SUMMER! WE COULDN’T THINK OF A BETTER WAY to ring in the sunny season than with an issue devoted entirely to designers who have incorporated happy hues into the lives of their clients. Blue-and-white (my personal favorite!), lovely lilac, aqua, coral and blue-grey—are all presented in a manner that’s not just inviting but wholly sophisticated. It’s no secret that summer is my favorite season of the year. In our family, we have fewer commitments, which means more time spent at the pool, more time to enjoy a popsicle outside, and the permission to curl up with a good book—or sit al fresco with a cocktail garnished with herbs from the garden and simply letting the mind wander. Take the time to indulge in the colors of the season, and embrace the hues that mke you happy in your own life. Cheers!

CLEAN & CALM

Unexpected design elements turn an Atlanta kitchen into a multigenerational entertaining space. WRITTEN BY Lori

Johnston

STYLED BY

PHOTOGRAPHED BY

LOOKING BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL work triangle, kitchen designer Mary Kathryn Timoney of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio created multiple prep and cooking zones for an Atlanta family and their guests. One island was designed for specifically for meal prep, while the other has the ability to function as a buffet. To accommodate the homeowners’ affinity for cooking with intense spices and at high temperatures, the design team selected state-of-the-art appliances, a custom vent hood, and quartzite and granite countertops durable enough to withstand stains and scratches. When it came to aesthetics, however, Timoney, along with Karen Ferguson, director of the interiors studio for Harrison Design, were careful to remain cautious of overstimulating the senses, opting for transitional designs without unnecessary embellishments—down to the fuss-free legs on the island and Wolf range. Mixed materials—such as matte ceramic tile, a stainless steel vent hood with a polished nondirectional finish, brushed granite perimeter countertops and polished quartzite island countertops—were kept monochromatic to fit with the room’s air of simplicity, while wood ceiling beams are a nod to the home’s English architecture. “As a result, it’s peaceful,” Timoney says. “You don’t have to have massive, dramatic contrasts. The fact that it’s calm makes it very inviting. It makes you want to stay.”

Despite originally living in the West, the homeowners called the East Coast home for years before deciding to settle in Idaho, closer to their children and grandchildren. AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham AS DOROTHY DRAPER ONCE WROTE in her 1939 tome, Decorating Is Fun!, “The Drab Age is over. Color is coming into its own again.” Now, I can’t say that we’ve been living in the Drab Age over the last few years, but Draper’s remark about color coming into its own certainly rings true in 2016. Color seems to be creeping into the homes of even the most die-hard neutralists, and I, for one, am tickled pink. As a true-blue color lover, I can’t imagine life without clear, vibrant color. Of course, I admire neutral palettes, too, especially those seen in the work of design legend Billy Baldwin. Who knew that taupe and sand could have such flair? But sometimes neutrals just won’t do. Take The Greenbrier, the Dorothy Draper–decorated resort in West Virginia. Don’t you think it would be, well, a little less dazzling without those turquoiseand-white striped walls, bottle-green carpet and cabbagerose chintz? Or what about Easter eggs? How sad and mundane they would look without their colorfully dyed shells. And would Ladurée macarons send us into a reverie if they didn’t come in those luscious shades—not to mention flavors—of pistachio, lavender and raspberry? I think not. In fact, color is what distinguishes much of what we consider legendary. I would argue that Nancy Lancaster’s butter yellow drawing room, Dorothy’s ruby slippers and the Tiffany blue box have all achieved icon status thanks in part to their distinctive colors. The same could be said of the classic navy pea coat, anything in Hermès orange and, of course, those red soles of Christian Louboutin shoes. And specific colors become so identified with certain individuals that we can’t imagine one without the other. Designer Elsa Schiaparelli is still remembered for her signature shade, shocking pink, while couturier Valentino will always be known for his use of that flattering Valentino red. So, you see, life without color would be one continuous Drab Age. But perhaps Draper extolled its virtues best: “I firmly believe that nothing contributes so much to the beauty of this world as color.”

