THERE WAS PERHAPS NO BETTER indication that house-loving Atlantans were looking for a realtime escape than the unexpected number of guests who joined us at our 2020 Southeastern Designer Showhouse in June. The gated six-acre property, in fact, could have been a metaphor for escape thanks to its serene, manicured grounds; a pool with a built-in firepit and spa that referenced resort-like living; and soaring Venetian plaster ceilings that at once embraced visitors with its rounded walls and oozed West Coastchic. If you weren’t able to pay us a visit in-person, you can practically feel the breezy sophistication by turning to page 66 for our Showhouse highlights. With the autumn season imminent, and our lives in constant flux to meet the ever-evolving circumstances

FALLING FOR The changing of seasons and cooler temperatures brings a slew of new introductions to welcome autumn’s happy hues in style. Take a look at some of our favorites Produced by ZOË GOWEN
Tiny Treasures
Set for the Season Whether eating takeout or a home-cooked meal, dining at home has become de rigueur over the last few months. Recently launched tabletop line VON GERN HOME offers practical, chic and colorful wares that can be arranged in nearly endless combinations to reinvent your table for every meal.
Showcase clippings from a bountiful autumn garden—like dahlias or goldenrod—with a bud vase crafted for BLOOMIST by artisan glassblower, Gary Bodker, in a deep rose color to complement the deeper fall palette. Place a single stem in one bud vase and group them together to make a stunning centerpiece. Available at Bloomist; bloomist.com
Available at Von Gern Home; vongernhome.com
HOT TODDY It's a well-known fact by those in the design world that whiskey is decorator BUNNY WILLIAMS’ year-round drink of choice. It comes as no surprise, then, that she would introduce the handsome Rhys Drinks Table this fall as many begin welcoming Old Fashioneds and Manhattans into their cocktail hour once again. Available at Bunny Williams Home, (212) 935-5930; bunnywilliamshome.com
Like Moths to a Flame R HUGHES offers a witty take on this old adage with the Haunt Pendant, a milk-glass orb embellished with cast-bronze moths designed by Jane Hallworth for HALLWORTH’s new American Gothic collection. Available at R Hughes, ADAC, (404) 607-8877; r-hughes.com

In his second book Notes on Decorating (Vendome Press, $70), designer Markham Roberts shares his design process with readers to show how he creates timeless, spirited spaces. While he covers important to-dos—such as establishing a sense of place, a study on proper embellishing and how to mix materials and styles tastefully—his main focus remains the same: The homeowner must feel their personality shining throughout.

A stylish dinner party should put you “in the moment, and make you feel as if there’s nowhere else in the world you’d rather be.”
JOIE de VIVRE IN HER SECOND BOOK DEVOTED TO ENTERTAINING, DANIELLE ROLLINS TAKES AH&L ON A FIRST-PERSON TOUR OF HER STYLISH MANSE Written by DANIELLE ROLLINS Produced by ZOË GOWEN
I’M FROM A LIFE-IS-A-MOVEABLE FEAST school of entertaining. What I mean is, I don’t always host dinner parties in my dining room, and I will just as often set up shop in the library, the family room, or the pool cabana. (I’ve even contemplated hosting a party in the garage for a big birthday party. Seriously. But my garage is painted navy and it is that pretty!) Breaking out of the standard protocol tends to be more interesting for me—and especially for my guests. But even I admit there is a certain kind of magic to hosting people in a room tailor-made for eating, even if it’s just re-plating takeout onto your favorite china, because you can art direct the variables: the flicker of candlelight, the gleam of crystal and silver, fireworks of pattern on porcelain and linens. At the end of the day, creating atmosphere is what it’s all about. One of the reasons I love entertaining at home so much is that you get to build a kind of cocoon. We’re assaulted all day long by things that demand our attention. But when you have people over, there are no crowds for them to jostle through. No struggle to get the waiter’s attention. You get real quality time with your friends. It’s a chance to reconnect. People loosen up. Nobody’s rushing off. They’ll have one more cocktail. And they aren’t on their phones, either; they’re not sitting there scrolling Pinterest or Instagram. And that’s exactly what design should do: put you in the moment, and make you feel as if 25

left “Reflective surfaces, like a neoclassical mirror and mirrored sconces, are magical in dining rooms,” remarks Rollins, “because they extend the sparkle.” opposite The chinoiserie screen is based on a historic English design Rollins commissioned from de Gournay.

