IS IT ACCIDENTAL THAT THE RISE of the self-care movement corresponds to the increase of 24/7 access to just about everything our hearts desire? Is the saying true that there can be “too much of a good thing?” April’s annual “Escape” issue might beg to differ. This month, we were invited inside the well-heeled walls of three popular Southeastern vacation homes, from Alabama’s Lake Martin and Florida’s Alys Beach to Georgia’s St. Simons Island. The residences (and corresponding locales) were so compelling, we never wanted to leave. In fact, that concept was the ultimate goal for a Frederica residence designed by Beth Webb and architect Tim Adams (see “Resort-Ready Retreat,” page 46). For a family of six, great care was taken to separate the private (and quiet) spaces from the ones designed for entertaining and friends and neighbors are always close by. Similarly, for a residence situated ideally on a peninsula-like point at Lake Martin, a second-home retreat by designer Liz Williams and architect Mitch Ginn takes full advantage of its surrounding scenery, of-

fering picture-perfect lakeside views from every vantage point. Closer to home, we explore other forms of escape: columnist Naomi Von Habersham makes her patio feel like an island resort by planting bougainvillea and upholstering her outdoor chairs in a China Seas batik (page 27), while Suzanna Hamilton explores the history of solariums (page 20). Enjoy this issue—our current form of escapism!

SUZANNE KASLER shows off the great room she decorated in legendary designer Lars Bolander’s former Palm Beach home for the 2020 Kips Bay Show House. “I had the pleasure of dining in this room with him and his wife, Nadine, when they lived here. PALM BEACH EDIT Designer Suzanne Kasler rewrites the Florida town’s quintessential punchy style in this urbane great room Written by ZOË GOWEN
WHEN COMMISSIONED TO DESIGN this space for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach this spring, Suzanne Kasler could not help but imagine herself as the client. “I’ve always wanted a house here. It’s where I go to travel and recharge,” she says. Allowing the legendary getaway town’s sense of place to inspire her design, she leaned heavily on the area’s most renown decor elements: rattan, white linen, natural materials and the signature Palm Beach Pink. 12
Photography by DOUGLAS FRIEDMAN
With those selections in place, Kasler wrapped the large (40-foot by 23-foot) room with the coastal-feeling Sans Soucis by de Gournay wallcovering. “It’s very chic and it blends effortlessly with all those elements that we knew we wanted,” she explains. “I had seen the Sans Soucis pattern a year ago in London and they translated the design into this white, coral pink, yellow and graygreen color palette.” The wall of built-in bookcases prevented Kasler from covering
each wall with the de Gournay paper. “This took a lot of creative thinking, but ultimately we decided to paint the bookcase wall one strong color,” says the designer, who decided to use Benjamin Moore’s Custis Salmon for the much delibarated wall decoration. “I study a lot of pinks and you have got to use the right one in the right place. This coral pink was perfect,” she says. “A room this large needs lots of places for everyone to sit and enjoy,” notes Kasler

who divided the space into three seating areas around a custom 10-foot long Hickory Chair sofa, a floating sectional and a rattan chaise with a smattering of slipper chairs and antique seating carefully placed about the room. After Kasler perfected the large room’s “architectural envelope” and satisfied her floor plan requirements, she turned to oneof-a-kind pieces to take things up a notch. A yellow-cushioned antique chair from the Paris Flea Market is carefully complemented by one throw and abstract art on the table behind it. “The yellow cushion was another big decision, but it turned out really well for us,” says Kasler who could not help but notice that throughout the show, people seemed to gather and stay a while. “To me that is always a sign of success,” she says.

