OUR MARCH ISSUE SHINES THE SPOTLIGHT on three designing women who are redefining the look of traditional interiors. The classics, of course, never go out of style, but Liz Williams, Liza Bryan and Barbara Westbrook collectively prove that traditional style can be elegant but accessible, informed by the past but retrofitted with contemporary conveniences—at every stage of life. For a pair of longtime friends, Liz Williams decorated the interiors of a Linda MacArthur-designed Buckhead residence over the course of 10 years—a process that speaks to the timelessness of her work. Also in Buckhead, Liza Bryan and architect Keith Summerour enacted a historically sensitive renovation of a beloved Neel Reid classic (we dare you to decipher where the original house ends and the addition begins). For a floor-to-ceiling town house renovation, Barbara Westbrook and Yong Pak combined forces to deliver a home that lives large and stylishly, thanks to an open floorplan and an array of personal treasures on display. Speaking of the “new” traditional, join me and the staff of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles on March 18th for our annual Reader Day at ADAC (Atlanta Decorative Arts Center). Inspired by the architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens and the landscaping of Gertrude Jekyll, architect William H. Harrison
designed this backyard pavilllion to reect his clients penchant for outdoor living and taste for the English countryside. Nestled among lush greenery, this stone structure mixes cottage charm with natural allure and serves as an ideal site for springtime entertaining.

STREAMLINED SIMPLICITY
A pair of empty nesters with a taste for simplicity enlists interior designer Karen Ferguson to create a seamless transition between outdoors and in.
KAREN FERGUSON’S CLIENTS moved into their new Buckhead abode with the intention to declutter and start fresh. Bearing this in mind, Harrison Design’s interior design director helped the couple curate a peaceful outdoor retreat that lends itself to quiet evenings by the fire as well as lively dinner parties. Sited between the dining table and fireplace, a daybed centers the room by lending itself to both dining and lounging. Ferguson opted for a monochromatic color palette, selecting serene, aqua-hued fabrics that keep the focus on the outdoor landscape, which is visible through large, screened windows. Vaulted ceilings and rustic
“With the large openings, you feel connected to the outside while you’re still inside,” Ferguson explains. For an organic touch, the designer peppered the space with lowmaintenance potted succulents, which fit the homeowners’ busy lifestyle and keep the space fuss-free. “They’re the perfect accessory for outdoor living,” the designer notes.

STATELY & SERENE
A commanding poolside pavilion designed by William H. Harrison employs sturdy architectural bones and free-flowing landscaping. WHEN DESIGNING THIS POOLSIDE PAVILION for a family with a laid-back lifestyle and an affinity for outdoor living, William H. Harrison of Harrison Design focused primarily on cultivating a space that was conducive to casual gatherings and making it an extension of the main home’s aesthetic. “It’s a spacious house, but they wanted the feel of a more intimate cottage,” says Harrison, who worked with landscape architect Jeremy Smearman of Planters to envelop the pavilion’s stone walls in lush greenery, a decision that softens the stoic structure and creates a more laid-back effect. Built with the same stone as the main house, the archways pair with the pavilion’s rough-hewn, timber-frame roof to create a distinct sitting area while maintaining an open flow into the surrounding pool and gardens. Ideal for summertime cookouts or close gatherings on crisp fall evenings, a practical outdoor fireplace serves as the final touch, doubling as a grill and accommodating the homeowners’ taste for less formal entertaining.

PRACTICAL COMFORT
Margaret Kirkland fashions a family-friendly porch perfect for dining, lounging, crafting or conversation.
TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS HISTORIC Grant Park porch’s spacious floor plan—and keep her client’s affinity for open-air living in mind—interior designer Margaret Kirkland designated separate areas for sitting and dining, placing a sectional sofa from Logan Gardens on one end and a dining table and chairs on
living space as possible,” says Kirkland of the familyoriented space. “We needed both comfort and utility.” To that end, a ceiling fan keeps things breezy in summer while a fireplace maintains a warm feeling when temperatures drop. RESORT-LIKE RETREAT
Employing pops of color and pretty pattern, Steve McKenzie creates a luxurious outdoor escape from city life.
TO REVAMP THE LOOK of a once lackluster pool house, Steve McKenzie focused on fresh design details that pair the indulgent feel of a resort with the warmth of home. “The house had beautiful bone structure already, but they needed to update some of their furniture,” the designer says. He addressed this by installing a comfortable dining set from Grange that yields ample space for outdoor socializing. Keeping the color palette simple, McKenzie paired neutral hues with cheery pops of orange via an amalgam of bright pillows and fabrics by Laurie Bell. The cut-velvet material, McKenzie notes, perfectly blends indoor sophistication with outdoor durability. “It’s casual enough that you can be in your swimsuit and plop down on the couch and have lunch,” he says. “I just love the juxtaposition.”