there’s nowhere else in the world you’d rather be. The most prominent design feature I chose in the dining room was a series of chinoiserie wallpaper panels based on a historic English design that I commissioned from de Gournay in custom hues. The panels establish the room’s color scheme with shades of cantaloupe, eggplant and spinach. But what they were really doing is showcasing the hues in the china I already owned, so that no matter which patterns I set the table with—and it’s normally a mix of different ones—it would always look good. I dressed the windows in pelmets and curtains that I was able to bring from my last house. They’re made from a printed Fortuny damask that happened to coordinate well. They were too bright at first, but laying them out for a couple of days in
the Georgia sun solved that problem. Side note: Not everything has to be perfect. The other hero piece in the room is a gorgeous and massive George III breakfront with its original oval glass panels that I bought at auction. An antique sideboard across the room completes the English country vibe and has a serpentine front that echoes the shape of the pelmets. Just so the mood doesn’t get too stuffy, I made sure to bring in plenty of sparkle. We’ve got twinkle in spades: a vintage crystal chandelier, antique sconces, a high-gloss lacquered ceiling and a tall, gilded neoclassical mirror that acts almost like another window, except it magnifies all the candlelight, china, crystal and animated faces interacting over the table. What can I say? It is pure magic.
A Home for all Seasons: Gracious Living and Stylish Entertaining (Rizzoli, $50) hits bookshelves this month. The lushly illustrated tome travels room by room through tastemaker and designer Danielle Rollins’ Atlanta residence and acts as a primer for living and entertaining with practicality, style and above all, graciousness. rizzoliusa.com

ity is one of the primary feasibility factors. Converting a one-level pool house or a walk-in basement is a simple fix, but adding an elevator for upper-floor living can also be an option. Architect LINDA MACARTHUR draws from personal experience, as her mother-in-law lives with her family in a carriage house apartment. While it’s important to consult local ordinances about detached structure allowances, MacArthur advises to involve the family members who will call your house home. “Let them fully be a part of the discussion, and give them a say in the design,” she says.
SAFETY IN NUMBERS RESIDENTS VIEW rooftop balconies, pools and luxe lobbies as a major perk in high-rise living. In the age of social distancing, management companies and HOAs have instituted new protocols to keep them safe and open. “The J5 Condominiums’ amenities are one of the reasons people buy homes there,” says PAULINE MILLER, managing director for COMPASS DEVELOPMENT. For now, J5’s outdoor garden and pool are each limited to 10 residents at a time and a full-time crew cleans and sanitizes round-the-clock. Similarly, HANOVER BUCKHEAD VILLAGE luxury apartments have restricted capacities on shared amenities and offer virtual and self-guided tours for prospective residents. While the “current normal” is an adjustment, Miller says residents are responding positively. “People appreciate our safety measures,” she says. 30
Shepherd Center’s Refresh To create a warm, comfortable environment for patients and their families, our city’s top residential designers donated their talents for a recent refresh.

MUCH LIKE POOLS AND OUTDOOR living spaces have become necessities overnight thanks to COVID-19, the need for in-law suites or the desire to convert guest houses into places for their aging relatives to live in has greatly increased in Atlanta. “This could be due to baby boomers getting older, or to more people preferring to have their loved ones near as they grow older,” says BULENT BAYDAR, principal architect at HARRISON DESIGN. “We’re looking at [creating senior living space] on almost every job. Naomi Von Habersham I KEEP HEARING PEOPLE SAY that COVID-19 spells the end for dressy attire. Some pundits claim that the silver lining to this pandemic is that working from home means no longer having to wear a suit and tie, while others are reveling in a makeup-free, sweatpants-wearing new normal. Some are even predicting that women will never bother with heels ever again. I say not so fast. If anything, I’m sick of casual wear. Months of being cooped up at home has made me long for a new pair of Manolo Blahnik BB pumps and a tube of red lipstick, and I suspect I’m not the only one who feels this way. All this talk about dressing down has made me think about what the future holds for decorating our homes. Comfort will, of course, continue to be of the utmost importance, but it won’t necessarily be the design equivalent of sweatpants and no makeup. I’ll even go out on a limb and predict that our homes may become a little dressier and more indulgent than what we’ve been used to, because if we’re spending so much time at home trying to stay safe, shouldn’t our surroundings be attractive, gracious and pampering? Consider the pared-down window treatments that most of us have been living with for years. Yes, they’re spare and sleek, but lately, I’ve been thinking I would rather have luxurious curtains topped by valances if for no other reason than to serve as a beautiful buffer against the harsh outside world. I’m also beginning to use my fine china and sterling flatware on a daily basis, because if I’m going to be stuck at home night after night eating Lean Cuisines, I might as well make the most of it. I know we’re living in topsy-turvy times right now, but that’s all the more reason we should put forth some effort, both with our grooming and our decorating. Please, don’t resort to an athleisure-only wardrobe. As the redoubtable Karl Lagerfeld once said, “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat.”