BETTER TOGETHER
This spring brings a slew of new designer partnerships. Here’s a glimpse at some of our favorites Written by ZOË GOWEN
Soane &
Duro Olowu
Just when you thought that the British furniture, textile and lighting company best known for playful rattan pieces and fantastically classic patterns could not get any better, it did. SOANE has teamed up with Nigerian-born, London-based fashion designer DURO OLOWU and rescaled his tribal-inspired prints to smaller, more decorator-friendly sizes. Whether on Soane’s own pieces (as shown here) or in a room, Duro’s prints infuse modern madcap English style into any space. Available through Soane, (470) 355-4887; soane.com
SASHA BIKOFF FOR VERVAIN Bombshell NYC It-girl designer, SASHA BIKOFF lends her more-is-more flair to VERVAIN with the launch of four patterns. Drawing from her own life experience, one print was inspired by (and named after) her “Lipgloss” while another is named “La Discothèque.” The two pictured at left are “Favorite Things” shown as a wallcovering (with Sasha herself for scale) and the “Uptown Toile.” Available to the trade through Fabricut, ADAC, (404) 814-0102; fabricut.com 14

BETH WEBB &
ARTERIORS Acclaimed Atlanta-based designer BETH WEBB craved pieces for her projects that she could not find easily. Soon this frustration led to her collaboration with the well-known home accessories company, ARTERIORS. Together, the two came up with 34 pieces of lighting, furniture and accessories that suit Beth’s quiet, but tactile design discipline.

SOLARIUMS
Originally intended to shield plants from the cold, these light-filled spaces have evolved into today’s coveted, spirit-lifting sunrooms Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON
above “We put nothing on the windows to maintain the original Palladian style as conceived by Mr. Shutze,” says John Oetgen of this solarium from a 2012 Showhouse. right A combination livingdining space by Susan Ferrier maximizes views from within.

SUNSHINE? YES. Plants? Perhaps. Fresh air? Maybe not. Solariums have been popular for centuries as a way to enjoy the natural world without being exposed to the elements. When Queen Anne built her orangery at Kensington Palace in 1704, it was meant to protect her beloved lemon, lime and orange trees from winter’s chill. Today, that same room offers one of London’s best tea services, and the tables are still set under a canopy of citrus trees. In the 19th century, solariums evolved as homeowners began enclosing porches to gain additional living space. By the 1930s architects began incorporating them into Victorian homes as a way to bring light into those typically dark wood interiors. But how does one define a sunroom? Technically, it’s a room with only one wall attached to the main house while the other three are constructed of glass or French doors. Although few homeowners request a proper solarium when building a new home, many want to create the essence of one. “The idea of a room wrapped in glass is timeless and appealing, and it fits well

into the generational narrative of how we design,” says architect Andrew Cogar of Historical Concepts. Since solariums visually incorporate the landscape beyond, you can be quite imaginative with finishes and furnishings. “Install trellis panels on the walls or ceiling and paint them for a garden effect, and include outdoor sculptures, a birdcage, plants and flowers,” recommends designer John Oetgen. However, Oetgen also cautions that rooms should not be too expected. “Mere decoration is predictable; a space must incorporate objects that pique the interest such as art, books, sculpture and intelligent things that appear to have evolved in the room,” he says. There are no rules when it comes to the expanse of glass windows, doors and floors. While some prefer to frame the views and soften the space with curtains, others prefer to leave them exposed. “Some windows are like some people: They just want to be naked,” says Oetgen. Upholstered furniture and throw rugs create an inviting atmosphere and offer space to entertain or read while also adding warmth to the room. “For the potentially chilly floors in winter, we recommend radiant-heat flooring for either stone or hardwoods,” notes Cogar. Oetgen does, however, note two elements required in every solarium: “fresh flowers and a fully stocked bar.” Cocktails in the solarium soon? I’ll be there.