Interior designer Gary McBournie’s projects possess a certain joie de vivre—and his exuberant new line for Antilles Designs (available at Scalamandré at ADAC) follows suit. Inspired by McBournie’s penchant for pattern and bold strokes (orange, he says, is his favorite neutral), AH&L called upon the multifaceted designer to

“I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A FRANCOPHILE,” declares Meg Reggie. Case in point: The Atlanta publicist’s once cramped and outdated master bath is now a bright study in Parisian charm, thanks to a recent overhaul accomplished with the help of designer Jack Poles of J. Poles Interiors Inc. “We wanted to make the room bigger,” says Poles. “The existing cabinets and tub didn’t give a lot of space.” To create a sense of openness, Reggie and Poles enlisted contractor Michael Phelps of Southern Heritage Homes to knock out the original built-in tub and remove a bank of cabinetry with a vanity and sink that obstructed the room’s flow. To further streamline the look, they bathed the cabinets in a stunning blue hue, Benjamin Moore’s French Toile, a color that informed most of Reggie’s inspiration. “From just that color, the whole project came together,” she says. Left with a much roomier floor plan, Poles and Reggie next tackled the fixtures and finishes, opting to infuse the space with bright, crisp updates, such as brushed nickel fixtures, raised round vessel sinks for subtle but modern appeal and gleaming white Carrara marble floors. In the corner by the window, Poles placed the room’s showstopper: an elegant freestanding tub by American Standard that boasts romantic faux-cornice edges. The ethereal draperies and tailored valance overlooking the tub complete the look, creating the perfect complement to a calming soak in the tub. Adding jewel-like touches are a collection of curated details, including a delicate pewter-and-crystal chandelier hanging from above, a pair of gilded mirrors uncovered from storage, delicate wire baskets and—the finishing flourish—a patterned wallpaper from Thibaut whose blues, grays and greens tie in with the surrounding cabinet colors and white accents. “Every time I go in here I’m happy,” says Reggie. “We made the room look exactly how I wanted while still working within the Country Frenchstyle of the rest of the house.”

FASHION-FORWARD UPDATES ARE IN the works at Phipps Plaza. Construction is already underway on AC HOTEL BY MARRIOTT, a new introduction to Atlanta and one of only a few in the U.S. The 166-room hotel will maintain a clean and contemporary design with European flair and will accommodate both business and leisure travelers, according to Patrick Peterman, vice president of development and asset intensification for Simon, which owns Phipps and Lenox Square. Atlantans can expect to see the hotel open in spring 2016. Also in the works at Phipps are a new midrise apartment building, Domain at Phipps Plaza, expected to open this fall, and additional mall renovations such as a new entrance with perforated metal panels and a backlit glass curtain wall. marriott.com