■ LE COLONIAL Thanks to a new focus on to-go initiatives and a downstairs outdoor extension to the dining room, the Vietnamese venture from restaurateurs RICK WAHLSTEDT and JOE KING now allows guests to enjoy favorites—like pan-seared chicken dumplings or jumbo shrimp with coconut green curry—both at home or in one of their socially distanced dining rooms. lecolonialatlanta.com
DINING TODAY When tomorrow is unpredictable, how do you fare, much less operate a restaurant? AH&L takes a look at how these Atlanta favorites are evolving with changing times Written by LAUREN IVERSON Photography by DAVID CHRISTENSEN
■ AZIZA In the midst of unprecedented times, owner
TAL BAUM of this Westside Provisions Israeli restaurant introduced a unique solution to dining at a distance. Now offering a prix-fixe experience that remains rooted in shareable plates, the menu expansion serves diners a hearty taste of their favorite dishes in an effort to continue support for small farmers and local purveyors.

■ LAPEER SEAFOOD MARKET While the Alpharetta seafood spot was temporarily closed, coowner LOUIS SOON and executive chef BLAKE HARTLEY experimented with fresh, bold flavors to create an all-new menu inspired by Asian and Caribbean cuisine (think red curry shrimp and jerk chicken). lapeerseafoodmarket.com

■ SOUTHERN BELLE Change is in the air at JOEY WARD’s Southern comfort-style establishment. In addition to the extensive health precautions put in place—including red and green cards placed on tables to politely signal waiters from a distance— the restaurant has incorporated one of their chef’s side gig,
KT CAKES IN COLORS, and now offers celebratory cakes for order through their website. southernbelleatl.com
“It’s remarkable the support, compassion and accomplishment our community has demonstrated through these times. In a world full of chaos, the humanity shown by our customers and staff has been an incredibly positive experience to watch.” —Jake Guyette, general manager, Le Colonial
■ LITTLE REY FORD FRY’s Tex-Mex hot spot spent the past few months elevating their cooking techniques. Now cooking over mesquite, red oak and hickory wood with loads of lump charcoal, there’s even more rich and smoky flavor with every bite. littlerey.com
■ LYLA LILA Searching for inspiration on how to evolve in trying times? This Southern European Midtown establishment, headed by chef CRAIG RICHARDS and restaurateur BILLY STRECK, is one to watch. In addition to an always-evolving menu, the restaurant debuted new patio seating on Peachtree St. and also launched a fresh venture selling homemade dried pasta, available through their website. lylalilaatl.com

ABOUT SERENBE
MASTER PLAN
PHOTOGRAPHED BY STEVIE SEAY
Serenbe is pioneering a new community model connected to nature on the edge of Atlanta. A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes wellbeing as natural as nature itself. A community where people live, work, learn and play in celebration of life’s beauty. Where connections between people, nature and the arts are nourished. Serenbe is set among acres of preserved forests and meadows with miles of nature trails connect homes, restaurants, arts and businesses. Serenbe’s architectural planning sets a new standard for community living and engagement by remembering the past. Each of the neighborhoods have complementary commercial centers focused on the elements of a well-lived life: arts for inspiration, agriculture for nourishment, health for wellbeing and education for awareness. Year-round activities include cultural events, culinary workshops and festivals, music events, films and lectures, boutique shopping, art galleries, a wellness center with day spa and trail riding, plus a robust artist residency program featuring open studios, performances and talks.
Aerial view
Fresh food is another of Serenbe’s natural assets, with a 25-acre organic farm, seasonal Saturday farmer’s market, thriving CSA program and edible landscaping, including blueberry bushes and fig trees along paths and sidewalks. Serenbe is a place where you can come for the farmer’s market, enjoy a long weekend at the Inn or stay for a lifetime. 14