THIS BEAUTIFULLY APPOINTED FAMILY HOME on a quiet Atlanta street didn’t start out as Shayelyn Woodbery’s dream home. The turnkey house was being built as a business project between Shayelyn, an interior designer, and her husband, David, a developer and founder of The Woodbery Group. Eventually overcome by the charms of the neighborhood and the lot’s lush one-acre setting, the couple decided midconstruction to turn the house into a personalized home for their family of four. Now tasked with creating a more meaningful space, Shayelyn knew just where to look for ideas. Having recently traveled to Morocco for her and David’s wedding anniversary, she began to pore over photos from their visit to the exotic destination. “I was really moved on the trip, almost in a spiritual manner,” she recalls. “People often associate Morocco with vibrant, punchy color, but I was more taken by all the ancestral patterns. There’s a wonderful simplicity to them.”

Woodberry.indd 51

51

4/29/16 2:40 PM

Pulling from this inspiration, Shayelyn incorporated layers of pattern in each room, from a graphic spades fabric in her daughter’s bedroom to the geometric lace-patterned tile in the master bath. In the family room, custom cabinet panels are accented with traditional eight-pointed Moroccan stars. The designer also took a cue from the region’s architecture, adding radius corners to the tops of the entryways. Originally intended to be square, the archways now add to the home’s worldly sophistication. In Shayelyn’s interpretation of Moroccan design, she used a pared-down palette of light grays, soft whites, camels and golds, effectively allowing the patterns to take the spotlight. “I’ve always been drawn to neutral colors,” says the designer. “To me, intense color can be distracting, whereas soft and simple colors create a sense of calm while allowing a room’s more interesting elements to shine.” However, Shayelyn certainly wasn’t afraid to play up the drama of bolder color when appropriate. To augment the dining room’s small and intimate proportions, she selected a deep, rich gray for the walls that was custom matched to the Jim Thompson drapery fabric, resulting in a cozy, cocoonlike effect. Similarly, a dusky agate-inspired Kelly Wearstler fabric repeated throughout David’s home office makes for an ultrahandsome space. “I wanted this home to have a vibe of elegance with a little sexy,” says Shayelyn. “We’ve moved a lot, and people often ask me if all of our homes have looked the same, but my style continues to evolve as I get older. I’m now in my mid-40s, and this home is a reflection of that. “But I think I go through a style revival every seven years. Plus, my husband is a developer,” she teases, leaving the door open for another dream home in the future. See Resources, Back of Book. 52

WHEN INTERIOR DESIGNER Mallory Mathison Glenn was tasked with decorating a 14,000-square-foot blank canvas, the spirited designer, known for her pretty punches of color, was more than ready to bring the homeowners’ colorful vision to life in their vast Buckhead estate. With its thoughtful design by architect Jim Viviano from 5G Studio and detailed craftsmanship by builder Neil Johnson of Canonbury Homes, the six-bedroom domicile is rooted in tradition and brimming with elegance. But while the grand, three-story stone façade might suggest a traditional interior, the homeowners choose a bold and beautiful color scheme that’s anything but conventional. “They wanted their home to reflect a soft elegance mixed with unique, one-of-a-kind moments,” Mathison says. “It also needed to be comfortable for their daughters (and dogs).” Elegance with a twist extends seamlessly throughout the expansive estate. The formal dining room that seats 12 combines refinement and whimsical appeal, with its handpainted Gracie wallpaper in a soft celadon color. This print was the original inspiration and ultimate foundation for the color palette of the formal rooms, where there is a continuation of soft green, blue and ivory hues with accents of pink and brown.

