INSPIRATION OFTEN REVEALS ITSELF in the unlikeliest of places. Whether it’s a song that takes us back to a distant memory, a long hike that reconnects us with nature or a brief dose of solitude that allows the mind to wander, I find these moments fleeting but gloriously informative. For many in the design community, travel serves as the ultimate muse. In a recent interview with Suzanne Kasler, for example, the interior designer revealed that her collection of decorative textiles aquired during her world travels, from antique suzanis to hand-embroidered patterns, informed her most recent collection of fabrics and trims for Lee Jofa. Closer to home, our May issue explores the idea of escape—and how vacation homes satisfy that inherent need for respite. Former Atlanta antiques dealer Suzanna Cullen Hamilton, who recently purchased a “boot-friendly, tiny little Texas farmhouse” as a second home of her own, chats with area designers and architects (page 24) about the mindset behind decorating from afar—and for ease of use. On page 44, Robert Brown invites us into his family’s laid-back luxe Lake Hartwell retreat, which, the designer admits, “is about as rustic as he can go.” Take the time to indulge in some downtime of your own this month—you won’t regret it.

CHARLOTTE MOSS WRITTEN BY Jeanne
Lyons Davis
In her new book, Garden Inspirations, revered designer Charlotte Moss takes readers on a tour of her palatial East Hampton garden, Boxwood Terrace, and unearths ideas she’s reaped over the course of two decades. From maintaining to entertaining, Charlotte leaves no stone unturned when it comes to enjoying her outdoor haven— and the fruits of her labor. Here, the decorating doyenne shares the homegrown wisdom she’s cultivated from her blooming estate.
YOU BEGAN BOXWOOD TERRACE IN 1989 WITH LIMITED GARDENING EXPERIENCE. WERE YOU EVER DISMAYED? Gardeners are complete optimists, so I was never discouraged. I had a clean slate to work with, and that was exhilarating. I stayed on course by

THE ECONOMY’S UPTICK HAS made the goal of owning a second home even more attainable, while the desire to create a comfortable retreat for hosting family and friends has become paramount. Designers Kay Douglass, Suzanne Kasler, William Peace, and Beth Webb and architect Peter Block each devote up to 50 percent of their time creating second homes for established clients, so these experts have more than a few words of wisdom for anyone considering outfitting one of their own vacation abodes.

They want a sense of home, but in a different place from their primary residence. BETH WEBB: A majority of our clients say that their second home is where their real family memories are made. People want to connect with that sense of familial history. KAY DOUGLASS: Our clients use their second homes in different ways, so we design some homes for clients’ personal use, while others are designed as investment rental properties.
comfortably elegant lake home with a neutral palette and limewashed surfaces.
4 // “We wanted to create the unexpected,” says Douglass of this Alys Beach home; even the lap pool is stylishly appointed.
ARE VACATION HOMEOWNERS SPENDING AS MUCH ON SECOND HOMES AS THEY ARE ON THEIR PRIMARY RESIDENCES? PETER BLOCK: Clients spend just as much money on second homes as they do on primary homes because they’re just as serious about comfort and convenience when they’re away. WILLIAM PEACE: While the design aesthetic might be different for a second home, clients want to feel like they have the same caliber of furnishings, so they spend the same amount on the interior design. Sometimes there are art collections or specific design pieces that balance less expensive items, but the budgets tend to be the same.
DO THESE PROJECTS PROCEED AT A DIFFERENT PACE THAN PRIMARY HOMES? BLOCK: The architectural design process isn’t
really any different because we’re still creating a home, whether it’s a primary or secondary home, but what is different is the space allocation. KASLER: We find that people want second home projects to move faster because they typically have a certain date or holiday when they want to take occupancy. As soon as the architectural and building process is complete, we move quickly to get them installed on time. 25

because logistics are half the battle. We warehouse everything and install it in one fell swoop. DOUGLASS: The timeline can vary greatly depending on if we’re just popping in furniture and painting for a quick update, or if we’re building from the ground up and working through the entire construction process. However, we’re always aware of the client’s time frame, and we keep it on track for a seamless installation.

