ONDLY REFERRED TO AS “DAPPER DAN,” Dan Carithers was renowned for entertaining, and his layered, elegant interiors remain relevant today. “Dan wanted everything to be pretty, so his designs were classic and timeless,” says interior designer Judy Bentley, Carithers’ colleague for more than a decade. After starting his career at venerable Rich’s Department Store, Carithers became known for his ability to educate clients about interior design, antiques and decorative arts while making the process accessible. “Dan loved to shop; it didn’t matter for what or where he was, he could pick out something fabulous and he made the process fun,” says Bentley. Carithers was as astute at design and business as he was charming and gregarious. He traveled extensively, and his roving eye never failed to discover the most unusual and interesting objects that could transform an interior from attractive to showstopping. As a businessman, Carithers developed relationships with Baker and Sherrill long before interior designers

began to focus on branding and licensing. Unlike most designers who carefully guard both clients and sources, Carithers launched the next generation of many successful designers. Heather Dewberry, Will Huff, Lee Boren Kleinhelter, Betty Burgess, Margaret Kirkland and Caroline Willis are just a few of Atlanta’s current tastemakers who developed under the tutelage of Carithers. “Dan had confidence in himself, in his clients and in his designs, so he never felt in competition with his employees,” says Bentley. Instead, Carithers happily groomed them to assume their places in creating interiors for their contemporaries. Simply put, Carithers had a passion for decorating, and only used “pretty things.” He enjoyed creating beautiful spaces for his clients as much as he relished doing it for his wife, Nancy, and their family. Creamware, brown-and-white checks, taupe-andwhite stripes, upholstered headboards, skirted tables and white flowers were synonymous with Carithers Design. And, like the man himself, these elements remain high on a pedestal among the great classics.

ROM HIS OPEN ATRIUM concepts to his convictions on equality, John C. Portman, Jr. shattered conventional architectural concepts as he put the needs of residents first. As a young architect starting out in the 1950s, Portman worked on commercial projects; however, it was his prior experience working at Davison’s department store that gave him great insight into merchandising. From that perspective, Portman understood that the way customers interacted was critical to their investment in the products and services sold within a space. In a sequence of projects that would put Atlanta on the map as a destination for

architecture and design, he developed the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) and AmericasMart Atlanta. “When he finished the Mart, he said that ‘Atlanta will be the next great international city,’” says Mickey Steinberg, one of the original architects and executives who remains a senior advisor to Portman Holdings. Both the skyline and business changed when Portman developed Atlanta’s Peachtree Center. A multiuse complex comprised of office towers and the Hyatt, Westin, and Marriott hotels, Peachtree Center anchored downtown Atlanta. However, Portman’s reach was expansive and included significant developments such as the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco, the Marriott Marquis at Times Square and the Shanghai and Beijing Centres. As vastly impactful as Portman’s developments were, so too were his efforts in ensuring that they were accessible to everyone. “John always said that he was designing for the people; not for critics,” says Steinberg. In negotiating the Hyatt, Portman placed a condition on the property that it be integrated. When he learned that Jewish Atlantans had few options for large-scale entertaining, Portman built a kosher kitchen in the Westin Hotel. “When someone asked him why he was going to such lengths, John replied, ‘because it’s the right thing to do,’” says Steinberg. With a commitment to the people who would use his projects, Portman changed cities around the globe. “John said that we should never impose a solution, but rather we should understand a problem and expose an answer,” says Steinberg. In doing so, John Portman remained dedicated to architecture, to Atlanta and to the people of the city he loved.

BEVERLY BREMER

EVERLY BREMER WAS AS resilient and strong as the sterling silver she sold from her eponymous shop on Peachtree Road. As a single mother of three children with no child support or alimony, Bremer was horrified when a pawnshop owner offered to melt down her sterling silver flatware in exchange for cash. She realized that selling her flatware to someone who would use it was a far more palatable idea. In that stroke of genius, Beverly Bremer became the nation’s most renowned dealer of sterling silver flatware, hollowware and gifts. After selling three days every week at a Buckhead market, Beverly generated enough business to open a retail shop

