THIS TIME OF YEAR, THERE’S PLENTY TO celebrate. Azaleas and cherry blossoms are in full bloom; farmers’ markets reclaim their ground; and clear skies and moderate temperatures prove conducive to spontaneous get-togethers. April marks my ninth year in Atlanta, but in that time, I’ve amassed a short list of springtime favorites: spending Sunday afternoon on the 16th hole at Augusta National during the Masters; a weekend visit to the Decorators’ Show House & Gardens with friends; and catching a show at Chastain as its concert series once again revs up. Equally rejuvenating is Atlanta’s ever-thriving design scene. This month, two area design-industry favorites, Susan Hable, co-founder of Hable Construction, and interior designer Barbara Westbrook, of Westbrook Interiors, release colorful coffee-table tomes (page 14). The weeklong Design ADAC brings together design titans from near and far for fresh inspiration through its series of events. And talented Atlanta garden designers like Alex Smith (page 44) make glorious gardens come to life. From fresh-cut flowers and long walks to porch-sitting with an ice-cold glass of sweet tea, here’s to a revitalizing spring!

W © BARBARA WESTBROOK: GRACIOUS HOMES, RIZZOLI NEW YORK, 2015. HALLWAY, PORTRAIT AND BLUE SETTEE: ERICA GEORGE DINES. BEDROOM: WILLIAM WALDRON
WHAT MADE YOU CONSIDER A BOOK AT THIS POINT IN YOUR CAREER? After working with a New York PR firm, a book seemed like the next logical step for my business. A seasoned book agent gave me the confidence to move ahead with Rizzoli, which was my first choice for a publisher. WHAT DOES GRACIOUS ROOMS SEEK TO CONVEY TO READERS? I want readers feel that the book is accessible, so that they can interpret our design principles in their own homes. Whether creating a casual or formal interior, I hope the book is both an inspiration and a reference for classic interiors. TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESS OF CREATING THIS BOOK. Atlanta photographer Erica George Dines is superb at capturing the feeling of my rooms, while writer Heather MacIsaac has a lyrical way of writing that perfectly conveys my thoughts about design. That made the process fulfilling. WHAT ARE THE HALLMARKS OF A WESTBROOK INTERIORS PROJECT? We strive to make our projects warm, comfortable and approachable. Regardless of the style of a particular house, our projects feel timeless and substantive. I’m meticulous about organization and details, so project designers Kim Winkler and Elizabeth Hanson keep our projects on track, while office managers Kathy Wedbush and
STYLE NEWS
Laurie Stephens ensure the business runs efficiently. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM OTHERS THAT’S BEEN FORMATIVE IN YOUR OWN DESIGN PRACTICE? I worked for Gandy-Peace and Nancy Braithwaite before launching my own business in 1992. Charles Gandy taught me that ample storage space provides optimal organization and that it’s a luxury in an office or a home. From Nancy Braithwaite, I learned that sophisticated paint colors have a subtle yet powerful impact on spaces. HOW HAS YOUR WORK CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST BEGAN YOUR CAREER? My work has become more organic as I’ve become more instinctive. I’ve learned to trust my eye and not be afraid to change things at the installation if something resonates better in a different place in the room. I’ve also gotten bolder with clients in my recommendations. As a result, I feel that my work has gotten richer and more sophisticated. WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR HORIZON? I’ll travel throughout 2015 to promote the book, and I look forward to meeting a broad audience that will bring in new projects in different areas of the country. I’m also thrilled that we will publish [e-magazine] Workbook by Barbara Westbrook online four times each year, with new ideas and inspirations in every issue.
Atlanta interior designer Barbara Westbrook’s debut book, Barbara Westbrook: Gracious Rooms (Rizzoli, $50) reveals her principles for creating homes with both polish and patina. Rich with advice, inspiration and classically inspired Southern charm, Gracious Rooms treats readers to a visual feast of more than 10 light-filled homes, including lake retreats, contemporary homes and historic mansions. An Atlanta design industry veteran who studied under the tutelage of Southern greats Nancy Braithwaite and Gandy-Peace, Westbrook is known for imparting a comfortable elegance into her designs, and her signature aesthetic is beautifully conveyed throughout the 240-page tome, whether it’s the significance of symmetry, using color to unify spaces or setting the mood with materials.