Naomi Von Habersham WHEN I HEAR THE PHRASE “DESIGNING WOMEN,” I immediately think of the madcap sitcom of the same name. On many a weeknight in the late 1980s and early ’90s, it was Julia, Suzanne, Mary Jo and Charlene, along with their sidekicks Anthony and Bernice, who entertained me. But long before the ladies of Sugarbaker Designs made decorating comedic, a real-life group of designing women made decorating a serious profession. Take, for example, Elsie de Wolfe, the self-proclaimed first professional decorator. In the early 20th century, she banished gloomy Victorian-era decor and ushered in a lighter, more elegant design sensibility. Then there was Dorothy Draper, whose work at high-profile hotels and resorts made her one of our country’s first celebrity decorators. Between her books and product lines, Draper became America’s most recognizable interior designer. And I mustn’t forget Sister Parish. What Parish lacked in formal design training, she more than made up for with a wealth of style, taste and good sense. Of course, men have also contributed significantly to the design profession. Few designers helped to define 20th-century American style more than Billy Baldwin and Albert Hadley. However, women played roles here, too. Baldwin often credited his gimlet eye to the time he spent working for Ruby Ross Wood, one of the great female decorators. And Hadley served as the modern-minded foil to Sister Parish’s traditionalism, creating one of the most successful, not to mention legendary, design partnerships in history. Today, we have scores of female designers continuing the tradition established by their predecessors. Like de Wolfe, these women are redefining the language of design. And just as Draper did decades ago, they are launching product lines and gaining national recognition. We can thank those fictional decorators of Designing Women for giving us laughs, but it’s the real-life designing women, both past and present, to whom we owe a real debt of gratitude.

Benjamin Moore’s Grecian Green unifies the spacious kitchen, a collaboration between Jane Hollman of Studio Entourage and architect Linda MacArthur. The pair designed the space to open up to both the formal dining room and a familyfriendly den. Williams added drum-style ceiling fixtures with green and brown trim to harmonize with the rich wood countertops before layering in neutral accents.
S STRIKING THE RIGHT balance between family-friendly and entertaining-ready is no simple task, but Atlanta interior designer Liz Williams isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. This much is evident in her work for Buckhead residents Katherine and Chip Reed. “We met when both of our middle children were in the same preschool class,” the designer recalls. “That was 10 years ago now.” It wasn’t long before the Reeds requested that Williams adorn their new abode, designed by Atlanta architect Linda MacArthur, on the foundation of a razed ranch in the heart of Buckhead. Built from the ground up, their dream home was intentionally free-flowing and full of light, necessitating a calm, cohesive approach to decorating that allows the rooms to blend beautifully into one another. The residence, says Williams, has taken shape over more than a decade, a fact that speaks to the timelessness of her work. Beginning with the basics, the designer gradually made her way to bedrooms on the upper floors. Downstairs, the kitchen, which opens up to both a casual den and formal dining room, captures her design acumen. The countertops, cabinetry and color were

chosen by MacArthur and Jane Hollman of Studio Entourage during construction, but Williams intuitively parlayed the vintage green shade into coordinating fabrics, furnishings and fixtures—including an assemblage of creamware that adds a layer of interest a wall of built-in cabinetry. Truly the hub of the house—the young family completes homework from the island, enjoys meals from the breakfast nook and up with a book in the den—the casual room covers all of the bases. In the family room, a large wall behind the sofa was brought to life by a series of framed botanicals in earthy tones, while the down-to-earth effect was enhanced by an ultra-durable ottoman the couple’s boys “practically live on.” This hardworking room opens onto the pool, where Williams complemented the Ed Castro–designed landscape and hardscape with watery hues that harmonize with the home’s interior. Replete with dressmaker details and a deft mix of old and new, Williams’s serene palette, developed through the years, serves as a consistent breath of fresh air. “This has been such a fun project,” says Williams. “After 10 years, we’re even better friends.” And if her strengthened friendships with the Reeds are any indication of a job well done, the designer couldn’t have a happier pair of clients. The family room embraces the airiness of the adjacent pool deck via expansive French doors. Staying true to that spirit, assemblages of transparent demijohn jars and primitive paddles serve as appropriate accents for a room that spills out to the pool. opposite The home’s architecture, conceived by Atlanta architect Linda MacArthur, bears all the hallmarks of a traditional English country dwelling, while its floor plan is custom fit for this family’s contemporary way of life.