in Buckhead. She had gleaned valuable business skills while previously working at Rich’s Department Store, where Dick Rich taught her that the customer is always right; to find niche markets; and to stay in touch with her clients. “Beverly was enormously astute in recognizing the needs of her clientele, and she was tenacious in delivering the best pieces and the best service to them,” says Mimi Bremer, Beverly’s daughter and the president of the company. As brilliant as Bremer was at communicating with her existing clients in Atlanta, she was incredibly savvy at creating new customers. Her 2-inch square ad in the back of The New Yorker magazine proclaiming “Missing a Piece of Your Pattern”

launched her business to a national clientele. “She built this business one client at a time with incredible attention to each person,” says Mimi. Forty years later and in the same location, Beverly Bremer Silver Shop is a testimony to Beverly’s shrewd business skills and commitment to quality. “We promote everyday elegance with sterling silver, and we want people to enjoy and use their sterling pieces,” says Mimi. Additional evidence of the strength of the company is in the longevity of the employees; most have been with the company for more than 20 years. “I’m very grateful to be part of this amazing business that my mother started with her beautiful sterling silver,” says Mimi.

Pioneering Roots

When Suzanne Cox opened The Gables in 1978 at a “little green Victorian house” on Piedmont Road, it was largely a high-end gift store with a few antiques, wicker pieces and baskets. But a passion for porcelain and Country French antiques quickly changed her focus. A pioneer in her own right, Cox journeyed to Communist China after it opened up to the world, where she discovered, and subsequently imported, large quantities of antique Chinese porcelain. In addition to capturing the attention of local decorators with her unique ﬁnds, one particular high-end hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead, also took note, purchasing much of her antique porcelain collection for its dining room. Country French 20

remained the store’s bread and butter, which Cox embraced along with equally respected contemporaries such as Tom Hayes & Associates, Dotty Travis, Jane Marsden and Ainsworth-Noah. At The Gables, though, remembers designer Jackye Lanham, “every decorator would line up outside its doors awaiting the new shipment to be revealed.”

Expansion

After 10 years in business, Cox outgrew the house, and set up shop in their current Miami Circle showroom in 1988. The Gables has

since served not only high-end residences, but also hospitality environments. Commercial design ﬁrms such as Ferry Hayes & Allen put their stamp on Cherokee Town & Country Club with pieces sourced from The Gables, and the tapestries hanging in the lobby of the renovated The Cloister Hotel at Sea Island are also a Suzanne Cox ﬁnd. “The Gables is a rare kind of environment,” says Ted Cleveland, formerly of Ferry Hayes & Allen. “The staff is dedicated and truly interested and knowledgeable. They have always worked with us to get the right thing for our clients that is right and appropriate.”

Milestones

Cox and her dedicated staff—Pat McGuone, Jean Langway, Fran Beindorf and Laura Merlini—have always thrown lavish anniversary celebrations, with the exception of The Gables’ 35th year, during which Cox took the entire team to Tuscany in lieu of a formal celebration. While the parties always celebrated the showroom’s devoted customer base, Cox points out that these days, her clientele is much more spread out thanks to an online presence with sites like 1stdibs and inventory being pushed out through a variety of online platforms. Today’s clients, says Cox, are more interested in “the mix,” whether the aesthetic is contemporary or traditional. As The Gables approaches its 40th anniversary—a year in which Cox will simultaneously celebrate her 65th birthday, and the lease for her Miami Circle showroom will come up for renewal—the stars appear to be aligning for Cox and her team. “It’s the next logical step,” she says of her decision to retire this fall. “If the right person comes along, I would consider selling, but I am ready for the next chapter.”

There’s a section of the [New York] High Line, which is a set of stairs that looks down onto the street below. We wanted the ability for people to sit on the stairs. We looked at Manhattan’s Bryant Park, which has a great urban park feel but also has a ground plane that is more granular. Working with our landscape architect, Site Solutions, it was really important to keep the big trees.