KASLER: We always wrap up every installation by purchasing accessories from local sources. Whether the house is in Africa or Florida or Maine, there are regional influences in the house that define the home to that specific destination.

ARE THERE AREAS WHERE CLIENTS MIGHT TRY TO SAVE MONEY BY DECORATING DIFFERENTLY? KASLER: People don’t want anything too precious because they want to enjoy their time at second homes and not spend time worrying about furnishings and expensive upholstery. WEBB: We are often given one dictate from the client: Make it bomb-proof. For example, we use fabrics that can take a lot of wear but aren’t the most expensive on the market. DOUGLASS: We mix high-end merchandise and infuse it with a bit of cash-and-carry. That’s the fun of it. PEACE: We use really durable materials that require less maintenance but look just as luxurious, so our clients have the look and feel of their
primary home but with the durability needed for large family gatherings.
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IN SPACE ALLOCATION THAT YOU SEE IN SECOND HOMES? BLOCK: Clients want as many bedrooms as pos-
sible to accommodate large family gatherings, so we frequently design homes with larger guest suites and multiple bunkrooms. PEACE: Outdoor pursuits require space to accommodate all the gear for skiing and snowmobiling in the winter or fishing and boating in the summer. When designing homes in the West, we allocate significant storage space for equipment.
WHERE WOULD YOUR IDEAL VACATION HOME BE LOCATED? WEBB: I can’t decide between Paris and Saint Bart’s, so I’d have to have both! PEACE: I’ve already got a second home in Montana, but I’m considering an apartment in New York because there’s so much energy and inspiration there, and I get recharged when I go back to the city. KASLER: I’m not sure of a specific location, but I would like to be near the water. DOUGLASS: I’ve got a house on Lake Rabun, which I love and use frequently. It’s great to have a second home that’s in such close proximity. BLOCK: If time and money were not considerations, I’d love a house in Italy because the architecture, the light, the landscapes and the food are amazing. In fact, maybe Italy would become my primary home, and Atlanta would be my second home! WHEN ARCHITECT RYAN DUFFEY of J. Ryan Duffey Architect Inc. and his wife, interior designer Nancy Duffey of Scout for the Home Interiors, were called upon to transform a family’s cramped kitchen into a functional gathering space, they knew a major overhaul was in order. “It was almost like a mental exercise,” Ryan says. “We got rid of the clutter that competes with the ability to live comfortably; we’ve taken a lot of the noise out.” To give the appearance of a larger space, the husband-and-wife duo gutted the room entirely, knocking out impractical columns and cabinetry and rearranging appliances to improve workflow. Recapturing the dead space that once bled into the adjoining mudroom, they installed a set of pocket doors to separate the kitchen from the rest of the home. Clever storage solutions, such as the open shelving that lines one of the walls, keep everyday essentials within reach while maintaining a clean aesthetic. Knocking the island—previously stacked to bar height—down to one level also offered additional storage space while, more important, providing the homeowners with a functional gathering space. “Now, the whole family lives at the island,” says Nancy. “They eat lunch, they eat dinner there. Since it’s all one level, it feels more like a kitchen table.” A subdued color palette and soft textures in the form of limewashed cabinetry, a wooden dining table and plastered, walls offer an earthy counterbalance to the sleek marble countertops, geometric cabinetry and metal window frames. To further streamline the space, the Duffeys removed the existing crown molding to create a seamless transition from wall to ceiling. “The shell is powerful, so the furnishings really pop,” explains Ryan.“The arrangement is nearly the same; we just shifted the parts, so the room became something that could be pretty and functional.”