FEW HOMES MATCH THE GRANDEUR of Atlanta’s natural beauty, but the Charles Case House in Buckhead rivals the city’s springtime profusion with its masterful grace, perfect proportions and exquisite attention to detail. Architect Neel Reid designed the renowned residence, which he named Somerset House, in 1919, modeling the design on Tintinhull House in England. Huge limestone eagles perched on bold columns at the front driveway are the hallmarks of this distinguished residence and provide the basis for its alternate name, Eagle House. Throughout the 20th century, the house endured a series of modifications that were not always in keeping with Reid’s original aesthetic. The new owners brought in Atlanta interior designer Liza Bryan, architect Keith Summerour and contractor Jim Eiland of C & E Remodeling to ensure that it would remain historically

referenced as it transitioned into the 21st century. “It had such great bones that it immediately spoke to me,” says Bryan. Significant research went into restoring the home. “We studied historic properties from Newport to the Hudson River Valley to England in order to achieve authenticity throughout the house,” says the designer. Architecturally, the house needed considerable changes to accommodate a new kitchen and family room. By adding an 18-foot addition across the entire back of the house, Summerour created significantly more space while preserving the original architectural footprint and maintaining a seamless blend with the original structure. “What he did was so simple but pure genius, and I’m certain Neel would have done this too,” confirms Bryan. Keeping with the preservation mission, the house was remodeled

Due to the massive original limestone eagles that ank the front entrance, the Charles Case House is often referred to as The Eagle House.

with materials appropriate to the time of the original construction. Plaster walls, proper hardware and carefully researched paint colors yield not only a home with verticality and great light, but one that is also historically accurate. The clients’ extensive collection of antiques and decorative arts dictated the interior design, while their collection of period Turkish carpets determined the color palette. Sumptuous traditional draperies and antiques fill the rooms, but “we used brightly colored fabrics to give life to all the spaces,” says Bryan. As a nod to the home’s name, Bryan found ways to integrate eagles into the design. Dramatic eagle finials cap drapery rods in the living room, while a large platter from the owners’ collection of Royal Crown Derby china rests on a custom water-gilt eagle sconce above the fireplace. Fortunately, the exterior of the house needed only minimal modifications. After cleaning the original limestone exterior, Bryan brought in lighting designer Joanne Sims, who created new lanterns based on Regency patterns. Under the deft hand of celebrated landscape architect John Howard, the mature, lush landscape continues to evolve and flourish. It’s the resounding commitment of both the homeowners and those involved in the restoration that ensures the Eagle House will remain a treasure for generations to come. See Resources, Back of Book.

E EXPERTLY EDITED INTERIORS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO READ LIKE A SHOWROOM FLOOR, immaculate in design yet devoid of warmth. It’s a problem that designer Barbara Westbrook, however, has managed to conquer with great success, and this Buckhead town house—with an equal air of sophistication and approachability—is a testament to her talent. Westbrook came on board to the floorto-ceiling renovation of this townhome at the suggestion of architect Yong Pak, who felt his clients—a couple downsizing from a 2-acre property—would appreciate the designer’s timeless aesthetic. “The homeowners’ daughter lives in California, and they had been collecting photographs of light and bright homes that are so familiar to that region,” recalls Westbrook. Their desire for an airy abode, in fact, was what attracted the couple to this particular town house in Atlanta’s Mooregate Square community. The combination living/dining room features an expanse of arched iron doors that not only allow natural light to filter throughout the open-concept first floor but also lead to a lush and private backyard. Taking a cue from the leafy surroundings, Westbrook and design associate Kim Winkler employed an earthy color palette of greens, warm grays, creams and persimmon throughout the home, where graceful and casual furnishings mix with ease. The house is also full of Westbrook’s signature dressmaker details. From the scalloped-