LEGACY

THE CLASSICAL PROPERTIES architect Philip T. Shutze designed in Atlanta continue to capture attention, as historic preservationists and some owners resolve to maintain and preserve their storied elegance. On the market for $3.995 million is Buckhead’s Spotswood Hall, a neoclassical revival home built in 1913 on two acres. Shutze’s redesign was completed in 1933. “Obviously, the architectural signiﬁcance of the home is the most important part about selling this home,” says agent Kyle Baumann with Beacham & Company, Realtors. The sellers worked with architect Norman D. Askins to renovate the 7,666-square-foot home with an eye toward the past and present. “It’s rare to ﬁnd a home that is both renovated and restored to this level,” Baumann says. The 50-plus homes in the Buckhead market listed for $3 million to $14.7 million include only a few renovated historical homes.

Naomi Von Habersham THE LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER ARE HERE, but are they really that lazy? Certainly, the pace of life slows down in the summer, even if one works. And the heat and humidity in the South make hustling and bustling virtually impossible. But when I think back to the summers of my childhood—a time when summer is supposed to be as lazy as it gets—I recall the annual school assignment that nagged at me every June, July and August: the summer reading list. Knowing that I had to read five or six books (or was it seven or eight? Some summers, it felt like 10!) in a three-month period never failed to distress me. And although now as an adult it seems like such a minor assignment, when you’re a child, it feels daunting— especially when Moby Dick is on the list. Now that I’m at an age that makes me eligible for Medicare, the thought of spending summer evenings and weekends with my nose in a good book seems heavenly. In fact, I’ve compiled my own summer reading list with nary a trashy book on it. (It’s not that I’m opposed to trashy novels, it’s just that I’ve already read Jackie Collins’ entire oeuvre.) In an effort to fill in the gaps of my education, I plan to read some classics like Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray and The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky. I’m also going to tackle In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust. Correction: I’m going to start Proust’s masterpiece, knowing full and well I won’t finish it. No one ever seems to. It’s almost 5,000 pages! In between these serious-minded tomes, I’ll indulge in some humor, such as any P.G. Wodehouse novel. I even hope to squeeze in some cozy mysteries. For all of the angst summer reading once caused me, I’m looking forward to the months ahead, working my way through my booklist. Just don’t expect me to write any book reports come September. 27

AN ENGLISH REGENCY GEM on 3 acres in Buckhead was poised for a makeover. While the home’s existing architectural details— moldings, palladium windows and a grand rounded staircase—were noteworthy, they remained rooted in the past. Enter a talented team of collaborators who were ready to bring the house in line with a modern lifestyle: architect D. Stanley Dixon, interior designer Nancy Izlar, landscape architect John Howard and kitchen designer Cynthia Ziegler. One initial and critical design decision involved a reworking of the approach and parking areas. As was typical of a house built in the 1920s, the home’s parking area was on the rear and occupied space that could be better put to use. “Addressing the hardscape was critical to both the functionality and the aesthetics of the project,” says Howard. “The approach and circulation were reinvented and designed on an axis with the facade.” A rear addition houses a garage on the lower level, while space for overflow parking was carved out as well. Howard also created an elliptical expanse of green, which softens the back of the home.

Dash of Dynamism left and below An underwhelming mantel in the dining room was replaced with an 1840s English gesso and carved pine mantel from Architectural Accents for added sophistication. The generously sized dining room required a touch of drama to keep it from feeling cold, so Izlar chose the Arena Design wallcovering for its lightness and movement. The wallcovering is through Ainsworth-Noah.

The house itself was in need of more cohesive space, so Dixon added two wings that blend seamlessly with the rest of the home. “When we implemented the stucco on the wings, we added colored pigment into the mix, so it would have a weathered patina,” says the architect, who had worked on the house in a small way 10 years ago. “We added this stucco veneer to the entire exterior to blend the old with the new.” Meanwhile, the house also required familyfriendly updates, so Izlar had it completely gutted. The addition of a large opening between the kitchen and breakfast room allows light to flow between the two spaces. “We also enlarged the master suite and master closets by incorporating existing space from the left side of the house into the design,” says Dixon. 39

Izlar, who had known the clients for years before becoming involved in the renovation, infused the interiors with a lighter touch. In the dining room, the designer replaced a dated, persimmon damask fabric with an Arena Design wallcovering that “has wonderful colors and movement, and the black trim was painted and glazed, instantly brightening the space.” A larger, 1840s English gesso-and-carved pine mantel replaced the original, creating a focal point that complements the wallpaper’s warm tones. 40