PHOTOGRAPHS BY RINNE ALLEN WITH PERMISSION FROM CHRONICLE BOOKS
A COLORFUL HOME IS A CURATED COLLECTION OF YOUR DESIGN STRATEGIES, AS BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOGRAPHS BY RINNE ALLEN. TELL US ABOUT THAT CREATIVE PROCESS. There were a lot of different hands involved in the book. Rinne and I had created a mockup of a conversation about color that we constantly have with each other, which incorporated her photography and my art. It was an artistic approach to a how-to. It is a book about color—but also a book about how to live with color and get inspired from your surroundings. Rinne and I have a million ideas together, and I hope this is the first of many projects. YOU ORGANIZED THE BOOK’S CHAPTERS BY PALETTE AND GAVE THEM ABSTRACT TITLES, LIKE “ARROWHEAD” OR “THORN.” WHAT WAS THE INTENT BEHIND THAT? It was a way to bundle these color stories. Color is different for everyone, so the names are a feeling to associate with each palette. “Thorn” is dedicated to reds while “Arrowhead” is a grouping of neutrals. There’s also a white and black section called “Salt.” There can be a richness and an intensity even in neutrals. HABLE CONSTRUCTION’S FABRICS SHOWCASE BOLD COLORS AND HAND-DRAWN PATTERNS. HOW DOES THIS PLAY INTO THE BOOK? One constant thing that has been there since the beginning is our fearless use of color. That’s definitely the backbone of the book and what people equate with Hable Construction. We’ve always been believers in making a space feel really happy. Over the years, so many people have written to us saying how it made them cheerful to walk into a room with our fabrics. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED REGARDING COLOR AND DESIGN? We’re learning all the time at Hable. The home interiors market
moves at a slower pace, so you just inject color along the way. I think that’s one of the things that’s kept me in the business, is that it’s always changing. There’s nothing we do exactly the same in our studio, and I think when you crave to learn and you’re curious, you don’t revisit things; you keep moving forward. Fortunately, that works great in my job because our customers are always wanting us to evolve. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE ADDING COLOR TO YOUR OWN HOME. When I moved to Athens, I had never decorated an entire home. I started breaking rooms down into colors to keep myself from feeling overwhelmed. I love to have many different colors from the same family in a room. Color is great for the spirit, period, and of all places it should be in your home. Let it rip; you live there. WHAT’S YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PLAY WITH COLOR BUT FEEL INTIMIDATED? The easiest thing to do is to have accessories in a color and to really step out of your comfort zone because those things can always change or shift. In the book, I talk a lot about art and bringing color to your home through the art on your walls. You can go at it little by little. Everyone has to go at their own pace. HOW HAS YOUR DESIGN PERSPECTIVE SHIFTED SINCE STARTING HABLE CONSTRUCTION IN 1999? I’ve realized that I can be productive and creative in a quiet place and that it’s actually better for my work. In my five years since moving from New York to Athens, I’ve picked up my paintbrush again and worked on my own art. I have a wonderful old studio in a mill village house and it’s very inspirational. If there is ever a time when there’s a lull, I paint, and I can keep those ideas for the business and vice versa. It’s a much better flow for me. hableconstruction.com
In her debut book, A Colorful Home: Create Lively Palettes for Every Room (Chronicle Books; $30) artist and textile designer Susan Hable reveals her fresh approach to transforming interiors through dynamic palettes and bold color selections. The co-founder of Hable Construction—a design firm she created with sister Katherine Hable Sweeney in 1999—Hable has put together a creative guide to opening the eyes to color and translating that discovery into compelling palettes and stylish interiors. Released this month and featuring rich imagery by fellow Athens-based photographer Rinne Allen, the 208-page tome leaves no coalor scheme unturned, exploring everything from subdued neutrals and crisp whites to bubblegum pinks and mustard yellows.

ABIGAIL AND WILLIAM PROPST HAD LONG ADMIRED THE HOUSE across the street. So much so, in fact, that one day they approached the owner of the 1920s residence and asked if he was looking to sell, and to their delight, he was. Although the home’s exterior boasted its original stately appeal, the interiors left much to be desired. Through the decades, the house had been converted into a boardinghouse and then finally a duplex. To help transform the awkward setup into a cozy space for the family of four, Abigail called upon her good friend Darcie Adler. Given their penchant for great design— Abigail is a fashion stylist, and Adler is an art director, stylist, set designer and founder of The Spin Style Agency—the pair left no stone unturned in creating a picture-perfect home. Renovations began in the cramped galley kitchen. “It featured these alarmingly bright turquoise Formica countertops, and the layout just wasn’t going to cut it,” recalls Adler. They absorbed an adjoining bedroom and knocked down a second stairwell to double the kitchen’s square footage while also making space for a family room. Aesthetically, Adler strived to create a balance of masculine and feminine elements. “William is also very much a figure in that kitchen,” she says, “so instead of keeping everything soft and pretty, we went with bold black cabinets and molding. It turned out quite striking.” The living room also got a noticeably glam facelift. To enhance the room’s light and bright charm, the red oak floors were stripped and refinished in a fresh pale gray, while the brick fireplace was replaced by a sleeker substitute. Adler designed a modern, oversize gray mantel with a waterfall edge for a dazzling focal point. The room—like the rest of her home—is filled with an eclectic mix of furnishings and accessories that are a nod to Abigail’s California roots and worldly travels. “With both of us coming from creative industries, we’re used to taking risks, and we approached the design of this home with that same perspective. We weren’t afraid to make a statement,” says Adler.

Back on Par Resort-style golf course communities are emerging from the rough created by the recession, with THE CLIFFS, a collection of seven private clubs and communities from Greenville, South Carolina, to Asheville, North Carolina, acting as the poster child. The Cliffs, which once had plans for a Tiger Woods-designed course, emerged from bankruptcy in 2012 with Arendale Holdings and now has buyers such as pro golfer MATT KUCHAR building there, says Robert Wright, managing partner of real estate. In 2014, The Cliffs experienced 190 real estate transactions totaling $85 million. Homesites range from $100,000 to $1 million, with homes from $400,000 to $3 million. Arendale, whose portfolio includes Toccoa’s CURRAHEE CLUB, a Georgia community acheiving golf accolades, has improved expectations. “We’re here for the long run,” says Wright.
ANNOUNCING THE 2015 SERENBE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE Let the good times roll! The setting for the second annual SERENBE DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE has officially been announced, and it’s a French Creole–style lakefront home in Serenbe’s Grange neighborhood. The 3,700-square-foot home is designed by architect JAMES P. CURRAN, who drew inspiration from the symmetrical style of the late A. Hays Town. With a broad wood-shake shingle roof, a timber frame and French doors leading to a spacious back porch, the two-story abode will “have expansive views from the moment you enter,” says Curran. Built by MONTE HEWETT HOMES, the showhouse will be open to visitors between September 11 and October 4. atlantahomesmag.com/serenbe
CONTEMPORARY QUARTERS Noted architect BOBBY MCALPINE’s freshly renovated modern Midtown abode has hit the market. Built by late (and great) Atlanta architect HENRI JOVA, the 2,100-square-foot, three-bedroom home is “the best of midcentury modern contrasted with Bobby’s aesthetic for a timeless quality,” says listing agent Marc Castillo of Coldwell Banker. Contemporary updates include Carrara marble countertops in the kitchen—a material that was also introduced in the master bath, which has new vanities, a steam shower and Carrara bench; hinged metal shutters; and a custom glass door that pivots.

AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham MY CHILDHOOD SUMMERS WERE spent in South Georgia, where outdoor living meant sitting on the front porch as the sun went down, rocking in a rocking chair or swaying on a porch swing. One hand was always busy, fanning desperately in an effort to cool down or lifting a cold glass of lemonade to take a sip. As steamy as those summer nights were, my family rarely spent an evening without sitting on the porch for a spell, whiling away the time chatting with one another and with a passing neighbor or two. It might seem strange today, but back then, talking often passed for entertainment. Times have certainly changed; outdoor living is now defined by comfort. Why sweat when you can have your very own portable air-conditioning unit—or better yet, misting fan—positioned alongside your swimming pool? Remember how scratchy and stiff outdoor fabrics used to be? Not anymore. If you so choose, you can cover your outdoor furniture in soft-to-the-touch velvet, chenille or bouclé, all designed to withstand the elements. It’s getting so that someday very soon, outdoor living spaces might become as luxuriously appointed as a home’s interior. What’s more, almost any activity that has traditionally taken place inside can now find its home outside as well. Install an outdoor kitchen in your backyard, complete with refrigerator, wood-burning oven and, of course, the grill, and you can cook all your meals alfresco. Why limit personal grooming to the bathroom when you can shower en plein air? Those outdoor showers, by the way, seem quite the rage these days. Even TVs can be watched outside, thanks to wireless receivers. Today, there is a fine line between indoor and outdoor living, but before we get carried away with turning our homes inside out, I think we should agree that there is one thing that is best left indoors: the toilet. The “convenience” becomes a major inconvenience if located outdoors. I’ve heard stories about those old-fashioned outhouses, and believe me, they are one outdoor feature that we don’t want to revisit.

Some places create great stories. Others make history.
Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with refined cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. Exploring pristine trails on horseback — or the locally inspired menus of our restaurants and spa. At The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, not only is history at every turn. It’s always in the making. Through the decades, The Atlanta Steeplechase has donated millions to local beneficiaries. We are thrilled to announce that beginning in 2015, the event will benefit Bert’s Big Adventure. Established in 2002, Bert’s Big Adventure is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides a magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World® for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. To qualify for Bert’s Big Adventure, children must be between the ages of 5 and 12, live in “The Bert Show” radio listening area, prove financial need and have never been to Walt Disney World®. Following the annual trip, Bert’s Big Adventure provides year-round support through initiatives such as the Reunion Adventures, the Fairy Godparent volunteer program and additional charitable services. The trip and programs create a community of families that establish lasting friendships with others facing similar challenges. Bert’s Big Adventure will host its annual spring Reunion Adventure for the families on race day. The partnership with Bert’s Big Adventure is a wonderful opportunity for the Atlanta Steeplechase to give back to the community. Knowing that our organization can make a significant contribution in the lives of the children involved with Bert’s Big Adventure is an enormous incentive to maximize our charitable contributions. The Atlanta Steeplechase welcomes Bert’s Big Adventure as a partner and looks forward to a long lasting relationship.

The 50th Running of the
ATLANTA STEEPLECHASE to benefit Bert’s Big Adventure April 18, 2015 at Kingston Downs, GA Dear Atlanta Steeplechase Fans, It is hard to believe that it has been 50 years since the first running of the Atlanta Steeplechase. I was 8 years old and so excited to be a part of the inaugural event. If you had told me then that I would not miss a Steeplechase for 50 years, I do not think I would have believed you. It wasn’t even certain that the first running of the Atlanta Steeplechase would be a success, but it proved to be the beginning of an Atlanta tradition like no other. With great pleasure, The Atlanta Steeplechase Board of Stewards invites you to the 50th running of the Atlanta Steeplechase! Kingston Downs will once again host one of the South’s premier spring events and Georgia’s favorite rite of spring in support of new beneficiary, Bert’s Big Adventure. On the third Saturday in April, thousands will gather at Kingston Downs to watch powerful Thoroughbreds and jockeys in colorful silks as they compete over a mile of terrain and hurdles for the prestige of $110,000 in purse money and the chance to bask in the glory of the winner’s circle. Beyond the thrilling rush of horse racing, the Atlanta Steeplechase brings families, friends and business associates together in beautiful surroundings for an unforgettable afternoon of fashion, fun, and socializing. The Atlanta Steeplechase provides a full day of entertainment so be sure to arrive prior to the start of the races. There are a variety of activities that appeal to people of all ages including the parade of the Budweiser Clydesdales, Jack Russell Terrier races, skydivers, pony rides, shopping and people watching. The Hat Parade & Competition is a crowd favorite and tailgaters show their spirit by competing for the title of “Best Tailgate”. 50 years of success is due to the incredible work of our volunteers, the support of our sponsors and the loyalty of our fans. Thank you to all that have contributed in the past and continue to make the Atlanta Steeplechase a success. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles for their partnership. Have a wonderful day at the 2015 Steeplechase! YEARS THE RICH HISTORY OF ATLANTA STEEPLECHASE “Good for cotton and good for racing” described the late John Wayt Sr.’s sandy bottom land at Horseshoe Bend on the Chattahoochee River, once farmed by pioneers. It was there on a hot Sunday in March, 1966, that the first NSAsanctioned Atlanta Hunt Meeting and Steeplechase was run. About 9,000 spectators came to watch ‘chasers vie over timber and hand-stuffed brush hurdles for the benefit of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Fewer than 100 Guarantors underwrote the $7,000 in purse money and enjoyed the first Tent Party. Picnickers and tailgaters experienced the usual vagaries of Atlanta springtime weather while establishing the gourmet food and eclectic dress traditions which are all part of Atlanta’s unique ‘Chase Day. The Atlanta Hunt Meeting and Steeplechase was held for five years at Horseshoe Bend. Both brush and timber races were run “backwards” or clockwise to deal with a sharp turn which sloped the wrong way, but the whole level track was visible to spectators watching the races. In 1971, the Steeplechase moved 40 miles north to Seven Branches, yet again a Wayt property. In 1979, the Board of Stewards changed the Hunt Meeting date from March to early April. Horses had more time for race conditioning and spectators had a chance for better weather. Hollywood celebrities, Polly Bergen and Hugh O’Brien, each attended a race during these years. By 1980, the race purse had climbed to $34,000. Attendance had nearly doubled from