The adjacent powder room picks up the color scheme with an aqua Cowtan & Tout wallpaper featuring goldleaf vines and leaves in a trellis pattern. The breakfast room boasts a robin’s-egg blue grasscloth by Schumacher behind the pastel Bird & Basket fabric by Bennison, continuing the approachable-meets-playful elegance throughout the main floor. But in the daughters’ bedrooms, the home lets its hair down and welcomes bolder patterns and brighter colors that reflect each of their personalities. The teenager’s bedroom resembles a big-city apartment with high-gloss turquoise trim painted Benjamin Moore’s Calypso Blue and a statement wall covered with a Phillip Jeffries wallpaper called Moroccan Trellis. To honor the middle schooler’s penchant for Paris, Mathison envisioned the room with a softer palette of purples, golds and blues that evoke the je ne sais quoi of the City of Lights. Both bedrooms were intentionally laid out with matching furniture floor plans and subtle changes to highlight each girl’s individual 64

personality and sense of style. Another unabashedly colorful room is the doggy spa, which is much more than a doghouse. As proud owners of three dogs as well as frequent foster parents for pets, the homeowners wanted a space designed specifically for their four-legged friends. Forecasting plenty of roughhousing, they installed easy-to-clean white subway tile

66

on the floors and siding, as well as a drain to hose off unexpected messes. A Tyler Hall wallpaper featuring retro images of pups riding in convertibles is the perfect print to complete the room. Whether the homeowners are wrangling dogs or entertaining in the formal dining room, Mathison treated this vast retreat to a bold and beautiful look in every nook and cranny. AFTER MORE THAN A DECADE of traveling the country with the NFL, professional athlete Chris Crocker and wife Karrie made a game plan to permanently plant their boots on the ground. But where? Though the couple originally dreamed of a forever home in California, the East Coast turned out to be a more appealing scene since family lived in Georgia. As the couple began their plans to build in Suwanee, Karrie knew that her West Coast– meets–East Coast style would best be achieved with the guiding hand of interior designer Amy Meier. So, with the acclaimed San Diego– based decorator on board, the Crockers set out to design a soothing, clean and beautiful house from the ground up. Designed by architect Mike Swilley and built by Robert Wilkins Homes Inc., the 9,000-square-foot home is steeped in both Southern tradition and subtle West Coast influences. “We blended the formality and sophistication that is the hallmark of traditional Southern homes with the fresh, clean look of coastal California,” Meier says. “These two competing ethoses happily play with each other throughout the house.” The main dictate for the home’s design was that it needed to match Karrie’s West-meetsEast vision while remaining kid-friendly, as the young couple has two darling daughters under the age of 3. Meier’s challenge: to combine comfort with function; she began the project by selecting an on-point palette of clean, fresh colors rooted in the celadon and gray families that pair well with the formal architecture. 75

AmyMeier.indd 75

4/29/16 11:30 AM

“The soft color play creates a soothing yet sturdy environment that’s consistent and flows through the house while also allowing each room to speak for itself and have its own identity,” Meier says. “It is about texture and subtle color variations, with occasional drama.” While traditional furnishings mix with contemporary touches throughout, Karrie was initially reluctant to include antiques. But after one visit to Ainsworth-Noah at ADAC, she was sold on their beauty and endurance. “I reasoned that if the pieces have lasted this long and stood the test of time, then they surely can withstand two little girls,” Meier jokes. Karrie soon welcomed the idea of incorporating antique lighting as well, a pivotal move that Meier suggested would add soul to the new construction. The designer spent more than a year sourcing pieces from coast to coast to fit the Crockers’ aesthetic. From fine antiques stores in Spanish moss–dripping Savannah to funky flea markets in sunny San Diego, Meier curated a vast assortment of pieces that effortlessly fuse the two inspirational coastlines into one forever home. ORGANIC REACH. Search engine optimization. Cost per click. Geotargeting. Who or what do these terms have in common? My digital-savvy little sister and me, that’s who. Although we’re eight years apart (sometimes nine, depending on the month), my little sister Meg and I have always been more like twins. We both speak faster than the guy who does the Jimmy John’s commercials; we were always the awkwardly tall kid (with awkwardly large teeth) in the center of the back row in class pictures; we unabashedly judge people by their grammar; and the interwebs play a key role in both of our professions, although she’s a social media manager and I’m an interior designer. Over the past eight years, our seemingly divergent career paths have collided on