edge drapery gracing the iron doors to the delicate pleating on the vanity chair in the master bathroom, there’s no shortage of thoughtful flourishes—and for good reason. “Details are what set interiors apart and tell you that someone put a lot of thought into the design,” she says. “Personalization is important so that it doesn’t look like you pulled vignettes directly off a showroom floor or ordered everything straight from a catalog.” Westbrook’s knack for comfortably layering unique elements is most apparent in the master bedroom. Working around the client’s four-poster bed, she began by anchoring the space with a persimmoncolored Oushak rug. She then mixed in hand-printed linen drapery and throw pillows with whipstitch detailing for a sense of texture, while an antique caned bench and pine table display collections of vintage baskets and other rarities. Antiques are also a signature of Westbrook’s designs; the designer maintains that they add a hint of intrigue to any space. “With an antique, you can put your hand on the arm of a chair and think about who else did that before you 200 years ago,” she says. “The history or story behind it is so special, and you can’t get there by a chair produced in China a thousand times.” It’s this mentality that has allowed the designer to cultivate a storied home rich in both detail and warmth—a genuine Westbrook hallmark. Trellises
ATLANTANS have always had a fascination with trellises. Whether its an outdoor trellis with climbing roses or trellis-patterned wallpaper indoors, its beauty carries timeless appeal—and for the next generation, may just be the new calling card of a bona fide Southern belle. That was certainly the case with my own grandmother, who, fresh from the potato fields in rural Ireland, became an instant sensation when—like the rooms that design maven Elsie de Wolfe put together for The Colony Club—she bedecked her sunroom with an actual trellis after moving south of the MasonDixon line. Why do we love the look of latticework, trellises or treillage? It reminds us of the outdoors; it has enviable symmetry. It’s preppy. And
Reflected dramatically in a rounded mirror, lattice detailing adds intrigue and texture to bright white walls and high ceilings in a foyer by Margaret Bosbyshell and Clary Bosbyshell Froeba of Margaux Interiors.
80
right now, the look is everywhere—perhaps inspired by Dorothy Draper, who could wield the trellis like a trident at The Greenbrier. A true daughter of the South, I rigged up my daughter’s room with a velvet ribbon trellis back when she was still too young to pick a fight over my design whims (or some might say sensibilities). At my New Orleans pad, I have recently painted a trellis-patterned mural that has left me breathless (literally, while I sat atop an 11-foot ladder with a tape measure and shaky paintbrush). But I persevered, and the trellis is now my pride and joy. I have brought the outdoors in. I have made the room elegant and festive and, darn it, I stand by my credo: Everything is better with trellis!

Letter from the President & Tour of Kitchens Chair Dear Friends and Patrons, Welcome to The Junior League of Atlanta’s 18th Annual Tour of Kitchens! An Atlanta springtime tradition, the Tour of Kitchens has raised more than $1.5 million since its inception to advance The Junior League of Atlanta’s mission of promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of our members and improving our community. The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. (JLA) is an organization of women volunteer leaders who make a positive impact in our community. Our 3,500 trained volunteers contribute over 75,000 volunteer hours each year to Atlanta non-profit agencies supporting women and children. JLA members tackle some of society’s most pressing issues such as early childhood education, human trafficking and generational poverty. We are women transforming our community, and the JLA Tour of Kitchens and associated Toast of the Tour provide financial resources toward a better Atlanta.
Betsy Leach, Chair | Jen Bennecke, President
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our members who work to make this fundraising event a success, and to our generous sponsors, especially Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles has provided exceptional resources year after year for the Tour of Kitchens. A special thank you to Brad Hanner, Associate Publisher, who has been a treasured partner since our inception. The Toast of the Tour evening celebrates gracious homeowners, talented designers and wonderful contractors responsible for creating the kitchens. Gourmet food stations and signature cocktails are available for attendees to enjoy, as well as the highly anticipated live and silent auctions. We extend our gratitude to PIRCH, our generous host for the event. Your two days visiting the Tour of Kitchens will be a source of inspiration. Admire the vision and artistry of 14 prominent kitchen designers while you experience cooking demonstrations from some of Atlanta’s top chefs. Your patronage of the Tour of Kitchens empowers our members to truly be ‘Women Transforming our Community.” Enjoy the tour!
Warmly,
Jennifer E. Bennecke 2014-2015 President The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc.