A LETTER FROM
SERENBE’S FOUNDER When the first residents moved to Serenbe 15 years ago, we had a master community design on paper and only a few houses built, yet I could already see what Serenbe would look like once completed. I could see how the winding country roads would connect our family’s first home in Chatt Hills— now The Inn and Farmhouse restaurant—to all the neighborhoods. I could see the varied styles of homes with welcoming porches clustered closely together among the woods and how we would preserve as much of the land as possible. I realize now that my years in hospitality running the Pleasant Peasant Group—where I brought people together over good food in beautiful spaces—informs my current work and what many now call “community placemaking.” Food and hospitality have always been at the forefront of everything I do—our country home became a bed and breakfast then an Inn, and we offered guests dinner and fried chicken lunches, which turned into The Farmhouse restaurant. Growing fresh local food is an integral part of the vision. “Agrihood” wasn’t a term when we planned an organic farm in the community, but we believed in farmers and connecting people to the natural food systems. We even integrated edible and medicinal landscapes into the neighborhoods, so you’ll find blueberry bushes at the crosswalks. You may know us for our extensive cultural events, staying at The Inn, dining at one of our restaurants, or maybe you’ve read about us in a magazine or newspaper or listened to our podcast, Serenbe Stories. The 15 years we’ve spent in this beautiful community we call home have flown by, but underneath the beauty of Serenbe there is deep substance and larger purpose. We have created a model of how to build with nature rather than against it. Our purpose is to develop in balance with the planet by connecting people with nature and each other. We do that in many ways but it starts with our respect for the land, the climate and our neighbors. The buildings and the sidewalks, the sustainable practices, the preserved nature trails are all important features that form the foundation for this place we call Serenbe. The people and personal connections energize those spaces making this a special place where waving to neighbors and strangers alike is commonplace. People tell me “to be touched by Serenbe is to be changed forever.” But I know it’s the collective spirit of the people who make Serenbe a true community. You, our residents and visitors, inspire me to do more.