To Market, To Market Written and Produced by JENNIFER BRADLEY FRANKLIN
THE ATLANTA REAL ESTATE MARKET shows no sign of slowing down. “There’s still not a lot of inventory,” says Shanna Bradley, top-performing realtor with ANSLEY ATLANTA REAL ESTATE’s Buckhead office. That means that savvy agents network to snap up desirable properties before they’re officially available. For an in-town home that’s in move-inready condition, it’s rare for it to sit on the market for even 30 days. “Bidding wars, multiple offers and backup contracts are common,” she adds. Bradley finds that open-concept living spaces, clean white paint both indoors and out, neutral palettes and indoor-outdoor living spaces are universally appealing. While searching for the perfect lot for a custom home was once commonplace, “dirt has gotten so expensive,” explains PACES BUILDER GROUP’s
Jim DeLany. “Tear-downs seem to be happening less than they were five years ago. Instead, people are opting to renovate and add on.” Remodeling or purchasing an updated home can net buyers more bang for their buck. For instance, in Buckhead’s Kingswood neighborhood, Bradley says, “New construction houses are in the $3- to $4-million range, while older homes [with similar square footage] are in the $2-million range.” Plus, because of rising skilled labor and material costs, and the millennial preference for simpler, less cluttered spaces, DeLany has noticed that clients are eliminating unnecessary or occasional rooms—even in upscale luxury projects. “People want to build and pay for things they’re going to use regularly,” he says.
BATTER UP WHEN THE ATLANTA BRAVES play ball for their 2020 home opener on April 3, they’ll be doing so in the newly christened Truist Park, after title sponsor Truist Financial. Beyond the new moniker, there’s much to look forward to at THE BATTERY ATLANTA, the 1.5 million-square-foot mixed-use development. “As part of the continued evolution, we look forward to welcoming Aloft Atlanta at The Battery Atlanta, Savi Provisions and Silverspot Cinema in the coming seasons,” says senior marketing director Lauren Abernethy. Already this year, Asian food hall PH’EAST, Savannah-based candy shop River Street Sweets and Good Game, powered by Topgolf Swing Suite, are drawing guests and residentsalike to the development’s streets. Spring will also see the opening of Georgia-based brands ASW Distillery (which will have a tasting room) and Park Bench, a dueling piano bar. 24

Naomi Von Habersham BACK IN THE OLD DAYS, escapism usually involved reading fiction or going to the movies. For as long as it took to read a book or watch a film, one could fantasize one was living in Bora Bora, for example, or dancing like Fred Astaire. Today, however, we have so many more opportunities to get away from it all, both literally and decoratively. Travel is no longer the complicated affair it used to be, and thanks to fare sales and discount websites, it’s not always expensive either. Direct from Atlanta, we can jet off to Paris or Buenos Aires, and mere hours later be walking along the Seine or dancing the tango in the land of its birth. But sometimes taking a trip isn’t always possible, which means getting away from reality requires a little creativity, and that’s where escapist decorating comes in. This summer, while everyone else is relaxing at the beach, I know I’ll be stuck at home, dying from the heat and humidity and pining for ocean breezes. I’ve yet to figure out how to duplicate an ocean breeze, but I can make my patio feel like an island resort by planting some bougainvillea, upholstering my outdoor chairs in a China Seas batik and scattering around a few Amanda Lindroth rattan-wrapped hurricanes. Don a caftan, mix a Rum Dum and voilà! I’m transported to the Bahamas. I’m also longing to go to Greece, where I have never been before, but where the entire design community seems to have journeyed in recent years—that is, if their Instagram posts are any indication. Alas, no Greek odyssey for me anytime soon, but I am considering painting my sunroom a cool shade of white and slipcovering the wicker furniture in striped blue fabric. You know, loosely in the style of English designer John Stefanidis when he’s decorating on the island of Patmos. Perhaps my decorative role-playing may not be fooling anybody, but when you’re confined to landlocked Atlanta during vacation season, you’ve got to get away somehow.

IN THE MIDDLE OF BUSTLING MIDTOWN just a block away from the Fox Theatre, Lyla Lila—named after owners chef Craig Richards’ and restaurateur Billy Streck’s daughters—feels like an eclectic time warp. It’s evident in the crackle of vinyl singing sweet jazz from the 1920s, or in the barroom, where hints of the ’70s are present in emerald green walls, walnut paneling and mid-century modern furniture. And when you take a seat? Crayon-like coloring gracing the menu brings to mind the joys of childhood. Regardless of the age that connects best with you, the restaurant’s charm is undeniable. In addition to the barroom, the restaurant, designed by Smith Hanes Studio, features an elegant yet approachable dining room and private dining room. Plaster walls, blush-colored curtains and handblown glass fixtures lend the space a Mediterranean flair. Table 36—a corner booth providing sublime views of the restaurant’s action, inside and out—is the best seat in the house. The daily-changing menu offers Southern European fare with a Georgian twist, as Richards describes it. Expect to find local ingredients intermixing with fresh pastas and wood-fired meats. Pair the pumpkin swordfish or the crispy lasagna with duck and cocoa béchamel with a selection from the extensive wine list, which is heavily sourced from family- and femaleowned producers following sustainable practices. And, the presentation is all done in a bright and lively way. “We don’t want to take everything too seriously,” says Richards. “If you sit down in a polished environment and have something playful put in front of you, it becomes a little more relaxed and approachable.” It’s clear from the energy radiating from the menu and interiors that Lyla Lila is indeed polished and playful. And as for the era where it transports you: that’s in the eye of the beholder. lylalila.com