PARK 75 As sous chef at Park 75 Restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta, Jomo Morris oversees the breakfast and lunch program alongside the acclaimed Executive Chef Robert Gerstenecker. A native Jamaican, Jomo grew up close to the oven where he created island favorites in his mother’s bakery. When he suddenly lost his book of lifelong recipes, Jomo traded in his rolling pin for a French knife and moved to the U.S. where he would work for a number of hotels and establishments such as Disney World before quickly moving up the ranks at Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta where he now hails as sous chef. “Cooking is my way of speaking. Everything I do, each idea, every menu item that finds its way onto a plate creates conversation that allows me to connect with every language and culture.”
PEACHDISH Born and raised in Atlanta, Seth Freedman’s career in cooking spans nearly two decades. He graduated first in his class from the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America. His culinary adventures have taken him around the globe and into some of the world’s best kitchens. He has cooked with Oceana, March and Tabla in NYC and the Four Seasons and Bacchanalia at Star Provisions in Atlanta. Since 2010, he has served as the proprietor of Forage & Flame, a personalized culinary services company that offers everything from in-home dining to large celebrations to private cooking classes. Chef Seth Freedman serves as PeachDish’s Culinary Director and develops each week’s local ingredient-driven, Southern-inspired recipes.
SOUTHERN ART A native of southwest France, chef Didier Lailheugue began his career training under renowned chefs Patrick Henriroux and Alain Ducasse. After receiving his credentials, Didier spent seven years mastering his craft with Relais & Chateaux. In 2005, he joined the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts family in Mexico City before becoming executive chef at InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta in 2009. From Cape Town to Bora Bora, Didier has had the same objective of spreading the fame of French cuisine and sharing his culinary passion with professionals. About the Kitchen When Atlanta-based artist, Zoe Zelby, and her husband, Dr. David Zelby, asked us to work on their new home’s kitchen, we were excited for the challenge of designing for an artist. We took Zoe’s appreciation of fine craftsmanship, functional spaces and attention to detail to design the Zelby’s kitchen. This kitchen is located in the central living area of the home. Since the Zelby’s cook daily, the kitchen needed to be highly functional, clean and sophisticated. A tall furniture piece was designed to integrate the refrigerator, steam oven, small kitchen appliances and pantry items, where everything is hidden behind pocket doors. The kitchen island provides plentiful storage and a significant surface area for preparing tasty meals. A simple hood and clean door style was chosen to create a subtle background for Zoe’s art and exquisite collectables. The high gloss lacquered finish, gray ash wood and gracefully defined marble and brass hardware tie the kitchen together to create the beautiful functional design which we strive to apply to everything we do.

About the Kitchen
Designer Courtney Shearer and her husband, Brent, purchased their 1944 bungalow in 2012 and immediately began the kitchen renovation. The original kitchen was not only small, but lacked functionality. By removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room and closing off an exterior door, the space was opened up allowing precious real estate to be captured. In designing the room, every inch of space was considered to ensure this small kitchen exploded with functionality. White marble countertops, a painted brick backsplash, brass hardware and frameless cabinetry complete with a custom mullion design on the refrigerator panels create a classic space layered with personality!

About the Kitchen This lovely home’s original kitchen did not make the most of its beautiful back yard. Architect Frank Irizarry’s innovative design increases the workspace, incorporating a window-lined open staircase to a new laundry room and carport below. A new slate fireplace adds warmth to the adjoining family room, which affords views on three sides and direct access to the deck. Designer Suzanne Seymour marries traditional to modern, pairing custom Shaker cabinets with Hanstone counters and limestone backsplashes to bring this classic home up to date. A new window introduces needed light to the butler’s pantry. New hardwoods tie the rest of the home to the new space, which is inviting, functional and perfect for entertaining.

About the Kitchen This kitchen was part of a major whole-house renovation designed and built by HammerSmith. The original structure had not been updated since the 50s and was a rabbit warren of tiny, dark and disjointed rooms. The challenge was not only to open the spaces and bring in natural light, but to create a connection to the beautifully landscaped backyard. The architectural massing is what makes the new space inviting and comfortable, and integrates it with the original part of the house. HammerSmith understands that daily piles and stacks of things to do never go away. This renovation addresses that by having a place for everything. Keys, paperwork and mail?--they land on the built-in desk instead of the adjacent island. Pet station, check! The scullery kitchen is ready for any type of entertaining. However, not all appliances are hidden. The showcased Wolf Range with its dramatic zinc hood grounds the kitchen and creates a delineated command central.

About the Kitchen When Ingrid and Oliver met Matthew through their interior designer Monika Thiels, they’d found a house that they loved with a kitchen not really suited for a modern life or for people who like to live in their kitchens. Matthew opened the alcove kitchen both to the breakfast room and to the outside, and unified the two spaces with a singular yet simple ceiling, and a long central island. Transitional finish and material choices make what is essentially a modern kitchen fit in this traditional home.