THE ARTS AT SERENBE Serenbe is a community that passionately explores, embraces and expands the connections between nature, culture and the art of living. Multiple arts programs at Serenbe have been built out of intention and have grown organically over the years. The Art Farm is envisioned as the central platform and place for cultivating artists and the arts through residencies, workshops and studios and has been a literal platform for dinners, performances and artist celebrations. Also located at the Art Farm is the AIR Serenbe residency program housed in two cottages designed by the award-winning Rural Studio architecture program. AIR Serenbe promotes the creative process by providing artists of the highest caliber uninterrupted time and space and a welcoming community in which to create. Hundreds of artists have been supported since its inception and you can hear from upcoming artists in AIR’s new series, Something In The AIR, offering both insight and inspiration with profiles and interviews that share the stories of the artists, patrons and volunteers that make up the AIR Serenbe community. Learn more at airserenbe.com. You’ll also find art in the meadows of Serenbe where Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre performs. Terminus is a collective of five principal dance artists creating a place of innovation and creative thinking. Through performance and storytelling, the company intends to expand conventional definitions of ballet and serve as a cultural terminus for the greater arts community. Learn more at terminus-serenbe.com. The Serenbe Institute supports the artist residencies and modern ballet along with a forum for dialogue, Serenbe Fellows, providing cultural presentations, workshops and seminars for residents, neighbors and visitors to interact with cultural and environmental thought leaders and eminent scholars.
ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY
THE ART FARM AT SERENBE Art Farm at Serenbe hosts 50+ public programs a year, including Art Over Dinner, gallery exhibitions at Gainey Hall, art classes, corporate workshops and more. The Art Farm is located directly across the street from the Serenbe community and is home to the first two artist-in-residence (AIR Serenbe) cottages and private artist studios. Art Farm programs provide an opportunity to bring people together in support of the arts, with the belief that art in everyday life can create a greater understanding of the world. This growing 40-acre outdoor complex serves as a place for artists, the arts and culture and provides a physical space to ignite passion and imagination in nature and works in collaboration with the Serenbe Institute and other partners to amplify their work and makers. ART OVER DINNER Art Over Dinner is a series of gatherings with artists and the organizations that support their work. We collaborate with chefs and farmers to create a seasonal meal that showcases winemakers and brewers, and invite our guest artists to spark the conversation in an intimate setting. GAINEY HALL GALLERY SHOWS Curated art exhibitions in Gainey Hall, an Inn at Serenbe event space, rotate every 6-8 weeks. Artists featured are Serenbe residents and regional artists, emerging and established. Gainey Hall as a venue provides artists with a rich, diverse audience of visitors, corporate event guests, neighbors and residents. Proceeds from artwork sales support local artists and the Art Farm. *Learn more about the Art Farm, upcoming dinners and ticket information at artfarmatserenbe.com/events
Arts, culture and classes happen all over Serenbe—from the trails to Chatt Hills Gallery, a co-op gallery space featuring over 20 artist members from Serenbe and the greater community. Art classes can be taken at the Paint Space, an offshoot of the gallery, offering private and group fine art classes located in their Grange studio next to Hills & Hamlets. GREAT EXPECTATIONS ROTUNDA AND STAIR HALL, MARK WILLIAMS AND NIKI PAPADOPOULOS, MARK WILLIAMS DESIGN The grand rotunda and stair hall—marked by rounded Venetian plaster walls—evokes Hollywood glamour and sophistication. Who wouldn’t want to descend this sweeping staircase in their Academy Awards-best to greet their guests? “We would love to think that this is a house for a woman who knows her mind, supports other women and celebrates their successes,” says Papadopoulos. Playing to the curved walls and graphic but graceful stair, Williams says the feminine, sensual space was the catalyst for the artwork they chose. In the rotunda, the designers opted for a large cast-stone sculpture placed at the center of a brass inlaid floor design. “We didn’t want to dismiss the space as simply a pass through,” says Williams. “With this one piece we were able to create a powerful impression, without it becoming a distraction from the rest of the beautifully designed spaces.” A photograph by Fabiola Jean-Louis beckons guests to the seating area tucked under the floating staircase. “We wanted something powerful at the end of the sight line to draw you in from the rotunda, and the model’s riveting gaze certainly does that.” –Cathy McGowin 68

FINDING THE LIGHT LIVING ROOM, AMY MORRIS, AMY MORRIS INTERIORS Recalling the serenity she felt upon seeing the living room for the first time, designer Amy Morris sought to bolster that sense of tranquility with subtle yet striking furnishings that were chosen with the room’s architectural features in mind. Sheer curtains soften the edges of floor-to-ceiling windows while still inviting outdoor views into the space. An expansive hand-fluted plaster fireplace may be the star of the room, but the furniture surrounding it is equally commanding. An assemblage of curving lines, sculptural shapes and light and dark finishes infuses the quiet setting with depth, while a large white-and-brass lantern, a Morris design for Avrett, presides over the space. Although the room exudes a relaxed attitude reminiscent of Southern California, a Southern sensibility is evident in Morris’ use of antiques, including a pair of walnut chairs and a French 1920s table that add time-honored patina to the otherwise contemporary space. –Jennifer Boles

COLORFUL CUES DEN, ROBERT BROWN, ROBERT BROWN INTERIOR DESIGN Art—specifically a commissioned set of abstract works on paper by artist Brett Smith—was the starting point for Robert Brown’s design of the den. Mindful of both the strong symmetry of the art installation and the relaxed nature of the home’s architecture, Brown kept the room’s furnishings casual and loose, gravitating to solo pieces of furniture and lamps and avoiding symmetrical pairs. White walls and unadorned windows amplify the room’s brightness, while an earthtoned palette bestows warmth, particularly the Tuscan Red rug from Keivan Woven Arts and a Liaigre plum leather wing chair, a piece which the designer especially admires. Calm and collected, this space lends itself to any number of casual, sophisticated settings, Brown believes, including the Hamptons and even coastal Italy. – Jennifer Boles