ANSLEY ATLANTA BONNEAU ANSLEY III of Ansley Atlanta Real Estate closed 131 transactions and sold $144 million worth of property in 2014, and often those homebuyers asked him to recommend a builder or contractor. This year, Ansley, Harry Norman Realtors’ top agent of 2014, figured it was time to launch ANSLEY ATLANTA HOMES. The new venture entered in spring 2015 with about a dozen custom construction and renovation projects ranging from $800,000 to $2 million in Buckhead, working with architects such as Yong Pak and residential designers like William T. Baker. In March, Ansley’s firm moved into a new 6,000-square-foot building with interiors by Kay Douglass. Adding the home-building company to Ansley Atlanta Real Estate, says Ansley, had long been part of his plan. “I always knew where I wanted to be in my career,” he says. Seventh Midtown

Why are the hotel and conference center being added to the mix? It’s an amenity for the business community to hold meetings and an amenity for the community to hold events. Naomi Von Habersham I ENVY THOSE PEOPLE WHO COMMIT to second homes, because I can’t seem to make up my mind about where I want my second home to be. There are some days when it’s a warm climate to which I want to escape, but at other times, I think that I might prefer somewhere cold. There was a time when I dreamed of owning a chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland. It was photos of Valentino’s Swiss home that sparked my fantasy. I had visions of checked fabrics, eiderdowns, a smattering of Black Forest furniture and a pair of Saint Bernards. I was going to become “Heidi” von Habersham and wear dirndls. (I planned to skip the hair braids, though. They don’t become me.) But then it dawned on me that not only do I not ski, but I also don’t like snow for more than two days. Well, so much for that fantasy. In the ’80s, I was determined to buy a pile in the English countryside and hire Colefax and Fowler to decorate it. I wanted chintz, and lots of it—a William Kent table in the entry hall, rush matting on the floor, pots of geraniums on windowsills and books everywhere. This second-home fantasy went further than most because I actually hired an agent to show me some listings. That’s when reality sank in. Most of the houses were dark and dank, with dry rot to boot. Few of them had en suite bathrooms, which this American considers a necessity. It would have cost me a fortune to fix up one of these piles, and considering that I’m no Dollar Princess, I had to put that dream on the back burner. I’ve flirted with notions of escaping to an estancia in Argentina, a pueblo in New Mexico and a hut in Tahiti, but my fickle personality just won’t let me settle on any one location. Until I can commit, I guess I’ll have to make do with owning only one home. And when I feel the urge to escape, I’ll simply turn to my trusty box of Calgon to “take me away.”

Some places create great stories. Others make history.
Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with refined cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. Exploring pristine trails on horseback — or the locally inspired menus of our restaurants and spa. At The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, not only is history at every turn. It’s always in the making. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the sunroom of designer Robert Brown’s Lake Hartwell home offer scenic views. Many of the furnishings have been collected over the years, including a pair of sofas he purchased for a designer showhouse, and the circular end table that once served as the Brown family dining table. The mid-century chrome and deer hide stools are from Brown’s Buckhead boutique, Townhouse, as is the Auguste Garufi portrait, which is displayed on an antique chest.