multiple occasions. When she graduated from the college of journalism at the University of Florida in 2007, Meg interned for one of my best friends at the Georgia Aquarium, drafting website content and coordinating news segments. Shortly thereafter, when I decided to publish my entire body of interior design work in the form of a blog, I tapped her for help editing my posts. When social media became the biggest thing since the Jonas Brothers, kale chips or quinoa, she consistently weighed in on the importance of a clearly defined writing style, SEO, key influencers and the best (and worst) Instagram feeds to follow. So when she bought her first home, a 750-square-foot, two-bedroom, top-floor unit in a historic building in the heart of Virginia83

OUTLANDISH, IMPRACTICAL, COLD, STERILE—THESE WORDS WERE LOBBED AT ME BY FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HEARD ABOUT MY IDEA TO PAINT THE FLOORS WHITE. Highland, it was natural for me to take the reins for the remodeling and interior design. My signature colors are black, dark green and navy, but my sister loves all things bright and coastal, so I had to check my bag of dark color tricks at the front door. Just hours after she signed her closing papers, I dispatched my go-to flooring expert to brighten the wood floors with oil-based floor paint in a high-gloss white finish—and promptly started the Flynn version of World War III. Outlandish, impractical, cold and sterile—these are just a few of the words lobbed at me by every family member who heard about my “crazy idea” to paint Meg’s floors white. But Meg gave in and has been obsessed with the floors ever since. Just a day or two after the floors dried, my painting and wallpaper team covered the home floor to ceiling in shades of blue-grey, light aqua and coral, an extremely complicated color that also happens to be her favorite. Bygones. From the kitchen counter to the walls of the master bedroom, the space is packed with one-of-a-kind finds from antique stores, regional artisans and her adventures around the globe. At the heart of the space are handmade frames featuring photographic evidence of days spent rafting through the Grand Canyon, surfing in Nicaragua, paragliding in Switzerland, on safari in Namibia and shark diving in South Africa, to name a few. And yet the same girl who literally came nose-to-nose with a Great White shark was downright petrified to commit to a wallpaper print. Finally, her excitement piqued over Tulsi Block Print in coral for the bedroom and Taza in aqua, both from Thibaut. Using pattern helped the modestly sized rooms feel larger and more memorable than the tiny, beige boxes with which we started. Perhaps the biggest win from this endeavor? Her 8-year-old vizsla, Huckleberry, has yet to leave a mark on those “outlandish, impractical” white floors. Win. 87

AT THE TIP OF MEXICO’S BAJA PENINSULA, where the Pacific Ocean meets the sparkling Sea of Cortez, sits Los Cabos. Once just a small fishing community, the sun-drenched locale has evolved into a global golf destination that’s home to noted courses crafted by Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and other legends of the sport. The newly minted course at the Quivira Los Cabos development, however, is poised to emerge as Mexico’s premier golf enclave. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, his signature course at Quivira Golf Club was recently awarded Best New International Course by Golf magazine. Taking advantage of the area’s distinct ocean-desert-mountain topography, the course is perched atop sheer granite cliffs, offering breathtaking drops from tee to fairway and holes that hug the coastline. And with more oceanfront exposure than any other course in the 90

region, every fairway features panoramic vistas. For players looking to warm up before beginning their round, a spacious double-ended practice facility, adjacent to the clubhouse and parallel to the ocean, provides an ideal spot. During the round, players are invited to refresh themselves at four comfort stations interspersed throughout the course. The break points are sure to extend play time, but with fresh tapas and tacos, handcrafted drinks and flights of tequila being served, players will welcome the pause. Quivira Los Cabos is much more than just a golfer’s haven. It’s a 1,850-acre luxury masterplanned community featuring boutique resorts, private homes, villas and condos. Ranging in style from contemporary to hacienda-inspired, each residence boasts majestic views of Cabo’s revered landscape. Visitors during the early part of the year are treated to frequent sightings of California gray whales and humpback whales, which can be enjoyed by Quivira homeowners from their rooftops that were specially designed for entertaining. Residents can also enjoy a sense of community with a holistic club, organic garden, art gallery and wine club, thus enhancing Quivira’s philosophy of embracing the good life. quiviraloscabos.com