GRACIOUS MODERNISM FAMILY ROOM AND BREAKFAST ROOM, MELANIE TURNER, MELANIE TURNER INTERIORS This “glass box” addition—a transparent counterpoint to the massing of the stucco exterior, says architect Linda MacArthur—is partially defined by floor-to-ceiling iron windows and a Venetian plaster ceiling. Decorated by Melanie Turner, the family room features generous upholstered seating that feels cool during the day but cozy at night. Sheer drapery and lightweight linen fabrics uphold the room’s inherent lightness, as does a soft color palette of taupe, blush and pale green. One of the room’s most striking pieces is a painting by America Martin; placed against windows, a moss backing gives it an organic feel when viewed from the outside. The open, inviting atmosphere extends to the adjoining breakfast room, which offers a sophisticated spot to dine amid contemporary furniture and art. Well-suited for leisure and hospitality, the two rooms are “easy on the eyes,” says Turner. –Jennifer Boles

CONTEMPORARY ELEGANCE
KITCHEN, NATALIA MAKAROVA, KARPATY CABINETS Designed to accommodate both everyday living and entertaining, the kitchen was conceived by designer Natalia Makarova as two fully functional spaces: a main kitchen intended for daily use and a scullery, which offers auxiliary room for cooking, baking and event catering. Linking the two spaces together is a centrally located floating island with a cooktop, which in turn is flanked by glass doors that, when closed, establish a feeling of intimacy on each side without blocking out any natural light. Arched windows allow sunlight to stream in, while sleek cabinetry and richly veined Calacatta Viola Italian marble employed for the countertops, sinks and island shelves create a clean, minimalist environment that allows the kitchen’s exquisite textures and superb craftsmanship to stand out. Thoroughly modern in both form and function, this space is rooted in the love of food, family and hospitality. –Jennifer Boles

COOL & COLLECTED DINING ROOM, KELLY ANTHONY, WOLF DESIGN GROUP Taking a broad approach to the dining room, designer Kelly Anthony created a versatile space intended for both casual and formal dining or checking emails on one’s laptop. Although minimalist in style, the room is brimming with warmth and coziness thanks to Anthony’s emphasis on texture and tactile materials throughout the space, including boiled wool fabric, plaster and a herringbone-patterned wood floor, which was purposely left bare so as not to hide its beauty. Custom-designed and hand-crafted specifically for this room, the furniture is artistically and even sculpturally conceived, including a plaster console, plaster pedestals and übermodern dining chairs, which Anthony co-created with Bradley USA. Inspired by the home’s “casual Cali vibe,” the designer also credits the master of minimalism, Belgian design legend Axel Vervoordt, as an influence on this room. –Jennifer Boles 87

WORLDS AWAY MASTER BEDROOM, PHOEBE HOWARD, MRS. HOWARD AND MAX & COMPANY Wishing for a permanent vacation? Designer Phoebe Howard, owner of Mrs. Howard and Max & Company, outfitted the master bedroom with light, island-inspired appointments designed to transport the owners to an exotic locale. Starting with the white plaster bed (a new introduction to the Howard’s furniture line, Mr. and Mrs. Howard for Sherrill), Howard layered in soft white linens and breezy draperies along with tropical accents in the form of vintage wicker and bamboo chairs; a teak leaf sculpture above the bed; flat baskets on the wall; and a sisal rug. The sofa’s knotted fringe takes its cue from hammocks. Favoring an old-mixed-with-new tension in her designs, Howard added an antique Biedermeier bedside chest and side table in a honeyed finish along with a French walnut chest for a sun-kissed look. The vaulted ceiling is almost ethereal thanks to its smooth Venetian plaster finish and Akari light fixture, while the David Hillegas photograph of dreamy, windswept Balinese sands is a window to another world. –Cathy McGowin 88