When it came to furniture, the designer essentially had a blank slate. “The family was moving from a bungalow in Brookwood Hills, and their existing furniture did not fit with the scale of this house,” explains Izlar. The result: a home that comes to life with elegance and subtle brushes of color, enhancing the inherent beauty of the original architecture. Classic Charm In the living room of this Braselton, Georgia, residence, a lofty ceiling with rough-hewn beams creates a spacious feel, as do a wall of French doors that open onto a screened porch and outdoor kitchen area. Interior designer Gretchen Edwards outﬁtted the room with subtle pattern—as seen in the drapery, herringbone sofas and overscaleplaid coffee table. “I love the combination of geometrics and different shades, but it’s all really taken from the rug and drapery fabric,” the designer says.

A AFTER LIVING AT CHATEAU ELAN for 16 years, Teresa and Allen Hughes, a pair of retired empty nesters who love to travel and entertain, decided to put down roots in the sprawling town of Braselton, Georgia. Equipped with 20 acres of land, the Hughes knew they’d require a design-build dream team to complete the job, so they enlisted the talents of architect Yong Pak, interior designer Gretchen Edwards, project manager Alan Webster with Benecki Homes and landscape architect Richard Anderson. The result: a French-inspired manse whose striking, Normandy-style architecture and carefully layered interiors create a timeless retreat that feels connected to the outdoors. “Teresa’s dream was French country, and I loved everything about that,” says Edwards. “She’s traditional and conservative but didn’t want it too formal.” To achieve this vision, the team incorporated Frenchinspired details throughout, including limestone surrounds and stucco on the exterior, and a Venetian-style plaster finish on the walls of the foyer, living room and

breakfast room. A boiserie French wood paneling adds interest to the formal dining room. Pak also incorporated soaring ceilings and an abundance of authentic French windows and doors sources from Normandy, which let in plenty of sunlight and take advantage of the property’s views. “Those are the real deal,” says Pak. “I tried to bring the outside space in. This house lives very modern but we tried to bring a Normandy country house feel to it.” To complement the architecture and keep living areas from reading too sparse, Edwards paid close attention to scale, layering antiques, patterns and organic elements to add warmth and bring the outdoors in. “I always love bringing elements of nature,” she says. “It was very easy to accomplish that here. Everywhere you turn and look, there’s a gorgeous nature vignette out every window.” In the expansive living room, Edwards broke up the space by creating a seating arrangement featuring herringbone sofas from 56

Webb Marsteller and a pair of chairs that belonged to the Hughes, which she reupholstered in a Duralee fabric. To cultivate a sense of ease, Edwards also incorporated subtle patterns and neutral hues borrowed from the rug and nature-inspired drapery fabric. While many of the home’s walls are plaster, Edwards took a different approach for the sizable master bedroom, enveloping the oval-shaped space in softness by paneling the walls in a Duralee fabric and covering the floors with wall-to-wall carpet. Floor-toceiling windows provide panoramic views of the outdoors. “It like stepping into another world,” she says. The same can be said for the overall result, thanks to a hardworking team who spared no detail in catering to the Hughes’ every need. “I couldn’t be more pleased,” Edwards says. “It’s so rewarding to me that they enjoy living here and are as comfortable as they are and enjoy it as much as they do.” See Resources, Back of Book

Due Diligence Here, the home’s overall Normandy-style architecture is evident. To accommodate the Hughes’ vision of a French country home, Pak incorporated classic French windows and doors—sourced from Menuiserie Thareaut in Normandy— into the overall design. Limestone surrounds, a slate roof and stucco exteriors also convey a French-inspired feel. A screened porch and outdoor grill area feature a table and benches that Allen built from black walnut, which was recycled from trees he cut down on the property.