Picnic tables, pingpong tables and plenty of shaded seating make the Italian-themed restaurant’s quiet courtyard the perfect hangout for a weekend brunch. FOUNDATIONS & FLAVOR Polanco began caviar aquaculture in Uruguay 12 years ago, and today, the company takes care of more than 250,000 fish raised from eggs with genetics from Russia and Iran, the natural home of sturgeon fish. “We make the feed ourselves and go out in little boats to spread in netted areas as the fish swim in the river’s current,” says Casaretto. Their riverborn caviar is praised by chefs for its quality and consistency, “The color and size of the beads is key, but flavor is the most important.”
PEAK SEASON
Whether it’s served atop blini or enjoyed unadorned, caviar is a quintessentially epicurean experience Written by CAROLYN O’NEIL
A DELICACY, DISPELLED The word caviar is often misused to denote any kind of fish roe and it’s even enlisted to name that “Texas caviar” recipe made with black-eyed peas. But the true technical use of the term refers to the sought-after saltcured eggs of the sturgeon fish with genetic origins in the Caspian and Black Sea. As with Champagne sparkling wines or Vidalia sweet onions, caviar is a very specific product. Ranging from silver-grey to deep black in color, varieties include Ossetra, Sterlet and Siberian. Beluga sturgeon caviar was banned in 2005 to protect the endangered species from overfishing. “The great majority of today’s caviar is from fish farms,” says JUAN DIEGO CASARETTO of POLANCO CAVIAR from South America. “Most of the aquaculture is in China, so we are unique raising our sturgeon in the rushing waters of the remote Rio Negro in Uruguay.” 30
HOW TO SERVE Atlanta chef GERRY KLASKALA of ARIA often presents caviar with the chilled beads perched on top of just-cooked blinis accompanied by traditional garnishes such as lemon, red onion and chives, crème fraiche and finely chopped hard-boiled egg. But, Klaskala personally prefers savoring caviar solo. “To me, caviar is the ultimate luxury. Very few products can be enjoyed as simply as caviar. It’s so pure that it would be heresy to add other things.” Purists serve with mother-of-pearl spoons, and avoid silver as it can transfer a metallic taste to the caviar.
WHERE TO INDULGE Many fine dining restaurants in the Atlanta area, most notably Aria in Buckhead, feature Polanco caviar on their menus. Casaretto, who lives in Atlanta, says Polanco keeps a good stock on hand and is developing a distribution center here. He suggests caviar fans visit the company’s website to order directly. polancocaviar.com

Polanco caviars come from the Southern hemisphere and are harvested during their winter (our summer). After curing for three months with a fine salt from the Andes mountains, Polanco’s caviars achieve peak ripeness and flavor at the beginning of winter in the Northern hemisphere, just in time for demand during the holidays.

ALYS BEACH HAS ALWAYS MADE ITS OWN WAVES amongst the cluster of communities sprinkled along Florida’s revered 30A Highway. The iconic hamlet maintains unwavering architectural standards with its unmistakable white edifices that fuse together Bermuda and Mediterranean influences, making the perfect canvas for an Atlanta family’s idyllic seaside retreat. “You can’t help but get inspired by the natural surroundings and simplicity of Alys Beach,” shares Nina Nash Long, who co-designed the space with colleague Don Easterling of Mathews Design Group, the in-house design team for Mathews Furniture + Design. The homeowners, who lived in a different Alys Beach abode previously, were ready for more space and an interior refresh. Long and Easterling helped reimagine their new residence with an updated perspective that also felt true to their style and the area, incorporating white plaster walls and colors that reflected the sand and crystal-clear waters of the nearby shore. “We visited their previous home in Alys Beach and knew their style, but wanted to give them something fresh and different,” says Easterling. The large family frequently entertains, but they didn’t want the comings-and-goings of friends—not to mention their spirited four-legged pet—to deter the design from a dirt-fearing palette of airy hues. Long and Easterling opted for pretty performance