WELL CONNECTED

AS ONE OF THE LARGEST ISLANDS in the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda is also among the richest. Richard Branson and Google’s Larry Page have retreats just off the coast, no doubt attracted to the area’s beauty and its safe, laid-back vibe. But the sprawling island welcomed a new era of indulgence in the early 80s when the Wildensteins—a family who made their fortune in the art and horseracing worlds—were enticed enough by those same virtues to develop a 19-acre private family retreat. They named it Valley Trunk. Located on the southwestern part of Virgin Gorda known as the valley and named for the local Trunkback turtle, Valley Trunk is now owned and run by the family’s progeny, Alec and Diane Wildenstein—the brother and sister duo whose childhood memories of time spent growing up at Valley Trunk shaped their commitment to preserve and protect it. Keeping the property in the family has allowed them to remain steadfast to the original ideals set by their grandfather, who would be immensely proud of the stewards they have become. If there were ever a place that could get by on its looks,

it would be Valley Trunk. Stuccoed villas are thoughtfully tucked into place amid lush manicured flora and rare wild beauty. Gentle rolling hills spill down to one of the world’s loveliest beaches. The beach itself is a wonder, with clusters of gigantic volcanic boulders dotting the immaculate white sand. Yet, as compelling as the setting may be, Valley Trunk’s true appeal lies in its privacy, its diversions and its warm and nurturing staff—many of whom have been with the family from the beginning. Recently, Alec and Diane opened up their exclusive world to visitors who appreciate the same solitude and remoteness sought by their own family. Typically Valley Trunk is available for private rental only (maximum of 16 guests) but now “Escape Weeks” are offered during select shoulder season periods in May and October, allowing guests to book one of the estate’s magnificent suites or villas individually for a fraction of the usual buy-out price. The hillside villas, each housing two or three one-bedroom suites (a total of eight in all) are scattered about just so, creating quiet hideouts into which guests may withdraw. 93

Since a stay at Valley Trunk includes food and beverages, it’s a bonus that the dining experience is world-class, thanks to the experience of well-traveled head chef Bernard Guilhaudin. Throughout his career Guilhaudin has earned Michelin stars, first while working with Chef Alain Chapel in his three Michelin star restaurant in Paris and then two Michelin stars at his own restaurant Laurent in Paris, one at Hotel Royal Monceau and two more at La Tour d’Argent before going to Japan to teach French cuisine there. With his global mastery of cooking, guests have the pleasure of savoring Moroccan, French, Japanese, Balinese and Caribbean dishes, among others, prepared with the freshest local fish and seafood, a variety of meats, tropical fruits and estate-grown vegetables. An assortment of lavish desserts, which almost always includes home-made ice cream, follows every single lunch and dinner. Meals are served buffet style and enjoyed outdoors in various settings—always presented with thoughtful attention to detail, including exquisite fresh floral centerpieces along with tableware, placemats and linens that are different for each meal and never repeated during your stay. Valley Trunk holds a very special allure because to stay here is to step into another world for awhile and live like the proverbial “other half,” where every guest is made to feel like part of a very well-heeled family. There’s simply no other place like it in the world. valleytrunk.com

AND, OUT OF AFRICA Valley Trunk owners, brother and sister Alec and Diane Wildenstein, also own and operate the 58,000 acre OL JOGI WILDLIFE CONSERVANCY in Kenya and fund their own environmental programs with profits from the two resorts. A large portion of revenue generated from rentals goes back into their wildlife and community efforts in hopes that one day both resorts will sustain themselves well into the future. olijogihome.com