the approximately 9,000 at Horseshoe Bend to 18,000 at Cumming. With the goal of having the Steeplechase benefit a local rather than national institution, in 1976 the Atlanta Speech School became the new beneficiary. By the 1980’s, Atlanta had earned a reputation as the testing ground of champions. Atlanta-owned, Census, a remarkable competitor, won the inaugural running of the Breeder’s Cup Steeplechase. He was the leading steeplechase money-winner in ‘84 and ‘86. By 1987, corporate-sponsored and private parties gained in popularity during this era, and the landscape was dotted with colorful tents. Atlanta’s premier spring fling was named Best Charity Event by readers of Inside Buckhead and other metro publications in 1988. In 1994, Atlanta prize money totaled $197,500, tying Iroquois in Nashville, for the richest race meet in the country at that time. Word from the Georgia Department of Transportation of plans for a road expansion through Seven Branches Farm forced yet another move, this time to Kingston Downs located between Rome and Cartersville, Georgia. In November 1993, the Atlanta Steeplechase Board of Stewards broke ground for the new Steeplechase course. Located on 435 acres on the Bartow-Floyd County line, Kingston Downs closely resembles the original course as it, too, is nestled in a bend of a river, this time, the Etowah River. 2015 marks the 50th running of the Atlanta Steeplechase as well as the first year the event will benefit Bert’s Big Adventure.

“The back terrace needed to relate to the pool space,” Smith says. Limestone, which borders the pool, was also used for the terrace. opposite An herb garden provides a tranquil spot for sitting and for gathering thyme, chives, basil, and oregano.
W WHEN GARDEN DESIGNER ALEX SMITH was hired to overhaul the landscaping of a Buckhead estate in 2007, he encountered what was essentially “a large, blank space” at the back of the house, one that was rife with potential. Guided by a keen sense of artistry and practicality, Smith was enlisted to transform this empty panorama into a series of distinct yet related outdoor spaces, which included additions such as a swimming pool, a pair of pool pavilions and a series of intimate gardens. “The hardscape is key to the design,” notes Smith. “It’s the bones to all of this.” Mindful of the home’s architecture, Smith and his team selected materials that were consistent with those of the main house. Take the pool pavilions, whose stone-clad surfaces mimic the color of the home’s brick exterior. Limestone, which prominently surrounds the pool, extends to the back of the house, where its incorporation into the revamped back terrace helps unify the landscape. Even the containers, strategically placed throughout the gardens, received careful consideration: Smith selected mostly cast limestone and Italian terra-cotta vessels to harmonize with the surrounding architecture. When it came to the plant selection process, Smith took
care to establish “a diversified plant palette that included evergreens, deciduous plants and herbaceous perennials,” which would flourish throughout the Southeast’s long growing season. “I was thinking of year-round interests and horticultural diversity, whether through texture, color, or scale,” he says. This variety of plants includes climbing roses, camellias and various cultivars of boxwood. The home’s height called for trees “that could stand up to the size of the house,” which prompted the addition of several specimen trees, including oaks and lacebark elms. Smith’s meticulous attention to the overall landscape even extended to the placement of the homeowner’s beloved peonies, which were planted at the back of a border to ensure that they wouldn’t waste precious garden space when not in bloom. Smith says he considers his work a success when “it looks like it’s meant to be. That takes a lot of careful thought and deliberation.” In this case, the project’s triumph was a group effort that stemmed from careful upkeep; Smith and his team are quick to credit the homeowners for their diligent property maintenance. “Our business is to design, build and maintain,” he explains. “When our clients do all three, those are some of our best gardens.” 49

W WHEN STEFANIE AND JIM ELLNER’S FAMILY began to outgrow their ranch-style home on a prime Buckhead plot of land, they had a decision to make—renovate (again) or rebuild? “Ultimately, they concluded that their needs would be best served by tearing down their home and building a new one from scratch on their lot,” recounts Harrison Design architect Greg Palmer, who also oversaw the original renovations. Once again at the helm, Palmer went to work designing an airy home that fulfilled the homeowners’ desire for large, open rooms with an abundance of natural light. From the exterior, it’s impossible to tell that beyond the front doors lies a spacious home with tall, striking ceilings—and that was exactly to plan. “The home’s roofing and massing was purposefully kept low-profile so that it appears approachable from the street and is respectful of the scale of the surrounding neighbors,” says Palmer. As their dream home began to take shape, the Ellners reached out to interior designer Amy Morris to complete their vision of a casual yet graceful home fit for both dinner parties and quiet family nights. “They were seeking something warm and inviting since they entertain quite often, but comfort was also a priority. They wanted to be able to put their feet up and relax in any room of the home,” Morris says. She achieved this with a combination of sophisticated furnishings, rich yet durable fabrics and a serene color palette, a formula thoroughly evident in the great room. “This space is very important because it is directly off the front entry of the home, so everything, from the colors to the textures to the furniture, is an introduction to the casual elegance of the house,” explains the designer. Indeed, layers of intriguing details and statement light fixtures offer guests a taste of the luxurious details to come. Perhaps the most important element Morris carried
54
throughout the home was a clean and crisp color scheme. Maintaining an all-white palette in the majority of the rooms allowed Palmer’s architectural designs—such as the foyer’s groin vault ceiling—to shine. To keep each space from falling flat, Morris introduced a range of earthy tones through upholstery and accessories. She turned to design houses such as Great Plains, de Le Cuona, Kerry Joyce, Rose Tarlow and Rogers & Goffigon to locate choice fabric colors. “Not all fabric lines have the depth and array of color that these do,” she advises. It’s this steadfast attention to detail from all three parties—Morris, Palmer and the Ellners—that ultimately infused this residence with character inside and out. “This project was unique in that the vision of the architect, the homeowners and myself was seamless,” says Morris. “Everything came together perfectly.” See Resources, Back of Book.