Long notes that, unlike most second homes, this retreat would not be used as a rental during the off-season, so they invested in quality, longlasting furniture sourced from Mathews that they could enjoy season after season. The free-flowing home was designed by Domin Bock Architects and built by Galvas Construction with a keen eye for detail, which Long and Easterling highlighted with a clean and sophisticated aesthetic circulating the home. Incorporating original curated art, including works by abstract artists Joe Adams and Paige Kalena Follmann, was a priority and thus sprinkled throughout the home. The kitchen mixed unassuming natural materials in the open space, like polished nickel, pewter and brass, plus a touch of handsome leather on the island stools. In the great room, a complementary assortment of fabrics, like linen, bouclé and velvet, add nuanced texture as opposed to distracting patterns. “We wanted it to feel tranquil, so we kept the hues very soft, using whites, pale blues and light wood tones,” Easterling explains. Venetian plaster, applied by hand to the majority of the walls and ceilings, ties back to the signature style of Alys Beach. “It’s a beach house that doesn’t scream Beach House!” says Long. “We gave the home a sophisticated feel.” See Resources, Page 79. 41

Designed in the English Manor style, the house “has to live and has to be comfortable,” says Adams. The paintedbrick exterior lightens up the residence’s footprint; the builder is Macallan Custom Homes and Renovations.
IDEALLY, A FAMILY HOME SHOULD CATER to all who live in it, but when the family is comprised of two busy doctors and their four active teenage children, creating a home that satisfies everyone requires a great deal of planning. Just ask architect Tim Adams and designer Beth Webb, who recently completed a lakeside house for this family of six at Frederica, a golf community located on St. Simons Island, where the family lives full-time. Together, the Atlanta-based duo worked creatively yet methodically to design a spacious residence that is, in Webb’s words, “engineered for a very busy family.” Because the homeowners wished for their house to be a destination for their children and their friends, Adams needed to make the house large enough to accommodate
Mitchell_Webb.indd 49
49
2/26/20 11:05 AM
their requests for a media room, game room, pool and cabana, and even an indoor basketball court, not to mention the myriad bedrooms and a workhorse kitchen that are necessities for any large family. But despite measuring a sliver over 11,000 square feet, the house feels anything but cavernous thanks to Adams’ sensitive design, which placed the activity-oriented rooms on one side of the house, the quiet rooms—such as the library—on the opposite end and an airy great room in the middle that connects both sides. “Because of the large footprint, I had to break the house down into components, which in turn gives one the impression that the house was built over time through additions,” explains Adams. Adding to this effect was the architect’s decision to base his design loosely on English Manor-style architecture, which, with its gables and tucked-back roof lines, gives the house a rambling appearance. 50
Frame Works above and right The kitchen’s layout and flow is a study in smart space-planning. Two islands provide space for food prep and dining, while a working pantry, butler’s pantry and bar are tucked away behind the range. Concealed storage—in the form of retractable slabs located in the backsplash on both sides of the range— hide spices and oils.

Point of View
Likewise, the home’s easygoing interiors suggest that they, too, happened over time, despite the fact that everything was carefully selected for this house. “The wife wanted a fresh slate, which meant that I was not working with anything pre-existing,” says Webb, who not only selected furnishings for their durability and comfort but also their ability to stand out against a predominantly neutral color palette. Textured fabrics, nubby wallpaper and woven rugs all lend visual interest, as do the bleached, weathered finishes that grace some tables and chairs, which have the added benefit of imbuing rooms with both a sense of warmth and age. Although Webb and Adams worked hard to design a comfortable, convivial residence, the house they helped to create has proved remarkably easy to live in. As Webb puts it, “this house fits the family’s casual lifestyle to a T.” See Resources, Page 79. 52
above “Keep it simple” was Webb’s mantra when decorating this house, particularly when it came to the breakfast room. Palacek’s rope dining chairs surround a Noir dining table. opposite Because the property sits at a bow in the lake, Adams took advantage of the site and angled the home’s footprint so that each room of the house, including this screened porch, offers views of the water.