LAKE HARTWELL HAS BEEN a near-constant presence in the lives of interior designer Robert Brown and his family. Not only was Brown’s wife was born and raised there, but the couple once lived at the lake full time before settling in Atlanta. Feeling a longing to reestablish a presence in the area, Brown decided to build a lakefront getaway, one that would serve as a weekend escape from the business of running both his design firm and his retail shop, Townhouse. With the help of architectural firm Spitzmiller & Norris, the designer has created a retreat that exudes both comfort and style. “This house was my attempt to do something casual, laid-back and easy,” says Brown. Furniture is arranged for maximum comfort, with chairs and sofas placed within easy reach of coffee and end tables—or, huddled close to a fireplace, as in the living room. Brown also employed texture, most notably in the form of whitewashed pine-plank walls, to emphasize the rustic setting, while carefree cotton and linen fabrics further impart an easygoing sensibility. The home’s neutral color palette was chosen with relaxtion in mind, affording the designer a departure from his workaday tools of the trade: namely, color and pattern. And yet, for all of its relaxed touches, Brown’s lake house is imbued with more than a whiff of sophistication. “This is as rustic as Bob Brown can go,” the designer admits. “It’s casual, but it still has personality.” Metal furniture, such as the sunroom’s chrome and deer-hide stools, strikes an urbane note, as do black-and-white photographs and contemporary accessories, all of which act as a counterbalance to the home’s more traditional furnishings. “I couldn’t do all traditional in this house,” Brown explains. “I needed a few modern pieces.” It’s the sentimental pieces, though, that ultimately provide the most comfort. Brown’s childhood dining table (minus a few of its leaves) now serves as an end table in the sunroom, while a toy sailboat that once belonged to his now 27-year-old son holds pride of place in an upstairs sitting room. “It makes you feel good to have those old things around you,” Brown says. “Hopefully we’ll pass these pieces on to our children.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Although Brown admits that most of their family’s weekend meals involve “wine and cheese or pizza on the sunroom sofas,” the nook off of the kitchen provides a more formal dining option. The upholstered iron bench is by Oly Studio (available at Townhouse), while the dining chairs are from Holland & Company. opposite The kitchen’s pineplank walls convey a casual attitude, as do the open shelving and sconces from Restoration Hardware. Brown’s wife took the blackand-white photographs while on vacation in San Francisco.

Honeymoon, Jimmy Stanton and Patrick Greco’s newest home away from home, stands on five-plus acres of land just one mile from downtown
Madison, Georgia. The antebellum residence— the second the pair has purchased in this charming town an hour from Atlanta—belies its contemporary interiors.

UNSTOPPABLE SHOP OWNER AND DESIGNER Jimmy Stanton, whose Huff Road showroom now boasts nearly 14,000 square feet, has a deep affection for city life in Atlanta. But his heart is likewise divided by his love for Honeymoon, an 1831 Greek Revival manse situated mere steps away from the main thoroughfare of Madison, Georgia, and conveniently sited a one-mile walk from town. It was one year ago that he and partner Patrick Greco acquired the four-bedroom residence, the longtime estate of heirs to the Coca-Cola fortune. But Stanton was initially more interested in what the previous owners left behind: rustic relics filling “Sadie’s house,” the cottage of the family’s maid until about 1947.
Unearthing such a treasure—which happened to blend with his signature aesthetic—might be described as a happy accident. After touring one disappointing Madison property, Stanton and Greco were surprised by an unexpected offer from their real estate agent: a buyer had fallen in love with their existing Madison abode, thanks to a 2011 feature on the pages of this magazine. The pair accepted the offer on a whim, but found themselves wondering, “We’ve sold our house; now what are we going to do?’” Stanton says. Though the duo had been happily ensconced in their one-bedroom charmer for years, they’d quietly desired more space, especially for entertaining and hosting guests. The agent quickly suggested a tour of Honeymoon, and the rest is history. 57

above and below One of the home’s two main living rooms is a study in soft khaki featuring an eye-catching ikat rug and richly finished bobbin chairs that positively pop against the neutral backdrop.
“When we walked through the door, we knew, immediately, this was the house,” Stanton remembers of the immaculately maintained landmark. “It was just so different from the others we’d looked at; it was so bright and airy.” Stanton eventually outfitted its towering windows with his favorite wooden blinds. As for walls, he painted each room a single, calming color (ceiling and trim included) for a cozy, enrobing effect, while other spaces received conversation-sparking Cole & Son wallpapers. But not every one of Stanton’s home improvements proved so simple. The custom lanterns he had originally chosen for the front facade didn’t make the cut due to historic preservation ordinances, and other exterior enhancements were subject to equally stringent code restrictions. Indoors, the symmetrical architecture proved much more manageable. Only the formerly claustrophobic kitchen called for significant alterations. Stanton assembled it anew from Ikea components, plus a few custom pieces, such as a rollaway island crowned with a speckled Belgian bluestone top. Stanton’s go-to craftsman also fashioned the dining table from bleached pecky cypress and weathered zinc, while most other furnishings and accessories—ranging from Lee Industries dining chairs to Aerin lighting—were culled from Stanton Home Furnishings. The showhouse veteran, in fact, installed everything in the main house (save the kitchen) in one day with assembly-line precision, employing proportional floor plans that make the deceptively large rooms appear intimate and inviting. “I wanted traditional, but a fresher, more modern take; that’s why I love the big, exaggerated Audubon prints,” Stanton says of his nod to nature near the front door—fitting, since they speak to the abundance of wildlife on the property. He and Greco sometimes spot deer, raccoons and other critters foraging for blueberries, pomegranates, pears and