NATURAL WONDER MASTER BATH, CYDNEY MITCHELL AND BRITTANY STAFFORD, SOURCE Aiming to recreate luxurious spa appointments in five-star style, Cydney Mitchell and Brittany Stafford of Source outfitted the master bath with a chic, West Coast-inspired design. “We wanted to create an atmosphere of relaxation,” says Mitchell. “This is a place where someone would feel as if they stepped into a retreat and could escape from the demands of a fast-paced life.” To achieve that laid-back California feel, the designers chose calm colorways and focused their attention on bringing nature into the design. “The hand-crafted and hand-glazed terracotta tile from Morocco proved to be the perfect fit, while the dramatic onyx slabs tied it all together,” Mitchell says. “The natural elements create texture and introduce organic details throughout the space while highlighting

NO BOUNDARIES GUEST ROOM, JARED HUGHES, JARED HUGHES DESIGN Combining English influences with California imagery, designer Jared Hughes worked with the venerable Gracie Studio to design a hand-painted wall mural that depicts landscapes of Big Sur in a pastoral style. “This is a room for someone who is well traveled and appreciates beauty,” says Hughes. “They are fearless when it comes to mixing styles and combining nontraditional designs with classic elements.” Working with the studio’s artists to capture the West Coast’s dramatic cliffs and the Pacific Ocean, Hughes exaggerated scenes and saturated colors for theatrical flair. Upholstery, draperies and linens take a neutral stance to allow the scene to shine. Antiques offer a pleasant tension between clean lines and lavish detailing. Finials on the vintage iron bed reiterate the palms in the mural while wicker lamps and an English bamboo stool impart coastal influences. Grander statements come in the agateware urns on pedestals, gold Louis Philippe mirror and portrait of the English gentleman. –Cathy McGowin

DREAM BIG GIRL’S BEDROOM, BRITTANY CASON JOHNSTON, BRITTANY CASON INTERIOR DESIGN Imagining the whims of an artistic young girl who relocated to Atlanta from California, Brittany Cason Johnston gave in to all the spoils in this tween bedroom. Bold colors, playful patterns and fanciful prompts are designed to stimulate creativity. Mixing edgy accents with feminine touches makes this room decidedly individual. “It’s a never-ending opportunity for inspiration through patterns and art,” says Johnston. The geometric blush pink Schumacher wallpaper harmonizes with the graphic punch of the modern headboard and scalloped canopy on the custom velvet bed. Classic antiques allow glamorous notions such as the Venetian mirror in the bath, vintage gold leaf bedside table lamps and Lucite drapery rods to shine even brighter. A leopard watercolor by Mary Maguire contrasts girly florals and monogrammed linens. With so much stimulation in one room, Johnston thoughtfully carved out studio space in the adjacent closet to capture artistic endeavors when the mood strikes. –Cathy McGowin

FANTASTIC VOYAGE BOY’S BEDROOM, JOSH PICKERING, PICKERING HOUSE INTERIOR DESIGN Created for a young man on the go, this bedroom evokes worldly notions of travel and experience. Design considerations included a gentleman’s hopes and dreams for exploration, academics and inclusion in social clubs such as the Harvard Club and Knickerbocker Club. “This room is imagined for a college-age student full of aspirations,” says designer Josh Pickering. Campaign-style details include the tent-inspired window draperies and canopy on the metal bed. The custom desk and nightstand play into the theme thanks to details such as inset finger pulls, brass trimmings and tooled leather handles reminiscent of those on a vintage suitcase. Global influences include the Georgian column, Egyptian obelisks and the Bolga basket dog bed, handwoven in Africa. The tole agave planter lends a touch of Latin America. The Klismos desk chair recalls travels to Greece, and the hand-painted lampshades have motifs taken from Villa Kerylos. –Cathy McGowin 98

UP AND AWAY LOFT, KATI HARDWICK, B.D. JEFFRIES The upstairs loft seems even cozier thanks to the sloping ceiling, but it also presented a challenge for Kati Hardwick, the in-house designer for B.D. Jeffries. “The space was previously the chef’s apartment, a pied-à-terre, if you will,” says Hardwick. To counteract the room’s low ceiling height, Hardwick focused her attention on centralizing the main functioning areas with two facing sofas. Floating furnishings to the center of the room, says Hardwick, prevents guests from bumping into the angled ceiling. Aiming for an upstairs retreat that would suit all ages, the room offers a game table, reading nooks and the sofas for lounging. Light was also a consideration, so Hardwick opted for neutral fabrics. “Right now I’m crazy for textured fabrics. I used a bouclé for the sofas and a fringed fabric for the drapery. I think when adding texture to something so