a built-from-scratch home, and the result will be nothing short of spectacular. Case in point: this light and bright abode conceived by interior designer Brian Watford. The homeowner—a recently divorced father looking for a fresh start—approached Watford with little design direction other than creating a comfortable space he could share with his two young children. “His old home was very much traditional, so here I wanted to create something
fresh, modern and a bit masculine,” explains Watford. “It’s honestly the home I would design for myself.” To that end, Watford infused the 5,000-square-foot home—designed by architect Greg Busch and built by Mike Hammersmith—with his signature contemporary aesthetic, jumping at the chance to incorporate designs of his own where needed. In the kitchen, Watford dreamed up a gray oak hood featuring stainless steel accents and hidden spice racks, while a sleek stone fireplace commands attention in the family room. Even the home’s iron stair rails were given special attention with a custom graphic design by Watford. These pieces also serve as a testament to the designer’s affinity for mixing materials. “Combining textures creates depth and intrigue,” he says. Throughout the house, Watford was also mindful to incorporate durable fabrics such as waxed-linen chairs in the formal dining room so that no space is off-limits to the children—though pulling them away from their bright, colorful upstairs loft might prove difficult. Equipped with computer stations, a drawing table and plush seating, the space may have all the trappings of a typical children’s room, but it comes across as perfectly polished thanks to a masterful mix of high and low in which furnishings from Ligne Roset mix comfortably with Ikea, complemented with youthful pops of color. In the master suite, Watford presented the homeowner with a sanctuary of his own. “I pushed his limits in here a bit,” says the designer in reference to the introduction of softer, more feminine touches, such as the statement chandelier and wispy fabrics that help temper the room’s modern verve. “This style was new to him, but he was thrilled with the final result,” says Watford. The client’s wholehearted trust in Watford’s vision for the home also extended to the backyard, where Watford enlisted garden designer Brian James Davis to breathe new life into the overgrown space. “Brian completely overhauled the backyard,” says Watford. “At first the client and I were thinking we should make the space clean and modern, but Brian played with more traditional elements that help make the space much cozier and more inviting.” If it’s possible to exemplify new beginnings, this handsome and airy home built on faith certainly conjures that notion. “The client was an open book, which is rare,” says Watford. “He was the best client you could ask for.” 69

IMAGINE THIS: You’re flying home from Australia, anxious for the comfort of your own bed, but a snowstorm prevents your jet from landing at your intended airport. What do you do? Well, if you’re Bono from U2, you agree to let the pilot touch down at Ireland’s Shannon Airport—but only if you can stay at Dromoland Castle Hotel, a five-star, 16thcentury citadel on 450 acres, encompassing a lake, walled gardens, woodlands, a spa, an 18-hole championship golf course and a falconry school, among other amenities. The fact that this was was Bono’s chosen port during that 2010 storm speaks volumes of the castle’s reputation. Although it was closed on the night of his arrival, general manager Mark Nolan recruited enough off-duty staff to welcome the U2 frontman and his fellow musicians. Nolan’s wife, Maria, even donated a shepherd’s pie she had made for her family’s own Christmas dinner to feed the unexpected guests. Now how’s that for Irish hospitality? “Sure,” you might say. “Of course the castle would offer the royal treatment to U2.” But the truth is, the staff will roll out the red carpet for you too—literally. There’s a red carpet in the stately lobby, as well as two suits of armor glinting in the light of crystal chandeliers. This is, after all, your classic fairy-tale castle, with turrets, stone walls, stained glass windows, coffered ceilings and crackling fireplaces. It’s the ancestral home of descendants of an 11th-century Irish king, although it’s been welcoming guests— including Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush—as a luxury, 99-room hotel for more than 50 years.
opposite Dromoland was originally built by the O’Brien family, descendants of an 11th-century Irish king. A bridge across the lily pond leads to the Temple of Mercury, which Sir Edward O’Brien, a former owner of the castle, erected in the 18th century to mark the grave of his favorite race horse. It’s said that O’Brien once wagered the entire estate on the steed, which fortunately won the race. this page A circa-1648 stone gate graces the entrance to the castle’s formal walled garden. PA S S P O R T THE DRIVE FROM THE FRONT GATE TO THE main house and gardens of the Biltmore Estate is a three-mile, nearly 15-minute journey across narrow roads that weave sharply across the property’s lush, expansive lawn. This leisurely, scenic route— aptly named the Approach Road—was intentionally designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to set the tone for a visit to the South’s most beloved historic and grand estates. Tucked amid the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, North Carolina, among 8,000 acres of immaculately manicured gardens, rolling hills, meadows and pastures, George Vanderbilt’s 19thcentury, 250-room chateau remains a testament to the enduring influence of stunning architecture (Richard Morris Hunt) and masterful design. And each spring, the setting of America’s largest home positively blooms, with thousands of tulips, roses, rhododendron and azaleas (and nearly a mile of sunflowers in July) beckoning and inspiring garden lovers from around the world to stay a while and enjoy the father of landscape architecture’s spectacular outdoor rooms. Beyond the formal gardens, conservatory and manicured lawns, perhaps the most essential activity is a tour of the circa-1895 home. The French Renaissance abode is a hallmark of château-style architecture (turrets, steep roofs, gargoyles, a winding balustrade and limestone columns) in which historical clothing, books, art and furniture offer guests a firsthand look at the Vanderbilts’ opulent lifestyle. (Self-guided or 90-minute audio tours are available.) The best way to extend a visit is to experience the nearby Antler Village, a collection of familyfriendly dining and retail establishments also located on the Biltmore property (and its newest addition, having opened in 2010), a decidedly more casual escape. Discover life as a Vanderbilt through an in-depth exhibition of the family’s history with The Vanderbilts at Home and Abroad; sample the Biltmore’s award-winning wines at the onsite vineyard and winery; or explore a more active means of sightseeing at the Outdoor Adventure Center, which provides Segway tours, sporting clays, hiking, biking and horseback rides. To truly get a feel for Vanderbilt hospitality, book a night’s stay at the Inn on the Biltmore Estate, which overlooks the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. With such an indulgent retreat within reach, you may want to upgrade to a weekend vacation.