other exotic fruits. Stanton and Greco enjoy the land every bit as much as the resident fauna. Theirs is a vast yard dotted with fire pits (perfect for nocturnal gatherings with friends) and hammocks, where Greco enjoys whiling away the afternoons with a book, basking in the shade of pecan trees cultivated by neighboring Pennington Seed. Never one to underestimate the restorative benefits of a more leisurely ZIP code, Stanton notes that the added time to disconnect in Madison actually allows him to get more accomplished back home in Atlanta. And that’s good news for someone as busy as he is. “I cannot wait until summer,” he says enthusiastically. “Sadie’s house, which has four rooms, will be our next [renovation] project.” With the completion of the ancillary dwelling, the pair will likely create even more space to host family and friends. And what could be better than sharing their labor of love with, well, everyone they love? See Resources, Back of Book. 61

Renovating the former maid’s residence, affectionally called “Sadie’s house,” is next on the duo’s punch list. A gravel floor and a few other fresh updates make the carriage house ideal for casual gatherings. A pair of strategically placed hammocks have become a favorite spot to while away the afternoon, says Greco.

SUMMIT
At the 2014 Cashiers Designer Showhouse, a talented group of designers and landscapers paid homage to the surrounding views of Whiteside Mountain with memorable textiles, fresh color and stylish accessories. Sited on 29 acres in Cashiers, North Carolina, this charming home was an ode to timeless Southern style. WRITTEN BY Lori

Palette Perspective LYNN MONDAY, MONDAY’S HOUSE OF DESIGN // GREAT ROOM PORCH Keeping the surrounding views in mind, Lynn Monday designed this porch for dining alfresco. Drawn to the fresh look of a blue-and-white palette, Monday employed a mix of blue-and-white porcelain and faux bois plates from Keven Hawkins to fashion a tablescape that suited the casual setting. Box pleats and Samuel & Sons tassels dress up the custom Kravet drapes (pulled back to reveal the mountain’s majesty) and trim, while a Ralph Lauren lantern adds interest. 66

Fresh Face, New Space MAXINE AND JEFF SIKES, BUMPKINS CHARACTER FOR THE HOME // KITCHEN Inspired by the colors reflecting off Whiteside Mountain, Maxine and Jeff Sikes, both of Cashiers, North Carolina, covered an existing reclaimed pine island with Benjamin Moore’s Gray Mountain. To complement this palette, the duo selected silver pearl granite countertops from Oldcastle and a Carrara backsplash sourced through Interceramic. Meanwhile, glazed cabinets contrast with an acid-washed steel hood from Raw Urth Designs and an antique tin sited atop a custom table. Upholstered chairs from Bumpkins gather around the industrial kitchen table, above which hang wine orbs that were cleverly converted into stylish chandeliers. 71

Outside In CAROLE WEAKS, C. WEAKS INTERIORS INC. // GREAT ROOM Carole Weaks designed the great room as if it were a room in her own house, keeping the landscape as a central feature. Weaks complemented the sunny views outside with a chartreuse and white Nina Campbell drapery fabric, tying in the color scheme with finishing touches such as the foxglove centerpiece, hostas and art above the mantel. A frequent comment by visitors: They wanted the room in their own home. “After doing dozens and dozens of showhouses over the years, those are always the words you love to hear, says the Atlanta-based designer.