Even though the spacious rooms have vast windows, they are utterly secluded. All of the villas have private terraces, with comfortable chaises for observing the birds or relaxing to the sounds of the ocean. Plush Frette linens, full-size Hermès amentities and enormous tiled baths with separate showers are just some of the luxurious touches. No request is out of reach for the Valley Trunk team— from arranging therapeutic in-room spa treatments (or anywhere on property) to activities such as paddle-boarding, tennis, kayaking, PADI dive instruction or a bonfire on the beach, to name just a few. A singular standout on the team is general manager Chris Tilling, a tall, knowledgeable host who seemingly never sleeps. Excursions with Chris are guaranteed to delight, especially a visit to the Baths National Park, which, if not listed among the natural wonders of the world, certainly should be. Situated at the southernmost tip of the island, just a quarter mile from Valley Trunk, this is an activity not to miss. Visitors crawl under, over and between mammoth granite boulders that reveal sheltered sea grottoes and pools. The reward for successfully maneuvering the mildly challenging rock maze is a swim or snorkel in Little Devils Bay before heading back. On property, guests may opt for a leisurely walk through the gardens, relax while sipping Veuve Clicqout Champagne (exclusively) on the terrace where a 17th-century Dutch West Indies Company bronze cannon holds court, or swim in the ionized pool overlooking Valley Trunk Bay. There is also a fully-equipped gym where yoga or Pilates instructors are always on call. But perhaps the show-stopper of the Valley Trunk experience is Xanadu, the 68-foot Bertram yacht that is available for exploring this sailor’s paradise. Spend the day wandering around coves accessible only by boat, snorkeling the colorful reefs or touring the neighboring islands. Add the ultimate luxury of a chef-catered lunch on board, complete with the aforementioned Champagne and crisp, chilled rosé and you have the perfect day. Guests wanting to luxuriate by the ocean love Bali House, an open-air bamboo pavillion that was discovered by the Wildensteins in Bali, decontructed and reconstructed pieceby-piece by Balinese artisans who were brought over specifically for the task. Bali House sits just steps way from the beach and is a favorite gathering spot for lunches and sunset dinners al fresco. Gentle breezes and the sound of the waves create a magical backdrop for resting and reading, too. a t l a n t a h o m e s m a g. c o m J U N . 2 0 1 6

LIFE

MARCIA SHERRILL MARCIA’S FAVORITE PLACES

THE MUDROOM

Every well-bred Atlantan knows how to keep outside messes at bay—with a stylish mudroom, of course. Marcia reflects on this often-overlooked necessity.

W

HEN I WAS A CHILD, ONLY MY GRANDPARENTS had the luxury of a mudroom; they’d needed one for their nine children, and then their 48 grandchildren. Even when they downsized to a one-story home, Nanny insisted on a mudroom. There were far too many kids clomping in dirt, sweat and filthy clothes for her to rest easy without one. (We grandchildren would often stream into the house after dangerous games of full-tackle football and dirt tag.) I always dreamed of having a mudroom when Anabelle was a child, but neither my places in New York or Atlanta ever afforded that well-organied luxury. 104

In fact, it took a decision to take up temporary residence in New Orleans—where I rented a pad to be closer to my daughter—to finally find an abode with a mudroom. Since most apartments and houses in New Orleans are shotgun style, let’s just say my search was fairly lengthy. But then, by George, I found it: A tile floor with a center drain. Cupboards for cleaning supplies. A low shelf for boots and sneakers. Since we are now avid bow fishermen, we need room for lots of gear. (Yes, we’ve been known to fish with bows and arrows on the bayou many nights.) Nanny had the right idea, and now I, too, can rest easy.

EMILY FOLLOWILL

This mudroom by designer James Wheeler embodies soft approachability, featuring a slim, custom bench by Bjork Studio and and a serene color palette of blues and grays.
