. A mix of more contemporary accessories—such as an onyx vanity, sheep throw and abstract painting—balance the traditional backdrop. The mix of textures and shapes continues into the laundry and bath, where Ferguson incorporated softer elements such as a custom gray-stained mahogany vanity, heathered gray linens and a cream vanity stool. “By incorporating old and new furnishings and accessories, we created a room that is both fresh and comfortable,” Ferguson says.

SUITABLY TAILORED JAMES WHEELER, J. WHEELER DESIGNS Taking cues from the exterior stonework and leafy views, James Wheeler opted for furnishings and materials with a rugged appeal, selecting rich woods and menswear-inspired fabrics for this distinctly masculine space. To allow for entertaining throughout the seasons, rattan dining chairs were sprayed with a protective coating, and the pressure-coated steel dining table’s whitewashed wood top was sealed for additional durability. Blending indoors and out, Wheeler selected tailored upholstered pieces that would traditionally be displayed inside, such as an wool sofa by A. Rudin. “Our hope for this space is that it would serve as an extension of the living room be enjoyed in all seasons,” the designer says.

OLD-WORLD APPEAL
KERRY HOWARD, KMH INTERIORS “The laundry room
shouldn’t be treated as a separate space,” says designer Kerry Howard, who designed the compact mudroom and laundy with Scottish architecture in mind. “I wanted to embrace the room by making it connect with the design scheme of the rest of the house,” he says. To that end, Howard brought the exterior limestone’s texture and curb appeal inside with a reflective cork wallcovering by Thibaut that imparts a sense of warmth. From there, the designer outfitted the close quarters with deftly placed transitional accents—a lantern from Currey and Company and an earthy Robert Allen fabric—that balance old-world sophistication with modern appeal.

SOFT & SERENE HEATHER HOGAN ROBERTS, IVY & VINE Heather Roberts of Ivy & Vine tackled the challenge of a tightly designed side entry hall and groundfloor powder room by layering organic elements, lacquered accessories and an ethereal cream-and-blue palette to create a soft transition from the adjacent outdoor terrace. Roberts opted to continue the open-air theme in the powder room with Krane’s Banana Leaf wallpaper. “The wallpaper in the powder room is the hero,” says Roberts, who chose the paper for its Palm Beach–inspired pattern and sapphire hue. Vintage chinoiserie-style console lamps and a custom table skirt continue the color scheme, as do a set of abstract paintings and a gallery wall of silver leaf–framed intaglios, which complement the high ceilings without overpowering the room. 95

old-world-meets-modern stair hall, Steve McKenzie turned to Grange’s Miss Butterfly chest of drawers—which boasts Louis XV lines and a contemporary Osborne & Little floral wallpaper—as his starting point. The designer continued the botanical theme by outfitting the windows in custom shades from his personal Garden Bouquet fabric collection. Meanwhile, a classical bust, one of McKenzie’s trademark style elements, imparts a storied history, while a custom-designed tufted club chair in gray velvet continues the inky color scheme and serves as a comfortable place to curl up with a book. “I wanted to create the modern version of a quiet reading nook: tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house, but within earshot,” says McKenzie.

TIMELESS COMFORT JUDY BENTLEY, INTERIOR VIEWS, INC The elegantly appointed gallery, lo-
cated on one end of the second-story hallway, exudes classic appeal thanks to Judy Bentley’s keen eye for enduring style. A handsome window, framed in an enveloping Ralph Lauren tartan, illuminates the room, while the walls— painted Benjamin Moore’s rich Fairmont Green—contribute to the cocooning effect. A pair of wingback chairs continue the color scheme, while classic furnishings such as a walnut table, Regency consoles and a 19th-century chinoiserie Parliament clock cultivate Bentley’s signature sense of timelessness. “This would be a great area to reflect on the moment with a cocktail or a good book in hand,” says the designer. 97

EASY ELEGANCE JESSICA BRADLEY, JESSICA BRADLEY INTERIORS Though spacious, this formal powder room reads far from cavernous and cold. “I knew I had to have something grand on the walls to warm the space into feeling more intimate and inviting,” says designer Jessica Bradley. She found her solution in Lewis & Wood’s ornate wallpaper in “Bacchus,” which made its U.S. debut at the 2015 Home for the Holidays showhouse. The pattern, derived from Elizabethan wall painting, is complemented by an equally old-world Italian gilt mirror and an antique tufted chair. For artwork, she created a wall of charcoal vases on antique wood brackets, adding modern elements such as a lamb’s-wool ottoman and sleek sconces for balance and continuing this harmony into the adjoining hallway via gilded sculptures and a distressed chest. 98

BENI BORZA & KINGDOM WOODWORKS, KAREN FERGUSON, HARRISON DESIGN, CAROLE WEAKS, C. WEAKS INTERIORS The light-and-
bright master bathroom is an ode to serenity. Illuminated by a pair of picture windows, the space feels downright ethereal thanks to details like Carrara marble floors, polished marble counters, nickel faucetry and sconces and cabinetry painted in a Benjamin Moore slate hue. Equal parts fashionable and functional, this is a bathroom in which “his and hers” are comfortable colliding, thanks to a large walk-in shower that deftly divides the pair of closets, commodes and vanities. Choosing to keep the space as clean as its design, Carole Weaks opted for minimal ornamentation in the form of monogrammed linens by Julia B. and a Roman shade in a subtle Hodsoll McKenzie fabric.

THE REST OF THE COUNTRY may operate under the delusion that we bask year-round in near equatorial heat, but no ma’am and no sir—Atlanta gets cold (like when it drops below 62 degrees), and our infatuation with mantels and fire tools proves it. Stone, metal, wood, marble, exposed brick— whether it’s modern and
floating or hand-carved rococo, there’s simply no better place we Atlantans would rather hunker down. When I was young, all of my 48 cousins had homes with fireplaces. One uncle built replica houses, which he sold quickly. When they settled into a replica Robert E. Lee, their fireplace was not just the family gathering spot; it was large
enough to walk in. Not just walk. Run. After buying my first house, a fireplace was chief on the list, and the bungalow on Stephen Long Drive had a beauty, as did the houses that followed, and I was determined to enlarge every single one. I spent ages searching Miami Circle and The Galleries of Peachtree Hills. I ripped out old pine mantels and grabbed up French limestone ones. These are antiques dealers who simply can’t resist ancient mantels, andirons, screens and tools—some, in fact, dedicate a whole floor. I have recently decided to move from my pied-àterre in New York and have since spent hours (okay, days) wandering Paris on Ponce. I have flummoxed the realtor with my description of the perfect-sized apartment: “Just focus on a working fireplace, and who cares about updated bath and kitchen.” I am a designer, after all. The rest I can fool with. I just need a place for my tinder and me.
ERICA GEORGE DINES
THE PERFECT HEARTH IS ALWAYS TOP OF MIND FOR MARCIA, WHO KNOWS THAT EVEN IN 60-DEGREES-BELOW WEATHER, ATLANTANS LOVE TO GATHER AND REFLECT BY THE FIRE.