A Restful Retreat PATRICIA MCLEAN INTERIORS INC. // MASTER BEDROOM Patricia McLean enveloped the master bedroom in the Ian Sanderson’s Poppinjay Collection, using the rustic, vintage-inspired textile on the bedspread, draperies and vanity skirt. “I’m a fabric girl,” says the Atlanta-based designer, who also used the handblock printed fabric to mat a selection of English prints to evoke a sense of coziness. An antique bench and desk chair add an eclectic flair, joining Edgar-Reeves lamps, Chelsea Editions nightstands, a Moattar rug, Stanford club chairs and, in the adjoining master bathroom, also of her design, Peacock Alley bath linens.

Natural Selection JOAN ANDERSON, THE HORNED PUFFIN // VERANDA Inspired by the beauty of the home’s surrounding gardens, Cashiers-based Joan Anderson designed iron consoles, a love seat and side tables for the front veranda that were hand-forged by Hammered Iron Works. For a natural appeal, maidenhair ferns rest on consoles that are topped with Pierre Brune limestone. Nina Campbell and Osborne & Little fabrics carry the floral motif onto the porch, which houses old-world-style Anamese planters and flowers from Fiddlehead Designs.

Tailored Traditional TODD RICHESIN, TODD RICHESIN INTERIORS // GUEST BEDROOM “I wanted this room to be ‘area appropriate,’” says Todd Richesin of the upstairs bedroom. Yet he didn’t want a predictable fern and pine tree motif. A past client’s affinity for Lee Jofa’s Fox Hollow fabric inspired the designer to use the wildlife print for the curtains and pillows (with Sferra bedding to complement). Artwork and antiques sourced from Richesin’s Tennessee-based stores—Knoxville’s Upstairs at Todd Richesin Interiors and Sweetwater’s Bobby Todd—join a Chinese rug and a chair covered in Tien velvet fabric from Brunschwig & Fils. 75

The pair also upholstered a Bjork Studio bed in the same pattern and continued the family connection with McLaurin’s Elena fabric (named after Clay’s grandmother) on the pillows. Kravet velvet lounge chairs from Bjork Studio and a rawhide-covered desk from Bungalow Classic are an unexpected yet refined touch, while framed watercolor feathers by Atlanta artist Adam Vettraino finish the look.

When selecting the fabrics and trims, Morris turned to Zimmer + Rohde, whose unique patterns strike the balance between new design and traditional appeal. A sofa by Edward Ferrell/Lewis Mittman offers a comfortable sitting area, while a coffee table by Paul Ferrante and a Therien & Co. wood desk counterbalance the room’s softness. 77

QUATREFOIL
I’VE ALWAYS FANCIED myself as somewhat of a sophisticated interior designer, but I must admit that until I bought an armoire at Scott’s last month, I was not exactly aware that the four-leaf motif known as the quatrefoil was part and parcel of the very history of architecture (and, by default, furniture). Yes, I have been unwittingly in love with the design through the years, but its lengthy history and precise moniker, well, escaped me. (Who knew?) Now that I’m so intimately aware of the name— and the power—of a design so deceptively simple and classic, I think it’s safe to say that I’m seeing qua-

trefoil everywhere. In fact, I recently found myself dreaming in quatrefoils. Popularized during the Renaissance (how’s that for standing the test of time?), the quatrefoil today continues to adorn fabric, wallpaper, furniture and planters. And, fun fact: Even House Parts says they can whip me up some plaster casts for my new pad in New Orleans. (Until they arrive, I may be forced to once again employ my handy but perilous 11foot ladder to handpaint the gold-on-gold quatrefoil motif in my upstairs bathroom.) Who wouldn’t risk life and limb for such a project? I’m of the camp that this quatrefoil mural will be worth every breath—even if it is my last—because my guests will positively swoon ... probably at least four times.