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN TRAVELING ON a cruise ship was considered the ultimate luxury reserved for high society—a floating cocktail party that played out for weeks. Picture George Brent and Jane Powell flaunting shipboard elegance and indulgence on an epitomic scale. Life aboard a cruise ship has changed a lot since then. Well, sort of. Enter the next generation of cruise vacations, Quantum of the Seas, all spit-shined and glistening, ready to take over the spotlight of the Royal Caribbean fleet. With 2,090 staterooms and a capacity of 4,900 guests plus 1,500 crew members, you’d think the ship might feel a little cramped. To the contrary, its vastness feels like a small cosmopolitan city. The Royal Esplanade and The Via are at the ship’s epicenter, offering a collection of luxury shopping brands such as Cartier, BVLGARI, Hublot and Kiehl’s. Guests of all ages are treated to Broadway-style entertainment, live bands and performers, jawdropping special effects using advanced digital displays, and a multimillion dollar collection of spectacular three-dimensional art. The ship’s 18 restaurant concepts are bound to impress even the savviest of foodies. World-class chefs deliver multisensory dining on par with top restaurants in a major city. Reservations are handled via a smart new reservation system that puts the guests in charge of when, where and with whom they dine. This new vision in dining, as opposed to the main dining room concept common on most vessels, is called Dynamic Dining and is very much at the top of the Quantum Leap marketing initiative. Superfast wireless connectivity, a skydiving simulator and a Bionic Bar, where robotic bartenders expertly prepare drinks to order from a touch screen, are further proof that the modern age has arrived. Guests can download an app to their smartphone—called Royal iQ—from which they can manage every detail of their vacation during the cruise, including luggage tracking and reservations for dining and excursions. royalcaribbean.com

ON A SULTRY EARLY SUMMER EVENING, 24 benefactors of Cashiers’s The Bascom museum gathered for a private dinner at the stylish North Carolina abode of design-industry luminaries Hal Ainsworth and Winton Noah. Part of the Bascom’s annual Collective Spirits fundraiser, the evening not only kicked off one of the Southeast’s premier weekend food and wine festivals, but also welcomed an intimate group who share a passion for supporting the Cashiers community—and its visual arts center. And true to form, when it came to opening their timelessly chic home for the night, the partners behind one of ADAC’s most venerable showrooms, Ainsworth-Noah, left no element of entertaining unaddressed. “We tried to make everybody feel welcome,” says Noah. “Cashiers itself is a very welcoming little town. It’s a village.” Perched atop a mountain thousands of feet above Cashiers Valley, their vacation residence exudes a grandeur rivaling that of the surrounding scenery. Thanks to airy porches, floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors, guests sipped wine and socialized while enjoying the bird’s-eye view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Arranged with the help of event chair Elizabeth Rodriguez, the dinner menu offered light bites, savory entrées and decadent desserts, which were prepared by chef Chris Montero of New Orleans’s Café B and paired with wine selections from Maison Joseph Drouhin and Domaine Drouhin. To foster an intimate atmosphere, Ainsworth and Noah arranged seating at three tables of eight, where floral bouquets the hosts arranged themselves served as seasonal centerpieces. Never ones to skimp on thoughtful details, they also festooned silver julep cups, each containing small arrangements, with personalized place cards. “We wanted guests to feel special, like they were at home,” says Ainsworth. It’s this sense of camaraderie and ease that signified the night’s success for both The Bascom and the museum’s patrons. “With so many guests involved with The Bascom, everyone knew each other,” notes Ainsworth. “It was really more of a family dinner.” collectivespirits.com
Chef Chris Montero of New Orleans’ Café B prepared the cuisine for the Collective Spirits benefactor party at Hal Ainsworth and Winton Noah’s Cashiers abode. The sweeping mountain views provided a storybook setting for the intimate event, which benefits The Bascom. Decadent dishes like black truffle quail eggs, lobster ravioli and Ponchatoula strawberries served with Creole cream cheese and acacia honey were each paired with a wine selection, which guests indulged in while they mingled indoors and out.