M MORE THAN HALF CLEAR-CUT of trees and vegetation, this expansive lot on Alabama’s Lake Martin had seen better days. But owners Rick and Kara Kaldrovics, who own and operate Outside Landscape Group in Atlanta, knew exactly how to bring it back to life. Think evergreens for structure, maples for fall color and tons of ornamental and flowering shrubs. All told, they brought in nearly 200 trees. Stone walls enhance the verdant setting, defining terraced lawns that are ideal for yard games. “We created a very lush landscape,” Rick says. The couple likewise took an active role in the design of their new weekend retreat, presenting architect Mitch Ginn with detailed sketches of the home they envisioned. The result is a spacious cedar-shake dwelling with battered stone columns, flared rafter tails and arched gable trusses. “This house has a fanciful storybook feel that is reminiscent of European architecture,” Ginn says.

flanks a bronze hood with a rustic wooden edge that plays off of the ceiling beams and custom island base. A ceramic tile backsplash adds a touch of texture. “The color palette is very peaceful,” Williams says. Intended as a spot for family and friends, the house also includes a serene lowerlevel family room, stylish guest suites and several covered and partially covered porches outfitted with stone fireplaces, where the couple and their guests often gather to watch sports. Not to mention the waterfront infinity-edge swimming pool, which Rick envisioned from the get-go. Given the scale of the project, Rick and Kara were astonished at how smoothly the whole process went—something they attribute to the strong team. “It was an unbelievably fun experience,” Rick says. “When we saw it fully completed, it brought tears to our eyes.” See Resources, Page 79.

END NOTE
APRIL SHOWERS …
“UH-OH, I’VE GONE CALIFORNIAN,” I worried. On a recent trip to Atlanta I was caught in a torrential downpour that turned streets into rivers and left branches strewn about the ground. Atlantans remained undeterred and navigated their SUVs— another anomaly not found in Los Angeles—through the roadstreams and over the debris. While they plundered on, I contemplated staying home in this rough weather, like the Angelenos, who clear the streets when it rains. In 1973 Albert Hammond and Sonny and Cher sang “It Never Rains in Southern California,” and they weren’t kidding: It never rains in Southern California. For example, in 2018 it rained 3 inches in L.A. while Atlanta received 70 inches of precipitation. But I was in Atlanta for work and I had to venture out. Although some people drove too fast in the rain while others remained unfamiliar with using a blinker, I safely navigated my way to the covered parking lot at ADAC. After emerging from a day at the showrooms, I was happily surprised to find that the whipping 80
winds had diminished to a light drizzle. That night I sat outside listening to the bullfrogs in the stream as the wet grass emitted that sweet, Southern post-rain perfume. When I’m in California, I walk on the beach daily. The pounding ocean waves and constant wind are as good for the soul as they are the body. I’ve had many contemplative conversations with the mighty Pacific—an ocean that rhythmically packs waves reaching 15 feet high. While living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, we skied the Tetons every weekend—a mountain range so formidable that one cannot let thoughts wander while navigating the slopes. And, when spending time at our house in Highlands, North Carolina, we routinely hiked Whiteside—a mountain that provided a beautiful view (and aching knees). Regardless of the climate or location, I think Mother Nature offers the best medicine, the best church and the best inspiration. As for my ability to navigate Atlanta roads in the rain? I think it’s safe to say that I’ve “remained Atlantan.”