UCKET LIST” IS OFTEN BANDIED ABOUT, particularly when it comes to travel. Filled with classic cities and off-thebeaten-path locales, as the world gets larger, the proverbial list grows. And if ever there was a destination you need to see before you die, it’s the Galápagos Islands. Aptly called the “last paradise on earth,” Galápagos is an archipelago of volcanic islands near the equator and remains a mystery to most travelers. Recognized for its biodiversity and fragile ecosystem, it’s famously known as the place where naturalist Charles Darwin devised his theory of evolution. It is also a sacred spot, where red- and blue-footed boobies, playful penguins and sea lions, and prehistoric-like iguanas and century-old tortoises roam the earth. Designated as one of the Natural World Heritage sites of UNESCO, a visit to the Galápagos offers once-in-a-lifetime sights of animals and terrain as seen nowhere else on the planet. Travelers can visit this natural history–filled haven by land or by sea. While many prefer a cruise on a chartered boat, perhaps the best way to experience all this wonderland has to offer is a stay at the five-star luxury Pikaia Lodge. have evolved into a vertebrate some 500 million years ago, the 77-acre resort stays true to its roots as a model of sustainability and luxury. Notes founder and developer Herbert Frei: “I bought the land for the location, space, view and, most of all, the access to its beauty. It is hidden in a beautiful place, connected with nature and next to the Galápagos National Park.” Frei chose Ecuadoran architect Humberto Plaza to create the resort’s modernist style that harmoniously blends in with the topography. For the interiors, Frei looked to his daughter, designer Maria-Elena Frei-Shepherd. “The philosophy was being environmentally conscious and having a modern and comfortable approach that would contrast the wild nature that was surrounding us,” says Frei-Shepherd. This translated into the use of bamboo floors, lava stone from the island, polished Moroccan marble with fossils, Peruvian travertine and wood from the sustainable agroforest for the furniture. Built entirely with recycled materials, imported steel beams capture the rainfall while solar panels and a wind turbine comprise a third of the lodge’s power. The lodge is themed around evolution, and details of the island’s most famous visitor are seen in everything from artist Larissa Marangoni’s “Big Bang” sculptures and the lobby to the Homo Sapiens Explorer Lounge (complete with screening room), the DNA Bar and Evolution Restaurant where Peruvian and Ecuadorian cuisine are specialties. Luxury is just part of the experience, as ecoadventures are the order of the day. Land-based day tours include an up close and personal visit with one of the world’s oldest mammals at the private Tortoise Reserve, El Chato Ranch (the island’s favorite, Lonesome George, passed away at more than 100 years old). Pay an educational visit with a local guide to the Charles Darwin Research Station. A day at sea on the lodge’s 100-foot yacht M/Y Pikaia I includes snorkeling adventures to nearby islands featuring sharks, sea lions, yellowtail snapper, angelfish and the occasional sea turtle. N A WORLD WHERE IT CAN FEEL increasingly hard to escape and go off the grid, Mukan Resort, south of Tulum, is where the search ends. Tucked securely into the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mukan is a small, luxurious-but-natural resort on a narrow strip of land surrounded by untouched forests to the north and south and bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the east and the San Felipe Lagoon to the west. The Sian Ka’an property, covering 1.6 million acres, supports terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems, but also provides a dazzling display of rich flora and fauna for Mukan guests to observe and relish, whether they’re settled into a beach chair or on a guided excursion. Perhaps the hallmark of a true vacation destination is its capacity to transport you—body and mind—to somewhere totally different. At Mukan, stow your shoes in the closet and put the watch away. It’s an eat-when-you’re-hungry, sleep-whenyou’re-sleepy kind of place. Laid-back living is an understatement here—there’s no one to rush you—ever. The resort is private, personal and exclusive. Bathrooms have both deep tile bathtubs and spacious showers, with luxurious Molton Brown bath products, soft robes & flip flops. Although Mukan is THE place to unplug, the resort still offers complimentary wi-fi, air conditioning and large flat screen Smart TV in every room. A mini-refrigerator is stocked everyday with snacks and sodas. Starting a day at Mukan is like nowhere else. Rise at your leisure to the gentle sound of the waves, perhaps take a swim, snorkel or walk on the beach, or engage in beach yoga or meditation. When you return to your room or bungalow, a tray with hot coffee awaits, along with a young coconut, fresh off a tree, with a straw for sipping the refreshing nectar inside. After a nutritious breakfast featuring a menu of fresh fruits and Mexican specialties such as chilaquiles and Eggs al Gusto, hop in a kayak or on a paddleboard, grab a bike, snorkel or dive the coral reef, or take a dip in the plunge pool off the open-air lobby. Then perhaps a “panga” boat tour out to sea to scout for sea turtles, dolphin and rays. Pangas also navigate the meandering mangrove channels on the lagoon side, where the bird-watching is spectacular. Fly fishing is also a major sport in the Sian Ka’an, if that’s your pleasure.