A crowd of 600 gathered at the Cathedral of St. Philip in early February to get a first look at the 44TH ANNUAL CATHEDRAL ANTIQUES SHOW. Guests sipped on wine donated by Mira Winery and enjoyed a menu prepared by Soiree Catering and Events as they perused the show, period antiques, design vignettes and floral displays. The annual festival celebrates the decorative arts with a week of events including a flower show, tour of homes and noteworthy antiques show. This year’s proceeds were donated to Covenant House Georgia, a crisis shelter for trafficked and homeless youths in Atlanta. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROSEMARY TAYLOR

Intaglios
INTAGLIOS are having a moment. Old-fashioned in feel and grouped together for sculptural effect, framed collections of intaglios have become de rigueur in Atlanta interiors. Arrange them in a series, or place a single seal at the center of a large-scale frame, and voilà, you have the makings of a collection that may just rival your hanging blue-andwhite plates. At my last book club I almost fell off my literary perch when a friend mentioned she had become passionate about collecting intaglios since she had returned from Venice. (Me, too, I thought ... but I just purchased one on liveauctioneers.com for a cool $100). Another woman mentioned that she remembered when they used to be in style, and I couldn’t believe my ears. Have intaglios

ever gone out of style—was I napping for a decade? My favorite paperweight is a giant plaster-crested intaglio bought 20 years ago in Florence. My go-to handbag? Has an intaglio in patent leather. So why are they so universally appealing, whether tied with ribbon and worn around the neck or as a pinned brooch or as art? Intaglios are simple but refined, elegant but artistic. They may have originated as seals for important documents, but they caught on like wildfire, and the flame isn’t dimming. I am so smitten, in fact, that I am searching Etsy for an artist to create an intaglio of my daughter, Anabelle. She will die of shame, but I will have her tied in a choker for whenever I miss her. Maybe the artist could add a phrase in Latin or Greek. Something along the lines of, “My Mother Is My Goddess.” She’ll never know ... and I will have my own intaglio.

LETTER FROM THE 2015 ASA PRESIDENT & DECORATORS’ SHOW HOUSE & GARDENS CHAIR Dear friends and patrons, LET’S CELEBRATE A MILESTONE! WE JUST TURNED 45 YEARS OF AGE! The Atlanta Symphony Associates (ASA) is celebrating its 45th consecutive year hosting the Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, benefiting our beloved Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO). The ASA is a 250-member volunteer organization that raises funds in support of the ASO, and the Show House has become our signature event. What began in 1970 as a fun way for volunteers to support the ASO has become a highly anticipated Atlanta tradition that over the years has provided a net contribution to the Symphony of more than $6 million. In fact, our Show House has become the largest event of its kind in the Southeast and one of the longest-running in the United States. Wow! All proceeds from the Decorators’ Show House & Gardens and other ASA fundraisers go to support the ASO and its community outreach and education programs. Your participation and patronage allow us to continue this enduring legacy of service to the ASO and the greater Atlanta community. We are thrilled to share this year’s stunning residence with you for three special weeks. You know, Château Soleil is not just a house; it is an orchestrated concert featuring the most wonderfully talented designers, dedicated volunteers, supportive sponsors and you, the lucky visitors who get to tour the house and witness the results firsthand. Twenty-eight designers and literally thousands of volunteers have come together to transform a gemstone of a house into a shining jewel for all to see. It is très magnifique! As we celebrate 45 years of spectacular show homes and 65 years of volunteer and fundraising support for the ASO, I’d like to take this opportunity to say “Thank you!” for supporting this project with your ticket purchase today and your patronage over the years. Merci beaucoup, mes amis! Enjoy the tour and encourage your friends to come and visit us! Warmly,
Camille Kesler 2014–2016 ASA President 2015 DSH&G Chair 22

I am thrilled to be the Honorary Chair for the 2015 ASA Decorators’ Show House on the auspicious occasion of its 45th anniversary and hope that we can all come together to help support the ASO and the local art community.”

SPECIAL APPRECIATION The key to our Show House success rests in the creative designers who embody the spirit of greatness in their innovative designs. THANK YOU to each and every one of these men and women for their inspiring dedication and tremendous talent! They are the coolest people in the room, the folks with taste and pizzazz, and we are indeed fortunate to call them friends. We cannot adequately express our thanks to the dedicated volunteers who take time away from their work and personal lives to participate in this special project. This event is eight months in the making, requiring more than 2,000 volunteers each year. It is a vast challenge to plan and stage, yet unpaid volunteers have worked tirelessly to make this project a success for 45 consecutive years. THANK YOU! Particular THANKS to Melissa Hudson, Angela Lund Levy, Tom Torrey, Nancy Eichler, Allyson Kirkpatrick, Chris Sherry and Liz McClure. A special THANKS also goes out to Cynthia Pierce, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Atlanta Perimeter; her assistant Diane Black; House Manager Pat McTaggart of Altisource; and John Britti of Ocwen Financial for giving us use of this amazing property that we lovingly named Château Soleil. THANK YOU to all of our sponsors! We are deeply grateful for the businesses and individuals who so generously support this very special project. These strategic partnerships have helped our fundraising efforts to benefit the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and its community outreach and youth education initiatives. Through these enterprises, we are able to reach nearly 5,000 metro-Atlanta children every year, introducing youth to music through concerts, Instrument Petting Zoos and music education programs. THANKS to Honorary Chair Vern Yip for his vociferous and generous support of the Show House. And to Craig Koch, Tyler Thompson, Amy Soule, Brad Hanner, Gina Christman, Elizabeth Ralls, Claire Ruhlin, Lindsey Wohlfrom, Bill Baker, Steven Stolman, Juan Carlos Rosas, Rebecca Dumas of Gregory’s Paint & Flooring, Jim Callahan, Irina Clow, Amanda Neeley, Terri Wigley, Joe Tessmer, Josh Horne, Charles Carithers, Greg Rand, Miller Getz and Terry Holmes. We wish there were more space available to sing your praises! And last, but certainly not least, MERCI BEAUCOUP to all of the visitors to the Show House! It is said that if you build it, they will come. Well, THANK YOU for coming to see what this disparate yet connected group has built for you to enjoy. We hope you gain inspiration for your own homes and aspirations. And we hope you tell a friend to come and see us, too!