ABOUT THE SHOWHOUSE
A nearly 11,000-square-foot renovated Buckhead estate with California transitional design by Benecki, Linda MacArthur Architect, Cole Construction, Melanie Turner Interiors and SOURCE serves as this year’s showhouse. Set on six private gated acres, its amenities include a tennis court, new outdoor pool with a built-in sectional and fire pit, indoor lap pool, grill patio, sculptures, trails, and a basement with a wine cellar, spa/massage and exercise rooms. A new family room with custom iron windows appears as a glass box overlooking the backyard’s rolling terrain. The residence was designed by Harrison Design in the 1990s for Charlie Ackerman, the late business and civic leader. The design team updated the footprint with six bedrooms, six full baths and two powder rooms, and an emphasis on livable, functional spaces with luxurious detailing. Other new rooms, including a breakfast area with a scullery and pantry, a laundry and a mudroom, join an expanded master suite with her and his closets and vestibule showcasing Italian-made cabinetry. White Venetian plaster walls, imported French oak flooring and Moroccan tile in the rotunda honor the home’s Santa Barbara style. The exterior materials include hardcoat stucco and a barrel-tile roof. The reimagined layout and design choices by Honorary Chair Melanie Turner and Cydney Mitchell with SOURCE seek to provide a cohesive flow for active lifestyles and entertaining while maintaining intimacy and simplicity that is pleasing to the soul. The showhouse will feature the work of top Southeastern interior designers and the grounds will be designed by Land Plus Associates.

MELANIE TURNER Honorary Chair Welcome to the 5th annual Southeastern Designer Showhouse at this remarkably transformed residence, Villa Flora! It is a privilege to be the 2020 Honorary Chair, and I’m thrilled to share our unique spin on this 11,000-square-foot Italian villa that’s been reimagined with a transitional California spin. Together with Benecki, SOURCE, Linda MacArthur Architect, Jason Cole Construction, LandPlus Associates and a host of other talented artisans, talents and trades, we have transformed this 6-acre estate, both inside and out, for today’s lifestyle, from the newly expanded kitchen and master bath inside to a rear terrace overlooking a new outdoor pool and a spa area that is ideal for indoor-outdoor entertaining. Together with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, we have assembled an exciting roster of design talents from across the Southeast, and special events are planned throughout the run-of-show. We are also pleased to have the Atlanta History Center as the event beneficiary. We hope you will join us this spring, and

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY Atlanta History Center
Visit atlantahistorycenter.com for more information
Founded in 1926, the ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER is a community-focused, not-for-profit institution that seeks to connect people, history and culture through a variety of experiences and resources. Located on 33 acres in the heart of Buckhead, the History Center features hands-on history through award-winning exhibitions; the Kenan Research Center; historic houses, including the Wood Family Cabin, Smith Family Farm and Swan House; and enchanting Goizueta Gardens, interactive activities and a variety of year-round adult and family programs. Each year, the Atlanta History Center serves more than 50,000 schoolchildren through class field trips or classroom outreach by Atlanta History Center education staff. And everyone has the opportunity to "meet the past" every weekend through a variety of museum theater performances in our new signature exhibition, Gatheround: Stories of Atlanta. The History Center’s approach to storytelling creates a special space for
22
dialogue, discovery and meaning that gives rise to a multidimensional, shared understanding of our city. The Atlanta History Center has been on an accelerated path to enhance the visitor experience in every way. A newly expanded atrium has transformed the West Paces Ferry entrance into a recognizable and inviting entrance. Inside, guests enjoy the local flavor of Souper Jenny Café, as well as Atlanta-owned BRASH coffee. Its new museum shop and bookstore is a warm and eclectic space offering a unique twist on the traditional museum shopping experience, and features a wide selection of books, local artist items and witty Atlanta History Center branded merchandise. The new Atlanta Cyclorama and Texas locomotive experiences in the Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama building and Rollins gallery opened in February 2019, bringing history full circle and making Atlanta’s History Center a one-stop shop for history.

n 1996, Phoebe and Jim Howard opened the doors to their first store, Mrs. Howard, in Jacksonville, Florida, hoping to demystify the decorating process for their customers. The
goal was simple: to create a retail space that showcased Jim’s architectural and decorating talent, and Phoebe’s natural skills for buying, decorating and merchandising. With equal parts exceptional customer service and a well-rounded mix of furniture, antiques and accessories, the store was an instant success. Five years later, they added another store, Max & Company, which features a younger, more modern appeal. Now, the Howards

osh Pickering developed a passion for design early on in life. After graduating with a degree in architecture, he made the immediate shift into the world of interior design.
Following time spent in Texas design firms and then several years working for legendary designer Bunny Williams in New York, Josh established his firm, Pickering House, in 2016. Since then, he has completed a wide array of projects—large and small, classic and modern—all of which evoke a sense of calm sophistication that layer the client’s personality with uniquely sourced items and bespoke details.