About the Designer “A spontaneous, free and richly experienced life — I imagine this to be possible for me, my clients, for everyone, everywhere, everyday.” With these words, Matthew Rao, a thought and design leader, reveals a deeply rooted belief that the kitchen is a nexus for creating meaning and connection, both within the personal home and beyond. For over two decades, Matthew’s quiet but unwavering dedication to design excellence in articulating this vision has garnered local and national awards and publication. Matthew believes that the kitchen is the modern nexus for meaning and connection. Beginning in 1988 as a modernist pioneer in a staunchly traditional Southern environment, Matthew has gracefully succeeded and impacted the course of design not just in kitchens but in architecture and lifestyle, in both Atlanta and across the nation. Matthew’s design legacy is fueled by architectural, artistic, social and ecocentric passions for farm to school food initiatives, urban design, public transportation, art, photography, travel and downhill skiing. Whatever he does, Matthew does well and in the company of cherished friends, good food, high integrity and inspired environments.

About the Kitchen
4397 Jett Place Atlanta, GA 30327
The homeowners’ playful nature comes shining through in this new transitional kitchen with a light and fun California feel as well as thoughtful use of space. Though this traditional-style home functions well for the family, the homeowners’ wanted a more modern and open kitchen to fit their lifestyle. The new kitchen proudly boasts a display area for the homeowners’ beloved Lichtenstein art, a small desk area, pantry and breakfast bar balanced by a dramatic Blue 4 oven AGA Cooker, as well as a Sub-Zero Wine Cooler and Refrigerator. The homeowner wanted a neutral palette to highlight the art so the color of the AGA was selected to add a splash of color to compliment the paintings. The back of the open display area above the Sub-Zero Wine Cooler and Refrigerator was finished to match the AGA to pull all the design elements together. The clean lines, bright and fun accents, transitional hardware, and lighting make this a bright, functional, and fun kitchen.

About the Kitchen The Ladisics requested a “theatrical, functional and comfortable kitchen” in their 400 s.f. kitchen. A sculptural mixed metal hood over a custom Wolf range top is the central axis. Alcoves made from planked wood create symmetrical entablatures and pottery display. The left holds two single ovens, a steam oven, microwave, refrigerator drawers and glass wall cabinets for dishes. The right holds refrigerator/freezers and an entrance to the luxurious working pantry. A walnut eating bar wraps around the 12’ long island that holds 2 dishwashers and a giant sink. Two walk-in pantries and appliance garages, a sink and dishwasher, and a plethora of storage make this cranberry-hued working pantry essential. Mixing metals is a signature of Matthew’s as seen in the faucets, hood, refrigerator panels and decorative hardware. Besides ceiling lights, pendants, up lighting and multiple sconces were utilized. The texture and pattern of the wood planked walls, the countertop to ceiling tile, the 2” thick marble countertops and the deep grey tones of the cabinetry make the room intimate while setting a dramatic stage for incredible culinary performances.

About the Kitchen The kitchen presented by Morgan Creek this year is a minimalist marvel designed by architect Steve Kemp of Kemp Hall Studio. Together with an adjoining butler pantry and family entry, the kitchen creates the heart of this lovely Brookhaven home, recently remodeled by Berndsen Custom Homes with their usual fine attention to detail. Morgan Creek has always strived to make kitchens that break free of the ordinary and Steve Kemp’s design is an interesting blend of strict contemporary cabinetry set into a softer atmosphere of painted plank walls. By designing tall cabinets with matching horizontal planking, Steve minimized the functional cabinetry and cleverly concealed an enormous amount of practical storage. The result is a wonderful streamlined trio of functional rooms that do not seem crammed with cabinetry. Besides the oak floors that run throughout the house and the prominent stainless steel used in the appliances and island countertop, everything is unified in white--the walls, cabinets, subway tile, even the Danish pendant lights: all selected with the help of designer Suzanne Watson to create an environment for today that has peace and simplicity.