It was back in 1995 when we first opened Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts with little fanfare but big dreams. We envisioned a unique Buckhead shopping experience with a great mix of old and new furniture, unique accessories, imaginative displays, affordable prices and where every customer would be treated like a friend. It has been 20 years since that fateful April day, and we are humbled by the fact that since then Boxwoods has tripled in size, Boxwoods Home has opened to great success and our customers have voted us Atlanta’s Best Home Accessory Shop, Best Garden Gift Shop and Best Holiday Décor Shop. We thank everyone who has played a role in this amazing journey...our employees, our families, but most of all, we want to thank you, our incredible customers, who have made this all possible and proven that dreams can come true. HOUSE HISTORY
ABOUT CHÂTEAU SOLEIL
PHOTOS: MARY POWELL PHOTOGRAPHY
ABOUT THE CHÂTEAU SOLEIL Built in 1998 on 2 lush, landscaped acres, the Château Soleil, at 4701 Northside Drive, has not yet amassed a long and charming history, but it remains one of the finest examples of European-style craftsmanship in Atlanta. Named for its golden façade, Château Soleil evokes the classic French aesthetic for which architectural designer William T. Baker is renowned. The home is featured in Baker’s gorgeous book, New Classicists: American Architecture, and remains a sought-after backdrop for photography and film. The 14,000 square-foot home and expansive grounds provide a classic backdrop for gracious living and entertaining, welcoming visitors onto the property with its pretty side-placed driveway and impressive 26-foot domed marble entrance. With a large motor court and an inviting entrance, the sprawling grounds also host a formal terraced garden and serene walkways that extend to a striking saline swimming pool. Guests and family enjoy intimate family rooms and a separate library
34
and study, as well as a Versailles-inspired grand living room with a marble fireplace and formal dining room boasting 16-foot ceilings. Featuring six spacious bedrooms, seven baths, four half-baths, and countless shared spaces, the showstopping abode also provides impressive yet cozy nooks suitable for reading or enjoying peaceful respite as the sun peeks through a nearby window. CLASSICISM IN A MODERN CONTEXT: THE ARCHITECT’S CHALLENGE The beauty of classicism lies in its ability to transcend time and place and speak with a new voice in any context. Architecture that successfully demonstrates this versatility transcends many years and cultures, evolving to suit the needs of each new society it encounters. When the Château Soleil was first conceived as a house with an aesthetic that echoed French classicism, Baker worked with his client to develop an architectural program that incorporated the best of this
style. As always, the fresh interpretation of a historic style in a modern context poses distinct architectural challenges; the needs of a 21st-century household differ dramatically from those of one 300 years ago, and there is often a tension between the exterior façade and interior floor plan. This showhouse resolves these differences with a successful blend of the old and new. With a floor plan based on symmetry, the home’s primary axis cuts through the center of the house, beginning at the front garden walk and extending through the entry door to the rear lawn. Both the floor plan and the architecture ultimately cater to the homeowner’s enjoyment. It is a magic moment when an architect has the pleasure to work with a client of taste and means; when an architect’s creativity is combined with an owner’s zeal and vision, an architectural treasure is produced. This year’s Decorators’ Show House & Gardens represents such a moment and serves as a testimony to the timelessness of French classicism.

ABOUT ATLANTA SYMPHONY ASSOCIATES
WORKING TOGETHER TO CONNECT SYMPHONY PROGRAMS TO STUDENTS IN ATLANTA. THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
BRINGING MUSIC TO CHILDREN IN ATLANTA By Ahmad Mayes THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY ASSOCIATES
Quality music education inspires imaginations and ignites curiosities; many students and teachers find a renewed enthusiasm for classroom content through music-infused learning. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) reaches more than 40,000 students and teachers each year through the Concerts for Young People and Musicians in Schools programs, and more than half of these students receive free or reduced admission prices. Concerts for Young People has even been mapped to state and national curriculum standards and is supported with supplemental study materials and listening guides. Educators praise these powerful learning programs for their artistic quality and ability to inspire students toward a lifelong appreciation for music.
PROVIDING FUNDS TO ENABLE THESE GOALS By Camille Kesler The Atlanta Symphony Associates (ASA) connects potential sponsors and donors to our fundraising initiatives, which benefit the ASO. In turn, the ASO connects its members to the symphony and its community. It’s through this connection that the ASA and ASO work toward a singular goal to encourage Atlanta’s youth to experience musical instruments and the symphonic arts. We celebrate these connections and hope you join us at our beloved Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, now in its 45th year. Over the years, this and other fundraising events have netted more than $6 million for the orchestra’s education and community engagement initiatives. So many reasons to join. So many ways to connect.

RELAXED LUXURY “We were inspired by the late photographer Horst P. Horst and his photograph of the famous chinoiserie room of Pauline de Rothschild. We like to bring a fresh look to a traditional room in this 2015 show house—a classic, updated, fresh design.”
THE DESIGNERS AND THEIR WORK Parker Kennedy Living focuses on high-end residential interior design, vintage furniture restoration and product development. Their look, “Preppy on the Edge”—or Southern Regency as Lance calls it—elevates traditional interiors by using lacquer finishes and mixing textures and vintage details with youthful colors and patterns. The interiors exhibit Palm Beach overtones, and are fresh with a deep-rooted interest in the traditional.