neutral, it gives the piece a personality of its own.” –Cathy McGowin

WITH VERVE OFFICE/INFORMAL POWDER ROOM/MUDROOM/LAUNDRY ROOM, TARA DENNIS, ARCHIE BOLDEN AND SOURCE Rather than treating four connected service rooms— which are connected to the garage, the pool terrace and kitchen—in unilateral fashion, designer Tara Dennis instead gave each space its own distinctive personality. Taking its cue from black-and-white street photography, the vestibule office maintains a bold, graphic mood. Next door, the pink-hued powder room assumes a romantic posture, which was inspired by a vintage oil painting and a pair of vintage candlesticks. In the mudroom and laundry room, Dennis added organic materials such as seagrass and earthy colors as a natural complement to the rooms’ terrazzo floor tile, fluted wood cabinetry with quartz countertop and a honed terrazzo dog wash, all specified by Source. Together, the functional but stylish rooms project an

LOUNGE ACT POOL LOUNGE, RANDY KORANDO AND DAN BELMAN, BOXWOODS GARDENS & GIFTS Located adjacent to the home’s indoor lap pool, the pool lounge is a bright, comfortable space to relax in and enjoy a glass of iced tea or, better yet, a mint julep, say the room’s designers Dan Belman and Randy Korando. A round cast stone table anchors the light-filled space, while upholstered seating tempts swimmers to take a break with generous cushions and lightweight fabric in soothing neutral shades. Should a nap be needed, the designers included a sleeper sofa from Gabby, which does double-duty as a bed. The most inspired decoration, however, might be the framed shadow box collection of vintage bathing caps, which are displayed above the room’s French doors. A nod to the room’s poolside location, the assemblage was also inspired by old Hol-

ENDLESS SUMMER INDOOR POOL, MELANIE MILLNER, THE DESIGN ATELIER Winter may not be Atlanta’s favorite season, but thanks to the home’s indoor lap pool and designer Melanie Millner’s idea to turn it into a hidden oasis, the illusion of warm, sunny days can be found year-round. Whether used by a serious swimmer, or just someone looking for a place to relax, this pool room brings to mind swaying palm trees and sandy beaches thanks to the handwoven hammocks suspended over the water. Sourced from weavers in the remote Bolivian Amazon, each hammock represents a month’s work by women in the village. Exquisitely detailed in the weaving, braids and crocheted fringe, the hammocks are not only works of art, but a traditionally lovely way to nap. –Cathy McGowin

LIFE
END NOTE
FALLING FORWARD
I’M KNOWN FOR FALLING FORWARD, but not always in the most graceful and coordinated ways. For example, I once fell into an open sewer in Sun Valley, Idaho, when I couldn’t stop on my cross-country skis and I sailed right off the ski path and onto the street. Another time I fell over a brick wall and into a woodpile when an errant squirrel got trapped in my sunroom and I ran out of the house to escape. I’ve fallen in an array of circumstances, but fortunately, I’ve always fallen forward. With September upon us, I’ve never been happier to greet the change of season. We’ll put suffocating humidity behind us and welcome brisk mornings, colorful leaves and crackling fires. Those sights and smells of shorter days bring back fond memories of gathering with family and friends for football games and festive baking. Although COVID-19 has interrupted most opportunities to convene, I’m holding fast to the memories of previous years and waiting anxiously 112
for news of a vaccine so that we can lean into dinner parties, holiday hugs and shopping sans masks. Our homes have been safe harbors in 2020, even as they bulge to accommodate areas for school, office, dining, entertainment and rest. While they may be a little worn and weary after so much use, may we rejoice in being able to adapt and accommodate, but eager to emerge from them into cooler, crisper air. 2020 has been a grim year. We’ve been depleted emotionally, physically, psychologically and financially, yet we’ve concurrently been inspired to do more and be better. I’m hopeful that as we move closer to 2021, it is with more gratitude and less resentment; more hope and less despair. We’re looking toward a dazzling display of foliage that I hope is a brilliant analogy for all of the possibilities that lay before us in 2021. Here’s wishing you soft landings as you fall into the new season!