About the Kitchen This custom kitchen reconciles multiple conflicting design imperatives: professional-calibre function, family comfort, generous storage, refined materials and classical styling. First and foremost a cook’s kitchen, the space is outfitted with strategically placed restaurant-quality appliances, fixtures and storage. Yet the design also provides continuity with the elegance and comfort of the home’s interior architecture. It is, after all, not only a place for food preparation, but a hub for day-to-day family interactions. A subtle palette, high-touch materials and meticulous craftsmanship ensure generations of enjoyment and use.

About the Kitchen A unique concept was developed for these life connoisseurs who treasure their family life, world travels, and multi-cultural pasts. This distinctive kitchen is well suited for intimate family dinners as well as for entertaining hundreds. The kitchen was designed as three separate but integrated spaces. Materials like terracotta tiles and a stucco surround are used in the rustic catering kitchen. Sun-baked ceiling brick tiles and blackstained cabinets are prominent in the handsome bar-pantry. Aged silver-leaf details in the elegant main kitchen take you on a journey from rustic simplicity to modern elegance. Six stain colors, five countertop stones, and four different backsplash materials were used in this exquisite Spanish Hacienda Style design. A suite of GE Monogram appliances provide professional level cooking and food preservation. Old-world traditions of long and slow cooking meet today’s spontaneous soirees and daily gatherings.

About the Kitchen This family was looking for an update and better function from their kitchen. The design goals were to create a soothing space with quality materials and finishes. Simple details and timeless elements abound in this classic kitchen. By removing a cooktop and bulky hood from the existing island, we were able to open up the space and create better sight lines into the dining room and surrounding areas. A custom hood now becomes the focal point, presiding over handmade crackle tile and a marble backsplash.

About the Kitchen What a pleasant kitchen to work in! Made light, bright and cheerful using cabinetry by Schrock in the Pleasant Hill door style and white painted finish on maple, we continued the concept with Honed Olympian White marble counters and glazed white subway tiles. The new Wolf rangetop has a recessed niche behind it for frequently used items. A new large island with a handy prep sink provides much needed work surface. About the Kitchen Anne Cicconi took a kitchen that was very disconnected – huge distances between appliances and a floor plan that resembled I-75 traffic during Friday rush hour – and transformed it into an open and functional space. A highlight of Anne’s design is the unique double walnut islands, which Anne created by removing the oversized closet pantry. With this reconfiguration, a bank of tall cabinetry clears the main thoroughfare leading into the kitchen. Now, the cooking area is self-contained, and the main focal point of the room is a 2-tone hood design with a gorgeous metallic tile. Aesthetically, the kitchen fits in the Craftsman/Tudor inspired home like a dream – from the use of custom glazed and painted cabinets, to an amazing black granite sink and hand-forged iron hardware. Since her client’s favorite color is red, the final “pop” of color comes from the whimsical pendants and furnishings.

A MESSAGE FROM CHIEF TASTER DICK DENNY Ah, March in Atlanta. Daffodils, crocus, dogwoods, forsythia, jasmine, and even azalea in bloom; Braves playing baseball, Masters around the corner, pollen in profusion, weather unpredictable, and the High Museum of Atlanta Wine Auction. Spring has arrived, along with several dozen of the world’s greatest winemakers and a host of the best chefs anywhere, all to celebrate food and wine and the glories of a grand old time. This year will be the 23rd and better than ever because of two ebullient cochairs—both beautiful, vivacious and full of ideas for another fun-filled series of events. And brava and hurrah, one of them is none other than the publisher of our long time supporter/sponsor Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Gina Christman, the Queen of Bubbly, who knows her Champagnes. The other is the Ragin’ Cajun Angelle Hamilton, Doyenne of Red. Our co-chairs are poised to bring you all the fun and frolic and great food and wine and wine adventures you have only dreamed of. They’ve worked together for a year planning to add to past Wine Auction highlights. Once again, we’ll have winemakers pouring their finest wines, winemakers and chefs at in-home dinners, and, for the Friday Fête, five of the country’s best chefs, all James Beard award nominees, and all from the Southeast. It’s another grand prelude to a Saturday of stupendous food and wine, and a joyously raucous celebration at Atlanta’s greatest party—the largest charity wine auction in the United States for the benefit of the arts…all for our own High Museum of Art Atlanta. Join in the fun. Cheers, Dick Denny, Chief Taster