Lunch can be enjoyed by the pool by the beach, under a palm tree or in your room. Fresh ceviches, along with other local dishes, are always accompanied by a basket of tortilla chips, several styles of pico de gallo, from mild to hot to “uh-oh,” and the best guacamole you’ll ever have. Try the “green drink”—a non-alcoholic combination of fresh fruits and herbs—or opt for an ice cold beer or a refreshing glass of Monte Xanic Sauvignon Blanc from the Guadalupe Valley in Baja. The beach at Mukan is expansive. Beach cabanas, perfect for reading or napping, and comfy beach chaises are spaced far apart to provide ample privacy for the small number of guests. Background noise is a combination of lapping waves and sea birds (there are more than 300 bird species in the Biosphere) instead of someone else’s annoying playlist. Nowhere else in the world, unless you are Richard Branson living on a private island, can you find such peaceful, quiet solitude. Continue your Zen with afternoon yoga, or one of several massages offered by spiritually guided therapists. Choose from Deep Tissue, Thai, Janzu, Myofascial Release or a Relaxing Massage. Finish off with a soak in The Rooftop spa tub. From here, you can see the crystal blue Caribbean to the east and watch the sun setting over the Lagoon to the west … both at the same time. Dinner, most often set up on the beach or under the palm trees, includes a delicious soup, a choice of fresh fish, seafood or meat entree, and light dessert. The chef and his team match meals to the tastes of their guests, but with a nod to Mayan culture and culinary traditions. The portions are generous, but manageable. By all means, enjoy the (very non-American) practice of lingering over your evening meal, under the stars, before heading back to what might be the highlight of the day—sea breezes and soft waves lulling you to sleep. T WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT to call South Caicos paradise. While many visitors to Turks and Caicos are familiar with Providenciales—which is known for its celebrity visitors and smattering of luxury resorts, high-rises, shops and restaurants—the island’s quieter, less developed and equally (if not more) beautiful sister, South Caicos, provides the ultimate sanctuary for sequestered respite. The smallest main island in the Caicos archipelago, South Caicos is separated from the Turks Islands by the 20-mile Turks Island Passage. Long untouched by the tourism industry, the 8.3-square-mile island is home to the world’s third-largest coral reef and served as Turks and Caicos’ predominant salt exporter for some 200 years. Today, small-scale commercial fishing is the primary industry, and the secluded island’s natural beauty remains virtually unspoiled. T’S EASY TO RECALL THE RELAXING FREEDOM of childhood summers—long days without homework, when time was measured by playing outside and every day held a new adventure. Even as adults, the pressures of little ones’ swim team practice are less stressful than the frantic tackling of a forgotten school project (that is of course always due the next morning). One of my most cherished summertime memories is of a simple, singular pleasure that only summer can afford. My family’s rambling house sat beneath century-old oak trees, whose thick branches arched over our screened porch. Whenever one of the dark summer storms rolled through, my favorite spot to enjoy the lashing rain, booming thunder and purple sky was on the porch swing. I would curl up with a book and read through mother nature’s magic show, then relish the smells of wet grass and dirt once the storm passed. From vacations to late sunsets to looser fitting clothes, everything about summer is full of ease. Dinner cooked on the grill means fewer pots and pans to wash. The office schedule becomes a little less frenetic and demanding as employees rotate out for summer getaways. Suddenly the new restaurant that was booked for weeks has instant availability since everyone has left town for vacation. Summer’s longer, hotter days alter the rhythm of our lives to a more languid pace as we adapt to one of the season’s greatest gifts: time. Relish your grand adventures and summer vacations, but don’t forget to bask in the sweet and simple things close to home. Whether it’s snagging a great dinner reservation, wearing crinkled linen or marveling at the power of a thunderstorm, summer offers bounteous gifts. We all need a break, so give yourself permission to relax and enjoy the season.
